The Coffee Shop NE is the hub of the Audubon Neighborhood in NE Minneapolis. They have fantastic coffee, great pastries, and THE MOST DECADENT SLICE OF CHOCOLATE CAKE on this planet. Go for the coffee, and at some point, you must try this chocolate cake if you like chocolate. If you don't like chocolate then your really not human...you're probably an alien. Check yo self!

I don't need coffee often (caffeine gives me the jitters), but The Coffee Shop NE has a million other reasons for me to stop in. First of all, I like to stop in Rewind every now and then to check up on the selection and now I have a place right there to grab some treats, since Sarah Jane Bakery isn't open every time I want a cooke! The Coffee Shop NE has some yummy looking baked goods. I got an M&M cookie as big as my hand. The best part is that since it was evening, the cookies were buy one get one free! They get fresh goods in the morning and so treats get cheap when it is later in the day. So I got TWO cookies as big as my hand! If you don't want dessert. Snoop out their daily special. I've seen pictures of a few now and each one looks better than the last. Think fresh, delicious, and healthy. I wouldn't mind grabbing a bite here...

Get the chicken salad sandwich. You won't regret it! The Coffee Shop NE recently expanded, so they have more seating now. Its my favorite place for a quick lunch. It has new art feature a local artist every month. Friendly staff, great coffee and tea, and excellent food. Its my favorite coffee shop in Northeast MPLS.

Coffee was good. Service was great. Bread was great. Free WiFi. Only issue was it was noisy which made any sort of conversation work...

I've been jonesing for some coffee lately (me=not a regular coffee drinker) and I live so close to this shop that I suddenly had an epiphany moment. "You can get what you need at The Coffee shop NE without going to Starbucksssssssssssss"... wow, it only took 8 months, but cool. I went in and looked at the menu. The cashier was super friendly, and offered any help. I asked what the Dirty Chai was and what was good for a hang over. She had answers for both that were quick and needed. We both had a chuckle over the hang over and agreed that it wasn't meant for me. I decided on the iced dirty chai (small) and the cold drip with maple and honey (small). For $8.50 I got two very large smalls in a quick and friendly manner. My dirty chai was like heaven. Like i said, I'm not a barista, coffee drinker, need this every day of my life; I'm a appreciator? of the craft. I couldn't stop suckin my chai down. Too good. The cold drip was supposed to be "magical", according to coffee shop hangover extraordinaire , however it wasn't quite my style. I expected coffee flavor with an undertone of maple and honey, but the two latter flavors were hard to detect. I still give this shop 5 stars because 1. uber close to my house 2. super friendly cashier makes me want to come back 3. my dirty chai was dreamy. Next time I'm making it my prerogative to try a sandwich/egg/salad.

Cute, clean, colorful, and coffee. Those are the 4 C's. At least they are the 4 C's at the Coffee Shop in NE Mpls. The service is friendly and the medium roast I had was nice and vibrant. This place is now on my personal coffee map. This is really a coffee shop/small deli. They feature a breakfast sandwich called an "eggel". The ones I saw going out looked delicious. I will have to return for one of those.

I liked this place and plan to go back soon so I can actually try the coffee. I was only here for ten minutes, but the sandwich I had was pretty good. I really wish someone would or could open a Bar/grill near hear up on Johnson for us aged folks.

This place is great. It has a very townie feel to it. Like it exists in a parallel universe where Starbucks doesn't exist. Like someone took a coffee shop from the 70s then added a modern variety of coffee beverages. The best part of this place is the colorful clientele who often saunter in and out looking like they just got out of bed, and are the friendliest folks you'll ever meet. Oh yeah, I had the Killer Chai. It was pretty killer. That's a Chai with Almond and Chocolate. Yummy. They also get baked goods from Patisserie Margo, so the cookies are pretty tasty.

It's the good people who run this place that makes it so special. They are kind, polite, caring, happy looking, and make such great tasting food and coffees. Very clean, comfortable setting. I like that have two sitting areas, the one in the front near the coffee and food preparation and cashier is very pleasant and a bit more active as people wait patiently in line for what they know will be good food and service. Good people watching here, and stuff to look at on the info board and merchandise shelves. Then in the back, the space is three times as large with two top tables, and one very large conference table with some pleather sofas and chairs breaking up the table seating. I liked the tone and liberal atmosphere. I just think educated liberals are so much nicer than uptight conservative greedy types. I also love both of the bathroom's wall art...One of darling cats...and the other of an interesting Diva type woman giving face watching your bathroom activities. I see they advertise an "Open Mic" on Sundays... I'm guessing Kareokee! Count me in!!

Forgot to mention there's a free parking lot adjacent to the building for those who plan on hanging out longer than 90min. Huge perk!

