My problem is not with the food quality, service, or prices. It is with the cleanliness. My boyfriend and I were there last night, and I had to use the ladies room, and I was so disgusted that I did not even use it. 3 out of the 4 toilets had chunks of dried vomit on them, and all 4 stalls had walls that were grimy with who knows what type of bodily fluids. The paper towel dispenser was empty and the floors were sticky. I understand that this is a college bar in a college part of town, but that is not an excuse to not maintain the bathrooms. I do not understand how the management and employees cannot at least occasionally clean the bathrooms from the drunken nights of college kids who can't hold their liquor all that well. There are plenty of other places to eat/drink in Dinkytown and the surrounding areas, and I won't be returning to the Library.

It's really cheap, but that's about it. All bottom shelf, drinks aren't any good, and the crowd isn't very fun. Downstairs is a disgusting dance floor. The main floor is always packed, and hard to move through because of narrow walk-through areas. The upstairs has a tiny bar that takes a very long time to be served at. I went here the other night and there was an eighth grade football team celebration upstairs. What kind of college bar would be okay with something like this?

Alright, this 4 stars is for what this place is, it is a college bar. It is way too loud, the floor was sticky with beer, but they had $3 Fultons! Dear LORD! Also, they advertise on Wednesdays that they have free bacon. My friend could not believe that! He was like, "Is this frickin' legal!? Free bacon......So awesome. We also saw the guys next to us get 3 different burgers or sandwiches, and they all looked awesome! We were waiting to see a live Adam Carolla podcast show at the Varsity theater across the street and my buddy didn't have any dinner, so we got a chicken finger plate for like $5. I am telling you, this place is awesome if you are a college kid. (My liver and brain were scared, because if I weren't driving, it would have been bad.) They have shots of three types of Southern Comfort for like $3 and just a ton of drink specials. Thank you self-control. Our bartender was great and they had loads of TVs. A great college bar. Man I am glad I got married at 23 though and didn't have to go through that crap for too many years. :-)

If I were 20 something I would love this bar. However, going there after a show at the Varsity to wait on catching a cab was scary. Complete meat market complete with scandily clad want-to-be 21ers and matching boys who mostly likely needed a stomach pump and IV fluids.

Typical college bar in the Midwest. I'd say the only times I've really enjoyed being here are the times I can't remember being here. (aka when I dropped green feathers as a trail on st pattys day) The place is loud, crowded, and the dance floor is in the basement where there is no cell service. If you're trying to meet up with a group, I suggest coordinating ahead as to which floor you'll meet up on. The drink specials may the the best part about this place - I think I paid for $1.50 drafts, which is excellent. If you're feeling like having a reminiscent night of college go for it, otherwise, stay classy and hit up another joint.

It was the U's Spring Break, so the place was on the empty side. There were still drunk dude-bros Facetiming their mom upstairs (seriously) and the bartender gave me a food menu but then failed to mention that the kitchen was closing shortly so that when I placed an order, they wouldn't fill it. But we got to watch some hockey and March Madness, it was walkable from where we were (the Ridder) and on the inexpensive side. Served it's purpose, but I'm certain there are better places to drink in the area.

Pretty good drink deals I must admit. My main problem comes with how they charge customers. I was there and had an 8 dollar bill. It was a couple of beers and nothing more. I left them a 15% tip which I thought was pretty generous considering all they did was pour a couple of drinks. I look at my bank statement a couple of days later and they have increased the tip to 20%. So awesome if they don't like your tip they will just steal from you. Great business practice. Tl;Dr: If they don't like how much you tip they will charge however much they want to your credit card aka steal from you.

I really don't understand the really poor reviews for the library. I've mostly seen reviews of people realizing this is a cheap, crowded, college bar. What were you honestly expecting? You are literally right next to one of the largest colleges in the nation. Rant over. I enjoy this place for the deals. The specials are unmatched here in dinkytown. My personal favorite is the $2.50 burger and fries on Tuesday. Is it an amazing burger? Not even close, but it's well worth it for that price. It washes down nicely with a $2 Surly Furious. Party scene is weak here though. Most people start at library and move onto other bars in dinkytown.

