Love. love, love this shop! I get the best, local and fresh foods here. My favorite part here is the cheese shop. I always recommend to people in line that they order the gourmet white cheddar cheese Prairie Breeze from a farm in Wisconsin. The cheese has these crystals that melt in your mouth. I like to have a simple night snack with eggplant or red pepper spread and a slice of this on a cracker. It is also yummy in a summer salad with apples and fig dressing.

I wanted to bring back some cheese from the heartland as a thank you to our friends watching the pooch back home. After a quick search on the trusty Yelp app, we drove over to the Midtown Global Market to scout out Grass Roots Gourmet assortment of aged dairy. Specializing in all things local, GRG has honey, syrup, cured meats, pickles, and mustards among other excellent looking delicacies. As I hovered over the case trying to make important cheese decisions, the friendly guy working the counter offered some help and samples. I ended up with a half pound of 4 year aged cheddar and a half pound of what was said to be a three time award winner for the best cheese in the US (I think it was the Prairie Breeze?) which was quite deserving of the accolades. Extra appreciation for the validated parking with purchase, and for the clerk providing the ice pack to keep my cheese cold on the flight home.

Cheese aficionados and local food lovers unite...Grassroots Gourmet has got'chu! Located within the Midtown Global Market, this quaint fromagerie sources all of its cheese from Minnesota and Wisconsin so you can feel good about supporting the local economy every time you indulge! Lucky for me, Vicki was working so I was able to get pairing recommendations and samples! (Note: While you're there, try the meade--promise me.) Her extensive cheese knowledge blew me away! Exhibit A: A woman came in looking for a cheese to serve with Asian cuisine she was making for a dinner party. While this inquiry may stump the average foodie, Vicki suggested a Tandoori cheese. I didn't even realize that existed. (I have so much to learn!) To sum it all up, I highly recommend bookmarking this place if you have any loving feelings towards cheese!

My favorite food is cheese. I enjoy almost any kind of cheese except Kraft singles and this really stanky cheese I bought in the Zurich airport during a layover in 2005. Grass Roots Gourmet sells GOOD cheese. It's all local to Minnesota and Wisconsin, which I love. We live in cheese country, after all... why buy French brie when ours is even creamier? I bought the makings of a fancy cheese plate to bring to a party here and found everything I needed. The guy helped me pick out a variety of things that would pair well with apples, plums, grapes (from the Produce Exchange) and this yummy garlic pepper jam from Grass Roots. He set me up with some samples and all of his recommendations were perfect. We had this rich brie, creamy Gorgonzola, tangy Monah (hard and sharp like Parmesan) and unique stinging nettle Gouda. The first three were excellent with fruit and the Gouda was a total stand alone. They have all kinds of flavored Gouda, and this one was a winner (nettle tastes like it has a touch of onion/garlic to it). I had avoided this place in the past because I thought the prices would be outrageous, but the prices were surprisingly low for the quality. You could easily spend the same amount on cheese at Trader Joe's, honestly. And even though the selection is small, it's not limited. Other than cheese, they have all sorts of local meats, jams, honey and things of that grocery nature. The deli meat is the only thing that isn't local (Boarshead). I usually go for the garlic pepper jam whenever I stop by. Tip: -They validate parking, just like the other businesses in the Midtown Global Market.

Cheeses galore. Love the fact that everything is local. Fresh, responsible, yummy choices. Lots of them. Super nice staff, who even willing to serve us before they were officially open. We came on a Sunday, and a handful of vendors were already open. Grass roots was due to open within the hour, but still setting up shop. We just couldn't wait (on our way to a target field tour) and they were more than happy to help us anyway. Nice. Besides the obvious offerings, after all, you can't miss all that cheese! There was also a variety of small batch bottled sodas that we had not seen before. Our group tried a few to go, and we were not disappointed. Definitely worth a trip to the Midtown Global Market if you are looking for something unique or planning a wine and cheese get together.

I've strolled by this stall many times in the market, but I didn't see anyone working there until just recently. I decided to stop by, and I'm so glad I did. I asked for a cheese that would pair well with a barbera d'alba wine that I had waiting for me at home. The lady suggested some semi-sharp cheeses and offered me sample after sample. Free cheese samples? Yes, please! I had no idea how good the local artisanal cheeses were! I might never buy imported again. I sampled a few of their jams and preserves and settled on a Dante (similar to Manchego) and a raspberry pepper jam to go with my wine and baguette. It all went together perfectly. I will definitely be returning.

I'm not a vegetarian but I loved the rice burger. Pretty good coffee, but the food is the selling point for me. Great atmosphere and always friendly staff.

Best cheese shop in the Twin Cities - bar none. Everythig (except some deli meats) must come from a 150 mile radius of Mpls... Who knew Minneaota had so many cheese artisans? The stunning variety is as good as it gets...and at lower prices the their more well known competatprs - L&B, H's or S's The Praire Breeze Farms (Iowa) makes my favorite cheddar in the world...Really. The many choices of locally produced Gruyere and goat and sheeps milk cheeses makes me wonder if all the Midwestern famers producing this kind of artisty have thick French accents? The only thing better than the cheese is the very accomplished palate and encyclopedic knowlege of the owner, Diane, and her staff. Ask her / one of them to pick a few for you. What texture? What animal milk? Sharp? Dry? Mold or milder flavor??? Honestly, I din't get his kind of "What you need to know--before you buy" counsel before my last surgery! My current favs are the Nettles (herbed), Several crumbly Gryeres and whatever they suggest. Snother big plus...they often offer 'groupon' kinda' deals, making it possible to get a huge variety of taste experience for little moolah! Did I mention the phenominal Ames Farms honey...and local-specialty jams? Don't make Grass Roots your only destination at Midtown Global Market.... A walk through will take you on an adventure, where you'll be sure to fi nd your next favorite QUALITY fast food, ice creams, gelatos, caviar, tarts, cupcakes, candies, truffles...on and on.
