Mesa and Luce may have their craziness, California Pizza Kitchen its trendiness, and Punch its margherita, but when I am craving pizza I go to Slice of New York where the pizza is cheap, simple and delicious. This little pizza place has a great selection of pizza by the slice, Stromboli, and calzones waiting to be warmed up at a moments notice. For those wanting more and have the time (or a phone) they can also make whole pizzas and gyros to order. One warning for the uninitiated: if you go here outside of peak times (lunch, dinner, bar close) you are taking a gamble on the freshness of the pizza by the slice; at those times it's best to stick to the basics (pepperoni, sausage, cheese, and Hawaiian). Overall a great place, great prices and super quick regardless if you walk in or order over the phone.

Delicious. Reasonable. Fast. Nice folks. Good selection. You can see what you are ordering or you can have custom made. Wish they had fountain soda but not a big deal. Yummy and worth the stop.

I tried the Stromboli! and feta pizza. Wow. Good service and price too. Open to 3 am. When you want really good food, go here. The name is perfect and fitting since its spot on New York style. I wish they could put some artichoke on a pizza but I cannot complain the quality is high and everyone smiles when serving.

Stopped in after a trip to the art museum for an early dinner. The inside is decorated with a lot of New York memorabilia and there were plenty of food and drink options. I got a cheese slice, a stromboli, a cookie (packaged), and a can of soda for under $12. The slice was okay but the stromboli was amazing. Great early dinner for a great price.

Perfect late night pizza choice! My favorite is a classic slice of cheese. Don't let the small corner store fool you, it's got big flavors and friendly staff!

They are very friendly here. I ordered à basil, feta and tomato slice for myself. Kinda strange the pizza sits out then they put back in pizza oven. The pizza wasnt even really hot temperature wise. It was good but I have had better. I also ordered à takeout cheese slice for my son to eat later. The breadsticks/ garlic rolls were à bargain at 99 cents or four for $2.99. This came with marinara sauce. Parking is à pain on Nicollet. They have parking in back it says. Pizza slice was $2.75 cheese and $3.75 specialty. Might be back another time. Did not like the hard crust.

Best NY style pizza for my wife and I since we left NYC....and mind you, we grew up in Queens and she worked in a pizzaria. Worth our 30 minute drive past a hundred papa murphys, chanticlear, dominos, pizza ranch, papa johns...

I'm from NYC, and let me say this pizza place lives up to its name! Hands-down the best by-the-slice pizza in Minneapolis that I've found, AND it's open late (3am on Friday/Saturday?? Yea please). Great small neighborhood joint, nice staff too. Wish the pizza was a tad cheaper, but you can't have it all.

Well I've now had the opportunity to try thier pizza hot and fresh and like it alot! It's very unique pizza and it's cheap! They also have incredible baklava and they're only $2 a piece! I know many places charge 4 - 5 dollars for baklava that isn't nearly as good!

I am from New York so I write this review wanting this place to be good and a bit worried about the Goodfella/Godfather/etc references on the wall, but I gotta be me. The pizza is not great. But I haven't found greatness in MPLS either. But it could use more sauce, more toppings, a better crust. They are open till 3AM, so maybe that is where they do most of their business. The owner is a New Yorker, and I loved the nostalgic photos on the wall, the artifacts, but the pizza and other food needs a bit of a boost. They have HD TV for games.

I ventured down Nicollet Ave after reading a few reviews to A Slice of New York. Being a native of Chicago, I had my own bias on what good pizza should taste like. I've enjoyed all types of pizza in my travels. I ordered by phone a cheese pie and two garlic rolls. The guy taking my order was fast and efficient and told me it would be 15-20 minutes. Perfect! The joint is easy to find and there is a small parking lot behind the building. Inside there are a few tables and a guy was eating by the window, but this seems more of a take out place. They have premade a bunch of slices, calzones, stromboli, etc, so it seems like a good place to get a quick slice. I picked up my pizza and headed home with the delicious smell of fresh za permeating out of the box into my car. The pizza was nice and hot, the right amount of tasty cheese. I'm a big fan of a good crust, and this crust was nice and chewy and not too doughy. The sauce had slight seasoning and a little sweetness. The garlic rolls I ordered were good, but weren't heated up so I had to do that at home. The value at $12.90 definitely was a good deal (12" pizza and 2 rolls), and is a nice change from the normal take out. I would've given it 5 stars if all my food was hot, but you should definitely check this place out if you're looking for a good New York style pie!

