This is my absolute favorite "Vietnamese" restaurant when in MPLS. While most things may be on the "Americanish" side and they offer a lot of Chinese type dishes, it is very tasty and satisfying. Everything is done just as it's been done for over 15 years. Reliable and consistent. There are even a few waiters who have been there since the beginning, which is cool. You get huge portions, the meat is NOT mysterious, the pork eggrolls and fish sauce are addictive. We usually get the spicy beef curry, which comes on a bed of lettuce. yum. My picky nephew likes the sweet and sour chicken, which is Americanish/Chinese, but quite tasty all white meat, and their shrimp fried rice is sweet and smoky. To sum the place up, I would have to say that it is not truly 100% authentic, but more of a fusion of Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai and a little Indian, depending on your dish. So, if you are wanting true hardcore Vietnamese, I would find another place. However, if you want flavor, huge portions, FAST service...go here.

I thought this place had great curried dishes and I'm a big fan of their iced tea there. Just a note though (if you're a big pop drinker), they only allow one refill.

Friendly, Fast service. Great selection of food. Huge portions. The only down side is the very poor beer selection. With the food they serve there should be a much more cosmopolitan beer selection.

Good food, blah atmoshpere but a fantastic egg roll. I don't usually like the fish sauce that comes with but this one is GREAT!!

If fond memories equaled great food, Kinh Do would get 7 stars. I recall many a happy afternoon of skipped classes and lunch specials. The food is allegedly Vietnamese but much more closely resembles Lee Ann Chin or other Americanized-Asian restaurants. Still it's tasty and if you ever get sick of math class or high school in general, this is the place to go and get your mind off theorems and the like.

Best Vietnamese in town. Dont miss the Garlic Potatos, Hot and Spicy Chicken or the Egg Rolls. Ambiance needs work so take it togo.

I've tried this spot a few times and if it wasn't located on Hennepin I doubt it would really be all that popular. The food is decent--I will go as far to say it's "good" but this is giving the context that it is located in Minnesota and in comparison to other "tri-cuisine" restaurants. I will give them this: the Chinese they offer like sweet & sour chicken/pork and Kung Pao are not breaded or fried. The pad thai is passable and the mock-duck noodle salad, other than being pretty garlicky, was worth finishing. So, it's not mmm mmm good but you don't leave feeling like you ingested a pound of MSG-laden deep fried batter. The service tends to be kind of iffy. I was there yesterday and the waitress just walked up and stood there--expecting us to know what to do and recite our order. Maybe this is somewhat of a cryptic review. Let's see if I can redeem myself: if you want an easy, straight forward Vietnamese/Thai/Chinese dinner and you can walk or drive there within 5 minutes, then it's an okay spot. Don't expect to write home about it (maybe it will warrant a bland review on Yelp). The atmosphere is pretty blah, so I think it would be a good place to pick up some take-out for Movie Night. Since I think most Americanized Chinese food is greasy ... this is probably a better choice if you want a more healthy Chinese dinner. For traditional and tasty Vietnamese there are some spots on Nicollet. If you want to take a drive to St. Paul, Mai Village on University is awesome.

Kinhdo has fantastic szechwan chicken. Reasonably priced, good food, and a large menu. Rumor has it that the tofu is fabulous.

this is vietnamese food? huh, could i swear it taste more like chinese more than anything... interesting. i guess if you're really looking for vietnamese food - DON'T go here. if you're looking for chinese food, i suppose you could go here.

Delicious and offers dishes I can't find as well executed in other Asian restaurants. Their lemon grass (hot and spicy) beef is really flavorful and one of our favorites. They have a spicy chicken wings on the appetizer menu that reminds me of spicy Korean chicken I can only seem to find in NYC. The pad thai there is very good. All in all, one of our favorite pan-Asian restaurants in the twin cities.

Had the pho here. Enjoyed it more than the pho at My Huong. Didn't have anything else here though, but it seems like this restaurant has more than Vietnamese food.

I've eaten in once (lunch special), and ordered out three times. You won't be dying to come back here, but you won't be sorry you went. Some things are really good, some things you wish you hadn't ordered, but on the whole, it's a solid restaurant with good prices. Service is excellent and take-out is ready in a flash. Cream cheese wontons are good, egg rolls are meh. Their mock duck is not the best mock duck I've ever had, but they do a pretty good job with the fried tofu, try something with that.

My husband and I was visiting Minnesota so I took him to try this place that I have been raving about their pad thai forever! It's been 10 years since I've been here and it's still hands down the best pad thai ever! The flavors still taste the same. Even my husband couldnt disagree! The same waiter was still working there. (I believe it's family owned.) She still remembers me and said "same old, same old" when I place my order. Love this place still and I miss it already.

