More of a 3.5 than a four until I swing a return visit. Solid beer selection and very good pizza and burgers. The service is a little brusque, the presentation sans frills, reminding you that this is firmly a bar that serves superior food and not a restaurant that serves superior drinks. Members of the waitstaff don the uniform of the vaguely countercultural -- eg tats, gauges, staches, asymmetrical dos -- which might turn off some. Don't bring your grandmother, in other words.

I love the vibe, the food, and the beer list. Tipsy times here have always been good thanks to their extensive tap list. Really great service with knowledgeable staff. Last time, the boo made beardy-man-friends with the guy at the bar and it was kind of a magical moment. This is also the home of my favorite fancy-schmancy sandwich - pear and brie. I have dreams about this sandwich, y'all. Another surprisingly wonderful dish is their goat cheese wontons with pineapple habenero salsa. Get them, refuse to wait until they cool, burn your mouth on the delicious molten filling, growl at your friends who try to take some, and devour them all. You will regret nothing.

My version of Muddy Waters is a late night bar. I'm not a coffee drinker. I usually don't make it to Uptown when it's light out (hell, I prefer to never make it to Uptown but that's a different story). So when I'm here, it's for a drink of the adult variety. They have a great bar and an assortment of seating. Booths, tables, a sort of private area in the back corner, etc. Great beer selection on tap and bottle. I credit Muddy Waters to exposing me to Southern Tier creme brulee stout. I am not a dark beer person but man this is one hell of a beer. I've had great service at the bar and good service from servers. It has been a nice place to drop in for a drink with a relaxed atmosphere and decent to good background music.

Muddy Waters has always been a solid 4 for me! I've been numerous times, it's great for a casual and quick meal, it's also great for vegetarians and vegans. There are also GF items on the menu, and the restaurant is flexible with preparations. There is a take-out option, and they are quick! I also didn't feel like the take-out diminished the quality of my order - which is not the case with all restaurants. I have tried a variety of items on the menu, the yucca fries are my favorite side/app - the chimichurri sauce is excellent! The cilantro is perfect with the yucca. If you like wings, the General Tso's wings are a good option if you can't tolerate heat, like me, they are not too sweet, but have a sweeter taste to them - no other dipping sauce comes with these. The bender braised potroast sliders are a MUST! The potroast is incredibly tender and juicy, I could make a meal out of these. These are a mini comfort food! The apple goat cheese salad is pretty standard, a good salad bThe menu did say caramelized almonds, however our salad had pecans - better in my opinion! At least the toppings are in plentiful and not sparse. I miss the steak salad, this was one of my favorites - it is not longer on the new menu, although perhaps you could ask for it? The one disappointment was the soba noodle salad - the dressing was very thick, so it was difficult to get it tossed evenly. A bite without the dressing and it was extremely bland - this salad is really only okay because of the tangy peanut-dressing, which is really the only flavor. I think this salad needs bean-sprouts, cilantro, and a lime-wedge, and then it would be heading in the right direction. I would not recommend this salad. The braised short rib was a favorite! The meat was very tender, and the demi-glace was not overpowering, it was a nice savory addition. There were five chunks of the short rib, a generous amount. The polenta was delectable! They were buttery and cream, yet light. A welcomed change from the typical accompaniment of mashed potatoes that would usually come in an entree like this. The brussel sprouts were great - definitely more on the charred side than not, but it worked with the light tasting polenta and rich short ribs. A great dish - I'd recommend this one for a lighter twist on a traditionally hearty meal. I will continue to visit Muddy Waters - it's nice for HHs and the vibe inside is very casual. From people working on computers, to just chatting over a drink or coffee, to having a meal - it's unpretentious and the food is good. The outdoor patio in the summer is fantastic - definitely grab a seat here - it's for the most party shady and the traffic from Lyndale is not too loud.

The food is really good, and quick service for a Friday night however i couldn't help but notice an alternative crowd.

LOVE Muddy Waters!! Great food, great atmosphere, great Lyn-Lake location! Come here often with friends for drinks on the patio or for dining on date night or with family. LOVE the food! Best yuca fries in town! Black bean hummus is VERY good! Lamb skewers are divine! And fish tacos are pretty good too! Have been a Muddy Waters customer since the days of its quirky coffee shop beginning up the street and will likely always be a customer :-) Giving 5 Stars for literally decades of good experiences at Muddy Waters despite multiple experiences as of late with moody, inattentive and sometimes just plane bad servers (Summer/Fall 2014). Change that ASAP, please.

I like Muddy Waters. It can be really nice to get out of the house. When you're at home, it's obvious Deborah has left. Her pictures are gone, her sweaters are gathering dust, and the pile of dirty dishes is still untouched. But when you go out, there are no reminders of Deborah. Maybe things haven't even changed with Deborah, maybe you're still together, and just decided to go out alone because Deborah had to go to bed early, but you had a long day and want to unwind and suck down a hot dog or two (they have a rotating selection, I believe for $9). Then maybe you indulge in a couple of Shirley Temples on the rocks, and suddenly who even cares about Deborah? You're in a sea full of nice Deborahs at Muddy Waters Minneapolis. These Deborahs will appreciate you and are very loyal, and if I dare say, a good bit cuter than Deborah. Muddy Waters also has a well-curated tap list and the customer service is on point. I recommend making sure BOTH parties sign the lease when you move into a new place with your significant other, because what if she goes and falls in love with the chiropractor downstairs and leaves you alone to pay the huge rent bill by yourself? That can be a terrible burden, and might cause you to stress eat, in which case you're in luck, because Muddy Waters has quite a few healthy options. I like the mushroom gnocchi. The hummus is great too. I have never heard the song "Deborah" by T.Rex at Muddy Waters, and I don't think I ever will. When I lived in Minneapolis years ago, Muddy Waters was an unassuming coffee shop on 24th and Lyndale. But all good things must come to an end, and hopefully we're all able to grow and mature and quickly move on when this happens, like Muddy Waters has done. I consider myself to be an emotionally stable optimist, but many people are not. Deborah still keeps each of her high school year books on display. Can't say I know any other adults who do that! And then there's the sweaters. Why won't you pick up your sweaters, Deborah? You packed almost every other thing you owned in this home (including a few of my things, don't think I didn't notice) yet you leave behind a stack of six sweaters, still rich with your scent. And it's the middle of sweater season.

Great service, excellent food and specials, cozy surroundings, and some whiskey I had never tried. Plus delicious desserts? I'll be back again.

Sat out on the patio with a bunch of friends to celebrate a birthday and it was great! Food was amazing, service was good. A nice comfortable place to hang out with friends and have a bite to eat.

BILLIONAIRE'S BACON CHANGED MY LIFE. So did "Tipsy Thai". I am somewhat obsessed with Muddy Waters and honestly try to stay away so I don't stumble out into the daylight way too messed up for my own good on a Sunday morning. That being said, if I'm in the neighborhood I usually make it a point to detour to grab a coffee or something stronger if I have time. Luckily for Lynlake, I haven't been in the neighborhood much recently so tequila and kahlua have been the problems of other patrons. For now.

the fish tacos are fantastic! tempura battered fish, crema, coleslaw and if you like spice, ask them to put some serrano peppers on it! i had never been here before and I really like the vibe! We sat in the outside area and the weather was gorgeous. I was too full to eat a real meal but the burgers look delicious. I will be back!

This is my absolute favorite brunch spot. I've moved away and dream about muddy waters brunch and bloodies (with basil vodka). Fantastic place all around - great beer menu, food, coffee bar, etc.

This was my second round at Muddy Waters, I started with a pear cider that was aged in a tequilla barrel, very good! I had the langoustine poutines (5/5) with lobster gravy for appetizer and it was amazing, I would give the restaurant 5/5 stars if everything was to that caliber. My friends had fish tacos(4/5) and that was quite tasty as well. They also order the black bean burger that looked good but I didn't get a chance to taste it. My wife ordered the kimchi grilled cheese (2/5) and that was underwhelming. It was salty and pretty mushy, the server was nice and did swap it with the brie and pear sandwich(3/5). That was pretty good, but was also mushy because it was put on a croissant, I would have put it on french bread to give it better texture. I order the lamb burger (3/5) which was good, but not amazing and I'm comparing it to AZ food truck's lamb burger that was out of this world. It was pretty pricey and didn't come with fries or chips... Why is everyone doing al la carte these days??? You're not Manny's, you're a coffee shop on steroids. I highly recommend the poutines, order one of their many beer varieties, and enjoy the service. Final Word, I would have given them a 3 star because of their heavy hand on the salt, but their service gave them and extra boost

I go here a lot. Since my first review, I've gotten to try so many more things here. 1. The Mexi-Cali dogs. Holy oh my God. These are so fricken delicous. The are hot dogs with bacon, cilantro, some spicy sauce, and thinly sliced radishes. Two for under $6. SUCH a good deal. 2.Awesome eggs benedict. 3.Goat cheese appetizer. Order this, and be amazed at how they decorate the plate with the different sauces. I was mesmerized. 4. Fish tacos-yum. Honestly? This might be my favorite restaurant in Minneapolis in terms of value. I just love it.

Myself and a pair of compatriots were desperately trying to locate a place to eat after the Deltron show last October. Everything we could find was closed, and then a last ditch search on Yelp found a "late night" option, and introduced us to this place. Not one to question Providence, we immediately piled into the car and headed over at almost one in the morning. We were completely unprepared for what we were about to experience. The location is pretty easy to pass, as it's kind of tucked back on an otherwise very packed street. But once you find it, upon entering you're greeted with a very nice, almost rustic atmosphere. The staff were an absolute delight. Our waitress was fun and friendly, despite having a group of weirdos wandering it so late, and the bartender was very knowledgeable and excellent at his craft. The food was fantastic. My friends had the black bean hummus and the fish tacos, I had a goat cheese dip that I can't seem to locate on the menu any more. Quality was excellent, portions were good, though the price was a smidge steep for late night dining. The pints were very reasonably priced, though, which kind of evened things out. All in all, an excellent wind down to the evening. If you're looking for quality food in the evening to the late night in Minneapolis, I strongly recommend stopping in at Muddy Waters.

Two words: Fish tacos. Wow. Wow. More wow. Wow again. Funky spot, lively room, solid service. Cheap beer on HH. Will be back for the muddy burger or a pizza. And of course, more tacos!

I was looking for a nice place with average noise level and great food. Being a Friday, drinks were also on my mind. It was a bit crowded by 9:30 and the noise was loud. I got some cider/ale I think that was fermented in tequila barrels and oh my word! It was delicious! I ordered the Korean mock duck BBQ tacos for my very picky friend who refuses to eat any vegetables and even he liked them. Granted he picked out the radish, cilantro, and cucumbers... Then eventually ate the duck without the soft taco....he still really enjoyed them. I picked the lamb burger (almost everything is a la carte) with their fries. I really wanted to try the yuca fries but I was too hungry to step that far out of my comfort zone. The lamb was so flavorful and juicy. I scoffed it down and almost licked the plate (I decided wiping the plate clean then licking my fingers was the more civilized option-don't judge me!). I would definitely recommend this place and would like to try it again. Just beware parking is on the street aka a nightmare especially in Minnesota winters!!

Almost five stars good Better up front than in back Serious tattoos I'm stealing the haiku idea. Thanks, Tom Ryan. Any place that has Bell's Two Hearted on tap and spins Modest Mouse gets a plus one star in my system. Decided to come here based upon the Yelp reviews, and it did not disappoint. I give this place 4.75 stars. I do not round up, sorry. The front part of the restaurant is very open-air and has a couple large screen TV's (perfect for the last nice weekend of the year). The back has no TV's and is very dark (especially when the lights are flickering on and off). Apparently, one of my dining companions doesn't care for sunshine or modern technology. LYM. Several of the reviews here have complained about the staff. I have no such complaints. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. For appetizers, ordered the haloumi (which I had never had before) and the plain-jane french fries. The haloumi was kind of bland and very gourmet style. The fries were very good and plentiful. Icehouse, if you are reading this, this is what I expect portion-wise when I order a side of fries. For the main course, I went with the shrimp po' boy. Way better than the Fish Taco Torta at Tilia, but not quite as good as the po' boys at Sea Salt Eatery. Good amount of shrimp with apple slices and a tasty sauce. Quite filling. Most of the staff here could be featured in Inked Magazine. No judging whatsoever. Just an observation.

I was a loyal patron of the old Muddy Waters location on Lyndale and 24th. It was just a coffee shop then and it was hipster heaven with a broken plate mosaic covering the walls and a little graffiti-covered bathroom. I loved it. Then they moved down the street and Urban Bean moved in to the old location. I miss the old Muddy Waters, but this new location is wonderful. Full bar at affordable prices, great menu, awesome brunch, and still serves great coffee and pastries at the front counter. It's definitely a different feel from the old location, but I like it. It's cozy, relaxed, and affordable.

They won me over with their Muddy Cubano coffee. Espresso brewed with raw sugar, cinnamon and some other goodness I can't remember. Breakfast as which was also very good. A little slower than a typical coffee shop on the food but worth the wait because it was done right. I haven't tried the later evening menu but I will definitely be back. Staff was also very nice :)

I've been to this place a few times now and had a great experience each time. It can be a bit loud in there, but nothing crazy. The staff has always been helpful for me and done the basics just fine (nothing above and beyond, which is ok). The best part of this place is the food and drinks. Oh my gosh yum. Some of the best food and flavor combinations I've had here. Definitely recommend if you just want some amazing food at a reasonable price.

Excellent beer list, stiff well pours, a solid food menu, AND regular local celebrity sightings? Why yes, I'll hang out here. Muddy Waters has been in its current location for a few years now, and I love it more every time I go back. I prefer to sit either at the bar indoors, or if it's nice out, try to grab a spot in their awesome, narrow, Europe-esque patio. I enjoy studying here during the morning and the early afternoon, but there comes a time when you feel a little inappropriate staring into a laptop and need to either pack up for the day and head home, or commit to an evening of cocktail sipping with the rest of the masses. As for food, I'd skip their pizza - when I had it, the crust was burnt to a crisp and really unappetizing. The pear and brie sandwich, hummus and veggies, and yucca fries are excellent. And their desserts are killer, too - check the bakery case for quick grab-and-go options, or ask your server for details on their features. Speaking of servers, sometimes they're not the greatest - there's confusion and order mix-ups more often then not when I'm on the patio. But if you can take that in stride and have time for a relaxing afternoon/evening, Muddy Waters is an excellent spot to escape from typical Uptown hangouts.

This is one of my favorite places. Everything I've tried has been amazing. I've gone for brunch, lunch, and dinner so have had a good smattering of different menu items and always leave impressed. It's a great go-to brunch spot - malted waffles are a must. The atmosphere is also great - friendly staff, good music, nice decor. If you haven't checked this place out yet, do it ASAP.

My favorite spot in the uptown Minneapolis area. I love the atmosphere and the service is always top notch. I can't get enough of their breakfast selection (the billionaires bacon is a must) and they always have awesome featured entrees for dinner. The beer selection is 2nd to none.

I love this place! I have only been here once with my bf. It reminded us of the awesome show, "Portlandia". Very hipster-green atmosphere. They have a bar AND a bakery/coffee section. Very cute, intimate, quiet, little gem. Great Bloody's but you have got to try the Margherita pizza. Best I ever had. We also had the chocolate creme pie for dessert. It is served in a mason jar. The bartender asked us what we thought and my bf said, "Chocolate creme pie. Nothing wrong with that." The bartender agreed. Muddy Waters is probably my new fav place. Next time I go here I will dress like I don't care about my appearance, like the rest of their customers. Nothing wrong with that.

