Blarney, Blarney, Blarney... What can I say (/remember) of Blarney... Blarney is the typical college bar, and the bar that I always somehow end up at by 1:30 AM every weekend night. It's disgusting, yeah, but it's also fun when you're incredibly drunk. The much revered "Blarney shot" is a mix of crew de menthe, Baileys, and more gut-rotting liquors... But you should probably experience it at least once if you're a Minnesota student. Shots are expensive but rails and non craft beers are reasonable, even on weekends. Food... I'd pass on. I had the patty melt one time after a football game... Thought it was amazing. Then I had it sober and it wasn't. That's what alcohol will do to your taste, I guess. Although Mesa is still good sober. Go to Blarney on the weekend if you're a college student for the typical college experience. You only have four years to be this ridiculous... And it's always super fun talking for an hour about who knows what with people you hardly know and then seeing them in class the next day. One thing I'm PISSED about... they got rid of Sunday bottomless mimosas. There was seriously no better way to avoid Sunday homework than sitting on their patio and getting drunk off pitchers of cheap champagne and OJ. Bring 'em back, Blarnz! LONG LIVE BLARNEY! Kidding... kinda.

Since I am a college student I want to love Blarneys, but each time I go there, the only thing I am "in love" with is their cheap drinks. The main thing I do not like about it is how packed it gets on a Friday or Saturday night after about Midnight. I personally do not find pushing your way through a packed bar just use the bathroom as being fun. Even dancing kind of sticks because it is often so packed! As for people, on a Thur-Sat night, the crowd is mainly college students and is very cliquey. Full of obnoxious frat and sorority members thinking they is a big deal, but have no clue how hard reality will hit them once they graduate. Athletes beware, the place is full of jersey chasers! When I do go to Blarneys, it is for the nightlife. I have eaten at Blarneys a few times and the food has been fine, nothing to rave about.

When I order a Juicy Lucy, I expect there to be cheese in the middle... Just not so! The cut was made in the burger for the spot where the cheese was SUPPOSED to be, and it wasn't there. So basically I paid for a Juicy Lucy and all I got was a hamburger with a hole in the middle. Not cool!

Great atmosphere, friendly staff, awesome bloodys!

This may not be a fair assessment, because I'm actually reviewing this place like it's a normal establishment. In the end, this is a campus bar, and sooner or later drunk sorostitutes and douchey frat boys will make their way there. I went there to see a friend's band preform on a Friday night. The venue seemed nice, spacious and calm. The band was good, of course. Everything seemed normal and calm, like any nice laid-back pub. Then, like in Cinderella, the clock struck midnight, and the masses of insanely drunk college kids came in like someone was giving out free lobsters at a dorm's cafeteria. I know everyone says this, but seriously, I was not like THAT in college, and it's true. Some of the stuff I got to see, I could've lived without seeing again. I had seen enough of that years back. Not to mention witnessing a guy throwing up into his hands and throwing it on the floor. Just lovely, and something I could've lived without seeing. At least when normal people need to throw up at a bar, they find a trash can if they can't make it to the bathroom. Come on kids, it's not that hard! Like I said, this seemed like a decent place until those people came. And if at its worst, I can't imagine coming back again, I am likely not to go back. I'll stick to drunk people close to my age, who do stupid things I can more or less identify with.

We went here before a Gophers Game and had a Great Bloody Mary with a Corona Beer floating in it and some great food.

    (5)
  • Wanda M.

Bloody Mary is fantastic..so fantastic I cannot just drink one. PS the bar does not smell like pee, bleach or vomit. Nice place if your not into smelly.

I came here before a Gopher game for some breakfast and a few beers to warm up for the outdoor stadium. The corned beef hash was pretty good. It was a bit crowded but we ended up standing around a pub table right next to the server station. Our server was pretty bad. We had to wave him down several times to get him to stop at our table even though he walked right pass us every time he went to the register. I asked for Tabasco sauce and it never came. He apologized twice during the meal that he kept forgetting it but then he never brought it after the apologies. I also asked for water which came after another friendly reminder. Was this guy on drugs? Probably...damn kids and their drugs.

  • Amanda H.

We had never been but we went on St Patrick's and had the Reuben pizza and Reuben wontons. I don't know about their regular food but those were fantastic! Yum!

  • Nadine Y.