The location is perfect but the food is not so great. It is a Vietnamese Restaurant but the food they have on lunch specials are more Chinese. Don't get me wrong though their lunch is cheap. For $6.99 you get a choice of hot and sour or egg drop soup, a dish and an appetizer. I ordered hot and sour soup and I didn't like the taste of it at all. It was thick almost like chicken pudding taste. Then I ordered Lemon Chicken and I didn't know it was breaded and fried. I should have asked. The only thing I enjoyed was the spring rolls. Next time I will try something else different. They do have a small section for parking and it is located on a busy street. The staff was a little slow even though the place was not packed. The place looked clean. I don't think I will see myself coming back soon.

I've been going to Kinhdo for more than 25 years. Still love this place. Egg Rolls, Special Fried Rice, and Beef and Potatoes are my happy trio. This is not gourmet - it's comfort food.

This is by far my favorite Asian restaurant in the twin cities!! I've had so many different things!! Egg rolls are the best by far!! The lunch combos are delicious for a great price! Try the cold strawberry green tea!!

I straight up found a cockroach in my food. I work in the service industry, so I am absolutely the last person to complain about a restaurant, so you know it was bad. We don't eat out much, or at many places, but Kinhdo has always been our go-to for cheap comfort Chinese takeout that's vegan. I can't even explain how grossed out I am. My stomach has been in knots for 2 days. I even had nightmares! When I called to let them know, they didn't even offer a refund, just credit for another meal, like I would EVER eat there again. Glad I paid for roach-infested food, and then ended up eating a PB & J.

We went out for lunch and ordered the Chicken Fried Rice, eggrolls and chicken wings. Our bill was $32 ($26+$6 tip). The service was fast, prompt and friendly. The food was good but nothing that I would make an extra trip for.

So I guess I fell for the hype? It was a chilly September afternoon during my "Are You Pho Real?" month (that time I had pho 7 times in one month) and I was craving it bad. Didn't want to deal with delivery fees so I decided to go somewhere close. Placed an order for the meatball pho over the phone. Got there 15 minutes later and my order was ready. Points! Service was great! Super friendly. Got back home and the pho was alright. Nothing pho-nomenal. For something with so many ingredients, not enough flavor. Maybe I'll have to try another dish but for the "best Vietnamese food in Minneapolis" as I've heard multiple people exclaim it underperformed. Till next time...

Mediocre food with awesome service. This may be the first time in some years that I've gone out to dinner at a restaurant and not ordered an alcoholic drink. I guess I only really saw a beer menu in a small stand sitting on the table and not an actual Drinks Menu. I got the chicken spring rolls which were fine but also came with shrimp inside. ??? I also ordered the chicken rice noodle salad. This consisted of some vegetables with a brown sauce on rice noodles and bean sprouts and peanuts. This all sounded delicious while reading on the menu but the dish itself was lacking in any flavor. I splashed a whole bunch of the liquid sauce that arrived to the table in a small dish. It was clear with some red flakes in it so I assumed it would have a kick. NOPE. I ended up using Siracha. Very large portions. The other half of my dish was consumed as my lunch at work the following day. I placed it all in a bowl and nuked it. Added a bunch of my homemade Jolokia spice... for flavor... and began eating it with chopsticks. I'm so confused here because I can eat cake with chopsticks but for some reason this rice noodle dish just wasn't able to get into my mouth with the chopsticks! What kind of Chinese-pretending-to-be-Chinese food isn't edible with chopsticks? I guess that's why I didn't see any at the restaurant? The three stars is for the service. Our lady server was frickin HILARIOUS. Very unassuming since the stereotype is usually the opposite. A woman in my party had spilled something on her shirt and the server came by to address it - that alone is terrific service - but then asked if she wanted a bib. Deadpan. Then smiled jokingly and walked away to get more napkins. SO GOOD! Later, the server slopped all of our leftovers into individual Chinese take-out boxes, put them into a paper bag and then neatly, as if it were a paper crane, folded the bag down for carrying. Oh yeah, PLUS FORTUNE COOKIES. hehe

I had mock duck with potatoes and onion, let me tell you, the best I have ever had! The potatoes were sliced paper thin and fried to a crunchy crisp, the mock duck was heavenly, very much like duck without the gamey taste or guilt. Perfect brown sauce that coated every bit of the potatoes, onion and mock duck. I had steamed brown rice upgrade for 2 dollars more and it was amazing, nutty and substantially more flavorful than white rice. My son had sweet and sour chicken and it looked divine, the sauce was a beautiful glossy, dark orange and there was fresh tomato and I think pineapple tucked in among the golden chicken chunks. I was so busy chowing down on my dish that I did not give much attention to his. The portions were HUGE, I had enough leftover to bring home for lunch the next day, although my son ate all of his, he has a hollow leg. Total for 2 dinners including pop, but not tip-$32.00. Kihn do reminds me of Saigon restaurant that used to be located on 38th street in south Mpls so many years ago. This is a great place.

Not good. I ordered the lunch chow mein, which was like no other chow mein I've ever had. There was a weird sauce and the noodle were crispy like they had been deep fried. I probably won't be going back anytime soon.

