My lovely roommate and I went to check out The Beat last night. We were intimidated by the two outdoor tables full of people wearing all black, but we forged on and had a pleasant time playing a casual game of Trivial Pursuit (I love that they have a few board games lying around). I knew I had to try the chai after reports that it was better than Uncommon Grounds' chai. I didn't think it was better - just different. It was a little lighter and not as sweet as Uncommon's. I stand loyal to my Uncommon Grounds chai. Anyway, we had a nice time until the heavy rock show started in the main room. We high-tailed it outta there seeing as we could only communicate via pointing and yelling in each other's faces.

Some very good coffee here. Not everyone here knows their coffee well but if you get the right barista you can get a real education. Ask about their relationship with the coffee grower! Overall I'm impressed with what The Beat is up to: good coffee, personable and knowledgeable staff, a good effort toward local art and music, and even a spiritual connection. The nearby Isles Bakery takes the prize for pastry (best buns in town) but not for java. For Uptown coffeeshops serving real coffee The Beat takes the lead. Follow Twitter for special deals (@TheBeatCoffee).

Ouch. Drinking the espresso actually hurt. The machiatto was painful. The French Press was actually nauseating. I think I have finally found a place that makes worse coffee and espresso drinks than Star Bucks. This is it.

I like that the beat has gotten rid of the conventional drip coffee for the much better French Press! make me smile knowing theres a shop that has a focus on flavor in there house coffee instead of volume. I also really enjoyed the chai! way better than uncommon grounds! the atmosphere is a bit funny.. certainly setup to be a music venue which is great, but I don't know if the lighting is just not right or what it is that makes the dining area, feel so awkward and huge! go there, try the chai! don't diss Jesus while your there..

coffee is very excellent. baristas friendly. prices crazy cheap. and i've only seen a doughnut cop here once. if you're at the starbucks or caribou just up the street instead of here, you're an asshole.

I just LOVE the beat. The baristas are talented and personable. It was very easy to return again and again to the point that i'm a regular.

The Beat has really good French Press coffee. That's about all they have going for themselves. I don't care for the ambiance of the place, and probably would never come here for a show at night, but definitely during the day for a nice cup of coffee, I haven't tried the chai yet, but if it's better than Uncommon Grounds (in which it should be, considering all UG uses is a cheap powder formula) I will more than likely be in there soon to give it a try! The location of this place is pretty interesting too, it doesn't seem like it would be a coffee shop when looking at it from Hennepin, but don't be discouraged, the place is good for what it does right...fresh press!

The cold press is great. They know how to make a killer latte too! Service is always fast and friendly!

Love this place. I come here nearly every day. Friendly staff. I'm also not a coffee snob, so I dont know how good the coffee is or isnt. But I am without Internet at home, and can come in here and buy a coffee, surf the web for a while without being interrupted. The space is never over crowded or too loud. Nice calm place to relax.

I'm self-diagnosed with ADHD and my laptop sucks up battery life like a thirsty fat kid so Tea Garden has gotten way too loud and distracting and I have more fingers on one hand than Rustica has to electrical outlets. Welcome to my new favorite coffee shop. Cozy, quiet, and relaxing. Plenty of electrical outlets, the best chai latte, and who doesn't love a fake fireplace? I love the beautiful local art work on the walls but my favorite has to be the stainless steel tea kettles with drilled holes and a light bulb that's turned into a table lamp. Ahh so creative. It's seriously the most quiet coffee shop/place I've ever been to and I love it. The world seems to slow down when I'm here and I think everyone (okay, maybe some people) that come here respect and appreciate the quietness as well.

I've dawdled past The Beat approximately a million times. Never had I much desire to check it out. It kind of seemed uninviting and dark - a result of insufficient windows that prohibit a glimpse of the inside. Finally, this past Friday, a local Meetup group had coordinated an event at The Beat, to watch some local bands perform... at no cover charge. Apparently, this is a regular thing on some (every?) Fridays from 7-9p. Both bands did great - the music was very relaxing and pleasant (or at least inoffensive), I guess maybe falling under the rock genre. I anticipate returning during the daytime to get some work done here. The space was modern yet cozy. Much more natural light than I was expecting, but the windows inhibit views of the outside world - I suppose this could give way to feelings of being trapped for some people. As for the menu, I only tried an iced tea - red berries - and it was very refreshing. The sparkling tea list also piqued my curiosity. And The Beat offers food items too, beyond the usual assorted baked goods. I'm docking one star for (1) the inability to see outside, just slightly maddening, and (2) certain beverages not being freshly prepared (i.e. the smoothies are made from Naked juice). These shortcomings aside, The Beat is a really cool local cafe. I'll be returning for both the live music and to whittle away at my workload.

