There's a certain nostalgia with going to hogan brothers now that I am well out of college, but what can I say: I love it. It's just a nice satisfying sandwich. The tuna is good and the heated sandwich makes the bread soft and a touch sweet. Avoid the sysco soups and enjoy a sandwich when in Northfield. It's the best food in town beside the co-op, which does actually make living here pretty sad.

Best sandwiches in town, bar none. (Except when they run out of bread, which seems like it happens often). The windows frost up during the winter and on rainy days, which is a nice, though inadvertent, touch.

If only every coffee shop had rootbeer on tap I wouldn't have to dream of HoBros. Hogan Brother's is a simple place: ice cream, soup, sandwiches and music. But, really, what more do you want? A great place to spend a lazy evening.

great. I get the corned beef hogie with extra Swiss. too good

Half a hoogie, cup of chili and beer, that is a great lunch. Been going there for years, just wish it was closer as I often get the craving. A Northfield must. Make a point of stopping by when I am within 100 miles.

No doubt the best sandwich shop I've been to, globally speaking from experience. The kids that work this quaint college town shop have great attitudes and make you an amazing meal. I had the medium turkey with Provolone and the works. Thank you for the flashback.

Went into Northfield to explore. Since it was raining, there wasn't a ton we could really do. So my boyfriend and I decided to try and find some ice cream. Hogans had high recommendations, and appeared to have ice cream! Cute little cafe that sells hoagies, soups and ice cream. I tried the cherry, and it was super good! 1 scoop for only 1.86?! Perfection. But don't let one scoop deceive you, it is a huge scoop. Two scoops is almost falling off the cone. Calm atmosphere, good ice cream, I'd go back.

Northfield really has a lot of okay places to eat and very few great places. Ho Bros (as I lovingly refer to it) is one of the few great. The lunch options are endless, fresh and always delicious. I haven't ordered something that I didn't like here. The interior is perhaps a bit divey but clean and well kept. They also have some delicious ice cream options if you're into that sort of thing. Which you had better be or your probably don't belong in the Midwest :) Try the French silk pie- it's my kids' favorite.

BEER CHEESE SOUP - wooot! We came by after visiting St. Olaf and couldn't have been happier that we stopped in. The hoagies and soups were yummy. Be sure to try the pumpkin chocolate chip muffin - so much deliciousness. It was quick, filling and amazing. You order at the counter and they bring you your food and bus the table for you.

How are their sandwiches so good? You pick your protein choice and everything else comes on the sandwich. I liked this because I was feeling too overwhelmed to pick toppings, so it worked in my favor. I got a basic Turkey sandwich and it came warmed- soft bread, fresh ingredients and some sort of magic oil/sauce. A small 1/3 sub and cup of soup was plenty to fill me up. Lots of seating, ice cream, a couple tap beers. If I'm in town again, I'll totally be back.

Whenever I go to Northfield, I seem to be unable to go anywhere for food other than Hogan Bros. I grew up in Faribault so visited somewhat frequently, and now I love the nostalgia of the place. The sandwiches are big and pretty inexpensive. Go-to is the turkey with everything. The ice cream is pretty great, too!

    (5)
  • Jonathan B.

The acoustics are terrible here but the food is amazing! I highly recommend going here. Just don't expect some good Bob Dylan acoustic s**t to be playing because you won't find that here.

I came here yesterday for dinner and we all left very happy! They have great hoagies, great soups, and awesome ice cream! The full hoagies are pretty big and filling! I tried the beer cheese soup and the cotton candy ice cream- also great! I will be back again when I visit northfield. If you're looking for something delicious, reasonably priced, and pretty fast- this is the place to go!

I'm from Michigan and was visiting extended family throughout Minnesota. My Aunts decided we should eat at Hogan Brothers. We walked in from the back entrance. There are bathrooms available for public use. There are booths and regular tables. It was a clean and nice atmosphere. To order you just walk up to the counter, place your order, pay, you are given a number, and go find a seat! They will bring your food out to you. I ordered the Roast Beef with everything on it and a side of the Beer Cheddar soup. The Sandwich was toasted/warm and I liked that. I'm sure you can request it cold. The Beer Cheddar soup was really good. I was very satisfied with my meal, as was my aunts and mother. Would recommend to anyone!

