Port City Café offers friendly service and a decent breakfast. I guess I am spoiled by the large variety of restaurants in New Orleans and the surrounding cities. You would think I would remember that not everywhere has that many places to choose from, but I am a relatively slow learner. That, coupled with the large amount of time it had been since I had visited the Gulf Coast and I was left trying out a bunch of new places. I love eating out for breakfast. It is the one meal that I don't like cooking, and like to find good breakfast food wherever I go. The reviews for Port City seemed pretty good so we headed there one morning. The place was relatively empty when we arrived so we were promptly seated. Our server was great at suggesting items, very friendly, and even offered to change the TV station to help distract the younger members of my party. I was excited to try the biscuits, as I had read so many good things about them in other reviews. Besides the biscuits and gravy, I also ordered an omelet for my meal. The food was good, but not great. I think it is comparable to an IHOP or similar chain. I expected more based on the reviews, but maybe it is better at lunch time.

Here's the dirt on this place: food was good, service started good, but they felt the need to send over a back-waiter? Bus boy? Owner? to rudely ask us to leave after we had finished our breakfast. I have worked service industry my entire life, I cannot believe that someone who does this professionally would treat a customer this way. The elderly couple next to us let us know that after witnessing his behavior they would never eat there again. Good luck and head somewhere else if possible

Very friendly staff, great prices, great food! We went for breakfast, I had the breakfast platter, my son had biscuits, the kids had hot cakes. My wife was a rebel and asked to order from the lunch menu - she got a shrimp poboy, the bread was fresh and the shrimp was well seasoned, fresh and flavorful. Will be sure to visit again next time we pass thru!

Probably should of turned right around and left once we went inside. The restaurant was dimly lit, only 2 other tables with patrons. Ordered a simple burger and club sandwich. Husband enjoyed his club sandwich but my burger was to well done (crispy even) and very dry.

The lunch specials are a good deal; however, what I did not like was the fact that the salads and salad dressings were seating in an old rusted fridge that looked like it had survived Katrina. Too my bad luck I noticed after I was done with my meal. The owner did greet everyone and asked how the meal was, but they definately have to do something about that fridge.

The second-worst meal I've ever had. Ever. We ordered coffee, which didn't arrive for almost 20 minutes. After that amount of time, our server came out with one cup for our table of five, saying the coffee machine broke. That one cup was undrinkably bitter, so we weren't heartbroken about the missing four. (Which, incidentally, didn't come for another 20 minutes, after which we cancelled our order.) After about 30 minutes, the server returned to tell us that they had no tortillas, so they couldn't make a breakfast burrito. (This realization took 30 minutes.) While we were waiting, a man came into the dining room and inexplicably started loudly nailing a taxidermy fish to the wall. So, that was a thing. The food (minus the breakfast burrito) came after about 40 minutes, which was remarkable considering we were literally the only people in the restaurant. The best way I can describe the look of the food was "beige." Literally everything on everyone's plate was the same color. Eggs, toast, biscuits, grits, cheese food product... Beige. The biscuits, incidentally, were clearly Pillsbury, and burned on the bottom. Everything was greasy, bland, and dense. The last straw came when I bit down on a large chunk of dishwashing detergent in my grits. That was it. Never again.

Horrible horrible horrible. Over the hour and a half it took to get our food, they slowly delivered two of the three cups of coffee we ordered. The grits were terrible and eggs unevenly cooked. Avoid. Edit: three of us got stomach illness off the food

Very slow service, not so clean. Took over half an hour for our order from the moment we ordered to be served even though there were only few ppl in the restaurant.

Stopped in for breakfast. I had the fiesta omelet (which was huge and fluffy and I shared with one of my teenagers). One of the boys had the chicken fajita omelet to which he said 'there may be a whole chicken in here and it tastes like 'swooooot' which I think is a good thing. The other teenager had the breakfast burrito which he loved and looked like it was portioned a little more to my liking (smaller but not skimpy). The service was delightful. I was surprised to see that it wasn't very busy on a Saturday mid morning, but some families started coming in for lunch as we were finishing up.

