I really wanted to try the place after reading the reviews on yelp. We went there but unfortunately didn't end up eating there or even entering the place. On the door, they have a huge sign which says "Valid id needed to enter the place" Why do I need an id to enter a restaurant. Now I understand that this place is a bar too. But I was with my family and they are visiting me from overseas. We didn't expect to carry our passports to eat lentils at 5 pm in Minneapolis. I was not the fan of the ambiance either. So we ended up going to the Blue Nile instead.

I used to walk here with friends after classes at the U. They are nice. The staff was a little odd, but I'm sure it's because we were really noisy. They never ripped us off, which was nice.

I think this restaurant has the quality and selection which is among the best in the Twin Cities. Now remember I'm a vegetarian so I like this place a little more than the rest because the menu has a few extra items on the menu. Don't get me wrong there are others which are just as good as Red Sea but I think this place has a leg up for us vegetarian types.

The ambiance is a little weird, but the food is so outstanding, I would go just about anywhere to get it. I had 2 sit-down lunches there while training at the U and have been craving it once in a while ever since (I live in another state). Excellent food, HUGE portions. Just a food adventure, and it's great.

Two of my girlfriends and I wandered in here last night (Thursday) after having some beers at Nomad across the street. We were greeted immediately and Salomon gave us his recommendations when we told him we hadn't been there before. The three of us shared an order of veggie sambusas and the half veggie/half meat combo. It was enough food that my friend went home with leftovers for her husband, and the quality of the veggie part of the combo was excellent. I did not try the lamb or the beef. The only part of our Red Sea experience that I did not care for was the death metal concert that was going on one room over. There are no sound barriers between the dining room of the Red Sea and whatever the hell goes on next door. Never in my life have I thought to myself, "I would like to go out for African food, and also be sitting 20 feet away from the stage of a screamo concert", but to each their own. I will be back soon!

Went to see a friend play there a couple Fridays ago. Door said $5 but was charged $7? And the door guy was arguing with a lady who apparently was supposed to be the door guy? Very, very uncomfortable to have happen right in front of me. Place stunk from the bathrooms. At least the Surly was $4 (even though one of the bartenders tried to charge me $4.50??)

I'm no authority on African food but this place was really tasty. I got some meat dish which is usually served raw but I'm just not that type of girl so I had them cook mine (not being fussy it's an option on anything they traditionally serve raw). The injiera was tart and squishy and great vehicle to get my meal in my mouth. The portion size is massive. I barely ate half of what I was given, and that was after sharing bites with the table, and still had food for the next day. Like I said I'm no authority on African food but I enjoyed everything I tried here. The ambiance could use a lot of work but I, as long as the other 9 in my party, all enjoyed what we had. You're not going to hang around here for hours but you should enjoy the food.

Great customer service and food! I went with a group of 6 and we got the Tour of Ethiopia and an appetizer and it was enough food. Come hungry!

Why am I editing this review? Because I'm genuinely impressed by the new management of the Red Sea. I'm not certain if they will continue as a music venue in the evenings, but this place has better food and better customer service. The new owner's family works at the restaurant with him, and they're dishing up FRESH veggies and meat, spiced and served oh-so-much better than in the past. I would definitely recommend that you come in and try the new menu and stop in and say hi to the friendly folks here!

I dislike reading reviews on a one time bad experience however I think those reviews should be warranted. I went there for a hip-hop show last weekend, and ordered some wings I was told it would be a 5-piece but I ended up getting a 4. The wings where dry and had hot sauce on them and were very uninspirational. I talked to my server about only getting 4 wings instead of 5 and was told "Those are big wings" Never mind that I'm spending a lot of money with my friends buying drinks, If I pay for a product it's on princple I get what I paid for. Only reason I'm giving this 2 stars cause the bartender who was new was very friendly and made our drinks strong, I probably won't be going here again

In days gone by, I never thoughts too highly about Red Sea. Lately, however, Red Sea's east African food has become impressive! Everything I have ordered in my last two visits has been absolutely delicious. The catfish with shiro is simply delicious, and I am not typically a catfish fan. Whether the dishes are meat, fish, or veggie, the flavor and spice have been perfect, and the portion size has been great, and sometimes even a bit too much. I have to say that I love eating food from Red Sea and I look forward to my next opportunity.

Excellent food at a reasonable price. But charged $12 for a diet coke with rum in an 8 oz cup filled mostly with ice? Yikes.

My Foodie Buddy Rylan loves ethnic food, so he told my friend Mitch & I about this place. I saw they have "Live Music" so I asked my Buddy Bakko of "Jesus Chrysler" if he knew about this place? Bakko said "Yea we've played there a million times, it's great" So Mitch & Zack went down to check it out, and they love the place. Located on the Legendary 'West Bank' it's worth checking out. Tell 'em The ZERo Sent ya ....

went there for lunch. had sambusa's and a side salad. it was fine, but overpriced. i wouldn't go back. the online menu doesn't match the prices when you get there. on a whole, i think it's just over priced and there's better food in the neighborhood.