Good Pizza. A Slice of New York has a big brick oven, their standard sauce is a marinara that will conjure up that east coast taste, they use real ingredients, and work off a nice gluey dough that stretches thin and folds easily. I like this place because its a needed balance of good pizza but for when I dont want to push my pizza all the way to foodie decadence. Its definitely a Neapolitan dough, but they dont do it in that super delicate, salty, chewy that you'll get up at Nea or Punch, which also means, unlike Nea or Punch, NY Slice's pie is designed for more than an appetizer-portion of ingredients! This is the great balance, its a real pizza dough but not so delicate it cant hold a real portion of toppings. You'll definitely notice the difference from that classic american thick dough you'll find at Leaning Tower or Papa John's, which is full of vegetable oil and shortening and is all bready and puffed up to hold two inches of cheese and pepperoni (that college pie). Im really surprised there are people on here giving this place 1- and 2-stars, this is absolutely 4-star pizza. Its not fancy foodie 5-star, but its for sure an undeniable step above above the thick heavy greasy pizza in this price point. This is just good flavorful pizza that will fill you up but wont weigh you down! Also, whats with knocking on the delivery? I don't know how dated those experiences are, but Im pretty sure New York Slice only uses BiteSquad, so go put those 1-star reviews over there, leave the Slice out of it. I've done carry out here a bunch of times, its always ready to be picked up 20 minutes after I put down my phone.

I was looking for a place that had good gyros and this place was it!! Haven't really tried anything else but if looking for a good gyro, try this place !!!!!

I was in the area and hungry for pizza, but didn't really want restaurant chain pizza. I remembered this place and even though it was out of the way, decided to give it a try. It is a smaller place, but I was just stopping in for a couple slices of take-out (they do sell it by the slice). I don't really like hot (spicy) food, but decided to try the buffalo chicken pizza. It was DELICIOUS!!!! By the end of the slice I was feeling a little heat, but it was pretty mild as far as buffalo chicken goes. I'll be back for more! The slices are about twice as big as you'd get at Pizza Hut or dominoes. I got 2 large slices, a large piece of garlic bread with sauce and a bottle of Coke for $9.

I didn't really feel this spot. I had a long day on the bike and just wanted something greasy to help fill the hole in my stomach around dinner time. Walking in, the pizza looked appetizing enough, and they had some calzones and stromboli that looked a-okay as well. I had a slice of cheese and a slice of veggie. I had them prepared well-done and they were both nice and crispy. The problem is that they were both extremely bland. Nothin doin. I ended up having to douse my meal in hot sauce and garlic salt. Even then, there still wasn't much flavor.

Had this pizza at a friend's house. She gave me some of the coupons, so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered a medium pizza off their menu, with a $2 off coupon. When it arrived, I was charged $7 over the regular price, no $2 off at all. I asked about it and the delivery man just said "Oh, it's tax." No, it was not just tax. $9 tax for a medium pizza? I still gave the delivery man a tip because it's not his fault, but HOLY CRAP this place is shady as hell. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. This place does not honor their coupons. Overcharges whenever they can. DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. Also--as a former New Yorker, calling this "New York" pizza is laughable. If you're looking for NYC pizza, this is NOT it. Literally, wish I had ordered Domino's instead.

Ordered delivery last night. It took 1 hr and 20mins for our order of a calzone and Stromboli to arrive to my apt. They both were ok but not the greatest calzone and Stromboli I have ever tasted but I use to live in NJ (hard to find a good ones in the Midwest). Plus we didn't not get any dipping sauce for our order! I don't see myself ordering from here in the future.

