My husband and live a block from this place and always see the patio packed and the advertisements of flame broiled burgers was too good to pass up as we yearned to watch the Vikings Game. Despite the cool breeze, we found a table inside (nearly empty) near the TV to enjoy the game and order some drinks and a burger. It took 10 minutes for the bartender to greet us despite being one of three tables in the entire inside. We were excited when the waitress finally came and took our order and we happily requested the Cheese Curds (8.95) to start and then we each wanted the "Famous" Jalapeno and Cream Cheese Stufffed Angus Burger (11.00 each). We waited about 10 minutes for our Cheese Curds which were over friend, mostly empty and low quality bar food and decided to trade them out for the free stale popcorn offered in the back of the bar by the pool tables. We sipped our drinks and watched the game and after another long wait (about 23 minutes total for our burger), the main course arrived. The fries (an extra dollar) reminded me of old Burger King fries and the burgers smelled of the fiery grill. The burgers were a little dry but the flame taste was delicious! We finished our burgers quickly and then waited another 27 minutes to finally flag down a lone waiter passing by to request our check (which he couldn't help with but said he'd find our waitress). She never came... we got up, cleaned our table ourselves, walked around the bar, paced around the front and she actually walked by us as we tried to stop her to put in her 10 top order from out on the patio. We asked if the bartender or someone else could ring us out and everyone seemed dumb-founded. A whole nearly 35 minutes after finishing our food we got our card swiped for $47.89 for just us two (I drank nothing but water and my husband had 2 Pabts beers). The mediocre-expensive food could have been salvaged but the service was horrible. We won't be going back, even though the view is awesome and the location is just down the street.

We wandered in after watching a movie and not wanting to pay a cover at Aster. We've maybe been here in the summer, but suffice it to say winter is a different experience. An unassuming and pretty quiet atmosphere quickly gave way to awesome service and great burgers! We had Tyler and Sarah, and between the two of them they were serving, cooking, cleaning and bartending. Our drinks never sat empty, and our burgers (mushroom/swiss and veggie) were REALLY yummy!! They were appropriately attentive and really sweet. This one is going on our list, we'll especially check out their happy hour! Thanks Sarah and Tyler!!

Not good. Cool location but that was about it. Got one of their signature burgers stuffed with cheddar and bacon ... asked to be cooked medium. It was so over cooked it was crispy. Because it was stuffed the beef on the bottom and top of the "stuffed" portion was paper thin and so over cooked it was literally crispy. My son got the "smoked" pulled pork sandwich and because I love BBQ I snagged a bite. Doubt it was smoked. Tasted A LOT like the Lloyd's brand you get in a tub from Target. Wife got a turkey burger. And she said it was just okay. Server was nice but they were slow. Not entirely her fault ... there was a party of 20+ behind us. Asked for a side of ranch after appetizer was ordered and never got it.

There should be an option for a half star or no star at all! The patio was seat yourself so we did. At least 10 minutes goes by without any acknowledgement from the only two servers working an almost full patio. Our server runs by and says he'll be with us shortly. By this point I have to go inside and grab menus myself. Another 10 or so minutes later our simple order is written down and repeated back. Although he didn't repeat back that I wanted my burger cooked medium rare or with cheddar cheese, so I had to say it again. About 30 minutes in and still no drinks. When the drinks finally arrive, the water I ordered with them was missing. Approximately 40 minutes in our food arrives. Both orders are incorrect. Instead of medium rare, my burger was beyond well done with bacon on it which I didnt order. My friend ordered a turkey burger and got a deli-style turkey sandwich. The food was cold, the burger was almost inedible do to it's chewy/charred consistency, and the fries were less than mediocre... they tasted like they had old/expired seasoned salt on them. The salt shaker I requested was also something I had to go inside and get myself (which was almost empty). Our server lacked any personality, enthusiasm, or apologetic qualities. $20 for the worst burger I've ever had and a coke is ludacris. I'm a server and I work hard for my money as do other patrons. People who dine out are relaxing and shouldn't have to lift a finger. Clearly mismanaged and understaffed. Certainly hire a new chef and cooks, and hire some servers that listen. I would never go back unless only to have a beer on the patio because of the view of downtown. GET IT TOGETHER!