The atmosphere is what sets this place apart. The crowd is diverse - you've got people in their 20s, you've got people in their 40s. You've got people here on (loud) dates, people here chatting about their latest relationship conundrums, double dates just having a good time, older couples just going somewhere to get out of the house. It's a pretty unique place - transforms depends on the hour it seems. I'd like to come during the day and take advantage of it as a dark, moody cafe, where I can get some work done, enjoy some coffee and pastries, and on warm days bask in the sun on the patio with my laptop. At night it's definitely more of a happening bar. The staff here are friendly, quick and makes sure to check up on your food and experience. They've got some more unique items on the menu - lamb burger, Surly's Garbage Fire, yucca fries to mention some. The lamb burger (I ordered it medium) was a bit overdone and dry and it was smaller than I expected - I guess I'm used to bigger portions that oftentimes come with fries for that price. The sauce that came on it was a bit too salty although the creaminess helped, the arugula was tasty and helped balance out the richness of the patty. The pickled cucumbers were tasty though. The Muddy burger was pretty good too, had fried bacon? I'm not entirely sure what it was made of but it was tasty! Same set up, no fries, with pickled cucumbers. The yucca fries were fried to perfection and the chimichurri sauce was to die for. But there weren't many of them considering the price. All in all I'd come here again but probably not that often unless I'm with a group of friends. Great vibes though!

What's not to love about this place? Adorable patio. Great food that's delicious but accessible. Cocktails. Coffee. Pastries that make you want to weep with happiness. Parking you have to pay for...oh there it is the thing not to love about it. But it's Uptown so I should quit my bitching. I had the pear, brie and bacon croissant. It was really tasty. I'm a sucker for a good sammich and this was it. I only wish the bread was a little more substantial. Don't get me wrong the croissant was good but the middle was too heavy to hold up to the pastry. Can't wait to go back and try the black bean burger. This is one of my favorite spots for lunch in the area. I wish these guys would open a cozy cafe in NE. It would be my perfect work/coffee/food spot.

I've been here multiple times and I really enjoy the place. Great food, great service, great atmosphere. Whether you are coming here for breakfast/lunch/dinner, they have a lot of yummy, delicious food. I usually get their Muddy's Burger, which is super good. I've also tried their sweet potato fries and they are fantastic. As for breakfast, I usually just get toast and hash browns, but they have one of the best tasting hash browns I've ever had! They are really flavorful. I've only had one weird experience here with a waitress who half way through the night decided to ignore us when we were ready to pay, but the next time we came in we had a super nice and funny guy wait on us, so I'll just assume it was an off night for that one lady. I highly recommend this place!

Muddy Waters is right down the street from my friend's place and they have an open outside area where dogs are permitted, so the three of us popped in for brunch. Brunch, which might mean scrambled eggs or French toast. It certainly means Bloody Mary or Mimosa. And they had all of that in spades. I saw several Marys go by - for some strange reason, they put a pickle spear in them. Pass. I had a large coffee (24 ounces in a huge glass, which made it rather challenging to drink without burning my fingers) and a Mimosa. And for food, the "soft scrambled eggs with smoked salmon" which is actually salmon not mixed into the eggs. On the side, something they call "Billionaire's bacon" and believe me, there is enough on one plate for two or even three people. Several rashers that are cooked the usual way, then cooled and rolled in brown sugar and then baked again for a bit (I looked up a recipe). Service was good from the well-inked staff. I'll be back here for sure.

There are some things that I really like at Muddy Waters. Their Bloody is delicious, and you can't go wrong with billionaire's bacon. Waffles are awesome. Great sandwiches. Some of my favorite fries in the cities. My girlfriend really loves the food here so we go every once in a while but I had the honest-to-Betsy worst biscuits and gravy I've ever had in my life here. I don't think I've left a plate unclean/not taken home leftovers in the past million years, and I left more than 3/4 of this meal on the plate. Blech. The gravy was ill. That being said, I've had overall positive experiences and people do seem to love Muddy in general, so maybe my biscuits were an anomaly.

I have been in love with Muddy since it opened. I have enjoyed everything on their menu I have ever tried (the list at this point would be quite long). Recently my friend and I have been splitting a build your own pizza whenever we go there together: Zucchini and bacon. DELISH! I really miss the Brussels sprouts dish they used to have... that butter sauce was to die for! Please bring the dish back! Also, they have an amazing bloody Mary with basil infused vodka.

After missing out on brunch of few weeks ago (we got there a bit early so don't show up before 10am!) we finally made it in for dessert. My iced mocha was really good and the salted caramel pudding was absolutely amazing. The seating is a bit cramped and service wasn't the best (granted, it was really busy) but the dessert and great coffee was worth it.

LOVELY. I'm high on love for this place. They never disappoint me. I get along better with my friends when we happy hour here, I love my boyfriend more when we get drinks here and I love myself more when I eat dinner here. Finally a place that provoked me into writing a new review. So let me start off by saying I use to like to this place. We went for happy hour only to discover that the "happy hour" ends at 5:00pm sharp. That's not a happy hour. So if you want a drink after happy hour this place averages $5.75 for most tap beers, which is really $6. Really? It's not downtown nor is this Chicago, NYC or LA and I live in uptown. I do love the yucca fries and green sauce though, they are as close to my old NYC haunt (Pio Pio) as I have found in the twin cities and at $4.50 I consider it a deal. The black bean hummus is also fabulous. I really truly did like this place especially the yucca fries until I found out the happy hour ends at 5 pm, the average cost of a beer is $5.75 but then came the kicker, my friend was charged $.30 for a beer sample!(see photo) We tried to order probably half the seasonal beers on the menu, but they were out so our server offered us a sample which we took and then proceeded to order at least 6 other beers. So minus $.30 for this place's management for even having that charge in their system. The patio was great, but while watching others we felt lucky not to be downwind from a smoking table as the patio is quite small. If you just want yucca fries or food then go here. If you're looking for a good happy hour go down the street to Moto-i.

Food/Drink: First time coming here and it was pretty good. We got there in time for brunch. Ordered the biscuits and gravy and some cuban hash's. Side of potatoes and bacon (the special one). The cuban hash was great and that's what I'd order next time, however, I'm on a biscuits and gravy kick so I had that. Pleasantly surprised they had sausage gravy (not on the menu) and dug in to good food. The bacon we ordered had a sweet glaze on it (reminiscent of BBQ pork from a Vietnamese joint), but it was still pretty good. I'll be trying the "normal" bacon next time or maybe move up to sausage. The potatoes were decent, but nothing to write home about. Ambiance: Some people told me it's the old site of X or Y. For me it's now the best use of the space. The interior has windows that open fully to the outside and there's enough seating so groups would be comfortable. Sitting at the bar doesn't look to dissapoint either. We sat outside which has this European bistro thing going on, and really works. Given a chance (and not too large of a group), sit outside and enjoy the weather. Service: Good service. We did have one mistaken dish (but the guy showed up late so I blame him). Got our drinks quick and the food was warm and didn't take too long. She gave us some recommendations when we were on the fence and they didn't disappoint. Overall: Really good. Not sure what they can do to push it to a 5, but I'll keep going to them across the next few months to figure it out. Definitely one of my favorites for a brunch in the Lyn-Lake area.

I can only give this three stars due to the service or lack of that was received. To be fair I met up with a small group here on a Saturday morning/afternoon and it was packed...We had the small room semi-private in the back. The food was good enough that I will give them another go. They have a pretty interesting menu and really yummy coffee. This is a busy rather noisey place full of people which can be stimulating but if you are looking for quiet and relaxing this would not be for you.

So I debated giving MW 3 or 4 stars. I feel like it's a solid 3.5 honestly. I went to Muddy Waters for Sunday brunch a couple weeks ago. It was my first time there. We had a group of 5, and anticipating that there would be a wait (they don't do reservations on Sundays), I arrived about a half hour before the rest of the group to put our name in. It was a little awkward walking in because it was packed and there's no hostess stand. I aimlessly wandered up to the bar, but no one there acknowledged me so then I just kind of stood around for a bit until I finally identified the hostess and flagged her down to get my name on the list. I was told it would be about 20 minutes -- not bad and lined up perfectly with when the rest of my party was supposed to arrive. There is no waiting area here, so I just huddled by the bar. I thought about ordering a Bloody Mary for the wait, but the bar was packed and no one approached me to ask if I wanted anything anyway, which was fine. Important to note though that it gets insanely crowded in here and you will have a hard time finding a place to stand and wait. If it had been warmer, I definitely would have stood outside. The rest of my party slowly trickles in, and I tell them all we should be seated around 11. 11 comes and goes and no table, but the place is small and we could see a lot of people were lingering at their tables and not leaving. The hostess came over to us around 11:15 and said our table was just paying their check and we should be seated soon. She was super apologetic about the wait, which was nice. We finally got seated around 11:20 I think -- so wait time was actually more like 40 instead of 20. Once seated, things were fine and dandy. I had a Bloody Mary which was really tasty and I got the pork belly hash I think which was super delicious. And, the portion sizes were perfect. Not crazy huge where you feel like a monster trying to eat it all, just a nice sized, satisfying portion. There was a DJ spinning all sorts of music including some hits from the 90s and 00s, which made for a fun atmosphere. Our server was friendly, professional, and helpful -- and had super cool pink hair. Uptown! All in all, I would come back but I guess I would plan to wait a while for a table and maybe pop next door for a beer or something and have them call me instead of awkwardly crouching by the bar. I recommend, but don't go here unless you have your patient pants on.

The Elvis waffles are to die for. Service was exceptional and the atmosphere is lovely. My only complaint is that they do not offer brunch items without eggs :)

just had muddy's for dinner tonight, and once again it was awesome! i've eaten here over a dozen times and can say with certainty- the yucca fries should be illegal because they are so addicting. (you have one, and you go "hmmm...that's pretty good", and then you apparently black out because next thing you know the whole plate is gone) and this place legitimately has the best gluten free pizza in ALL OF MINNEAPOLIS. yes! i finally found it!!! muuuuuuhahahahahahahahaha! ok, sorry, but yeah, trust me on that. it can get a little cramped and loud, but it's a popular place for good reason. everyone i've ever gone there with has enjoyed their food. tonight my friend ordered the general tso's chicken and goat cheese wontons and really liked it all. moral of the story: this is a great place to get a bite. try it out!!

Have eaten here a few times since I live nearby. I didn't care for the brunch the time I went, but I see that the menu has changed so I might give it another shot. I remember getting a breakfast burrito and some of the filling was cold and the tortilla hadn't been warmed. The dinner menu is really good based on what we've had so far: Fish tacos - two decently sized tacos, battered and fried fish with a nice slaw on top. It's under the appetizer menu but is enough as an entree. Muddy's Burger - well made but doesn't come with anything i.e. you have to order the fries separately for another $4, which brings the total for a burger and fries to $14. Given how cheap fries are, it's pretty lame they don't come with them. At the very least, offer a side of fries for another $1-$2. The side order is way too much for one person. IMHO, charging for fries with a burger is like charging for steamed rice with sesame chicken. Stop being cheap! I wanted to order the steak salad on one of my visits, but ended up changing my mind because the server said the "only" way the steak could be cooked is medium rare. I asked if I could have it medium and she said it was "impossible." I find that hard to believe. And I was a little annoyed that the chef would be so stubborn about something like this. Braised pot roast: a big chunk of tender beef on top of roasted potatoes and broccolini. Crispy shallots are sprinkled on top. Very yummy, but heavy. Definitely a comfort food type meal. Grilled Corvina - my sister got the fish special of the day. It came on top of two slices of grilled watermelon, avocado mousse and was garnished on top with watercress. Beautiful presentation. The flavors worked well together. The fish is a mild white flaky fish. Solid entree, but didn't blow us away. Yuca fries - you get about six thick-cut fries with a chimichurri dipping sauce. It was good, but for $4.50, I think the portion was pretty small. Our server was polite and friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Our only complaint was that she was really slow about everything. She clearly had too many tables to serve. It took a long time to get our beers, for the food to come out, for her to come check on us, for her to come clear our plates, etc. After she rattled off our dessert options, it took her forever to come back to ask if we wanted dessert. After we declined, it took forever for her to drop off the check and to process it. I'll probably go back since it's so close to us, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come eat here.

I made it here for happy hour! Sooo glad that I did. Amazing cheap booze(beer and wine only) and discounted food. We each got cans of Fat Tire and ordered the peanut wings, yucca fries, and reg fries. All of which were ah-may-zing. I forgot that the yucca fries come with a sort of cilantro mint dip. I gobbled it all up as soon as it came to the table. Service was great, as usual. Pure satisfaction.

THE SHORT RIBS ARE PERFECTION!!! Salty Brussels, tender BBQ short ribs, perfectly creamy polenta, and some crazy gravy sauce. I gave muddys three stars based on burgers and dogs but the short ribs warrant my first 5 star rating. Nom.

This is for their weekend brunch: Brunch is a simple concept for me and my my wife, good food, good drinks, and friendly service. Muddy Waters was all that. We had a coffee stout on tap (they had LOTS of good choices on tap) and each had a mimosa. The beers were great and local, the mimosas were a glass of champagne with a splash of juice (grapefruit or orange) excellent. The bartenders were friendly and had great suggestions. For food we went with the chili cheese steak and egg burrito and the breakfast pizza. Burrito was solid but would probably try something else next time, not as saucy as I wanted it to be. The pizza was huge and delicious. Pulling off egg on a pizza is tricky and they do it well. We spent about $70 including tip after we couldn't resist getting some coffee to go (the Muddy Cubano is amazing) and felt it was a pretty fair price. We will definitely be returning here. Four stars because the burrito coulda been better and to me five stars is perfect, but this place is worth your money!

Not quite what I remembered...I had only been to Muddy Waters once before, and left the first time thinking what a fantastic place. Going off my previous experience I thought it would be a perfect place to hold our monthly dinner club. Since there are 5 of us we always try to make reservations, keeps us from waiting 30 minutes and eating at 8. Sadly they do not take reservations for less then 6 people, which caused me some anxiety. Being the person I am, I called when I was on my way there and they were more than happy to set aside a table for us. Since the restaurant is a little on the smaller side, we were put at a smaller table right by the door. Which in MN in the winter is the worst possible scenario, so needless to say we had our jackets on the whole meal. I ordered the steak sandwich, left little to desire. Two of my friends ordered pizzas, the other two shared the ribs and Poutine. I had bites of their food and realized I clearly made the wrong decision on what to eat. It is a normal place to go for a casual dinner, not my first choice but not my last. Maybe next time will change my mind...

Casual, laid back restaurant/bar with a good late night menu. Not just a beer place, but they have a nice selection of wine too. Split a pesto/blue cheese/walnut/balsamic pizza for ~$14, which seemed a little expensive, but it was good quality, really delicious and unique. The ingredients fit together perfectly with only a subtle hint of blue cheese, which I typically find to be offensive. I've been craving more ever since... ***Update*** Been back a few times since my original post for lunch and brunch. The food is still good, but not Tony the Tiger GRREAAATTT. I did downgrade from 4 stars due to sub-par service, especially during a lunch time visit. Our waitress just peaced out somewhere for an extended period of time. Her absence was so lengthy that the bartender took over service when he noticed us scanning the room for our waitress. And, in my experience, the servers have been cold. Come to think of it, the whole vibe at Muddy Waters seemed cold and unfriendly--even the temperature, with frigid winter air seeming to sneak in despite the partitioning between the door and the restaurant. Taken together, I'm not ever dying to pay Muddy Waters a visit.