If you read my "about me" section, it says that my choice for a last meal would be mashed potatoes with any kind of protein. And thanks to that, Blarney's has a "Banger Mash" - Kielbasa sausage with mashed taters... heaven! Well, they've had it on the menu for ages, but you catch my drift. Oh, and the chicken wild-rice soup is also delish. Uh, but for some odd reason, the food never sits well in my tummy. Kielbasa sausage... darn you! Wait, or is that because of all the cheap beers and happy hour specials? Everything else is pretty standard. Expect to see a lot of college-aged servers there, so sometimes the service isn't always consistent or always the best.

    (3)
  • Melissa L.

I come here for happy hour occasionally. It's hard to say no to $3 pints of Guinness and Harp. It's also hard to say no to their nachos and waffle fries. Maybe that explains why I went up a pant size. The best time to come is during the wee hours of happy hour. As the evening turns, it gets pretty fratty.

    (3)
  • Jack L.

I sat at the bar and had a couple of beers. I've been here before and had food but nothing from the food to the service screams spectacular. I find them average. The bartenders were completely non-engaging. They didn't seem to be having fun so I didn't either. Even the layout isn't as "cozy" as a typical irish pub. It's kinda wide open... I guess college-style or something. Don't go out of your way to come here... but if you're in the area and like irish pubs, it's worth a pint.

  • Lorna H.

I've been to Blarney's several times during my college years. For a night out, for lunch, and for breakfast. To be truthful, the food is just right when you want nothing more than a usual burger or fatty, heart attack inducing cheese concoction. But other than that, there isn't much to be excited about. You'd get better "fayre" at one of the Irish pubs downtown. The live music is louder than a dance club on Saturday night. I had to scream across ten inches for my friend to barely hear what I was saying. Then there is the fact that this is a "bro bar" full to the brim of bros and their hoes. If I wanted to have such an experience, I'd go to one of the frat houses on University Ave. Then again, if that's your thing, have at it. I give this place one star instead of (barely) two because of a disturbing discovery. Some friends and I were there one Friday night. There was a two for one deal and I ordered Corona. The server brought our drinks in plastic cups and with one sip, I realized they had taken one bottle of Corona, spit it between the two cups and filled the rest with water... ...What the hell? If you have a 2 for 1 deal, then give me two beers for the price of one. Don't water down beers. You want to save money then don't offer deals you won't deliver on. How insulting. Who do you think you are? The only Irish thing about this bar is the Guinness and Harp. The rest is a frat fatale.

    (1)
  • James H.

The owner of the place is not very smart (guess you don't have to be when near a college campus). I was there with colleagues from the U (grad students and professors). The owner blasted the music at us and told us we weren't ordering enough and needed to leave or he was going to kick us out. Keep in mind this was at 4:30 and the place was empty. We were benefiting him financially. And we were clearly not out for a late night (meaning we weren't going to be there, taking up space, when things actually got busy). Also, the service is consistently horrible. Not a huge fan, but if you want to go out in Dinkytown, go to the Kitty Cat Club or the Library, both well run and the staff at those places are well-trained and efficient.

  • Glen S.

This is the only five star place I have ever awarded. If you're Irish (or even if you're only Irish on St. Patty's day) stop by. Not only does it have the best bartenders in the city, it also has the best daily specials. Yes, many people think of this as a college bar, but just look around any day of the week, and you'll see people from all over the city. They come to eat the wing, Rubens, and most of all, meet these bartenders. It's a must any Tue-Thurs night, if not only for the live music, but to enjoy one of the best atmospheres in the city limits. Happy hour helps you save, but the music helps you enjoy.

    (5)
  • Seijen T.

Blarney is always hit or miss. Blarney is all about the people you see there. The drink specials, imho, are average and the atmosphere so-so. Live music can be a blast. Thursdays is karaoke night and is definitely the most popular night of the week. 100% guaranteed you will see someone you know. However, this definitely turns into huge hords of girls jumping on stage to sing their rendition of Britney Spears. So if you're into that, then you should definitely go. Like I said before though, you go to Blarney because you know your friends (or at least my friends) will probably be there. Oh, and there is not really a whole lot of true "Irish" going on. Props to them for the whole Gopher Hockey scandal though.

  • Gregg M.

Some things never change...like the $2.50 Long Islands at Blarney's. College bar. College prices. College everything! After 10p this place is about as classy as a hot dish. Stick to having lunch here and you'll be safe.