Ah, forget about it!!! Just kidding... Actually, A Slice of New York is pretty memorable... decent pizza, good salads, and fun Greek food, sides, and desserts. I've eaten here twice so far... gyro pizza first, and the Bronx pizza more recently (along with Greek salad and Baklava). While they don't make the best food on the planet, it is definitely satisfying enough if you're craving pizza, and prices are comparable to other local pizza places. They are for sure better than any chain restaurants.

My favorite place for lunch. Grab a slice and a breadstick...mmmmm breadstick. In a rush? In and out 15 min. Not tempted yet? How about steak and cheese hoagie with hot peppers dipped in au jus, nice and wet. Oh yeah, the hoagie is fresh baked. In not kidding. Yum. A slice of New York is my crave center easily once a week. DON'T let the store front fool you! This is a jem just north of eat street . While you eat enjoy the New York art and photos on every wall with espn, cnn, or soccor game on the big screen. Down side? Don't bring a large group and expect seating inside, limited tables as in 6. Don't worry though because folks eat and go. Second downside is no beer but who can drink on the job? Parking can be tricky but I almost always find a spot in back or phantom park at McDonald's across the street if no street parking available. A Slice Of New York ,You won't regret stopping by for a slice, I guarantee it. Maybe I'll set ya there.

One of my favorite spots to get a quick slice or two of reasonably priced pizza. Their other menu items are delicious; I particularly like their beef calzones and chicken rolls as well as their baklava. May not be the best pizza, but still pretty damn good. I've been here quite a few times and will probably be back many more. They have a good variety and you won't typically find yourself waiting for too long to get your food.

  • Kari W.

I work nights, ordered at 1:10am on a Friday, had to over order to make the minimum delivery. The gyro was fine. The baklava tasted a bit like a refrigerator, Cesar salad I'll eat for brunch in about 12 hours. Delivery was supposed to take 45 min and it was here in 20 or less, great considering they're only 1/2 mi. away. I'll give them another try.

Umm, there is nothing NYC about this food. As a former New Yorker I was super disappointed. Food was super bland.

  • John C.

I don't have anything legitimately bad to say about this place, and nothing great. I feel little for this pizzeria either way, I don't know why. I should say more, but I don't have anything to say; they have New York mafia movie posters on the wall. Pizza places like are a dying breed. If it doesn't have a wood fire oven and really thin pizza, or bruschetta and wine, or wood booths and indirect lighting, or microbrew on tap and organic sausage, or a tiki lounge and a juke box, then it don't get built no more. Not that I care either way, I like all those things.

  • S W.

Homesick? Relocated from NYC? Enough like home that I ate it folded. No nonsense in and out joint, it really replicates the slice experience well enough to earn the name.

I have lived in Minneapolis for the past 6 years and have, foolishly, thrown my money away at the half dozen or so obvious places that sell, purportedly, good pizza in the Twin Cities. And while there are things to be said about the uniqueness of the choices at Pizza Luce (mmm...baked potato!), the thin crust of the bougey Punch Pizza, and the thick cheese blanket and spicy, spicy sauce of Red's Savoy, none of them are the greasy, foldable, chewy thin crusts of my adolescence and young adulthood spent in New Jersey. A working-class-raised girl, I like a working man's pizza and the pies of the tri-state region of NY, NJ, and PA are where it's at. Go into Connecticut and it's lost, same if you go south of Philly and into Delaware. Forget it. That all being said then, imagine my surprise when, after 6 years in Minneapolis, I finally tried pizza from A Slice of New York tonight and was so blissed out halfway through the first bite that I called the restaurant and sang them my praises as grease ran down my chin. Like a real East Coast bitch, I had balked at this place for 2,190 days or so only to be taken completely by surprise. This is 97% the pizza I beg my family to order for dinner my first night back when I fly into Newark. The crust is thin, the edge (I ordered it "well done) was gold brown with the perfect chew. The cheese and pepperoni offered the orange grease I appreciate only on pizza of this kind, staining my paper plate in a way that was so nostalgic, I held it up to my boyfriend with near tears in my eyes, whispering, "Just look..." If you are from the East Coast, do not be dissuaded by this mediocre rating on Yelp; something else that kept me from trying it. I truly believe the folks rating it down are just used to the pizza of the Midwest, which isn't horrible, but is another animal entirely than what NY/NJ/PA folks are used to. If you are one of the latter, welcome to the Midwest, paisan. When you get your first pizza pangs from home, order or pick-up from here and thank me later. Trust me, this is where it's at. I've done the work for you.

