pretty great place. cozy atmosphere. The owners seem lovely and the coffee is good. the tea selection is not too great but otherwise its nice. I made the mistake of coming with a friend to try to work on a sunday and there were kids EVERYWHERE. lol. but its probably great for families. When I visited during less busy hours it seems more pleasant but i do love it overall!

Wasn't thrilled with the previous incarnation but headed back due to a weekly meetup group and wow, it's totally different with the renovation. The space on the corner is big and has a much improved ambiance while the kid section is separate and around the corner for a buffer zone. Still not the greatest lattes in town, but the food is really good and cheap. The spinach cheese pie is good and the zucchini bread was yummy and both are really filling. I'm guessing the owner is Turkish due to the prevalence of Mediterranean food including Turkish potato salad which I'm going try one of these days. I noticed it was sitting adjacent to the Greek potato salad, and peacefully I might add. At one point there were conversations in English, Spanish, and Arabic occurring simultaneously around me, and being able to understand all three my brain broke (temporarily thankfully) from a linguistic overload. Any place where that can happen is A-OK in my book.

Great coffee, great food, and a play room with a welcoming atmosphere. This place is awesome. Today was our first visit, we'll definitely be back.

Amazing place to take toddlers with a buddy and have a cup of coffee. Baked goods are also delicious. If you are not a fan of children you should steer clear of this joint. It's geared for peeps with chicklets.

Sovereign Grounds is a convenient place to go for the residents that live in this pocket of S Mpls. The coffee is great and they have a wide variety of baked items (you have to try the lemon bread) that they bake in-store. There's always a hum of activity here, for those that need to work on their computers with some noise. People coming in and out, especially with kids. This is an important feature of this spot: it comes off as a daycare with all the little kids running in and out of the play room that they have for parents with tots. It's not unbearably loud or crowded, besides, I personally enjoy kids. On a slightly negative note: some of the tables are perpetually covered with crumbs from the kids and the parents and workers don't seem to take the time to clean them ever. There's a $5 minimum on card purchases and the Wifi is pretty slow. It works, just don't expect to be able to stream videos.

I have no idea what was going on here. When I walked through the front door, did I step into a coffee shop or fall through a portal into the Twilight Zone? Kanye West's "Flashing Lights" was blaring; there was an entire room on the right for kids that rivaled a McDonald's play pen section; an elderly, downtrodden-looking man slowly emerged from the bathroom on his walker sporting a bandana and a shirt with HANDSOME RUGGED STRONG splashed across the front. There wasn't much for seating. The only thing that hinted at the place being a coffee shop was that they served coffee. I'm left to wonder whether this was the most creative drug front I've ever seen.

Love love love the remodel that Hakan of Sovereign Grounds just completed. This coffee shops has been a favorite of mine pre-remodel and now it is just BEAUTIFUL. It is a friendly neighborhood spot. Half the coffee shop is dedicated to kids. It is so nice to have a place to bring the kids where they can behave like kids. For those without children, the other half of the coffee shop is a beautiful space to sit and enjoy your coffee while having adult conversations. Hakan makes you feel special by remembering your name and is fun to chat with. Get a group of friends together and bring the kids along, it makes for a perfect morning.

Nice coffee shop. Its nothing fancy but its warm and friendly. The owner is super duper nice and friendly. His wife bakes all the bakery goods and everything is homemade. I ate some banana bread and it was really yummy. My latte was pretty good. Not so good- Not many outlets that I saw. Lots of stay at home Moms and little kids. It would be nice if they somehow could barricade the kids room from the adult part since it is a separate room but they can invade on the adult space quite easily. If you bring head sets, you will be fine which is what i will bring next time. Otherwise , be prepared to listen to small children noises and Moms seeking and giving parenting advice to one another. I will return with my headphones!

The food is great, the coffee is terrible. The playroom is great except for parents who completely disregard the no sick kids rule. Got horribly sick after being there in a room of hacking kids. It's really too bad, since it's a great concept.

