This place was the nokomis grill and we were in the neighborhood and saw that it had changed! It's so fricken delicious!!! DO IT!

this place puts the word delicious in an entirely new category of its own! the food is outstanding, so many ingredients are freshly prepared. The owners are helping in th front and back of the restaurant, they are friendly and make sure your food is prepared as you wanted. I would like to suggest that rather than ordering at the front counter that guests are served by a waiter for reasons that I felt the worker at the front counter is overwhelmed with filling and cashiering orders while stocking the beverage counter, etc.

Good sugar fix, but not great. The location keeps it from being a swarm on weekends which is the main selling point.

Just not a fan. I had the Cuban Breakfast and it was a plate with white rice, black beans, 2 eggs of my choice and plantain. All the combinations that I would expect in this type of breakfast however, it was totally devoid of any spices/flavor that I would expect in "Cuban" cuisine. It was a spoon of plain white rice on the plate, then a spoon of plain black beans next to the plain white rice and then the two eggs. Nothing savory about the dish. Very disappointed. They served it with a small container of their salsa that really did not add much flavor. It is a wonderfully clean place with very friendly workers. Their bakery items look fantastic and if/when I go back I will for sure try out their bakery items. But, just not a fan...

We thought we were going to Nokomis Café, but were pleasantly surprised by this new café. I had a massive breakfast burrito that had a lot of flavor and was totally satisfying. My husband got the crepes and some toast. The crepes were delicious. Yummy cinnamon apple. I would like to see them expand on the crepe menu because they are nailing it. They also had some really enticing looking cakes, pies and such in the front case. I am still regretting not buying the piece of red velvet cake that was tempting me. We will definitely try this place again. The food was good and the experience was pleasant. The décor is nothing special, but it is fine for a breakfast joint.

My husband and I have not been to this location since it was "Just Like Ma's" - MANY years ago. We were in the area and thought we would check Berry Sweet Kitchen out. It was fabulous! My husband had the Cuban Sandwich and it was wonderful. I was a bit more adventurous and tried the Savory Waffle ( a bit more eclectic, but wonderful!). Everything is made in-house and so fresh! The staff made me feel special, and was very excited about the fact this was our first time at their restaurant. They do a wonderful job!!!

Four of us were at Berry Sweet Kitchen today. We ordered four different things (veggie omelet, eggs, hash browns and bacon, a Jucy Lucy and berry crepes). We were all extremely pleased and are excited to have a new favorite place. The bread and buns are "made from scratch" as are the fabulous desserts (we only tried three and you cannot go wrong!). As to a previous review, silverware and napkins were provided at each table. Excellent service, very neat and clean. Thank you Berry Sweet Kithchen!

We are a retired couple and have traveled all over the world for business and pleasure. Berry Sweet Kitchen rates in our top tier of favorite restaurants. Everything - from the bread to the strawberry jam to the fresh squeezed lemonade to the salad dressings - is hand made in house with farm to table fresh ingredients. Yesterday I had a savory waffle (quinoa and asparagus cooked in the waffle batter, served on top of field greens, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries with housemade berry vinigrette, topped with a sunny side up egg and chorizo sausage. Outstanding! The banana crepes are like bananas foster rolled up in the tenderest crepe you've ever had. With housemade whipped cream on top. Everything we have ever ordered here has been interesting, fresh, and expertly prepared. The very friendly owners are always there, cooking and serving guests. Yes, you do have to place your order at the counter and pour your own coffee. But then the owner comes over and brings you a free sample of something to taste. And then comes back and brings you a free container of strawberry jam to take home with the loaf of bread you bought. Is cleanliness important to you? Check out the bathroom. Sparkling clean. If your idea of trendy dining is overpriced sushi and martinis served by a waiter who acts like he's doing you a favor by waiting on you then Berry Sweet Kitchen is not for you. If your idea of trendy dining is reasonably priced fresh made menu items, served with a smile in a clean, cheery establishment where everybody knows your name, then this is the place for you. Well done Berry Sweet Kitchen owners! Just keep doing what you're doing.

I went here with my family this weekend - we received great, friendly service, big portions, and our girls loved topping off the meal with chocolate covered strawberries! I usually don't get corn pancakes, but I was in the mood for them. They didn't disappoint!