I'm in town visiting family for the week and needed a spot to do some work. My sister recommended Muddy Waters and I've fallen in love with the place. First of all the coffee is legit! I ordered a Mocha my first visit which was great, but on my next I ordered the Lucky Strike which is a combo of Mocha, Peppermint and Caramel. YUM, it was like Heaven in my mouth! The vibe is super chill, they serve food and booze in addition to coffee. I liked there were outlets along the bar and wifi, plus the servers were super chill. I liked the look of the place is alternative put not pretentious. Will have to come back in the evening for happy hour before I leave.

Muddy Waters is a great bar for beer lovers and geeks. The selection of craft brews is wide and fairly priced, along with a couple of cheap staples like Hamm's and PBR. They also have a nice patio and our server was great. He was super knowledgeable and impressed us by remembering which beers our entire group of 8 ordered, by memory. We just did drinks but the food looked fantastic. Check it out!

I went there for the first time on a Sunday evening, and it was busy (in a good way). My friends got a table in the back by the kitchen, which fit about 7 of us. Like others, I'd describe the atmosphere has dim, trendy, and hipster. It was a nice setting :). Service was good and quick for as busy as it was. I tried the fish tacos and the polenta fries. The fish tacos were good but not as memorable as the polenta fries. The polenta fries were really tasty and unique and are something I'd get again. There was something about the texture of the fries and the taste of gouda that made them so good. I usually like sharing food, but this time I was a true fattie and decided to keep the fries to myself. Felt a little guilty but no regrets :p. Fish tacos were good and fresh. I didn't feel unhealthy eating here. Waitresses were awesome and friendly. Overall great experience.

Soooo, just moved to the area and my girlfriend and I decided to check out this restaurant and after waiting to even be acknowledged we decided to get up and leave. So far has been some of the worst service I have ever seen. Want to try there beer list one day...,

I loved this place! My fish tacos and roasted Brussels sprouts were amazing (really, they don't taste like cabbage!). We were seated right next to the kitchen so deciding what to order became harder with each plate I saw go out. Heard the breakfast is outstanding, so that might be next . . .

I went to Muddy Waters for brunch a couple of months back. It was packed when we arrived but I can't fault them for that. We ordered coffee and stood awkwardly waiting for a table. After about 30-45 minutes, we were told we could try to squeeze our party of four into a booth that was meant to seat more like 2. Hungry and adventurous, we took them up on the offer and settled in. We'd chosen Muddy Waters out of a handful of places we were considering ultimately because I have dietary restrictions (lactose-intolerant and don't eat pork, beef, or poultry) and their online menu included a "can be prepared vegan" symbol that was listed on two brunch menu items: "muddy's breakfast...two eggs, home fries, choice of protein, choice of toast" (for $8 as is, $9 if subbing tofu for eggs, but I eat eggs so this was not an issue for me) OR "chorizo hash or curried tofu hash...potato, red onion, zucchini, egg (chorizo only), salsa, seasoned sour cream, tortillas" (for a whopping $12). Looking to save a few bucks, I asked about the choice of protein for vegetarians and the waitress looked at me like I was speaking anything but English. Eventually she went back to talk to the kitchen, returned, and said "We don't have a non-meat protein." While normally I am apologetic to waitstaff and understanding of average restaurants not catering to the vegan crowd, I typically expect that a restaurant making the effort to indicate veganizeable (I know, making up a word...stay with me here) options is going to be a little better at rounding out the menu to actually accommodate this. Anyway, since I felt like maybe that meal wouldn't be as filling missing the "choice of protein", I instead selected the curried tofu hash. The waitress again gave me a bit of a weird look when I ordered it, and it was the last meal of my table to arrive - yet it was extremely cold when it came. I stirred it around looking at what was on my plate...it was essentially some under-cooked potato chunks, a LOT of bland "salsa" (seemed like unseasoned, canned diced tomatoes), and two folded and stale tortillas. Oh, and one (literally ONE) small cube of tofu. Meanwhile, my dining companions were raving about their food, all dishes significantly cheaper than mine and in steaming, heaping portion sizes. My boyfriend convinced me to say something about the complete and utter absence of tofu in my already lackluster dish, and the server rolled her eyes and took my plate/bowl thing, returning with the same dish but a few extra pieces of tofu added. As satisfied as I was obviously going to be, I went ahead and ate what was in front of me. It was't great, but it was food and I'd been there for almost two hours by that point. Anyway, I've heard amazing things about the restaurant and I'd love to give it a second chance eventually - but I will probably never return for brunch, and I'll definitely have to do some more research as to what vegan dishes are actually worth ordering. Especially for the location, there are a lot of great places offering options for all kinds of dietary preference and restrictions so it's unfortunate that this place just didn't do it for me the first time around.

Unimpressed with the bar manager's service. Food and service were otherwise good. Basically, we just moved here from Montreal, and my gf only had her Quebec ID on her. No other establishments, even the liquor store, have had a problem with this, as it's a government issued ID. Because it's in French, sometimes it takes a second to decode, but its clearly govt issued and the DOB is obvious. Our server was unsure, but was apologetic and polites. We asked to speak to the manager, and he was just defensive, saying if it wasn't in the book he couldn't accept it. I think its ignorant of the book to not include the QC healthcare ID (which is the most common form of govt issued ID), but I can understand a business being cautious. I think its silly, but I understand it. What I can't forgive is the defensive and unapologetic tone. We will take our business elsewhere.

Muddy Waters is a MUST for anyone in the mood for friendly service, unexpected food and a fabulous selection of beers on tap! It's my new go-to for friends and family visiting the uptown area. What I love most about this place is that it's a great place for date night, hanging with friends or (during the day) grabbing a cup of coffee while you catch up on studying/work. If you're looking for a great selection of local and national taps, Muddy Waters if your place. You'll never be disappointed with the pizza or the fall-flavored Pumpkin Risotto. And you can't go wrong with the signature burger. The pizzas are huge and feed at least two people. It's hipster, local and has character. What more could you ask for in a local bar & eatery?! Service is super fabulous!

***VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY*** (I'm not a vegetarian, but I hope this will catch a vegetarian's attention. While visiting a friend who recently moved to Minneapolis, we decided to dine here. We both like to try new things and this was no disappointment. We ordered the bacon wrapped squash for the appetizer. For dinner, I ordered the pumpkin risotto and she got the steak salad. If you're a vegetarian, they have quite a few options. The food was quite delicious. Our waiter didn't seem that interested in us, but he did his duties and didn't have an attitude so I suppose it's all good. Come to think of it, he was attentive, but didn't make it very obvious. So if you're looking for either good food or a great selection of beer, this is the place. Especially if you're from out of town, give this place a shot.

I'm a photographer, and I had a meeting here with one of my wedding clients on a Sunday evening. Not the best idea. We took up a booth for our meeting, and waited to order until the end. Our meeting lasted 20 maybe 25 minutes. The entire time though, our server kept pestering us to order something. We kept assuring her that we would order after we were done, and I had ordered a drink in the mean time. But because our client we were meeting with didn't want to order anything, our server essentially kicked her out and told us to move to a smaller table. It was EXTREMELY rude. She told her, "look, I have a full restaurant right now. If you're not going to order anything, I can't have you sit here." I was stunned. I get it, you're packed, and you want to seat more people, but be a little bit more considerate to your current customers - not blatantly kick out our client/guest. Despite the apprehensibly rude waitress, we surrendered to her demands, and moved to a smaller table to order dinner. We also got a new waiter, who was actually nice and friendly - good to know at least someone there had proper customer service etiquette. Even though they were completely packed, we didn't wait too long for our food, and it was delicious. Best fish tacos ever. My cocktail was excellent as well. I would definitely give this place another try, they have wonderful food and I like the atmosphere. But to our unkind waitress - I don't know if you were just having a bad day or what, but you came off as a hideous horsebeast. Please do better next time.

Get fish tacos, yuca fries, and a basil Bloody Mary and you will be set (for lunch, at least)! Late night they have some really great cocktails and Steel Toe on tap. Molly is a fantastic server, and we always have good experiences here!

I am developing a bit of a crush on Muddy Waters, and like not a cute one. Its sort of stalkerish. Honestly, just go eat the mock duck Korean bbq tacos. Get the fries, and the yuca fries. Order the Surly Coffee Bender. enjoy it and then later send me a thank you email. I would write more glowing praise, but what is the point, just do what I say.

I was visiting Minnesota recently and grabbed some food and drinks here with a friend. Was so happy to see they had Lone Star (I'm easy to please), and the appetizers we split were great. We had the smoked salmon (with goat cheese aioli), and dumplings stuffed with goat cheese (the dumplings had cinnamon sugar on the outside). Really interesting flavor combinations! The smoked salmon was very smoky - almost a bit too much - but that didn't really stop us from eating the whole thing. I ordered a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon (prior to my Lone Star) and it was served in a regular glass which was a nice change. Aside from the food, the decor was gorgeous, and everyone seemed really chill. Definitely going back the next time I'm in MN!

I had a pretty good experience at Muddy Waters. Not anything that really excited me, but it's a decent place to hang out and grab a few drinks or bar food. The sweet and spicy peanut wings are really good. The sauce was awesome and the wings are a good size. Plus, for $8 you get a pretty big portion. Also, props for having such a huge drink selection, both on tap and available in bottles/cans. My boyfriend also had a burger, it was pretty good, although nothing to write home about. I had the pear and brie sandwich with cottage bacon. It was pretty good. I liked that it was on a croissant and it was a nice different option to just a burger or other usual bar food. The atmosphere here is pretty typical for an uptown area bar in my opinion. The service was good and the tables are cozy without being overly too close together. I still felt that we had enough privacy. I wasn't overly impressed or overly disappointed with Muddy Waters. I'm not sure if I'll go back or not...there are a lot of these type of places right in the area, so we'll see.

Love at first taste? I think I died and went to heaven when I went here last Saturday, my very first time. I've passed this place a million times since it's located right next to Tiger Sushi, Buffalo Exchange, and Ducati (just kidding on this one) but have never tried this place out. I got the Mudd'ys breakfast (two eggs, home fries, bacon, and toast) and it was the bomb. It's a nice, quality breakfast for a good price - yum. One of my girl friends got the pear & brie sandwich which I am definitely getting the next time I go here! The seating is kind of weak though - went here with four other people and we had to squeeze into a booth which wasn't very comfortable. The people seated three to a bench barely had any arm room which is crucial when you're feasting. However, I think they were too busy enjoying the food to care. But whatever, I am so happy that my love for breakfast food has resurfaced because I honestly wish I could eat Muddy Water's breakfast everyday for the next month- YUM. Also, our waiter was very friendly and tolerant of our q's (e.g What are home fries? Uhh I'm not sure if we were too hung to think or we actually didn't know....) Bottom line - my first impression was awesome! I wish there were 1/2 stars because I'd really like to give this place a 4.5 -.5 stars for the lack of seating.

The very first time I checked out Muddy Waters... it was my birthday and was definitely looking forward to it because of the reviews that I have read from Yelp. The server that we had was very social and had a lot of suggestions when asked about drinks and also suggested dishes when some people from our party struggled with ordering a dish that they'd like. I had a variety of their cocktails which included one that was similar to a thai iced coffee which was amazing. I also had the pork belly with pineapples and jasmine rice which I would recommend to anyone. The next couple of times I came back.. The server we had might've been new but was very quiet and awkward; it made me and a my friends a bit uncomfortable. We asked about the cocktails that we have had previously and they said that they don't know what we were talking about.. so we just ignored it and didn't grab any drinks. I had the House Cured Salmon which was amazing. I wasn't too hungry this time and it definitely hit the spot. The rest of our group had the general tso wings and the butcher steak which were very tasty. Will give this spot another try sometime in the future.

I don't like this place. I came here looking to try the poutine but they only have "lobster poutine" for lunch, which i did not try. I did order the steak sandwich was confused medley of good steak and good bread but other stuff like "aioli" (more like McDonald's special sauce) cauliflower, carrots, pickles, onions... you name it, pickled vegetables i think.. good intentions but didn't work for me. The coffee was good, but the extra side of fries, tho house made, were thin, not the kind i like. And the meal was pretty pricey considering. I was here before, and forgot till i came in and heard loud head banging music and remembered why i didn't like it. The food, in my opinion is mediocre, tho house made and i don't like the music either. The place kind of fits this part of Minneapolis, uptown, sorta hipster, so i'm guessing old men like me don't fit their normal clientele. The food had the feeling of house made stuff which i appreciate but the chef and i differ in taste, i like things simpler. The staff is friendly but i hope i don't accidentally come back, and after this read the review they will probably be ok with that.

I love the food here and I really appreciate their variety of vegetarian options, but I must say that the pricing and service often leave something to be desired. I've been going to Muddy's fairly regularly for nearly two years, and in that time, I've seen the prices gradually creep up on everything from the Mexicali Not-Dogs (seriously, $11???), to the smaller-than-everywhere else beer pours. Seriously, they pour Bent Paddle's Cold Brew in 10 oz glasses and charge $6? This is not a strong beer, which is usually why smaller glasses are offered. Their beer selection is good, but it's not great, and it certainly doesn't warrant their exorbitant pricing. Beyond the pricing, I've found that, on average, the service is okay. Some servers really care about their jobs and some don't. Some are friendly, funny and make great recommendations, and some are more concerned about looking cool. I've found myself less and less excited to go to Muddy Waters lately, and I've been happy to find that there are other establishments that do a better job and don't rely on a hip location for their business.

First visit at Muddy Waters. Went for Memorial Day brunch. Great food choices and fun, modernized breakfast options. Nice mimosas and bloody marys. Staff was kind and helpful. My only complaint was that the booths and chairs were really hard. By then end of the meal I was squirming around because my butt hurt. I would love to try this place during a happy hour.

I wandered in here after a downpour last weekend to get some work done and have a bite to eat. I was extraordinarily impressed with the food and the service! The decor was not overwhelming but still fun. The big windows in the front let in some natural light, which was nice. The seats against the wall were quite comfortable, and the booths looked cozy as well. The bathroom was clean and well-stocked, but since it was single-occupancy I can imagine a long line for the women's room during weekend evenings. My server (Charlene, which is the best waitress name ever) was absolutely darling, answering my questions, giving advice, and calling me "hon" and "sweetie." She was born to do this. She was very attentive and took great care of my hungover self. I ordered a peach iced tea. It was alright, but not outstanding. I'd probably go for coffee and/or booze next time. On the advice of other Yelpers, I ordered the pot roast sliders and the yucca fries. Holy Moses, this was good advice. I'm now convinced that all fries should be yucca fries. The flavorful green dipping sauce that came with them is outstanding; I'm craving it again as I write this. The pot roast sliders were juicy and packed with flavor. The buns were soft/thick enough to absorb excess liquid without turning into a soggy mess. The pickled onions and the pickles added a perfect tangy acidity to balance out the warm, rich pot roast. When the check came, I was pleasantly surprised at how little money such good, plentiful food cost. I couldn't eat much (see the aforementioned hangover), but Charlene packed up everything for me, and it was just as delicious later. I look forward to returning whenever I'm back in The Cities.

Neat place! Came here for the food but stayed for the amazeballs beer. I had the Cuban pork type sandwich and my buddy had the steak dinner. Both were delicious! I guess I didn't read the menu thoroughly enough to learn you have to order the sides separately, the fries don't come with the sandwich. Which I thought was odd. I'd like to come back for the music/DJ that posters everywhere were proclaiming.