Everything a MN college bar should be. Misleading name to make sophomoric jokes over the next few hours? Check. Drink specials that just pretty much say "get hammered"? Check. Beer and misunderstood sexual tension spilt everywhere? Check. Deer hunting game and awkwardly created dancing area downstairs? Check and check. The place was very busy, they made solid shots and cocktails even though I didn't expect much, great energy from the place. I've never actually tried their food but it looks alright. I rated it not from my perspective per day but for what it was intended for, a college bar and it does everything that one should. Even has Mesa pizza next door for after care :)

When I was a freshman at the University of Minnesota, I had friends who would get dressed up and tell me that they were headed to "The Library" at 10 PM on a Saturday night. This freaked me out and I panicked because I thought I wasn't studying hard enough and I envisioned myself becoming a college drop out. Not to mention, I typically dressed like a bum for late night library cram sessions. Little did I know that "The Library" is actually a bar and I figured out that I was doing all right in life besides, lacking some common sense... The Library Bar & Grill is a University of Minnesota staple. Thea typical crowd are students and Gopher sports fans. If you're not on campus for a game, a student, or there to pick up college chick; this bar may not be for you. What I love: -Cheap: Inexpensive drinks & food. If you're willing to walk - free parking. Plus they have legit happy hour/ lunch specials. -Dancing: I love to dance and although there's typically not a ton of dancing going on during the weekdays/end, the basement is dedicated to those looking to dance like there's no tomorrow. -Entertainment: Pool tables & an arcade style deer hunting video game available. -Spacious: Three levels to spread out. On weekends the place feels cramped because there's a ton of people there after about 10 PM or so. The Meh: -Staff/ Service: If you're here on a weekend night, the bar staff is fabulous! They're quick and straight to the point. For weekday food service, I've experienced inconsistent service and the staff tends to be a little slower and not as attentive or friendly. Not terrible service but the kind where you have to track down your server for the bill & refills etc. -Food: The menu is full of pretty standard bar grub and nothing that will knock your socks off. The food typically seems to be made fast and not the greatest quality. Quality wise, think of Applebee's/ Culvers appetizers. -Parking: If you're not willing to walk far for free parking, you'll have to pay and it's typically not cheap. However, there's a parking ramp nearby as well as street parking if you can snag a spot. Summary: The Library Bar & Grill is a fun college bar that offers cheap food & drink specials. The food & weekday vibe isn't spectacular but the atmosphere is killer on weekend nights.

So, caveat; I am an old soul and a bibliophile, so the idea of a "lie" of a bar called the Library just bothers me on principle! That said, this place isn't great no matter the name. We stopped in for food before a concert at the Varsity and were underwhelmed to say the least. First, it was freezing in there, like keep your coat on and still be cold, cold! It is dingy and dark (and not in that fun mysterious bar way). The food was just, eh, and my beer tasted like a soapy glass. The bartender was really great though, so there was that...

  • Jenny T.

It was better when they offered $1 rails and beers after 9pm... Now you have to give up the $1.50 for either AND they've put a $10 minimum on credit cards, so bring cash. Honestly, this place is nothing special. The food is fine. The drinks are fine (they're just cheap as hell). The people are fine. Meh. Fine. There are plenty of better campus bars to go to. Oh yeah, and don't go down to the lower level: creeper-ville, USA.