We just had breakfast this morning. It was very good. My husband had the breakfast burrito which was very good. My daughter had the banana crepes which were good as well. My sister had the banana french toast which was super good. The bread is all homemade so the slices were big and fluffy. My eggs were cooked perfectly. The service was excellent. The owner was very courteous and accommodating to our needs and our two young children. We will continue to stop here whenever we are in Minneapolis. We definitely recommend this place to others.

Stopped in for breakfast on Sunday. We usually order one sweet and one savory breakfast dish and split them. We had the bacon waffle and the banana peacan french toast with berries. Both were amazing, we loved the fresh fruit and the the whipped butter's texture and sweetness. Friendly staff, clean with a mom pop shop decor feel.

I recently moved into the neighborhood and wanted to try some of the local fare. As a breakfast cafe owner myself I understand some of the nuances of this business and will try to be more than fair in my review. That being said. I arrived on a Wednesday, late morning. Only a few customers in the place. I wasn't aware but it's the type of place that you place your order, pour your own coffee etc etc.... maybe I'm old school, but I certainly prefer to be waited on. And it gives the establishment a chance to connect with the customer. But that is a personal opinion. As for the food.....my wife ordered an apple crepe which she said was pretty good although the apples were pretty hard. I had a breakfast burrito which was a tad above average although it was only Luke warm. Not sure why. My professional opinion is that this place is trying to be something that this neighborhood will not support enough to make a go of it. It's a lower middle to middle class neighborhood and I think they need to make some changes to make it. I really hope they do because it would be nice to have a place to grab breakfast nearby. I will wait a month or so and see how things are going. I wish them the best. I am giving them 3 stars based on decent food and the fact that they are new

Easy parking. The owner greeted us when we entered and was very welcoming. All the food we had was great - banana french toast, breakfast burrito, egg sandwich, and a side of bacon. We will be back!

I will preface this by saying I've only been over to Berry Sweet once since it opened in the ashes of the Nokomis Cafe. I enjoyed it. It's hard to pigeonhole their menu because they have some American favorites jazzed up by Latin American influences. I got the Cuban breakfast special, which had rice, black beans, eggs and fried plantains, along with some delicious homemade bread and jam. The rice and black beans were an interesting alternative for a breakfast plate, and the eggs were cooked well enough...perhaps they were a little more solid than I usually see when ordering eggs 'overeasy', but I liked the texture. I was a little disappointed in the plantains, though, because I was hoping for more texture and these were just kinda slimy and mushy. The folks here are very enthusiastic and friendly, and I will definitely come back and give them another try. The menu intrigues me enough to return and I hope this place turns into a joint I'd like to go to regularly, because the Nokomis Cafe was pretty bad as I remember it. One other thing is they have a sort of system where you order at the counter and then they bring your food to you, which is fine. But if you forgot to grab a spoon or a fork, you end up then getting up from your seat and having to make trips over to the busy area with the soda fountain. I'm sure it'd be expensive to hire a waitress but the system they have going on could use some work.

Stopped in this morning. Had been at the old Nokomis Cafe years ago and it was so dingy and smoke filled that I never went back. New owners, new menu. Place was very clean, pleasant, quiet even with others in there, and the staff was friendly. Had the Biscuits and sausage gravy. Large portion. Biscuits obviously home-made, as is all their bread. Saw others taking out whole loaves of bread. I enjoyed the meal and will go back.

Perfect local place for a great breakfast. Portions are huge, prices are low. I had the best pancake there of any breakfast nook I've ever been. Many of the other reviews have noted it is self serve (order at the counter). However after that I never had to get up to refill my coffee. Servers were promptly there to keep my coffee warms. We will be regulars.

If you like more food than you can reasonably eat in one sitting for a fair price, then this is the breakfast place for you. When you walk in, you'll be greeted by someone who will explain that this is a fast casual joint: order and pay at the counter, take a number, and your food will appear in front of your face fifteen or so minutes later. I had the crepes with a side order of bacon and sausage, because I'm a fiend. All of it was delicious, though I took over half of it home because I'm a fiend that can't eat that much that early in the morning (you know, before noon). My friend had the breakfast burrito, which looked amazing but was ridiculously large. She seemed pretty happy with it. The menu for breakfast and lunch seemed pretty extensive, and if the amount of food you're given is the same for all the options on the menu, you probably won't need to worry about your next couple of meals after eating here.

