The Juicy Lucy lives up to the high expectations set by Yelpers as well as by its television notoriety (it was featured on Man vs. Food). My husband devoured it, savoring every bite. My California Burger was cooked perfectly as ordered (rare) and was just as delicious. The 5-8 is well worth its reputation. The only reason I didn't go for the fifth star is that the fries were nothing to write home about.

When you first walk into the restraunt you are greeted by a seat your self sign. The staff is running around and is very little help. Hustling! After you find your seat it takes just a few moments for the waitstaff to take your order. Once seated the service was very prompt. We placed our order and enjoyed 2 pitchers of beer before the food arrived(5 people). French Fries and Onion rings were split among the table(the only way to go). The the Juicvy lucy..... I had the california style which has a side of lettuce and tomato...Cost me an extra $1.10.. Not worth the purchase as the burger needed no accessories. The burger had a great flavor and was not over powered by any spices....Good quality meat...Not to light but definitely not to heavy. Will return for a second round..

After moving to St. Paul, I decided to try the legendary "Juicy Lucy" at this restaurant. I was impressed with not only the hamburger, but the cheese curds with fresh marinara as well! The prices are very reasonable, which is budget friendly for families. They have a separate bar area if one wants only to order drinks and appetizers. The service was very friendly and the beers were only $2 around 4pm. Keep up the good food and service!

Juuuuuuuiccccyyyyy luuuuucy! The 5-8 has a divey-hometown feel & fantastic juicy lucy burgers. A variety of cheesy yummy goodness to choose from. You will have to decide between a bacon/chz juicy, an Italian juicy, or even a PBJ juicy. The 5-8 has a good variety of beer on tap & a full bar. In the bar, you will find pull-tabs, a touch screen, a small, half-circle bar, & a few booths along the wall. The game is always on & the bar is almost always packed. The dining room is seperate from the bar, making the 5-8 appropriate families as well. This holiday season, the 5-8 even featured a dinner w/ Santa. Super cute! Love this place! Check it out!

It used to be good. Now they put cheese between two Frozen pattys instead of using fresh ground beef to make one big patty with cheese in the middle. Not good. If you want a good juicy Lucy I highly recommend the Nook.

Juicy Lucy with pepper jack cheese is delicious! More fries than I can ever finish. Great prices! Comes with cole slaw. Service is always prompt. A little cold inside the restaurant/bar and the tables are a little sticky. But I like the Snoopy right outside the front door!

H O H U M Now I have been here a couple times after work with a work crew, and had fun. I am pretty sure I had fun. Yeah, I had fun. But sharing the swiss cheese juicy lucy with daughter was a tad disappointing. Sorry, but it's the truth!!!!! My absolute 7/cranberry was ok, after 2 I did feel them a little, great after a frustrating situation. Our server gal was on the ball, and was on the spot, and was on speed, and was on good behavior. Our fries were mediocre. Our cole slaw was mediocre. Her wine was , ya, you guessed it, mediocre. While our JL was flavorful, the cheap bun ruined it for moi. I did LOVE the visual aspect of it. That's what a JL should look like! I made them once while in Phoenix for my friends, they had never heard of such a thing. Mine looked like the 5-8 burger, only with a better bun. And, compared to Vincent's cheese stuffed burger, this one is the WINNER! Take that, make your burger in a press, Vincent. W I N N E R W I N N E R B U R G E R D I N N E R

There is an ongoing debate in Minneapolis about whether the 5-8 Club or Matt's originated the Juicy Lucy. I don't know the answer. I do know the 5-8 Club (and associated 5-8 Tavern & Grill, that I am reviewing here) has a delicious Juicy Lucy. The 5-8 Tavern & Grill is convenient to my work and my house. The venue itself is not great. The building is old. The décor is tired. The tables are not great. But the service is excellent and the food is delicious. I went there for lunch recently and had a Juicy Lucy (with American cheese), onion rings, fried pickles, and cheese curds. Not good for me but very tasty!

I've been here a few times for lunch, and always enjoyed the food. The quantities are generous and the prices are inexpensive. They have a decent selection of beers, and the atmosphere is very laid back. My wife and I like to go here on "dates" and play cribbage while we eat. Good times.

Because their are so many great places in the cities to get a great burger and even a lot to get some shape or form of a great juicy lucy at, the 5/8 is not my very favorite but its darn close and if your near sunray area come here for a great burger.Another close by great option and top in my tier of burger joints is the Dspot in Maplewood as well but they dont serve beer.Come here if you want a more sit downy atmosphere than Dspot. You wont be disappointed, but make sure you order one of the juicy lucy burgers or saucy sally burgers, there other food is just average, these burgers I just listed are what makes this place tasty.

Nothing fantastic, but good burgers and bar sandwiches. I will say, I could just sit there, drink and load up on the onion strings. They are very gooood!

