Taco Taxi is my new local taco spot (I'm new to the area, Taco Taxi isn't) & I must say I am super thankful for having such a great taco spot within walking distance! I ordered 6 tacos: 3 carne asada & 3 al pastor. When I ordered them I was given the choice of either mexican or american style. I have no idea what american style even is, but I definitely didn't come for no "american" tacos so I got mexican style! The carne asada tacos were decent... the carne asada itself was a bit on the dry side & had a chewier-than-normal consistency. The al pastor was AMAZING. If I had only eaten the al pastor, I would've given this place 5 stars... but the sub-par carne asada brings it down a notch. Within the Twin Cities, these are the closest tacos I've gotten to the ones back home in Southern California... the al pastor might even be better than any I've gotten there but shhh don't tell anyone, I don't want them to think I'm a traitor!!

The only thing I can say is that we liked it more the first time. I had the same thing this trip: carne asada burrito. What the heck are peas and corn doing in there? I repeat: What the Heck are peas and corn doing in a burrito? New one me, for sure. Bought a pint of their wicked salsa/condiment to bring home. Not for the faint of heart. I'd still go back.

After watching an archive episode of Anthony Bourdain No Reservations (from Mexico) I got a huge craving for street tacos. Unfortunately, Taco Taxi falls short in meeting even closely what one can experience south of the border. I've tried other taquerias along Lake Street and around the city, but have yet to find a reasonable experience that beckons my return. In part I suspect that this is because in most cases the meat being served is prepared ahead of time and is usually dry. The same is true at Taco Taxi. The search continues for a flavorful and greasy taco within the Twin Cities.

Sometimes I decide to take East Lake when I'm biking home late at night. Sometimes I've had a few beers and have an urgent hankering for a couple tacos before I can call it a night. In my experience I've found that keeping my head down and ignoring the random riff raff that ensues on Lake Street late at night is usually my best bet. That said, THANK YOU TACO TAXI, for being bright freaking yellow. (And for keeping late night hours) You will fall into my peripherial vision and remind me that I do in fact need a couple of your tacos on my way home. I haven't gone so far as to try the tongue tacos yet, but standard steak with cilantro, onions, radish, and lime suits me just fine. Better than fine. They have Horchata too, which is kinda the best beverage I've ever had, so I'm sold. I hear their burritos are awesome too. Soon. Soon.

They asked me if I wanted my tacos Mexican or American Style? I asked what the difference was. They said Mexican has Cilantro on it. Of COURSE you have to have Cilantro on it. Still, they were just OK.

Taco Taxi is an awesome place for cheap, delicious tacos. Their menu is simple enough to fit on a business card, and their tacos are a scant $1.75 each. 2-for-1 sopes deal for $3.50 is great. Try the Cabeza. Honestly one of the most tender, deliciously slow cooked meat I've tasted. The tripé is another unexpected winner. Not that wild about their carnitas, but thats ok. The al pastor certainly makes up for it. Try out this little hole in the wall and you will not be disappointed. Their hours fit the bill, too! Open 9am-2am (3am on weekends!).

The second stop on the first ever Yelp Taco Crawl (thanks Josh E!), I have to say that Taco Taxi was my favorite of the 4 I went to. I missed the one spot in Mercado Central somehow (yeah, I know they were right next to each other), and the informal poll I took had Taco Taxi tied with that missed spot. But since I never tried it, Taco Taxi wins. Delicioso! The pastor taco I had was riquisimo! For some the onion was too heavy, but IMHO everything was balanced perfectly. The salsa was great as well. If I had to change one thing, though, it'd be the lack of cervesa. I suppose the license isn't worth it, seeing as they only have a few tables, but I sure would have loved a cold one with my taco.

Sopes for the win. Two for one Sopes at 2:30 AM after a night at Gasthof's (why do I keep going there?) is awesome. Next time, Lengua time!

I am a fan and it was delicious. I just stopped by and enjoyed some real corn tacos (sorry taco bell). Carnitas, cilantro, lime, radish and some tasty salsa... I'm in heaven! I plan on going back and trying more food. Everything looked good from what I saw. Simple menu, a lot of meat options, and cheap cheap !

After seeing the place on Lake Street for a little while, I decided to stop in and get some tacos to go. I ordered 2 asada (steak) 1 roast pork and 1 regular pork. I had them "Mexican style" (real tacos with meat, cilantro, and onions). All were very tasty and super cheap. They also have Pineapple flavored Juartitos which I have never seen before (super tasty). My bill with the drink was about 9 bucks. They do deliver, and I will be going back. Keep in mind this is an authentic Mexican place, so if you want lettuce or tomatoes on your taco, the only place you will be happy for Mexican food on Lake Street will be Taco Bell. They do take credit cards with a $15 min. I also noticed that they are open until 3 am on the weekends, so a good option for an after bar stop as well.