TL;DR: Hidden Gem. Do yourself a favor and get the banana French toast. IT. IS. SPECTACULAR. The Mexican omelet is also fantastic, plus unlimited Caribou coffee! Been meaning to try this for a while. Upon entering we were pretty skeptical. The decor is very outdated and you need to order at the counter. I usually don't like those set ups, but maybe that's not an issue for you. Anyhoo, the owner introduced himself and said we ordered the two best items on the menu - off to a good start. Sipped on some coffee for a bit then the food came out pretty quickly. Oh man. The french toast tastes like giant cinnamon rolls. I was so taken back. The syrup was more like melted caramel and butter and it was to die for. On top of that, the bananas are fried! Awesome! It was such a treat to find a breakfast place where a typical item like French toast is truly unique to that location. Because let's be honest, waffles, pancakes, french toast, etc., tend to taste the same for the most part across restaurants. Not here though! Oh, and the omelet was really good as well! If we hadn't gotten the French toast, i'd probably be ranting about it, but it just got overshadowed! Oops! It had a really great flavor from the chorizo and what seemed to be a homemade salsa. It made for an awesome savory compliment to the sweet French toast!

This is a great little neighborhood find. A basic service setup where you order your food and pay at the counter and they bring it out to your table. All the food is made from scratch (including the bacon!). The salads are amazing. I'm not exaggerating. Everything else I've had has been very good and to top it off they make possibly the best cheese cake in town.

We had a hankering for pancakes, and having already tried all other options in South Minneapolis, decided to visit Berry Sweet Kitchen. There was off street parking, no wait, incredibly friendly staff, fast service and, best of all, delicious breakfast fare. They make all their breads, and their chorizo, in house and it is all amazing. Our favorites were the French toast and the egg sandwich. This place is very kid-friendly without any of the stress of other breakfast places that have long waits and rushed service. You could linger here and fill up on self-serve coffee and actually have an in depth conversation. It's far from fancy, but that is part of its charm. We will be back and hope others will visit this local gem!

Sunday morning rolls around, we're up early. My initial thought was to hit up the Mill, but, they didn't open for another hour, so the woman points this one out to me on my bookmarks and says "This." I'm not that dumb to argue with her, so off we go! Place is tucked away and in the midst of a residential/mixed commercial area, but does sport it's own private lot, so bonus points there for street and lot parking. Ordering style, menu is above the counter, grab a menu as well, order up at the counter, get a number, pop a squat and wait. Beverages are self serve. Coffee selection, Caribou. Which, while it's not the "hippest" out there, still made me really happy. Now because I was scared off of having chocolate chip cakes after my trip to Louisiana Cafe a month or so ago, I decided no to that. However, my girlfriend was craving banana and chocolate chips, so she went with it. Know what that means, this guy is still getting pancakes! I roll with the banana french toast, and we get a side of scrambled eggs with cheese and bacon - just for good measure. While we wait, I have a great chat with one of the workers on how everything is made here. Bacon is even cured on site, breads are made daily and everything is scratch made. Love getting a chance to get this info from the staff. Brief wait concludes with the food arriving, and it's looking great. I'll start with the French toast, because I can. Easily some of the best french toast I've ever had. Cooked to absolute perfection with the edges being crisp and the middle having a bit of chew - but not being soggy. Spot on job here. The caramelized bananas to go with it, and berries provided incredible flavors from the sweet banana to the tarty berries. And, to make it even better, the walnuts gave you a bit of extra crunch chew and some saltiness. Just a fantastic dish that made me actually not regret cheating on pancakes. No syrup was used, the caramel and caramelized bananas were more than enough sweetness. Bacon. Mmmm, bacon. This was some damn good pig. Cut just thick enough to satisfy, done not to a burnt crisp but a crisp chew, and plenty of incredible salty smoke flavor to it. Good thing only two strips came. I'd hate to have to death match my girlfriend for the 3rd piece (I'm a romantic and gentleman up until it comes to bacon, then love hits the back seat). Toast was very good, and the house made berry spread was fantastic. Good thickness to the toast, toasted perfectly to still have a great bit of fluff on the inside without being over done to scratch the roof of your mouth to hell. Eggs, good. But missing cheese (reason why 4 stars instead of 5). Could have given the eggs back to get it melted on, but, too hungry and not the biggest of deals. The pancake. Ashley, as we know, is a peanut butter junky so she decided to spread peanut butter all over the chocolate-banana cake. So, lets recap this flavor blast... chocolate, bananas, peanut butter, vanilla based buttermilk batter for the cakes, and oh yeah - maple syrup. Her saying it was one of the best she ever had was reason enough for me to steal some bites before she gave me half when she was full (these things are pretty damn big). The salty peanut butter on there really helped tame the overly sugary flavor I was concerned with, and experienced at Louisiana Cafe. Due to the dressing up of the cake before I got a chance to sample, I won't include it in my "best of" list. Shame, but, wasn't technically my dish to begin with. All in all, a great place. Local, scratch made, great flavor, and minus one blip, easily one of the better places to get some breakfast.

