This place is okay. We live nearby and finally went to try it out. The fried zucchini and mushrooms were probably the best part, but there's better BBQ in the metro. The pulled pork was a little dry and uninteresting, but it satisfied my hunger. I guess anything edible would satisfy hunger, though. anyways, I really don't see any reason to come back. Even the need for a last-minute dinner wouldn't bring me back. Not because it's bad, but because it's not that great.

I've spent a lot of my life living in and frequenting Independence. I'm not proud of this, but I turned out okay, I think. Much of my high school friend-hanging-out existence was spent hanging out at Independence Center, Barnes and Noble, the movie theater, and the chain restaurants in the area. So up until about a year ago, I thought Smokehouse BBQ was another national chain. And honestly, if you're in a town like this, why even try BBQ from a national chain? It just seems like a sin. But apparently, Smokehouse is a local chain. It just happens to be smack dab in the middle of a bunch of national chains and it blends in with the suburban scenery. Unfortunately, so does most of its food. Some of my friends like coming here; it's a fairly inexpensive meal with good-sized portions, the food isn't bad, and it's a sit-down restaurant setting rather than your old-fashioned BBQ joint. More of a Jack Stack-like setting but certainly not up to Jack Stack standards. I'll still say that it's okay though. I'd give it 2 1/2 stars if I could. The sauce is tasty enough, but not good enough to compete with the big BBQ names in town. The super crispy (burnt end) sandwich is about the only thing I've noticed really worth getting here, having both a good value and flavor. Everything else I've tried has been pretty mediocre and unimpressive. At the end of the day, I'd much rather drive a few miles farther and get accosted by the employees at Gates for a PORK ON BUN, PLEASE.

Quite possibly the worst BBQ I have ever tasted. I guess if you like seasoned ketchup as the pool of gross that they float everything in, eat here. Its terrible, the brisket is tasteless, the pulled pork was dry inside yet somehow was oozing grease out of it and then the oh so wonderful ketchup...I mean bbq sauce. Way over priced for the garbage they serve. how they have been in business so long is beyond me.

This place was actually pretty good. One sidebar- in the men's room, there is one of those baby changing stations on the wall. I assume this is where you clean up the encrusted feces from your child's behind when out to dinner or lunch. Anyway, I noticed that someone scratched out the "C" in changing station. It then read 'Baby hanging station.' Yikes. They might not love babies there. Really ironic to me because why would they then provide a diaper changing station? Hmm.... Regardless, the food was pretty good. I had some grilled chicken planks with bbq sauce. Pretty typical Kansas City fare. They gave me copious pickle slices which I appreciated. They also had cheesy corn, which was cheesy. They were right about that. I was disappointed that it was not served to me by Chester cheetah. "It ain't easy being cheesy" is that guy's catch phrase. I would have given this place 5 stars had they employed Chester Cheetah. They have a stained glass ceiling dealy. I liked it because I'm partial to stained glass, and honestly who ain't?

Service was fine Ate here mid afternoon on a Friday on the way home from the airport. Was actually surprised at how many people eating here at that time. Ordered the sweet corn nuggets. Nothing special and wouldn't order them again. My daughter told me they serve the exact same thing at one of the local Chinese restaurants where she goes to school. I am sure off the same truck. Ordered a large Burnt end sandwich with baked beans and fries. Was really a pretty good sandwich. Had a choice of a couple of sauces. OK for a local chain. Convenient for my needs. Obviously, if you have the time and inclination there are lots of better BBQ places in the KC area. Try LC's for a BBQ joint. Jack Stack for more upscale.

OK! Here we go... I went to Smokehouse BBQ yesterday evening. I went to Independence Mall to get some Topsy's and I got hungry. I had been craving BBQ for a week and I couldn't decide where to go. A few days ago I walked into Gates. However I didn't eat there because I couldn't hang. I live in Atlanta right now and I have not stepped in Gates for years. I forgot about the yelling and confusion. So I left. Anyway, being at Independence Mall put me right across the street from Smokehouse. I decided to try it because I had never been there, and never heard about it. I wish I had sucked it up and got Gates. When I try BBQ I want ribs. If you do ribs well the other meat is usually great too! I got the combo platter with pork spare ribs and burnt ends. #1 THE SAUCE: FLAVORLESS!!!!!!!! It tasted like a red glob of nothing. It was so nasty and there it was poured all over my meat. #2 THE MEAT: the burnt ends had no flavor and were sort of tough. The burnt part was not edible in any sort of way. The ribs were not that great but they were better than the burnt ends. The name smokehouse is a total exaggeration. There was no smoky flavor whatsoever. I had to really extend my senses as far as they could go to get a hint of flavor. #3 THE FRIES: OFF THE CHAIN! These are some of the best fries I have ever had. Thick and Crispy. That is hard to get right. I couldn't stop eating them. #4 THE BEANS: GREAT!!!! I dipped my fries in the beans. Wow!!!! So Good! I don't know how many more exclamation points I have to use for you to understand how much I loved the beans and the fries. They need to go back to the drawing board on meat and sauce. Next time I'm in the area and in the mood for fries i will fore go Chick-Fil-A and Burger King and stop by Smokehouse... lol

