I will never not love Great Wall. Have been coming here for 15 years and will continue to do so

My favorite Chinese in Minnesota. Kung Pao chicken is very good, and available at the lunch buffet Mondays and Fridays.

This place is terrible. I am absolutely flabbergasted by the high number of 5 star reviews. I ordered the vegetable kung pao, which should have been spicy. When it arrived it was tepid at best, and the sauce was not spicy. At all. Like, stale black pepper would have kicked it up a lot. There were whole chili peppers in it though, which supports my hypothesis that it was canned sauce and vegetables with peppers stirred in just before serving. If it had been heated up with the peppers, at least some of the flavor would have transferred. The real insult to injury though was the apathetic service and expense of the food. It was twice what I would have ended up paying for much better Chinese in CA - I mean, gross egg rolls and kung pao for $22?!?!

This was a great place! it was very tasty, quick, and nice service! Beef and broccoli was exceptional! The sweet and sour chicken was delicious, too. It wasn't overly greasy, but greasy enough to be totally yummy :)

This restaurant is mediocre to me. I ordered the Peking Scallops and found them average. I wasn't impressed, but they were not bad. It was a lighter sauce which I found complimentary to the scallops, but it did not have any depth of flavor like ginger or garlic. They were just ok. The scallops were a good size and cooked well, but they didn't have that creamy sweetness that I was looking for. The service was excellent.

I have been a fan of Great Wall Restaurant since I lived in the neighborhood over 10 years ago. I love the take-out menu and make it a point to stop by and pick up an order anytime I have a good reason to. I'm a vegetarian and they are always willing to make any dish vegetarian friendly for me. The staff treats us like friends and when we lived in the neighborhood, the owner actually sent holiday cards to our home.

I've been going here since I was a little boy...five years old to be precise. And nineteen years later, still a patron. Andy and Paula are the most hospitable and warm people imaginable, the food is delicious, consistent, and delightful, and hopefully this place will be around long after I'm dead.

Small takeout menu compared to other Chinese food joints I have sampled, and prices are higher than others I have tried. Their wonton soup is absolutely horrible and a sorry excuse for soup, with tiny little pieces of overcooked pork in flat and bland wontons, plus it had very dark broth with a film coating the surface. Usually I find wonton soup is a clearer broth, and there were no vegetables in it, and I had to ask for green onions on top, which the owner said most people don't like; I guess people don't know that green onion is a nice thing about wonton soup. The owner was nice though, but there are better Chinese/Asian places in the cities.

Was really craving some Mongolian beef and this was the closest Chinese restaurant. It was hands down the worst Mongolian beef I've ever had. It was over cooked, dry, and tasteless. I actually had to put salt on it just to choke if down. I'll take a longer drive next time.

Wow! The Ginger Chicken Hot Pot is awesome! Tons of whole roasted garlic cloves, seared green beans, ginger, and scallions make this delicious. My new favorite dish.

Great Wall is quite delicious. We had their Shanghai Dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), Shanghai Chow Mein, and Singaporean Noodles... all were exceptionally tasty. The dumplings were on point. The Singaporean noodles are amazing. I couldn't stop going back for more. The Shanghai Chow Mein was okay, the udon was a bit on the chewy side. The service was great and the owner is incredibly friendly. He came to talk to us for a bit and had good conversation with my parents. Definitely a place I plan on going back to often!

Oh. My. God. Both stars are for the service, the wonderful warm waitress, the owners. Man, I hate to write this. BUT - No. Just - no. I'm mad at Yelpers, the good reviews reeled me in. I dropped over 50 bucks here on food that is only ten percent better than that at Red Pepper. The steamed buns were a highlight - so I know SOMEone in that kitchen can actually cook. I blame Minnesota. This doesn't even approach what Chinese-food-dumbed-down-for-old-Jewish-Ladies-in-The-Bronx should be at it's MINIMUM. Sorry. I am beginning to despair of ever finding good Chinese food in Mpls. Tonight is my final attempt. I am beginning to think all Chinese food in this town caters to the worst, sugariest, blandest whims of white people palates (of which I am one, but I spent my formative years going to Chinatown every five minutes.)