I've discover a weird trend; I seem to forget to review the places I go the most. Or Yelp has a blackhole that some of my reviews seem to slip into. Anyway. Taco Taxi. Hands down, the best Mexican food on Lake Street. Their Sopes are amazing, and have been 2-for-1 for like, the last year. This is what I order almost every time I come. If I order anything else, it's a quesadilla. The one at Taco Taxi makes the quesadilla at Los Ocampo look like a sorry little creature. I can never finish it by myself, and it just oozes yummy white cheese. And juicy chicken. Good hours, cheap as hell prices, friendly staff. Yum!

Taco Taxi is neck and neck, with El Huachi, as my favorite place, so far, to find really good tacos in the Twin Cities (I praise Alison C for the knowledge of these places.) The prices are great, the ingredients the same, and I can't say enough about how much I love these kinds of places. I just wish I were closer!!! I'm a taco guy, so I didn't try anything else, but the meat, lime, cilantro, onions, and radish, combination, make a perfect balance of cool, and warm, that just tastes like, home! And, when I say "home," I mean comfort food. I can find comfort food in many cuisines, and a good taco is so pure, and comfy, that I get sparkles in my eyes just typing about it. Go get you some Taco Taxi, and experience something special. Taco Taxi is not a place to sit down and enjoy a nice dinner. You go in, you order, you stand and eat your taco. You plop down at one of the few tables and scarf a few down. It's about as casual as you can get... truly fast food. 4.5 stars for my tacos.

I got a steak taco downtown from their little cab/trailer by First Ave. Only $1.50 for the taco. It was pretty good, small but flavorful enough. I ate it in about 20 seconds. I guess if I had like three or four of them it would be pretty filling. I asked for a Diet Coke and the guy said 'Diet Coke', and then handed me a Sprite (?). Sprite will do for me, so I didn't bother correcting it. I wish they'd deliver, but I guess it wouldn't work so well. If you're near their Lake St location or 'outreach bus' it's fine for cheap-ish eats.

My family and I enjoy the food. Its not your typical mexcian reataurant food.. Its a taco truck style of food, which is isnt found frequently in Mn. Im from CA where taco trucks are a dime a dozen. The El pastor is my favorite!

Anyone familiar with Lake Street knows that there is a very large variety of Mexican restaurants, and often times there is not a large enough "draw" on any of them that demands you stop at one vs the other. Los Ocampo has a significant advantage of having its own parking lot, and being located next to Chi-Lake Liquors. Other than that, its really a dice roll of any one of the multiple restaurants along the corridor. So how does a restaurateur make their establishment stick out? Simple. Paint the outside bright yellow and name it Taco Taxi. Based solely on the ridiculous name I decided its important that I check this spot out one day before heading to Powderhorn Park to feed some ducks. Why its named Taco Taxi is one of mankinds greatest mysteries. It does not deliver food, nor does the business seem to possess any taxis other than a few pictures of them. I went there with a couple friends mid-day during the week...and the place was pretty busy as opposed to many of the other establishments we passed nearby. That has to count for something. The food is reasonably priced, and its quick. Plus, they got a creepy bathroom. I would actually give this a 4.5, but this site doesnt like half stars. EDIT: If you're reading this cuz of ROTD...it didnt have delivery at the time. Now it does, therefore a solid 5 is warranted.

Located next to Mercado Central near Lake and Bloomington. Ordered the pastor, carnitas and carne asada tacos. Ordered them Mexican style which is Cilantro and onion, ie. none of this cheese and sour cream nonsense that other places do. Very very tasty, perhaps the meat could be better but everything else is superb. They arrive quickly and they taste so fresh nothing like the tacos I've had before. You even get a grilled onion, chili and lime with your order. Still feeling peckish I then ordered my first ever sopes which was superb. They had a 2-4-1 deal so I got two chicken sopes which were even better than the tacos, huge chunks of meat and tasty garnish. For years I thought Mexican food was just Chipotle. I'm going to have to gorge on places like this to make up for lost time.