The first time was ok. Not overly memorable, because as I was sitting there ordering on the 2nd visit...I couldn't recall what I had. (Unusual for me.)

Yep.... I've had much better. My friends are going to kill me but I have to be true to my palate. Firstly, I wish to say that the staff here are very friendly and accommodating. The service was great but the food unfortunately "to my liking" was lackluster. I am not going to beat this place into the ground because I am not writing this review with any ill feelings. It was dinner time and two of my associates raved about the place so naturally I was salivating at the bit to try the food. They bragged about the Egg Rolls and also a Potato Chip and Beef dish, so that's what we ordered. Oh we also added a House Rice which comes with Shrimp, Chicken etc. Egg Rolls arrived and they were huge in size but not in flavour. I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I was. My associates looked at me as if I had committed a mortal sin, but the Egg Rolls were simply average in taste to me. The dipping sauce was not as viscous as I am use to but it was ok. Then came the Beef and Potato Chip dish. It was also just ok. A bit more flavour than the Egg Rolls, but truly nothing to scream about and definitely not something I am anxious to try again, either of these two dishes. The House Rice that we added was a bit dry and also a bit disappointing to the palate. So in conclusion,.. .Would I give this place another try? The food wasn't awful, but by no means enjoyable either. Especially considering I was in great company with my two business associates, whom I love. If they are prepared to pay for the next visit, that would be the only reason I would go, but I would much rather try somewhere else than re-visit this place again. Sorry

Kindho is a great place for a quick lunch in uptown minneapolis at a great affordable price. Lunch starts with an option of egg drop soup that is flavorful and filled with egg, scallions and chicken cuts. I always do the sweet and sour chicken which comes out piping hot in a nice portion size. The restaurant has ample seating and good customer service. Maybe one day I I'll go for dinner.

I like Kinhdo but don't love it quite as much as some of the other authentic places in the area. I don't know why. The food is solid, great variety, and the service is snappy and friendly. It has a great location, and free parking which is nice for uptown. Maybe because the menu tilts more Chinese and Thai than Vietnamese vs other Vietnamese restaurants, but I suppose that is just my opinion. But as we are fortunate to have numerous Vietnamese options in the area, try them all and pick your favorite. For Minneapolis, you can't really go wrong!

Kinh Do is the best Vietnamese restaurant I have ever been to. I've been to many, FYI. I've been dining here for a looong time. The food, service and menu have been consistently amazing for years. The menu is traditional and true to culture, nothing unexpected and gross like cheeseburgers/Chinese/Italian. Just good-sorry, great-Vietnamese food. The decor and atmosphere are a bit outdated, but not tacky. The lighting isn't offensively artificial or anything and the location is pleasant. Take out is also amazingly fresh and consistent. The prices are pretty fair, average. The taste/quality is above average and the portions are fairly large. I can tell fresh ingredients are used because the food is never "fishy", stale or oily. The chicken is white breast meat, not dark scrap crap. Love it!

Ive been coming here for years and had mostly enjoyable experiences but recently the quality hasnt been pushing me to go back. Beef Pad Thai should be the staple of a Vietnamese restaurant one would think. I ordered mine spicy. You would think spicy at a Vietnamese restaurant would bring the heat but this was about as spicy as ketchup. I asked for a bottle of hot sauce to heat it up and the bottle I got was a sweet pepper tasting sauce. The cranberry cream cheese wontons are my favorite thing there. Last time I ordered them I received regular cream chesse wontons despite clearly ordering cranberry :/ Overall the food is alright. I remember the Pho beef noodle soup being pretty solid, but my last few meals here have been lacking flavor and heat I'm looking for.

Every time we go we never order enough Potatoes and Mock Duck. The first time I came here I was thinking there was no way I was ordering potatoes at a Vietnamese place when I come for all the asian veggies, big mistake. Get the potatoes!

Kinhdo is a solid Vietnamese staple Uptown. I've tried several things and my go-to's are General Tso's Chicken and Holy Basil - I love basil and it really brightens up the dish. But my absolute favorite dish on the menu is the Beef with Potatoes - tender beef and onions tossed together with deep fried potatoes, yes please! The potatoes are thinly sliced like chips and have an amazing crunchy, sauce-coated texture. Also noteworthy are the egg rolls. Super crispy and a tad greasy on the outside - just the way I like them. They also come with this lovely dipping sauce though I couldn't tell you what it is exactly other than delicious. The atmosphere of Kinhdo is, well, nonexistent. Walking in the first time it reminded me of those drab hotel conference rooms. Luckily I prefer to go the take-out route with Kinhdo - every time I order it's always ready very quickly, less than 15-20 minutes. And very reasonable pricing for the large portions you get. I recommend splitting an appetizer and entree with someone or else be prepared to eat leftovers.

This restaurant has one of the better interiors compared to other vietnamese restaurants, but the pho was subpar in comparison to other restaurants near in the area. The soup was "cool" and the noodles were undercooked. There was absolutely no variety in the types of beef in the soup. My girlfriend got the chicken fried rice and it was quite delicious. I would not recommend the pho but would recommend the fried rice.