One of the better mochas I've had in Minneapolis - really full bodied with just the right amount of chocolate and steamed milk without tasting more like hot chocolate than coffee. The barista was really nice and brought the coffee out to my table. The space was also really comfortable and lots of natural light and seating with both couches and table seating, along with a stage for live music. Another bonus for me is that it is within walking distance of the bus terminal and of the three coffeehouses that are, this is probably my number 2 (after Isles because their baked goods are phenom and Beat didn't have as many options but over Uncommon because of coffee quality/flavour). Update: back again a week later and got a breve with caramel. Different barista but still a fantastic drink. They must use a really great roaster.

The Beat is a quaint (and somewhat forgotten) coffee shop off of 28th in Uptown. For my fellow mobile warriors, there's plenty of seating and outlets, and the music doesn't make your ears bleed. It's also refreshing, since there's a non-pretentious and cozy vibe. However, several things could improve: -I think their coffee is A-OK, but it's not necessarily a main draw for me. In other words, I wouldn't go out of my way to get a cup there. -I like Trader Joe's, but I don't want to visit a coffee shop to get Trade Joe's chai. Maybe do a tastier spin using it? -It's a bit too dark inside. Even a vampire like me thinks that the inside could include another light or two. -Every time I've visited, rock music has been played. Maybe something more soothing? I hope The Beat succeeds! The people there are great!

Pick a naked juice and they blend it in ice to make a delicious smoothie. I get it every time. 5 stars

I "work from home", which generally means I "work from coffee houses" at least twice a week. The Beat is a gem in Minneapolis, a quiet yet urban atmosphere, attractive to the hipster and business professional alike. The coffee and food are good, and baristas are friendly and efficient. It is a home away from home for me when in uptown, and a place frequented by friends and family on a regular basis. Ownership is friendly and very open to speaking with you in person if on site. Highly recommended.

STUDENT DISCOUNT!?! I didn't know until my second visit. First refill is free for drip coffee, fast internet, friendly service and great atmosphere! At this current time, I don't have anything that I'd change.

A nice place to work or study. Plenty of outlets along the walls. Has a cozy layout and really nice lighting. For straight up coffee drinkers, you get a free refill while there. The breakfast sandwiches are simple but amazing. I get mine open-face to cut out the calories of one of the bread slices and actually it tastes better because the ratio of bread to eggs/cheese/meat works better that way in my opinion. More succulent, less bread-y. Two restrooms are a bonus too!

  • Carter J.

From a "work-from-a-coffee-shop" point of view - pretty great. Quiet. plenty of outlets. Relaxed vibe. Great internet. (16mbs/4mbs) Sit-in coffee mugs also make me feel at home. ++

Good coffee, helpful folks and good service. Don't come for food. You'll have to thumb wrestle skinny kids for the one m&m cookie left in the tiny pastry case.

I love this coffee shop. Their menu is full of awesome drinks, breakfast, and lunch sandwiches and soup. You could literally plant yourself at this cozy shop all day and want for nothing. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is cozy and has plenty of space to make yourself at home and get work done. Plenty of outlets, which is a necessity and the wifi is FAST. This shop has it all, in my opinion. Whether you're looking for a place to be productive, just catch up with a friend over coffee, or call in a quick lunch order to pick up, the beat is the perfect go-to shop!

Great place, great drinks (try the French Press), nice atmosphere, lots of personality. So I used to roast coffee for Dunn Bros way back in the day, and I'm pretty picky. I have a short list of Dunn Bros whose roaster's I like, and then I have another, much shorter list, of places that aren't a Dunn Bros. These guys are on that list along with Kopplins and Corner Coffee, each for various reasons. Worth checking out.

Sort of quaint little place with cozy ambiance (and lots of couches), friendly baristas, and cheaper drinks than I've found most everywhere else. Not as extensive or fancy of a list than Spyhouse, Peace Coffee or other more popular locations, but also not as pricey. Whenever I've been here it's not at all crowded or noisy. Would be a great place for a date or study session. The tea and drop coffee is solid and pretty great cold press. Recommended by this experienced connoisseur of Minneapolis coffeeshops.

It is odd being in a coffee shop that doesn't pack you in like sardines. I've been almost everday of the week, and I never felt crowded. Admittedly, the coffee shop has gone through some changes in the past year with a lot of turnover in the staff, but I have to admit that I am warming to the changes. They introduced new lunch and dinner options - which - yes - are just soup and sandwich, but it is nice to go to a place where I can get free WIFI and have actual food options. Oh, and they have clean restrooms - that's a biggy for me personally. They get big props for aiming to be more than a coffee shop with a cool vibe. Gave a free lunch to the community last summer, and they say that they plan to do it annually. I noticed that they hosted a women's clothing swap. Personally, can't wait to see what's next . . . The baristas are cool. I highly recommend you talk to Dave about Star Wars and Star Trek. I lost two hours in that coversation once - well more than once. Give it one less star because I have a hard time explaining to friends where it is at as the building is unassuming and off of Hennepin. Also, not a lot of space to sit or hang out if they have a group renting out the main room which makes it slightly ackward when you want to just walk out because there is really only one other space to study without being by the counter.