This is easily my favorite neighborhood coffee spot in Minneapolis, and I don't even live in the neighborhood. The coffee is perfectly roasted in house by the owner, who is almost always the man behind the counter as well. The cafe is paired with a children's play area, so there are times that it might not be the most quiet establishment, but there is a vibrance and positive atmosphere that is lacking at almost every other coffee shop. Though it could be open a bit later, there is nothing in the food or drinks that needs to be improved. I will continue to return here again and again.

Slow down, put the book/magazine/kindle you've been dying to read in your bag, and grab a cup of coffee here. Not a cardboard cup with a sleeve, a mug. Then have a baked good-eat some carbs...they're good for you :) This coffee house is a mecca for chilling out. The coffee is amazing. Put the keurig k cup down and head over here. You'll thank me later.

Went here for the first time just now and I thought they had fresh sandwiches, ordered the turkey cheddar, gross! Old tomatoes, stale bread! 6$ for this and I'm going to throw it out because it tastes old and stale

The owner, Hakan, is a wonderful person and business owner. Since their big redo- they have more space and a better layout. It's a great place for a quick cup of Java, or a place that you can take up a table for hours chatting with a friend, and the owner will never make you feel rushed. They have a wonderful playroom for kids in the back, and the movement/realignment of things has really helped keep the noise down. Buy your coffee beans here because they are roasted here on site and they are perfect. There's really nothing bad about this place - no criticism that I could think to offer.

I live in the neighborhood and have always liked Sovereign Grounds because the owner is so friendly. They just recently expanded/remodeled and it is great. For me the only downside is that now it's super busy especially because it's such a fantastic place to bring kids to play while the adults chat and have a hip neighborhood coffee house experience. Actually I don't know why no one has done that already since it's a cool business model! Congratulations Hakan.

I am trying hard to love this place, and for the sake of my kiddo, I do. But as a coffee shop, it's weak. The espresso is expensive and weak. Anything off the standard menu (double shot Americano with just a bit of water) seems too complicated. No raw sugar, styrofoam cups, no bagels. Come for the kid time. It's awesome!

Coffee was good but the service was terrible and it got so hot inside we had to leave.

Nice coffees roasted by a pro. The Turkish roast was particularly good. Quiche was ok. Missed the big flaky crust that I love (and will kill me in the long run). Really nice atmosphere, fantastic for families.

I've been meaning to stop by for ages, since this place has quite a reputation among my mom groups/friends as a good place to meet friends with small kids. I have toddler twins, so when an old friend came to town, I suggested we meet here. This is a GENIUS idea for a coffee shop. (Ginkgo in St. Paul has a similar small play space, but it's much more limited). I was able to catch up with my friend in peace while my toddlers ran around in utter delight, playing with all the toys, "shopping" in the kitchen, pushing carts around, and reading books. They even ate a muffin and some veggie straws (they stock a ton of kid-friendly snacks and foods, which is key). I had the broccoli salad and a REALLY good ham and havarti sandwich with fresh tomatoes and some kind of wonderful spread. The ham was thick-cut and perfect. My kids tried various muffins and pastries (rhubard bars, chocolate-chip muffins, a brownie) and they were all yummy. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Some other reviewers have noted that it's noisy, and that this makes it a poor place to get work done. Well, as a college professor who does 95 percent of my work in coffee shops (see the aforementioned note about having two toddlers at home) I would kindly suggest that you find somewhere else. There are plenty of quiet-as-a-pin coffee shops that cater to adults. There are very few that cater to families with children, and they're appreciated. It's right on the website--the ethos of this place is intentionally aimed at families with children. So if that's not your thing, fine -- but it's silly to knock this place for being what it is. I wish I lived closer-- I'd be back often. As it is, it'll have to be a special occasion visit, but we'll definitely be back.

I have been here a few times as a resting point between work and another weekly obligation in the area. I hesitated to come in at first because the kid atmosphere is mentioned so often and I was picturing myself trying to relax with a coffee and a book while screaming children surrounded me! That is not the case though, the kid area is off to the side and the "adult" area is a normal cozy coffee shop (my sanity remains in check!). They have good options for cold salads, bakery items, and coffee. If you are looking for more of a meal, you may want to go elsewhere, but for coffee shop style food, its pretty good. There is one barista there who always seems a bit crabby, but maybe that's just her style, my coffee is always made well so that is what matters!