I've been poking around my new-ish neighborhood, trying to find "my" coffee shop and I think The Coffee Shop NE might be it. The decor is cute and cheery, with rotating local artists on a frequent basis donning the walls and mustache decals on the bathroom mirror. It can get a little crowded on the weekends but not to worry, there are OUTLETS EVERYWHERE! How other coffee places don't understand why this simple thing can make or break my afternoon coffee session is beyond my understanding. It's such a huge and unexpected plus, I'd go there for their abundant electricity alone. Parking is easy, 90 minute street parking or a free lot right next to the building. Some of the nicest and friendliest baristas I've come across, they are definitely a community based shop and it shows in the friendly interactions between the obvious regulars and the staff. I'm looking forward to becoming one of them.

Solid little coffeehouse on a fun little stretch of road in NE. Wife and I stopped for an afternoon "pick me up" and were served the largest "medium" cafe mocha (served in an oversized pint glass!) and slice of double chocolate cake ever. Nice ladies running the store and a very chill place to just hang for awhile and watch the world go by. Not really a "hip" place, but serviceable for both the college student and the soccer mom alike.

Nice little shop, on a nice little corner in NE. Good coffee, nice art on the walls.

I love this place. I'm a coffee shop fiend and especially a fan of iced caramel lattes. I was very pleased when I had my first latte from The Coffee Shop NE-- it was very tasty! Since then, I've been going back regularly. The staff is all very nice and welcoming, they learn your drink and your name, and make you feel at home. The Shop also seems to encourage a great sense of community among regulars. The decor is great-- very homey. They've done a great job with the space they have-- it's a little shop, but they put in a lot of places to sit without making it seem crowded. Very impressive. Also, the bathroom-- you must pop into the bathroom. Finally, they make great fresh sandwiches and always have a good variety of prepackaged food available, including a delicious curry tuna. At one point they were making cake pops, too, which were also very tasty.

After 3 attempts to find a 1)soy latte and 2)something to satisfy my need for sweet, 3)paid for with a card, 4)in northeast with no success, I ended up here. I'm so glad I did. I don't think my list if demands is all that ridiculous. But apparently in NE minneapolis, I'm considered picky. When I walked in I was warmly greeted by two women and quickly taken care of. My latte was delicious with very nice foam and I wasn't hassled about my temperature request. I also ordered the apple pie (unexpected option) which was also quite good. The atmosphere is nice, clean and open with some interesting art on the walls. I chose to sit outside at the sidewalk patio. Also, if apple pie isn't your thing, Sarah Jane's bakery is right across the street. It's a good thing they were closed when I stopped by. But I'll be back again for coffee and maybe a donut...or three.

Their sandwiches, they are awesome. Just a penny for your thoughts if you need lunch options in NE.

Neither my husband nor I are coffee drinkers so it took us awhile to check out The Coffee Shop NE but we were in the neighborhood so we stopped by for an iced chai, and left with a trio of PBJ sandwiches and plans to come back for breakfast (we happened to see a famous Eggel sandwich pass by and my dear husband was quite enticed). The atmosphere is casual and home-grown without that chain feeling. You can get a glimpse of real personality in the paintings on the walls (they just had a mini art show there last night) and the fore-mentioned bathroom. How cool is it that they are hosting local painters (and bands) too! The chai was perfect, what I got of it (my 2 kids sucked it down before I had much of a chance) and those simple PBJs were really good (mine are never that good. . . I think I need more practice). But like I said before, we're going back in the morning. That has got to be worth 5 stars for a family that doesn't like coffee.

Why did the turkey cross the road? Because its taken over the damned neighborhood. Actually 2 thirty plus pound turkeys brought traffic to a halt on this block. I'm about to dial 911, when someone told me they are part of the hood. Good thing I never made the call or I would have been taken to Hennepin's Psychiatric facility. The coffee shop caught my eye. I got a very tasty, perfect temp hot chocolate. It even wouldn't be that strange to sit and look out the window for hours. They have quite an extensive menu, enough to be considered a cafe. The food seems well prepared. In a strange irony the sandwich was a reuben. I already had mine for the week at Hazel's. Another time. Strangely enough, they get none of their baked goods at Sarah Jane's Bakery across the street. They do look good and the chocolate one looks like something from Cafe Latte. However if you use the bathroom first, you may pass on ALL the desserts.

I stopped in for my first visit with a friend. What a great little place! Great clean space that makes the most of every inch. My dark chocolate mocha was lovely. But the cheese plate won my heart. For only $7, we got a plate with Brie, goat cheese with honey, gouda, and dill havarti. There were some light little crackers and some fresh grapes. The two of us split the plate for lunch and we were full. If we hadn't been full, I would have been so tempted to try their curried tuna sandwich. There is even off street parking just a few doors down. They have sensibly placed a number of outlets along the walls. I'll be returning here often!

  • Keith M.

Great espresso & macchiato; they even have buttery, fluffy chocolate filled croissants. The interior is one note (all green), but still comfy and the wi-fi connection is also nice and there are outlets aplenty. They're even open til 9PM, which I found out is an exception, not the rule over here in Mpls vs Cbus ,which I'm still trying to get a handle on. Reminds me of how Johnson St is rather similar to Como Ave with just over a block or two of quality businesses: both are worth checking out.