Unless you're paying attention you may never notice The Beat's existence, I know I didn't. It resides on 28th St just around the corner from Hennepin Ave. The storefront is very unassuming, and I must have passed by it fifty times before I knew it existed. The shop was quiet when I arrived around Noon on a Monday. I ordered a double Americano and some apple coffee cake (they were out of cookies) from a friendly barista. They were advertising their brand new addition of soup, but I don't think soup and coffee would mix well. The space of the shop is really wonderful. There are three rooms: the first room includes the counter with a few bar stools, the second room is a tiny intimate space with a small couch, however it's right next to the bathroom so it might not be the quietest or best-smelling choice of seats. The third room is the biggest and main area. It's really great that the area is separated from the counter, because it offers a much quieter space (visually and aurally) to enjoy your coffee. The space is very open and has a ton of "white space" or empty space. It feels like drinking coffee in a ballroom, but instead of causing a cold-detached feeling it's actually quite cozy. The lights are low, the music not too loud, and there is a small gas fireplace. There are tables for two, tables for four, and even tables for eight. There are a few cozy couches and two pianos. This place is minimalism at its best, and I love that. Almost every table and couch next to a wall has an outlet, which makes working very easy as you don't have to vie for the seats with power. The Wifi was fast and reliable. They brew True Stone coffee, which I had never heard of. It's a local roaster in St. Paul. I actually enjoyed the coffee and kind of wanted a second cup. It's no Dogwood, but let's be honest, no one will ever be Dogwood. The coffee menu was concise and easy to navigate, but their website promises that they'll work with you to create your own drink of choice if you want. One thing that made my visit very satisfying was the music: Catherine Feeny, Indigo Girls, Damien Rice, The Weepies...an astoundingly good array of folk singer/songwriters. Of course, a different staff member may mean a less agreeable mix next time. I don't think I would go here to socialize, it was too quiet and dark, but as a work space The Beat was exactly what I look for.

The loose leaf teas are excellent. The staff is friendly, and it's a nice place to lounge out for a while and get into a book or do some writing. However, the music that's been playing during the day is down right awful. If you like adult contemporary this is your spot!

The Beat is an absolutely wonderful hangout place, coffee shop, light snack emporium.... ok... Seriously, the baristas are awesome (is it the hiring process or the water, but they're all great). Beyond their friendliness, the prices are friendly, and the overall vibe of the place is as well. Great (meaning stable) wifi, no hassles, good for everything from business meetings to just plain chilling. If you're so inclined you can strum a guitar or play one of their pianos too. All that and doggy treats for your pet and INCREDIBLE coffee cake with fresh fruit toppings! KEEP the BEAT!

Feels like a local place, except that it's actually clean and has a sweet ambiance. Pretty quiet on weeknights - good for studying!

I never noticed this place which may be a deficit for their business as it is hard to spot. If it wasn't for their sandwich board on the sidewalk I would not have known of their existence. This appears to be an old Service Garage but is a fairly cozy and quiet place for fine roasted coffee. The sitting room has widely spaced tables with high windows which are too high to glare out, but then there wouldn't be much of a view here anyway. The barista was friendly and helpful. We can build our own sandwich by circling your selections on a card. I choose the Sourdough bread. The bread was moist and strong enough to handle the well-stacked sandwich but it is not true Sourdough, more like supermarket bread labeled 'Sourdough' and is more of an imitation. We are allowed one refill on a cup. The first cup was not at proper serving temperature but the second cup was freshly brewed and served correctly. The barista will deliver your sandwich to the table which sounds great but not all places will do that as they will just shout over the crowd that it's ready. It is a quiet place but there were hardly any other customers just before noon on a Saturday. The Wi-Fi is non-password and the music very mellow and sort of New Age. I did like the coffee after it was served at the correct temp., if I lived closer I would make this a regular stop.

I wanted to like The Beat. Really, I did. I live in the duplex next door, and had a cute idea in my head of becoming a regular there, prancing in for cups of fresh French Press (which is only semi-redeeming quality about this place) and being friends with the baristas. However, the baristas are snotty, the hours are irregular, and the coffee frequently tastes burned. If you're into the 16-year-old punk rawk scene, this is the place for you. If not, I'd try one of its friendlier neighborhood counterparts.