One of my favorite Northfield spots - always a popular place for St. Olaf alums to frequent on their visits back to campus. Get the 1/2 sandwich and soup combo; my favorite is the tuna with beer cheese soup, perfect for dipping. The ice cream selection is awesome too! I will always make it a point to come for lunch when I get back to town. A+++

  • Julie M.

The sandwiches are good but the long wait is inexcusable. I ordered a sandwich on a Sunday afternoon and then grabbed a booth. My sandwich took over 40 minutes to arrive. And this is essentially a Subway business model. They've got two workers making sandwiches and they're unapologetically slow.

Hogan Bros is one of my favorite Northfield haunts. I mean, it's a Northfield institution. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is friendly. Prices aren't cheap but neither are they unreasonable. The service can trend a little dis-engaged co-ed but they're fast and seating is usually plentiful. Subs can be ordered in three sizes, with delicious soups. The chili, while not particularly spicy, is a great choice in colder weather. If you're deciding between sandwich sizes, go smaller. The servings are quite generous. The on-tap root beer is delicious.

    (4)
  • John B.

Excellent food. Soup, warm sandwiches, and on-tap root beer. Customer service is good, seems like local students may be working there. Sometimes there is live music. When finished eating, enjoy a large selection of ice cream flavors. Atmosphere is good, and is casual. AC is overdone, about 60 degrees at noon on a summer day. No nostalgia so far. 4 Stars because the sandwiches are not quite 5 Star quality.

    (4)
  • Sophia O.

I go here a lot with my family. All sandwiches pretty much are the same, sides are okay. My favorite thing about it is probably the ice cream. The line is usually pretty long when I am there. Place could be a little cleaner as well. Children are usually screaming their heads off in the restaurant, so I usually take my food and run away.

My #1 choice if I'm going to eat out!!! I missed this place the most when I moved out of state...but I moved back and this place was part of my decision when I rated the pros and cons. Its all in the sauce! My best friend, moved to Indian for school, came home and brought 3 friends with her once. She took them to the cities and MOA, they were impressed but not till I brought them to Northfield did the cameras really come out! We ate here and and then went to froggy bottoms for karaoke. It was a great topper to the day.

  • Holly F.

Some of my favorite sandwiches are here! The selection is great - plenty of both vegetarian and meat options. They are nice and warm (perfect for cold Minnesota winters) and the bread is delicious. You can even buy individual day old bread loaves for $1! Soup is great too, and there are different selections each day. Also, don't forget the ice cream - the single scoop is actually probably more like 3 scoops. Try the White Chocolate Raspberry Truffle!

    (5)
  • David S.

I had the roast beef sandwich (whole portion) with tomato basil soup. After seeing the generous size, I realized the half sandwich with soup would have been enough. Later returned for ice cream - same experience. I ordered a double scoop and a single would have been enough. Ice cream and soup and sandwich were very good so I ate it all! They are into locally grown healthy fare and offer good variety. I definitely recommend Hogan Brothers for good inexpensive food!

    Great Lunch Sandwich Shoppe!

  • Jonathan K.

Really good sandwiches, soup, and ice cream in Northfield. I really did like my sandwich, but did not think it was quite 5-star worthy. They pile them up with your choice of meat topped with swiss, provolone, mayo, lettuce, special sauce (really good), tomato, onions, and yellow peppers. I tried the roast beef, which tasted really good, but definitely a bit heavy on the sauce side (probably the special sauce and mayo). I also had a side of Basil Tomato soup, which tasted excellent. It had just the right amount of basil and spices. They loaded up a huge single scoop of Butter Pecan ice cream on a cone, which was really tasty. Most of their ice creams looked delicious. Service was good and the food was cheap (only around $6 for a half sandwich and cup of soup), I'd definitely come back.

