My first time back since they closed to rebuild/remodel and I was a little disappointed. It has about the same charm as walking into the DMV and no salsa bar anymore. The previous space had a really cool salsa bar with quite the variety of things you could help yourself to. The food tastes about the same as I remember. This use to be at least a four star place until they got all DMV and took away the salsa bar.

There may be a bit of a language barrier, but don't let that scare you away from enjoying some damn fine tacos and burritos. Service was quick and there were no problems with the order. The chicken in green sauce had a nice but low level of heat to it while the tomatillos added a nice zing. The chicken in chipotle had a wonderful smoky taste backing up a slightly higher burn level. The pork in spicy sauce likewise had a wonderful depth of flavor and heat. The rice was pretty much what you would expect and the refried bean while good were not as good as at the Plymouth location. If you are a regular at the Pineda in Plymouth, as I am, be aware that the menu board is a bit different but with a little search you will find your favorite combos. Next time I will have to try the combo that includes a tamal, as the Plymouth location does not have tamales.

Good food and i like that it isn't a sparkling clean place. It shows that they have good food and put more effort in taste than aesthetics. In my opinion this is a great place on Lake for authentic Mexican food. That alone is a big statement. I like their variety as well they have a great selection of food! Great place

Food's very good. Service at the cash register is difficult. As an English speaker, I have better luck communicating with the guys doing the cooking who seem to only speak Spanish than I do figuring out what the cash register person is doing -- who generally speaks English. I order the same thing. Something gets run up on the cash register. It's usually never what I paid last time. If I get guacamole, it may or may not come with chips. When I don't get chips with the guac, I'll point out that I need chips, and that I got them last time. This usually results in an icy stare, and the explanation that they have NEVER given chips with guacamole. I can't believe little bags of chips are all that costly. It might be good policy just to give them with the guacamole, if it's going to make one's customers happy. The pricing on the food is confusing. If you're going to get chips and a drink, then you know what your plate of food is going to cost. If you don't want the drink, you have no idea. Am I still paying for the drink even if I'm not getting it? Hard to say. These things often make us skip Pineda, even though the food is good. It's just hard to get what you're trying to order. That said, given the choice, I'd skip Chipotle and go here instead. I just don't want to have to deal with the person who's running the cash register.

Based upon how others reviewed the tacos here, I have to wonder if we have even eaten at the same place? Far from being some I'd the best tacos in MSP, I found the Al Pastor tacos rather dry and the Asada was a mess of pale gray flavorless meat. Tortillas were fresh and the salsas were fine, but the meats were just plain lousy. Lots of other spots on Lake Street for authentic and tasty tacos.

Better than Chiptotle, better than Baja Sol. Yum yum yum.

The one in Plymouth IS Great! (In answer to my earlier question). Much nicer inside...still a wonderful salsa bar. Owner, Oscar, will go to the moon to make you happy. I had them cater 2 parties this year and both went fabulously. Rock on Pineda!!

Ugh. Yelpers, I am just dissapointed with you. You constantly complain that you went to some chain resturant and it wasn't "real mexican." Well what the hell do you expect? Of course you aren't going to find real Mexican food at Chevy's Fresh Mex. Where can you find it? Hmm. How about a place that is actually...Mexican? Pineda is now clean, white and very hygenic looking. I kind of miss the old dirty ex-Pizza Hut, but I am just happy to be able to order my steak tacos again the way they should be; steak, cilantro, onion & hot sauce, on a tiny little corn torilla. The burritos are equal to about 3 meals worth of food, so I think the price (less than $6) is a steal. They also serve breakfast for super cheap.

I call this place "The Non-American Mexican Chipotle". I compare it to Chipotle for the way you can customize your food...but it is NOTHING LIKE Chipotle when it comes to flavor, authenticity, and well...deliciousness. The menu offers options for great Mexican food and the food is great and cheap. I usually go there when I am leaving the Farmer's Market across the street. Great steak, onion, and cilantro tacos with great flavor.

RIP to the smaller Pineda taco location closer to 35W on Lake. After moving from Los Angeles to Minneapolis in 09, I scoured the town for good tacos and burritos. They don't really exist here. The tiny run down Pineda that closed was the closest thing I found and the day I found it was one of the best days of my life. So sad to see it go :(.... I'm pretty sure some of the cooks moved over to this location. I wish i could figure out why the food doesn't stack up. All that said, this place is still better than most mexican food in the Twin Cities.

My hubby's obsession in life is to find cheap, yummy Mexican food. This place fits the bill! I'm a taco girl while the hubby usually goes for the burrito. We are big fans of the carnitas tacos--I do just cilantro & onion while he does the traditional cheese, tomato, etc. toppings. My only complaint is that their combo with chips & a drink is literally Lays chips, Sun chips, or Cheetos. WTF? A good Mexican meal isn't complete without greasy tortilla chips & salsa, which you have to purchase separately. Aside from that, this place is delish & will become a regular in our rotation.