Happy discovery: they have pastry happy hour! Twofers on the cookies! YUM.

The remodel has made the Coffee Shop even nicer, a great place altogether.....a place for quieter conversations, reading, computer work and it's out of the draft of the opening door. The whole place is cozy and welcoming. Good coffee and tea. Would like more snacks that aren't sweet. The ambience is great, as it has always been....so friendly and relaxed.

The Coffee Shop is another example of why this is the best neighborhood in Minneapolis. Great coffee, cute interior, and always-friendly service. In the words of Dan Cortese, "I love this place!!!"

  • Jonathon A.

I never much cared for this place when it was Audubon Coffee, but since the new owners took over, I LOVE this place. The staff is so friendly, and the coffee is fantastic. Their sandwich specials are just that, special. Everything I've ever had here has been tasty, fresh, and cheap too! They have plenty of options for kids, mine gets excited to come in for fruit and juice boxes. I am a bit sad that they got rid of the kids' coloring table though. Keep up the great work!

If an award existed for most adorable coffee shop in the Twin Cities, I would think that The Coffee Shop NE would definitely be in the running. The first time I ever visited, I saw a group of elementary school kids dash inside to order small boxes of apple juice. (I think they needed something to complement the grip of cookies they got from A Baker's Wife across the street...) When it was a kid's turn to order and pay, each one would rise up on his or her tippy-toes and say "Can I pwease haaaavveee someeee juiceeeee ma'ammmm?" and then shakily hand the barista a sweaty and hand-crumpled dollar bill. Students studying for their exams, elderly folks working on their daily crossword, and other patrons all collectively smiled at their ridiculous innocence. I did too, but then thought to myself, "Where are the parents?" Haha. This neighborhood gem is open to everybody and apparently those kids are regulars! #awwww Aside from this shop's cuteness, it's also deceivingly spacious since it looks so small from the street front. It's large enough where there's plenty of seating and tables to accommodate groups of all sizes. The times I've been there to do work, I've just grabbed a refreshing lemonade or strong coffee. Both are solid. Also, I've snacked on a plain bagel with veggie cream cheese. Yum! I think it's slightly more affordable than other coffee shops, and I don't think I've ever paid over $10 for a snack and drink. If you plan on camping out for several hours, the music won't make your ears bleed and those that love Dashboard Confessional-like music will feel right at home. LOL! (I am not a fan, BTW. A bit too emotional for me.) When you feel like ignoring your work, you can always examine the unique and vibrant local art hanging on the walls. It's a quaint place to grab a nice drink and snack to get some work done. I'll return soon!

The ready made salads (made in house) in the fridge case were the freshest and most appetizing salads I've ever seen anywhere (they put the salads at Whole Foods fridge case to shame!). I regret not buying one. I ate at Hazel's across the street (not knowing they had food here too. I used to go here often when it was the Audobon Coffee Shop - but I no longer live in the neighborhood. Anyway - WOW! This place went from looking like a dive to a really nice space. I also don't remember all the seating/extra room in the back. Oh, I did get a Soy vanilla Latte to go and it was REALLY good and I am a total coffee snob that likes 3rd wave places. I am def coming back here to try the food. Also the next time I'm craving a salad - I know where I'm going!!

Mediocre food and subpar coffee. really don't get what all the fuss is about . I've been here quite a few times and never been impressed.

This is nice little NE gem of a coffee shop. It's busy but you want your coffee shop to be busy. Staff are super cool and friendly.

  • Grace D.

I'm very confused about other people's reviews. The coffee is good for the price, but the food is horrible. I am currently sitting at my table and writing this review. I ordered a toasted bagel with butter, and the bagel came toasted after 10 minutes of waiting with butter on the side. I think it was frozen. The quiche my friend ordered was soggy. The turkey and Brie sandwich came with 2 slices of turkey, a chunk of Brie thrown in there and a pound of lettuce. The nachos came with guacamole in a container. Save yourself the trouble and never come here. The dude at Hazels who recommended it was wrong. Very wrong indeed.

This place is a local treasure. Do yourself a favor skip Starbucks and Caribou eat local. This place has great coffee and food. I have gotten coffee and eaten lunch here many times. There coffee is top notch. The food is also top notch and home made from scratch. I have had some of the best soup and sandwiches here. I promise you will enjoy your visit. The atmosphere is also great. The staff is friendly and helpful. It is a extremely pleasant place to have meetings, study, read or just relax.

    (5)
  • Ahmad R.

The atmosphere is nice but the espresso is not the best. So it's a great place to hang if you aren't particular about quality of the pull. The front is more 'shop' cozy and the back is more 'lounge' cozy.

  • Susan H.

Love this place, it's a neighborhood favorite. The food is fantastic, especially the quiche options, and they make a great cubano. More than the coffee and food, though, I love the ambiance. New local art is hung up on a regular basis, the staff is always friendly, and if you're a regular they tend to know it. They also host a number of local groups, and hold an open mic night on Sundays. Parking is abundant in the free lot next door. Wifi is free.