I love this place. It's owner operated, quiant, and the food is yummy. The husband runs the front of the house, and while service can be a little slow, you can see why since he's running the register and taking care of all the customers needs, and he's really nice and likes to chat. His wife is the chef and baker. And, boy, can she bake. I had her do a cake for a retirement party. It looked like a pocket watch, and the details were amazing. Better yet, it tasted great( it was raspberry and chocolate marble). I suggest you like their Facebook page to see all the things she can do. They just started serving supper here, and I can't wait to try it. The daily breakfast special is always something unique, and I feel adventurous whenever I order it. For lunch, the berry sweet salad with salmon is always a winner. The warm salmon with the berries is so tasty, and the warm slice of buttery, garlic bread it comes with is awesome. Also, the portions are very generous.

Wolf in sheep's clothing. There are subtle hints around this place that it packs a much bigger punch than one would expect in its humble surroundings- home made smoked thick sliced bacon, perfectly fried plantains, caramelized bananas on delightfully thick French toast- Jon and Nancy know what they are doing! The above mentioned were quite delicious were well worth it! Also, echoing other reviewers, the customer service is really outstanding- they treat everyone awesome. I even saw the staff double checking a to go order to make sure nothing was forgotten. And it's great that there isn't a wait compared to some other over-hyped venues. Improvements could be made on pricing, silverware, and I have to admit their regular pancakes were plain next to the French toast. Overall definitely worth stopping in to support this new local business for a classic American restaurant that offers world class food options.

This place is the real deal for breakfast! Homemade breads, oversized omelettes, and hard to beat pancakes made for a great brunch experience. Not too far from the Mall of America, so for those guys getting dragged there, start your day right with a hearty breakfast at this place!

Great breakfast spot. We had a few hours to spend before catching our flight so we decided to get some breakfast. By the luck of the draw, we drove up on this restaurant. Our group ordered the Banana Pecan French Toast, Biscuits and Gravy, and the egg sandwich. All three were amazing, this restraunt uses fresh ingredients and almost all items are made from scratch. If you ever find yourself near MSP Airport with a few hours to spend, I recommend eating at Berry's Sweet Kitchen and taking a walk to Minnehaha Falls. You will not regret it!

Funny, the thing I was really impressed with was the ice chips at the soda fountain. I started with the most delicious tomato basil soup. It was just above the salty side. I also had a Mexican omelet. I would like more stuff on top and definitely more cheese in the middle, you could barely see it. I knew it when it was Just Like Ma's. Home cooking that I still miss. Others have come and gone here. I have high hopes for this place, though. They are very meticulous about the food and the appearance of the restaurant. They haven't worked out the kinks on the heat yet, especially the ladies, brrr. Mens not too bad. This place will get me back over this way again.