SOLID Delicious food, friendly service and HUGE portions. You can't go wrong here. Great food to pick up on a lazy night or dine in at their convenient uptown location with a free parking lot. My go to is extra spicy Pad Thai that serves 3 and an order of fresh spring rolls packed with glory. See you there! Highlights: Pad Thai Spring rolls Lo mein with beef Kinhdo = They're in my speed dial.

  • Cassi N.

I took one star off because the rest of Kinhdo's food is still good, but not a 5-star like their pho. I tried their beef and potatoes after reading a review raving about them. It wasn't bad but the potatoes were pretty soggy, no where near the crisp slices I was expecting. I've also had the beef lomein since my last review and it was exactly the kind of lomein I like with big, thick noodles. I don't know why, but I hate skinny noodle lomein. Another win for Kinhdo. But, as many yelpers have pointed out, there's not a lot of true Vietnamese food on the menu. Stick with the pho!

Many reviews here are critical of non-traditional dishes... want Pad Thai? Go to a Thai restaurant!!! General Tso's??? Seriously??? Kindho has been thriving in that spot since mid 80's!! They have, HANDS DOWN the best Imperial Eggrolls anywhere within hundreds of miles.... If you know what to order when dining Vietnamese, they rule!!

Good standard Pad Thai along with a variety of Chinese dishes and mock meat dishes. Our waitress totally fooled me and the egg rolls were great despite the artistically elongated length, use your dirty imagination. Portions were big enough for a leftovers meal, new standard go to place in my hood.

Best egg rolls ever! This place will deliver a solid meal, every time. Conveniently located, on Hennepin Avenue in uptown, this neighborhood gem, even has it's own parking available. Fresh ingredients, full menu and traditional staples, guarantee that you'll find something you like.

I've walked past Kinhdo about a thousand times and have seen countless people walking out or the restaurant with takeout orders, and finally I see why. The boy and I wandered in on a Friday night and were seated promptly by the hostess next to a pretty eclectic crowd - everyone from families with babies in high chairs to a table of tattooed Uptowners celebrating a birthday. We got an order of tofu spring rolls and the mock duck basil stir fry. OMG. That stir-fry. It seriously tasted like a broth-less pho. So good. Big chunks of red and green peppers and onions nestled in with a huge pile of rice noodles, basil, and sauce - amazing. We both have a mild obsession with mock duck, and it was done perfectly. The spring rolls were so-so (I still stand by my opinion that Chiang Mai has the best spring rolls in Uptown, if not in the city of Minneapolis). Not enough cilantro or other veg besides the cabbage/lettuce. The dipping sauce was pretty phenom, though. And I appreciate that they bake/saute their tofu to crisp it up a little. Kinhdo is definitely a worthwhile place to drop in for a quick, delicious meal, or to get takeout from. I'll be back!

I love this place! I always like everything I get here! The cranberry wontons and eggroll salad with beef are my favorites. There is always a nice older woman working that is very funny and makes the best jokes. I love her.

Lemongrass beef is to die for! Egg rolls are fantastic too. Ordered to go when I got there and walked out less than 10 minutes later.

I got takeaway and it was really subpar - maybe the Pho is their thing? I got chicken in garlic sauce. Hard to screw up yet they did. No sauce to speak of - too much corn starch had rendered the entire dish gloopy. I"d ordered it spicy so their answer was more red pepper flakes and tons of black pepper. Ironically, you could not taste any garlic. Vegetables were cooked to mush - the pea pods seemed boiled, completely limp and mushy. even the carrots were sort of mushy. the chicken is dark meat and plenty of inedible bits - sinew, membrane, ugh. I mean, this is simple stir fry and it was pretty disappointing. won't be going back.

I think this is by far the best Asian food that I have had! I had the cashew beef and the egg rolls and both dishes were excellent. I generally do not try beef dishes in Asian restaurants, but I was very satisfied with how the beef was prepared here. Only bad thing was the hours--closes at 9:00 on weekdays which is early when going out for an evening if you work late, etc.

Completely pointless, miniscule Viet percentage on menu and bad Chinese food. PLEASE go to eat st. or stp if you think this is good Vietnamese food. So why three stars? Greasy Imperial Egg Rolls, one of my favorite guilty pleasure versions. I know they're terrible, but in a way filled with win. Thai iced tea. You get a lot in a to-go and it's good. "Special" soup when you have a cold and want a veggie laden boring chicken soup. This is the inspiration for my "I can't explain" list.