LOVE this place in the summer! I'd have to agree with Tim A that it's probably best in the summer, and since that's the only time I've ever been here, that's what I'm basing my review on. Awesome patio with lots of room, gorgeous views of the city and the park along St. Anthony Main. Pretty good happy hour, although I got there too early last time and couldn't partake (I've never been EARLY to happy hour before). Good beer selection, perfect service, good food (the turkey burger and swiss was really tasty) and overall good vibe. However, I have been there later in the evening on a weekend during summer and it was pretty packed. Like, hard to move, definitely no free tables anywhere packed. I still enjoyed myself, but it seems like a better sort of place when you can sit outside and relax. NOTE: Apparently they have a lot or a ramp where they validate your parking as long as you spend $5 (which isn't too hard to do). We didn't know and parked at a meter, but it might be good to know if you go there later at night. Hurrah, its summer!

I love the patio here! I'll suffer through anything else just for the patio. The people watching is incredible and nothing beats a beer rocket on a hot summer day. I've enjoyed a lot of good times here hence the extra star. It can get crowded and annoying if you're here later in the evening as people who've had one too many rockets come out to play. The food isn't really memorable but it's good enough when it comes to the bar standards.

So if you're going to Tuggs for a good burger...I might look elsewhere. If you're going to Tuggs to sit out on the patio, DO IT. I happened to be in Minneapolis on a rainy day so the patio wasn't really happening but I can only imagine what it looks like on a nice day. I ordered a stuffed burger because when I looked up "things to do in Minneapolis" it said "Go to Tuggs Tavern and enjoy a stuffed burger"...so I did. I picked the TuggBurger because I thought the one with the name of the restaurant in it would be the best one. There were 5 or 6 to choose from but a lot of them had bacon on them and I don't really do the whole bacon thing. Mine was stuffed with onions, jalepenos and cream cheese. The meat was overcooked and I realized later they didn't ask how I wanted it done. It was also pretty bland. This being my first time in Minneapolis, maybe things are more expensive here but I was surprised that all the burgers were over $10. With water to drink and tip included the whole meal cost me $15 which seems a little steep for a sub-par burger. I will say though that the waiter was incredibly friendly and did his best helping me try to figure out what to do in Minneapolis on a rainy day. If I could rate the service alone, I would have given the place a 5. But the burger wasn't that great.

Pluses are: Free popcorn, outdoor patio, solid bar food. I wish they had more diversity on their tap beers, plus I thought a little pricey for a Friday afternoon. The towers of beer are fun to share with a group. Tugg's is showing some signs of age but is still a good standby in the St Anthony Main area. Shawn's Tip: get there early for the St Anthony Main music series and enjoy a great seat to the free music!

Wow just left Tuggs. Bunch of amateurs. We cleared our own table and waited for a server to come out to serve us outside . We waited 15 minutes and then she dropped off menus and left. We waited 5 more minutres and I almost lost my mind.. Second time I have left because of - not poor service, NO SERVICE. Never going back.

  • Rachel E.

Let's be real, Tuggs is great for one thing: its patio. They have average bar food and a standard beer selection, but one killer property along the river in Saint Anthony Main. That is the only reason I keep going back to Tuggs. Nothing beats having some beers outside on a sunny, summer day. If you go with a group, or even with one other person, you should get their rocket - it's more fun! Sharing is caring and sunshine is medicinal so grab some friends or coworkers and unwind.

The incredible stuffed burger is similar to Matt's. There are several varieties. It is very HOT, so a person must be patient to avoid serious injury to their mouth. And you will be stuffed. The strawberry lemonade is divine, but expensive. Worth it if you are a lemonade connoisseur. I mostly go in the summer and sit on the patio overlooking the river and the skyline. It is a truly beautiful perspective. A fun meeting spot if you can handle the college-age crowd downing rockets of beer. If you get your fill of drunkenness, you can mosey on down to one of the other bars/restaurants on the street. Learn a little about the history of the area to get the full effect of the significance of Main Street Minneapolis. The people watching is excellent because there is a good mix of surrounding restaurants and wedding parties often come by to take advantage of the beautiful surroundings. Parking can be a bit of an issue, so it is best if you can walk or ride your bike. CAUTION: The cobblestone streets are great, especially original cobblestone, but very dangerous with heels.

