This place was a split between three stars and foursies. The rolls are fantastic. It must have taken some sorcery and witchcraft to make these - they are amazingly good. I have never had a roll like this and I never will again. I don't know how they do it - but if I lived in Jackson I would eat here at least once a day. It is so soft, fluffy, and overwhelmingly delicious you can't eat just one. They fall apart perfectly and all look just as perfect as the one that came before it - not a single scorched one or anything. The place is very old fashioned. Nothing wrong with that, but I felt a bit uncomfortable being a Yankee outsider. The locals all said that the famous dishes were the veal cutlet and the enchiladas. Since the rest of the table went with the enchiladas I followed suit. And I got mine with onions because onions are boss. Regional differences always lead you to never know exactly what you are going to get with a plate of enchiladas until you actually get it dropped in front of you. These enchiladas look a lot different than the kind of enchiladas I am accustomed to. It was basically a big Sloppy Joe pile of meat, beans, sauce, and cheese. I think the tortilla may have been somewhere under there that forms the protective shell part of the enchilada, but I am not entirely sure I found it. The food was incredibly good even though at first glance, it looks like a Sloppy Joe was in flagrante delicto with a pile of cheese. But still - very good, very filling, and a huge portion. I could not finish everything. Decent lunch spot.

If you want to experience Jackson's finest go to the Elite. The rainbow trout is unbelievable. The enchiladas are amazing. You have to have the rolls. Their service is fast and very friendly. My favorite place to eat in Jackson!

I tried to stir five of us away from this jaun. it got eh reviews. smelled funky coming in. diner seating. wilted iceberg lettuce salad like a bagged salad from grocery. 'comeback' dressing like special sauce of big mac broiled catfish buttry. green beans buttery and canned. turquoise seating with blue duct tape holding them together. broiled still tastes fried. small portions ^thats what i wrote that night - im sticking with it^

I travel to Jackson on business periodically. It is not my favorite city, but a few restaurants help make up for it. Elite is one of them. The ambiance is how I imagine 1960s Mississipi would have been. The staff is polite, friendly, and courteous. The food is your standard southern "meat and veg" fare. It's not the best restaurant I've been to, but it's consistent. It's worth a try if you happen to be in Jackson.

The Elite is a Jackson landmark. When I worked downtown it was my breakfast spot. I still reccomend them for breakfast but if you are looking for a place to do lunch or dinner you need to check them out. If you are very hungery, I would reccomend having the Elite Dinner. They can turn any entree into an Elite Dinner. You will be served in courses and there are many so plan on a leisurely meal. If you are looking for a place to go with friends this is a great place. Bon Appetit.

You probably wouldn't believe me if I did not provide evidence, so I attached a photo showing that four pieces of greasy fatty bacon are six dollars... Yes, by themselves. This place is a standard greasy spoon, and we had no preconceptions about that. We were completely astounded by the prices on the breakfast menu, however. Two scrambled/powdered eggs, two pieces of crummy toast, a slop of grits, three pieces of bacon ($4.50 worth), and a cup of coffee Total: $8.25 There were only about six or seven people when we walked in on a Thursday morning at 9:30, but that did not keep us from noticing the giant tub full of dirty dishes sitting in the middle of the dining area, that evidently no one had time to get to... Not sure what else they were doing. And, we were not offered a refresh of our drinks, and were privy to the "Flo, from Mel's diner" banter going on between our server and the cook... Not sure if we missed the "kiss my grits!" Standard diner breakfast food, nothing remarkable. The bacon was skinny and greasy, and we could not keep asking each other why in the hell anybody would pay six bucks for four pieces of this stuff. So, if you're just looking for greasy diner food, pool your quarters together and come here downtown. My recommendation: go to the Chick-fil-A two blocks away.

I agreed to come to this place with a friend based on her recommendation. I feel like the reviews on here are misleading. First of all the waitress proceeded to tell us how she doesn't have enough money to pay for college and had to pay a lot of money for some shots at the doctors office. Then my steak came out and it was tasteless and unevenly cooked. One side was medium and the other side was almost rare. On top of that I found a hair stuck to the side that was definitely not mine. The rolls that everyone talked about were overdone. My friend who I went with even said it was not as good. Overall bad experience. Won't be going back.