In living a block away from the Berry Sweet kitchen, I hadn't considered it as a dining option. A hole-in-the-wall establishment located across from the property devaluing centers of the neighborhood: a dilapidated U-haul rental shack, and a condemned service station (Mayor Hodges please pull eminent domain on those eye sores). So it was easy to drive by the BSK. Then during a Nokomis neighborhood festival a couple of years ago, a tall very Norwegian-looking man was serving Crepes. Being a crepe lover I tried one. It was fantastic! The man's name was John and he introduced himself as the new owner of the BSK. He said he and his wife always wanted to run a neighborhood restaurant that serves really good food... so they opened up the BSK. He had a real passion when he spoke about his restaurant. Later that week I ventured into the establishment with my wife. She ordered the Mexican Omelette, I ordered the berry crepes. The crepes were the perfect texture, full of flavor with homemade whipped cream and fresh berries. They also care about presentation placing the berries in an artistic design. Now let's talk about this Mexican Omelette. The Restaurant's name is "Berry Sweet Kitchen". The name does not inspire the thought of amazing Mexican food. As it turns out, John's wife is from Mexico. My wife's Omelette arrived at our table with homemade salsa on top and the sour cream was in a wave pattern across the top. It is clear they take pride on the presentation. The omelette was the best Mexican Omelette I have ever tasted! The flavors came together in a perfect balance. The chorizo sausage was flavorful but not overpowering. The eggs were light and fluffy. The cheese was perfectly melted and the salsa - wow! Amazing! John stopped by our table and took time to talk to us and explained the salsa was his wife's recipe. I am now a regular at the BSK. I have had the huevos rancheros, pancakes, cuban breakfast, pancakes, french toast and their Juicy Lucy, as well as their egg sandwich a la "Manny style". (Manny is one of the employees who suggested I try the egg sandwich his way with peppers and onions). The BSK never fails to impress me with the quality and flavor of their food for a very reasonable price. This food could easily be served at some of the finest restaurants in the cities for a lot more money. The owners of the restaurant treat everyone like special guests and enjoy getting to know their customers. The quality/price value of BSK is 5-stars. I haven't been able to find better food for the money in the Twin cities. The ambience is the only downside. John and his wife plan to renovate the place. Still the BSK is great neighborhood family-run place with unexpectedly amazing food, with attention to presentation, and of course friendly staff and owners.

Excellent choice for breakfast. Everyone loved their breakfast. The portions were generous. Fresh fruit made the banana French bread. We would definitely go back. The only down side was ordering, you have to look at the menu and order before you sit down, not the end of the world.

Great food, friendly service, and the best dang cakes and tarts in the city! We live very close and usually come for breakfast. I love the egg sandwich, served on toasted roll it's enough to feed two people! The chorizo really gives it that something extra. Also tried the caramelized banana French toast, salmon omelet, biscuits and gravy. never been disappointed. The best part is the delicious pastry case greeting you when you enter, the most delicious home made mini cakes, pies, tarts, all sorts of delights. SO GOOD! Another plus is you can order food to go! They do get a little busy during prime weekend breakfast hours, so it's a nice option to call ahead and pick your good up. Also, the service is really wonderful. It's a order at the counter system, which I don't mind, and if they're not busy sometimes they'll bring out toast with whipped butter and homemade jam for you while you wait. Tastes totally sinful! Love this place.

Have been to this restaurant several times since we moved into the neighborhood a few months ago. I absolutely love this place. I have tried several different things on the menu and they all taste home cooked and are delicious. My favorite is the Huevos Rancheros - best I have ever had. The owners run they place and they really know how to take care of their customers.

The food at Berry Sweet is outstanding! I've had several dishes now (egg sandwich, biscuits and gravy, eggs and toast, pecan roll) and all of them tasted amazing. Everything I've had has been really fresh, obviously from scratch, and well crafted. I've been pleasantly surprised by each dish! I highly recommend their food! The decor and layout isn't quite there yet... decor is that of a worn mom and pop shop and the layout is a bit confused with traffic jams being created by the register, a coffee stand where you need to do light battle to reach if they're busy, and a plate return station that sits awkwardly out in the open, but hopefully those will all correct with time and experience. None of these caveats should stand in the way of ordering some really great grub! So happy they are in the neighborhood!

this is a great little neighborhood gem. The food is great, the staff is friendly, and they obviously care about what they do. It's a great mix of unpretentious diner food and really well crafted desserts and other items. They also supply the beer-a-misu for Town Hall Lanes.

I visited Berry Sweet Kitchen last week (and have been there a few times prior). Here's my take on this place ~ The bread and French toast are amazing! High quality food. Everything seems to be bursting with flavor, and even the presentation of the dishes shows the attention they pay to their food and their customers. The way they treat their customers = excellent! You walk away feeling special. The owners/cooks and the server were so friendly. I love Berry Sweet Kitchen! I wish more places were like this, but I guess I may need to forgo those other places since they can't seem to get it right :D
