This restaurant was a lot better than I expected. I don't expect much when I am on the road, so maybe it was the fact that I was pleasantly surprised as much as that the food was good. I ordered the thin fried catfish with turnip greens and a side salad. Going worse to better, the salad was the typical sad affair of flavorless iceberg, a few shards of carrots and purple cabbage, and diced tomatoes topped with cheddar that came out of a bag. But the homemade blue cheese dressing was pretty good. The hushpuppies were dry beyond belief as was the corn muffin served with it. (And a little too much corn bread.) The catfish though was very good as were the greens, both much better than expected. All in all, not a bad experience.

I love to stop at Rowdy's when traveling between Dallas and Atlanta. Everything about this place is hit or miss except the catfish and the house sauce. Today the original style catfish was excellent, the country style vegetables were good, and the service was attentive. There were new fish and frogs in the aquarium, which our kids love. The music was 70s standards, and the TVs were tuned to ESPN coverage of the Mud Bowl. Rowdy's would not be a destination for us, but it's a great traveling stop. The first time I ate there, the music was something akin to death metal, and UFC was the television offering. Also, we have had servers pull a vanishing act just as we were ready for our check. And at times the fish tank has been a cloudy, sparsely populated bummer. The atmosphere is kid friendly - roomy, bustling, and well-lit - but not commensurate with the menu prices. Looking around today, I felt that my family's pleasant lunch experience was the result of the restaurant management's responsiveness to feedback in such venues as Yelp; and that is what prompted me to write my very first restaurant review about Rowdy's.

I was a little hesitant because of what I read on here. Don't be!! We came on a Thursday night - early. It was not busy but steady and picked up later. Every single staff person greeted us and was helpful and friendly. The service was great and so was the food. The cornbread was delicious. The black eyes peas were really good - they can be not so good eaten out. The restaurant itself was decorated for Halloween and was just a lot of fun. They have really good looking homemade desserts that we were too full to try. In Vicksburg? Give this place. a try.

Great catfish, great selection of sides and appears spotless. Love the place. Would have given 5 stars but I am a die-hard fiddler fan and they don't offer whole catfish. Too bad.

I found the food just right. Catfish was cooked perfectly , slaw was refreshing tasty. I found no dust or dirty tables. I am from the south and this is good southern cooking. Also kudos for the sweet tea.

delicious fried catfish. i know they serve other stuff but get the catfish. the BEST hush puppies i've ever had..cool stuff to read on the walls, 3rd generation food family. also the most delicious special sauce, kind of like remoulade but different - you can buy it to take home ;)

The chicken fried stake was too dry. The crab cakes were under flavored and underwhelming. The coleslaw was ok. The best part of the meal was the special sauce with the crackers. Waitress was a novice at best.

I am sorry but the ONLY good things were the ladies at the register and the appetizers. The catfish was soggy and OVER PRICED. The chicken fried steak was disgusting no matter how much gravy we drown it in. I am very sad that my check came to $60 and over half the food was disgusting. we will NEVER be returning to this establishment. Not to mention they decided to add my tip for me and it was WELL over what the server deserved!! again my family will NEVER return to this establishment.

We both ordered the signature burger "The Rowdy Burger". The burger itself came out crispy and dry and flavor tasted as though it had been warmed up but the temperature was at room temperature. The lettuce was brown (see picture) and the tomato had a white spot in the middle the size of a quarter. This was our second time here. Both times were because of convenience but that won't happen again.

Every time we visit Vicksburg we eat here. Catfish and shrimp. Relaxing and great service.

It's ok. Catfish was excellent. Slaw and hush puppies were lacking. We came in on a Monday after the lunch rush, so maybe we were getting the end of lunch batches that were prepared. Regardless, not sure if I will return. Again, the catfish was very good but everything else was mediocre.

Was NOT impressed with the food....definitely wasn't worth the $50+ I paid for it. The seafood was salty and tasted fishy, and the sides were bland. Only giving it an extra star because of the battered fries(actually ordered seconds). Will not go back, there's better seafood in the area.