I went to The Library with a few friends to grab a drink for a friend's birthday and being a student at the U and living close to campus, this was a good low key bar for a Friday evening. My friends all went through security fine but the security guy did not let me in so easily. I usually always get a longer examination of my driver's license because it is from California and granted, I did have my picture taken when I was 16 so it is expected that people are wary of having a possible fake ID. The security guys looked at it under the light and even took out the book of driver's license from all the states. When he was looking through the book he passed California and I told him he passed it and I helped him flip to the page for California licenses. He compared it to the book and started quizzing me. He asked me what part of California my hometown was in and what the capital of California was, which I answered correctly. He then asked me what the state bird of California was and its state flower. I told him I would have no clue, and he told me to not come back to The Library, as at that point he probably thought I had a fake ID. I told him that not many people in California know its state bird and state flower, which at that point he very condescendingly told me "How could you not know your state bird and flower?" I asked him if he knew his and he did. At that point, both security guys must have felt that I was carrying a fake ID and decided to confiscate my driver's license for the night and told me that if I wanted it back, I would have to come back the next morning to get it from the manager. It was at that point that I realized, this was ridiculous. If my driver's license is too foreign for them to recognize that it was a real driver's license, then so be it. I do understand the need to be strict on not letting in minors into bars, and I do appreciate their thoroughness in making sure that that policy is strictly followed, and sometimes a real ID can be mistaken for a fake one. However, I do not appreciate being treated with a lack of respect and being talked to condescendingly for not knowing a trivia question. I do not appreciate that they decided to confiscate my driver's license when I had driven there and would not be able to drive home. I told them I was not leaving that place until I got my driver's license back. Finally they told me that I can have my ID back only if I do not return to The Library for the rest of the night. I took my ID and left. One last thing is that one of our friends came late and originally we had said to meet up at The Library. But after the incident, we left and he showed up a few minutes later thinking we were at The Library and while getting past security, overheard them say how ridiculous it was that some girl didn't know her state bird or state flower. How rude! I am a very understanding person and can overlook many things. I know that The Library in Dinkytown is geared towards college students and these issues come up, however, I would like to be treated with respect. I am going to need a lot of convincing to ever come back to this bar.

Yeah the specials are amazing. I went with a friend of mine and we got $2.50 burgers. It's got a great atmosphere and also great staff. It is definitely a cool place to hang out with friends. It can get pretty crowded at night but overall it's a cool place to visit.

Library has to be my least favorite bar on campus. The clientele is a mix of frat stars and sorority girls, which is to be expected, mixed with the unwelcome guidos and slutty 27 year olds of Roseville. Yeah, the drinks are cheap (Thursday nights they're a dollar before midnight!) but I'd rather just drink my own booze and leave after midnight. Never had the food and not really expecting myself to. I will say that Library can be fun in the daytime, especially for games. The open upstairs is a cool layout, and sitting at the bar I've always received quick service. Go to Library for day drinking, avoid when the sun goes down. Beware of the basement. I've never been down there out of fear... The TV's on the top floor play a live video of people dancing in the basement. Uh, creepy?

    (2)
  • David C.

Cheap drinks, a tad dirty, very college atmosphere. Definitely come here if you are strapped for cash. Besides that, there really is not compelling reason to frequent this place. PROTIP: They have pool tables upstairs.

    (2)
  • Michelle W.

Good: Cheap drinks Ick: Packed Rude guys that just slam into you walking past Everyone is completely trashed Loud Funny/creepy: They screen what's happening on the dance floor at the bar, so people can either laugh at or stalk you

As the rating says, "Meh. I've experienced better." The Library Bar & Grill (Wait, there's a grill?! Who knew!) is one of those places I keep getting roped into going back to. Come on friends, out of all the choices in Minneapolis...really? Really?! I suppose I could refuse, but to be candid...with two-for-one drink specials, and oodles of d.bags just waiting at the bar with cash in their hand, it's hard to say no... I digress. The Library is fun. But if you're looking for classy, this is NOT the place for you. I think at age 25, I may be outgrowing it...

Welcome to Dinkytown. College crowd dive bar, and it does get pretty crowded. They've got three floors and from the looks of it, most of the dancing is in the basement? I could be wrong about that. Beers start at a few bucks each. There are different specials each day throughout the week, so I'd keep that in mind. Anyways, I had a good time overall here, so I wouldn't mind revisiting this venue.

  • Whitney G.

I love being in Dinkytown, especially since everything's a little cheaper so as to accomodate the college crowd. But those hipsters that frequent here may have forgotten a key ingredient to keep away the perspiration- deodorant. It smelled like a gym sock the minute I made my entrance. Buy one get one free drinks may anesthetize you temporarily, but consider yourself warned.

  • Chris C.

Not a lot special here but I gave them 3 stars because the bartender Jeremy was a class act. Funny, witty, engaged. He was a treat to sit with. He made us forget that they had only boring beers and a mediocre food menu. BTW, I think you get a discount on drinks if you wear a backwards baseball cap. Not really....... I saw another review in which the person raved about the mojito. I asked Jeremy for a mojito and he looked at me like I had 3 heads!!!