I've only been here a couple of times, and the food, both times, was great. I live with my Texan boyfriend, and he recommended it to me. Saying that the tacos (that is all I've ever had from here) are pretty good. Now my boyfriend is a hard ass when it comes to Mexican food, being from about an hour away from the border his whole life, so the fact that he really liked some Mexican food from Minnesota, was not only a shocker, but made me run out and try it out! I have to admit, when I went, everything tasted really fresh. I enjoy the fact that their lettuce actually withstood my drive home, instead of me putting the taco in my mouth, with an ass load of wilted lettuce. That was pleasing. The chicken was spiced perfectly, and the salsa... well, the salsa could use some work, but in my opinion, I need my salsa to be really, really hot. He liked the salsa, though, so who knows? I also like their hours...open late. So when I get a buzz going, and start screaming about tacos.. I just drive my happy ass on over! (huh)

I stopped into this place because Pineda Tacos was closed already...and it was like 8pm. Like the other review says, its hard to miss, its painted pretty brightly out front. Like some of the other taco joints along Lake st. there isn't much for signage, or menus. But I was happy to see a big spit of marinated pork with pineapple on top....all the right makings for Tacos al pastor. So that's what I went for, and I wasn't disappointed. The meat was juicy and covered in a red salsa that had a zing to it. Two fresh corn tortillas, doubled up and hot off the flat top. The nice girl who was working asked me if I wanted mine "mexican or american style?" I took mine mexican style with cilantro and onions. I asked what the "american style" had on it, and it was the same as mexican style, only with lettuce, tomato, cheese and sour cream. In summary, tasty tacos al pastor, served with a smile.

It was a gorgeous, warm afternoon when I walked out of downtown Target and I decided to get something to eat. Problem was I didn't know where to eat, so I just kept walking south of Nicollet and thinking what I wanted. 2 miles of walking later, I end up in Taco Taxi in Midtown. I've been meaning to come to this place since I've read on Yelp that they serve authentic Mexican food. And after sampling their pollo and asada sopes, I could honestly say it does taste like any other decent Mexican eatery in SoCal. The sopes were 2-for-1, which I thought was a fantastic deal coz they're pretty sizable, stacked with meat of choice, lettuce, tomatos, cilantro, onions, and salsa. The thick tortilla was flaky and a little bit moist in the center from all the meat's juices; I will say the chicken was a little bit dry though. The asada was well done, however. To justify and/or reward myself for walking miles to this place, I ordered a carnitas burrito to-go, which I will devour manana. I did take a small bite of it already, and it tastes like the real Mission-style burrito that I love. Every time I crave good Mexican food, I can just head over Taco Taxi; whether I actually trek over there is TBD.

Nice little hole in the wall, mexican food joint. The food is really good, pretty cheap. I don't think I'd ever eat in as it is really small and not much for atmosphere you could say. But they are open late for a great after bar food stop. I recommend the Sopes 2-4-1 anytime.

I love these tacos - nothing reminds me more of Mexican Street Food then this great big yellow travelling food cart that I had the pleasure of eating from last night at the Casket Arts Building in NE Minneapolis. They were there as part of a fall art event. I had the steak taco - carne asada taco. It was being grilled right there in the parking lot in their bright yellow travelling Taco Taxi Truck! The air was filled with delicious scent and it drew me right in. Corn tortilla, grilled steak, topped with limey onions and cilantro and some house made spiciness! Yum! Lucky for me they will be at the Cache event again today...

I don't like giving crappy reviews, but this place is lame.... Perhaps I'm a bit of a burrito snob after living in SF for five years, but this "burrito" they serve has not much going for it -one, there's no guacamole, two, the meat (I had the Carnitas) was super funky -it just tasted off and was all grisly, and three, why can't anyone here figure out that key to the super amazing burrito is to flash fry the tortilla on the griddle with some lard before rolling it up? All the taqueria's in the Mission do this, and it just adds so much to your burrito experience. And to cap it all off, let's just say it went "through me" quite fast....it was like Montezuma's revenge without leaving the country....be grateful I even gave you the two stars Taco Taxi.....maybe you were just having a bad day in the kitchen, but I'm not gonna be back....

A nice little taco shop in an area filled with them. Their menu was short and simple. I can't remember everything on it: tacos, burritos, quesadillas, sopas, tortas, and some soup. The sopas were 2 for 1 and looked delicious. They had a variety of meat; from what I remember, el pastor marinaded pork), lengua (tongue), carnitas (fried pork), carne asada (steak), chicken, tripe and probably a few more I'm forgetting. I had an el pastor burrito. I was happy to see a pineapple on top of the el pastor spit rotating around in the kitchen so I had to give I a whirl. I'm not sure what they marinade it in but it was tasty in my chipotle sized burrito. I'll have to try the sopas next time I'm here. Oh and they're open late.