I was at a bank in Blue Springs, MO talking to the teller about Italian Food. Thats when I asked her where I could find a good Itailian beef sandwich in the area. The bank went silent, they asked what an Italian Beef Sandwich was, " Like BBQ beef?" they asked. Thats when I remembered I was in MO. They recommended a BBQ restaurant called Smokehouse in Independence, MO. I went to that location and entered through the double wood front doors. In the lobby area was a large brass hog, surrounded by plants. The restaurant was decorated with a fire place, plants and a sky light. There was table seating in a carpeted area. There was also a bar with " Happy Hour" from 4pm-6pm. I was greeted and quickly seated. Steven was my waiter and provided good service. I had a spicy Bloody Mary which was very refreshing. To eat I had a BBQ Beef 10 inch sanchwich, with fries and cheese corn. The beef was fresh and sliced just right. The BBQ was one of the better sauces I have had. Just good MO, BBQ. I purchases a $15.00, three bottle gift set. This place also caters in the Kansas City, MO. area. If in the area, I say give it a try, great for the family. Just good BBQ with MO. customer service. (: Go for it.

There have been two times in my life that I've ever taken the time to actually write a review. Typically I think people have difference tastes and I leave it at that. Unfortunately I'm struggling a bit to let go. The service was acceptable, the waiter advised us of what was best regarding sides and meats as we ordered. Not being BBQ aficionados, my wife and I ordered large platters with multiple meats so we'd have some take home. I had the beef and sausage and my wife the pork, sausage and brisket. The plates arrived with meats slathered in sauce which is not customary for any BBQ restaurant I've been to. Typically there is sauce on the table, a variety of types and heats to choose from, and the meats are stand-alone, featured for their smoky flavor without being dunked. Not at "Smokehouse", which didn't strike me as too terribly odd until we had some. The brisket was grey, no smoke ring and was a bit slimy- it appeared boiled and placed on the plate. When forking it, it held onto the other slices on the plate and they slithered off each other and dropped back on to the plate. The pork wasn't bad, but didn't have much flavor beyond the sauce. The sausage had little texture and although tender had so much sauce on it already, I found it lacking. The fries were over fried (I didn't order fries) and my wife's coleslaw was bought in I'm sure. The beans were quite good however my order was a small side in addition to the fries I didn't order and the coleslaw never did arrive. The stacks weren't smoking which should have been a clue, the food coming from the kitchen was dripping in sauce which should have been a clue and there was no sauce on the table which should have been a clue. When the waiter returned to the table to clear it, he realized he was taking two full plates (I ate 2 bites of sausage and 1 of brisket and my wife half the pork, bite of brisket, and some sausage) back to the dumpster. He asked if we wanted any boxes and was told no at which he didn't say a word. We both had the impression he knew the food wasn't very good due to lack of inquiry as to why he was taking one full plate back and the majority of another large platter to the dumpster. In all, I feel a bit taken to be honest. It's chain BBQ of very low quality. We stopped on our way through KC headed home to Columbia, MO from a trip to Colorado looking for good KC BBQ! What a disappointment! I've given it one star because that's what's required to write a review. I'd strongly recommend going elsewhere. I'm not going to promote anyone else but would rather just honestly suggest you not spend your money here. It wasn't "not real good", it was REALLY, REALLY BAD.

Sergio was our waiter and he provided exceptional customer service - very friendly, fast and professional. Made our dining experience wonderful! Tasty BBQ, but somewhat small portions of burnt ends for the price. Side dishes were not very exciting or high quality. BBQ sauces are tasty though - try all 3!

LOVE Smokehouse! My husband and I visit KCMO usually once or twice a year to see family. We always eat at Smokehouse at least once, if not twice. I always get a burntend sandwich, usually the Gladstoner or the Super Crispy, and a side of beans. My husband always gets the burntend platter. I could drink the sauce! LOVE you Smokehouse and wish you would open a location in SF bay area!

Service was just OK. Quality of the food was terrible. Smokehouse warms up all their meats in the microwave making it chewy and then they sauce it to try to keep it from drying out. Their pulled pork, beef, and pork all had very little flavor. The side dishes get mixed reviews. The sides are small portions for the price. The beans and slaw were very good. Sweet potato fries were just 1 inch pieces "nibs" for $ 2.50 . If you want sauce you have to ask for it. If you like your BarBQue microwaved this place is for you. Otherwise don't waste your money.

My family enjoys the food very much, but it was on my Mom's 80th Birthday we were last there, because it is her favorite restaurant, and the food and service for our party of 52 was exceptional. They provided the food quickly and all together and they waiters were very, very courteous and helpful. Not one of the bills had a mistake, our cups were always full and the food was hot and fresh when delivered.. Kudos to the Chefs and staff!!!!

I can't believe this place has such low reviews. It's really a get spot where you can sit down and have great BBQ! The place is beautiful on the inside and the service is always great. When it comes to the food I just have two words, Super Crispy!