Kinh Do is a notch above your average unidentifiable pan-Asian joint. I found the service to be friendly and prompt and my food arrived quickly. The ambience is decent---not quite a strip mall buffet, but not classy either. They have a huge selection of vegetarian dishes (many of which may or may not contain fish/oyster sauce, so make sure to ask) all of which are stir-fry variations on mock duck or tofu. I had a mock duck with cashew nuts. It was fairly tasty; I liked the sour-tart flavor added to the mix by the banana peppers, and I appreciated the large portion size. But the mock duck wasn't cooked very much and must have been dropped into the wok straight out of the can, which is typical of most places that serve mock duck, but disappointing every time nonetheless. Another downer: no brown rice. Why is it so hard for places to serve brown rice? It's healthier, tastier and, these days, roughly the same price as white rice. Kinh Do seems good for take-out and attracts regulars. I like their hours and their location but, in terms of food, I'd rather go to Evergreen or Jasmine 26, which are fresher, more unusual and have a personalized touch.

Do not -- I repeat -- DO NOT order the lunch specials here. It is literally straight out of a can, compliments of La Choy. We ordered the Chicken Chow Mein with fried rice and fried chicken wings. The Chicken chow mein was some overcooked mush over La Choy crispy noodles (often used in Asian chicken salads for a crunch). It's ridiculous that any restaurant owner/chef can serve that with a straight face. I understand Kinh Do is an inexpensive, family owned restaurant and my expectations were therefore not high, but opening a can of cheap slop posing as Chinese food, heating it up, and plopping it on a plate to serve to customers is downright insulting. The fried rice was also a joke. There was not a single ingredient other than rice. No vegetables. No eggs. No meat. Not even a speck of green onions for color. It was just brown greasy rice (and the "brown" didn't taste like soy sauce so I'm not sure what caused the brown color). On top of all that, it was stale, dry and warm. The worst excuse for fried rice I've ever eaten. The lunch was so bad we had to flag down the manager and tell him we wanted to return it and order something else. Three of the four people in my party returned their lunches. They were that bad. For my second lunch, I ordered the beef Pho. This was actually really good. No complaints! My fiance ordered the Chicken Bun (Vietnamese noodle salad) with egg rolls. Our server conveniently failed to mention that she would be adding an order of eggrolls for $4.79 on top of his order of the noodles. (In many Vietnamese restaurants, it's common to get Bun with both meat and eggrolls.) So when the bill came, his noodle dish cost nearly $13 instead of $8. I explained to the manager that we wouldn't have ordered the eggrolls if we knew we'd be charged for an entire appetizer. He basically threw his server under the bus, saying she should've told us, but there was nothing he could do about the charge and if I wanted to take it out her tip, go ahead. So, even though the Pho was good, and the Bun was good, we will never be going back to Kinh Do because 1) I can't eat at an Asian restaurant that serves La Choy and 2) the manager was very unprofessional and treated his employee so badly. He definitely had the power to take off or at least minimize the eggroll charge, and he chose not to do it. I guess I should just be happy he didn't charge us for the daily lunch special we ordered. I'm guessing he was okay throwing it out because it probably cost him $1 at the most. I'm actually a bit sad about today's experience because we live close to Kinh Do and I enjoy supporting family-owned restaurants. Plus, I love Vietnamese and Chinese food and it offers both (although the Chinese part is highly questionable). In any case, I will be giving Szechuan Spice and Quang's my business until I discover something else.

Do not come here expecting Viet food that you'd get on Nicollet. I'm sure the folks can cook it but they don't at the restaurant. Kihndo had a Richfield location, and it was our family spot when I was a kid. We discovered the beef and potatoes dish when I was around 8 years old and I've been addicted since. I haven't tried many of the dishes on here because they seem like watered down American Chinese for the most part. Do yourself a favor and get the egg rolls and beef and potatoes. You won't regret it if you want something hot and crispy.

  • John C.

My favorite egg rolls around, they make them just the way I like everything, long, thick and garlicy. And like the Marathon just down 28th (@ Lyndale), they offer a discount for paying in cash.

  • Steve R.

Kihndo has been my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Uptown for many years. Their egg rolls remain the standard to beat for me. They are served with a dipping cup of fish oil. The menu is quite varied (beef, pork, duck, chicken, tofu, vegetarian) and has a good variety of spiciness to the entrees. Always had great servers, and the staff have smiles on and actually seem to care about helping, if you have questions. Prices are decent, and quantities are ample -- Pork in Garlic Sauce (my favorite) will run you about 12 bucks, but you will walk out with more than enough for another meal. When I am in Uptown, I make the time for them.

    (5)
  • Marie S.

Kihndo is one if my favorite take out Asian restaurants! The chicken pho and shredded chicken dishes are two of the best and their portions are huge for the price. One order can be split about 3 ways. I will admit that for people who love spice, their dishes will need a side of sriracha but overall, given the value and location, Kinhdo is four stars.

  • Ben D.

As great as this place may be, I still don't think of it as somewhere that I would be a regular at! The food is pretty good, (eggrolls in particular) and I love hte Pad Thai. The reason I have to knock points off is because of the irritating wait staff, the cash/credit policy, and the generally snobbish crowd that seems to come here from the burbs. If this place had a little more ambiance, and a little more flair, I think I might have rated it four stars... But I would be really hard pressed to give it 5, maybe if the owner paid me...

