I've lived in Oxford for 2 1/2 years now, and have always loved Lamar Lounge. Particularly, I have looked forward to the rib special on Saturday. Unfortunately, the ribs have changed from the dry rub that I so looked forward to, to a finish with a sweet, Kansas City type barbecue sauce. I will not be going back for the ribs until they go back to the dry rub. The waitress noted that there was a new chef, and I hope that the chef realizes that this change was short-sighted. I have always felt that Lamar had one of the best dry rub ribs that I've ever had. Having said that, this is still one of my favorite places in town. The pork shoulder is great, and I think that the burger might be the best in town.

I think this is one of John Currence's better places. Not as contrived as the others. Very comfortable with a mixed crowd. Great BBQ!

I came here as a tourist that was influenced to come here after watching the Anthony Bourdain special. I came here on an average Wednesday night and they had a band playing during happy hour. I had the roast beef po boy and it was delicious. Even more impressive was the hand cut fries that were seasoned perfectly. The inside was a little dark, but neat. I'd give this place 5 stars, but the staff could have been a little more friendly. There was also only one beer on tap that night. I would visit this place again because of the food and ambiance. And I don't mind it's a mile north of "The Square."

I went for dessert. Don't go for dessert. I was looking for Dwayne Ingraham and guess what. Got em! After watching Dwayne on the Food Network, I set out for Mississippi determined to eat his cookies and things. This was the third place I searched. I ordered something like an apple turnover with a scoop of ice cream. It was okay. Alright, it was tasty but nothing like the dessert I had at City Grocery. Same chef, different results. I can't say I was disappointed though because again, I finally spotted Dwayne hanging out and I took pictures, too! The atmosphere was dark and very casual.

Tonight I got the pulled pork plate with coleslaw, baked beans and a biscuit. The pulled pork was dry and tasted a little old so I had to send it back, and ordered brisket instead. The brisket was moist and tender and very flavorful. The coleslaw got an A plus. It was crisp, a little sweet, and they diced up the vegetables which I like. Biscuit was okay but not exciting. City grocery and Honey Bee's has the best biscuits in town!!! I wanted to order the barbecue ribs but Lamar Lounge only offers those on Saturday nights. So if you're hankering for barbecue ribs then make sure you plan to go on a Saturday!! Best drink! Is a margarita muddled with jalapeños!! That was my brothers idea, so the bartender does not get credit for that wonderful inspiration.

Had the brisket on the fattier side and tried the catfish sandwhich- both delicious but will try the brisket's leaner option next time. Hush puppies and biscuits are perfect.

I'm nearly certain that the Lamar Burger that I had heard so much about was a frozen patty. It was not good, white on the inside. The waitress allowed me to send it back. I don't like to do this but she offered quickly to take it away. She let me replace it with pulled pork. It was a very small serving but wasn't that great either. I wanted to like this place because I liked the atmosphere and the service was good.

I saw this place on the Anthony Bourdain show and made a note to go there.. They had some good beers on tap, one of em was a local (Hattiesburg) IPA which was delicious. So good I had to go back there and have 3-more... The place has a nice atmosphere and a really cool bar. We just wanted to take it easy one night so we decided to eat dinner there... I had the brisket which was delicious. Some of the other items on the menu looked quite tasty also. Would have been 5-stars but one of the bartenders sneezed and used his bar-towel to cover / wipe his nose, mouth... Then used that same towel to dry off some wine glasses and put them back on the shelf. Needless to say, I didn't order any wine.

They serve the best burger I have ever had. I absolutely love the atmosphere, and the bar is very cool.

This place was just Ok. Perhaps I didn't order the best thing off the menu. I got a half chicken (jamaican jerk) with collards and fries as sides. The chicken itself was smoked/cooked very well. Didn't taste much of the jerk flavor/seasoning tho. But c'mon, it's chicken... it was good. Adding some of the house made, vinegar based bbq sauce really kicked the flavor and spice up a notch or two as well. So that was a plus! Ordered some local MS brew that was very sub-par but that's not the bar/restaurant's fault. The atmosphere was somewhat divey, somewhat just awkward and confused. The layout isn't great and it was very very crowded in the limited space. Our server wasn't the greatest but she did her best. I ordered a biscuit as a side and it was literally hard enough to use as an instrument against the tin/aluminum plate that the food is served on. I asked for another biscuit and was told it was the last one... as if before bringing it out to me, they knew it wasn't satisfactory at all. The server did come back with something way softer and larger that was more of a roll than a biscuit but I ate it and it was delicious. Wouldn't be somewhere I'd have to return, but it was fair.