A group of 6 of us came here at 12:15 looking to chow down on some Chinese lunch buffet. No expectations beforehand. When we first got there all the buffet bins were the bottom scrapings and we started to regret our decision. The owner kept saying 5 minutes for new dishes and they rapidly pulled out refills. The buffet spread was nothing special, your typical beef with brown sauce, chicken with brown sauce, fried rice (superior to any I've had), white rice, fried noodles, General's/sesame chicken (subpar), sweet and sour chicken, cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and maybe 1 or 2 other misc. items. Small, but less oily and marginally more flavorful than other chinese buffets I've been to. Worth a trip in the area but don't go out of your way for. There was a good crowd moving through the restaurant so it's not some out-of-the-way infrequented divey hole (I don't think any exist in Edina).

Terrible! The lemon chicken was half cooked, the tangerine beef was like leather, the fried dumpling casings were thick and doughy. We threw our takeout meals away and will never go back.

Just got take out from this place. We ordered the steamed dumplings, beef and broccoli and egg rolls. The beef in the beef and broccoli was chewy and squishy, which is questionable. It also had a strange after taste. The egg rolls were stale and overstuffed with cabbage. The dumplings were also stale and squishy. Overall, the food was okay. I probably wouldn't go back considering the prices.

We live around the corner from this place, so we've been eying it for a bit. Ordered for pickup for dinner tonight, and there aren't many better things for staying in from the cold! Everything was plenty rich and hearty; the hot and sour soup was thick and flavorful, pork with garlic was great on top of rice, and the General Tso's chicken was spot on. It was a bit much price-wise for Chinese take-out, but it's worth the money for the quality. Also, the meals came with an order of rice each, but we only got one small container between the two, so make sure you get a little extra! Definitely want to try for lunch!

I'm not quite sure what to think of Great Wall. To both of our surprise though the food was quite good. I ordered a special, 'Shanghai Noodle' which was pretty tasty, albeit simple. They have a lot of dishes you would find at a typical americanized Chinese restaurant but do it pretty well. The second time, however, was a disaster. We went for lunch but didn't get the buffet - I had a soup that not only tasted like it was 80% oil, but actually looked like a bowl filled with canola oil. Probably one of the most unpleasant things I've ever tasted, and out of the three dishes we all ordered together all work luke warm and tasteless. Summary: Eating here may be a bit of a gamble, and definitely isn't authentic, but may be worth trying if you don't feel like making a trip to some of the better Chinese restaurants in the area.

Tonight was a good night. I have been on a quest in St.Paul to find GOOD chinese food and I had to go back to Minneapolis where I used to live to find it. It had been years(12) since I had been to the Great Wall (only because I moved to St.Paul) so tonight being in Edina my wife and I went to have dinner. First, the owner, who years ago knew me well because I ate there a lot recognized me and instead of the waitress he waited on my wife and I the entire evening. So to skip the bull s*#@# - this place is HANDS DOWN the BEST chinese food in the twin cities - period. Portions, real thought out intense flavors, and outstanding selections. I challenge anyone to tell me of a place that is better than this and I WILL go and try it. But sorry to let you down already because you are wrong - this place is better. Go ahead....accept my challenge. I am waiting I will be absent no more.

We went there the other night, with reservations, and the place was chaos... The greeter ignored us for over 30 minutes....would not provide eye contact, or explain why our table was not available. (for 7 people)..... Rude, not helpful, argumentative... We left for The Red Pepper...excellent food, and we felt welcomed. We have been customers for over 30 years....Andy sold the restaurant, and the new staff and owner is not doing a very good job in our opinion.

I came here for the lunch buffet and had a wonderful time. Usually, buffets are full of nasty, soggy, questionable looking mush. At great wall everything was crispy and FRESH. The chicken will peppers was amazing and the peppers were cooked perfectly-they even had a crunch. The chowmein was so yumms-extremely flavorful and low on grease. There's nothing worse then noodles submerged in an oil bath. Also, note that the service was fantastic. There is this friendly dude who has the biggest smile! Good for small groups and I'll be coming back for dinner soon!

Went to the Great Wall Restaurant on my lunch hour. I wanted to take advantage of their buffet. I thought by coming just a little bit past 11, the food would be hot and freshly made. A couple of the dishes were nicely hot (temperature wise). Most of them were not. Rest just luke warm :( Some soggy. Some hard to eat because they were over cooked already almost like being re-warmed. Not a good experience. Sorry... Wont' be back.