This is the perfect place for brunch. I get my weird little order, drink a ton of coffee and read. The service can be a little slow, but I go during peak times. My standard is a few poached eggs, a side of hollandaise and a side of bacon. Yes, I'm gross. Yes, they would read this review and know who I was. But they're cool and I get my low-carb eggs benedict at a decent price. I took my mom here after Mother's Day brunch so she could get a decent mimosa. My priorities are unassailable. My mom dug MW and we were both comfortable. I've had the malted waffle; very good. There's a nutella banana variation that'll kick your ass. I'd also recommend the billionaire's bacon. It's sweet and a little sticky.

I'm always stoked to try new restaurants when I visit my best friend in Minneapolis. This time, it was a new version of an old favorite. Muddy Waters used to be a coffee shop close to The Wedge. Great place. And now they've evolved into so much more...and it's real, real good, darlin. First time I went for happy hour with friends. I had the mussels and the watermelon with seared ahi. The mussels were incredible. Done right in a beer and curry broth. Very fresh seafood, and incredibly complex flavor on the broth. But the ahi. You have to try this dish. The watermelon is presented cubed with a light marinade of awesome sauce. And then the fish is seared and sliced perfectly, with a smoky sweet rub on the ends. On a bed of watermelon salsa. Let's just say I made sweet love to that dish. Can we say stuff like that on yelp? I'm just trying to get across to you fine people...Muddy Waters knows their stuff. On Tuesday we went back and I had the beet risotto. I ordered the ahi again, too. Still awesome. The risotto was crazy good; had a great balance of earthy, sweet and salty. Of course, I only remembered to take a picture of one dish. Because you get lost in the good. Other pluses of this fantastic joint: Great wait staff. Fast, personable, and almost as awesome as the ahi. Good drinks. I had a dark and stormy and it was poured all perfect-like Nice lines. This is a cool space, with good seating inside and additional outside

I don't understand all the hype surrounding this place. Nobody in my group was really impressed with our food. I think it's bizarre that a hamburger would not come with french fries or any other side. You have to order that stuff seperately. That, to me, is fucking weird. Everywhere else I go, a burger comes with fries, or chips, or at least a pickle or something. Here you just get a burger on a plate, Ok. The mock duck sliders had nothing on them, they were basically just bread sandwiches. The mock duck tacos were alright but they leaked everywhere and did not come with any kind of side, not even like a cup of salsa or a little pile of chips or anything. Service, however, was very attentive and good. Our server deserved a high five and we left a fat tip. In general though it just seemed like some trendy place you'd see in any trendy neighborhood. There is a patio with tables where you can smoke cigs, if that's your thing, you'll probably love it. I hate to be a prick but "Meh, I guess it was OK" pretty much sums it up. Really great service is what saved the whole thing.

I've never been disappointed with the food. I've been delighted with with everything I've ever ordered. My favorite dish on the menu used to be the Breakfast Poutine, but they updated their menu and do not offer that dish now. So I guess my new favorite is the Pork Belly Breakfast Hash. AND the basil Bloody Mary is to die for! #TopNotch

I was here late night on Saturday. Great beer list. AMAZING pizza - my mouth is watering just thinking about the Margherita pizza. I will definitely be going back to try more of the menu. Good for late night. Will update re dinner. UPDATE: Go here immediately. Not only is the decor intimate and comfortable, but the YUCCA FRIES are awesome! Plus they serve Two Gingers whiskey, my favorite. I think this will be my new go-to place. Can't wait to go back (maybe tonight)!

Sweet brunch spot and all around general hangout. Prices are reasonable; with great coffee, delicious food, AND booze, Muddy Waters' new location is one of the best places in Uptown. If I want brunch without paying $30, I go to Muddy Waters. If I need a late night snack and drink, I go to Muddy Waters. if I just want a coffee and browse the internet, I go to Muddy Waters. I wish they expanded in NE, since we sorely need something like this. My only quibble is they retired the awesome shrimp po'boy for a softshell crab banh mi. The flavor of the banh mi is good, but they use the tiniest crabs, so half the sandwich is bread and veggies. Bring back the po'boy and use bigger softshell crabs! It's rare for a business to straddle between coffee shop, restaurant, and bar but Muddy Water's has done it.

I have been looking forward to going to this place since I moved to Uptown...the interior is so cool, very hip and modern twist. I went for dinner - as the menu looked interesting, of course when it came time to order I couldn't decide and ending up choosing the Fish Tacos (starter) - which was two big flour tortilla tacos, but the fish was tempura (deep fried) and too greasy...also the waitress recommended the Yuca Fries - which were good and had a good dipping sauce, but again very greasy. I barely ate any of my food and should have just ordered their pizza and dessert - which table next to us had and looked delicious! ALSO both my pint glass and my friends where not clean, you could see old lipstick marks on the glasses...gross. I will try this place again but will go for a lighter fair and hopefully clean glass!

Went here with some friends for the first time this weekend and what a find!!! Place was packed which is a good sign that it's going to be good. Food was amazing and so was the service. I'm normally not a dessert eater but the server insisted on the Guinness Ginger cake (or something like that) and I'm glad that she did. If you think you've had good cake before, HA! You're so wrong. This cake was seriously toe curling orgasmic! I've never wanted to devour an entire dessert in front of my friends without sharing. I never push food or desserts on people but I'm not kidding, it was amazing! Mad props to the pastry chef (yes, they have their very own pastry chef).

I was here from out of town last weekend and had the fish tacos and the korean bbq tacos. The fish tacos were delicious! The fish was lightly battered and perfectly flavored - not too salty, a hint of cilantro and lime, with creamy sauce. The korean bbq tacos also had great flavor, but it was too strong for my taste. I would definitely come back here again!

While visiting my sister at the University of Minnesota, we ventured into Uptown for the evening and found our way to Muddy Waters based on a recommendation and were not disappointed. The food is delicious, but unpretentious and very approachable. The staff, who could easily appear as arrogant and condescending, are in fact welcoming and attentive, but do not hover. Whether you're looking for a great selection of beer or just good food, Muddy Waters won't let you down.

I've been a regular at Muddy Waters for some time now. Friendly service, great food and a pretty good selection of tap beers keeps me coming back. The hanger steak has always been flavorful and tender. Above all though the Bender Braised Pot Roast Sliders are my favorite. Well rounded flavor and the quality is very consistent. Keep up the good work Muddy Waters!!

Happy hour was yummy and the service is really friendly! But I was surprised that they didn't have more deals on the HH food. Black bean hummus was really fresh and beautifully displayed. I've had better yucca fries. They were a bit mushy but were well seasoned. We had two desserts the Banana pudding was delicious and they had just enough whipped cream. My favorite item was the chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. It has the best of both the chocolate and the oatmeal.

Uptown has a lot of options, but I keep finding myself back at Muddy Waters. It's a small restaurant/bar, but I've never had to wait much for a table. I had about a ten minute wait for a noon-time Sunday brunch, just long enough to grab a coffee from their full service coffee bar. Great cappuccino and my brother had what must have been home brewed green iced tea. My favorite tables are the intimate booths across from the main bar. They feel private and cozy for two or four. Check for those if you can seat yourself. There's a nice back room area too. You can watch the chef at work in the rear tables as well. Brunch was awesome - the breakfast burger was incredible- the egg was oozy, and the Hollandaise rich. The yuca fries are perfect at any time of day - especially good and starchy with a midnight beer. The Cuban dog on their dinner menu is a messy affair of salty, flavorful, but balanced goodness. The mussels were a bit of a miss, but everything else I've had has been great. Expect a trendy crowd with great food and drinks. The service has always been stellar and the prices are reasonable for uptown. My one complaint - individual bathroom!! Always a surprise when a bar this size has such a small bathroom. Oh well.

Grits with a braised Pot Roast? Yep. Good, well-apportioned Old-fashioned? Yep. Kind and attentive staff? Yep. Attractive, hip clientele worth making eyes at across the bar? Yep. Worth going to again and again to make sure you sample the entire menu and enjoy every whiskey-based cocktail know to exist? Abso-effing-lutely.

Checked out Muddy Waters for the first time last night for a friend's birthday dinner. The restaurant has a hip vibe similar to many establishments in this part of the city. The beer list is truly impressive - to the point that I had to ask the waitress for a recommendation because there were so many local brews on tap to choose from. The food took a little longer to arrive at our table than I would have expected, but then again we were there with a large party so that might be the reason. The food was the star of the show at Muddy Waters. Not only do they have an eclectic menu, but they also pull it off well - no small feat in my mind! The food arrived to our table still piping hot from the kitchen (which unfortunately is not something I experience very much when dining out around here), and it was delicious. Everyone at the table devoured their meals and exclaimed how good their choices were. I enjoyed the Yuca Fries (you gotta give 'em a try!) and homemade gnocchi made with baby spinach and served carbonara-style with egg, pancetta, and parmesan. Both were excellent! The only bummer is that they brought out cake for the birthday girl but didn't ask if the rest of us wanted to order dessert. They just brought the checks right away. I would have have gladly tried the dessert menu if only to see if it was as delicious as the dinner menu...maybe next time. Everyone that attended the dinner has decided that Muddy Waters is our new favorite place. We'll be seeing them again very soon to try everything on the menu!

Incredibly disappointed in the service received tonight. My friends and I were visiting from Canada for a Vikings game this weekend and the bar was recommended to us by our concierge. Upon arrival, one of our group was refused service based on the assumption that he was already intoxicated. The server was informed that the man in question suffered from cerebral palsy and has a limp like gait when he walks. The server refused to listen so a manager was informed of this discourtesy. The manager was quite understanding however we never received an apology or service thereafter so we refused to give our business and walked across the street to Herkimer where we received pleasant service, beverages and had a comfortable enjoyable evening. Extremely disappointing that my friend who has suffered from this disability for 25 years still deals with such attitude. He is a kind and gentle person who dislikes confrontation so it was put on his friends to stand and speak for him and the server refused to apologize. We will never return to this establishment and recommend against it whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Walked into Muddy Waters not knowing it was going to be my new favorite!! Awesome atmosphere...relaxing, casual...loved the copper bar!! Our bartender was awesome enthusuastically offering great beer suggestions and making sure we were taken care of without being obtrusive! We ordered the burger of the moment which had swiss cheese, avocado mousse and bits of bacon... perfectly cooked burger with a perfect combination of the other ingredients... seriously outstanding!! We also had a side of fries which were yummy and I would get them again...they came with a side of herbed aioli...yes...yum. and what's the best way to eat your brussels sprouts? How about fried...so tasty. Thank you Muddy Waters we absolutley can't wait to return!!!!!

This place was recommended by BF who had stumbled here on a night out with the boys. I went for a night out with the girls and it was a great surprise! For some reason I expected Muddy Waters to be a quiet coffee house instead the place was hopping! It is a very crowded and buzzing restaurant, with a bakery corner and a long bar that serve all kinds of beers (but not german lagers but those seem almost impossible to find here in the Midwest). When I got there the place was stuffed, but the tables were turning fast so I got a table for two in a couple of minutes. My friend joined me and I order a beer and she order a gin and tonic. I asked the server for a german style lager and she told me they didn't really have anything like that, but she could bring me samples of things I could like. She brought two different beers and I ordered one of the two. We also asked what fries we should order (they have regular, polenta and yucca) and she suggested the yucca ones. The yucca fries are the best fries ever! I could have dined on those alone! Loved them! It is the kind of dish you go back to a restaurant for. Then I had the soft crab bahn mi and my friend had the soup of the day. The sandwich was OK, but not to die for and my friend seemed to think her soup was a bit too cheesy. Anyway I do not want to sound like a downer, but while the food was more than OK it was not to die for great, especially after the yucca fries had raised my expectations. I will be back for a drink with friends and try some other food.

They have a DJ on the weekend mornings, I've never seen that before. I love this place even though sometimes I feel like I'm not cool enough to even go here. Everyone is always sitting at the bar sipping straight whiskey and I'm always just excited to eat my chicken wings. I assume everyone works for City Pages or something. Everyone is cool but not in an annoying pretentious way, one day I hope I can live up to the coolness of this bar. I don't think I've ever ordered a drink besides Surly Coffee Bender or a bloody mary here. Most bars don't have Coffee Bender, let alone Coffee Bender on tap, I get giddy just thinking about it. Sometimes they run out of the coffee bender, which is always a bummer but once we mixed their coldpress coffee with regular bender and it tasted even better, but was a little bit of a bummer when we saw the bill. The bloody marys are delicious too. Usually my glutinous self judges a bloody on its skewer and condiments, but Muddy Water's simple basil infused vodka bloodys beat a fat filled Wisconsin bloody mary anyday. The basil vodka sometimes reminds me of pasta sauce but its still so perfect, I want one now. The food is great as well. I love the bbq mock duck tacos, florentine benedict, wasabi green beans, and the habenero chicken wings. I shouldn't have written this post while I was hungry... Warning: the wings are VERY spicy. It hurts so good the whole time you eat them. They are perfect for people who like spicy food, and aren't afraid of what their butthole will endure the next day.....yeah, I went there. The environment is nice, great adjective, I know. They play good music and it's never too loud to talk. It's my favorite place to go late at night after work for a few drinks. I'd feel weird getting drunk here though, but maybe that's because I'm not cool enough. The staff is a little hit or miss on service, but everyone is at least nice. There is one guy that is a server who is super cool, he wears big glasses and I think has a funny mustache. He was only my server once, but when we left he shook all of our hands like we had just became best friends or something. I used to be a server, I know server BS but this was after we left our tip, this guy was geniunely awesome.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't get better than coffee, *really good* food/desserts, and booze, all under one roof. I've been here a handful of times. Their coffee is always tasty (which I already knew from the previous location). Their desserts (I'm a bit of a dessert junkie) are top notch. I can't resist the banana cream pie. Food... I've had the rock shrimp po boy, the pear and brie sandwich, a veggie pizza (it had pears and pecans on it... wow!), fries, and the black bean hummus plate. Not all at the same time, mind you. But none disappointed. The pear and brie was probably the best because i'm a sucker for croissants... but the black bean hummus plate shouldn't be missed even if you aren't a grass-eating hippie. Ask for a Bloody with the cucumber vodka or the basil vodka. You won't be disappointed. I will definitely be going back to Muddy's again and again.

Good grunge, great coffee and even a feel of retro. There are a lot of coffee shops all vying for a unique identity. Muddy Waters with its 80's video game options, board games and casual laid back staff gives you a feeling of belonging regardless of age or social status. There is an excellent selection of teas and coffee. Quarters are a little tight but worth a good evening of conversation and hot beverages.