Taco Taxi is a win for me every time. It's pretty much impossible to miss on Lake St, as it is painted in vibrant greens and yellows with it's cute little taxi logo emblazoned on the front. It is a small establishment that lacks all the bells and whistles of a fancy mexican restaurant, but for what it lacks in interior decor, it more than makes up for it in the flavor and quality of their food. The employees there are always pleasant and helpful, and usually when I go there, they graciously smile at my broken spanish as I engage in conversation with them. I typically go with a chicken burrito and wash it down with a Jarrito. Taco Taxi is an eat in or take out mexican eatery with great hours. Open until 3am on the weekends!!! Woo!! On quite a few occasions I have sauntered into the restaurant after bar close and tried to soak up some of the cheap beer I had just consumed with a greasy, amazing burrito. Taco Taxi is one of my favorite night caps to a great evening. Taco Taxi always has fresh ingredients and their food is made to order. I've never had a problem with substituting things on the menu; the staff there always wants you to get exactly what you want. Every bite of their food is amazing, from first to last. I have never had an experience spoiled by old lettuce or funky tasting chicken. Always the best! If you have never tried it before, I encourage you to do so. I have never had a bad experience at Taco Taxi. It's one of those places that I get a hankering for every now and then, which is a good sign in my book. In fact. . .I kind of want a chicken burrito right now. . . . Go there!

Definitely right up there with pinedas. Tried the tacos one chicken one steak. Meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly. Toppings cilantro radish and jalepeno was a very nice touch. Loved the cheap prices 1.75 a taco can't beat that. By the way I did add jalepeno and salsa but the chicken still packs a punch. Only complaint is you can only use a credit card for purchases over $15. But the guy let me slide since my purchase was only 5 bucks.

Let's start by the fact that even though i was never a big fan of Mexican food, Taco taxi made me crave tacos. I have not tried many items but the ones that I have had i can solemn swear on their tastefulness. Chicken Tacos were to die for. Moreover enjoy the Spanish shows playing on the television. What I saw was pretty hilarious for many reasons and i don't even speak Spanish. The place might seem a little run down but to me it is part of its urban charm.Though i was not really excited when they turned down my restaurant.com gift card but they did apologize for it so no worries on that end. I say it is a 'must try'.

YUM! Is all I can say, it's not pretty inside or out but the food is delicious! I got the Asada tacos. It comes with 4 tacos. I like mine Mexican style but the do offer your basic American style tacos as well. Took about 5 min for my food to come out and boy was it delicious! Plenty of meat and toppings! I love the tacos in California and found it soo hard to find tacos here in mn that taste as good and now I can say taco taxi is the place! Downfall is parking, it's street parking but the few times I've been here I've gotten parking right in front. Definitely will continue to come back.

Taco Taxi is going to get you to flavortown crazy fast and it won't charge you surge pricing during peak times. I'll admit, I was a little to hesitant to try this place when I walked in and saw that there was one table of customers there during dinner time. My friend (Jackie C.), who is from east L.A., swears by this place so I went with her to get our taco fix. Girl was on point with her recommendation! I ordered the al pastor and carne asada tacos. The meat was grilled to perfection and the fresh onions, cilantro, and homemade salsa really hit the spot on a Sunday evening. The simple ingredients created such a complex flavor combination! Absolutely loved it. I tried some of Jackie C.'s horchata and I must say it was one of the best versions I've had in the Twin Cities. Here is a little tip...please don't order "American tacos" when you go there! They have them as an option but that is what TBELL is for! Go for the real tacos and you'll leave happy. This taco spot is truly definition "hole in the wall" but it's clean, staff are friendly, and service is fast. The decor is a little hilarious with the toy taxis every where but it has its own personality and is a great casual place to grab quality tacos. There is plenty of parking outside at the meters and right next door is Mercado Central if you want to grab some Mexican pastries, dulces, or Quinceanera party dress after your meal.

My favorite place to get legit burritos and tacos! This place is the closest you get to the real thing. The burritos typically have your choice of meat, rice, refried beans, diced onion, cilantro and green or red salsa. So simple but sooo flavorful. To complete my meal I never leave this place without a large horchata, a sweet rice and cinnamon based water. The staff is also very friendly and the location is very clean. Love this place!

There are a lot of choices for tacos on Lake Street and this place stands out. Tortillas are best. The Mexican style beef tacos are my favorite but the chicken is good too. Friendly staff and easy to get in and out of.

I love coming here at all times of the day. They are open late so its perfect after bar food or just good take out. I really don't recommend anything other than tacos. I've had quac and burritos but its all kind of texmex and not anything to write home about. You gotta get the tacos. I usually get carnitas and pastor Mexican style NOT American style. They are so cheap and the flavor is amazing. The salsa is really good too. They are so cheap and satisfying and they never leave me feeling like its greasy or processes. Just good meaty, authentic tacos. Oh yeah ,its a little scary at night lots of prostitutes and undesirables milling around but they usually have a security guard so the thrill and risk is totally worth it for some NOT run of the mill tacos.