I went to college in Menomonie, WI and frequented Acoustic Cafe for the 4 1/2 years that I was there. Now that I'm back in MN I realized there is another Acousitc in Northfield. I was delighted and brought my husband for lunch yesterday. They truly have the best soup and sandwhiches on earth as far as I'm concerned. I was glad to see that nothing has changed in the 10 years since I've been to their other location. LOVE THIS PLACE!

    (5)
  • Taylor O.

I really like this place. Light on the vegetarian options, but great for everything else. The pricing is fair, the food is good, and the service is quality for what it is. The ice cream is the best deal in the whole place, too bad its always so cold in Minnesota.

    (4)
  • Aaron S.

Yes, great sandwiches and nostalgia for those of us who went to college in Northfield. This place hasn't changed much in the 15 years I've known it, and that's a good thing. They do lunch right, and the ice cream is well above average, too. If you're coming through Northfield, this is definitely worth a stop. Be patient, though - at peak times, the line to order your sandwich can mean a 15 minute wait or more.

Love the sandwiches! Tried the corned beef with a cup of chili and was not disappointed. All that for $5.30 makes for a great lunch. Friendly and fast service - there's a play area for the kids as well. Wish we had one in Colorado...

  • Gary K.

Hogan Brothers is the perfect place for a great sandwich and a cold beer. Sure, you can turn up your nose at the rather pedestrian ingredients but the compilation is amazing. The sauce makes the sandwich. Smart food and a relaxed atmosphere make this perfect for this college town!

Good soup (with vegetarian and vegan options), simple, but tasty hoagies, good coffee, beautiful, clean atmosphere. Great prices! A half hoagie and soup with a coffee for 7 bucks?!

    (5)
  • mike k.

Pros: free wifi, reasonable price for what you get ($5.30 for 1/2 hogie and cup of soup which was enough to split with my 5 yo son), rootbeer on tap, chili was good, a kids play area, nicely decorated, and real ice cream. Cons: they microwaved the hogie which meant very hot tomato slices...Not a fan. Also added mayo even though I didn't ask for it. Bottom line: a good value. I'd come back and recommend to friends.

You know, I have no idea if I'd actually like this place now if it weren't for the nostalgia it brings. Well, nostalgia and some amazing on-tap root beer. Their sandwiches are mostly mayo and they heat them in the microwave for you, their soups are really rich and generally always use non-veggie broths, and they're not particularly cheap. But they're cute, they're local, they have art, sometimes music. They're a perfect warm spot in the dead of winter when you drag yourself off a college campus because you can't take the dining hall one more night. And then there's nothing quite like a microwaved saucy hogey and a beer cheese soup. Well, at least not in Northfield. When you're cold. And starving. And your alternative is a dining hall.

A Northfield institution - home of fantastic sandwiches, good soup, great beer, and inviting atmosphere. We have traveled the world and have yet to find as good of sandwich anywhere else. Best to go when they are busy, as we've noticed the sandwiches are prepared better. Meaning go when the line is to the door, it is worth it! If you're a meat-eater and hungry, you can't go wrong with a full combo warm with everything. Add a cup of chili to dip it in, especially on a cold winter day. Also have a great cheese sandwich warm with everything, or hold the mayo and swiss, for vegetarians. Any sandwich goes great with Red Hook, but they got rid of that so go with another beer at a decent price. Draft root beer is good too. Go for live music if you can for an added treat. This spot is worth a trip to Northfield, or if you're already there bring your guests. Seriously the best, we continue to make a point of going everytime we're back in Northfield!

This was the first place I ever ate in Northfield, and I never stopped going there the whole four years I was in that town. They make fantastic sandwiches. My recommendation is a turkey sandwich with everything, heated, of course, with a large root beer (on tap!). They also have art for sale by local artists hanging on the walls. Check it out, there's often some very good stuff.