We stopped on our bikes to have breakfast on Sunday. Breakfast is awful; oatmeal was a watery gruel. toast was cold with excess butter smeared on it. This was the worst breakfast I have every had. The waitress asked us how our food tasted and we told her it was awful and her response was "I'm sorry." That was it. There was a fruit entree on their limited menu, but it was unavailable because they had no fruit and the waitress said "we are not very healthy here."

  • Anna S.

Blarney's is fun if you're looking for a follow up to The Library after their cheap drinks end. They usually have good live bands and we usually end up doing a round of shots to keep our buzz going. Good for people watching or meeting fun new people. Bathrooms can be gross as there's usually a lot of puking going on in them.

    (4)
  • Emily S.

Oh man... I will never come here. Standing outside the Dinkytowner watching all the drunk college guys act all macho... is Way to much for me! It is quite the scene though! I love hearing their obnoxiously-shitty, Dave Mathew Rip off bands they have playing...ALL THE TIME! and.. Karaoke? Could this place get any worse? (i'm thinking not!)

    (1)
  • Sean H.

Absolutely horrible bar and restaurant. Food was expensive and not worth it and the door men were extremely rude. And don't eve think about using a fake i.d. because they're pricks about it. This is just a place to avoid. Try the library instead

  • Adam S.

I want to like this place, it has many qualities I love, however their food is terrible. Decent place to go for a beer prior to a Gopher game or if in the area, but I wouldnt recommend anything but an appetizer here. Their burgers are OK, but it's hard to screw up a burger. And Annies (or even 5 guys) has better burgers nearby

  • Brad T.

Blarney would probably prefer to be known as an Irish bar, but I list it as a Burger joint because that's what I've enjoyed there. Really enjoyed. Today marks my second visit, and it was a welcome distraction from half a dozen other lunch spots in Dinkytown. Not that I have anything against the other spots, but after eating Chinese for the fiftieth time, interspersed with tasty meat & potatoes from Steak Knife, good cheap Indian fare from Little Taj Mahal, and school food in Coffman Union, I sometimes crave another variety. Let me state right now that I am embarrassed by how often I eat out. My wife, a teacher, brings leftover rice and chicken in tupperware to her 28-minute break. Nobody has a right to eat as richly as we do in the US - in cost, I mean, not in the sense of a farmer's market - and these days will end soon for me as I return to school. Blarney's prices at are a bit steep for lunch, about $7.95 for a typical burger, but what a fine burger! High-grade beef done well with a tasty mix of spices and cheese on a fresh, unique bun. Not to rave about, I suppose, but I can't remember the last time I could still taste what was left of lunch an hour later and smile. The ambience is a la Kieran's or the Liffy - the Twin Cities has no shortage of Irish pubs - but with more vertical space and better lighting (like Brit's), and at lunch the place is empty. I suspect it's packed at 10 pm during the school year, being less than two blocks north of the U of MN East Bank, but I'm generally in bed by then. For a family guy, lunch can be the one private, care-free break between sunup and sundown. In a place like Blarney, with a fine burger and engaging novel, I all but forget my responsibilities. For those visiting after work, there is of course no shortage of import and domestic ale - but you can find that anywhere. It's the ambience and food that distinguishes this place. If only I could afford it daily.

Blarney Pub is about as Irish as Olive Garden is Italian. The food is pretty lousy and I don't recall them having much of selection of beers. It's been awhile though.

Bottom of the barrel. if you ever end up here on a weekend night you might as well shoot yourself in the face. When they have live music they turn it up so loud your ears bleed. way too crowded, wait in line for 10 minutes to get a drink and they guaranteed will mess up your order because 8 trillion other douchebags are waving their cards in the poor bartender's face and shouting. most likely you will run into a girl that you knew from your biology class three years ago, but she will ignore any attempts at eye-contact-recognition, until you finally say "hey - Jackie?" and she will try very hard to pretend that she remembers you, before her fat extremely drunk friend interrupts - but I mean come on, we had like twelve conversations Jackie? Nothing? You don't remember me at all? I'm not even trying to hit on you here, you're not even that attractive - I just thought it would be fun to reconnect, you know, talk about biology a little bit, maybe you could introduce me to your friends, maybe we could - oh never mind you are text messaging now - right in the middle of my sentence - oh now you are answering your phone in this extremely loud bar...now you are shouting into your phone "BLARNEY! NO!...BLARNEY, NO WE LEFT THE PARTY! CUZ IT WAS GAY! YEAH THE COPS CAME! WHAT? WHAT? NO THE COPS CAME! NO! WHAT? BLARNEY! NO WE'RE AT BLARNEY TESS - JUST COME HERE! NO COME HERE!