Taco Taxi satisfied my craving for delicious tacos and burritos. The al pastor (pork) was made fresh on the spot. The corn tortillas (Mexican style tacos) is recommended. Comes with a home-made puréed spicy spicy salsa, cilantro, diced onions, and slices of radish. Customer service was great-the lady who helped us was patient and explained the menu items. The meat options were reduced to 3 on New Year's Day: chicken, al pastor (pork), and beef. They have over 7 options normally, including lingua (cow tongue) and tripe for an authentic Mexican flair. Arroz (rice) side dish was a bit dry and had crunchy pieces.

My recent encounter with Taco Taxi left me quite unsatisfied. I went to the restaurant with a friend of mine and I got a veggie burrito. The first strike was their lack of even rice for burritos- something that should be on stock at all times but i'm willing to forgive that.....until I noticed they have a 15 dollar minimum on credit card transactions, way too steep for what it is. Then the final blow nosedived my review, they left us waiting for 25 minutes then we found out....they never put our order through so we had to wait another 15 minutes for our food. I was very disappointed by Taco Taxi and I don't think I will be returning.

Authentic Mexican tacos. Open till 2am almost every night. Perfect for the drunk munchies that you are having. Have horchatas too!!!! I go often just because it's that good. Don't give chipotle the business because these guys do it way better!

The food here is amazing, and the food was done super quick! The menu might be sort of difficult to understand but the staff is great about explaining it to you. The sauce they give you with the tacos is amazing!

I love their tacos. Sopes are good, but damn, their tacos are on point. If you hit up the truck, they are only 1.25. Treat yourself, bring these to a hungover friend and be a GOD!

It's no-frills, but no-nonsense. The people there are fast and friendly, and the food is cheap and delicious. I've been going there for years, and I have nothing to complain about. It's great when I'm hungry at 1am.

I was introduced to this place by a few friends who rave about this place. To be fair, I only had one taco while i was here but it was a pretty darn good taco. I don't know much about real Mexican food, but if I were to guess I would guess that this is probably pretty close without having to fly to Mexico. The food is simple, tasty and cheap. The restaurant itself is unassuming, clean, and sits in the heart of Little Mexico in South Minneapolis. Based on my one taco experience and raving friends, I would definitely come back here again.

Calling this drunk food is an insult. It's fresh, authentic, and delicious. The only drunk friendly characteristic is that its cheap! I usually order the vegetarian sopes (always 2 for 1) Can't tell you how often I order carry out...more than I'd like to admit. FYI: $15 minimum on credit cards though

It's hard to drive by taco text you without stopping. The food is simple and consistently good. And you can't beat the prices!

  • Whitney G.

The sopes here were pretty amazing, and the food is very decently priced. I like that it came with additional corn tortillas with meat, but the meat on the corn tortillas was a little too fatty or stewed until it was too soft. Be careful, if you need to use your card, there's a $15 minimum.

Taco Taxi is the most underrated taco place in Minneapolis. The only legitimate competition I have found is Taco Rienda in Northeast, but if you live south of Downtown like me, and want a no frills, authentic, and delicious experience, do yourself a favor and hit up Taco Taxi. La Hacienda is tasty, but Taco Taxi absolutely spanks them in the burrito department. Los Ocampo has an insane amount of food/meat options, but Taco Taxi's limited options are still executed with much more precision. Las Teresitas has an entire salsa bar which is cool, except for the fact that Taco Taxi's two homemade salsas beat anything that Teresitas brings to the table. Taco Taxi has the best burrito I have had in the Cities, hands down. This thing is absolutely massive: easily a pound of food for 7 dollars. This is not a Hungry-Man frozen dinner pound of food though: this is an absolutely orgasmic cocktail of delicious, juicy marinated meat (I recommend the al pastor above all), mixed with the stickiest, most perfectly cooked rice (which is cooked with peas and carrots, an interesting and unique touch), and finally, a flour tortilla that is always up to the rigors of holding in this massive amount of meat and starch. It comes with a healthy amount of limes, fresh radishes, and phenomenal salsa. Oh, the salsa. I could bathe in this stuff. The standard red salsa that is given is unbelievable. Smoky, spicy, fresh, and so utterly un-Minnesotan (this is a good thing people, you are at a Mexican restaurant). But....PRO-TIP: the red is amazing, but if you're feeling frisky, ask for their green salsa. It's one of those "in-the-know" items, but damn is it good. Creamy, spicier than the red, and a complex earthy flavor. These guys straight up nail it. I am partial to burritos in my everyday life but the tacos are also phenomenal (it is their namesake after all). Filled to the brim with delicious meat, fresh cilantro and onion (if you choose Mexican style, which is the way to go), on perfectly moist doubled-up corn tortillas, you can not go wrong. Other pros: Friendly staff, extremely quick wait times for grub, authentic food (grew up in Los Angeles and Santa Fe, and this place could actually hang there), tasty "fast-food" style horchata, open till at least 2 AM EVERY NIGHT! Don't expect: Vegetarian options, "foodie" questions to be understood (hey man, where is your meat sourced from?), "nice ambience", also, I cannot speak for the quality of their food truck as I have only eaten at the restaurant proper. Moral of the story: Go to Taco Taxi. Enjoy delicious food.