My first time experiencing great walls food was subpar. I ordered the general tso's chicken and my friend got the chow mein. We got our food to go and when we got home we were surprised to find only one little box of white rice for the both of us. I don't know why they skimp on white rice, I mean rice is pretty cheap... And when your paying $14 for an average order of general tso's, it doesn't make me very happy. The flavor wasn't anything special either. At least it wasn't overly sweet like many other Chinese restaurants but still lacking in the hot and spicy category (I asked for it hot and spicy too). The food just wasn't that good, but maybe it was what I ordered. I'm willing to try great wall one more time, hopefully it'll be better next time.

I had high hopes for the lunch buffet, but it was a let-down: the food was greasy, bland, and lukewarm. It was expensive, since none of us went back up for seconds, and a 10-yr old kid was charged the adult price, though he ate mere nibbles from the plate. I'll never go back for the buffet again. I've had takeout twice from Great Wall and enjoyed it, but it wasn't stellar either time. The eggplant was greasy and overcooked, and Buddha's Delight was in a thin, blah sauce. Bummer. I want to like you, Great Wall, I really do. I'd love to see an awesome Chinese takeout place near the lakes, but I don't think you're it.

I've been going to this place with my family for as long as I can remember. I love this place! The service is always fantastic, fast and friendly. We generally sit in the right wing of the restaurant, and Raymond, who seems to serve on that side during dinner, is adorable and an absolute joy to be around. My daughter and I usually split the Shanghai Udon with pork, which is absolutely delicious. I'm a bit of an udon nazi, and this dish is perfectly cooked every time. It appears simple, but is so flavorful! My husband didn't want to try it, but had a bite of mine tonight and is now hooked too! The spring rolls could use improvement, the chicken is a little bland, but they're passable. The lemongrass beef vermicelli dish is TO DIE FOR and the delicately spiced fish sauce they serve with it is out of this world. My dad always gets the chicken with garlic sauce, which is really yummy. They could probably improve on the egg foo young, as the sauce is a little too thin for my taste. I hope to try everything on their new menu (which comes as a separate laminated sheet, make sure you look for it. The offerings on this menu do not seem to have made it online yet) because everything on there sounds yummy. This place isn't the most authentic Chinese by an any stretch of imagination, but it is FAR, FAR better than your average sh***y dime-a-dozen "Chinese" sweet and sour graveyard. It is definitely worth trying. If you order take out, make sure to order extra white rice with your dish. They give you a ton for eat in, but take out tends to skimp on the white rice. If you're teetering on the edge, teeter no more. Give it a try!

Word of warning, if you are picking up delivery you might have to wrestle someone for a spot. So get ready to rumble with all the folk flooding to Chatterbox. This is my go-to Chinese take-out, which isn't saying much since it's the only Chinese delivery in my immediate area that I am aware of. I'm totally fine with it. Nothing has ever impressed me, nor has anything bummed me out. I have to say, if there is one thing I do love from Great Wall, it's their egg drop soup. Now, I'm not aware of too many people who creave egg drop soup, but damn it, I'm one of them.

I've been going to the Great Wall for many years, and can honestly say I've never had a bad meal here. In fact, I can't recall a meal that wasn't great. The food is always hot and tastes fresh. You can tell the vegetables are always fresh and crisp. The staff does a great job and the owner is always concerned. The ambiance is better than the exterior of the strip mall would indicate. It was remodeled a few years ago and is very nice. My wife and I moved to Lakeville a number of years ago, and any time we can get a babysitter we still make the drive up to the Great Wall for our date night. It's worth it. We haven't found local Chinese this good anywhere else.

Great Chinese food should have nuanced flavors even when it's not spicy hot. This may be Great Wall's weakness. We went basic, since this was our first time ordering from here. We tried Mongolian beef, green beans, chicken cashew, and sizzling shrimp soup. All were fine but a bit bland and a bit overcooked (we got carryout). We'll probably give it one more try and see if we have better luck with other dishes.