I am editing and condensing my review since, I only went there twice for music at bar side only. Over a year ago. One star for the bar room. Food wasn't tried. Bar service was questionable, pricing at the door was questionable. Not a dress up bar. Dive bar, I think built in bathrooms have open ceilings if I remember right. The bar had a LOT of room for improvement in proper price tactics at door and bar, and drink making. I hope they have tried to improve since then. Not sure. Had they not messed up an easy drink, regularly ignored me waiting at the bar, charged 15.00 at door on a Sunday for a mediocre local band, and had a bartender who didn't seem like he really worked there as a bartender, then I would have not reviewed it.

Red Sea offered solid, simple Ethiopian food. I enjoyed my split pea with injera dish; it was delicately spiced and tasted fresh. The portion size was large (and included two small sides of red lentils and spinach---for free, apparently) and nicely priced at $8.99. I wasn't impressed with the ambience of the place, though. If it weren't for the kindred spirits with whom I was eating, I would have found it difficult to have stayed in there for too long. For one thing, there's sickly, dark lighting with some stray bits of neon near the counter/bar. The speakers played random music and the big screen tv's glare was hard to avoid. This isn't a good place to take a date or to enjoy a pleasant dinner. I'm not sure I'd want to be there for alcoholic drinks, either. Just too bleak.

Get out your pencils, kiddos. It's math time! Two (2) attractive young people arrive at a bar for a musical show played by four (4) of their friends and totaling one and a half (1.5) hours. They are charged five (5) dollars cover each, five (5) dollars for each mixed rail drink arriving in plastic eight (seriously, 8) ounce cups, and two fifty (2.50) for every tap beer arriving in plastic twelve (12) ounce cups. They drink many of these (~1000), despite the figures above. Why does the band only receive six (6) dollars total for its efforts? Don't forget to show your work.

This place has done a 180 turnaround since my last venture to this establishment back in 2005. The lighting, sound system and stage has been updated, turning the music room into a very attractive venue. I remember defining the lighting as "sexy". I have been told the sound man took over and sunk a lot of money into the renovations. They also had a pretty rad happy hour with bottle beers at $2.00 until 9:00pm from what I could recall. Two buck Dos Equis is always a plus in my book. I have been told however, that the mixed drinks can be shady and expensive, but as a beer guy this does not concern me. I say to bands and patrons alike, give the Red Sea one more chance.

My wife & I are in town for 5 days to see her best friend who lives up here. Her bff said this was cool club with good food & music. HA! This is good if no one has ever eaten or listened to a cool musical act in NYC or Austin TX. The place has a weird vibe & the performer tonight was some guy with a weakass girl voice trying to be the folk version of Tom Petty or something. Whats worse he had 2 back up singers, his grandfather & his brother who had the the worst voice & was off key besides. Our food took forever & was pretty bland and tasteless although they give you a ton. A ton of tasteless slop. Oh yum. My wife & I know both know good African Food & this is NOT it. My wife actually started to feel sick and we left 1/2 hour ago. Luckily our friend lives close by. Wish I could get the sound of screeching singer out of head. This place is an overrated, overpriced shitbox.

I went here for the second time today, first time eating the food. It's not Fasika good, but the presentation was beautiful, the waitress was very sweet and I LOVE the little appetizer they give of injera and lentils! I can't help but give them a 5!

I went there for a comedy show (with my mom on a whim) that will apparently will be occurring every other Thursday. I feel as though this place might be a little misleading. It looks like a divey joint, and it kind of is. But I can't say I've ever had a bad time there. The service was a little slow on the drinks, it was 2-4-1's and we started by getting pint glasses then as the night progressed the drinks came in plastic cups, and then the glasses again...it was weird. We ordered chicken wings at the bar, they were delivered to the other side by a very nice waitress. The wings? They were plentiful and DELICIOUS! Later I went back to the bar for one last drink to make the comedy funnier and an angry drunk stumbled in, the bartender dispatched him before he barely had a chance to say anything. Also, the bartender was a older and flirty, but not in a creepy drink sprinkley sort of way, but cute. All in all, this place is worth hitting up, and the comedy night isn't that bad, they have the full range of acts, first timers and paid performers. Go on a Thursday, its a good time!

This casual little hole in the wall is a good place for an ethiopian food adventure- lots of really interesting, spicy dishes served with a wonderful sourdough-like flatbread called injera. If eating spicy food with bare hands is a turn-on for you, head here with an an open-minded date. This little restaurant is linked to a bar and music venue next door. A neat history lesson on the Ethiopian roots of rastafarian religion and music.

I've only been here a couple times. I won't go back though. The drink prices are actually pretty good and there are some (usually) pretty good vibes from the people here too! The food is decent, but is a shitty place to play shows. I've had some friends play some shows here though, and completely got screwed over when it came to promotions and pay out at the end of the night. The guy dealing with all that was pretty shaddy, then we go on to find out some pretty messed up shit about him.. Regardless though, this bar is pretty OK. I can't talk bad about that at all, but watch out if you are playing shows!

A solid place to see live music, the bar is alright, and the restaurant side has some very good "lamb tibs" were solid w/ jalapeño and a flat bread "plate". The decor is rather stark but you're in & you're out, so not a deal breaker in terms of checking it out.

Thank goodness we had a coupon. Lamb is chewy and no flavor. Curried chicken just OK. Service is awful.