  • Cassandra W.

Love this place! Coffee is fabulous, and the food is super tasty. My daughter loves the quiche and greens (she's three), and I'm a high fan of both the chicken salad and the veg-wich. The workers and customers are all wonderful! It's our go to place!

  • Sheila H.

Neighborhood coffee shop with the best drinks, treats, tasty salads and sandwiches, bagels, etc... Great atmosphere. Don't go here if you're a drive thru type of person. It takes time to make coffee and snacks to order, but it's worth a wait. Nice people!

The first time I walked in the door, it smelled like wet dog, so I turned around and walked out. I'm glad I gave the place a second chance because they have real coffee and the pecan bars are amazingly delicious. There is a wonderful local feel at this place. Sometimes, "local feel" turns out to mean "not friendly and half-assed," but not so here. The staff have all been quick to help each time I was there. Parking is easy to find, and the back room has plenty of seating. It's not gourmet or hipster, but it's a nice hangout with quality products. Note: If you don't carry cash, be prepared to spend at least $4 on your card.

Food/Drink: I've been out here twice recently, tried the coffee black and the miel (or their version of it). Both were OK and I've had better unfortunately. The flip side of the coin is that the place has a huge menu so there's got to be something on it that might be good. Might be worth trying something else. Where they do get it right is the food options, salads, cookies, cakes and bars oh my... Yes, please to the sugar rush Ambiance: Pzacked, loud and somewhat maintains a neighborly/local feel. There's a front room which has a few tables and can get crowded. But don't fret, there's a back room with a few couches and large table if needed. When I got here on the weekend, most of the tables were occupied with families which really didn't fit me working heads down with my laptop. Service: Cheery and enough people behind the counter to make sure you're moving quickly to where you need to go with your order. There are a lot rooms labeled "employees only", almost one per employee on shift. Overall: If I'm in the area and need to grab a coffee, I'll drop by here. It's tough to knock it too hard as the food options and service more then make up for a coffee menu and quality that needs some work. Just be aware you're better off bringing your family (kids and all) then planning on getting some work done.

Good coffee and drinks, great sandwiches and pastries. It can get busy in the morning on weekends but it's a good stop.

Do you agree that the "coffee shop" part of The Coffee Shop NE's name is to some extent misleading -- in a good way? You could find items on their menu that you don't usually expect to see on a coffee shop's menu. It's still a coffee shop, of course. But it is a coffee shop where you could "build your own sandwich." I like coffee shops whose non-beverage menus are diverse and this business is an exemplar of such coffee shops. It's what I like the most about here. What I don't like is that it is more noisy than most coffee shops. This place is not very big (they are expanding the seating area, though) and the amount of noise especially when it's crowded is a little high for a place of this size which makes it a not-very-suitable place for studying/working. It's unfortunate! Because in addition to ample parking, there are literally tens of electrical outlets (the highest per-capita outlets in the Twin Cities, I believe!) that could have made it an ideal place for studying/working. The diverse menu and more-than-enough outlets and parking spots aside, the highlight of this place is the restroom on whose walls half a dozen of the barista's (or the owner's?) framed pictures with different gestures are hung. How do you feel when the barista, the same person who took your order a while ago, looks at you when you're doing your #2?! Doesn't really matter. Because depending on at which picture you're looking, you could see how she feels! Someone please remind me to create my "businesses with most interesting restrooms" list!

I'm so sad that it took me 5 years living in Minneapolis to find this gem of a coffee shop. I spent my undergrad years trying to navigate through crowded, busy coffee shops on and around campus. Now in grad school, my boyfriend and I just discovered The Coffee Shop and I'll never go anywhere else. They have tons of tables, delicious food, amazing drinks, and friendly staff. This is a very down to earth, easy going place to socialize with friends or get work done. They have a huge back room with plenty of outlets. Make sure to get the curried tuna sandwich on whole wheat- wow. Bring your own coffee cup for 30 cents off, and refills are only 50 cents. My only complaint is that there's no music playing, but that's what headphones are for, right? Definitely come to The Coffee Shop for a wonderful experience!

Warm and inviting. Try the Killer Chai!

  • Isabelle M.

This is my neighborhood coffee shop and it's one of my favorites. I often get their curried tuna or chicken salad sandwiches which are pretty excellent. My review isn't 5 stars because I know if I have to get a coffee in 5 minutes or less - regardless of the volume of people - it's probably not going to happen. It doesn't matter if I order a dark roast, chai tea, iced coffee, Americano, time consuming or not, they just never have a sense of urgency.

  • Tony S.

Great iced mocha and the French silk almond pie is worth a try! There is plenty of parking. Park on the street or in the nearby parking lot. They do have a small outdoor seating along the sidewalk. The best is that there is plenty of seating. Tables that can accommodate anything from 2 to 8. Very spacious! No problems meeting friends here or holding small business meetings. Don't forget free wifi.

    (5)
  • Cindy O.

