The pulled pork was dry. The steak fries appear to be bought frozen and not homemade, the potato salad was VERY yellow and tasted like pure mustard and onion and the baked beans had no standout flavor. Nothing was my cup of tea and I expected a lot better from a supposed landmark. The Hershey pie is very good, but at all of their cakes and pies are $5.00 for a small slice. I would not come back.

I got a pulled pork sandwich on my visit. It was dry. I've had much better pulled pork. Maybe I missed something here, and should have ordered something else, but the pulled pork doesn't have me screaming to get back there.

The ribs were lukewarm and didn't taste flavorful. Potato salad wasn't good either. :(

The BBQ pulled pork plate was delicious. The cashier was very friendly and was pleased to tell me about the menu. I went here with my girlfriend because of yelp reviews and were not disappointed. In a nice section of town. A guest eating started chatting with me and said the Hershey pie is the best thing he has ever had. He said he had been eating there for 25 years and it's the best BBQ in Jackson. The hot BBQ sauce was different and my favorite of the three options. If I'm ever in Jackson again, I will get the BBQ nachos.

I am not a picky eater whatsoever, but this place should just be called 'The Pits'. The food had no smoke flavor to it whatsoever, much less a 'Hickory" flavor. Maybe Andrew 'Old Hickory" Jackson had a farm nearby. This is not only bad tasting BBQ, but the portions are small as well. Good iced tea, but that's about it. Next time I will not just look at the overall rating because there are a lot of 5 and 1 stars and not much inbetween...I suspect the 5 star ratings are family, friends, or employees.

I was sent to Hickory Pit for the Ham and Cheese sammich while I was looking for the best non-burger sammiches in Jackson. This is not anything I would normally order at a BBQ place. I like the pulled pork, but my lead came from a good friend so I bit the bullet and grabbed the Ham and Cheese...described as the "Hickory Pit's Signature Sandwich" The bread is HP's awesome buttered thick white bread that comes with BBQ plates and a monster flat-top grilled piece of ham and with American cheese dripping out. Yep. It's good. Damn good. Makes me look at Hickory Pit in a different light. I am not a huge fan of MS BBQ so this gives me a reason to go in there again. I recommend it. Highly.

Ok people when I say good eats, you say "Hickory Pit". "GOOD EATS"!!! Now if you are driving, which you will be if you come here, and don't drive too fast because you will roll right past the place, go slow, but not too slow. When entering the place I noticed that the table settings were that red-and-white checker, picnic color, which seems to be the norm in the South where there is good BBQ. I ordered a slab (Dry) because I wanted to really experience the taste of the meat. My sides were cold slaw and potato salad; they threw in this large piece of Texas toast. Now they have sauces, three different sauces, based on how you eat your ribs, again I wanted mine dry. OK...the ribs were just a little, and I do mean a little salty, but had a really good hickory finish which offset the saltiness. When you add one of the sweet sauces to the mix, you have a perfect blend of taste that truly satisfies the palate. I recommend you stopping if you are traveling through Jackson MS, and pay the "Hickory Pit" a visit, you will not be disappointed with the food or friendly service.

Very disappointed in last night's to go order. If we had been dining in I would have had to ask for money back. As it was, it was pitched into garbage. Ribs were nothing but fat and tasted as if they had been boiled. Love their pulled pork but they need to work on those ribs. $23 tossed into garbage can!

  • Dreka G.

It's alright. The ribs were very tender, but it's the sauces that killed it for me. The baked beans were not a pretty sight, but they tasted pretty good.

I convinced my coworkers to try this place based on the reviews on here. I was very excited to have some good southern BBQ! I was not super hungry so I got a pulled chicken sandwich and a slice of the Hershey's Pie. With a name like Hickory Pit, I was expecting a lot of smoked hickory flavor. My chicken had no smoked flavor what so ever. It tasted just like cooked chicken. The slaw was good on the sandwich and I mixed the hot and normal sauce to get something I liked. The Texas Toast was nicely done. My coworkers said the baked beans and slaw were good. I really enjoyed the Hershey's Pie. It was delicious! One of my coworkers got the Pecan Pie and let me try a bite. It was underwhelming. Way too many pecans and hardly any sauce. If this is the best BBQ in Mississippi as the sign inside the door states, then I am very disappointed in Mississippi BBQ.

This spot is just okay, nothing spectacular in terms of southern bbq. I've had better and it's located near strip mall heaven. The pork and chicken bbq were far better than the beef.

Visited from CA. Showed up 5 min before closing and they were nice enough to let me eat there. Amazing pulled pork! Thanks for making my visit worth the trip!!