I like to lovingly call my neighborhood the barrio because of all the businesses on Lake Street, like this place :). I had always seen the yellow and white taco trucks and walked past this place all the time but never had the guts to go in alone until the other day. A friend and I had a snack attack around 10pm and decided to check the place out because it was one of few things open around the neighborhood. You could call this a "hole in the wall," but it's pretty clean and simple. Nothing really fancy about the interior, just something you'd expect at a fast food place. It's definitely a place you'd go with 2-3 friends but no more than that. The workers all have uniforms and are pretty friendly. I was surprised to see the place poppin at 10pm (well, it was a Saturday night lol). My friend and I shared a veggie bean burrito (we hoped there was no lard lol in anything), an horchata, and those crispy pinwheels. We didn't have to wait long for our food, and it was delicious! The horchata and burrito is something I'd definitely go back for again and crave on occasion. I wished we were given more lime and radishes on the side, but I am sure if I had asked, we would have gotten some. Menu looks pretty authentic and doesn't seem fast food junky in anyway. They have quesadillas, tacos, traditional stews, and sopes. A lot the dishes are meat heavy, but vegetarians could easily find something. I am definitely coming back to this place. I like living in the barrio :P

I got a steak burrito here in the fall of 2014, and there was gravel/small rocks in it. Perhaps from the rice or something to do with the meat? I tried to call for a refund, but got nowhere on that. Done with this place.

I quite liked Taco Taxi. The bright interior is festive and fun. I had two carne asada tacos and they were tasty. Fresh cilantro and salsa gave it a kick. The beans were good, but I've had better rice. I compare everything to my grandma's so nothing's ever quite as good. The staff were friendly enough and the food came out plenty quick. I'm looking forward to trying the other restaurants along Lake Street.

I've been reading about how good Taco Taxi is, and I finally got to experience it. My problem when I was there is that I personally haven't spent too much time around Spanish and true Mexican food, so I was slightly confused as what to eat. I played it safe and just ordered tacos. Next time, I won't be so caught off guard and read more reviews for research so I can order more stuff. Anywho, the place has no ambience but I've never cared that much for ambience. I'm all about the food. The mexican-style tacos I got were delish! The ingredients were super fresh and tasted oh-so-good in my mouth. Not to mention I only spent a few dollars. I don't think I can ever be satisfied eating American-style tacos again. Cheap but good food is always going to top my list!

I went here today for lunch, with two friends. I got the carnitas tacos and one friend got a burrito; the other friend only wanted a side of refritos and rice. It isn't service, exactly. I mean, not *table* service. They call you up to the counter when your food is done, but you take it back to your table. That being said, the people were friendly and helpful. My tacos were great! They asked if I wanted them American or Mexican style; Mexican style has cilantro. (I like cilantro, so I got Mexican style.) The carnitas was tender and juicy and they provided lime wedges to squeeze onto the tacos. My friend who got the burrito could not stop talking about how amazing it was. He was stunned and all atwitter and said he wanted to bring his wife and kids back for dinner. It was a big burrito, too-- I think two ordinary people could probably share one, if they wished. It's not a fancy place, but the food is good and I will be back.

Yum!! Let me start by saying, I was not drunk (like I am sure many people are when they come here since they are open until 2 am) when I ate here and I still thought the food was AMAZING! We ordered all different kinds of tacos and by this I mean, various different meats. Yes people, you get to pick your meat from this list of about ten different kinds, including goat and tongue, if those kinds of meats turn you on. We had steak, carne asada, various kinds of pork, and tongue. Everyone was pleased with their scrumptious corn tortillas filled and I mean filled (I have never had tacos with this much meat before), add fresh cilantro and onions to that glorious meat and you have pure heaven. It doesn't stop there, they give you limes, fresh radish, a grilled pepper, and a side of red sauce. Also, and I didn't know this when ordering, the sopas are always 2 for 1. The sopas were perfect. They were hot and a little crunchy, with your choice again, of the ten meats, add sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, and I think beans, and a plate of these for $3.75 is all anyone needs!! Prices? For 6 tacos, 2 sopas, 2 jarales, and a diet coke, total was $21.00. I will be back!!!