I am not sure what everyone is talking about. Not good coffee. Too loud. Plus, they forgot a part of our order. Threw most of our coffee away and went somewhere else.

Everything a coffee shop should be! Awesome drinks, delicious baked goods, friendly baristas and a great place to sit and sip your drink. They will make you wonder why you ever visited a national chain for coffee.

My bus goes through this hidden gem of a NE neighborhood every day, and finally I recently decided to schedule a client meeting at the Coffee Shop NE. LOVED it! Very warm, friendly place, and it was really buzzing on a Saturday morning/afternoon. We were lucky to be able to grab a table for 3 just as someone was leaving. Love that there's also a big, free parking lot to accommodate anyone shopping around that block. I had a "Hot Jodi" - one of their specialty drinks, a latte with honey and cinnamon. It was heavenly, and I'm already dreaming up my next excuse to come back to this place asap.

This is a really neat neighborhood coffee shop that you can tell the locals use. Quiet. People chatting with friends or working on a laptop. Very friendly staff. Lots of treats that aren't listed on their website menu are piled on the counter wrapped in cellophane (breads & bars), in the deli/sandwich case in plastic boxes (cake & pie slices), or under a large glass cake dome (muffins & croissants).... Serious eye candy for the tummy! You know what I mean. These items are all brought in from area bakers. The food they make on site is also good. I had a terrific salad with pistachios, cranberries, apples and feta. My girlfriend had a chicken salad on a croissant and enjoyed it. We both had coffee and chocolate cake, which was a monster piece of rich dark goodness.... Heaven.

Just came by to check out the place and have some sweets. Red Velvet Cake - Mediocre. Egg Nog Scone - Mediocre. Didn't taste like egg nog. The desserts weren't worth it, but honestly, it was a nice looking place. There's wooden tables and chairs in the front, and a nice couch lounge area in the back.

I love this little place. The first time I stopped in was to have coffee while waiting for my table at Hazel's to open up. I've been back just for the coffee shop itself several times since. It is my go-to now that Anodyne has closed. Great coffee, great environment, good food.

Thanks to my vintage-connoisseur friend Sara W. for showing me this darling place on our trip to Rewind Vintage! You walk in and immediately feel welcome; the staff are incredibly friendly and greet local frequenters by name. It's a great place to grab coffee with a friend, people watch, study, or just take in the art on the walls. I got their chicken salad sandwich - wow is it good! There's a light hint of bleu cheese, walnuts, and cranberries. YUM. I'm definitely going to go back and get this again ~ and a latte!

I have passed this place multiple times on my frequent adventures to Rewind Vintage, yet have never stopped in. I decided I needed a new place to study and this shop immediately came to mind. This place is fantastic! Locals gather here, and the managers know everyone by name. New goal for the week: I want to be remembered by name too, and that won't be difficult to go back, as their food & coffee is delicious! I opted to try their Field Greens Salad, which is a delight mixture of greens, beets, onions, pistachios, apples, crasins, feta, & vinaigrette. Now that's what I call a salad. The space is not very big, yet roomy enough to come for a quick bite to eat with friends, or come to study at a table. However, it appeared as I was one of the only lingering ones here, as most people sat down with their coffee, read the paper, and then exited shortly after. They have a bunch of "specialty drink" options as well, and I can't wait to return to try out the Killer Chai (Chai tea + almond + chocolate). Enough said. As others have mentioned, omg OUTLETS! Can I tell you how difficult it has been to find a study venue with great food AND more than 2 outlets within a 6 ft square? Well ladies & gentlemen, this is the spot to go. Also, had to check out the restroom as Annie D. made me curious for more. There are four scattered mustaches on the mirror along with a hilarious photo stream of funny pictures. I loved every second of it. Can't wait to make this a routine place after my Rewind splurges. Next time the cheese place & killer chai are on the agenda!

Great place for coffee and catching up with an old friend. I've been going here since 2002 when it was called "Audobon," which is probably a little more original than "The Coffee Shop," but luckily the name change didn't affect the quality of the joint. The men's bathroom is funny, as you feel like you are being watched by the pictures on the wall. My favorite bakery, 'Sarah Jane's' is right across the street. They make a great team.

this place is THE best coffeeshop in minneapolis. (yeah, i said it.) maybe even the world? they have free wifi, and tons of seating available in the back. they always have awesome music playing over the speakers and the bathroom wall art is adorable. ambience is a 10/10 for me. they also feature local art for purchase and switch it up pretty often, so many artists have an opportunity to showcase their talents. they have delicious food - sandwiches, salads, soups are all great, but my favorite is just a toasted asiago bagel with their homemade garden veggie cream cheese. seriously, try it. so simple, but so. damn. good. i haven't tried their desserts (i know...d'oh!) but i hear that the millionaire pie is out of this world. and the coffee, oh the coffee...it's so good! i usually get a hot jodi with soymilk (a latte with honey and cinnamon), but every once in a while, i will try something different. (right now, they do have pumpkin spice lattes...and they are leagues better than starbucks...just sayin'.) what really seals the deal for me, though, is the service. these people are the epitome of minnesota nice. the employees are so genuine and they work hard to make sure you have a great experience. coffee shop ne also PROMOTES the other johnson st. businesses, which is really cool. they know how important these small businesses are to the community and they acknowledge that openly. coffee shop ne, i just love you, oh so much. please don't change! you are the best.