Veal cutlet with brown gravy was superb, as I had been told it would be. I'd definitely come back.

My husband and I were in town for the marathon. We picked this place for two reasons, its proximity to our hotel and the previous Yelp reviews. The first impression walking in, was that it smelled old and unclean. It kinda reminded me of one of those hotels in Downtown Vegas that tried to get rid of the smoke smell by throwing up a coat of paint. Not good. I ordered the enchiladas. It's pretty hard to mess up, right? I'm pretty sure it was cooked by Chef Mic(rowave). It tasted like a Kraft American single was melted on top of some Wolf Chili. Ugh. It was so not good. The hubster got chicken fried steak. The steak looked grey, even under the tan gravy. The fries that came with his entree were obviously frozen and yet the best part of both of our meals. Oh and the "great" rolls everyone talks about? They were dense and chewy. When I think of good rolls, I want them to be light and fluffy. Other observations: it seemed to be someone's sole job to keep at least 20 glasses full of iced-tea prepared at all times. Seriously. There was a guy near the back of the restaurant and all he did was fill glasses with ice and iced tea. When the ice began to melt, he added more ice. Yum. I overheard someone mentioning the lack of vegetarian options. The service was ok. We were told that this place gave discounts to runners, but ours failed to include it on our tab. I really wanted to like this place. I was willing to embrace the kitschiness of it, but the lack of freshness and the feeling that at any point the crew from "Kitchen Nightmares" was going to emerge from the kitchen mean we won't return.

I was in town for the Mississippi Blues Marathon. I always research in advance where I will eat when traveling. After running 26.2 miles, I was looking forward to dinner at a down home restaurant in the deep south. After walking into the restaurant, I was immediately welcomed by the owner and sat at a booth somewhat near the front counter where he was working. Very friendly owner who told me that they have been open for over 40 years and is a landmark in Jackson. A friendly (and very cute) waitress comes by to take my order. From my extensive research, I know that I MUST order the veal cutlets with cream sauce. This is one of their signature dishes. My first bite and there is a party going on in my mouth! Man, this is some rocking veal cutlets!!! Very tender, cooked to perfection with a hearty and flavorful (but not overpowering) cream sauce. The only thing that looks better than the veal is the waitress. My future wife (the waitress) then brings me their famous yeast rolls fresh from the oven. I don't want to look too much like a tourist as I know I am supposed to put their "comeback" sauce on it. These rolls were so fluffy and delectable and that comeback sauce I piled on just made the party in my mouth even more kicking. The owner's wife sees how much this New Yorker is enjoying their food, that she brings me a custard pie for dessert! While my stomach was full, I have one rule in life...Never say No to pie! Whoaa! That is one seriously good custard pie, one of the best I've had!!! Nice, comfortable and clean restaurant but retains a lot of its charm. Friendly and efficient service. The typical example of Southern Hospitality. Guess I'll have to fly back soon to have another go for their wonderful food and work up a marriage proposal to the waitress a.k.a. my fiance.

For breakfast, they have AMAZING biscuits! They have a person that comes in the wee-hours to make the biscuits and then goes home. Yes, a professional bisuit maker! Dear me, and the ham is the real deal, cut straight off the bone- none of that chopped and pressed stuff. My eggs were perfectly ffried medium, and the grits are much more awesome with a pat or two of butter. The coffee is very tasty, hot, and a bottomless cup. Delicious! Get ready for the, "honey" "sugar" and "sweetie" talk from the staff that have been there forever! Oh, and they also have someone that makes the yeast rolls for lunch and dinner. For lunch, I highly recommend their enchilada which is a lot like the Tex-Mex enchiladas from Texas. I truly enjoy patronizing this historic, family-run, restaurant that continues to crank out delicious food at a very reasonable price.