My friends are super junk food eaters so they definitely had to take me to one of the original Juicy Lucy joints. The wait was pretty long on an early Friday evening. I had the special juicy lucy (with white cheese and mushrooms) - I ate it with a fork. We also tried cheese curds (eek, def not something I can eat all the time), onion rings (not the best I've ever had), and fries. The decor was diner chic. Good luck avoiding a wait!

Driven by the 5-8 Tavern hundreds - no thousands - of times. Never stopped. Read somewhere--oh wait--probably on Yelp :) --that they had a Juicy Lucy. Never had one either, so we stopped on a Sunday. Had the bleu cheese burger - and I was not disappointed. It was simple goodness that needed no ketchup: hand-pattied ground beef filled with hot tangy bleu cheese, toasted bun and a couple of pickles, $5.50. We will be stopping back and trying the fish fry (also walleye) and other specials. Very reasonable and kid-friendly.

Wow. This is such a local Minnesota bar... with everything from the people to the decor to the food. I went there to try the famous "Juicy Lucy." I tried it with the blue cheese and I think it would have been better with cheddar. I also tried the Saucy Sally, which was a bit too saucy for me. Their cheese curds are good but their fries are only average. One thing though, it is so cheap there! I would definitely go back since it is so close to my mom's house.

Service was poor, 4 parties around us were seated after us and they all got the food before us, once our food came out it was cold. You could tell the waitress forgot about us. The fries were soggy, even the cheese in my Juicy Lucy (normally liquefied and to hot to bite) was firm, the bun was soggy. Stay away from the buffalo bites (It should be called Deep Fried Buffalo Batter), I cannot believe they can serve food like this. We were starving so we did not say anything. It's to bad, we love burger places. We will not go back.

Nice place inside. Kinda small. The juicys are not that great. The food looks good overall. Just not sure if here is as good as I have had elsewhere. Service was decent. Parking is ample. Check 'em out. I would go back, just not run back. They rate themselves pretty high because they were on the food channel or something like that and rated in a local publication.

Since my friends were in from out of town we HAD to have juicy lucys but didn't want to brave the downtown locations. Especially with a party of 8, we didn't have an hour to wait for a table and I called 2 other places that didn't take names unless you were actually on the premises. I can't blame them, but it would be nice if they did. Anyway, we decided on here because 1) it was close to home and 2) they said the wait was only 10 mins. There actually was no wait at all which was a nice surprise. We had cheese curds, lucys with jo-jos and onion rings, and one person had a wrap. I can't comment on everyone else's food, but my blue cheese juicy was dry, dry, dry. I'm not sure what happened but it was hard to get down. I stole a piece of bacon from a friend and that seemed to help some but I won't be getting that burger again. The curds were good as were the jo-jos. Our server was really nice and felt very bad for spilling water on the floor (didn't get us wet, only the floor). Everyone went home full and happy! I'll go back but next time I'll get a traditional lucy.

This is usually my go to place for a cold beer, great bar service from Lisa, and a hearty well cooked and flavorful meal. I mean, I've been to this place at least 40 times. I couldn't of been more disappointed. My date and I started with the fried pickles and they were so salty we can only eat about 3 to 4 each. I'm not talking about salt on top that could be wiped off, I'm talking about the batter full of salt and pickles were extremely salty. i've ordered this at least 20 times and loved it. Okay, so it didn't go good but maybe dinner will be okay. It did not. We ordered the hamburger steak to share and the walleye fish tacos to share. The fish tacos were on a corn tortilla, there were only two to the basket, the fish was fried fish sticks, and as soon as we picked up the tortilla, it simply fell apart because it it been sitting for so long. That meal was cold. The hamburger steak was okay, but it had a mound of onions on top of it that was probably as much weight as the hamburger steak itself. They threw the side salad for the steak on the same plate, which didn't work so well. So I normally have 3 to 4 beers and plenty of appetizers main dishes, and maybe even a dessert here. After one beer, we were ready to go. Melissa, our server, did her best, but they were throwing slob on plates and that's all she had to serve. There has to be a new management, or a new cook, or new attitude going on at this place, because it's not the same 58 visited six months ago. It was pathetic, and I will not go back for food here.

