The legendary Sub Shop! Whenever I am back in Columbia, which is unfortunately rare these days, this is a must-visit stop. Those of us that grew up in Columbia know why. Back in the day and still today, this is/was the best place to get a baked sub - anywhere. The menu has changed little over the years, because the Sub Shop knows what works, and has never needed to mess with the formula too much. I have lived all over the place since leaving Columbia, but the Sub Shop was so unique and true, that I have never found it's equal in its category in all my travels. New Orleans has the Muffalatta, NYC has the Italian and Columbia has the Sub Shop and it's Baked Veggie Sub. My favorite is the veggie on whole wheat with roast beef. But all of the sandwiches are good, and over the years I tried them all. I recommend the Cheesy Tomato soup on a cold winter day, and the French onion soup is also good and often overlooked. Anyone passing through Columbia would be well served to stop at the Sub Shop and get one of their famous subs. You'll wish you had a place that makes baked subs this good near you after you do. I often try to recreate these masterpieces as home but only succeed in creating a pale imitation. I'll be back some day Sub Shop - for my veggie w/ roast beef on whole wheat! Keep the ovens warm!

The seedy exterior, faded decor, and the grease coating everything should have warned me off, but I ignored my instincts and ordered a roast beef sub. After having my order taken by an apathetic woman, I sat down and waited. Eventually the same woman showed up with most of my order. She was unconcerned that my drink was missing, so I went back to the counter and and got it. The bread was burned, the meat was nearly absent, and the only seasoning was a flavorless, white dressing. Not planning on eating here again in this lifetime.

DON'T EAT HERE!!! The first thing you will notice walking in the door of this place is that its filthy, probably hasnt been cleaned since they opened the door 20 years ago. The next thing is the gaping whole in the ceiling dripping water into buckets in five places on the floor. If you haven't turned around yet you will be greeted at the counter by a woft of Marijuana smoke as a apathetic employee will proceed to attempt to take you order for an 11.00 sub sandwich (they are all the same price for some reason). After this you can watch an employee with unrestrained dreadlocks clumsily assemble your sandwich without washing their hands. As the person who wraps your sub hands it to you you will realize that they have visible black gunk under their fingernails and just made the drink you are sipping. You might be tempted to ask for your money back at this point but that attempt would be futile because as soon as the mention of Money coming back into your hands happens the Owner will come out and accuse you of "Ripping Him Off" and Bitterly argues with you as he shoves your crinkled dollar bills back in your hand. Bottom line you can go to PIcklemans, Jimmy Johns or Subway and get 2 sandwiches in a clean environment from people that look like they have showered this week. The legend of this place rides high in the old heads of Columbia before there was anything else. The reality is that this place is a crumbling landmark serving mediocre overpriced food. A side note Planet Sub in KC and The subshop in JC are the exact same menu with updated menus. How the original is the worst is a mystery to every one.

Incredible atmosphere with cool album covers lining the walls. That was about the only good thing about this place. I ordered a footling Italian which cost about $12 after tax... incredibly overpriced, if you ask me. Then, I kid you not (we timed it), we were the only people in the entire place and it took 17 minutes to get my sandwich. The Italian was totally average, with boring meat and a relative lack of vegetables. I was incredibly underwhelmed for the hefty price of $12. I would never recommend going here- there are way better deals at sandwich places across town and if you're in a hurry, this place will cause you to claw your eyeballs out due to general anxiety and stress from waiting FOREVER. I promise I'm not using hyperbole- I love sandwiches and I would never wish this sandwich shop on my worst enemy (okay, that was some hyperbole), but seriously, don't go here. You'll thank me later. Also! They advertise their bread as being awesome but it's totally average and forgettable.

Don't be deterred by the horrendous parking lot or the sketchy interior- the subs are surprisingly tasty. I'd definitely recommend the veggie sub.

The place is a cool place to hang out and catch the best buns in town. The food is fresh and tastes great. Favorites are veggie w/bacon, meatball, and the Ruben is to die for. The french onion soup is great and so is their deserts, Cinnamon rolls, cheese cakes, brownies its all good. When you got the munchies this is the place to go. The walls are decorated with fun art, they also have pin ball machines and good music. Hippies unite!