What would I do without The Coffee Shop in my neighborhood? I would be tired, hungry, and sad, I guess. We just moved about five blocks from this coffee haven on Johnson, and it was quickly incorporated into my daily ritual. From the first time I stopped in, I could tell that this was a place where people come to see their friends and neighbors, read a book, enjoy a perfect cup of coffee, and nosh on some tasty eats. The coffee really is delicious - the lattes are creamy and rich, and their drip is totally satisfying. They have salads (the Greek is delectible), made-to-order sandwiches (even a veggie 'wich with avocado!), a veggie container with broccoli, carrots, and dip, fresh-cut fruit, Bruegger's bagels, melt-in-your mouth croissants, and yogurt-berry-granola parfaits, which makes The Coffee Shop by far the most diverse eatery-coffee-shop in my experience. The ladies behind the counter are always friendly and energetic, and seem to completely relish being part of the NE community (who doesn't?!). Whether you want to grab a bite to eat and a fresh cuppa joe on your way to work, grab a lunchtime sandwich, or sit down with a book, enjoy the art and people-watching, and snack on some broccoli, The Coffee Shop will not disappoint you. They have adorable gear (pint glasses? Check. T-shirts? Check. Coffee mugs? Check!), a sweet bulletin board with all the neighborhood goings-on, and a book shelf to peruse. TCS is a lovely addition to the quaint Johnson Street community, and I'm welcoming them with open arms, and a dire need for morning caffeine.

I'm a huge fan of this place. If you came before they expanded, I would highly recommend you visit again. The back room has such a quiet lovely energy about it. I especially love the big family-sized dining room table in the back. The baristas are cordial and I've never had a problem with the wi-fi. If you're a tea drinker, try to the rhubarb oolong, but not after 8 PM! Lots of outlets and very little attitude. If you're looking for a scene, this place is not for you. But if you're looking for a trusted and pretty quiet spot to get some work done or have a chat with a friend, this place is a must!

I basically live off the classic cold press (maple syrup and soy) - it's not too sweet, and really gets me going in the morning. Jodi and Jenny really know what they are doing, and have hired themselves a great crew. The neighborhood wouldn't be the same without them!!

I visited The Coffee Shop NE on a Friday morning before work. Having just moved to the area, I appreciate the location at 27th and Johnson - not much else in the way of coffee shops in a nearby radius, so I hope they have a lot of success there! The Coffee Shop NE seems to fit its name well: feels very much like a neighborhood coffee shop, where anyone and everyone is completely welcome. It's the kind of place that brings a smile to your face. I tend to keep it simple at coffee shops, so I can't say much about the various drink options. But I do appreciate Coffee Shop NE selling a medium coffee for just $1.90 with tax. And it was a great cup of coffee.

My father owns his own cafe in California; thus, I've been spoiled with drinking really great coffee without having to purchase drinks from large chains. So when I moved here to the Twin Cities, I was determined to support a local business that offers high quality espresso drinks, coffee, and other goodies. Quite honestly, the Coffee Shop NE is one of the few cafes in the area that I've been to that truly delivers. The Coffee Shop NE is a friendly, cute shop that provides a great place for studying and meeting up with friends. The staff members always make an effort to say hi and they truly know how customer service really works. It's also evident that the baristas know what they're doing here; they are consistent and skilled when it comes to making drinks. I really do think that their coffee and espresso drinks are delicious and can be enjoyed by coffee aficionados and novices alike. They also offer teas and other beverages for customers who don't drink coffee. The Coffee Shop NE is also great when it comes to food. They offer breakfast dishes, desserts, sandwiches, and daily specials in case your'e hungry! Other perks: Free Wi-fi (ask the baristas for the password because they change it daily), loyalty cards ($2.00 off a purchase after 10 punches), and lots of outlets and tables. I finally found my favorite cafe in Minneapolis. I recommend others to come and support this local business.