This is the typical college bar. Its cheap and has a ton of large TVs. You can easily get drunk here for $10, but do you really want to? It gets packed and is probably the longest wait to get a drink in the city. They sometimes have 3 people at the bar, but only 1 person slowly pouring drinks. The place looks 100x's nicer than five years ago though. Back in the day it used to be concrete floors and cinder block walls, it looked like a prison. It also used to be the place to go if you were 16 and wanted to drink and only had a clipped drivers license from your older brother that expired 5 years ago. I think they do a better job about keeping under aged kids out now, but on any given night a quarter of the people in there are 19 with fake IDs. So why do I come here, they make the strongest $2 drink around town.

As far as Happy-Hour spots in Dinkytown this is hands down the best. The food is very good, the drinks are fantastic during Happy Hour but avoid this place after about 7pm! Pros: Happy Hour menu and drink prices The Tacos on Monday nights are incredible, and the burgers on Thursdays are spectacular. Cons: After 7pm stay away. Super fraty and crowded. If you're looking for guys wearing pastel shorts and tank tops this is the place to go.

How the evening began: $1 rails, $3 long islands, free shots of Jose Cuervo, and an empty stomach. How it ended: I made a new best friend named Steve, got hit on by a blind guy, and ended up at home with a sombrero. I won't be returning.

I am slightly blushing at how many times I have spent my night at the Library. I'll just say that there are about three bouncers who know me on first name basis. I kind of have a love-hate relationship with this place. I love how cheap the drinks are, $1 on Thursdays, and I think $1.50 before midnight on the weekends? So super cheap. Plus $1 PBR tall boys on Wednesdays, with free (overcooked) bacon baskets. I also love how, if you go to the U, each bar night is a kind of mini reunion of all sorts of people you thought you would never see again, i.e the boy you had a spanish project with freshman year or the girl who sat in your lab all of first semester who asked you for a pen once. Suddenly, all these missed connections become best friends for 20 minutes, only to slide back into obscurity the next morning. I don't love, however, how kind of cheap this whole place makes you feel. The whole place casts a vibe that sort of suggests you are really only going to enjoy this place for the next 9 months, and after that, you'll roll your eyes and judge people who love it. However, the drinks can't be beat, price-wise, and it is kind of a new school institution for any college students in the area. If you want to make a bunch of friends in one night this is your place, Hell, I have even met a boyfriend here.Just don't take it too seriously, get some cheap drinks, and go to Mesa afterwards. It's a college bar. Don't expect it to be anything else.

Friday, 3/18/2011 Met up with a group here on Friday night of St. Patty's Day weekend for drinks and finger food. Pretty large bar with plenty of flat screen TVs. I was surprised how damn cheap everything was when I closed my tab out, given it was Minneapolis: $1.50 Vodka/tonics $2.50 Blue Moons (pint) $6 Irish Car Bombs I was told later that this was due to it being a "college bar" as it is located near the University of Minnesota (in "Dinkytown"). I didn't notice the crowd being "younger," but I'm only 25, so I guess I'm not that old, despite what my 23 year old girlfriend says (she calls me "old man"). I got there around 7:30pm and we were able to nab tables for the six of us upstairs with ease. Laid back environment, seemed to be a happening place with an atmosphere similar to Buffalo Wild Wings, but with less people haha. Food was "bar food" so nothing spectacular, but come here for the drinks not the food. I enjoyed The Library and would return.

My experiences with the Library have been so varied that it's difficult to pin to a star rating. I'm not saying that the place is inconsistent, rather the place changes depending on when and where. I've watched sports here, which seems to be a main focus as there are huge TVs and a lot of them. It's fun when it's a big game, but forget sitting if the game is started. I've had drinks on a Friday night here. Cheap, which is nice. Weekends tend to attract more than the average amount of popped collars and platinum blond hair. The place can turn into a frat party pretty quick, so if that isn't your forte, I'd avoid Friday and Saturday nights. If you find yourself wanting more room/less noise, the basement level is usually open on busy nights. Other nights, like a Sunday, the place can be empty if there is not a game. The place becomes a more amiable place to talk and meet at these times. I've met professors here for lunch and I've celebrated 21st Birthday's here. It's kinda a chameleon of the bars in the area. The food is good, more so than you would expect. Decent portions, and standard bar food done well. The Servers seem to see it all and act according to the setting of the moment. So, when you go tends to impact the type of place The Library is.