This is a very neat place. My wife and I love the kids area, as does our one year old daughter. The whole place has great charm with old tables, comfy couches, etc. The Italian soda was very tasty (I got vanilla), as were the deserts, the tomato basil soup (yum!), and the salads (our favorite being the curry salad). As with many coffee bars, I enjoyed the snacks and the drinks the most, and was "good" with the more lunch like items (sandwiches, quiche, burrito). Overall, very happy with sovereign ground!

After reading that this place is the holy grail for families with young children looking for an indoor play area and a cup of joe, my daughter and I ventured there after our morning activity. They are, indeed, very family friendly and my daughter would have played as long as I let her in the play room in the back. The owner, I assume, who helped us at the counter with a kiddo on his back (so cute), was very nice and threw together a PBJ for my daughter as that seemed to be the only thing she could imagine to eat. I had the quiche, it was pretty good. The prices weren't too high. The people were friendly. It was a good experience and we would go back.

The space and everything about the place was too cluttered ...kind of reminds me of my grandma's place! I personally go to cafes to get away from clutter...something about neat, organized spaces helps you relax or study or work better, at least for me. I would not recommend this place if you want to get work done. The children weren't very noisy in the other room when I was there, but, the young barista and his friends were having a rather loud conversation(the cafe is basically a small room). It was like sitting on the bus and having to listen to the annoying person who is talking on their cell phone and won't shut up. I had the chai tea here. It was okay but it won't bring me back here.

I'm amazed there aren't more places in S Mpls like this, where parents can let the kids roam free like wildebeests through a crazy maze of toys, while we slurp much-needed caffeine. I just wish this place was a little cleaner, and a little less jam-packed with people (in the kids room). My first time there was a Monday morning at about 11am and it was completely bonkers. We left after about ten minutes because my 2 year old was having one of those days. Another frazzled-looking mom told me it was not usually that busy, so I may try again. Also, I have never been a fan of the coffee served - and any time SG is mentioned in conversation I've heard others make similar comments. (If it wasn't rude, I'd probably bring along a latte from Sunstreet, which *does* know how to do coffee.)

Stopped in for my first time last week and was very impressed. I had a really excellent coffee and the quiche. The quiche was amazing. The atmosphere was really nice and I will definitely be back with the kids to try out the playroom.

This is still one of my favorite places to bring my kids during inclement weather. The newly remodeled playspace is large, comfortable, and has a new "shoes off" policy that will help keep it cleaner than the old space. I see new toys including a train table, bigger playhouse, caterpillar tunnel, and a play kitchen. I do miss the slide and the climbing structure. It's pretty easy to find indoor activities in Mpls, but spaces with toddlers to climb and slide inside for free are rarer. I also miss the interesting murals that covered the walls in the old space. The menu and drinks are the same as ever. Lots of little snacks and juice boxes for the kids, coffee and cake for adults. Nothing fancy and not much GF stuff, but still one of my favorite coffee shops. Hakim can always convince me to buy a pound of his Turkish Roast to take home with me.

The main focus here is the kids. Hakan really likes them, and very few cafes accommodate young children. It can get really crazy in there, especially when the weather is bad. One commenter mentioned the mess. Well, it seems that most of the parents don't clean up after their kids or don't try teaching their kids to clean up after themselves. They also let their kids beat the hell out of some of the toys. Then there are the screamers. Whether it's out of anger or fun, the parents need to teach them that this is a public place and you don't do that. The parents need to be quicker to take their kids to the bathroom or outside if they are getting too loud. Please, pay more attention to manners. Not all of us think your kids are cute. For customers who are really bothered by the kids, the back room is now available for seating. This is a neighborhood cafe, not some place trying to be trendy for the young douche-bags. Food has improved. There are now numerous good dishes to choose from. They are attempting to do more gluten-free cooking. More of the baked goods are made there. Soups are good when they're house made. They are now using Boar's Head brand meats and better bread, make smoothies and rotate items almost everyday. When I've had espresso it tastes fine, and it's cheaper than most cafes I've been to. I don't go for syrups and all of that. All of the staff may indeed need better barista training. They did drop the Hershey's syrup but the Ghiradelli syrup also has corn syrup in it, so it too is technically a candy. Why don't some of you suggest to them that they use a good powdered chocolate. For years the owners have been keeping things low-cost but hopefully they'll improve some of the ingredients.