Great if you are looking for NY style pizza. I think the person who does not like the pizza here must like the midwestern style (there is a difference). But if you like the greasy, ample melted cheese, triangle cut (not square!), and oregano in the sauce, NY style - then this is the place for you. the service staff are not amazing at their jobs (lol), but they are good people.

Oh my, I think I just found a new favorite spot in my new neighborhood! I am very giddy moving to the Whittier area because of its proximity to Eat Street greats like Quang's, Shuang Hur, and Jasmine 26. And, unashamedly, McDonald's. That was my original destination when I headed out for a late night dinner; I want them Big Macs. But, the Mickey D's closes at 11 PM, and I was about to walk home defeated and disappointed, I saw a hopeful "Open" sign lit up across the street to this joint, A Slice of New York. The exterior truthfully reminded me of that skeezy pizza joint next to Sneaky Pete's downtown. But, I decided to give it a try because if there's one thing I've learned as a foodie, it's never to judge a book by its cover. Oh, and tip well. The interior felt like New York City threw up all over the place: 10 or so framed photos of different The Godfather scenes, a Statue of Liberty replica, an inaccurately placed portrait of The Sopranos (Um, pretty sure that's New Jersey), and all that jazz. There's a couple of tables, and a line-up of cold-looking pizzas, calzones, and other meat-filled pies. Uh oh, I thought as I cautiously approached the guy behind the counter. I decided to go for the appetizing-sounding stromboli filled with 3-4 different types of meats. Immediately, the very friendly guy takes a stromboli, halves it and heats it up in a huge oven. Took about 4 minutes to heat the thing up; meanwhile I got to chatting with the restaurant employee. He was very nice and talked highly of this place. But the proof is in the pie, and I'm so happy with this serendipitous detour, because the stromboli was fantastic. It's so ridiculously flavorful and cheesy, stuffed with ground beef, gyro beef, Italian sausage, and more. The sauce they serve on the side could use some heating up, but the huge stromboli itself was well worth the $5.59 + tax. Their garlic bread was decent, but the boli was good enough that I decided to give the place a second try a few days later (well, not so much "try" as "I'm still living out of boxes and don't have time to cook"). This time I went for the chicken stromboli, which is about $0.40 more than the beef one; it's longer with a sesame-seed coated dough, and it's just as good-tasting as the beef one. I'm not a big fan of the cannoli because they pull it out of the walk-in refrigerator, and you can taste the staleness unfortunately. I'm guessing, though, that the dessert was just one miss in an otherwise underrated and unassuming li'l joint that I'll definitely be coming back to.

Even if this place wasn't in my neighborhood it would still be my number one choice for a slice (or two or three). It's the most authentic NY-style pizza I've had outside of Manhattan. Definitely in need of folding to eat properly, and I don't exactly have dainty little girl hands. The decor makes my husband feel like he's in an ep of The Sopranos & he can talk about football (i.e. soccer) with the employees, and the occasional customer, while waiting for our food.

Such a great local spot! Delicious pizza, pasta, calzones, and stromboli. The guy who owns the place is always friendly and coming up with new pizza topping combinations. Plus, the place is CHEAP! One note of caution, shy away from the wings, you might not even see them listed on the main menu inside, there is a reason.

    (5)
  • Bryan K.

I ordered one Stromboli. Then I thought to myself, "That isn't going to be enough," so I ordered a second. I have eaten half of the first Stromboli. Now I can't move. Someone find me a wheelbarrow!