So, I've lived in and around this place for over twenty years, and , if you can believe it, I never once ate here. I really don't know why, either. They've been here forever, and people always seem to have nice things to say about it. No real excuse for lack of attendance other than that I tend to go to Kwan's quite a bit. Well, I decided on the lunch buffet. As a former fat kid, I still love going to buffets. They're my favorite kind of restaurant. This buffet did not disappoint. The food was really tasty, and they actually had cream cheese wantons that weren't cloyingly sweet. Yeah! The service was really nice, too. I forgot that I had a restaurant.com coupon, and they had already given me the check. Luckily, they quickly added it without a fuss. Some Chinese places would have done a Linda Blair head spinning rendition if I had pulled that. Also, the place was super clean, and it had the appearance of being remodeled. It really didn't even look like a Chinese restaurant, which is a nice change of pace. Overall, I was really happy with my trip. I often have Mondays off, but Kwan's buffet is never open on Monday. Now, I can still get good Chinese buffet on Monday.

This is probably one of my most favorite restaurants. I stuff myself silly whenever I go here and there hasn't been one thing that I have ordered that I have disliked. When the food arrives, it just looks scrumptious. It's very glossy and you know that translates to extremely flavorful. Even in Chinatown in San Fran I haven't found a better Chinese food place! It's one of those classic amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurants in a strip mall next to a Nail Salon. The restaurant itself is modestly decorated and the service is pretty good. But I'm all about the take-out. A normal order for my family consists of Beef Brocolli, Kung-Pao Chicken, Sesame Chicken and Tangerine Beef. Sometimes we'll add egg rolls or potstickers or if we have a larger group also order Chicken Lo Mein or MuShu Pork. It's very saucy but even if you don't like sauce usually like me you'll just about want to lick your plate. It's about as close to perfect as food can get. But you'll have to try it to fully experience it. The best days to go are on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. The good chef is usually on and the flavor of the food is unreal. Not that it's not wonderful on weekdays, but there is a marked difference on the weekends. It's also definitely best to go here with a large group, then you are able to have some of a lot of different foods. The combination of different foods is part of what makes this place so amazing. It's a little pricier than Chinese Take-out usually is, but I promise that it's more than worth it.

I would list all of the things I have ordered and loved from the Great Wall (it's been my joint since I was a tot) but I would pretty much be copying and pasting the entire menu on here. The food is something that I crave as soon as I land at MSP because there is no good Chinese food to be had in the DC area and I always need a fix. My general go-to's are the Chicken in Garlic Sauce, Cream Cheese Puffs, and Beef with Asparagus. Not only is the food good but the servers and staff have been around since I was a child, and they are extremely fast and helpful. Best Chinese in the Southwest Minneapolis area. Hands down.

i'm a little embarrassed about how long it took us to drag our asses over here. we've been at a loss for a good chinese takeout place in the 'hood and for some reason this just blended in. wow - this was surprisingly good. i have a standard litmus test for a chinese restaurant. how's the sesame chicken? pretty damn tasty. my wife's bean curd dish was a bit on the bland side, but the crispy green beans really hit the spot. we'll be back i'm sure. note well, the parking lot here is pretty tight. this isn't helped by its proximity to edina, where you're apt to be inundated with entitled asshats who are more than happy to simply park in the take-out spot if they can't find a parking spot close enough to suit their tastes. no joke.

I don't see what the big deal is about this place. I had the Kung Pao chicken for dinner on a Sunday. It wasn't remotely spicy and was completely saturated in salt and MSG. The average entree price is pushing $20, which is more than twice what anyone should be paying for Chinese of this caliber. My server was a terse older Chinese woman who was utterly impatient and uncaring, and who balked when I asked what the price of a Coke was because I didn't see it on the menu (it's $1.75 per CAN). Altogether, I think Great Wall is taking advantage of the fact that this is a relatively wealthy area and charging accordingly. I will say that the cream cheese puffs are pretty good, but they're a quarter the size of what you get anywhere else, yet they charge you the same price. Go to the Chatterbox if you can talk yourself out of Asian, you'll get a much better value. Otherwise head to the New China Wok up on 50th & France. The staff is a lot nicer and the food is better.

We finally turned over the right rock! Yipppeeee! it's a heck of a drive, but we'll do it because it's the best Chinese food we've found since we moved here. I'd actually eat in if I needed to. FINALLY!

I am constantly looking for the top Chinese place and so far, Great Wall has gotten the nod. While I have only gotten take out (for some reason I can't bring myself to eat at a Chinese restaurant....maybe i had a life changing experience as a child...) everything we had was excellent, albeit a little on the pricey side for take out Chinese. The lo-mein was hearty and non-greasy, the orange chicken was succulent and covered in sauce, the fried rices tended to be a little light (in my opinion) on the eggs and soy, but those are minor problems. I also really liked the steamed dumplings and the egg rolls. While I intend to continue my search, for the time being, Great Wall will tame my Chinese food crave.