I have to give Hickory Pit the Best BBQ in Jackson as well. Been in business forever, always have had good bbq. Locally owned/operated family style place. Relatively easy to access off I-55, and several small unique shops to visit after lunch right behind them. Voted Best BBQ several times in Jackson Free Press. I like my ribs falling off the bone in big meaty chunks, and theirs requires a bit more effort to get off bone, but they aren't bad. I much prefer the pulled pork and chicken plates and sandwiches. I get the pulled pork plate most of the time. I love the baked beans! Oh and noone has mentioned the Hershey Bar pie, which has always been their "trademark" dessert. As long as you are ok with nuts, you simply have to get a piece of the pie. regulars tip--mix the bbq sauces

Truly outstanding bbq, sauce, friendly staff and homey atmosphere. food came quickly and was reasonably priced. get desert they have some good ones (I had carrot cake). yum! pork sandwich with fries was plenty, you don't need to get the plate.

i actually worked here when i was a young fellow. And i must say, a lot of hard work and love goes into the cue' here . i do not know if ginger still owns the place but she fired me for no reason and i still miss the food. i always stop by when i am in town.

Great Ribs! Meaty and fresh. The smoked chicken was good too but the ribs were better. The sides were fine but not unique or special. Limited beer choices. The pies looked yummy but couldn't eat another bite. Will have to come back next time in town.

I have ate a lot of BBQ and I will say I won't be going back to Hickory Pit, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good. I got the pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, and baked beans. The beans were really good, and that's about it. The potato salad was the worst I have ever had and tasted like it was out of a container at Walmart. The pulled pork was dry, so I loaded it up with sauce. The sauce was alright. The bun however was a cheap, generic, nothing great bun. My husband had the same feeling as I did. I'd rather go to Sonny's or make my own BBQ in the crockpot then spend $25 for two meals and sweet tea. The sweet tea was terrible too, it's definitely not "southern fresh brewed sweet tea."

After skimming through the reviews here, Hickory Pit was a bit of a letdown. I went with the pulled pork sandwich platter with slaw and potato salad (a bit under $8). It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. Everything was a bit unremarkable: Generic, pillowy bun. Unremarkable sides. Sauce that was overly tangy and sweet. Hot sauce that wasn't hot at all. The saving grace was the pork, juicy and succulent. Since barbecue is all about the meat, I'll be willing to give this place another shot. But next time, I'm going straight for the meat. The buns, sauces, and sides just aren't worth your time here. (Oh, and another reviewer described Texas barbecue as "mainly consist[ing] of dry brisket on cottony rolls covered in sauce." What. Cottony rolls? Sauce? What were you eating as a kid?)

The food is exactly what you would expect, southern bbq. I had the half cluck and fries. I could tell that the chicken was smoked, and overall it had a great flavor. I'd order it again. The place has various homeade pies as well, each of these looked better than the next. But honestly, the reason for the 3 stars? The atmosphere of the place is just bad. It's really small, almost uncomfortable. Good food, bad atmosphere. 3 stars.

Take this review with a grain of salt, since I'm an out-of-towner here for a month. As for my barbeque memories, there is The Rib Shack from my hometown in Illinois, and Lil' Porgy's where I went to medical school, and really nothing else in my gastronomic history worth mentioning. I happened to find Hickory Pit randomly looking for dinner on a rainy Monday night. The decor is rustic, with antique soda ads, and wooden knick-knacks. A small TV with FOX News playing softly in the background adds authenticity to me. There is only one table occupied Service is excellent and friendly, but I only had takeout, so can't comment in detail. I had the full slab of ribs, with cole slaw, fries, potato salad, baked beans. The meat was flavorful, but not quite tender enough, and the sauce was sugary smooth but lacked heat. I prefer thicker, saltier fries, but I liked the bits of pork and pepper in the baked beans. The other reviews talked about the sandwiches, and not the ribs, so I'll definitely be back. Also, I didn't see sweet potato fries on the menu...

The Hershey Bar pie is worth the visit by itself. Raoul, the owner is as friendly and helpful as they come. We loved the pork sandwich and the stew. Cornbread also was very good. We were in for the Mississippi Blues Marathon on January 8, 2011. I would definitely visit here again when I am in Jackson.

Delicious barbecue!!! Fast, friendly, folksy service; they ask you how it was and really *care* about the answer. The pulled pork is my favorite, and I can vouch for both the sandwich and the platter. I like their beans, and they also have excellent sweet potato fries and big, fat beer battered onion rings. They have three sauce choices on every table: Hot (my fave: bright red with pepper flakes and cumin), Mild (very smoky and good), and the Sweet (very thin, almost maple-y tasting); all are good, but my fiance' actually said today, "This meat is so good that you don't even *need* sauce." Also try the Hot on the onion rings; it's delectable. They also have great ice. I know it's weird to cite this as a "pro"; but I'm an ice fiend, and these are the great crumbly pellets of ice. It's not fancy (paper plates, paper napkins, bus-your-own-table), but I like it that way. It is really, really good barbecue.