  • Alex Y.

The prices are good, the hours are good -- especially for late night snacks. The food is OK. The calzones are a bit on the bland side and the chicken rolls are severely oily. The baklava is also overly sweet. Of course, this judgement is a bit irrelevant because this place is not the go-to joint for top-notch food. As a whole, I would go to this place for a quick food fix as opposed to a gourmet meal. Worth it if you go in with that mindset!

Really great pizza within walking distance? New York style??? I found the filler for the hole in my life that the loss of Golooneys left.

  • Lindsey D.

The New York theme inside is overdone, tacky and cluttered. The staff is always nice. The Pizza is really good, but the slices sit too long. It's just not busy enough to get a fresh slice usually. It's been cold for too long. We usually get a whole pizza because the it really is good here, just gotta get a fresh one.

I've lived down the block from this place for three years, and eaten there once in that time. That's not necessarily an insult, I just don't eat pizza and these guys aren't very good about getting their menus out there. The one time I did eat there only two thoughts stuck out in my memory. 1. Yes, it does look like a NY pizzeria. 2. I observed so little business (this time, and the many times I've passed it) that I assumed it was a front for a far more lucrative business. The other day, in need of a quick meal and steering clear of the McDeath across the street, I ducked in and grabbed a stromboli. It was reasonable, and I even saw a few other people trickle in. So I figured I'd give them a real try. Today, I ordered two pizzas for delivery. 1. It took the guy on the phone 2 minutes to find a pen to write down my order. This doesn't seem to argue against my "front theory". 2. It took 45 minutes to get my pizzas delivered less than half a mile. 3. Only 2 out of 3 toppings on one of the pizzas was correct. 4. Not to nitpick, but not the most authentic NY style pizza I've had. Close, but if I can't fold it . . .strike that . . . if I CAN eat it WITHOUT folding it, it's not NY style pizza. Them's the rules. 5. All this for $35. This puts you below Pizza Luce and Galactic Pizza in my book, and only ahead of Leaning Tower and their damned celery pizzas (seriously, can someone tell me why they put celery on all their damn pizzas??).

It has been a couple years since I have been to NY, but in those years I have searched the TC high and low for what I would call the most authentic NY style pizza....pretty sure this is it! At least it's as close as I remember...now if only I could get my hands on a Sabretts hot dog and some mystery relish!...but I digress. Small little hole in the wall, across from McD's on Nicollet that I had driven by for years but today I finally stopped and bought a large cheese pizza ($10). It was awesome! Crust was super chewy (in a good way) cheese had that slight texture to bite thru that you expect from a NY pizza, not a lot of sauce. My coworkers all enjoyed it. I can't speak for the freshness of the by the slice...I intentionally ordered my own pie to avoid that..but from the looks of it, wouldn't be too bad. Staff reheats individual slices in oven as ordered, which is what I would expect. My previous fave NY pizza was cossetta's, this place is more authentic NY to me (chewier crust). A little less grease that Cossetta's but still enough to know that eating half a pizza is definitely not good for you. All in all I am delighted! Can't wait to tell my friends.

FINALY a real pizza! New York style crust... As my man says you"re not obligated to eat the crust, you want to. Ordered the Long Island veggie- loaded with veggies: spinach onion, black and green olive, green pepper and mushroom. I'm so happy with this late night choice! NY, I will be back! Oh they also offer slices, sandwiches, Heros, calzones, salads wings and pasta. They make their own sauce!!