One word - "Tot-chos"! So this was our last stop on our John Currence tour of Oxford. We had lunch on Sunday at Lamar Lounge. We loved that his restaurants carried local beers and we were back to drinking Southern Prohibition's Mississippi Fireant. We started with the Tot-chos. You have to get them. You have to. Go! Do it now! We had a great lunch. Our waitress was awesome. We got there when they opened at noon and by 12:15 all the seating was gone. So the place is no secret. I had the whole hog BBQ and Brian had the brisket. Delicious. I loved the baked beans and the coleslaw - we liked all the sides really - we just got stuffed so we couldn't finish everything - curses! We really loved our Oxford tour of Currence's restaurants and we hope to be back soon!

Ok not only do they serve one of the best burgers in town but the rustic ambience just gives this place a old country speak easy feel. With a wide array of burgers and beers to choose from, I usually go with the original Lamar burger. Now to add insult to injury this burger also comes with the best seasoned home fries I have ever had. Although these things are what many come for the sausage cheese app is still a good place to start. So if you want good rustic food with a laid back atmosphere with a cold beer, this is your place. Plus from what I heard it is for a good cause due to all profit going towards charity. ORDER UP!!! PS: In winter they usually have a pretty killer fire roaring in the fire pit to add to the rustic appeal.

BBQ tot-chos were a great way to start the meal. We went with the whole hog BBQ plate, which was good. I'm from KS and use to a wet bbq, which is different, but the pulled pork was nice and tender. My fiancé ordered the hush puppy side and was disappointed. I got the coleslaw which was more on the vinegar-y side, although I prefer creamy slaw myself. Great service! Will go back again to try other dishes. Oh, the pecan pie was delicious!

The food is very good. Brisket is great and most of the sides I have had were worth the trip. The BBQ Tatchos are special! HOWEVER- One MAJOR complaint that has caused me to leave on multiple occasions without eating... The music is OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD when they have live musicians. You go in after work for dinner and a drink at 7 pm and there is a piano or guitar set going on that kills any chance of having an enjoyable meal. We have asked several times for them to turn it down so we could have a conversation. The decor is set up for a low key type atmosphere but then you get dance club decibel level music blaring 3 feet away. Now, if we walk in and there is music during dinner hours, we leave. I am all for music but it should either start later if it is going to be loud or better yet, turn it down while people are sitting around eating dinner.

My party had the brisket plate and chicken breast plate. Perfection! Moist and perfectly cooked. Sides were hush puppies, cucumber onion salad and coleslaw. I had the square of cornbread, was not a fan. Had no salt or sugar, middle of the road. Bring me more brisket! Yummmm!

My review is based solely on the food selection as I do not drink beer. So my opinion on the matter is moot. I'm currently in oxford for work and this was the first place me and a few coworkers tried for lunch. I didn't get the famed Original burger. I instead went with the Hickory and Onion burger. It was hands down one of the best burgers I've ever had. It's been 2 days now and I'm still thinking about it. I plan to visit again as soon as possible. The handcut fries were great as well. I was not a fan of the molasses pecan pie however. Oh and the service was pretty good too. The waitress was sweet in that southern way I only thought you saw on TV. While I'm here in oxford I plan to make this a regular stop.

This establishment has the best burger in Oxford hands down. It's also the only thing I've eaten here. I've heard the BBQ was really good too but haven't tried it. Lamar Lounge was recently showcased on a episode of CNN's Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown: Mississippi Delta.

This establishment has a nice interior and nice patio. The menu is rather small and the burger is decent but not anything special. The french fries here are probably one of the better things as they are cooked and seasoned to perfection and I've been spoiled in New Orleans with duck fat and goose fat fries for awhile and still found these quite desirable. They only have whole hog BBQ here and no beef and that makes me grumpy as I want my beef! The service was friendly and efficient but I would really like to see more on the menu.

Somehow this place was selected for a Food Network special, which is completely ridiculous once you've had a chance to visit it. Since I've been to many other restaurants featured on Food Network and since this "Lounge" pales in comparison, I have to admit that this establishment doesn't stack up. The featured item was its "famed" burger. I ordered it recently and much to my dismay the bun was a bit soggy, the burger was overcooked (asked for medium-rare and received medium to medium-well), and the toppings didn't seem fresh. Let's move on to what might be the specialty of this Food Network worthy "Lounge"; it's beer and alcohol selection. Let's not worry about the former and move to the latter. The beer selection leaves much to be desired. There are no beers on draught. All of the beers are only available in the bottle. Really? What is this, Prohibition? The only reason I'm giving (in every sense of the word) this two stars is the service we received. The wait-staff and bartenders are very attentive to customers. I really appreciate that, so that's at least one redeeming quality of this thoroughly disappointing "Lounge" experience. Whoever recommended that the Food Network check out this place really needs to get a clue. The recommender clearly hasn't traveled widely enough to understand what it takes to be a great food establishment or offer great food.