I try not to get annoyed when I come into this bar, but I can't help it. I will hand it to the bartenders-they are pretty nice. But the drinks and food are overpriced. Don't go on a karaoke night because the host of it is probably the most annoying human being to walk the face of the earth. Constantly shouting, and when you mix that with drunk students thinking they are the next Gloria Gaynor on the mic, it doesn't make for a good combo. The service is bad and slow and it's not rare for the servers to just... forget you. I had the unfortunate incident of dining with a few friends upstairs and we waited an hour for our breakfast, no joke.

    (2)
  • Peter H.

As someone before me said it's all about who you meet there. The place itself is nothing special, and is very hit or miss. Some nights I'll have a great time there, and others I'm disapointed. Karaoke night is alway a good time and part of the charm is the dirty roadie dude who runs it. Overall you never know what you are going to get until you get to Blarney's but luckily there are many other choices if it is a dud night.

Great crowd, great specials. Upstairs wasn't open - hopefully it will be next time.

Great place to have a quiet breakfast on a Saturday morning, because everyone else and their mom is across the street at Al's. The corned beef hash was okay. Extra star for the cute & friendly waitress who scribbled a smiley face on my receipt.

    (4)
  • T.S. M.

Having attended the U I have to rate this place as a student and as a normal member of society. It's a great place for students to hang out and meet up with friends and get some cheap drinks, but if your not a student stay clear because you wont be able to hear your friends talk, The experience is the same at the library. If you are in Dinkytown and you want to grab a drink without running into drunk college kids try the Kitty Cat Klub.

  • Andres H.

They don't call it "Blackout Blarnz" for nothing... Blarney is the place where everyone in Dinkytown ends up after drinking way too much with their friends. The atmosphere is quite lively due to the fact that half of the people there after 12 AM are close to blackout. My friends and I refer to it as "Blackout Blarney" because, well, that's why people go here. I suggest spending your time downstairs in the "taproom" on a weekend night. It is not quite as crowded and it will take you about half the time to get a drink as it would at the main bar. It's a fun atmosphere for a college student, but if you're looking for a classy establishment, I would not stop here.

Our soccer team went here after a Thursday night game. The place was pretty empty because it was during the U of M's spring break. Our experience started with the server spilling a tray full of waters on one of the girls in our group and it never improved from there. The food was so-so, the beer was overpriced, and the worst part of it all came when we got the bill. The server said we could only split the bill into 2 checks (among 9 people). Since we were a large group we tried to be accommodating and agreed to that. However, when we received the checks, rather than splitting the items among the people at the table, every item was split in half (i.e. my $5 dollar beer was represented as $2.50 on both checks, my $8.25 quesadilla was represented as $4.13 on both checks, etc.). Basically, the split checks were helpful to no one since we were trying to pay in pairs and individually (in my opinion, 4 checks among 9 people is not an unreasonable request considering how empty the place was). Anyway, we ended up asking the server to put the checks back together because it actually made it more difficult to account for everyone's portion. The hardest thing to swallow was the flat rate gratuity on the entire bill. The service absolutely sucked, but since we had gotten a couple of expensive pitchers the server ended up getting a $40 tip. Bottom line, unless you're a college student here for cheap drinks, this place is AWFUL. The saving grace was the good company I was with. We were all able to laugh at the experience.

I was pretty hesitant about going to Blarney's for an unofficial meeting, but they ended up having some big wooden tables that were great for a group our size. The chairs and sofas nearby also looked like a great place to gather. The place seemed more warm and welcoming than I expected. This place wouldn't make a good spot to study though because they don't have Wi-Fi. Shocker! Everybody has internet options these days. So why give them 2 stars? Because our meeting was about 2 hours long and half way through she gave us our bills and collected payment from maybe half of us. The rest of us had to hunt her down when the meeting was over an hour later so that we could pay. She never came back, and it wasn't like the place was busy! The opposite, it was pretty dead when she dropped off our checks. It got busy right as we were trying to leave because tonight is the night of the Vikings game at TCF Stadium. It might pay to go back on a night with specials, but otherwise I say to hike downtown to the real Irish pubs.