The vegetarian egg rolls are the best I have ever had and maybe the largest as well. And I consider myself an egg roll snob because i try them everywhere. I have yet to have one that is even a close second. They are crispy with a very special batter, greasy, huge and delicious. The food is not amazingly great but it is certainly good. The dinner entrees are huge. if you can finish a dinner entree you can pack in some food. I went with a friend and he ate all his but purely because he had to prove he could finish. He looked like he was going to explode after. I brought my leftovers home and ate two more times. Two people could easily split an order of the egg rolls and an entree and walk out of there plenty satisfied. I like going there and the prime unstoppable force that brings me back is periodic cravings for those egg rolls! i want some now!

Great mock duck curry (add veggies!!). I pretty much exclusively order carry-out and it's always hot and fast with large portions.

I have been coming here since I was about 6, and I still get the Mock Duck and Potatoes every single time, along with the Veggie Egg Rolls as an appetizer. Super greasy, but even my husband (who's been to SE Asia and hates fried food) loves the Egg Rolls. YUM!!! I can't wait to go tonight! Seriously the best for those items.

This restaurant is veggie heaven. They have so many options for vegetarians, but do fall short of Evergreen in offering anything beyond mock duck and tofu. Nonetheless, I've always had a good meal there. One of my favorites is the rice noodle salad with tofu. You'd think this would be pretty simple, but I've had some pretty weak versions of this dish at other restaurants. My only suggestions would be to slow down the service to make it more of a dining experience and to offer wine. But the food needs no improvement.

Honestly not sure what the appeal is. Granted I only got the spring rolls (veggie) but since they only contained lettuce and maybe a shred of carrot they are hands down the lamest spring rolls I have ever had. And given that I base my judgement of a good Vietnamese restaurant on their spring rolls I doubt I will be returning. The only thing that may sway my decision is all the positive feedback already listed on this site.

The spring rolls are AMAZING! This is definitely one of the best Vietnamese places in the metro. Service is always friendly! My fiance always gets their pad thai and I bounce around the chicken dishes...and have yet to be disappointed. If you haven't been there yet and looking for a new place to try, you have to go to Kinhdo! Update: Went last night and had the chicken lo mein - it's officially my staple dish at Kinhdo! Simply delicious!

this used to be my favorite Vietnamese food place but i feel over the last few years, the quality of dishes have gone down. prices remain moderate to high unless you get a lunch special. Service is friendly, dishes are often loaded with onions and/or celery to mask the lack of more expensive vegetables and meats. if you're looking for fresh, high quality foods go to Lotus on grant street in loring park. it's in a small strip mall but has soups, spring rolls and other dishes to die for!

To sum up Kinhdo in five words or less, we would call it, " A Great Little Vietnamese Diner." The atmosphere is not what I would write home about in this little gem but the food is a whole different story. From the soups, to the noodle dishes, and on to the rice entrees, there is just a whole lot of flavor and variety packed into each dish. The portions are ample and service is good. Prices are very reasonable given the portion sizes. Expect to pay between $30-$40 for a dinner for 2 with soups, appetizers, and a couple of entrees. We love the place for a quick lunch that's not meat between two slices of bread!!

The last two times I've been to KinhDo, I haven't been impressed. Around this time last year, I went with my family and had shrimp lomein. The shrimp were tiny, flavorless, and the whole dish was so greasy and saturated with onions (white and green) that I couldn't eat much of it. I also had a really awful aftertaste in my mouth/throat the rest of the day. Last night, my boyfriend and I decided to give it a go. Sub zero temps make hot food as opposed to a cold sandwich sound extremely appealing--sorry Milio's, you were beat out this time, but soon we shall dine together! I love the fact that they have a parking lot. I didn't want to end up like the joker in the van who parked on top of a mountain of snow/ice who looked like he was going to topple over into the street. :P We sat ourselves, like the sign commanded us to do. Our server came over right away with glasses of water, but didn't come back for at least five minutes after that initial contact. We were beyond ready to order when she came back. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken, the boyfriend ordered their combination soup and an iced Thai tea. The food came out relatively quickly, which was nice, since we were starving! My food came first, and the boyfriend's soup was about three minutes behind. Why the kitchen couldn't coordinate that is beyond me, but whatever. We had a few bites of my chicken while we waited. Off the bat, I was unimpressed by how fatty nearly all of the chicken was. I had to spit out several pieces of solid fat. :( The veggies were a great mix, crisp and fresh. I was unimpressed by the spice level--the only reason it was spicy was all of the black pepper they put on the dish, and I found it spicy because I'm allergic to black pepper. My boyfriend tried it and tasted no spice other than the pepper. My eyes were watering and my tongue was tingling, and he couldn't detect the heat. Had to be the pepper. The waitress didn't believe me, and wouldn't take it back to be remade or taken off the bill. I ate as much as I could, but had to stop so I could continue breathing. My boyfriend was impressed by his soup and tea, which made me happy that something didn't suck. The server was missing in action, and I had to hunt her down to get my water re-filled. I found her standing in the kitchen area eating something that she shoved in her mouth when she realised I was standing in front of her, and didn't wash her hands before filling a pitcher with ice and water. Prices were high, but portions were big, so I guess it evens out. They do offer a 3% discount if you use cash. Clever! It's disappointing, but I'm thinking I'm not going to be heading back to KinhDo again any time soon. :( I'll get my Asian food fix elsewhere, thanks.