I had never been to the Audubon Park neighborhood of Northeast Minneapolis before, and what a surprise! The Coffee Shop NE is situated on a block or two of great local businesses like Hazel's NE, Crafty Planet, Sarah Jane's Bakery, Rewind, and A Bag Lady--all of which I wanted to check out, but didn't have time. The Coffee Shop NE has a very neighborhood-centric feeling and is very bright and full of energy. The shop is split into two seating areas: the front area, being right next to the counter, is buzzing with life, and the back area is a little more mellow with comfy couches and armchairs and a couple large tables that you could sit up to 8+ people at. Even though it's a bit quieter in the back, noise seems to reverberate a lot, so it's never very quiet. The woman working the register was 110% friendly and helped me decide what to order. They offer seemingly every coffee drink known to man and a large array of signature and specialty drinks. Since they have so many specialty drinks I decided it would be worth having something froofy from their Winter Specialties menu. The woman originally recommended the Egg Nog Latte, which she promised was not over-sweet at all, but upon ordering it she found out they were out of egg nog. So instead I ordered the Mrs. Claus' Elixir, which was a latte with cinnamon and peppermint [syrup]. All of their coffee is fair-trade organic, which makes me very happy. The drink was exactly what I wanted it to be: warm and delicious. I can't even attempt to comment on the flavor of the espresso, since it was chock full of milk, cinnamon, and peppermint, but I was in creamy cinnamony heaven (it could have used a little more mint, but I'll let that slide). In terms of things I didn't try, they have an entire menu of sandwiches, pastries, salad, soup, and other random items, and they also sell packaged treats like chocolate-covered berries, chocolate-covered coffee beans, and chocolate bars (so much chocolate!) They also have a fun little merch section with Coffee Shop NE wares (including really cool $5 clear glass mugs), coffee-making supplies, and other fun artistic things. And of course, their specialty drink menu is so unique and extensive that I want to come back and attempt to try every single one of them, caffeinated and not.

The fact that I can walk to this coffee shop from my house is utterly fantastic. The fact that they have gluten free options for snacks and food (and the fact that they have GOOD food AND COFFEE) is priceless. I mean, PRICELESS. This lovely neighborhood coffee shop is what the name implies; however, they are oh so much more snazzier than that. The atmosphere is chilled and laid back and you can literally run into your neighbors here, which is why I like it so. The prices are more than reasonable and their variety of what they brew and stock (especially for tea) are great. The staff are great and pleasant and I truly dig the fact that they use local artists for the decor. Sometimes you strike up conversations with some one at a neighboring table or even the staff, but if you don't want to talk - no worries! People will leave you be and not be weird about it. They have Wi-fi that is faster than any chain coffee shop I've gone too. Keep in mind that this place is not huge, so if you pop-by and can't get a seat don't stress. Get your fix and (if it is nice) have a seat outside, or at a stool table, or take your goodies to go. And speaking of goodies, the food is healthy, fresh, and delisious. I had a curry tuna salad on my last visit and there was an option to have them with gluten free crackers. Now tell me, what other coffee shops give you an OPTION? That's right - an option. They now accept credit cards which, as someone that forgets to carry cash, used to stress me out. No more! Stop in and check them out, especially the bathrooms with the mustache art. I'm here frequently so don't be afraid to chat me up if you see me.

This place recently expanded and has a lot more tables and study and socializing areas. I love their sandwiches - the Veg - wich is one of the most complete vegetarian sandwiches around. Brie cheese, avocado, red pepper... I mean seriously those are costly ingredients that they don't shy away from. Their killer chai did just that to my husband who is now a zombie constantly coming back for more.

This is a hidden gem for the students at the University of Minnesota. The Coffee Shop NE offers great tasting coffee, baristas who quickly learn your name and order, and most importantly, tons of electrical outlets! There is one for nearly every seat in the restaurant. While the prices are a bit high for a student budget, being able to stay all morning because of the outlets make it completely worth it! The bathroom is always entertaining, as well.

Mid-day on a Monday... there are enough people here to have interesting conversations to eavesdrop without it being crowded. Lots of outlets, lots of well spaced seating in the back room with a variety of table/chair options. Regular tables, living room style couch seating, and a table that could easily sit 8-10 in the very back. Style is comfortable and polished, like if Panera Bread were a neighborhood coffee shop I actually wanted to hang out in. Food is decently priced (this curried tuna salad is too delicioso to not come again) and there's a dirty chai on the menu. Ladies behind the counter are friendly & welcoming, and the bathroom art is not to be missed.

This review reminds me of Alison C's list, Here I Am ("Places so good I am actually there now.") because GUESS WHAT---I'm here. The scene: The Coffee Shop NE (where Audubon used to be). Fresh paint on the walls and modern, cork-like fixtures make it a nice update to the neighborhood. The colors are as warm as the people behind the counter. There are a few sidewalk tables and a counter that looks out onto the street. Best of all, lots and lots and LOTS of power outlets. And whatever you do, you must go to the bathroom here. Do it. Squeeze one out if only to experience what it's like to be watched and photographically judged by the gawking Coffee Shop NE lady on the wall. Then you can order your coffee from that lady and it will be awkward. Don't worry though---she'll know why. The cast: A medley of characters from the neighborhood that are working on their computers (like me); a couple of quiet gentlemen reading on the two armchairs in back; three younger guys taking a breather from the construction work they are doing nearby; the manager of Amici Pizza; and the stylin' manager of Rewind (her son in tow). Uh...wow... that was surprising. When I look up from my computer, it turns out I recognize a lot of people here! Excuse me while I go say hi... OK, I'm back. The props: Small cold press with soy and maple ($3.50). It's one of the specialties. It's very sweet, but it is perfect if you're looking for something creamy and dessert-like. It also was NOT very small, so I don't know what the large looks like. I think I'd like to try one of their iced teas next time (I overhear rhubarb is one of the flavors!). They also have a small menu of sandwiches, pastries and snacks. All in all, it's an as-good-as-it-gets showing for this renewed coffee shop on Johnson! Encore!