Prepare for obesity. The food is so good. The spiciness is actually spicy. I ordered the spiciest burrito with their spiciest sauce (much to the surprise of the guys behind the counter) and my esophagus will never be the same. I have no idea what the tiger burrito is, but I get it every time. It's $5 for a burrito, plus chips and a soda. Not sure what makes it different from a regular burrito, and I can't find it on the menu, but I swear it exists...

Rating is for tacos only. Superb tacos - my new favorite, edging out La Hacienda and Los Ocampo. I'm constantly longing for something like the plethora of taco places in SF and LA (not to mention time I've spent in DF and elsewhere in the taco homeland) and Pineda ranks right up with the best of them. Ordered tacos de tripa and tacos de buche. Tacos are meant to be a masterpiece of simplicity, a showcase for delicious meat. This is exactly what Pineda does best. Tripa and buche were served on simple small corn tortillas, garnished with onions and cilantro. I asked for a bit of Salsa Verde on the side (which was excellent and packed with chile flavor). Buche - to me the king of taco meats - melted once it hit my lips, full of luscious and very fresh meaty flavor - perfectly executed. Just a bit of carmelization on the edges from the seconds it spent on the grill. Tripas - outstanding, maybe even better than the buche. Full-force maillard effect on all sides, a sign of a master on the grill. No off flavors. Fresh, meat-filled mouthfulls, soft and falling apart at each bite.

Pineda Tacos is different enough from every other taqueria on Lake Street which makes my taco-loving self happy. Like others have mentioned, it's a choose-your-own-adventure of taco/burrito/quesedilla making pleasure. Want crema, lettuce, onions and a wee bit of cheese on your carnitas tacos (like I do)? You got it, dude. And those carnitas are exactly what I aim to slow-cook my pork to, but inevitably fail. I couldn't figure out a way to just order tacos, so I got the plate with beans, rice and a side of chips and salsa; all forgettable. Atmosphere? What's that? I was a little skeeved out by the dirtiness of the dining room, but ended up taking my delicious food to-go and problems was solved.

After protesting for five hours or so, which consisted of walking from East Lake and Hiawatha to Augsburg and back, I worked up a monster appetite. Luckily, I found Pineda Tacos not too far away from where I parked, on my walk to the protest rally point. The menu is pretty disorganized, and, I couldn't for the life of me find any menu item with the word "taco" in it. (Perhaps, I was really tired.) Anyways, I was about to utter "dos tacos al pastor y carnitas" to the staff member behind the counter, until I saw this sheet of paper taped on the wall that said "carnitas special." So I ordered that and a torta milanesa for my boo, too. #impulsivebuysarethebestbuys I got my number, sat down in one of the booths, and only waited for about five minutes before I got my order. Carnitas Special: Not sure how long this baby is around, but for the most part, it's delicious. I'm not sure what cut of beef they used for this plate, but it's topped with some caramelized onions and complemented with refried beans and orange rice. I wish the carnitas were more tender and broken apart, but it didn't make it any less delicious! (Especially with the spicy verde sauce.) Eventually, after my plastic knife failed to cut this sucker, I cave-manned this hunk of beef aka ripped it to shreds with my own two hands. #sorrynotsorry #icarrysanitizer Torta Milanesa: I swear I planned on giving my girl the torta, but after I learned that she had eaten dinner after a quick chat on the phone and my belly still grumbled, I devoured this thang, too. With fluffy bread, tasty guac, ooh good lawd, I couldn't help but smile from the tastiness. Overall, I would totally return to Pineda Tacos (on a non-protest day) to get my Mexican food fill. However, it's slightly a notch below some other taquerias I've eaten at.

First time here. Ordered à chicken mole takeout burrito. Burritos are on sale now in January 2015 for $4.99. Not réal favorable even burrito maker reheated chicken mole meat in the microwave in styropfoam no less. The burrito maker puts tortilla on a hot grill which is neat. Added lettuce, sliced not cut up tomatoes, salsa, little bit of cheese, Rice and refried beans. Good value for your money. Filled me up.

The food was excellent, but my family of four all had stomach issues later that night. We're in no hurry to try it again.

0 stars for ambiance - high school cafeterias are more charming. 0 stars for service - there isnt any and it would be easier to find someone who speaks English in Mexico than here. And 0 stars for presentation. 1000 stars for the food. Oh. My. God. Absolutely DELICIOUS off-the-charts good food. Easily the best Mexican I've ever had, possibly the best food of any kind I've ever eaten. What you get at Pineda Tacos is hard-working, happy, smiling people cooking up bold, fresh and rich flavors into what i can only describe as tex-mex perfection. Do yourself a favor and skip the overpriced, bland wannabe "chefy" food at Rosa Mexicano, skip the assembly line garbage at Chipotle and skip on over to lake street for authentic awesome. (See picture for my favorite - get it with the Chipotle chicken.)