I heart The Beat. As I write this, I'm sitting on a comfy couch in a pleasant atmosphere and sipping on a darn good latte. I'd like to come here for a show sometime as well. I asked the barista about bringing a baby here for some music and he explained that they get a huge variety of music, so it just all depends. He also mentioned that they are toying with the idea of putting "volume icons" next to the shows so you'll have an idea of how loud it is...now i think that's a great idea, especially since I'm a bit on the mellower side and wouldn't like doom-metal blaring while I'm sipping on a chai. ;) They have complimentary wifi and some nice photos on the wall that I think you can purchase. I haven't tried the food yet, but as I think this might now be part of my regular coffee shop tour, I'm sure I'll be updating this review soon!

Not pleasant. If it was a movie i would have walked out before it was over. I was hoping to get some work done but the people at the bar (including the Barista) kept talking quite loudly about people with whom they disagreed with. I could have handled that but when they started to talk badly about people who were getting kicked out of their homes because they lost their job, I was done. I will not go back.

Christian coffee shop trying to pretend its just a coffee shop but its obviously a Christian coffee shop because the girl working is wearing a North Central hoodie and listening to Relient K. The good: sandwiches/food are quite good and the staff are pretty nice. Quiet place if you need to get work done w/ comfy seating. Nice stage/performance room where local singer/songwriters occasionally perform if you're into that sort of thing. Also, a parking lot. The bad: coffee and espresso drinks are pretty lousy. This is unfortunate since they are a coffee shop and all.

Ive been an off and on regular at the beat for about two years now, and its one of my go to spots. Its a great neighborhood shop, cause once you get to know the baristas, or whoever they talk to, your introduced into this huge group of friendly people. I enjoy a good french press, or a cup of cold press, and i want to head to uptown, i most always go to the beat. The inside of the shop isnt as fun, mostly cause it doesnt have any windows, but the chairs outside, with umbrellas in the summer is one of my favorite places to people watch.

  • Jessica G.

The only thing good about the Beat Coffeehouse is that it's right around the corner from my house. Aside from that, there are few redeeming qualities. The coffee is fine; nothing to write home about certainly. Other reviewers have mentioned how outstanding their french press is, but that's merely because it's *french press.* The french press I make in my kitchen with Folger's tastes pretty awesome too and I paid three bucks and change for the whole can! The inside of the coffeehouse is really dark with no windows, which doesn't make for an inviting atmosphere, let alone a productive environment where one might do work. The baristas are friendly enough, but their dude friends chill out with them at the bar the whole day too, which causes the cafe to turn into a bit too much of a bro fest for my tastes. Think hipsters bred with hardcore kids hopped up on a lot of coffee and false ego. Mehhh.

So I've passed this place many times on my bike and have been meaning to try it. I finally did, and was a teeny bit disappointed. While the baristas were super nice and the Italian soda was refreshing and not too expensive, the atmosphere was depressing as anything. There are no windows and only dull overhead lighting, making the space feel empty and oppressive at once. The whole space feels like people threw some furniture in it and are planning on coming back to rearrange it one day. But then changed their minds. As comfy as the sofas were, I couldn't help but imagine that it was the one I saw by my apartment's dumpster the previous day. The outdoor seating looks like a fun place for people watching, but inside not so much. Apart from a few other folks, I was the only one in there.

The Beat is one of the more interesting coffee joints I have recently experienced. First off, the ambiance/atmosphere of this place is hard to gauge due to the varying personalities that inhabit the shop at different times during the week. Sometimes it is more of a rock/emo scene, other times a hipster scene, and last night, it was a casual scene. This patron variance is probably the chief reason I don't come here to read or study, even though they have a fantastic "french press". The decor of the actual shop is interesting due to the fact that local art is promoted throughout the building. As are various comics and musicians, which I think is admirable in comparison to your chain coffee shops that can be found just down the street. In fact, it was this type of "local promotion" that brought us to the Beat last night. On Mondays, they have a Comedy night that is rather entertaining and creative. For $4, it is a descent deal to see some local talent try out new material and get involved with the audience. I would strongly advise hitting it up if in the area on a Monday night.

The Beat is where I love to get my coffee. The French Press only method for coffee is well worth the wait. The Best Coffee In Town, IMHO. Friendly people, good food, and a great hang out. We need more places like this in M/SP.

  • Greg N.

French press coffee! The coffee is excellent, and the baristas are happy to be there and do a good job. Baked goods are decent, although not as impressive as the coffee. I can't say the space seems very remarkable, but I haven't ever stayed to thoroughly check it out. This is some of the best coffee in the Twin Cities, in my opinion, which is why I regularly will go out of my way to get a cup here on weekends.