  • Ralph M.

Oh, I must be in a forgiving mood today. The wait staff at the Library is awfully . . .variable. See my prior review for details. However, the bar staff is pretty damn good. Pop in on a slow afternoon (long before the frat boys show up), pony up to the bar, enjoy the $2 you-call-it and chat with a friendly barkeep. The appetizers are half priced, too. They're pretty average bar fare, which is what your booze filled stomach probably needs. That works out pretty well.

    (3)
  • Kat W.

The $1.50 rails+beers from 9 pm - Midnight on a Saturday are The Library's saving grace. Personally, when I come here, I try to order exclusively from the bar, because otherwise it takes eons to get your drink order. If you insist on ordering from a waitress, order two drinks at once in order to eliminate all of the waiting that inevitably comes along with that. Lately, it seems that they have a $10 minimum on cards, so either plan to spend that much, team up with a friend, or bring cash accordingly. Oh, and by the way, its a campus bar. So, don't come after 8 pm expecting a civilized atmosphere and class. Expect the obvious: college kids living the dream.

drink specials are decent, but that's about it. the one bartender i've experienced is this brunette chick who's been in there working every time i've been in there. She doesn't come off as one who enjoys her job. never seems to smile and seems to walk away from you kind of sneering. Seriously, atleast fake it until u make it. make the experience pleasant for ur customers. Smile, make conversation or SOMETHING. Or maybe u need a new job. get's pretty loud in there on friday and saturday nights when all the college students are in there.

Rule 1: You only go to the library when it is 1am, you and all of your friends are trashed, and you decide that $2.50 long islands sound like a GREAT idea. Rule 2: You always regret going to the library because it is jam packed, the music is deafening, and the $2.50 long islands make you execute decision making that once again seems brilliant at the time and idiotic the next day. Rule 3: Sometimes the Library makes for great stories. Other times the Library makes for horrific endings. Bonus points: On the plus side, you can always tell your parents that you spent Friday night "in the library."

    (2)

shitty bar. don't come here unless you want to be treated like crap by their loser management & the douchy crowd they draw in.

  • Mike B.

The Library somehow manages to be neither a pleasant place to enjoy drinks nor a particularly compelling destination for those wanting to observe an absurd, drunken mass of humanity. There are better places for both. But if you dig Cascada's singles from several years ago and feel cheated when a bar doesn't play Livin' On a Prayer multiple times throughout the evening, The Library is your best bet. I've only been to The Library on Friday and Saturday nights, and each time I have found the place infested with young guys apparently going through the painful early stages of learning how to talk to women in bars. One one occasion, I was there with a mixed-company group, and a guy approached my female friends and busted out a pick-up line he had cribbed from VH1's show The Pickup Artist. They blew him out, and he went right to the next table of girls and used the same line on them. The balcony area on the upper level is the best place to sit and makes for good people-watching on the middle level. The booths on the lower level provide some relief from the crowds. The two best features of The Library are the cheap drinks and the restrooms. There are restrooms on each floor, and each is spacious and fairly clean.

Sigh. I've stared at the screen now for a good ten minutes because any review I write of the Library will be scathing. But, I had a good day so I'll try not to be too mean. The first time I went to the Library was Superbowl Sunday, only a few months after it opened. I was very impressed with the place. It was clean, new, and there was a plasma TV wherever you looked. The service was OK and the beer was so good I nearly fell asleep at my table!... or maybe that's because the game lasted 5 hours. Whatever. It was also not full of screaming sorority girls and shouting frat boys.....yet. Fast forward only a few short months. It suddenly became infested with the U of M, specifically their Greek community. I don't have a problem with fraternities and sororities but I do get annoyed when girls are stumbling in my face, nearly retching on my shoes, and guys are constantly shouting and giving each other the "Hey bro" high fives/half hugs. I tried to give it another chance by going there for dinner, and ended up waiting an hour for our food because the waitress "lost" our check (there were about 3 other people in the bar at the time). I digress. I won't say anything more. If you're really curious about the Library and want to check it out, do it. But I'd recommend not doing it.