The 4 stars is for the hot and spicy chicken. One of my favorite Vietnamese dishes and they do a real good version of it, and give you a large plate of it. Boneless chicken with a deelicious sauce consisting of sauteed lemon grass and onions with a sprinkle of red pepper. So far I've only had a better one at Vina. The dining atmosphere here is really nice, and large as well. Maybe some of thier other stuff is lousy, I don't know but thier hot n spicy chicken is great.

Synopsis: Good, not great. Adequate service. Vegetarian friendly. 3.5/5 Kinh Do calls itself a Vietnamese restaurant, but really seems to be a fairly ordinary Chinese-American restaurant with some occasional Vietnamese dishes sprinkled into the menu. The food is hit or miss, both between dishes and between visits. As I live only a few blocks away, I end up ordering take out on a semi-regular basis, and it is always a crapshoot. Sometimes the meals are delicious, many other times, the meals are barely adequate. However, I must say it has never been outright bad. Service is friendly, if a bit neglectful, when dining in, but takeout is always speedy. I have never had to wait much more than 15 minutes for my food to be ready. Being a vegetarian, it is nice to visit a Chinese-style restaurant that has more than 3 meatless dishes on the menu. In this regard, Kinh Do really pulls its weight. Many classically meat-based dishes can be made with tofu or mock duck instead, such as Mongolian Mock Duck or Sesame tofu. I've found that the "traditional Vietnamese" dishes served here are generally substandard, especially given the high standard of excellence set by other nearby establishments (like half of eat street!!) It is an amusing irony that a restaurant that considers itself "vietnamese" succeeds much more in its Chinese dishes. The Sesame Tofu is great, one of my favorite dishes here, and the Pineapple Fried Rice is HEAVENLY. The portions, as noted in nearly every review, are generous, which helps offset somewhat the slightly higher-than-average prices for asian food in Minneapolis. Still, gotta look on the bright side: it's a lot cheaper than almost anything in NYC! The restaurant is vegetarian friendly, but meat-eaters may be less pleased (couldn't tell ya!) I like Kinh Do, but I do not love it. If I didn't live so close, I'm sure my patronage would see a STEEP decline. As it is, I'm satisfied, but rarely thrilled.

Stopped by for a Sunday afternoon lunch. Overall food was good, not great. Slightly on the bland side, plenty of food for leftovers. Service was helpful though a bit slow. Casual comfortable decor, felt pretty clean. Would go again

Egg rolls were crispy and good. Pad thai was amazing. Price is right. The woman serving our group was hilarious which made the experience even better.

I have a warm spot in my heart for Kihndo because it was the first Vietnamese restaurant I ever went to. I still go occasionally, and I always have the same thing--Vietnamese egg rolls and chicken lemon grass. They'll actually make it hot if you ask for it.

Solid Chinese food. If I were rating this place purely on eggrolls and the amount of pretty but obnoxious looking young women it would get 5 stars. I'm gonna go listen to Megadeth now.

Food here is good, but not great. Its very basic and Americanized, and the prices do not reflect that. The portion sizes are acceptable, beer is expensive. I get the distinct sense that this place thinks its much nicer than it is. There's mood lighting, but the service is awful. The menu's are nicer than your average delivery chinese menu, but the bathroom is a single, decrepit stall in the basement. I'm cool with that stuff if the prices reflect it, but this place definitely doesn't.

I ate here with a group of other vegans recently. I was disappointed when the group chose this venue - it definitely wouldn't be my first choice based on one previous visit years ago. But I ended up having a lovely time and enjoyed my food well enough. I got 3 meals out of it, so I guess it was a good value. Mostly, I was impressed with our server. I didn't catch his name, but apparently he's worked there forever. He was really fantastic and is what made me give it 3 stars over just 2.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in the Cities. Great vegetarian options, decent prices and, really, everything on the menu is delicious. Granted I've been going there semi-regularly for years, but I am always touched that the staff is cheerful and happily remembers me. Once, when I my family visited (and of course I took them there), the waitress asked, "Is this your mother?" and when I answered in the affirmative she replied, "Finally." Also, there is the classic guarantee of great Asian food-- the music they play is a bizarre mix of random English-language songs, from contemporary country to talk radio to The Current. It's weird but always manages to be a nice and welcoming atmosphere.