Tonight was my second time to get the infamous/famous burger, but the first time to actually eat in the restaurant. I was glad to see that the service was excellent, attentive and very quick on a busy Friday night. The burger is great.....cooked perfectly to temperature, seasoned well, and not fussed over too much. Sturdy bun to hold it all together. Top notch in every way and maybe the best I've had in MS. Hand cut fries were good, although I'm not a big fry fan in general. My only complaint food wise this time was I paid the extra for the bacon, thinking bacon and cheddar sounded good. I literally laughed out loud when it came out. The "bacon" was a single very thin pathetic strip ripped in half put in a cross on top. The problem was it covered so little real estate on the burger I guarantee if the bun was on and I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have known it was there. Sure, I don't want a ton to detract from the actual burger, but that looked exactly like those sad strips you would get on a golden corral buffet or something. Seemed a shame to top a great burger with that instead of something good. Next time I'll skip it and won't miss a thing. Last is a problem I run into all over in Mississippi's newly emerging craft beer scene. If you are going to serve craft beer in your bar, learn something about it. I was thrilled that the waitress didn't give me crap about not wanting my IPA in a frozen glass, but I was less than thrilled to get an IPA WAY past its prime. Torpedo hasn't come bottled in these parts (all cans now AFAIK for at least 6 months) and it had very little hop flavor. That being said, I'll be back for the burger!

Great food and service. But the size of the drinks were changed since the original opening and are now basically the size of a double shot for a ridiculously high price. John Currence should know better than that....

Pulled pork was dry and flavorless. Not worth $13. Lighting and ambiance were lacking. There are better places to hang in Oxford.

Heard the veggie burger here is good, so we headed over to check it out. Location is a bit out of the way, up on north Lamar, north of Beacon, south of Molly Barr. Casual spot with trophy animals on the walls and a CD jukebox. Small stage at one end of restaurant seems to be used for live concerts. I tried the sweet potato veggie burger with hushpuppies. Pretty good, although I think maybe a sweet potato burger might be a tad too sweet for my taste. The hushpuppies were pretty good. Also tried their fries, which were ok. Pecan pie was ok too but gave me a bit too much of a sweet/burnt/oily impression. Overall an ok experience.

I have no idea why anyone would review this as anything other than 5 stars. Service was beyond great, could not have been better. The only thing that eclipsed the service was the burger. One of the best I've had in my life, and I've had tons over the years ( too many if I'm being honest). A MUST if you happen to be in oxford. Great atmosphere to boot. Don't miss this gem.

Good beer list, short menu. Very friendly and attentive waitstaff. Strange that a bar doesn't sell appetizers. All in all, not a bad stop if you don't mind driving a mile from downtown Oxford.

Ok - I know you have seen the "BAR" sign when driving down Lamar and have never had the time to stop. But I recommend that you do visit Lamar Lounge. Silly me, but I always thought that the name of this place was called "The Bar". My first impression was the place was a little smaller on the inside than what it appears. From the outside of the building there appears to be an upstairs deck and outside patio. There is a patio out back but no public space upstairs. On the inside it is small but cozy. They have a great Bar Back that was once owned by Eddie Fisher. As for the food, my first impression of a Burgers at $9.95 was a little high for Oxford, but it was well prepared and the fries were great. I was complete blown away by the Shrimp etouffee $14.95, unbelievable rich dark color on the rue and great combination of flavor structure compiled in a very similar manner of preparation as to the way City Grocery does theirs. IMO I preferred this one. Overall, 5 stars for AKA "The Bar"

Just ate there last night. Good food, interesting drink menu. Reasonably priced. Nice patio area, too.

The atmosphere is fairly decent. It has a decor and a feel that is different than everywhere else in Oxford. The food is fantastic. My fiance and I had the gumbo, BBQ nachos, and burgers. Everything we tried was amazing. The burgers were perfectly cooked. The fries were well seasoned. They have great beer selection and prices as well. Here's the problem; the service is HORRIBLE. It took 10 minutes to get our check, and the only reason we got it was because we flagged down the bus boy. Our waitress walked past our table 3-4 times and never said a word. Even after we gave her the "excuse me," she kept walking away. After we got our check from the bus boy, we waited another 10 minutes to get it picked up - they never did. We had to go up to the bar to get someone to run our check. The waitress up at the bar said she wouldn't run it because we weren't in her section. She tracked down our waitress and they kept glaring back at us and whispering back and forth. Eventually, 25 minutes after we finished eating, we were able to pay. Apparently the Lamar Lounge doesn't like money because I've never had to work so hard to give my money away. It would have been one thing had they been slammed, but there was about 5 tables other than ours. The service was SO horrible that it overcomes the food. We will never return to the Lamar Lounge because of our experience.