Thursday Happy hour is the cheapest! $1.00 Domestic pints and $1.00 Rail drinks. It's also busy on Thursdays! It the best time to go. The dance floor is decent in the lower level but because of the cheap prices there are alot of crazy drunk guys roaming around sometimes. I have seen some nasty fights. If you want cheap Library Bar and Grill is the place you want to be.

This spot is quickly becoming a second office for my startup that is in the UTEC building. Tons of seating, great specials all week long, WiFi, great staff, and really good food. I really like it for sporting events (the place was NUTS during the world cup), and during the afternoon it is the perfect spot to get out of the office to. HIGHLY recommend it.

    (5)
  • Kevin H.

Fuck the Library unless you go for happy hour, half price apps that aren't bad and the drinks are cheap. I only stop by if I'm seeing a show at the Varsity to liquor up before the collars come popped around 9. If dorm life irritated you, beware.

  • Anna S.

This is a great place to come if you're in the college crowd and want cheap drinks! Friday & Saturday nights are $1 beer/rail drinks and $2.50 long islands until midnight. Usually pretty crowded but theres 3 levels so theres usually room somewhere for a group. Fun to sit at the main level bar if you like meeting new people. Downstairs has dancing and more comfortable seating.

    (4)
  • Kristen H.

It's ok. It's good for a cheap happy hour, nightly specials, 1/2 price apps sort of thing but if you are not looking for a packed crazy undergrad scene then you pretty much need to leave before 8pm. Maybe if it's a Tuesday you can stick around a little longer, but that depends on what's going on in sports and the University calendar. Service is variable...the most recent waitress was great and attentive, until it came time to bring back my credit card. I really do not understand suddenly providing bad service right when it's time for someone to tip you.... Not really worth a special trip, but if you're in the area it's the best happy hour deal in Dinkytown.

Good place to come to get hammered for $10. I had several pints of New Castle on tap $2 then switched to bottomless iced tea. The drinks get cheaper as the evening goes on. I ordered a Beef Chimi when I first arrived and it was surprisingly good. Around 10:00 or so a wave of U of M students came in (around 100?) and things got pretty crowded and loud so we moved on. Great prices, nice place, the Beef Chimi was pretty good.

  • Ninja S.

A sports bar down the road from frat row where all the fratboys come down to yell at each other and swap sorority sisters. You can eat her if you like this kind of atmosphere, but it's almost like an extension of the frathouse. Might as well just hang out in some loud family living room and drink cheap beer and throw things at each other. It's about the same experience.

    (2)
  • Kathy C.

This is probably the nicest bar on campus, where nice means people actually dress up to go here and it's usually packed. The staff knows this and they can usually be pretty huge dicks. However, the specials are unrivaled and are extremely generous, which is likely why so many people started coming here in the first place. They also have food, which is pretty good, and happy hour from 3-6 daily.

  • Maureen F.

I lied I did end up the Library on a crazy Friday night. I was dragged by my hair, kicking and screaming. Well not really, I was drunk enough not to care. It was Halloween so I said what the hell. I guess I payed little attention to the giant banner that toted the weekly specials proclaiming $1 beers on Friday nights because I was shocked when my first order of drinks was only $4.50. I said excuse me you must be mistaken, but the bartender didn't make a mistake the drinks were that cheap. So, they still don't move up a star, but it was nice to drink cheaply if I was going to be there anyways.

  • Peter H.

Oh what can I say about the Library that hasn't been said already. I think Seijen's rules of going to the Library is the best advice you can get. True it is always packed on the weekend full of frat bros and sorority ho's which can make for a good night or disaster. I have had my good times at the library and I've also had awful times. It is one of those places that you never really want to go but the cheep drinks or your group of friends who want to go there always end up bring you back. The place isn't bad and the service is pretty good but over all it is nothing special. Just your run of the mill campus party bar so enter at your own risk.

Terrible service almost every time I've been dragged to go with friends that are convinced its the place to go -- it's true, you're almost guaranteed to see someone you've had a class with if you're a U of M student... but the poor service and pricey drinks don't make up for it, unfortunately.

Pretty cool bar close to the U of M. Really good drink specials and a solid DJ. Despite having two levels, this place was PACKED on a Saturday night. Recommended.

Your average college bar. . noise, cheap, and crowded. If your in college this is one of the best bars on campus. Its full of flat screens and a good place for the after party. If you not in college I might suggest going elsewhere/