Pretty tasty Asian fare. Unlike some of the other people reviewing this place, I could give two shits if it's Vietnamese or Chinese. It's tastes good and it's not a Leann Chin. Big portions and reasonable prices and our service on Saturday night was excellent. He checked back frequently and and kept or beverages full. Gold star for him. I had a scallop and shrimp dish with a good pile of veggies and little baby corn cobs. Those are fun.

Kihndo is not too bad. But it's definitely not my favorite place to go to when I'm cravin' asian. I was brought here by a friend that raaaaaaaaves about how great they are. I've been recommended to check this place out by others, so I figured it'd be a good deal. First of all, don't come here if you're broke and your date is a cheap skate. I ended up paying about $15 total after splitting an app, getting a coke to drink and ordering some chicken/peanut/lo-mein dish. Yikes! The dish was not that impressive. Especially not for the price. And I didn't even get any rice to take home with my left overs, so minus 10 points and add a thumbs down on that one. You gotta have the rice! I actually didn't really dig the appetizer either. The atmosphere of the place was pretty decent. The wait staff was friendly and personable, however this might be because I went to dine-in with a regular. The waiter asked my friend how things were going and some other questions that made me feel like the waiter paid attention to the blathering my date does when he goes to eat there. So, that was a nice little perk. I wouldn't say that this is a bad place to eat, but I think Minneapolis has a lot more to offer. Perhaps it was all the hype surrounding this restaurant that got me all excited to try it. Don't believe the hype, people!! It's just a run of the mill restaurant. Sorry Kihndo!!

Been a haunt of mine for many years, including the (now closed) Kindho in Richfield. I have tried almost everything, but my favorite is still Spicy Chicken, and the great eggrolls.

We ordered pad thai, beef curry and holy basil. All of the food was very tasty and came in large portions but also came with a price. Every dish was above $10 which I thought was a little high. The rice included w/ the beef curry and holy basil were small, our server combined the rice included w/ these dishes in a single bowl which was not enough. The low rating is due to the horrendous service. Our waitress had a thick Vietnamese accent which was tough to understand. She refilled our rice bowl only after we were already done eating. When we asked for plastic to go containers for our leftovers with sauce she was hesitant to give us more then one. The restaurant offers 3% off if you pay w/ cash, which we did but never got our change back. What happened was right before our leftovers were packed we ordered a side or rice since they didn't give us much, the rice cost $1.25 which they decided to pay from the change I was suppose to get, they never told us they were going to do this so we waited and waited for our change and only when we asked for our change they told us what they had done, very unprofessional. I had to eye the waitress for 5 mins just to ask to get my water refilled and keep in mind the restaurant was empty only one other person was eating there at the same time. I would not recommend anyone to eat at the restaurant but rather suggest to them to get to go instead since the food was good. But take this suggestion light hearted because I have not yet gotten to go from this place and don't know if the portions are reduced. So be warned.

I think the last time I went here, I took a vegan out to eat. She said something about my leather shoes, so I thought that I'd just have some tofu and veggies as well that evening. She was happy with the food and I found it largely unremarkable. The other reviewers have a point though. It's not very Vietnamese per say. It's on par with many of the usual Chinese restaurants that cater to "non-authentic" cooking as to remain open and have customers.

Yeah, don't be fooled by them. This is more Chinese food than Vietnamese food. I would know, I'm Vietnamese. I hate more than anything a restaurant that can't distinguish itself from others. Otherwise...I suppose it's okay if you're looking for cheap Americanized asian food.

  • Alison M.

Duh this is not Vietnamese food. I dont even know what country this food supposedly hails from. I would venture a guess but I'd rather not spend too much time re-thinking what it was that I ate. All the food was covered in some weird goopy sauce that was part reddish oil and part orange lard. Oh and the inside looks like a converted Perkins. Sick sick sick in so many ways.

This place is great for what it is, and it is not the ONE TROO AUTHENTIC. The food is cheap and tasty, and really, isn't that all that's necessary?

I'm totally obsessed with their eggrolls, but otherwise Kinhdo offers pretty much the same stuff as other Vietnamese/pan asian places around town, only for a couple bucks more. Those eggrolls just keep steering me back to the place, and their vegertarian options are plentiful.

    (3)
  • Eric O.

No, it's not really authentic, but I don't give a damn. There are plenty of options for vegetarians. The stir-fry potatoes with mock duck is awesome (note to fellow vegetarians: I stress the mock duck part, as the potato dish doesn't work well with tofu for some reason). The sesame tofu and tofu spring rolls are decent. I like to finish off a meal with a Vietnamese coffee. It's served in a glass with condensed milk on the bottom and the coffee filter on top. It takes about 5-10 minutes for the coffee to completely drip through, then it is mixed with the milk, and if you desire, poured into a glass of ice.

  • Jasmine M.

Kinhdo is cheap, and has large portions. The staff-superfriendly and accomodating. shrimp with garlic sauce was pretty good, but yes I agree with the other reviewers the food is pretty non-descript and not very special. Cream cheese wontons? Not super authentic. But, if you're hungry, a vegetarian, broke, or all three, Kinhdo is a good bet.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