Great place with great food. The staff is always very helpful and is happy to make a recommendation. I've tried everything from the tacos to the burritos to the tortas and they all have been very satisfying. A must during a quick lunch break. ¡buen provecho!

Stopped in here for the first time on Friday night based on good word of mouth from friends and the close proximity to our house. We ordered the chicken enchiladas combo and taco salad combo. Food was pretty good, but the restaurant was FILTHY. Like, "this tastes good but I'm sure I'm going to become violently ill in the next 12 hours" filthy. The salsa bar was particularly suspect and looked like it had been set out the previous day. Lots of fruit flies everywhere. In that regard, hell yeah it's authentic Mexican. ;p Neither one of us ended up getting sick, other than some wicked acid reflux. I'd probably give it another shot - I only saw three employees, two making the food and one running the cash register, and there was a consistent line, so perhaps they were just short-staffed on this particular day and maybe we'd just come in after a big dinner rush or something.

I love this place, lots of menu items, very authentic! They even have real Mexican Coke made with real sugar. My favorite new burrito place.

Large portions, reasonable prices, questionable cleanliness. Pretty straightforward Tex Mex.

Tasty, tasty, tasty. Good quality ingredients. I have eaten at the one in WSP, and the one closer to 35 and have not had a bad meal. I usually get a burrito, the GF likes their chimichangas. Al Pastor Tacos...yum. Prices have crept up slightly in the past couple of years, but they have everywhere so no biggie. Get the Super Burrito- my Hispanic former co-worker calls it the Mexican Foot Long. Think 2 Chipolte burritos rolled together, length-wise. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Or someone a far distance from the rest room a few hours later..........

My family and I always judge the quality of a Mexican joint by the quality of the rice. This place had some great rice. Look folks. Looking for something "authentic" is just silly so lets just cut that out from the standard. Mexico is a dynamic culinary powerhouse with an incredible mosaic of spice, stews and technique that gets hobbled together to fit a US palette and in this case a milder midwest one. That said, this place reminded me of my favorite taquerias in my native Los Angeles. The dudes behind the counter and I had a fun back and forth in Spanish. The salsas had just a bit of bite enough to let me know it wasn't pulled out of a can. The televisions were happily set to Univision and the misspelling on the flyers warning against "Outter" foods whisked me away to spots in LA force fed gentrification and struggling to accommodate the newly minted english speaking communities. As a warning the plates are big. I got a forearm sized burritos and my pal got the combo plate. We were not close to finishing.

Dear Minneapolis: This is the kind of place Chipotle got their concept from, not the other way around. Now that that's out of the way: Tongue F yeah. This place is amazing. I haven't eaten tongue since I was so young a kid it didn't gross me out, and it was kosher deli sliced up tongue then. I figured I'd take the plunge on the lengua. I am so glad I did. Other meats less challenging are awesome. Chicken salsa verde with a few potatoes in it - my other favorite. This is one of those cheap ass gems I'm in love with. I never get the MSG palpitations and dry mouth here like I do most mexican spots - this is food made like someone's mom made it. My friend got a mediocre torta. I'm a stickler for "if it's in the name of the place, stick with the program" so I get three tacos, cilantro, onion, salsa on the side the way God intended. Recommend highly. They charge for pico, which isn't worth it, but not for the hot or green. Watch out, because if you order the pico and you use a card and don't have cash, the ladies behind the counter are SERIOUS about getting that fifty cents whatever. Blah. No star deduction because it's THAT good.

I would go to this place over chipotle anyday. It's authentic amazingly delicious Mexican food served cheap and fast. Try the number 12 I think , it's a big mix of everything a taco enchilada and a tamale with rice and beans.

Love the spicy chicken! I've had tacos and a chimi from Pineda and I've never been disappointed yet. The burritos/chimis are huge. The quac is really good, it's got a little kick to it.

I have been eyeing this place since I moved into my new condo a couple of months ago. Today I decided to venture over and check it out and I'm glad I did! I ordered the #1 combo (Might as well start at the beginning of the menu on the first trip, eh?) and got the burrito combo. I chose the Mexican steak for the filling and told the cashier to put everything on it. The burrito was tasty, the tortilla was fresh and the portion was big. I was amused that the menu board shows the combo coming with a Pepsi but the soda machine was Coke, it added a bit of "we're serving food and not atmosphere" to the place and I loved it! I'll be back, both because it's near and because it's good. Hope to see you there!