Meh. Eh. Okay. I've been here a few times during the day for beers and snacks. One thing that is consistent- adorable girls who are the worlds slowest servers. Painfully slow at times. I like attractive people as much as the next person but hate waiting unreasonably long for service. At no point should it take 25 minutes to get a beer because "the machine (computer) isn't working." Or 30+ minutes to get a bill even after being asked three times. The food is okay. I've tried a couple salads, a burger and their chicken strips. All acceptable, not exceptional in any way. They do have a nice selection of brews on tap- at least for my simple tastes. Overall, if you're in dinkytown, this is probably a pass unless you've got some serious time to commit.

  • Erin D.

Decent food, mediocre drinks; this place left a lot to be desired. Casual atmosphere. I went during the day, so maybe the night scene is better but I was not impressed. If you're looking for quick bar food, it will suffice, but beyond that, I would not recommend it.

    (2)
  • Justin S.

The fish and chips and cheezy fries are pretty good, especially for a bar setting. This is considered the "expensive" bar in Dinkytown, meaning that actual drinks and shots might be around $5-6 not on special. It's also the last stop for the "Dinkytown Loop" meaning that it doesn't get very busy until after midnight, and in a matter of 15-30 minutes goes from calm to chaotic. If you don't like large crowds, this is not the place to go after 12:30am. The specials are pretty good, with limited drinks around $3 on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Also, ladies drink for free between 11pm and midnight on Wednesdays. This, on a weekly basis, results in at least a two-to-one gal to guy ratio. However, I have yet to see it bring in much of a crowd. Also a fair warning, there is a $5 minimum on cards. Final note, try a Blarney shot sometime. It'll be worth a try.

Nothing like getting kicked out of a bar trying to save your friends from potential rapists because the plain clothes bouncer wouldn't accept a Wisconsin ID. This place is only good for black out hook ups, smh.

  • Sam L.

Blarns is the best. And Peyton is the best. Reuben poppers are seriously ridiculous. In an awesome way. Love the new carpet. Way to go.

    (5)
  • Annalee T.

Not only is this place disgusting, but when I was in college and WAS 21, the bouncer took my ID and denied my entrance saying that it wasn't me. It looked exactly like me but he claimed that "People come in here with their sister's IDs all the time." I had to call the police and have them come and make him give me my ID back. Better yet, he took my friend's ID too, whose WAS fake, and he later gave it back to her because she flirted with him. All class, Blarney.

Day drinking on game day has never been better. Seriously, this place has a fantastic front porch and drinks are dirt cheap. Don't come here expecting a fine dining experience, it's just not that kind of place. Do come with a big appetite and make sure you are thirsty!

I went here for a pre-Varsity dinner on a Sunday evening. I liked the comfy couches. They also had the windows open which was nice and provided a unique view and breeze which seems to be lacking at other Irish bars around the Twin Cities. The service was fair. (I think they might have been understaffed.) Their selection of cider is lacking (Strongbow and Angry Orchard are your choices). I had the fish and chips. The food was alright. The fries seemed a bit bland but they were still good. I couldn't eat my last piece of fish because I was so stuffed. I might return here for breakfast if I'm in the Dinkytown area. I wasn't here late at night so I can't vouch for the John Belushi-ness of U of M college students possibly getting out of control at this place.

    (3)
  • Dave H.

Not good. Rude staff, gross food. Smells of puke even in the day time. Not even an Irish bad in my humble opinion. Idk use be an okay place but the last time I was there u was very irritated with the staff. Remember you work in the service industry, if you can't deal with people get another job!!!

    (1)
  • Amy H.

Horrible service not forgiven by the horrible food. The beer was FLAT. The food took WAY too long to find it's way out and when it did, it was unedible by 2 out of 4 people in our family. Unacceptable.

This is a review of Blarney's Breakfast: Hungry Irishman's Breakfast: Irish sausage, rashers (thinly sliced ham), mashed potatoes topped with eggs over easy, and your choice of white or wheat toast. Mehhh. For $10 it was alright. The mashed potatoes were the highlight of the meal. The Irish "banger" was was too salty, I don't know where they get their meat but I was not a fan. I would recommend sticking with the basics, classic breakfast next time.