The best Chinese in the Twin Cities bar none. They have take out, but I never go for that. Great Wall is a clean restaurant that has a pleasant setup and simple decor. Their house specialties menu is unreal. Their House Delight in Black Pepper Sauce is out of this world. Chicken and beef with some veggies in an awesome black pepper sauce that is served on a sizzling plate will have you licking your chops. Same thing goes for the pan fried chicken noodles. The beef in garlic sauce is great as is the beef chow fun. There are family style dinners with a bit more limited menu, but it comes with soup and an eggroll for two or more folks. The lunch menu is rock solid and a bit cheaper than dinner, plus there are also some combo meals here. I've never had the lunch buffet as I prefer stuff not from a steam table, but it looks solid, and always seems to have folks surrounding it. The wait staff is pretty awesome and old school there. It's just a plain great Chinese restaurant. Wish they were open right now!

In my opinion, there is no better Chinese restaurant in the entire world. Raymond, our server, has been working here for as long as it's been open (32 years). It's the place, with help from the owner, Andy, I've learned how to better my Cantonese and Szechuan sauces. The portions are extremely generous and cooked to perfection. They will accommodate any changes that you want to the items that you've ordered.to your liking ie, more vegetables. The shrimp were the size of prawns. The chicken is always tender as well as the beef. I always order something different and have never been disappointed.

Been going to Great Wall for my entire life and this place made me fall in love with Chinese food. Doesn't seem like the staff has ever changed. Don't think I have ever had a bad dish here. I also really like the lunch buffet even though they don't give you a ton of options. Go to Great Wall if you want the best Chinese food in the area.

Hands down the worst Chinese food I've ever eaten. This is the first time we tried this restaurant and we did takeout. The first thing I noticed when I opened the veggie lo mein was that the noodles were not lo mein noodles. The second thing was that it was incredibly dry. I figured that maybe the liquid had settled to the bottom but nope, that wasn't the case. We also ordered the lemon chicken which was incredibly greasy - it was so greasy that the batter didn't even stay on the chicken - it slid right off when I tried to cut through and the taste of grease over powered any flavor the chicken might have had. We also got the veggie (fried) spring rolls. Now I expect grease - fried is fried but these there horrible. I can't remember the last time I ordered egg rolls and only got little plastic packs of "sauce" to put on them. Blah!

My family was looking for a quick bite after seeing my cousin's school put on "Beauty and the Beast Junior" (sidenote: my cousin is 12 and there was reference to the Spice Girls in that play. Those kids were literally infants when the Spice Girls were in their prime. Where did they get that reference?), and I used my handy Yelp app on my phone to find a good place. This restaurant came up with good reviews and one citing it to be the best Chinese food "bar-none". That convinced us. We got in for an early dinner so we didn't have to wait to be seated. Ambience was fine, nothing special. We mused at which animal we were based on our year of birth and mulled over the menu. The menu, by the way, is enormous. So many options and specialties. They claim to be known for their Schezuan, so my uncle ordered that, and the rest of my family got typical Chinese grub: Chou mein, Sesame Chicken, General Tso's, etc. I wasn't very hungry (unfortunately) so I got ordered the wonton soup and vegetable eggrolls. The soup was good (can't go wrong with wonton soup) and the eggrolls were ok, but next time I'll get pork. The veggie versions were about 70% paper noodles, 28% carrot, and a tiny mushroom thrown in to make up the rest. No cabbage, nothing else. If it weren't for the fried goodness on the outside and the sweet and sour sauce I would have thought I was cardboard stuffed with some cold cardboard. Uncle said Schezuan was not as spicy as he would have liked, but otherwise good. I sampled the chicken dishes, they were delish, though, again, pretty standard stuff. Portions were huge, but the prices warrant that. Overall, not bad. I wouldn't call it the best bar-none, but I'd go back.

On my way home from work - so good for takeout. I have only sampled a couple entrees at this point but the reason I will go back is the fired rice. Not greasy or smoky tasting like so many other places and lots of bits of pork and egg. The best fired rice I have had in the Twin Cities.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