This is a GREAT summer place. Right on the Mississippi. EXCELLENT view of the city. Tasty burgers. Serious burgers. Not wimpy skinny ones. You can buy the beer rockets that sit on your table and you dispense the beer. Lots of patio seating and live music Thursday- Saturday. Validated parking (free). You can also ride your scooter or bike and park right by the patio.

  • Stephanie K.

Amazing patio, free music on the weekends, THE BEST strawberry lemonade EVER and that's about where the pluses end. The strawberry lemonade is to die for but at $5.25, I can't have it as often as I'd like. It really is the best I've ever had though and they really take care in preparing it. The food is ok but expensive due to the location and probably the fact that it's still generally less expensive than their neighbors. The food is very average and isn't very inspired but just typical, greasy bar food.

I beg you, go somewhere else. This place could be perfect; beautiful patio great for nice weather, casual bar food while on a bike ride along the river, etc. However, they are definitely in the "let's-rip-off-people-while-we-can" mode of business. Let's be serious; $8.25 for a basket of chips and pico de gallo? Over $10 for a burger? $7.75 for a hot dog? And the food wasn't even that good. La Belle Vie might get away with charging that much for a foie-gras hot dog, but not Tuggs. When we asked the manager to dispute a charge (there was discrepancy on the prices on the web site versus what was charged to our credit card - never got an itemized bill) - we got an answer something like "tourists come here and they like the view so we charge what we can charge". Do yourself a favor and walk up the hill to Mac's Industrial - more beer, great food, and no attitude.

I came here with the boyfriend to kill some time before a movie at St Anthony Main theater last night. Luckily it was warm out, so we took advantage of the patio. I can't comment on the food because we only had drinks, but it was definitely nothing special. Seven of Tugg's nine custom cocktails involve lemonade, not much for variety here! They also seemed overpriced- I went with a rail drink instead. I don't need to go back here anytime soon, when there are better places just down the street.

Great area, fine bar. Awesome view from the patio and a fooseball table in the back. Overall, nothing special, but a pretty good place to get a drink with friends.

Not bad, but not great. Happy hour specials were decent and we just happened to be in the area before heading to a Twins game. Not really my kind of place, but it served the purpose.

    (2)
  • Kelsey P.

This place has got a fun atmosphere and a nice patio coupled with some reasonable prices. There is ample parking nearby (which might get more complicated if you try to go during a Twins game). The patio overlooks the river (the tavern is right on St. Anthony Main) AND they provide Legos to play with! We were on a pedal pub so we arrived with a pretty indecisive group. The bartender tolerated it well. I say tolerated because he was obviously a little pissed off that we existed, but it was only noticeable to those of us who were sober. We bought a whatever-the-eight-pint-thing-was-called of a pineapple cider and the whole group said it was delicious! Great for something new but not too daring.

Tuggs seems to get a bad rap but has some good stuff going for it. First and foremost... The patio. It's pretty great. Adjacent to the river, great people watching, view of the skyline. Good stuff. Free popcorn. Duh. They have what I call the 'strip or go naked", I don't remember what they call it. Beer, vodka & lemonade. One of the best summer drinks that exists. Drinks are a little on the slightly too small and/or slightly too expensive side - but this real estate ain't cheap. I've never been here on a Fri or Sat night and I'd imagine things may be different there, but I've always had good service and a good time.

  • Elyse M.

I'm not sure how unobservant a bartender and server can be that neither one notices lipstick marks and red wine spots on a glass of white wine before it reaches the table, but that definitely happened. Overpriced and mediocre food. I guess you're paying for the atmosphere, but there really isn't much of one indoors on a late fall evening. Inattentive doesn't even begin to describe the service, and it wasn't a busy night. Go anywhere but here. It's awful. I'd rather eat dog biscuits at the dog wash next door.