FREE WIFI!!!! That's always wonderful. You can walk into this very relaxed atmosphere and order not the most delicious breakfast in the world, but it's still good and AFFORDABLE! My egg and cheese and bacon sandwich was $1.39. The coffee was more expensive at $1.59, but you also get free refills! It took a little longer than I'd like for the biscuit to get to us. I guess that's what kept it from the full 5 stars.

Casual dive that offers generous home style servings for a great price. Daily lunch and dinner specials are available. The atmosphere is dated but some may be into that look.

Our waitress was very sweet and courteous. The food however was not so great. The veggie omelet was good because it was made to order. The biscuits were undoubtedly microwaved. The advertised skin on hash browned red potatoes were more reminiscent of the tips of McDonald's frenchfries. To add further to our visit my wife found a hair on her food. We're not food snobs and don't typically leave bad reviews, but the food was subpar in an area that normally has great food.

This breakfast place has gone downhill since last year. The burnt fried grease smell is still here, strong as ever. But, this time the table and menus are sticky, and the coffee undrinkable. there's no tea and the waitstaff is indifferent. last time for us.

it's labeled as a Cajon restaurant. There was nothing Cajon about the food other than gombo. I was there for lunch and seems like half of the items on the menu were not available. The service was terrible. The server was too old to be a server and didn't even come by to check on us at all for any drink refills. It took over 30 minutes to get our food. It was way too slow especially for the lunch time. The food was ok, Nothing special. After 30 min of waiting ,my gumbo came out cold and fries were cold. They also brought out the salad in a styrofoam bowl which was awful to eat out of. You better hope not to stab the lettuce too hard. I would not recommend this place. By the way I am a visitor out of Atlanta area and it's a good thing the locals have low expectations and like this place because I would not go back there. I can't think of a single positive thing to say about this restaurant.

Not impressed. Kitchen looked dirty, tables and menus were sticky, the building, while old, needs a lot of upkeep (even though it was damaged in Hurricane Katrina, that was nearly 10 years ago so no longer an excuse). Despite many TVs (they were proud to tell us they were flat screens... really?), they do not sell alcohol and are not open after lunch to sit and watch games. My wife ordered breakfast - the eggs were overcooked and biscuits were dry. I ordered the shrimp Po-Boy which had a huge bun, modest fried/frozen shrimp, and scant trimmings. Despite a plethora of staff, service was slow as most of the kids were more interested in horsing around (and loudly). A Mississippi "delicacy" is fried dill pickle chips. Port City is NOT the place to try them. The pickles were soft, the batter unseasoned, and there were no classic 'dips' as sides. I give 2 stars because the bill was low. You will do much better going a mile west on US-90 to Harbor View Cafe or across the street to Tony's [artisan] Pizzeria.

One of my favorite standby's to eat at. Breakfast is always great and lunch is just the same. Service is always to par and very well priced. Lunch specials are always good but the many different sandwiches kickass.

This place has good po-boys. The pot roast and catfish are our favorites. Fries are good, vegis are sysco and a little salty. Stick to the po-boys and fries. Beniets are good and made fresh. Only has 1 outdoor table with 3 chairs. Staff is friendly. Restrooms are very clean.

Yummy breakfast! Friendly attentive service and good coffee. What else could you ask for...also the owner is on site and in the action, which you know I love! They accommodated our party of ten with ease and we all left happy! Would definitely recommend.

Not the best, but not the worst. It's very average diner food. The staff is friendly and the decor is quirky, though, which made it worth it. Prices are reasonable.

My husband and I went here for a late breakfast. Holy crap the food was so good! Our server Tina was fantastic! She was extremely nice and hooked us up with some of the most awesome chocolate milk I've ever had! The food was delicious! Their biscuits and gravy were by favorite! Loved everything! The portions were huge and it was reasonably priced! I couldn't even eat everything off my plate! I give this restaurant a 5 star approval! I would definitely come here again!

Went here with my mom for a late breakfast and we both ordered omelets. Sorry to say the omelets weren't just bad they were very very very bad. There were 2 unmelted slices of "American cheese" inside of an overcooked egg with cold peppers and onions inside. When the manager or owner stopped by our table to ask about the food, we told him and he smiled and walked away. Then our server brought the check. I'm not sure how lunch or dinner are here but if breakfast is any indication, don't waste your time or money.