Now this is authentic. I literally stumbled upon this place while walking around with my friend, in a haze, after getting a tattoo done in the area. We laughed upon approaching, thinking that this place could not possibly be sanitary. And while it is slightly dingy, it's worth your time. Inexpensive tacos with generous portions of beans and rice. Cola in the bottle, too! Large selection of meat types to go into your taco if you're into the fleshy stuff. Stop by if you're in the area. They are open until 2am I believe, and this would be great after-bar food. The unique aspect is that it's not only good while intoxicated like other places one would suggest dining after a night of liquor-infused madness.

Oh, Taco Taxi, how I wanted to love you. You are so cute, so cheap, and so close to my house. But what a mess. First off, I'd like to say that the customer service at Taco Taxi is not a problem - the front lady was extremely nice, and our food came out quickly and was packed nicely to go. They also were generous with the salsa cups and limes and radishes to accompany our food. Which brings me to the big problem... The food is terribly bland. When you order cabeza tacos and al pastor tacos and you can't tell which one is which, you have a problem. The taco meat was seemingly cooked alright, but bland as all get out and just kind of.. meh. On Lake Street I think you have to do a bit better than that. And my chicken torta. Oh, sad little chicken torta that I wanted to love. Pretty much only contained weirdly chopped and shredded chicken that was on the tough side with flavorless beans, sloppy lettuce, a few onions and cilantro bits, and... wait, was that really it? Who's ever heard of a torta not oozing with avocado and tomato and crema? I mean, I know it was only in the 6 - 7 dollar range as opposed to the 7 - 9 dollar range for a Manny's or an Ocampo, but.. beans, weird chicken and lettuce? That does not a torta make. I would have happily paid for the right stuff. There have been a lot of positive reviews for Taco Taxi, so maybe we caught them on a bad night. But I'm not spending any more cash there to find out...

I was out and about in that neighborhood for my yearly dose of environmental re-education at the May Day Parade and I was hit by a need for street food. I walked up to Lake and found Taco Taxi. Now, I have many weaknesses and tacos happen to be among them. You add cheap, glass bottle coke and squirt of lime to that equation and we have eternal bliss. So that's really all I was looking for and they succeeded. They do however have a full line of Mexican culinary goodness including burritos, tortas, sopas and all the rest. My friend tried the torta and was not let down. So next time you are around Lake and Cedar grab some tacos and glass bottle coke and remember to recycle that bottle.

I'm not feeling it. I had some veggie tacos here, but was unimpressed, especially compared to what you can get at Pineda Tacos (or even Chipotle, for that matter). For one thing, Taco Taxi doesn't have avocado. What?! A Mexican restaurant without avocado is simply absurd. Moreover, for vegans, avocado becomes the center point of a Mexican meal (unless you can find a place with tofu or seitan or mock chicken, but that almost never happens). Second, the salsa they gave me wasn't good. It was too liquid-y and had almost no zing to it. Third, the cashier couldn't answer my questions about the ingredients (i.e. are the beans cooked in lard? is the rice cooked in chicken broth?), even though I asked in Spanish. And my Spanish is pretty good. The cashier simply didn't know any details about the food they serve, which is always worrisome. Fourth, there's no explicitly vegetarian food on the menu, which is always a hassle, as it means you have to ask a million questions and get something constructed from scratch for you. Also, the place seems heavy on the use of sour cream and cheese, which hints at a lack of sophistication in their cooking style. I like that Taco Taxi is open late. Otherwise, I'd rather go to Pineda Tacos down the road.

I am so happy that we came here on the taco crawl! I don't know that I would have ever stopped in otherwise. What a shame that would have been. The space is nothing fancy. It is a counter and a few Formica tables. The food is inexpensive and fantastic though! I went with Ashley F's recommendation for sopes con pollo (yes, I realize it was a "taco" crawl). So yummy! The sopes were nice and fresh. The chicken was tender and nicely seasoned. Lettuce, tomato, sour cream, onions and the tastiest salsa topped it off. Two of them were under $4. Deal of the day! I agree with Sarah P, I wish there was beer but I guess that can be fixed by utilizing the "taxi" part of the establishment. I just don't know how I could eat $15 worth!

These might have been top drunk tacos all time - hit the spot that night. The carnitas tacos had a comforting greasiness to them and just were solid all-around. The Sopes were giant and did the trick. I appreciate the authenticity: all corn tortillas (duh), served with a side of radishes and limes, and you can even ask for grilled scallions and jalapenos on the side. I still don't understand the name... Why Taco Taxi? Word on the street is that they have a very accommodating bathroom....

