After a few sandwiches and entrees I can say with confidence that this place is solid. I had a BBQ chicken today for lunch and it was perfect, a huge drumstick, wing, thigh portion with nothing over or undercooked. The rice or spaghetti that comes along with it is standard Somali background fare, and the salads are just some lettuce. Like always, banana and drink included, all for $10. For their large sandwiches they will cook up fresh some chicken or fish, and I don't know what they put on them but I like it. A nice, large wheat bread roll contains it all and rounds out the assemble. I always wonder what draws certain Somali men to one Somali restaurant over another, because, pardon the pun, but all Somali food looks about the same to me. With 4 Somali restaurants on the West Bank right here. I imagine that they choose their cafe based on who they know, but really, that would be kind of prejudicial of me, assuming that because they are African everything they do is based on tribal allegiances. Probably there are subtle differences in the cuisines of each restaurant that they are drawn to, differences I am not privy to.

I confess: I had a secret agenda when I checked out Sahara some months ago. I wanted to learn how to make an awesome Somali Chai tea. Since I moved to MPLS, I've come to learn more about the East African culture and became curious about this concoction that everyone seems to be obsessed about. I decided that Sahara was the place to try it out and went there on a random weekend with some friends. When I stepped into the joint, I felt kind of out of place for a bit since my group was the only non-African people there. There wasn't a menu in sight, but the guy who helped me behind the counter was kind enough to suggest a few things to try out. I ended up ordering a basmati rice dish with lamb meat while my friends got similar combinations but with chicken and pork instead. When we were seated, we were also given a banana and a bottle water before our food came out. For someone who's not that into fruits, I was happy to have some source of non-meat in my system for once. When our entrees finally arrived, I was blown away by both the quantity and taste of the food. I totally loved my lamb since it was nicely spiced and tender that it perfectly complemented well with the aromatic basmati rice. Hate to say it, but I secretly squealed with delight after every bite. That ish was THAT good. To stick to the main agenda, we also tried a Chai tea at the place. As an added bonus, the guy who worked there also got a recipe for it! I was actually surprised he actually took the time to show me the exact ratio of what to use for each ingredient. Thank you, Mr. guy-behind-the-counter! I think I'm in love with Somali food now! Oh, and by the way, the whole bill for each person came out to be only around $8. WOW? I probably shouldn't be gloating about this on a public business review site, but I can't help but share the joy that comes from finding such a rare gem. Go there. If you're adventurous enough especially in the gastronomy department, you totally will NOT be disappointed :)

Calling all West Bankers, UMN students, Minneapolitans, greater Minnesotans... ONE review on Yelp for this place, really? Where the hell are the lines I saw all over Eat Street? They should all be in front of Sahara. Seriously, you guys. You are missing out. It's joined to a fabric store, the TV plays way too loud, there are random curtains everywhere, and schoolkids apparently use the restaurant as a hallway to get from here to there judging by how many of them are coming through with backpacks. But none of this matters one bit. I would put up with dining perched in the shovel of a dump truck as long as I got to eat this delicious goat over rice. Dude behind the counter asked if I wanted a half order or a full order. I got a half order, plus tea, for $8. When it came out (about 3 minutes later), I was like, 'who the hell is going to help me eat this?!' The dish was the size of a football, piled deep. What's a full size, then? A dodgeball? Tender goat pieces everywhere, left on the bone for maximum marrow-slurping and skin on for maximum fat-chomping, rice seasoned with caramelized onions and some magical blend of spices, a salad sitting on top all stuffed with yams, and a bowl of green sizzling hot sauce just waiting for dipping. Utensils served? A big serving spoon. Use your hands. I got every possible part of my outfit all greasy and I don't even care. For some reason, a banana came out right after I got my meal, too. Not like a fried banana or a banana in the salad or anything. It was like the guy looked at me, dwarfed by a heaping plate of goat, and thought, 'Hey, that girl doesn't have enough food, I'm going to hand her this banana.' I stuffed my face silly, nearly to the point of sickness, and only managed to demolish maybe 2/3 of the dish. The picture I posted is of MY LEFTOVERS. Yes, that mass of food you see right there is 1/3 of what I originally had. For $8. Including a big mug of tea and a random banana. What are you waiting for? This place better be on Yelp's hot list when I come back and check in a month! Or my bitter foodie self is going to be haunting the Minneapolis Yelp page in abject jealousy from California where as far as I can tell there is no Somalian food at all, let alone any this awesome.

What a lovely restaurant experience. No-nonsense decor, a sports game on the TV, and some 10 Somali men enjoying the game, each others' company, tea, and food. I was the only non-African person in the room, the only woman, too. I was treated respectfully and greeted with a friendly smile. The menu is simple, but -because of the photos - easy to read. I had ben looking forward to eating goat (which I LOVE), but learnt that they were all out of goat meat. My waiter recommended a chicken dish (chicken suqaar) which I ordered with rice and hot tea. What a treat! The turmeric-flavored basmati rice was aromatic, the chicken dish flavorful, and the hot tea to die for! I read while eating and no one tried to rush me in any way. In the end, my waiter insisted that he would not even charge me for the tea. Wow! I ended up paying $7 for a "half" plate, which as more than enough for one person. This was my first time eating Somali food (similar to Ethiopian, but ever so slightly different, too). If I were living in the Twin Cities, Sahara Restaurant would turn into a regular take-out place or an eatery to which I might take adventurous friends.

I crave goat. It happens every few months. I start searching. Goat, when prepared well, is a most amazing treat; not done well a tough, tasteless mass. Sahara know how to do it right. I got the Goat on Rice, consisting of very generous portions of beautifully seasoned rice and tender, saucy, succulent goat. Garlic, ginger, cardamom, onion, cilantro. It's all in there. Take it to go, or sit at one of the simple tables and watch the guys view soccer matches on the flatscreen while neighborhood kids file by with their school bags. Good, authentic grub.

Not very easy on the eyes, but don't let the decor deceive you; Sahara might just be the best Somali food in town. What they lack in presentation they more than make up for in taste. Staple Somali-fare all around and a cut above the rest of the competition. Fast service, affordable menu and enormous portions make Sahara the go-to sit down eatery for Somali food in the Riverside neighborhood

This is a great Somalian restaurant located in the West Bank and seemed to be near Uptown! I did not notice that the open sign light was not on at 3:30 p.m. I have yet to figure out what the restaurant hours are as they were not posted. I am assuming they are open for lunch and then closed for a while. Though the owner stays behind the cash register and the place/door is open with people wandering in and out through the front and back doors. Some appeared to be family members and other using it as a hallway to some building in the back. Even though the restaurant was closed the owner prepared food for me and my sister. The restaurant is located in a old building but do not be deceived. The food is absolutely amazing! We ordered the goat with rice. The flavor is so intense! You get a full plate of goat meat with rice (saffron and other spices) with onions, peas, corn, and raisins. Also the owner gave us a half order rather than a full order. I do not want to contemplate what a full order even looks like as the half order was a full to go box. My sister and I were only able to eat one third of our plates and took a major amount of food home for leftovers. Be warned Somalian food is very hot so it is not for the faint of heart! Also Somalians eat everything with their hands. I asked for a fork and the owner dug around under the counter for a good 10 minutes and finally produced two spoons with one napkin. I wound up eating the meat with my hands and as one other Yelper noted I got very greasy hands. If you prefer utensils the best bet is to either bring your own utensils or get it to go and use your own at home utensils. Parking was $2 on the street and in my opinion was not bad as far as parking goes.