If any owners or management sees this, please please have your servers treat the costumers better. With only 2.5 stars out of 5! I think listening to a few yelp reviews might do some good. Before it was even 10 pm, we were asked twice if we wanted our tab. I asked when they closed and our server said, "kitchen closes at ten, so (she shrugs) whenever." Then she gave us our tab. Which we didn't ask for. Very soon after she came up and told us it was last call and asked us if we wanted anything else ( but we were already given our tabs) We were not welcome here, the Tuggs employees tonight wanted us to leave. Chairs were already flipped when I ordered my second beer before 10pm. I understand if business is slow you want to close. But if people are inside ordering, as a business, why turn away business. There were two other groups inside, maybe more outside. I'm currently serving in Minneapolis, so I have an idea how things work at most places. Tonights service was begging me tip 10% I hate doing that to another server, but this girl didn't even try to make us feel welcome. She deserved no tip. She also hovered after she ran our cards, watching us sign. Go here blind drunk and you won't care one bit. We were pushed out of there, and having asked when they closed, not given a straight answer, it felt pretty awkward to be giving this place my money. Go here sober and it'll be disappointing at best

It's a good thing I'm on vacation. If I lived in the area, I would not be back. The service was terrible. We were ignored from the second we walked in the door. We had to get our own menus and ask for a server. Other tables had to ask for service too. The only speedy part of the service was when we asked for our check. Glad I won't be back. Also, we ordered wings and they didn't have wet wipes for when were were done. Seriously? And it was way overpriced for the quality/type of food. I wish I could give this place 0 stars. It doesn't even deserve the 1 star.

My girlfriends were in town for the first time so I was giving the nickle tour of the Cities. After we walked across the Stone Arch bridge, we were thirsty! They liked the looks of the patio at Tuggs Tavern and wanted to stop here. There were a handful of customers at other tables around, so they weren't busy. Our service was just okay. The patio across from Tuggs seemed to have better service and we all commented that maybe that is where we should have stopped instead. We ordered drinks and an app... nothing too fancy. It shouldn't have been as difficult as it seemed.

  • Jeb B.

I rarely notice bad service. This was terrible. Despite being one of only two groups inside the place, we couldn't get any attention. Those seated outside seemed to be better served. We hopped into Tuggs for lunch because it was conveniently located on picturesque Main Street, Minneapolis's oldest street. The premium prices for the location did not match the quality of the food. I could practically taste the freezer burn on the recently reheated fried food. I'm sure the beer was cold. So, if you're looking for that, I guess this place will do. Two stars for the location. No stars for the service or food.

    (2)
  • Steve T.

If it was only slow it would have been better! How they can be so understaffed and unprepared doesn't make any sense! Can't live on view only people!

I went to Tuggs with a friend for her birthday. I ordered a burger (it had hashbrowns on it- I forget what it was called) and it was outstanding- and well priced for the quality. The patio seating offered a view of the river and downtown and, of course, historic St. Anthony Main. I'm kind of a burger fanatic- and will definitely be coming here again. The only reason that I didn't give five stars was because our server barely paid any attention to us after we got our food. At least we got it though!

Tuggs has a nice patio but that's about it. Came here on a rather chilly weekday in August. Fortunately, it wasn't busy at all so getting a table wasn't difficult. Our server was pleasant but she just wasn't a good server. She had no idea what beer was on tap, or any idea of pretty basic liquors. And after ordering a few drinks, she still had to be reminded multiple times of what we were drinking (and trust me, it wasn't too complicated). As far as the food goes, their menu is simple and small. I opted for chicken fingers. My friends and I discussed how it's pretty difficult to mess up chicken fingers. Unfortunately, they were messed up. They were dry, chewy, and not fresh at all. Some of the burgers did look good. And the honey mustard they had was good. I'll also note that none of the menu items were cheap either. My chicken fingers were about $11. Beer selection was limited too. If I could turn back time, I'd pick one of the other restaurants right next door with a similar great patios.

Worst service ever. Don't go there on a nice day if you expect service to even get a drink!

Great location right on the riverfront with a view of downtown Minneapolis. The Shock Top on tap was one of the few highlights of the meal. I ordered a burger with a hash browns and bacon, but it didn't have nearly the flavorful pop that you would have expected. The crispy hash browns added some texture to each bite, but that's as good as it got. Service was adequate. The weather was great with temps in the 70's. Nice breeze and dj music from the bar next door was good. The last night of a work trip it was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this place. After a long walk up and down Nicolett Mall was good to kick up my feet and relax.

Great patio, mediocre food, terribly slow service. It's a nice place to have a few beers on a warm summer day but not a great spot for dinner. I love the views of the river and it's good people watching. But the service is always painfully slow. It just took us 90 minutes for lunch.