So excited to have found this place (thanks, Yelp!) because they're serving up the closest thing I've found to NY style pizza in MN. I just returned from my first-ever trip to NYC a week ago, and I came back a changed woman. Changed in that after I had NY pizza, I realized I'd been cheated my entire life out of what pizza passes for here in the Midwest (and most other places). See I'm a fan of thin crust pizza, but I don't like it to be to wet/floppy--it must have a crunch the entire way through. That's exactly what I found the pizza to be like in NY, and believe me I ate a LOT of pizza--6 different places in 2 days, as a matter of fact. I was like an out-of-shape 30-ish Midwesterner version of a teenage mutant ninja turtle out there when it came to pizza. I was unstoppable and as I boarded the plane to return home, I grabbed one last slice to soak up my tears of knowing I might never have pizza exactly the way I like it until one day I could return to NY. I ordered two slices of cheese to go. This place is TINY, maybe 5 little tables. There was a soccer game blaring from the TV which was why I deducted one star--I don't know what kind of chant or whistles were coming from the stadium crowd but it was damn near deafening and I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there, it was making me anxious. The crust was perfect!!! The sauce also had that slight sweetness that I found to be consistent with the NY pizza I tried. The cheese was just the right amount. Overall the flavor was maybe a LITTLE bland but what do you expect from plain cheese pizza?! Nothing a little shake of garlic salt and red pepper flakes can't fix, and I add that to all pizza anyway. Sorry, Punch and Luce, but this place is my jam now.

Any time I'm at a new slice joint I always order cheese first - it's the baseline by which all slices are judged. That being said, I've only been here once so that's all I have to go on, and I liked it. The crust has a nice crispy bite on the outside, is thin enough to fold, and is just thick enough to have a bit of structure and substance. The cheese slice was just under $3, which I thought was a great value, especially considering it was "New York" size. I was tempted to go for a Stromboli too (although in my opinion it would be hard to beat the old Rotisseria's stromboli on Lake & Lagoon in Uptown) but the offering at the moment I was there didn't sound appetizing to me. It's a slice joint, which are typically spartan by design, so I don't really care or pay much attention to the decor, but do have to say I was pleased by the atmosphere - it was a bit more cozy, friendly, and homey than I imagined it would be. Only four stars because the sauce was a bit bland - it could really use some spicing up. Bottom line: I'll be back for more slices and hopefully a delicious Stromboli. It's worth checking out - I mean for $3 how can you go wrong?

A tiny little hole-in-the-wall pizza place on Nicollet, and totally what you'd expect from a description like that. Big slices of New York style pizza and other tasty pizza restaurant staples. Throw in a couple of tables here and there, and bit of a New York/ Italian theme, and there you have it. Sure, it may not be the most authentic version of New York pizza, but so what. It's still delicious! I recommend the calzones. Literally, a block from my apartment in Minneapolis during my college days. In fact, the bus stop is right outside their front door, so getting a slice or a calzone was almost too easy. I blame A Slice Of New York for my freshman fifteen.

I can't comment on experiencing delivery here as I have only ever come here to sit down, so I will comment on the sit down experience. I went here last night with my best girlfriend Janelle because we needed to have our Daria moment (pop-culture reference for those of you that remember the show Daria) where we sat at a table and ate greasy pizza and talked about our day. Being in here is interesting, they have all of the most memorable moments in New York history hung up on the walls to decorate.. From teh construction workers on the girder during the building of the Empire State Building, the 1940's Time Magazine shot War's End Kiss, and a lot of remember 9/11posters. The concept of the restaurant is they have a few pre-made pizza's already out for if you would like to order by the slice, and when you do order they take off a HUGE piece (honestly it's almost a 1/3 of a pizza) and fire it as soon as you're done ordering. I ordered a slice of Margherita Pizza, 1 garlic bread roll, and a soda and was SHOCKED when my total came to just over $5! And once we were seated, the pizza was folded in half, and a napkin had been laid over my lap (I am perilously messy with pizza) I dove in, and looking back, I'm not sure if I took a breath between bites... It was SO GOOD. Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom!!!! I will definitely be going back to try out some of the other fares they have on the menu as i noticed they also have a full menu of pasta's, sandwiches, Gyro's, and all kinds of stuff! The only real thing to note is that there is VERY limited seating in the store, when they are busy it may be best to make it a picnic and take it to the park three blocks away :-)

Authentic calzones and NY style pizza - not too greasy, foldable, fantastic pepperoni and mushroom. Love their crust (it's the water!) Well worth delivery or a visit.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country.