This place is by far the worst food service establishment I have ever eaten at period. Not only is the food just plain bad it is made by literally the scum of the earth. The sandwiches are under done or burnt, the soups are nothing but Campbell's tomato with water or the "home made French onion" is nothing but over salted onion water. Don't even bother with delivery because they will make your food and let it sit on a tray for flies to gather on until another delivery goes with yours resulting in nearly hour long wait times. Customer service is horrible at most locations and even the cleanest of all the Parkade location has rats. If you want a sandwich do yourself a favor and hit the chains around town. When you walk into the place it looks old, dirty, and has a huge leak in the middle of the lobby, at one point the moldy insulation was falling out and leaking water over the tables. Nice try covering it up with horrible artwork. The employees don't wear gloves or hair nets so if you are into overpriced sandwiches made by dirty hippies then eat here otherwise I would recommend Subway over these idiots any day.

It's got piles of fresh produce, Three cheeses and lots of mayo They toast it in the oven Then send you on your way-o. And I can't forget to tell you About a special thing they do here If you're 21 or over They'll deliver a pack of beer.

This review is a 3 star for an average - the food here is worth 4 stars. The tomato soup with cheese is delicious and a fun take on tomato soup. The sandwiches are always good and filling. We have tried several different kinds and they were all tasty. However the 2 star is for the delivery service. Last night we ordered sandwiches to be delivered on their website at 6:12 pm. It took nearly an hour for our delivery to arrive, showing up at about 7:05. All we had ordered was two sandwiches, a cup of soup, and dessert. An hour for delivery on a Monday is kind of ridiculous. And there was no time quote anywhere on the website or in the email confirmation. After we received our food we found our dessert was missing. Although they were quick to say "Oh sorry we'll send that right out!" when we called in, it took another half an hour to get here. So for 2 sandwiches, soup, and a dessert all told it took over 90 minutes to get everything. I will go back to eat in the restaurant because it is tasty (albeit a bit pricey for sandwiches), but I won't order delivery again.

By far the best sandwich anywhere!!! I love the Italian. Perfect bread and the sausage has some heat! I swapped the green peppers for mushrooms making it the perfect sandwich!

Horrific delivery service. Go in to eat, or prepare to wait an hour to get your sandwich delivered. I recommend the veggie with turkey.

I've been eating at Sub Shop for the last 10 years and LOVE the subs. A BLT on wheat with extra America, jalepenos, green peppers and EGG never disappoints. I wonder if i can petition the owners to add this on as a specialty sub and call it the Benjamin SpecIal. Sorry Jerod, $5 footlongs pale in comparison. Peace Love and Subs !!

Yep...it's still here. The Columbia original. I LOVE SUB SHOP! I've loved it since it opened over 30 years ago. The atmosphere has grown along with the number of locations but I still feel the same as I enter...EXCITED to down the best sub sandwich ever. Every time I come back to hometown Columbia I always make a trip or two to The Sub Shop. I took my son this time. He asks about the menu..."What do I get?" he says. For me, it's the same thing I've ordered for over 30 years. Veggie with bacon on wheat please, no black olives. Still served the same...on homemade bread wrapped in aluminum foil. Cheese melting all over the place. Simply delicious and hasn't changed one bit. He decided on the Italian and wasn't very happy with it, then tried mine and said he'd conform to my choice next time. If I would've had room I would've ordered a bowl of their delicious tomato or french onion soup. Those are always good choices as well. I couldn't leave without introducing my son to the "hash brownies" ...something me and my friends dubbed them years ago for their ability to hook you and make you return for more. I think he'll be back... Several locations in Co Mo and delivery straight to your home make The Sub Shop the best sub sandwich for miles around. The service is always good...no wait staff but the staff at the counter have always been courteous and helpful. A limited menu with subs and soups cooked to perfection make this my "go to" restaurant every time I'm rolling through town. I pray that that they never close...

I've found the service at the 8th Street location to sometimes be a little scattered and the music frequently too loud, but the food is consistently great. They still have the best French onion soup I've ever tasted, though between their home-cooked roast beef stock and the huge hunk of mozzarella it contains it's monumentally unhealthy. The buns really are fresh made, too; I've seen the empty industrial-size bags of King Arthur flour in the dumpster on the side. Delivery takes a while but is always done right.

When you walk into the store you will feel as if you have stepped into the 60's or 70's. I've had their Italian sandwich twice, its amazing to say the least. I would recommend this place in a heartbeat. I've also ordered from their delivery.