Great place to bring kids. The play area has lots of toys. Don't eat the chicken salad though.

This guy has ran this space as a coffee shop for something like 15 or 19 years. Can't recall because as he was telling me, I was distracted by his great deal on organic (maybe fair trade) coffee; buy a pound ($12) and get a half pound free. Good brew too. The owner is the guy running the place and takes pride in his work. Nice bro.

Love this neighborhood coffee shop. Cute place, lovely owners. You feel like it's your neighborhood coffee shop when you go there and the owner knows your name and what you like to drink/eat. Great coffee beans to pick up and brew at home. I would go here more often if they had outdoor seating!!

I think it probably says something when you're not really the target audience at an establishment and you can't really do what you'd planned to do but you still come out feeling a great deal of warmth towards said place. This isn't necessarily the best place to get work done when you have a ton of work and a deadline you're freaking out about because the other half of the space is a children's play area and though it's a different room, there isn't a door (or if there is, it's left open) so you get to hear happy squeals from next door and adorable little girls randomly run into the 'adult' area to give the parents itemized proof that they are now big enough to claim rights to a whole cookie. Pretty much everyone who came in had a good chinwag with the owner and then turned around and found 1 or 2 other people they could look genuinely happy about seeing. Got me feeling like a part of a community even though I wasn't really. This is probably why I keep moving. Of course I need to talk about what I did eat since that's actually what a cafe is technically about though I personally think it's beside the point in this case. For a beverage, I just got tea and I loved that you just get a mug of hot water and then are left to your own devices with a drawer full of nearly all flavours of tea known to woman. Perfect for me as a bad decision maker as I can spend a lifetime deciding what to drink without dragging some poor barista into wasting his/her lifetime waiting for me to make up my mind. And I may not even have to make up my mind 'cause there are opps for flavour mixing, mmmmmmm ginger/lemon/strawberry. Sadly, I have to say I was not a big fan of the banana bread though that may be in part due to the fact that I recently found a recipe for ginger-banana bread and may now look upon all ginger-free banana bread with scorn. So you may not get a lot done but when you're all set to pull out your hair and are buried in charts and graph, maybe some human contact may not be such a bad thing for perspective.

The owner is the guy who takes your order! Gotta love that kind of place. Very friendly. Looks like there are plenty of regulars. It's a great place for moms with kids cuz there is a huge playroom. We got our order "to go" so I don't know if this is a good place to read a book or do some serious work. The Turkish coffee is the best and I tried both the carrot cake and the bread pudding. Moist and fresh.

If you really like good quality coffee, and a laid back , neighborhood atmosphere, this is your spot. Coffee is very good (beans roasted on site), and reasonably priced. Full Espresso menu, and a good selection of teas. They also sell beans. But, for a baked treat, go across the street to Turtle Bread. Haven't been impressed with the selection of baked goods....but I'm picky, and when I know there are Turtle Bread yummies just steps away, I'm probably not giving SG a fair shot. Pluses for super friendly service (I've only ever seen the owner, who's great), and the decor reminds me of cool college-town coffee places. Great place to bring the kids, as there's a side room with toys and books.

SG has good, inexpensive, roasted beans and good brewed coffee. The decor used to be dumpy, but it has been improved a lot. I would give another star, but I am not a fan of crying and screaming children who drift from the huge play room into the much smaller adult area. Some of the pastries are very good and cheep, such as the bread pudding and caramel rolls, when they have them. Some of the other items, such as the muffins, I don't like. The only places that one should go for espresso drinks are places that have expert baristas, which means about three places in the Twin Cities. This is not one of them.

Love the coffee, love the proprietor (super nice guy), love the yummy feta-spinach-filo thingys. I work close to here and this is definitely my coffee go-to. Skip Caribou, come here and see what quality coffee is all about. He roasts his own beans, for goodness sakes!

