1 STAR - only b/c I was starving! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, Mac & cheese & coleslaw. Mac & cheese AND the pulled pork were cold. Now, let's talk about the man that took my order.... Ummm he won't be awarded the "Mr. Congeniality" title. I have never been here before - so no idea how this place operated OR what I wanted to eat. He made me feel rushed. So much so - I forgot to order a drink & didn't notice until my meal arrived. Not ONCE did he say... "Ma'am, would you like a drink?" I won't be a return customer. They better be glad the locals keep them up & running- I can tell them that!

"You don't need no teeth to eat Shack's meat" I must say that being in the heart of the south, I had very high hopes for this barbeque. I wanted either barbeque or Mexican food for lunch and today The Rib Shack won the dining vote. Upon walking in, my expectation rose. This place is nothing fancy. Very down home, vinyl table cloths on the tables, banquet chairs, fake ficus trees in the corner and an unpaved parking lot. I was prepared for some knock your socks off barbeque and down home cooking. There is a smokehouse in the back of the restaurant which reinforced my belief that I was about to do some real good grubbin'. Upon walking in, I announced that this was our first time visiting the business. The gentleman behind the counter was quick to reply that it wouldn't be our last. The menu selection was very good. All kinds of smoked meats and a great variety of down home southern side choices. I am a brisket, potato salad and beans guy when it comes to barbeque. MWH (dining companion) had the smoked chicken plate with macaroni and cheese (appeared and tasted homemade) with the potato salad as well. Beverages are served in 20 oz. bottles (Coke products) or unlimited sweetened iced tea. I am an avid sweet tea drinker, I make and consume quite a bit of it. When a tea container is covered while the tea is still warm or hot, the tea sours. This tea was quite soured. Granted, this assured me that it was brewed in house, but the fact that it was soured kept me from enjoying it or getting a refill. Neither of us had dessert but the menu led one to believe that they are made in house as well. Ordering is done a the counter and the food is brought to your table. It seemed as though there is a lot of "to go" business as we were the only table eating at that time. All menu items are available in bulk and from what I could tell, they may do catering as well. Our meals were delivered to us in a 3 compartment to go box. I was so excited as this seemed to be getting more and more down home. I was incredibly disappointed when I opened my box and and when MWH opened his box; especially seeing as I paid $25 for this complete meal...lunch at that. For almost $9 MWH got a very small (white meat) chicken quarter. I received 4 thin slices of brisket that was incredibly fatty. The sauce was good but nothing outstanding. The beans were fresh out of the can, and I've had my fair share of it, St. Claire potato salad from Sam's. I was completely deflated. Meat has a certain, almost metallic taste to it when it's been reheated. This brisket was clearly reheated as it had "the taste" and it was a little tough. If you didn't have "no teeth" to eat here, you would have choked or spent a lot of time gumming it. For $11, I considered this a charitable donation to the family. On the way out, I tried to keep in mind that other menu items may be good. Unfortunately, this was my first and last visit, I don't intend to return and do hope for the sake of the family and their business that other menu items are good and desirable. There are other barbeque restaurants in town that I will try; I will be certain to report my findings. We were asked by an older gentleman on the way out how things were. I was going to reply that I would have to try another menu item, MWH told him things were fine.

Another fun random BBQ stop on the highway between Nashville and New Orleans. (We asked the lady at the gas station and she said this was the closest BBQ joint, not the best though. Thanks Gas Station Lady!! She was right ON!) We had a rib plate with crowder peas and some greens. Both of our sides were delicious, the sort of thing that I hope to find while hunting out home-style BBQ on the side of the highway. The ribs were just O.K., sort of tough (I like my ribs falling off the bone.) The flavor was great, maybe a little salty, nice mellow smoky flavor, but just tougher than I like. (AND, if your gonna paint the slogan on the side of your building...I needed my teeth, just sayin') The guys behind the counter could have been a little friendlier, but we were clearly out-of-towners, and, if your are gonna have counter ordering you should have a sign readily available to let your guest know what your selling....just a suggestion. I would totally go back to try other things on the menu, and get some more of those green and crowder peas...YUM!!

I had the BBQ rib plate with two sides; yams and collard greens. BBQ sauce was a cross between the sweeter Kansas City BBQ sauce and the more "vinegary" Carolina BBQ sauce. Excellent food, but service was a bit unwelcoming. I did not realize how close it was to closing time when we got there, but noticed they locked the front door while we were still eating. They close pretty early (I think it's 7:00pm), so make sure you get there early in the evening.

Stop in after being told that this was the best BBQ in town. The first thing I noticed was that there was NO cars in the parking lot (I arrived around 6:30PM). I had the brisket.. tender, but the taste was ok. I've had better. I hope this wasn't the best BBQ in Meridian.