We went here because I was craving a breakfast burrito. Even though the waitress tells me theyre out of salsa I order one. 15 min later the cook comes out and says he's out of tortillas. 15 minutes later my breakfast finally comes out, a scramble with toast on the side. We were the only ones in there, I don;t know how it took half an hour. Whatever, anyway... it was disappointing because I was looking forward to my breakfast burrito. My fiance got the biscuits and gravy - definitely getting that if they dont have salsa/tortillas again

It had been a while since I last visited and I have to give them props on the renovations and expansion. With the addition of the side dining room this small and stuffy eatery has been transformed into a lively, plasma filled lunch spot with ample space and seating for groups of all sizes. While parking is still a bear, if you dont mind walking half a block, you should try this lunch time hot spot. I had the boneless backed chicken (*** 1/2 stars) which was served wit mash potatoes (*** stars) and a choice of a third side.[I had the peas (*** stars)] It was also served a dessert choice between chocolate cake (*** stars) and something else. But the real attraction here and something you must try before you go, is their freshly baked and ooh so good yeast rolls (****1/2 stars). For those with a finicky palate you may find this place to be more up your alley, I just wish there was a tad bit more depth and spice to the food.

very nice atmosphere in downtown gulfport. Spacious & home feeling. I had the 'Downtown Club' - very nice. They brought my wife the wrong sandwich, but quickly made another & gave it to us on the house. Very hospitable.

I've done lunch here a dozen times. Nothing ever excites me about their menu, but when I'm looking for a wholesome cooked lunch, I do enjoy a plate of the pork chops with mash potatoes. Just about every special I tried of their's has been on the bland side.

Ate lunch here with a friend about 3 months ago. I remember liking the food - yummy fries stuck with me - but LOVING the service. Our server and someone else (manager? he never said) took care of our every whim. He even convinced me I need a go cup!

Since I work downtown this is a great location to grab a quick lunch. I always go for the gumbo, both the seafood and chicken and sausage have been very tasty. (I should note that I'm a yankee transplant so my idea of spicy maybe way different from others). The service is polite and the owner is a joy to talk to. It can get busy at lunch but tables open up quickly. I wouldn't drive from Biloxi to eat here but if you work downtown or nearby its a good place for lunch -- and breakfast!

I will definitely eat here again. The food was just excellent and the service was very good. My association ate here with 26 people and did a single bill. We contacted the owner before we arrived to get the Menu and had all my members pre-ordered before we arrived. The bread rolls were excellent and I broke from my diet and ate 5 all by myself. Bean, Rice and Sausage were very tasty, recommend. Would have been 5 stars but the City Meter Maid got our tag # and was going to ticket us if we were not gone within an hour. (Not restaurants fault)

I will never waste my money at this restaurant again. Every time I enter this restaurant it gets a little bit worse. My most recent trip to this dive and the straw that broke the camel's back happened last weekend. I went in for breakfast and ordered the fiesta omelet. I had ordered this omelet on 2 previous occassions and was familiar with what ingredients should be in it (I also read the menu before ordering). When the omelet was served it was filled with chunks of pot roast instead of the promised bacon & sausage. I asked the waitress why my omelet was filled with pot roast. She stated that she wasn't sure, but would ask the owner who happened to be working in the kitchen on this particular morning. His response was that "Yes, that is how it comes, but that is not how it comes on the menu." Huh? I ate the eggs and pushed the chunks of roast to the side. You can imagine my delight when I approached the counter to pay and saw "Pot Roast Special $5" still on the sign from yesterday's lunch. So, this owner actually thinks that it does not matter what the menu states, he can just force whatever leftover food they have in the kitchen on paying customers??????? Without even letting the customer know ?????? Does he actually think that his customers are so stupid that they will not realize he's shoving unordered / unwanted items on them??????? Talk about arrogance. This incident was the final straw for me at this dump. They are repeatedly out of menu items - which is fine, if you let the customer know before you serve them the dish. On several occasions my lunch simply did not come with the salad or side dish that the menu stated would be served. The waitresses never fail to "forget" to mention that they are out of the item until you ask. I will NEVER WASTE ANOTHER CENT IN THIS DUMP!