I frequented the old Muddy Waters, so the newer, hipper, darker version had me a bit skeptical. Yeah, I was totally wrong. The first time I came here was for a date. As were the next three, honestly. It's blocks from my house, and a perfect place to sit, drink, eat and chat. Both the inside and the patio envelop you. It makes me feel like I'm both in a hip bar and having a totally private evening. I've also started coming here to work and write, and it's a great place for that as well. The staff lets you sit as long as you want, there's ample outlets, and the booths are good places to tuck away. The service is always great. There are nights I go in there to write by myself, and sit at a table for 4 or 5 hours. The server checks on me once an hour, makes sure I have everything I need and even chats with me a bit so I don't feel lonely. Service is quick, and once they forgot to bring me a beer for 15 minutes, and didn't charge me for it. I didn't ask, it was only 15 minutes, but that wasn't acceptable to the server. I really appreciated that she was so attentive. Inside is dark with lamps at every table that give it a candlelit feel. The left wall is lined with booths, and the front is an array of low tables. The bar is a centerpiece of the room, and has that old wood feel of a much more established place. Though it's often loud, it doesn't feel loud, and it's easy to get lost in conversation. The patio has a secret garden appeal to it. It's most like Crema's, with the tall walls and iron fence in the front. You have to enter and exit from the building, so there's not a lot of wandering in and out by people passing on the street. That's nice. The beer list is comprehensive and reasonably priced. It's not the mile long tap list of the Bulldog, but the ambiance makes it a much more preferable place. They also have a full bar, with an array of choices. The food has been fantastic as far as I've experienced. I've had fries, fish tacos, the pear and brie panini, and a cheeseplate so far. I'm so in love with the fish tacos, though, that I'm not sure I'll ever order anything else. The fish is perfectly fried, the sauce is fantastic, and the slaw is crisp and light. The cheese plate had a great selection of cheeses as well as accompaniments. There are no words for how tasty my sandwich was. I approve. I can't wait to delve a little deeper into the menu, honestly! As far as a good neighborhood hang out, date place, place to work that is cleaner and nicer than Common Roots? This is the place to go. It's my Lyn-Lake go-to, and will remain that way.

The ambiance of this place seduced me as I was enveloped in the sound of Bruce Springsteen and the E-street Band crooning over the bar stereo system. This place is COOL. The kind of cool that's characterized by an atmosphere that marries old and new, that feel on-trend while simultaneously belonging to the neighborhood. If I would have rated Muddy Waters on the ambiance alone, it would have killed five stars no problem. Unfortunately, my experience with the menu hasn't been as exciting. Maybe I'm just ordering the wrong thing or maybe this place's cuisine just isn't my style, but I've been underwhelmed by each of the dishes I've tried. Disappointing dish one was a panzella salad that was Drenched with a capital D in so much dressing that the veggies feel limp. Disappointing dish two was the mexicali dog that was surprising tasteless and perhaps the driest dog I've ever eaten. And my third disappointment, was a lackluster brat. Usually, a consistently 'meh' dining experience drives me away BUT the effortless atmosphere of this place has me coming back for more regardless. Have a suggestion for what entree would WOW me? Please share. :)

ambiance/drink selection = great. food = eh. I have eaten there twice. Each time the bread has over powered the insides. The brie/pear croissant has a scant appearnace of both; the softshell crab bohn mi, while good, also was over taken by the bread, where a standard bohn mi is about both the quality bread AND its ingredients. The location is beautiful, the patio is great (although the chairs are not friendly to bare legs or the chains/keys on belts of the patrons that frequent the establishment). All in all, I like it but do not love it. The food needs tweaking. The ingredients and mixtures are quality and taste good but for al la carte it needs to be a bit more about what is in the sandwich than just the bread.

Popped in to get some real coffee while waiting for wife to shop. It was 2 pm, so I figured a place that per Yelp prided itself on coffee and has signage proclaiming itself a coffee house as well as a restaurant would cheerfully accommodate someone there just for coffee. There were still a lot of folks lunching the day after Christmas, so I sat at a small bar-like table near the window. The good news was that the medium latte ($3.25) was huge and really good. However, it took forever to arrive, and the two waitresses who tag teamed my table both seemed visibly irritated that that's all I wanted. Then, when I had to go, I couldn't get anyone's attention. Upon going to the register, a nice young woman explained only my vanished server could process my check. I ended up with no choice but to leave a $5 on the table, fearful I was reinforcing poor behavior.

Sitting at the bar at Muddy Waters is one of my favorite ways to spend any happy hour. My girlfriend doesn't like to drink like I do but she can order a delicious cup of handcrafted coffee while I put back my vodka cocktails and we are both perfectly content. The french fries here may be the best in the cities. My only complaints about this place are the bar staff. Some of them are great but there are a few that seem to be completely void of personality and don't seem interested in anything other than making a buck... The servers in the cafe are great though.

A little overrun with heavy bearded dudes in shorts and black work boots, but whatever. I always forget my arm sleeve tattoo when I go. A solid, creative menu. I could eat that pear & brie croissant sandwich for days. Fish tacos were a little weak - very little fish and overloaded with coleslaw. It's a little uncertain when you first walk in - is there a host? Do you seat yourself? So I've always ended up at the bar. It's always been busy when I'm there, but never loud. Much more mellow than nearby Lyndale Taphouse or the Herkimer. That's what I like about it. I haven't had a chance to hit the patio yet, but I'd like to before summer's out.

This place is my go-to weekend brunch spot. If you get there early enough, you can usually walk in and find a table or booth; if you show up any time past noon you might have to wait a bit before being seated. This mainly holds true when it's cold out, in the summer they open up their patio so there is a lot more seating. My usual order is the Elvis waffle, which is a Belgian waffle drizzled with peanut butter syrup, and topped with a light whipped cream, sliced fresh bananas, and BACON bits (now drooling as I type this). So damn good. Just the thought is enough to get me out of bed on the weekends. Pair this with a Muddy's Cubano Latte, and life couldn't get any better. I've also sampled other items with my brunch dates, and other dishes have been solid as well. I have visited for dinner, also tried a few small plates which I found were pretty OK, but none of the dinner options really blew my mind. This place also has an awesome tap beer selection, with lots of local options. The atmosphere is casual, and just a little hip. The prices are also great - you can enjoy a breakfast meal for roughly about $11-12, including a coffee or espresso drink. Friendly service, and the food is always served promptly. I look forward to enjoying many more Elvis waffle mornings here.

I know a thing or two about craft beer bars, and it didn't take me long to fall deeply in love with Muddy Waters. Once you step inside the door and your eyes fall upon the gloriously long bar lined with tap handles, you'll be hypnotically drawn in and will never want to leave. It's not just quantity with the beer list, either. There are plenty of bars in town (you know who you are) with a pile of mediocre taps, but one the reasons Muddy Waters gets 5-stars from me is that they don't just fill their list with whatever is readily available and cheap. They get the good stuff, and they focus heavily on the local scene (they're one of the only Minneapolis spots I know of that carries Steel Toe brews) with the likes of Surly, Fulton and Harriet. I would've been just fine at the bar with nothing more than the incredible beer lineup, but I've also eaten here and was pleasantly surprised. The pork chop was prepared perfectly and the wings were quite good as well. The french fries, as others have mentioned, should not be missed. The service at the bar can be slow at times, but the table service was great. We sat on the patio and took our time. My glass never sat empty for long, our food didn't take long, and we weren't rushed out the door. Sweet. I know a lot of people that avoid going uptown simply because parking can be a pain (and expensive), which is why I love LynLake. There's a big lot directly behind Muddy Waters (you turn in right next to the Jungle Theater) and it's $1 per hour. You can't beat that with a stick. Awesome beers? Check. Great food? Yep. Good service? You betcha. Ample parking? OK, you get the idea... Muddy Waters has it all - go there tonight. Cheers,

The soba noodle salad was pretty bad. The lobster poutine and fried brussel sprouts were both tasty but very greasy. Seating is very crowded, and we were a little cold seated near the door on a cold day. Our server gave odd, almost hostile, service and we heard the table next to us comment that he made them feel awkward as well.

I've always only been for breakfast/bloodies, but it's fab! Compliments to the chef for the effort to provide a quality menu, with organic ingredients. They offer Gluten-free as well! You can really taste a difference in their food - it's so fresh tasting! I especially recommend the Breakfast Poutine...... whoa. crazy delicious. For the bloody mary's I always go for the basil vodka that they offer - perfectly compliments a bloody! The new spot is great! There's a secluded patio on the side that's really nice. Overall good place! food. booze. coffee.

Updating a five-star review with another five-star review... I still stand by everything in my old review, but I just to add a few notes garnered over more than a baker's dozen worth of visits. 1. THE BLOODY MARY. You can get it with regular vodka or basil-infused vodka. Either way, it's the perfect spiciness and I love it. How is this drink not featured in "Best of" lists yet? 2. AGAIN, THE FRIES. Not the yucca fries---the regulars are where it's at. These crispy critters are perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned and dusted with fresh parsley. I might have to use the word "best" for the second time in this update. I always always ask for chimichurri on the side for dipping because it's my fave (the regular sauces it comes with are good too). 3. THE BEER RELEASES. The bar is a beer bar (dozens of good taps), and they have beer release events on the regular that will give you a chance to learn more about the particular brewery, often from the brewers themselves. I love stuff like this. 4. THE FOODS. Yes, the savory food is delish. Fish tacos, Surly Bender pot roast sliders, burgers, pizzas, SALAD (seriously, the Muddy's Chop Salad is amazing and I'm not even a salad person). Don't sleep on the pastry case either. Those made-from-scratch sweets are there for you. 5. THE COFFEES. They know how to make coffee well, and that's all I ask for. If you're lucky enough to snag a coffee bar seat, bully for you. I've still never been up there because it's always full. The only thing that could make this place better is if they knocked out a wall and commandeered the other patio to their left too, because it does get very crowded in here on the weekends.

I've now been to MW twice for brunch. Both times I was pleased with what I ordered-- but not blown away by any stretch. I've now had the Chorizo Hash and the Breakfast Quesadilla...For those that love this place, I am wondering if I need to go at dinner time to achieve the full effect? Either way, like many Uptown spots, MW has good food that is overpriced for what you get. Since it's kind of the standard around here I guess I can't blame them, but a restaurant that charges $10+ for a burger and then another $4+ for fries is always a little obnoxious in my book. On the bright side, as brunch places go-- I've yet to see this place packed, I enjoy sitting outside and I've never had to wait for a table.

There's nothing like a Muddy Bloody to kick off a morning on the weekend. Be careful when you walk in because the cozy environment may lend you an invitation to stay a little too long. Before you know, you'll be cruising the dinner menu hoping to find something that will absorb the day's libations. I ordered the Wet Burrito with chorizo ($10). It arrived in a bath of enchilada sauce and was stuffed with protein & rice. The sauce has a smokey flavor you find in some enchilada sauces so be ready for a full flavor.

Admittedly, I've been to Muddy Waters before and had a very average time due to the too cool to be here waitress. However! We went back a couple times, once for brunch and once for beers at the bar. The bartender was excellent and extremely versed in all things beer. Taught us about sours and had extensive knowledge about seasonal small craft lines as well. Brunch was good, the billionaire bacon is amazing and you must get it, the rest of the food was just okay, needs a little attention seemed really rushed.

Not really a critical update (I absolutely adore this place, that doesn't seem likely to change in the near future), but since I'm compiling the results of my Bahn-mi Binge, felt I should add Muddy's Soft Shell crab bahn-mi. Because seriously, it's a soft shell crab bahn mi. Awesome! It was good, though perhaps unsurprisingly not as authentic. When I think of bahn mi, I don't even focus much on what the primary protein is. To me, it's that combination of pickled vegetables, cilantro & jalapeno that really make the bahn mi. It's a little bit spice, a little bit sour and a little bit . . .cilantro (okay, didn't know where to go with that). But hey, I had a couple great beers as well, so I was doing great.

The food we had here was pretty good. I got the veggie burger. It appeared to be overly cooked, kinda charred but it tasted really yummy with a little spicy kick and it had a good texture - not mushy, yay! The french fries with aioli were really really tasty. The whole table liked them! My three friends enjoyed their food, too! I liked the dinner food a little better than brunch I had a few months back but I'd go back for either. Good beer selection, too which is always a plus! Yay to the Oregon Beer / Deschutes love! :)

Second time - same mussels, yucca fries, and pinot noir. Amazing food, and even better atmosphere! In the summer MW has a gorgeous alley patio and awesome opening windows from the inside. I can't get enough of this place, guess i'll have to return to get something else off of the menu...

Just tried this place out and was impressed. We had the short ribs and a gluten free pizza. The food was great!! Nice atmosphere. Service was fantastic! I'll be coming back for sure!!

SUPER hipster place, but the service is terrific and the yucca fries are as delicious as everyone says they are. Cool patio seating a bonus.

All out of 5 stars: Butcher's steak 5 stars Smelt po'boy 4 stars Yuca fries 3 stars Bacon maple muffin 1 star Our guy waiter was pretty blah: no smiling, no talking... should not be waiting tables but sitting in front of a computer. I give Muddy waters 4 stars because I feel that they know what they are doing and they doing it pretty well (except for that waiter).

So one Sunday afternoon, thought a good place for a coffee drink would be here, of all places, instead of Herkimer. Go to the bar, address bartender who has been very busy conversing with seated friends at her bar, and ask for two coffee drinks, two Jamaican coffee's; precisely. Bartender: " I don't know how to make that." Me: It's a coffee drink with bacardi rum and Tia Maria, and coffee." Bartender: "OK, but we have table service; do you have a table?" Me: "Yes, we'll sit over there and you can have them brought over." After a bit, I get up from the table and dash to the bar, to request whip cream on top of the coffee drinks, just in case she didn't have a clue. "OK" she says. The Jamaican coffee's are brought to us by the waitress, and they are in 16 ounce pint glasses, filled to the top, and with whip cream! Me: "They are supposed to be in coffee glasses." Waitress: "These ARE our coffee glasses." Me: "oh." The drinks are insipid, of course. We get ready to leave and I bring my still full pint glass of a coffee drink to the bartender. Me: "Excuse me, do you know a coffee drink doesn't go in a pint glass, it goes in a smaller glass, like a coffee cup?" Bartender: " OK." Me, to be sure she understood: " Coffee drinks don't go in a beer glass." Bartender: "OK." That's all she could muster, in response to my statement. Wow, this place is so hip - a full bar, and specializing in coffee, with not a clue how to mix a coffee drink, or how to treat customers. So we leave. And I am asking myself... "WTF kind of place is this?"

Muddy's seems to have worked out any and all kinks that I may have shown concern for closer to their opening as a full bar and restaurant. The food is perfect. There really isn't anything that I've had that isn't just really good. Even something as simple as their pear and brie croissant is just a delight. A SHEER DELIGHT! Awesome beer selection, great cocktails, lovely service, and they have completely pulled it off as far as their "rustic-sheik-airy but still cozy" atmosphere goes. They deserve a lot more of my business, and probably yours as well.

This is my absolute favorite bar in uptown. The vibe is low key. The people are eclectic, interesting and sometimes attractive. Whenever I feel like a low key night out the default choice is muddy waters frequently followed by the VFW. What can I say? I'm a creature of habit. My only gripe is the one time I ate here it sort of sucked. Our waitress was totally brain dead. She didn't listen or remember anything we asked for. She brought the wrong beer and forgot my wine. Then she screwed up my order. By that point the food had to taste like it came from the heavens for it to be satisfactory. It did not. I had the pear and brie sandwich which was a lot, A LOT greasier than I expected or would have liked. All in all I still love it for a bar, just not for a restaurant. Try the black box pinot grigio. Yes it comes from a box and it's $4 a glass but I still like it!

Yea beer list! Yea delicious food! Yea friendly (though at times slow) service! I have been to Muddy Waters twice now and I can't wait to go again. I am a wannabe beer nerd, so I enjoy furrowing my brow as I contemplate the very serious choice of what beer to consume. Their menu is short but includes Brussels sprouts and GOD DAMN I love me some Brussels sprouts! I wish their burgers came with fries, but that is the only bummer. Lovely.

