Hunt’s Dairy Bar

403 Sainte Genevieve Ave
Farmington, 63640
Reviews:
A regular visit for us whenever, and I mean WHENEVER we come to Farmington. Lost are the days of the carhop dairy bar experience (...not talking about you, SONIC!). This particular restaurant has been a mainstay in this community for generations. This has been a hangout spot for folks since the late 1950's. People would meet at Hunt's and then head out for a night of excitement. It's great to see that that tradition continues! Our visits to Farmington would not be complete without double western burgers, french fries, fried cauliflower, fried mushrooms, and fried cheese balls. Of course, we wash all that down with pineapple Dr. Peppers. This is the only place I've ever been where they actually put a ring of real pineapple in your Dr. Pepper. If you haven't had this, you've gotta try it! All this food and drink is usually followed with a stomach ache, a bit of shameful guilt, and a little "...did we just destroy all that?" But it is SO worth it. The food is great every time, and the service is exactly what you'd expect from a carhop experience. It's a first come-first serve setup, and if you don't have the patience to chill in your car while the staff at Hunt's are preparing your food, then you can feel free to move yourself down to the nearest McDarnall's for that. The point is, you're in Farmington...not St. Louis, not Kansas City, or some other large city. Things don't move as fast in Farmington as they do in larger cities, and that's what the experience is all about. If you want big city experience, feel free to head north for about an hour and a half. You'll find what you're looking for. If you want a solid local experience, get yourself over to Hunt's. You won't regret it!
This place is a Farmington staple and has been there for decades. It's mostly carside service but you can eat at the picnic tables out front. It's definitely a greasy spoon category of food, but the food tastes great and that's what really matters. It's also crazy cheap. You can get a better burger and fries here than at any fast food joint and pay less in the process.
I love Hunt's... aside from Pad Thai this is the thing I miss most about Farmington and what I haven't found a comparison for where I moved to. The burgers are delicious, the fries are plentiful and perfectly cooked (for something different try the sweet potato fries with the marshmallow dipping sauce... wow) and the ice cream is off the chain. A great throwback to the dairy barn/burger drive-ups of old. They don't take cards, so make sure you have another payment option handy!

Lix Frozen Custard

1007 N Washington St
Farmington, 63640
Reviews:
The custard is great! I prefer it over Ted Drewes but the toppings are meh. While they have a decent amount of choices I feel as though the quality isn't there. Service is mixed - sometimes you get great service, other times the employees will just be talking to one another - typical of an ice cream joint staffed by high school kids. Great place to stop if you're in Farmington but I wouldn't go too far out of the way for it.
The service is great & the custard is amazing. Plenty of choices. Great diner type atmosphere. Family friendly. We will be back!
I love Silky's. I live fairly equidistant between the Ellisville and Creve Coeur locations, so it's almost too easy to overindulge on some delicious custard. Like most custard places, Silky's offers featured concretes with preselected ingredients. In addition, they often have a limited-time concrete. My favorite is Muddy Sneakers: peanut butter, hot fudge, and peanut butter cups. I'm not native to the area, so I don't know the history of Silky's. However, I've heard that it used to be called Lix. Imagine my surprise when I discovered there is a Lix in Farmington and that they offer Muddy Sneakers ALL THE TIME. Now, I suppose I could just go to Silky's and have a concrete made with the Muddy Sneakers ingredients. But what's the fun in that? Maybe Lix is the same as Silky's, but I wouldn't know unless I tried it. Farmington is a good 90-minute trip from home, and logically, I realized that it was borderline crazy to travel to Farmington just for custard. Fortunately, I had another reason to head south. I recently adopted two kittens whose mother was rescued from Farmington Animal Control. Bonus! An opportunity to get custard AND check out the stomping grounds of my kittens' mother? Who's driving? Let me tell you, it was a long trip. I used to live in a rural area, where I routinely made 45-minute drives just to go places that take me 10-20 minutes in the STL area. I've now lived in The Lou long enough that, on the trip to Farmington, I found myself reverting back to my six-year-old mindset of "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" But it was so worth it. My Muddy Sneakers was the best Muddy Sneakers I've ever had. So smooth. I don't say this often, but it had an ample amount of peanut butter. It was absolutely perfect. I don't know what makes Muddy Sneakers so darn good. I can't seem to duplicate it by ordering the same ingredients elsewhere. Lix is on Facebook, but they don't have a website. I took pictures of the menu while I was there. See something you like? Head over to Farmington. You can't miss the building; there's a huge ice cream cone in front of it. They have ample parking, a large interior dining area, some outdoor benches, and a drive-thru. They're well-prepared for taking your custard order and allowing you to eat in your choice of an indoor, outdoor, or vehicular setting. :) I don't know if they are open year-round. With a drive-thru and indoor seating, you'd think so. However, you might want to call ahead if you lose your mind and decide you want to make a 3-hour round-trip for custard. ;)

Twin Oaks Vineyard

Reviews:
First thing I noticed when I walked in was the cool autographs found all over the tasting room and bathrooms. It was a busy afternoon and the place was full. They are under construction building an outdoor pavilion that looks like it will be pretty cool when they are done. They charge $5 to do a tasting of a few wines (which I don't like, but each their own). The lady doing the tasting was friendly and we were able to buy a bottle to take home.
This is owned by a very friendly family. We like their "Two Brothers" sweet wine. It is a great compliment to chinese food. Yes, we admit, we have bought a case. When they have a band playing it is a very pleasant place to sit back and listen to the music and enjoy wine.
Once we hit every winery in Ste. Genevieve that we wanted to, I saw a sign for Twin Oaks and decided that since we still had daylight hours left to burn, we should check this place out as well. We trekked out to Farmington and pulled in to what was a beautiful facility. They had a fun "Caution, Adults Playing" sign out front in their parking lot, which already indicated that this place had character to it. We walked in and were pleased with the ambiance and the friendliness of the owner. All of the wines and sangrias were quite excellent too. They also have their share of events that they host which sounded quite fun and would recommend checking out; we want to return for their grape stomping contest one day.

when reviewing a place like McDonalds, one can only expect to get so excited about it, however keeping my level of excitement to a lower level, I will rave about this location. I call this my "lake location" of McDonald's, since I use it only when I am down at the lake property, and I must say that it is second on my list of locations of this chain. the employees here are extremely nice, everyone uses my 3 favorite words, please, thanks, and your welcome, words that are so lost in modern customer service these days. I don't know if it's because of its rural location, but it is one McDonald's I honestly do enjoy visiting. The restaurant is very clean, and they do what they can to keep their lines moving fast and efficiently as they can, do yourself a favor when in the Farmington Area and visit this location when your hungry, you will be glad you did...

I am really starting to believe the whole location theory, because this location by far outweighs my last review of another location. I had such a pleasant experience dining here, the staff was super nice, the service was great and the best of it all, the food was actually good! I am guessing it really all does depend on how much you love your job and how much pride you take in to it when your working, because it shows here. the food came out fully cooked and full of flavor, yes there is only so much flavor from a pepperoni personal pan pizza, but hey it was dang good! I'm glad my faith was restored in this franchise, because it's been around since I was a wee little lad, and just because its been around that long, doesn't mean it has to taste like it's been around that long. YES I will return to this location for future meals, and hopefully I can walk out again and hold my head up with dignity when I say I just ate at Pizza Hut.