Food: Good meats, well cooked and spiced. The tortillas were not fresh pressed, but precooked, and warmed up...The tacos I had tasted great though (I had pork, my fiance had steak). You get chips with each meal (no salsa, which we'll get into later), but they were stale and inedible. Atmosphere: What atmosphere? We don't need no stinking atmosphere. Bright yellow walls and the radio was on. Place seemed thrown together and kind of desolate. Pricing: Food pricing was a bit high for what you get. One thing that really peeved me was that salsa was extra. Let me say that again, SALSA was extra at a MEXICAN restaurant. That's like charging for ketchup at McDonalds; and for that reason, I will not go back on general principle.

Best burritos in MN! All the ingredients are super fresh and tasty. Plus they give you huge portions for cheap prices. You would be a fool to eat chipotle after trying Pinedas! The eating area is usually pretty clean. Some of the employees are a lil stingy with the portions but most will hook you up! I suggest any of the chicken meats but beware the spicy chicken is just that! The steak is always very tasty. Go earlier in the day for the freshest stuff and loosen your belt!

The red glow from the Pineda Tacos sign across Lake street taunts me after I get out of the gym on the weekends. It says to me, "You can come and eat an entire burrito now that you've worked out. You made more room!" I have given in only a handful of times but I was never disappointed. The burritos are huge and they set it up sort of like a sandwich station where you can see all the possible meats and veg fillings for your burrito and you slide along the counter pointing at things until you are satisfied with the mix. I have only had vegetarian burritos there but I was impressed that they actually had special ingredients for me--not just the usual beans and rice. For vegetarian burritos they cut a huge hunk of cheese (oaxaca?) from a block and put it in your tortilla on the flat iron until it gets all ooey and gooey before they send you down the line. So delightfully melty it makes you forget about your hardening arteries! They dont include chips and salsa/guacamole as part of the burrito price so I took away one star. The other star is gone because two times I got a stale tortilla. I could tell because although they grilled it, the tortilla-elasticity was no longer fresh and my burrito busted a leak halfway through. That's the worst!

The new location in the strip mall has a clean, almost sterile feeling. No character. Other than that its an allright place to grab a bite. I had the tacos al pastor, and what was most disappointing was there was no pina in sight. Tacos al pastor just isn't the same without a few slices of pinapple on it. I think the best thing about Pineda is how all the ingredients are laid out in front of you. Kinda like a "subway". Its a great way to see your options before you order. I will return to Pineda, but only if Taco Taxi is closed....

This place is minorly sketchy. I was a little nervous because it had kind of a funky smell, but everything turned out be great. The burritos are HUGE. I got a veggie burrito and it was light-years better than Chipotle. It was really delicious. The person I was with got the "large" burrito which was basically a foot long. It was easily 2 meals. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you are searching for authentic Mexican.

Want a good relatively authentic burrito? This is your place! I love it here for a quick Mexican fix. The only thing that bugs me is you have to pay for Pico de Gallo and any extra's really, like limes...really? Yep! So I just turn the other cheek and pretend that they do not run their business that way. I know, I know, it;s the economy and we have to save wherever we can which is why I choose to not pay extra. Who is really winning here!!! Anyway , I digress, the food is not bad for fast food Mexican. I go for lunch! And they have a double burrito, which is two huge flour tortillas laid overlapping slightly and then they build your burrito that is about 18 inches long, no kidding! So that may be a nice option for a nearby lumberjack. It is a bit pricey in comparison to say Chipotle which I feel they are trying to be like as you can choose your own meat and veggies, but it is more authentic than Chipotle. It's good to me!

Delicious tacos, great value! I stopped in at Pineda Tacos with a friend for lunch on a recent Friday. This is a prime time for most lunch spots, so I was surprised it was not busier! We were greeted by the large menu board filled with combo specials-- #1 burrito, #2 3 tacos, etc., all served with chips and a drink. Prices are awesome: with tax, #2 combo was a hair over 7 bucks. With 10-12 different meat fillings available, I couldn't help but order a different filling for each taco: chicken with chipotles, beef tongue, and shredded pork. It was my first time trying tongue, and I wasn't disappointed. It was so tender and surprisingly delicately seasoned. While the tongue was the star of this visit, I also enjoyed the other two fillings, the pork in particular. The tacos were generously filled and garnished with cilantro, onion, lime. The chips and salsa were a little lackluster, I must say, but with tacos this big, there's no need for any filler. I only wish the beverage menu included horchata! I will be back.

My favorite burrito joint in the world! Pineda serves large subsandwich size burritos for just over $7. it's hard to eat one in one sitting. And its crazy tasty and fresh. The place is sketchy when you walk in, but don't worry, the taste is worth it.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