I am so glad they got kicked out of their old space. I can't imagine not picking this place among the other similar bar/restaurants around (Lyndale Tap, Herkimer). A reprieve from the bros! After this weekend, I am obsessed with their bloody mary. Make sure you ask for the basil vodka. Not too spicy or bland, I finished mine in less time than I'd like to admit. Their tap list is nothing to sneeze at, either. They always have interesting new releases from my favorite breweries. Adapting to the neighborhood, they've got a killer vegan menu. I was really impressed with a stir fry I had there once and the hummus plate is delicious. I can't wait to try the banh mi and North African tempeh. I like that you could spend a whole day here: a pastry & coffee in the morning, sandwich for a working lunch/linner, then beers with friends until bar close. The atmosphere is conducive to each part of the day, at least if you like cozy and intimate. The DJ is always spot-on with the tunes too. Saturday morning cartoons are also a great addition to weekend brunch. It's my goal for 2012 to get over here more often!

Aww hot damn. This place rocks my socks. This place has a fantastic crowd. Mature enough yet chatty and seriously into their beer and food. Compared to Tap house next door, this is like Dead Poet's society. Next, this place was built by beer and food snobs that don't charge snobby prices. First off, 30 beers on tap? Surly galore, Stone's, Edmund Fitz, Dirty Bastards all over. Yum, they really did a number at the bar. Second, they seriously embrace the gastropub concept. I had two hot dogs and yucca fries. The twin hot dogs were awesome and went well with the concoction beer I had. The yucca fries need work. As said, too fat and need a different dip other than chimmichurra. Only real downside was the wait, which I didn't mind. The place was packed but I can understand why, I thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I will certainly return soon Mr. Waters!

I love Muddy. We watched for months as they redesigned the space. The cool open seating at the windows and then the skylights and high back booths along the wall. We couldn't wait for this place to open! It is a staple in our rotation...for breakfast, lunch, happy hour, dinner, drinks, or desserts. There is something amazing on the menu for any occasion. Breakfast Pizza & Breakfast Burrito are a perfect way to mix up your usual egg routine. And I rarely get past the Fish Tacos, they are so good. While my appreciation of the large beer selection is limited to enjoying the fact it keeps the Beau entertained and drinking, I can say their selection is very impressive! He does chat with the bartenders about them and they offer him tastes as he goes. The beau loves beer. I never made it to the original, although I hear this one is very different. The coffee bar is great with delicious treats. The staff has always been friendly to us and somewhat chatty if they aren't already talking to their friends, or co-workers that are there despite their day off. Truly, a great place to have within walking distance! In fact, I think I'm going to go there for breakfast tomorrow.......

I tried this restaurant for the first time last week. It was pretty good. I wasn't impressed with the amount of choices on the menu. There is only one side of a page for appetizers, entrees, sides and desserts; although they do have a decent variety of drinks. I had a black bean burger which tasted good. No sides come with a burger meal so you have to order some separately if you want fries or anything. They had a few specials that weren't on the menu the server told us about which adds a few more options at least. The restaurant is quite small and squeezing by people during a busy time is probably expected here since there's not too much space. It feels cramped trying to walk in and out of the restaurant. The atmosphere is pretty chill which is nice. The service is great and our server was very attentive. Parking is what is to be expected in uptown.. had to park a couple blocks away and pay for the street parking. I didn't hate it here but I don't know if I will necessarily come back. I think there are better places to go than this one.

Came here on a Friday evening and it was pretty packed around 6pm. Ate at the bar and ordered these items: 1. Steamed mussels - great broth, mussels were not overcooked and was accompanied by a thick wedge of grilled focaccia cake. Yes, I say cake because that's how it looked. Unfortunately, this dish was delivered lukewarm. Request that you get them steaming hot. 2. Fish tacos - I'd pass on these. The breading was way too thick and heavy. Could not taste the fish, hmm... White cream sauce was flat and it was served on a flour tortilla that was a bit rubbery. This dish was served at room temp. 3. Red velvet cupcake - yum! Not too sweet. It was moist and had the right amount of cream cheese frosting on top. 4. Coffee bender - divine... The food, average. People watching, good. Random conversations at the bar, hilarious!

I adore Muddy Waters. It's getting a little pathetic, whenever planning a date destination with friends I shamefully ask if we can just go to Muddy Waters another time. I love it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. On my last visit I went for brunch with a friend and we decided to split a couple of things. We got the breakfast pizza that you can pick the toppings, we chose sausage and onions. The pizza came out and it was huge, like split between four people huge. It was so excellent though that we ate almost all of it. We also split the French Toast Bread Pudding, having never met a bread pudding I didn't like, I knew I had to try Muddy Water's version. It did not disappoint. It was served warm with syrup and a big glob of whipped cream. I have to give a special shout out to the bloody mary at Muddy Waters. The spice level is PERFECT! I like my bloodies spicy and not too thick and this bloody meets my criteria. Service is always top notch, friendly and attentive. The food and drinks are great and you won't spend your whole pay check in a visit. So worth a weekly visit.

The menu here has wonderful options for all food preferences including gluten free, vegan, etc. I had a special with ahi tuna, capers and some sort of fancy sliced sausage and it was incredible. It's a wine bar / coffee shop / bar - whatever you want. Easy parking in meter lot behind restaurant. Service was outstanding. I was there on a Monday night but it was still a pretty busy.

OK, this place may have been coined "the hippy place" but it's anything but (ok yeah, there's some hipsters there but that's like 51% of Uptown). Despite multiple managers--this is the one instance where there are NOT "too many cooks in the kitchen" Food: Spot on! Bigger than "small plates" and not "massive, need a doggie bag" dishes. Must tries: fish tacos (amazing!), the shrimp po'boy was changed to soft shell po'boy, still good. The steak with fries and the chimmichurri sauce--to die for! They USED to have the best desserts--banana cream pies and cinnamon cardamon puffs (only 50 cents each) but Chef Jack Riedel stole their pastry chef :( and now desserts are just ok. Great place to make your own stomping ground--great for brews with friends, a cocktail alone, or dinner with friends.

Went there as a friend had suggested it was a really great place to eat. We walked in and wasn't sure if we sat ourselves or not so we waited close to the door as the bar was full and we looked around for some assistance. The wait staff just walked around without making eye contact to acknowledge us. One of the staff members from the back area seemed to waive as he was acknowledging us and I waived back thinking OK someone is going to come over and help. He continued in our direction then proceeded to sit with someone at the bar in front of us to talk with them. We left after about 5 min of just standing there feeling completely ignored. The place wasn't even that busy. The tables in the front were maybe half full. It just definitely was not a warm welcoming. Not impressed at all and will never return again.

Enjoyed a post theater nosh and cocktails at Muddy Waters. I liked the old school Moscow Mule and the Dark and Stormy. We had a decadent sampling of the chocolate cake with bourbon sauce (I want to try the the ginger cake next time) and the polenta fries which were delicious! Despite being packed we had very pleasant service.

the fish tacos are fine. the fried chicken thighs are fine too but 13 bux is disgusting considering the blue cheese slaw is awful and for some reason really accentuates how bad chicken thigh is for you. they need to balance it out. umm yeah basically everything is fine. the side patio tho

Have only been in late evenings between 8-Midnight. Note: the espresso bar closes at 10pm which to me is early. It is not loud even when it is full in the dining room. With a full Batista bar and the amount of Surly options it is our new favorite place. The price is very reasonable. The atmosphere is fantastic, not that over pretentious like the Calhoun/Hennepin area has become. The food is fantastic and the servers are always friendly and helpful, just all around awesome. It's hard to recommend any specific foods because everything we have had has been amazing!

We stopped in for a drink after dinner on Friday night. We somehow lucked out on finding a table because within 5 minutes they were all taken. The beer list...wowza. Humongous. Our server was awesome & made a lot of good recommendations. I definitely want to come back for food!

I'll be honest, I was extremely skeptical to go here since I really loved the old spot, but all it took was entering the place to know that I loved it. Been here three times now in the last 1.5 weeks. Once for brunch, once for late night nibbles and once just for drinks. The patio spot is quite possibly my favorite in the cities. Just perfect. So for my brunch visit I had the Breakfast Poutin, which was absolutely scrumptious! The right mix of potatoes, onion, minced ham, and gravy. I could eat this every day. For my late night nibbles session, I ordered their cheese plate, which had a blue, a more flavorful than expected goats, and a gruyere, along with 2 different mustards (one sweet, one tart), honey, grapes, toasted baguette and strawberries. I also sampled my friends chicken wings which were yummy. All in all, I see myself frequenting this place a lot.

Most menu items are consistently delicious. The only thing to avoid is the breakfast sandwhich that feels like a weak addition to an otherwise stellar menu. Always great staff who are friendly, timely and harder to find a cooler patio or place for a drink in Minneapolis.

My partner and I are saving money so are enforcing a strict "no Muddy Waters" rule for the month. And it's necessary, because we LOVE this spot. We're usually in 1 to 3 times a week - he gets one of the specials (there's usually a pizza special and a fish special), I get the butcher's steak, the cheeseburger or the mussels. The menu changes seasonally, but they've hung onto those three (I still miss the cheesy grits from last summer). Generally great service (if sometimes a bit slow when it's busy), great atmosphere, great crowd. But really, we come back for the food. Don't tell them this, but they're not charging nearly what they could for this quality.

Great atmosphere. Friendly staff. OUTSTANDING selection of tap beers. Always changing. Coffee shop side is great. Their pastry chef is RIDICULOUS. If you just want breakfast, a light snack, or dessert, DO IT. You will not be disappointed. Their patio is AMAZING in spring, summer, & fall. PRO TIP: Get a plate of chicken-fried bacon. It's not on the menu, but it's do-able. PRO TIP: Go with the daily pizza special. Always great. And their breakfast pizza is also AWESOME.

I was all excited for the bloody mary....meh, not so much. The server could have cared less. We could not get out of there soon enough. It seemed like they just wanted our table back so they could seat another party. Disappointing.

This place opened a mere days ago and yet the staff already has an attitude? Not good guys! Luckily what their 'tude is about, could and will land them in some legal hot water. Take note new location Muddy...You may be in the new kid on the block, but you have to obey a LOT of rules set forth by the city of Minneapolis. When you don't, there are people out there that will ensure you do. What could have turned into a great night of dinner, drinks, and coffee was ruined by your staff's lack of knowledge/ignorance. It's too bad for you; because, of the greatness of social media people are able to share their stories to not only their friends & family, but now others. Here is the deal...the staff thought they were knowledgable about certain things, but weren't. Instead, they were cocky, rude, and "put out" when asked. Last time I checked, an 18 CAN NOT drink, yet the table next to us had two of them doing that. Awkward. Not really. Calling MPLS police! So, before you ride off into the sunset on your mini high horses, remember back to the day when you were a humble coffee shop and those patrons that made you who you are TODAY; because, my guess is, based on your heinous customer service, you will be another splash in the short lived Uptown "scene" life. Cheers to you and the lack of customer service you currently have. You will need all the help you can get. To the people reading this...THING TWICE. If you look for an enjoyable fun place, this is not the place for you. The staff was rude and confused on more aspects. PLEASE avoid this place. What is great on the eye is horrible on the soul. Stick to Lyndale Tap, Herk, VFW, Tiger Sushi, or anything else around it!

Ok - I must like it because I went twice in 3 days... I was quite surprised when I saw the new location of Muddy Waters was open last week. We walked by just a couple weeks ago and peered in at which point they didn't seem anywhere even close to opening. We strolled up last Thursday to split an ap and have a beer. Unfortch we had missed happy hour (only goes until 5pm) but looking over the hh menu it appears they have excellent deals on wine ( a red and a white for $2.75!) and some cheap beer. The beer selection is great, they have all the available Surlys! The menu has a little something for everybody including veg options. Most stuff is under $10. We split the sausage bread which was really like a massive calzone. It was tasty although the tomato sauce for dipping could've been spicier or the sausage or both. We went back Saturday to see what brunch was all about. Great coffee (with very prompt refills). Excellent blueberry/banana muffin. A-mazing breakfast pizza! We couldn't eat it all, probably could've had a 3rd person split the pizza with us... Not bad for $12. A couple of my pals went late night Friday, yes they are open until 2. And yes, they do indeed have a patio. Apparently once their awnings come in they'll have sidewalk seating too. Service/aesthetic/overall vibe/hang factor = all great in my opinion. Love the dark wood and the lantern light fixtures. Good music. Friendly staff. Oh also they designed it right with plenty of electrical outlets so you can plug in your CPU just about anywhere you please.

I'm torn. Muddy Waters has been my favorite coffeeshop forever. Now, I haven't had coffee here in at least two months. The food and beer is too damn good. I live a couple blocks from Muddy's - and I find myself going here all of the time now. The food is insanely good for the price - fish tacos, pot roast sliders, hummus, pork... I haven't had anything I don't like. The servers on the patio have been stellar. Couldn't be better. Sara rocks at the bar. Overall, this is my new favorite Uptown spot. My only complaint about the place is that twice I have sat in the bar area (not at the bar) and have been ignored for at least 5-10 minutes (one time five, one time ten - no exaggeration). Both times I ended up moving to get service - one time to the bar, one time to the patio. After that, it was perfect.

The patio at Muddy Waters is where I want my ashes spread when I die from a Hendricks overdose. I want to live on amongst the too hip to care, the so tattooed they're unemployable, and the craft beer drinking handlebar mustachios. I want to be an immortal part of the last restaurant in this goddamn city that doesn't look at you sideways if you ask for an ashtray. Yes, I still smoke...oh, that bothers you? Awesome. Go to Agra Culture and dine on kale salad and your own self righteousness. You will not be missed. I love the pear and brie sandwich and when I'm feeling saucy I throw some cottage bacon on that bitch. I don't even have to feel like a fat ass for it because the sandwich comes with a side salad. Fuckin' fancy. The french fries are what all french fries should aspire to be - crispy, a little salty, and artery clogging. The hummus platter is alright, it's a good pre-getting wasted snack. Something to stick to your gut so you're not tossing your cookies in front of some hot chick in an Iggy Pop shirt. My boyfriend loves the fish tacos and the cheese plate. And of course my hipster neckbeard loves the beer list. As for me - they've got Hendricks and that's all I need in my life. I've seen a lot of people complain about the service which is strange to me because I've always had stellar service here - on the patio, at a table inside, sitting at the bar...no issues. My guess is that the staff can smell the suburbs on you and can't be bothered to fetch you an MGD or a Mike's Hard Lemonade. Sorry, sugartits. That's Uptown for you. One more thing...try the maple bacon muffin - do not attempt to share it or your muffin experience might end in a domestic disturbance call.

I think this bar is for a specific type of cool person who likes loud music while drinking craft beers. I.e., not me. This bar feels trendy without trying too hard, the servers are attentive, the bathroom is clean, and the beer selection is OK. Cocktails are average in a very average way. So if you want to look at and sit with cool people and drink and not talk, go to Muddy Waters. I like to be louder than music, when I'm drinking craft beer.

Love this place! The service is exceptional (you have to remember that it's a bar/coffee shop, not a typical restaurant), as is the variety of beers on tap. The Korean mock duck tacos have ruined me for all other tacos. We're fast becoming regulars here, since it's within walking distance of home.

Muddy Waters is delicious! I went on a weeknight and it was very nice and cozy on the inside. They also have an outside patio that is fun during nice weather. I got the veggie pizza of the day, which happened to be a Bloody Mary pizza. First, it was huge. This is definitely a pizza that could be shared or you will have leftovers for days. I am not complaining about the leftovers though. Second, it was really good. I wish this was a regular menu item. My friend and I also split the goat cheese wontons and they were amazing. I could eat these everyday. I have been back multiple times since this first experience, and I will continue to come back to Muddy Waters.