I LOVE this place!!! They have delicious coffee and baked goods, quiches, hummus (made by the owners) and I have peace of mind while my kids climb and crawl all over the play room. It's the best find in the cities for parents and great even when ya don't have kiddo's with ya!

  • Adam T.

Perfectly acceptable coffee place, but not enough outlets for computers, the sitting area feels a bit cramped and awkward, and definitely for young families so expect to be surrounded by toddlers running around.

Great laid back atmosphere with excellent food and coffee. Huge play area for kids and sing a longs each week.

This place is a fab alternative to the loud and impersonal Turtle Bread next door. Owner is unfailingly friendly, yes there are bonnie children in play area which keep pretentious cafe goers at bay (you know, the ones who think that public space should mimic their perfect/quiet lives), and the latte and bread pudding were smokin'. Great opp to support a family owned business and dabble in a sincere community vibe. Watch out, the coffee is extremely hot, which can burn you easily if not let to cool first.

Went here with a coupon and was thanked by the owner for purchasing it, Isn't that a novelty? Wasn't sure what to expect since it has a play area attached to it. Was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't as bad as i thought. The playground is in a separate room which keeps the kids from running between the tables. There are "kid noises' so if you are totally against hearing kids then this may not be the place for you. But if you can tone out the little chatty noises of kids having such a great time that they are actually singing about it then come here by all means. I had tea and some great banana bread that totally tasted home made. Full of real banana and chocolate chips. I asked about the banana bread and the owner said his wife had made it. Again.. what a novelty. In truth i started this review with 4 stars because if you have read my other reviews you know i am stingy. But based on my love of good service i must give this place a 5 based on the owner, Who before we left was on his way to help a little girl get something untangled from the play room.

well...I had higher expectations when I went here, people have said- he roasts on site...lets just say that anyone can roast coffee, but can they execute even a bad drink...? When I arrived I got hit in the nose not with the smell of fresh roasted coffee, but something burnt...really burnt. Bad burnt coffee smell. The owner was not in the front room, and upon looking ..the first bad sign, the portafilter ( for those non-coffee geeks thats the thingy that the espresso goes in) was not in the machine warming up. Second really really bad visual, ground coffee in filters....airing out...bad idea. Absorbs every aroma in the room, and coffee doesn't need to air out pre ground..as a matter of fact air is the worst enemy of roasted coffee..esp pre ground. Finally Mr. owner comes out. I asked for a shot of espresso ( I am not sure why I torture myself), and the owner/roaster? went over to make me one. Another bad sign, no hand tamper anywhere and site....and as I waited and listened for the magical sign of "fresh grinding" my shot of espresso, there was no sound. Pre ground again...who knows for how long??( F-)..watching the shot come out, was about 6 seconds and the bizaare part...he let it so over extract that when he then moved it to a styro cup ( another bad sign)- it was like 6 oz of dirty coffee. I looked at it, and looked at him and asked if he could remake me a shorter one, like maybe 2 oz...Nope. No chance. He said "this is the best I can do." Nope not true. He could do 10000% percent better that is what is really sad. It was not even a bad shot of espresso, it was awful. Alot of opportunity with a long time coffeehouse, a roaster on site and a neighborhood that seems to be supportive, and he is not even trying to make a slightly craft-made espresso beverage. He needs to wash the dirty plastic bins with the burnt coffee in them too. He needs to learn how to not pregrind, and to clean his espresso equipment, and to make a decent shot of espresso. Too much competition with TB across the street and MC-D's making better espresso drinks. But to tell a customer...sorry this is the best I can do..when I know thats not so...is sad. Time for the owner guy to watch Espresso 101. Sorry the coffee police gives them a F.

I'm fussy about coffee and Sovereign Grounds has excellent coffee. Add in a courteous owner who makes you feel like a family friend and a wonderful relaxed atmosphere and it doesn't get much better. I like to get coffee there and take beans home (I only drink the dark roasts so I can't speak to the lighter roasts). Only weak spot is pastries--they're pretty mediocre. But stop in for the coffee, the pleasant company and the atmosphere. Say hello to the turtle--he gets lonely.

If anyone knows good coffee you will absolutely buy it here. Starbucks et al......could learn something from these brews. Great neighborhood spot that is very underated when it comes to quality coffee.
