If you are looking for EXCELLENT Mexican food in Independence, then El Volcan is the place for you. It is set in what used to be an old Winchell's Donut place, but don't let that detour you. I have been going to El Volcan for some time now (even before they changed their name to El Volcan) and my in-laws eat there at least 1-2 times a week. In my opinion, they are one of the best Mexican food restaurants in the area. The restaurant is a family run operation and the staff is very personable. The food has always been good and for a very reasonable price. There has not been one thing that I have had that was bad! Funny fact, from time to time I see workers from other Mexican restaurants eating here in their uniforms/shirts. Now, why would someone who makes a living making Mexican food eat at another Mexican place unless that food is Better than theirs... just saying.

We stumbled upon this place while running an errand and so glad we did. I nice little dive place with very comfortable decor. The staff was remarkably friendly and made you feel at home. The food was fantastic, with moist, high quality chicken, savory pork that melts in your mouth and fresh ingredients all around. The guacamole is made to order and is some of the best in the area. I don't venture to the burbs often, but this time I was glad it did! If I ever get out this way again, I will definitely return. Hell, I might just make a special trip!

This place is OK....but really is just a tex mex place. I had hoped that it would have some authenticity...but this is just decent watered down American Mexican food. When hungry...this place will do just fine.

From the outside this place doesn't look like much, since it's a tiny restaurant next to a laundry mat, but the food is very good! The chips and salsa were so tasty and I ate so many that I couldn't finish my plate the last time I was in here. I almost always order an enchilada with rice and beans when I eat Mexican food, and theirs definitely stack up against the competition. They also have a special deal every day of the week, so lots of opportunity to sample the menu. I have never eaten here for dinner so I can't say what kind of service to expect when the restaurant is full, but this is a fantastic place to visit for lunch. I substracted a star because the service sometimes can be just a smidge slower than I would like, especially since my table is usually trying to work within a scheduled lunch break, but the staff is very friendly and since the food is awesome, I can't really complain.

Best open face steak tacos on corn tortillas with cilantro and onion I have ever had. Authentic. I can't comment on other food because this is all I get.

Thank you Yelpers. We tried El Volcan because of your reviews and we are glad we did. There were four of us and all were happy with our meals. You can get a feel for the place by its chips, salsa, and guacamole. The chips were large, fresh, and crispy. The sauce was very mild but mixed with their hot sauce it was perfect. The guacamole was made to order. The steak fajitas were tender and perfectly done. The cheese enchiladas and beef enchiladas were good, with an excellent sauce. Tacos were flash fried. Tamales were a nice mix of pork and corn. Generous portions of rice and retried beans. Our server was efficient and engaged with us. Kept our glasses full. The only complaint was the warm temperature on this hot and humid day. The place is small and the tables are packed tight.

Really really great authentic Mexican food... Small place so go early.. You can tell they have a very loyal following ,obvious why. The servers do a great job for what they have to work with, small space and lots of customers.

The tacos are fantastic. Although a little on the small side, they are delicious! Just order a bunch if you're a fatty like me! Add to that a full bar and sports on the TV (usually soccer) and you've got a good night out in a nice, family run establishment.

Completely despicable and the ONLY reason I am giving this place one star is because it won't let me give 0. We purchased a restaurant.com coupon and when we came in to eat I immediately showed the coupon from the official restaurant.com app. The manager was a complete prick and told us that he had no idea the app even existed and that he refused to take our purchased coupon without an actual slip of paper. Mind you we PURCHASED the gift certificate and his attitude was inexcuseable! If he would have KINDLY explained his reasons for living in the 18th century, I may not have been so livid. He clearly did not know how to run a business or treat customers. With my fiancee being an accomplished chef in KC and myself having worked in the restaurant industry for 6+ years during college, this will not be the end of this.

This is our new favorite place to go to. Tim C. said the combo plate was good and it was excellent, my son looked at my plate and said, "I should have gotten that". My husband and son got the fajitas, daughter in law got the fajita taco salad all were very good. My husband and I split a Chile Relleno, because we love these, best one yet. My grandson plays Pop Warner football in Independence and we will be going there after EVERY game, can't wait til Saturday, yum.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