I recently stopped by this wonderful establishment, after driving by it for years, and found a new favorite place! The coffee here is amazing! They KNOW their coffee...really know their coffee. I ordered up the Thai Coffee, of course the biggest one they had, and let me tell you...awesome. I ordered up some yuca fries, because everyone else did, crispy and perfectly seasoned. Don't short yourself...order the yuca fries! It was a social visit, so I didn't get a chance to dive into the main menu; but the few things I did try were fantastic. Be warned, this is Uptown; so, parking can be a hassle. Plan ahead people.

Love this place! The yucca fries are awesome. Fish tacos awesome. Everything I've had has been great. Nice atmosphere. Nice dishes. Good value. Lovely outdoor patio - if you're lucky enough to get seated out there. The only downsides, and I'm getting super picky here 1 - wish they took reservations, 2 - wish they had a late night happy hour, 3 - They need a different mirror in the women's bathroom, it's like looking in a fun house mirror and way too high. Can easily be remedied by putting a full length mirror on the door or something. Like I said, they're really not even complaints. Can't go wrong with this place. We always leave happy.

I think the name of this place should be Murky Waters. We came here because of Dara's review in MM mag ~ I am not quite sure what she was so jazzed about. Maybe it is my age (40), the fact I don't smoke, or that I am a food snob because I lived in SF, but this place didn't impress. I believe first and foremost this is a bar that serves food. The annoying thing was we checked the menu before we left home on their website and when we got to the restaurant it had changed. Your website is your marketing tool - use it and keep it up to date! So the food we wanted was no longer on the menu. The food we ordered was just OK. Certainly nothing special. I had the gnocchi, which I recognize is really hard to do well, but was one of the few veg friendly options. It was heavy, floury, and greasy. I felt afterwards like I drank a bottle of oil. The flavor was fine, so that worked in its favor. The yucca fries were like eating styrofoam. I prefer Brasa's any day. Though the atmosphere is warm and cozy and I like the wood bar and booths, there are some really bad places to get seated at in here. 1. By the smoking patio door. People are going in and out, in and out, in and out. The fact that people can still smoke near doors and on patios in MN seems like such an outdated concept and it really annoys me. It has ruined many experience in this town for me and I look forward to the day when patios are taken back be people who would like to enjoy them, rather than use them for smoking and stinking up the air. There was also no curtain up around the door yet, so besides smelling the smokey folks wafting by constantly, it was COLD!. 2. The Eastern End of the Bar - hmmm these aren't seats to eat at, there are water pitchers and bar stuff taking up half the eating space and the end chair is right next to the stinky garbage can. Why is their a garbage can in the middle of a restaurant? Tacky. 3. The Eastern table near the kitchen and hallway. The people sitting here seemed to not be enjoying themselves with staff constantly walking by their table and yup - another grey garbage can placed directly opposite their table. Unappetizing. The wood booth we sat in was nice and cozy and private, I would aim for that. The staff was pleasant and kind. Bonus for that. I think if you are looking to meet up with friends, have a drink and some bar food apps, this is a fine place. If you are looking more for a good (I'm not talking high brow, I'm talking GOOD) dining experience as Dara touted, you will be disappointed. Consider this a neighborhood spot to meet your friends - I think that was what I witnessed, and that is fine. Be what you are MW, not what you think you are.

I went post dinner time for appetizers and drinks. The wings were way too salty and the service was under par. We received so so service until we asked for the check. Half hour later and no check- one member of the party got up to give the waitress money to speed up the process. She never returned with the change. The beer selection was good but seemed pricer than other places near by. Late night happy hour doesn't start till 11pm.

Exceptional brunch - outdoor seating in the summer combined with a menu filled with one choice better than the next. The wet breakfast burrito is best I have had in the city.

I've been here two times now and each time it has exceded my expectations! Great atmosphere, immense beer selection, and DELICIOUS food. Their pot roast sliders are out of this world (and make shockingly great leftovers too!) and I had their pizza last night, which might have been one of the most flavorful and delicious pizza margherita's I've ever had. It's pretty huge and I ATE THE WHOLE THING. It felt great.

Muddy Waters is my new hang out. It just opened so yeah they are still figuring out some quirks but dealing with them well. I love the staff, the food, and the amazing beer selection. The price point is amazingly cheap for what you get. The meat is from a local farm and delicious (not from Sysco which is gross). I think the clientele is awesome, I've met lots of new people just sitting at the bar and chatting. I have been going to Muddy's a few times a week now.

a little history, about 10 years ago i was introduced to a mpls hip hop artist slug (part of atmosphere). in one of his songs he speaks of muddy's and i always wondered what type of place it was. fast forward to the present day and my wife and i are driving in the LynLake area trying to figure out a local spot to eat (we were in town visiting family). we happened upon muddy waters and we were so glad we went there. damian was our server and he was legit! he recommended some great food and he was funny to boot. i'm not gonna lie, his t-shirt had a floppy disk on it and said "old school," i was a litle jealous. the yucca fries are by far the greatest fries i've ever tasted (thank you to one yelp reviewer who recommended them). being new to the place, we asked what was damian's favorite and took his suggestions. we were definitely not disappointed. the worst thing about muddy's is that it's in mpls, i live in phx. and i don't think they are going to change their location to the other side of the country. =D muddy's will definitely be a staple whenever i'm back home in mpls.

The service was pretty good. To start I was dissapointed by the beer. The reason that I choose to go to this place was that a beer website that I frequent listed it as a good place for craft beer lovers. The beer list was good but they were out of the first and second beers that I ordered. The appetizer came after the main course was served which I always find a little annoying. The menu items were very well written and looked appealing but the food was below average. I especially didn't like the pork belly sandwich I ordered. The pork was flaccid, greasy and poorly seasoned. The fries were good but I felt the sauces were poorly done. Muddy Waters is a cool atmosphere with a hip crowd but that's about it. I will not be going back.

We have been to MW several times over the past few months. Without a doubt, this is my favorite gastropub right now. The tap selection, while not the largest in town, has a great overall selection of unique beers. The food is always good--especially the brussels sprouts and roast beef. The sliders and hummus are excellent as well. The service is always great and the staff seem to know that long lost art of simple conversation with the patrons.

50% of our table liked our food..the other have didn't even want a box for leftovers. The meat/cheese plate was food..as well as the burger. The waitress was aloof. Fun, cozy place, though.

I met some friends for drinks at Muddy Waters last night. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try any food, but the drinks were nice and strong. My five star review is based almost entirely on our experience with our waitress. Despite a pretty packed bar, she was consistently checking in on us and keeping our drinks refreshed. However, what set her apart was the fact that right about 12:45ish, she pulled one of us aside and quietly asked if we were planning on driving home that night, because if we were, she would pay for a cab. Thankfully we were all headed back to a friend's place that was just up the street, but I was impressed that she asked and even more impressed that she offered to pay for our ride home. I have never ever had a waitress that's actually given a shit about the people she's serving and isn't just blindly throwing booze at them. Based on this alone, Muddy Waters has in me a fan for LIFE! :) I will DEFINITELY be back to Muddy Waters--I'm looking forward to coming during the day and trying the food.

I'm about as hipster as they come -- I work at Urban Outfitters, I have tattoos, I wear skin-tight jeans and black plastic-rimmed glasses. I can't say that I love the title, but I certainly fit the description. So, when I walked into Muddy Waters around 4pm on Monday, I felt right at home. It seemed to be a hipster-haven that specializes in serving wonderfully crafted brews and delicious food. Our server approached almost immediately and we quickly got underway with our Happy Hour merriment. I ordered a can of Fat Tire ($3) and Derek chose an Olympia ($2.) We gulped down our first brews as we perused the menu. We were a little bummed to see that there were no special deals on food, but figured we would order an app and a pizza to stave off our hunger. We picked the polenta fries ($6) and the pesto, blue cheese, walnut, and balsamic pizza ($14). We put in our food order and moved onto our next round of beer -- fancier ones this time. We had seen that Muddy Waters was featured in Growler Mag's "Kind-of-a-Big-Deal" as the Craft Beer Bar in the 612, so we thought we'd expand our horizons a bit and try something new. We both picked a few options off the beer list and asked our server about them. He told us that the list was a little out-of-date and thus, every beer we asked after was not available. So, instead, we asked him for suggestions. I listed off a few of my favorite brews -- Surly Furious, Summit Saga, Indeed Daytripper -- and asked what he would recommend. He suggested the local Steel Toe Brewing's Size 7. I took my first sip and was elated. I loved it! Derek then listed off his favorites -- Schell's Dark, New Belgium Trippel. He asked a few more questions and then grabbed a sample for Derek to try. It was no surprise that Derek loved his choice -- Dark Horse Brewing's Homo Sapien. Atmosphere Dim and cozy. There's table seating that feels more casual and is close to the coffee bar or booth seating that's a bit more intimate. Service Our server, Damian, was excellent! He was friendly, funny, and attentive and was also able to give both of us awesome beer recommendations based on other brews that we like. Presentation The fries were plated very nicely and all the food we saw coming from the kitchen looked great. Taste The polenta fries weren't our fave, but the pizza and beer were oh-so-tasty! Value for Dollars Happy Hour drink prices are great on a few select canned beers, but don't include any discount on their large selection of craft brews or on food. The $38 tab was a bit spendy for Happy Hour, but we were able to justify it this time.

Went here with a friend while in town for work and loved it! We sat at the bar and started with drinks. I had a Surly coffee stout, as I am known to do, and it was delicious and served in a glass made to look like a mug. I guess that makes it a mug. Prices were so reasonable and selection was very impressive. We shared an order of the pork sliders and they were delicious, perfectly succulent with a pickled something on top and overall just yum. At the recommendation of the bartender, I had the fish tacos and they were sooo good, some of the best I've had. The fish was breaded, but not overly so, and complimented nicely by cabbage and a delightfully light crema. Not interested in having any more caffeine, and knowing I wasn't driving, I had a glass of red wine which was, like, $4 and still more than drinkable (read: I had another one). So glad this was my one meal in Minneapolis. Maybe next year I'll get to go back for brunch.

This place has a few kinks to work out. I've visited the new location twice now. The first visit I would have to give the place one star, the service was absolutely horrible (there were six servers on and it took 15 minutes to be acknowledged and then another 10 minutes to receive drinks), the ac was out and my salad was the tiniest thing I'd ever seen. My second visit, the service was OK and the food was much improved. I kinda woofed down the pear and brie sandwich. Overall, I feel the place has great potential. The atmosphere is nice, I do love the dark wood and the bar is pretty unique as well. I like how the menu has a nice variety of bar fair and entree items with an exceptional beer list. Unfortunately, the service seems to be a real issue for them (everybody keeps mentioning the bad service in their reviews as well) it appears the servers stand around while the manager works her butt off. All in all, I'm interested to see what the place will be like in six months.

I had heard the new diggs were great; so true. I had wanted to use this spot as a first date spot (sadly, my plans were foiled and we went elsewhere; this would have been WAAAY better for a first date--or any date for that matter). Low-key vibe, but plenty to look at as well with a dark, mysterious atmosphere to it. Plenty of good beer selection with apt bartenders and waiters to provide additional knowledge. Had pizza (a veggie) and it was delicious. I want to return badly. With or without a date.

My go-to for entertaining out of town guests. Great atmosphere, fantastic menu and an impressive tap list. The polenta fries are incredible and the fish tacos are among the best I've had in the metro.

This place is great!! A little expensive but the food was really good and bottles of wine weren't too crazy. The salad with goat cheese was delicious! Fish tacos way better than shrimp poboy. Banana cream pie-stellar, can't wait to have the bread pudding next time! You have to wait on the weekends.

I really didn't think I'd like Muddy Waters new location, because I was never a fan of the coffee shop. But, wow, this is very, very different. It is beautiful inside, kind of rustic-chic? We went at like, 12, so our choices were limited. I had a Mexicali dog, with chili sauce, cilantro & bacon, and yucca fries. Both were fantastic. The tiny bit of char on the hot dog made it really great. It could have been a tad bit spicier, but it was still good. The yucca fries are really great, but I think they could be even better if they were cut a little more thin. Boy had the Muddy's Burger, it was average. We got a doughnut to-go, to split for dessert. Honestly, worst one I have ever had it my life. I took one bite and threw it away. It was like a dense dinner roll with chocolate sauce. But other than that, the experience was great. Our server was nice, the atmosphere is nice. It was a little chilly, since the dining room is right inside the door. That might suck in winter.

Love love love love love. love love some more. This restaurant is wonderful, spacious, friendly, and above all else, serves amazing food. I first came here for Sunday brunch with a friend. It was easy finding seats, and our server was fast and super chummy/chatty, which I appreciate. I chose the breakfast poutine, and the french toast bread pudding to share with my friend. The poutine was unique because it had home fries versus french fries as its foundation, but the rest of the components were pretty classic poutine. The cheese curds were gooey and salty. I do think it was a tad oversalted because of the ham, but it was delicious nonetheless. My friend said his burger was perfectly cooked. But the star for me was the french toast bread pudding. OMFG, it's epic. It kinda reminds me of Wilde Roast's french toast, but much more pillowy. The cream cheese was the perfect accompaniment to complete the flavor and provided that much-needed mildness to balance the sweetness of the bread pudding and maple syrup. The coffee was strong, bold, and the perfect punch on a rainy day, alongside my highly-recommended brunch experience. What really elevated my admiration for this place was my recent late-night experience here with some friends. I was in dire need of alcohol-absorption (read: food) and thankfully, Muddy Waters' kitchen is opened until 2 AM. Decided to get some regular fries, yucca fries, and sausage bread, only because we were curious to see WTF sausage bread was. Oh, and Surly Coffee Bender for me. The beer was fantastic, served in a huge coffee mug (it's cold), and did taste like coffee + surley bender (NO, really?!?!). The sausage bread was basically just sausage, peppers and cheese baked inside soft/crusty bread. The absolute favorite, without a doubt, were the yuccas fries. They were fried well (read: not greasy), tasted unlike anything I've ever had, and paired perfectly with their fresh chimichurri sauce. Wonderful.

I could easily see this becoming my neighborhood bar (if I didn't live a thousand miles away). Awesome beer list (I stumbled upon a Surly tap take-over w/ 17 Surly beers to try). Interesting menu (had the pot roast sliders and the ginger cake). Both were excellent. Friendly bartenders Great music Plenty of hipster wanna-bees made for good people watching Muddy Waters is definitely on the rotation of places I visit while in MN.

Yee ha! Apps and patio without the stress and keeping the calorie count and the price point down. The solution is the black bean hummus plate. All the apps I've had have been great, though not so low cal - the whole thing just works. It's an easy and civilized go-to. I have no complaints. This could grow into a five star update with a little more familiarity.

