Subway

Reviews:
Now I know, writing Yelp reviews for Subway is a little odd. They're all the same...right? I honestly felt like the manager at this particular Subway (inside a Pilot Flying J) was THE nicest fast food employee I have ever met, that this WAS yelp-worthy. I'll be honest. I don't frequent Subways often, particularly due to consuming way too many in my "conserving money" phase (i.e., being a high school/college student). I stopped in this one on the road for work, thinking I'd grab a cheap sub, scarf it and be on my way. There was a line, and the man (only one working) said hello to everyone waiting and told them he'd be with them. He was so friendly and polite. I guess I wanted to document it because it's rare you see anyone so pleasant. After I got my sandwich and sat down, he stopped by everyone's table and asked how everything was and started cleaning. We got to chatting and you could tell he was proud to work for both Subway and Pilot. It was refreshing to meet someone who was happy to be at work in a customer facing environment. Yelp100-#1!

Reviews:
There's a certain nostalgia with going to hogan brothers now that I am well out of college, but what can I say: I love it. It's just a nice satisfying sandwich. The tuna is good and the heated sandwich makes the bread soft and a touch sweet. Avoid the sysco soups and enjoy a sandwich when in Northfield. It's the best food in town beside the co-op, which does actually make living here pretty sad.
Best sandwiches in town, bar none. (Except when they run out of bread, which seems like it happens often). The windows frost up during the winter and on rainy days, which is a nice, though inadvertent, touch.
If only every coffee shop had rootbeer on tap I wouldn't have to dream of HoBros. Hogan Brother's is a simple place: ice cream, soup, sandwiches and music. But, really, what more do you want? A great place to spend a lazy evening.

If you're a fan of cupcakes, this place is pretty close to cupcake heaven. My current favorites are the latte cupcake and the peach cupcake. That said, the bars and other desserts are also terrific. IMO, the best bars are the ones in season, which were rhubarb and are now berry. The lemon bars are excellent year-round. For a special occasion for serious chocolate lovers, don't miss the flourless chocolate cake. It comes in both individual and party sizes. Topped with fresh raspberries, this will make even the pickiest chocoholic swoon. Let it come to room temperature for best flavor and texture. On the off-chance there are leftovers (ha!) store in fridge.
I was in Northfield yesterday and I have a giant sweet tooth and love trying new places so I found myself here after searching on yelp for something decadent. The case was ridiculous and I couldn't decide! I am so indecisive anyways so I asked the girl working for help and she suggested the black velvet cupcake so that's what I got! It was DELISH. Black chocolate cake filled with ganache and topped with a giant cream cheese frosting. Next time I come I will get a peanut butter one because those looked amazing also. The chocolate sea salt caramel was also one of my top contenders. If you are ever in the area, GO HERE!!!
We were visiting family and my wife cannot resist the chance at a Cupcake find . I consider her a cupcake addict. Her tastes differ from mine, but her cupcake savvy is pretty darn good. We walked in and the first thing I told the lady behind the counter was that these cupcakes made Sprinkles ( if you know cupcakes you know Sprinkles) cupcakes look like 2nd place!!! We picked up a six pack of a nice assortment for later that night for desert. Do the words beautiful, moist , decadent , rich, unique, and Damnnnnn mean anything. They were all that and more. Great end to a great meal and they are priced way better than Sprinkles too!!! We'll be back for more. We also picked up a couple Cannoli's and be warned they are not your traditional cannoli. Filled with mascarpone infused with rum. They looked beatiful, but not traditional with ricotta . Don't get me wrong, they told us this and they were very light and tasty, but not your traditional cannoli. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to these and I'll bet you sell more if you change the filling and dip the ends in pistachio dust and a cherry. JMO See you next time we're in town. GREAT CUPCAKES!!! Slammer!!!

Hands down the best pizza sauce and toppings I've ever had on a pizza. The smell when you walk in the door is intoxicating! Yum!!!! We will definitely be making a return visit.
Yum Yum Yum, a thousand times, Yum. Such a better option than the other pizza places in town! I love the sweet family that runs this place, and the pizza is always the BEST. The ingredients are always fresh, they don't take TOO long, and you never regret going! Only downside: the restaurant portion is so tiny and always busy. If you're not doing delivery or take-out, plan on waiting for a table and feeling crowded. BONUS: It's called the Gyro Pizza. Shut up ad order it.
So, the food is good, the portions are generous, and the food prices are reasonable. However, beware if you decide to order a glass of wine! I was shocked to learn that a glass of wine is $8. (There are no prices on the wine card.) Even though the food is good, I will not be returning, because I feel betrayed. $8 for a glass of wine in a family pizza place seems high!

We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance. Charming historic building beautifully restored. Varied menu. Very reasonably priced for beautifully prepared and presented food.
My favorite restaurant in Northfield! I've been here several times for both breakfast and dinner and always had a great experience. When my parents come to visit, we always dine here. It's busier on Friday and Saturday nights, so on the safe side you should call and make a reservation. The service was great; we were seated right away and placed our orders almost right away. I noticed that compared to last year some of the items changed on the menu. I decided to try one of their new dishes which was the salmon special. The salmon was cooked perfectly. The mushrooms and vinaigrette on the side accommodated the salmon well. Lastly, I recommend to always save room for dessert. I had the chocolate lava cake, and it just melted in my mouth.
Very well done! Great menu and beer/wine selection. Cozy atmosphere for any occasion and great staff to provide an enjoyable time. My prosciutto wrapped halibut was a tad dry but very flavorful. A quality visit!