There are four restaurants on Saint Anthony Main along the Mississippi river, but Tugg's definitely has the most reasonable prices. Even without reservations (they don't take them) on a Tuesday night, we had an easy time getting a spot for six of us on the patio overlooking the Mississippi River and the Minneapolis skyline. They have daily specials, and the Tuesday special was a Tuggburger - it's a half-pound fresh lean ground beef stuffed with sauteed jalapenos, sweet onion and cream cheese. So good! We also had cheese curds for an appetizer - it was like being at the State Fair! This is a great way to enjoy the atmosphere and views on St. Anthony Main without spending too much money.

Our team at work went for a going away lunch for one of the coolest guys I have ever met. Everyone went for the stuffed Tuggburger except me, I went for the pork sandwich because I have had the Tuggburger before, which is fantastic. The pork sandwich was pretty good, but nothing special. Lots of pork but the sauce was a little mild. We sat on the porch on a perfect day, the river and people watching was awesome. Our service was very good as well. It was an awesome day to have lunch with friends!

Burgers and lemonade. That's pretty much it. If you don't eat meat there is one veggie burger. It tastes like nothing, one of those frozen garden burgers... but for some reason it's $10.25, the same price as all of the other burgers. So then I asked for toppings like sauteed mushrooms that were listed as toppings on the other burgers, assuming they must be in the kitchen somewhere. The waitress said that the burger patties are stuffed with the toppings ahead of time so it wasn't possible to put them on the veggie burger. Which, to me, is an OK answer if I'm at a burger place where everything is roughly $4. But for $10.25 a burger, I would expect some fresh ingredients in the refrigerator. Also, the strawberry lemonade is way too sweet but what did I expect. Nice view though.

We went to Tuggs on a very slow Friday night and had a terrible experience. The service was a joke and the food sucked. Please save yourself the time and money and don't go to this dump.

Service iffy - "if you want food it will take 1/2 hour". That is a quote from the waiter. Shock Top beer - not a big selection on tap and at $5.50 a pop it is a bit expensive. Saloon burger - stuffed with bacon and cheddar cheese. Fries (crinkle cut). Food prices were not too bad. Decent enough bar food. Sitting out on the deck with the river, the city in the background and the people watching is the real draw.

What puts Tuggs over the top is their FABULOUS patio. It overlooks the river in St. Anthony Main, and even though their drinks are a little pricey and the service is slow, you'll at least have a great view while you chill. Plus, I love their giant beer dispensers that they bring to your table! King of small inside, but it's a great dinner spot or place to hang out with a group. AND you can walk to the bars in Northeast, if you so choose. Not that I do that, or anything.

Stopped in last night with a friend for a quick bite to eat. We each got the burger special and french fries. Burgers were high quality, juicy and had a great bun (a must on any good burger) Price was right at around 8 dollars per person. Had the burger NOT been on special it would have been over 10 dollars just for the burger-would not pay that price ! (all around looking through the menu the prices were on the high side)

Ahhhh Tuggs. I've been wanting to come here for a long time because of your great patio on the Main as are many others. My parents were in town for the weekend so I thought it was a perfect opportunity to come, sit and enjoy the weather on one of the best streets in the city. Nothing horrible happened, our server was really nice and attentive and even gave us the opportunity to transfer our tab when her shift was done. We all ordered really expensive (really expensive being more than $5 in my eyes.. but basically everything there is $5+) drinks. They were tasty, and alcoholic, so props to the bartender for that, but my strawberry lemonade + rum had a tablespoon of sugar coating the bottom. Every time I sucked my straw I got a mouthful of sugar. I could do without. We decided to only stay for one, because when you are paying for 4 people it gets expensive fast. However, I'm glad that I went and experienced it for myself. I probably wouldn't come back unless I was with a group and we were stopping for a bar crawl, but I would recommend it to people looking for somewhere with a really nice view.

The setting is AWESOME. Beers, bad bar food, and good service. It's a great place to hang out with friends. You need to have a few beers before you could possibly eat the food - but hey, I think that's kind of the point.

When I come back to MN and it's not winter, I go to Tuggs. Why? Because I love their patio. The patio is great for meeting friends, having a beer and a burger, and then heading out.