I'm from Los Angeles, where no matter where you are, you are five minutes away from a hole in the wall taco stand that serves quality, flavorful food quickly and cheaply. When I moved to MPLS, I quickly learned that such places are hard to come by and drove around testing out most of the stands and restaurants the Twin Cities has to offer. Taco Taxi offers the definitive LA taco stand experience in a convenient location at very competitive prices. Taco Taxi is not a glamorous restaurant. Its a open kitchen, six wobbly tables and chairs, and a TV in the corner playing telenovellas. EXACTLY how it should be. The cabeza and asada are delicious, though the carnitas is a bit underwhelming. I liked the salsa roja which pairs well with the asada. I wish they served lengua and suadero, but hey. Bottom line: Restaurants like Taco Taxi are not common in Minneapolis. Not only is this one of the few places you grab authentic Mexican grub, it is one of the best.

This may not be the most helpful review, as I only tried Taco Taxi at their food tent at Twin Cities Pride last weekend, but wow, was it a great burrito. I chose the steak burrito which came with rice, refried beans, onions and cilantro on it. That's it. Very authentic, absolutely delicious, and very, very filling. After that experience, I will certainly be stopping by the actual restaurant.

If I had come to Taco Taxi on its own, instead of as part of the 2012 Taco Crawl, I probably would have rated it much higher. Unfortunately, I don't think it can really stand up to the better, more flavorful options at the nearby Mercado Central. The tacos we ordered (one carnitas and one al pastor) were good, but nothing to sing about. The toppings were good, but the meat was fairly bland. I guess I should have tried the sopes that everyone else raves about, and I probably will do so at the next Crawl. Based on my experience this time, however, I likely won't make it back to Taco Taxi until then.

I like to think of myself as a bit of a taco connoisseur so forgive me if I come across like a tacodickhole... I've had incredibly mixed experiences here but the last one was pretty bad. The cabeza was a 4/5. It had OK flavor but one of the 2 was 60% onion and cilantro. Weak. For me good carnitas can fix any problem a place has. Unfortunately it did the opposite here. The meat was terribly dry and flavorless. Their salsa is pretty alright but when its the only flavor you taste its no good. The rice just plain sucked. Some of it was only half done and again, had no flavor at all. The beans were full of flavor.... the flavor of salt. Saltiest beans I've EVER had anywhere in the world. Generic canned beans would've been better... The place still gets 3 stars based on the fact that its tacos. Let's face it, even the worst taco is still better than the best slice of pizza... long live the taco, death to traitors

I'm not typically one for Mexican food but I went here after a few drinks and was pretty drunk. I got an assortment of Tacos, you have your option of many types of meat. I have a strong tolerance for spice and if you don't this is not the place for you. My mouth was on fire with a burning sensation like no other. The meat is moist and delicious and well prepared. The staff is friendly and prompt and this has to be the cleanest eatery on Lake Street. I go back regularly especially as an after bar and have yet to leave unhappy. They don't have a public bathroom but let me use the one in the back and I went through the kitchen and this place is immaculate. It made me feel very good about eating here.

cheap and abundant flavor. Tacos! Sopes! I can only imagine how good this would be drunk. Crazy mexican soap operas on the tele, and bags and bags of fried pig skin for like 2 bucks. It was really nice and warm in there too. Nothing worse than freezing your chicharones off while eating, right?

I happened upon this treasure on my way to Ingebretsons with the intention of getting a lefse turner. The sign caught my eye and I decided to check it out. So glad I did. I had a tripa, lengua, and an al pastor. They were all delicious, but I was surprised as how much I liked the tripa, which I tried at the suggestion of a guy eating there. By the tine I finished eating I was so busy texting my friends about my awesome meal that I completely forgot about my original mission. Never did make it down the road to Ingebretson's. I probably would have hated making lefse anyway.

I am a fan and it was delicious. I just stopped by and enjoyed some real corn tacos (sorry taco bell). Carnitas, cilantro, lime, radish and some tasty salsa... I'm in heaven!

(huh)

In fact. . .I kind of want a chicken burrito right now. . . . Go there!

It's no-frills, but no-nonsense. The people there are fast and friendly, and the food is cheap and delicious. I've been going there for years, and I have nothing to complain about. It's great when I'm hungry at 1am.

Authentic Mexican tacos. Open till 2am almost every night. Perfect for the drunk munchies that you are having. Have horchatas too!!!! I go often just because it's that good. Don't give chipotle the business because these guys do it way better!

The sopes here were pretty amazing, and the food is very decently priced. I like that it came with additional corn tortillas with meat, but the meat on the corn tortillas was a little too fatty or stewed until it was too soft. Be careful, if you need to use your card, there's a $15 minimum.

Very delicious traditional Mexican tacos. Very friendly service and while its not the most elegant place ever it is very good!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