Great catfish! It's one of the only places left in Vicksburg to get good catfish. Service is typically very good.

Food was really mediocre. We had the catfish and shrimp platter, which was big enough for two people (with an app, and we're not big eaters). Prices were kinda high for what it is tho. Sweet tea was weak and didn't taste fresh. Catfish was fine but nothing to write home about. Everything tasted way too fried and had to be doused in various sauces to be interesting. To be fair, this doesn't seem like a town that is going to offer any culinary revelations- but I'd say if you can, try something else!

Not a good place to go to eat at all. Just left the place and our bill was 40 dollars with tip and I could have gotten better food out of a drive-thru window. 2 tiny pieces of whole catfish but should have been called minnows instead, 2 greasy hush-puppies, hard baked potato and canned green beans were 19.99!!! The catfish were undercooked and when it was brought to the servers attention was told that the cook said that was the way catfish looked when they were cooked. No offers for a swap or anything else. Had to get my own to go box off the counter because I lost our server. The fried shrimp were tough and greasy. We were looking forward to catfish our entire drive from Georgian on the way to Texas and were so disappointed. YUCK!!!

Well I am more than happy to call this the best catfish in Vicksburg. In fact, this is one of the best catfish poorboys I ever had. The sides were also excellent including the fries and coleslaw. Had some hushpuppies and loved them, too. They may have tasted special because I do not live in the south now and rarely trust anyone where I currently live to make them decently. The bread in the poorboy was also fresh. The tables, floors and chairs were clean. I didn't ask to be let into the kitchen. The staff was friendly. Service a little slow but no big deal. About average for the south. Just get the food right, that is the important thing! The owner shows off his prize hunting dogs on the wall. Pretty impressive. Another place you must eat if you want to try good southern food while in Vicksburg. Loved it and would go back again if in Vicksburg.

Our experience at Rowdy's was far better than I had expected after reading the existing Yelp review and some from TripAdvisor. In the realm of family-style Southern restaurants, it was quite good. The manager appeared to be one of the original owners (I believe the restaurant must be about 50 years old) and quite a fixture, especially if you enjoy people-watching. Service was prompt, courteous, and very helpful. Now, to the most important part, the food. I am an accomplished cook and can rate it fairly. The catfish was simply superior. The pond-raised fish was sweet, firm and without either muddiness or off chemical tastes. I have not tasted better catfish in any location where it is raised, and only wished that we were there on a day that they were frying whole fish. I imagine that it would be fantastic. I ordered the regular filets. The breading was flavorful and did not retain too much oil. Shrimps were decent, not overcooked as is usually the case, and seasoned decently. Greens were well-prepared in the classic Southern method. The fried okra was a bit overcooked but this is easy to do as mere seconds make a difference. Prices are very reasonable and portions good.

Rowdy's has very good catfish--that's why I eat there. The service is generally slow, frustratingly so at times. Our table was seemingly abandoned by the wait staff on one lunch visit. A call ahead take-out order was late on another occasion. The dining room is pretty grubby. Stained carpet and dusty wall ornaments are standard. You may need to wipe your table off when you are seated. But if you are not pressed for time, chalk all this up to "local charm", order the original catfish fillets, substitute the pasta salad for coleslaw, ask for battered fries and enjoy!

After being recommended by the hotel staff for the "best fried catfish" in Vicksburg, we were disappointed. We, my wife and I, would have to disagree on most of prior report by the experienced cook. It could have just been a bad night for the staff there. The lettuce in the salad was limp. The shrimp tasted terrible and the shrimp batter along with all the other batters other than the catfish had pepper in it, making it spicy. The catfish we had tonight, tasted fishy and muddy just as one other critic said otherwise. The pros were fairly good coleslaw, great baked potato and excellent cornbread and hush puppies. The service was ok but the staff at times was conversing near our table and seem confused as to who covers what section of the dinning room. I don't have any other suggestions for the local area other than avoid this one unless mediocre is ok!