Fantastic BBQ!! The ribs are truly amazing, and the beans are a must. Highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to know what ribs are meant to taste like! The staff is also very friendly and they make a mean pie. Enjoy!

the hickory pit was the last stop on what turned to be an eating trip from new york to texas. i was moving from brooklyn to dallas and my brother flew up to drive down with me, and on the way we discovered that one of the many things we have in common is a love of pork barbecue. We are from texas and grew up with texas barbecue, which mainly consists of dry brisket on cottony rolls covered in sauce. so not big fans. but then somewhere along the way we each discovered that in other places barbecue =pork. and that is a philosophy i ccan get behind. anyhoo. we are driving through jackson about lunchtime and i checked yelp to see if there was a good local place (not a chain) from which we could procure some bbq lunch. found the hickory pit on this very site! now i would like to go back to jackson. we asked the 16-year-old girls behind the counter what they get and they both said chicken, but that the pork was good too. And that we needed to get it on toast instead of a bun. We took them at their word and ordered our pulled pork sammiches on toast. Good lord. Tender, succulent pork, crunchy slaw, three sauces, and perfectly golden Texas toast. Potato salad was standard and the salad dressing (aka "comeback sauce") on the green salad was peppery and good. My brother and I didn't speak for about 10 minutes as we inhaled our food. He got a full rack of ribs to go also, which I did not get to sample. But there's always next time...

Found this little gem on Yelp. Thanks to everyone for the good reviews. We ate pulled pork sandwiches--meat was fresh and smokey. Sauce was a good tomato-based sauce. I prefer more of a kick. Not crazy about the potato salad. It was the florescent-yellow kind, too much mustard and pickles.

Stopped in here for dinner on my way to Oxford with some friends looking for some good BBQ. Have to say, this place did not disappoint. The wet pork ribs are the way to go along with some tater logs! And if you're craving something sweet you gotta do a piece of their homemade carrot cake!! Soooo gooood! Lastly, the women running this joint were the best, sweetest ladies to deal with. We talked football for about an hour and then hit the road. If you want some authentic backyard BBQ with a friendly atmosphere this is your place!

I've had Hickory Pit cater to a couple of my companies/agencies before and I've tried them on more than one ocassion on my own free will and accord. With saying all that, they just do not hit me in the wow category. I feel BBQ should be comforting, down home type cuisine and not commercial and Hickory Pit just has this commercial flavor to it. Their portions speak to that commercial, bottom line - one scoop here, a few slices on the scale there. The Hickory Pit is in a nice neighborhood and they have Fox news playing for the southern conservative and it just doesn't speak to me. If you want commercial BBQ - then the Hickory Pit is just for you!

Stopped here on my way to New Orleans as it was conveniently located right off 55. Based on reviews I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich platter with a side salad with comeback sauce and tater salad. The ham was moist and flavorful and properly messy as the sandwich fell apart while I was eating it. I love comeback sauce so that was great for a Midwesterner like myself. The tater salad was more like mashed potatoes but tasted like potato salad, I thought the flavor was a little off. My bf got the pulled pork sandwich platter with baked beans and home fries. The beans were delicious, they had big chunks of ham and a zing to them. The home fries were boring, but the reason for the lower rating was that the pulled pork was extremely underwhelming, which was disappointing for a place claiming to be "voted the best BBQ in ms." It was dry and lacked flavor. The available sauces (mild, spicy & sweet) were lackluster, but sweet was the best to add some moisture to the pork. The other people who came in and out (and through the drive thru) all seemed to be regulars though so maybe I missed the secret menu. All in all ok, convenient for a traveller, but may not be the best option around.

If you've eaten bar b que outside of Mississippi...say like Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas....you probably won't like this spot at all. literally no smoke or charcoal flavor, rather dry, and requires a ton of sauce to feel palatable. The fries were huge....I was ready to throw down, took one bite and felt like I ate a sample of everything else they may have fried in the grease the day before. I can only assume that the positive reviews I read about this place was from people that wouldn't leave Jackson to save their lives. This is survival food at best.

For me BBQ is in a food group all its own.... you know, like ice cream is also its own food group. That being said, "the Pit" is the mother's milk of BBQ, the standard to which others must compare. Maybe I am biased..... it is the BBQ joint I grew up with, but for great Q, terrific service (Ginger and Raul are one of a kind) and DELICIOUS desserts, Hickory Pit is the spot! It is worth a try..... and the Brunswick stew, BBQ nachos and Ham andCheese sandwich also rock!

This is the best BBQ I have had in the Jackson, MS area. Try any one of their homemade pies for dessert. The folks are friendly, it's family owned, and the AC is cold. I haven't had anything there yet that wasn't good. The pulled chicken sandwich is wonderful with their sauce. As a Texas native, I know good BBQ. This is it for me when I am in town. Give a smile to the cuties behind the counter and get you some of that wonderful BBQ and southern hospitality. They have a drive through also and are open pretty late!

This bbq joint was listed on dixiedining.com . Dixiedining.com has never let me down. The relatively small restaurant is easy to find, right off I-55. The folks behind the counter are nice. You order and pick up your food and take it to one of the tables. Drinks are self serve. The iced tea was authentic southern. Just the right amount of being too sweet. I had a pork sandwich and the smoky flavor was evident and enhanced by the sauces on the table. I like sweet sauce and this took it over the top. They have hot sauce for the more adventuresome. I also had a bowl of brunswick stew. It had a real tomato taste to it, which I liked. It had nice chunks of meat and just the right amount of corn. I was too full to try one of the pie slices for dessert. Next time I find myself there, I will not have the stew and save room for the pie that caught my eye, oreo cream. I highly recommend this joint for true bbq lovers.