This review is based off of Brunch only. Really dig the location and the layout. Love how the front is pretty much open. Apparently a lot of other people do as well. This place was pretty packed when we went there on a Sunday around noon. Both indoor and outdoor seating - very good use of space to get max use of space on the patio. On to the food. Mr. Hemingway ordered the bloody. Must say, it was a damn good bloody & that says a lot in a town where bloody's are the pinnacle of any respectable brunch. There was no need for the array of garnishment you see at other joints where after tasting their bloody you realize they needed the flare to hide the truth. This bloody was delicious. Onto the food. Well, this were things take a turn. I ordered the Chilaquilas. Now to be fair, it was exactly what was stated on the menu [Guajillo Simmered tortilla, Fried egg, queso fresco, crem]. This dish came out and looked absolutely delicious. The plate of tortillas were covered in a crimson red sauce, topped with two fried eggs, drizzled with crem, & a sprinkling of queso fresco. Enough to make one salivate. That's were the appeal ended. My first bite, second bite, third bite, etc... sooooo bland. The red gaujillo sauce coating the tortillas was so bland. It could have used at least some salt. The crema was all in all a miscalculation, sticking with a slightly more pungent sour cream would have been less pretentious & a better fit in general. The crema added absolutely nothing, but a nice white color atop the mound of tasteless red tortilla chips. The queso fresco was nice and salty, but there wasn't enough to save this dish. I noticed many half full plates of Chilaquilas as I looked around the rest of the restaurant. Now, on the other hand Mr. Hemingway ordered the Smoked Trout Hash. The eggs were perfectly poached and the Hollandaise [Pimenton Sauce] was one of the best I've had. The fresh dill was definitely the star of this dish! With that being said, there was hardly any smoked trout in this dish. It was mostly potatoes, celery, and onions. If they can rectify the trout:potato ratio, I'd come back for this dish. I do have plans to come back here for dinner this week. I'm hoping I can update this review with more positives. I want to like this place. UPDATE: 10/31/11: So, we've made 2 trips back here (brunch only) since my last review. I'm going to hold strong at 3 stars. I just expected more from the food here. Now, I will definitely update this once we try lunch/dinner (as I'm excited to try the soft shell crab bahn mi!). Anyway, visit #2: I had the Benedict of the day - it was pretty good, it was a greek take on the traditional bene. The meat was lamb, topped with caramelized onions, feta, and poached egg, all atop a puff pastry. Was pretty tasty, but would have been nice if there was an accompaniment to this dish as it was pretty rich. A nice side of fruit or something would have finished this dish off nicely. Visit #3: I had the breakfast burrito. I will say, I have had a breakfast burrito from almost every breakfast joint in a five mile radius (that's a lot), and this one was just plain boring AND at the bottom of the list as far as breakfast burritos go. Dry and boring. This creates quite a conundrum as their bloodies are delicious, but the food... just doesn't cut it.

I've made three trips here so far, and I plan on making many more. Absolutely awesome food and service every time. I didn't have any issues with pretentious servers that others seem to have had. Each time, my servers were friendly, funny, and quick to make recommendations. My most recent visit made me come to love Jameson, and I am not very fond of whiskey in general. The black bean hummus is perfect, and I've been craving it ever since. The rock shrimp po' boy was delish. The fennel and kraut dogs were surprisingly tasty. The yucca fries are gigantic, almost too big, but still yummy. The chocolate torte was pure bliss with a dallop of creme fraise...so rich it should be served with a syringe of insulin. I love that the music is kept at a lower volume so that you don't find yourself screaming to have a conversation. My only wish is that they had more seating, but that's a minor issue. With food this good, I don't mind having to wait.

My husband, his brother, parents and I walked into Muddy Waters on a Thursday night at 8:31pm. The doorman turns us away- the 28, 29, 31 and two 60-somethings- because they check IDs at the door after 8:30pm and I didn't have mine with me. Way to turn away five grown adults who wanted to dine in, you jerks.

This place had a separate vegetarian/vegan menu. I love it when restaurants do that! We have the amazing Polenta Fries and the Chop salad. Both were equally yummy and very fresh tasting. The only downside of this place was how packed it was... We ended up crammed into a 2 person table right next to the entrance. That was the only downside.

This is my new favorite place in Minneapolis (and probably a few other cities too). Muddy Waters has an amazing selection of beers on tap -- Cane & Ebel, Magic Hat, Bell's Two Hearted, Ommegang, and the list goes on. I've only had the mussels and the butternut squash gnocchi, both of which were insanely good. The gnocchi was perfectly cooked with great texture and served with Brussels sprouts -- couldn't stop eating these! -- in a butter sauce. I want to try everything on their menu though, especially the desserts which kept taunting me every time I looked at the refrigerator case. Muddy Waters has a small but really gorgeous interior: candlelit and humming with people at the bar around 8pm. As an added bonus, the host has a pretty sweet handlebar mustache too. I'll be back soon.

The portly bartender with the hipster beard is an a**hole. Food is average and patio is nice but if they employ power hungry pr*cks who are supposed to be cool neighborhood bartenders then I'm out. My husband and I have lived in Uptown for 20 years and frequent many local bars and restaurants. We have never been publicly embarrassed before our experience at Muddy Waters. We were refused service for no good reason- well except that my husband used the "private" womens restroom and made a couple jokes about being carded at 45 years old. We were told we were too intoxicated after that. Totally not true, we're social drinkers and I watched a bunch of drunk girls that night falling all over the place and getting served! Maybe hipster bartender was having a bad night, he looked pissed off the whole time. But in this small town there's no room for rudeness. I'll be sure to tell everyone I know about my experience! Friendly and cool bartenders: Nick and Eddies, Lucias, Rye, Rinatta, Cafe Maude, The Local, Barbette, Bryant Lake, La Belle Vie.... all way too business smart for arrogant hipster attitude. Good luck Muddy Waters with that guy (Thursday 1/20 late night shift). You know who you are.

Muddy Waters, you were kind of a let down. We stopped in for drinks last Saturday around 10pm and luckily found a table without having to wait. The place was crowded though, and the tables are about a foot from each other. Be prepared to shout your own conversation while playing an unwilling eavesdropper to all other conversations going on around you. The drinks were fine, service was unremarkable. The bathrooms, or rather bathroom, was the big problem. Buzz was flying from this minute it was announced that Muddy Waters was expanding, so the owners had to at least expect a fair crowd. Why on earth is there only one bathroom each (there was a line for the sole men's room as well)? It's so huge you could easily fit two stalls in there. Instead, customers are forced to line up and wait while shuffling out of the way to let people walk past. I've heard great things about the food, and the menu had some interesting-sounding options. However, I don't know if I have the patience to return.

It's a really nice space with an extensive offering of small brew tap beers. Limited but tasty menu (see below) with a definite hang out and relax atmosphere. The food was definitely a 4. We ate off the lunch menu: black bean hummus platter (4), quiche (4), grilled pear and Brie sandwich (4), shrimp po boy (4), potato leek soup, side order of fries (4), and fried yucca (5 - we liked it more than Brasa's). Toss in some coffee and iced tea and the bill (with tip) was $51. Service suffered a lot. Our waitress was competent and always hustling but they definitely didn't have enough wait staff for labor day.

Came here for brunch this Labor Day. I sat at the bar and spoke with Tee (sp?), who is this fun rockabilly bartender. She suggested the salmon/eggs and the waffle with nutella. The salmon came with bread with butter and capers (delicious!) and some nice thick salmon. The eggs were softly scrambled and yummy. Our waffle didn't taste like nutella, but it was good. It had chocolate drizzles, bananas, and some type of nut (macadamia?). Very good!

I was very impressed by this beer and food joint! The Mexicali Dogs kicked serious butt along with the yucca fries and pot roast sliders! All 3 rocked it! The beers were top notch too as we quaffed a few Surly brews! Great service, great food and great beer to be had here. Highly recommended!

I can't believe it took me so long to make it to Muddy Waters when I have lived 9 blocks away for 9 years! Great tap selection with about 30 (good!) beers on tap. Patio seating. Free wifi too. Can't speak to the food quality as I did not have any when I went out here right after dinner but a friend of mine had the chicken fried bacon (seriously?!?) which looked delicious had I been hungry.

I like drinking here, they have the Steel Toe Size 7 IPA on tap. They have a great looking bar and the space is really open, good music is usually playing. I always look at the menu but nothing ever seems to be what I am craving. I did try the mussels and really wanted to like them, but the I believe it was the saffron flavor that distracted me, I wanted more salt or....something else.

This place is a welcome addition to the hybrid format: coffeeshop, restaurant, bar. It reminds me of Common Roots in that respect. I really enjoyed the black bean hummus plate with some beer. The interior feels really different than anything else in Minneapolis, in a good way. One time we ordered this weird mock-duck BBQ dish, was better as leftovers for some reason. Tried a few other things on the menu and was definitely pleased. The old Muddy (on 24th) was fine, but the new Muddy is super good!

I will totally be going back to this place, as long as their AC is working - OK, even if it isn't I'll be back. Really, that's the only thing that detracted from the new Muddy Waters experience. It was unseasonably and unreasonably hot the Sunday I went here and although it was cooler inside than out, the large industrial fans detracted a bit from the overall coolness of this place, but certainly not enough to keep me away. I sat at the dark wood bar on the right, with its myriad beer taps to be my many new friends. (They also have another beautiful wood bar on the left side of the restaurant as you enter and it has all of their coffees and the like up there, but as I like beer more than coffee, I was never going to sit there). After a little hemming and hawing over the brew I was going to try, the delightfully nice bartender gave me a sample of the Buffalo Sweat and I was in love. This is the only place I have encountered that carries such a great-named and great tasting beer - and at a price that is in line with pretty much every other Uptown establishment. It was dark, heavy and tasted perfectly creamy for the brunch I was about to have. Speaking of which, their brunch menu is a bit short (i.e. not the full menu), but everything on there looked to be really great. I shared the breakfast pizza with a friend and it was huge and well worth the price (only $12)! Topped with eggs, cheese, veggie burger and green peppers, it was like a Southwestern breakfast delight that made me smile with every bite I took. We ended up stuffed from having eaten the entire thing ourselves, but were able to sweat it all off thanks to the hot day. Long story short, I will be back to savor other beers and other meals from this place really soon. Also, I never visited the original location, but am glad to see the expansion from just a coffee shop into more of a bar and restaurant. Cheers!

Service=bad Food=mediocre Metal in pizza=unbelievable! - READ THIS: When the pizzas arrived we found pieces of metal or something in the pizza. We politely told the wait staff. We were told something had broken in the kitchen and contaminated our food. Good thing we didn't eat it!!! -------------------------------------------------- I decided to visit Muddy Waters Bar & Eatery with family in from out of town. I wanted to show them around Uptown and give them a taste of Minneapolis. I chose Muddy Waters after viewing their new opening on yelp, unfortunately we had a very very bad experience. - The poor waitress was stretched among 7-9 tables on the patio. - Water was brought to our table of four without ice. When I asked if I could have some ice she said, "they were running low on ice and it was only for the bar...I'll see if I can track some down for you". - Three out of the four at our table ordered a coke, all of us recieved a flat Coca-Cola. I asked if I could have another, the waitress said they would all taste like that because they came from the same soda gun. - One order of buffalo wing appetizers took nearly 25 minutes to arrive - Entrees arrived 40 minutes after ordering - Burgers come with french fries - we were not told this. - Pizza is larger enough for two, waitress did not tell us this. The two girls in our party ordered pizzas. Hum... - The pizza was a margherita - uh, I didn't see any fresh mozzarella or tomatoes on this pizza. - READ THIS: When the pizzas arrived we found pieces of metal or something in the pizza. We politely told the wait staff. We were told something had broken in the kitchen and contaminated our food. Good thing we didn't eat it!!! They did comp our food and we left a nice tip for the waitress, however, we will not go back there. Very bad. Do not recommend it. Service=bad Food=mediocre Metal in pizza=unbelievable!

What can I say, Muddy's rocks! The new space is quite the jump up from the old space. It is apparent that lots of thought was put into the layout and design to include everything. Outdoor patio, roll up garage door/window, booths, tables, couch, bar at both the coffee side and the full service booze side, and kitchen...a real kitchen! So far the menu is a small, but the food is good. I tried the Pear and Brie sandwich and Frank who is a carnivore when we eat out had the Muddy's burger which comes with a couple slices of chicken fried bacon on top and was cooked nicely to his pink preference. We shared a basket of house fries which were awesome. So the food was great. Now the beverage I had was iced Thai coffee...delicious and Frank had a Carmel Mocha or some such sweet drink...also delicious. Go to Muddy's. Free Wi-Fi, atmosphere, casual to nicer attire both welcome, great music food and beverage.

I like the location and feel of this place, but I was pretty annoyed with the service. I'm usually very sympathetic to servers and not a demanding customer at all, but our waiter was kinda rude. They were out of the wine I ordered, which is totally fine, but my waiter just decided on another kind to bring me (which was more expensive) without even asking me. Then he charged me full price for the wine that he himself decided to order for me. Also, we were sitting out on the patio which was nice, but very narrow, and I was seated with my back to the center. I understand there wasn't much room, but the waiter could have kindly asked me to adjust my seat. Instead he kept pushing hard up against the back of my head (with his crotch) to squeeze through two chairs. Finally, he brought me my check after one drink when I had planned to order more, but at this point I was happy to leave. I feel like all of these things combined made me not want to come back, especially if that guy is working there.

I went because of the beer selection, specifically beer from Steel Toe Brewery. I ordered a burger, so delicious, if I wasn't full of beer and burger I would have ordered another. The bartenders were great and offered a taste if you weren't sure if that beer would be to your liking.

This place is hard to leave. You show up in the morning for a cup of joe and you get more than you bargained for. It's impossible to resist so you get one of the steamed egg sandwiches and probably a baked treat as well (now that they have a full time pasty chef, there are hot fresh choices every morning). By the time you finish it's almost time for lunch, so you move from the coffee bar to the bar bar and have a Surly. You check out the menu and you promise yourself to just have an entree, but it's hard to pick just one. The good news is that you can't go wrong- the mortadella and egg sandwich is one of the best things I have ever put in my mouth, the rock shrimp sammy is fantastic and they make a solid burger. As you order you cave and get an order of yucca fries- which you devour because they are yummy on their own but you can't stop eating the aioli. The place is relaxed so you end up hanging out after lunch to digest; maybe you chat with one of the many artist/musicians that work and frequent the place, maybe you plug in your laptop to one of the various outlets (they even have them on the front of the bar) and do a little work, or maybe you take in the tunes because you enjoy the eclectic mix of Elvis Costello followed by American Head Charge. Before you know it it's happy hour and you are eating one of the unique and tasty pizzas that are made freshly at Muddy's. You still haven't even tried half of the 11 Surly beers they have, but you switch to the very tasty spicy bloody mary or one of many bottles of wines that come in under $12 a bottle. The place is busy but not overloaded, with a laid back crowd that doesn't harsh your mellow. OK, it's dinner. You feel guilty so you browse the vegan menu. The gnocchi looks so good you can't say no, and you have one of the best pasta dishes you have ever eaten. One piece of banana cream pie and that is it you promise yourself. After a few more drinks, it's late night and the place is hopping. You struggle to decide if you should have another Deschutes since it was so delicious or try that Founders that the group next to you is raving about. Before you know it you have had both and are stuck on the Stone Arrogant. It goes down smoother with the sausage bread, so you order a Leini's Joney Weiss at last call to close out the day. Sounds like a dumb fantasy but I lived it recently. Muddy's has soul, great food and easy style that makes it freakishly addictive. Have fun but beware.

Truly fantastic food with an equally impressive beer selection, the free tasting was a certainly a treat too.We were in with a very large group for a business dinner and the service was spectacular. If I lived in the twin cities I can see myself being a regular here.

I was a little hesitant to give a full fiver given how much Muddy's changed from its old style, but man did they do a good job. They kept the appeal to the former college kids and 20-somethings that went to their old location to study by transforming itself into a full-on gastropub. It has one of the best tap lists in the city and fantastic food to accompany it. Prices are reasonable, the atmosphere is cozy and familial and the staff is friendly. Definitely recommend.