Tandem Bagels

Reviews:
I love coming here especially when I get bored of dinning hall food and want a change up in scenery while I study. The bagels are tasty and quickly prepared! I'm pretty stubborn, so I usually go with the FIT to be TRI'D which is my favorite. However, despite my stubbornness I've tried some other speciality bagels like Bike lox and La Bicci Eggel both were delicious. I also like how there are weekly specials usually comprised of a speciality bagel and a different soap/salad giving you a chance to experiment and try something new. Tandem also has a nice coffee machine, so I recommend trying their cappuccinos. Taste wise I think their coffee is equivalent to Blue Monday. I'm also a huge fan of their energy bombs! If you like peanut butter, you'll probably inhale these. Unfortunately, the past two times I came they were out of them so hopefully third time is the charm.
I am not super knowledgable about bagels, I just know when I like one. Tandem Bagels moved into Northfield about the time I was moving out, so my first taste wasn't until last year, then again this weekend. Both times I had La Bici Eggel, a breakfast sandwich with egg, avocado, cilantro, queso cheese (sounds redundant) and black bean spread. It was that good my first trip that I craved it again. I chose to have mine on a garlic bagel, which was nice and crispy from being toasted on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. I might have been imagining things, but I thought the bagels were smaller than last year. Which isn't such a bad thing, portion sizes in the US are out of control and I certainly don't NEEDS a bagel the size of my head. I like the decor... cool grays and a branch levitating over a community table. Northfield is quaint and a lot of the buildings have that charming, been-around-a-while feel but Tandem Bagels feels a little more modern. There are several good breakfast spots in this college town, and Tandem Bagels was a great choice.
Great place for bagels of any kind, energy bombs are absolute favorite. Full coffee bar . Perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner!!!!

Best salsa around, possibly the best in Minnesota. Lots of cilantro, very fresh. Also food is always fast, hot and fresh. Service is good. I can even find something on the menu for my picky eater, so this restaurant is a family favorite.
A previous reviewer was right on with the salsa description and recommendation. It is thinner than most salsas I like, but the spice level and the generous amount of cilantro in it made it a winner in my book. I was in a hurry and ordered the two taco lunch special as soon as I sat down. Chips and salsa were brought promptly and my meal was right behind. The food was flavorful, not greasy, and well portioned, and reasonably priced.
As I'll try not to mention in *every* review I write, I'm from Texas. Finding Mexican food that isn't deplorable in Minnesota is a challenge. This place accepts that challenge and gives it the college try (get it? Northfield's a college town)! While it's still not quite as authentic as I'm used to, it's great for the midwest. I'm probably giving it 5 stars more out of nostalgia. It likely deserves 4 stars, but I'm so fond of the super fast service, yummy fresh salsa and kind people that I splurged on that 5th star. I like the food, the lunch menu is reasonable, and the birthday party element is great. Who doesn't like wearing a sombrero and having Flan for their 21st birthday? I know I did! Sunday thru Thursday they offer buy one get one for Margaritas!!! They have a punch card for Lunch too, where you have lunch there often enough that eventually one is free. Not a bad deal if you live in town. Bonus: They aren't effing around when they offer a "large" margarita. Seriously. It's like your own personal fish bowl.

Tokyo Grill

1301 Bollenbacher Dr
Northfield, 55057
Reviews:
Tokyo Grill holds a place in my heart as my 'anytime sushi'. I would pick Tokyo Grill over any other sushi place in the south metro, and even some in the cities. The fish is of a good quality, the rice is excellently prepared (a surprising issue for many sushi places), and the veggies are fresh- nothing worse than slimy avocado on your roll! The owner is a wonderful lady and she always seems to remember my fiance and I- even when we haven't been in for months. I love the hibachi and the bento box- the fried rice is divine with a little drizzle of their white shrimp sauce. I don't know what they put in that stuff, but it's addicting and I'm happy to slather it on anything that isn't sushi. Yum.
I was pleasantly surprised to be treated to dinner here by the defensive line coach at Carleton College during my son's recruiting visit to that great institution. I had a salad, miso soup, and the hibachi steak with grilled veggies and fried rice. Everything was very tasty - not like a great sushi / hibachi restaurant in San Francisco, mind you, but better than one might reasonably expect in the frozen countryside of Minnesota. Our waitress was American so there was no language barrier, and very pleasant. The only problem was the temperature of the food - the soup was lukewarm and the entree slightly warmer. On a very cold night, I would have like some steaming hot food to warm me up, and would have rated this little place four stars had that happened.
If you happen to be in Northfield, MN then I suppose this is one of the better places to eat. If you don't happen to be here, then I suppose you don't need to find anywhere in the area to eat. The service was good and the food was good as well. It's a nice restaurant with plenty of booths for seating. If I'm ever back in the area I'll likely stop by again.