Great coffee shop in a fun little part of NE. Their cold press coffee is delicious and strong - leaves me feeling highly caffeinated for the rest of the day. I love their expansion, since there's more than enough seating now and it's such a warm and cozy (but spacious) atmosphere. Almost makes me wish I were still a student, so I could go study there! They also hold events regularly, like open mic nights and I know they hosted a fundraiser for the Minneapolis Brave New Voices team earlier this summer (even kept going through the power failure during that awful storm!). Some coffee shops just aren't made to host events, whether music or otherwise, but this one has a great set up for it.

Get the chicken salad sandwich. You won't regret it! The Coffee Shop NE recently expanded, so they have more seating now. Its my favorite place for a quick lunch.

Love this place! Coffee is fabulous, and the food is super tasty. My daughter loves the quiche and greens (she's three), and I'm a high fan of both the chicken salad and the veg-wich. The workers and customers are all wonderful! It's our go to place!

After finding the wait at hazels too long, went across the street to this place. No regrets. Lots of coffee choices, and non-coffee. The maple soy coldpress was very sweet, but the coffee flavor was excellent. Plenty of street parking. A decent selection of breakfast and lunch stuff in the case. Friendly staff. It's very spacious inside, with lots of seating. The back room is really cute, and perfect except for the lack of windows. A sign said they have a live music series, which is cool for a little coffee place.

Great coffee. We usually arrive on Saturday mornings. First we grab a donut or three at Sarah Jane's Bakery across the street and get a coffee here before heading to pickup ultimate. Service is always friendly, even when it is super busy. We've only ever gotten coffee here but I'd love to stop in for a quick snack some other time. Coffee and teas are always decent and the price is right.

As I type these words, I find my fingers with immediate regret. Pro: I'm so damn happy there is a community-focused coffee shop within blocks from my house. The quality of the to-go lunches, coffee, desserts, pastry items, and cookies are great. The service is friendly and warm, and the bustling pace adds to a great vibe that you can tell the owners work hard to give in their business. ugh con ugh i hate myself ugh: There are a few folks that run the till that take OMG WAY TO FREAKING LONG. When you are dropping in for a coffee on your way to work, speed counts. So I find myself stopping at Caribou when I don't have a lot of time to spare. I'd rather give Coffee Shop NE my $$'s. But, again ... this is so crummy, you take TOO LONG. Stop rambling on and on about mundane chatter when I am tapping my toe or offering any visual cue that I am rushed. Look at the long line, see the faces of those that wait, and gauge your level of chatter based upon these findings. Also, you need to have more variety of scones and such. Quality is great, but more selection. What if you had a basket of Sarah Jane's pastries? Or even some quick energy-bar-from-scratch breakfast starters? Otherwise, all is fine. Great, even. I'm thankful you are in the 'hood. I'm thankful that you uphold your community-focused vibe. I hope that a coffee shop neighbor doesn't swoop in with more variety and MORE SPEED (OMG) that takes over your hold in our community.

The atmosphere is nice but the espresso is not the best. So it's a great place to hang if you aren't particular about quality of the pull. The front is more 'shop' cozy and the back is more 'lounge' cozy.

I really want to support a local coffee joint but every time I've been in since I moved to the neighborhood I've had a bad experience. It's always social hour at the register while there's a line of people, they've messed up my order 2 out of the 3 times I've been here and it's just SLOW. Food wasn't that great and I can get a coffee anywhere. I was in with a friend once and the girl decided she didn't want to give my friend the macciato she asked for and gave her a mysterious latte instead, even though macciato is on the menu. This place is consistently disappointing. Sorry guys, I won't be back if I can help it.

I am not sure what everyone is talking about. Not good coffee. Too loud. Plus, they forgot a part of our order. Threw most of our coffee away and went somewhere else.

Neighborhood coffee shop with the best drinks, treats, tasty salads and sandwiches, bagels, etc... Great atmosphere. Don't go here if you're a drive thru type of person. It takes time to make coffee and snacks to order, but it's worth a wait. Nice people!

I love this little place. The first time I stopped in was to have coffee while waiting for my table at Hazel's to open up. I've been back just for the coffee shop itself several times since. It is my go-to now that Anodyne has closed. Great coffee, great environment, good food.

  • Amanda K.

I basically live off the classic cold press (maple syrup and soy) - it's not too sweet, and really gets me going in the morning. Jodi and Jenny really know what they are doing, and have hired themselves a great crew. The neighborhood wouldn't be the same without them!!

The expanded dining space is a huge win. The menu has options for gluten-free vegetarians, which I appreciate. Good coffee, friendly staff, and a great place to get some work done.

Keep up the great work!

this place is THE best coffeeshop in minneapolis.