Very good fish fry. All you can eat cod at $10.99 on Fridays. The servers are quick to bring more crunchy hot strips of beer battered cod. Not a fan of the honor system seat yourself thing. Small waiting area that packs with people who give the stink eye to each other and the diners, waiting for the next table to open up. I watched as a few groups got scooped by others, and some crusty old bags who wouldn't take the next table because they wanted a better one; this caused confusion because they just stared at the ceiling rather than offering the table to another group.. Looking back, it was entertaining. I did have a horrifying experience here on Friday. It's Yelp, you don't know me, and I feel compelled to confess- I was seated on one of the flat wooden captains chairs, leaning foward talking to my wife and son, when suddenly I heard "POP,POP..pop.pop.POP.POP.pop,pop,pop". I thought it was gunfire!! Nope, I had unwittingly released a staccato volley of gas that was amplfied by the flat chair!! It was so loud that the tables on either side of us stopped mid-bite and stared at me. I was mortified, it came out of the blue without warning!! I would like to apologize to my fellow diners not only for that, but for giggling like a schoolgirl to the point of crying. I looked at my son, who at 15, I figured would be laughing also- NOPE, he just sat there, happily further adding to my embarrasment by pulling up his sweatshirt's collar over his nose and slouching in his chair. I feel better for having admitted that and hope you enjoyed the story, especially since you didn't happen to be sitting next to me.

I visited this establishment for the first time this evening. Some friends and I are huge fans of Bingo and have even created our own Bingo club called "Bingo Can Kiss Our Brown Stars." That's a whole other discussion. Anyhoo, they have bingo on Mondays so we went to check it out. It's legit bingo and they even provide daubers if you forget yours. Buck a game and 12 rounds. Average payouts were 40 bucks with a progressive cover-all jackpot. My fellow club members ordered food and were very satisfied with it. Since I'm trying to shrink my man boobies I abstained. I did however enjoy a bloody mary and it was fantastic. Nice and spicy with plenty of food in it. It even came with a beef stick and at only 5 bucks it can't be beat. To make a long story longer, I won 40 bucks and 3 of the 4 of us had bingos. This place rules.

Unlike most others who have written about the famous Juicy Lucy, I'm here to talk breakfast! This place is so famous for the burgers, that a lot of people may not know that they server breakfast on the weekends! And it is darn tasty!! The breakfast menu is pretty small and basic, but the food is delish. Perfectly crisp buttery hash browns, good steak and eggs, and an awesome country fried steak! The last time we went, the service was a little slow in the bar, and not super friendly. But the food made up for it. Gotta get there early though, they only serve breakfast til noon on Saturday and Sunday.

I've been here about three times. I live less than a mile from this location. It's great to know that a really good burger joint is near. I had the Saucy Sally during my first visit. Very delicious, but also kind of heavy. The second visit I had the Roadhouse burger. During this last visit, I had the Montana Jack Burger, which I really liked. I couldn't really taste the Heinz 57, but the blue cheese really came out. The burger comes with fried onion straws, which I thoroughly enjoyed as well. My husband and I will visit this place again and again whenever we have burger cravings. My husband usually orders the Juicy Lucy and he likes it a lot. Burgers are always juicy. You won't be disappointed.

It seems like whenever I'm down in Maplewood, I just can't find too many good places to eat. I found a new go-to place for good burgers and daily specials. The Tuesday special was only $6.99 yesterday when I went with two other adults. They both had that special and I had the Raodhouse burger. The hot roast beef sandwich and mashed poatoes had plenty of gravy on them and was very tasty. It was served with corn. The burger was delicious. Even the bun was amazing. We were very pleased with our food. Our waitress was not the friendliest, but she was OK.

I've eaten here several times, but nor for awhile and the last time i was there was NOT a good experience. First off, the most uncomfortable booths! What booth has a big five inch space at the BACK of the seat - did there used to be cushions? The only reason I gave it two stars (I reflected and am only giving it the one) instead of one is I've had decent meals in the past and my son's Juicy Lucy looked good. My Juicy Lucy was RAW in the center, discovered after just one bite. I just couldn't eat it and apologetically sent it back stating to PLEASE not cook the holy heck out of it - a normal doneness is all I need. We waited and waited and waited, and keep in mind this is after the initial wait for our food which was kind of long and I asked the waitress if she'd just have it packed to go. My son had long finished his whole meal and I had nothing the whole time I was there because she took my whole plate. After a 25 minute wait, and this was mid afternoon and they weren't busy, I finally got the check and my burger and paid. When I got home - just a few blocks away, I opened up the box to see the same burger cooked hard. I mean it was so well done it was HARD! No cheese because it had oozed out - remember, I took a bite. Fries disgusting, bun dry. I guess they sat under the heat lamp while the burger was being cooked - it was so dry I'd guess that it actually did sit on the grill for that 25 minutes. The waitress was borderline surly. Indifferent. No apologies for any of it.

The 5-8 is a prime example of a Minnesota neighborhood bar, and all the better for it. Not fancy, and more often than not you'll find yourself in conversations with complete strangers. Friendly as hell, and both times I was there I felt like one of the locals even though I moved to AZ 10 years ago Never had a Jucy Lucy, but I had the AM Breakfast Lucy . . . two sausage patties stuffed with cheese, and it was exactly what I expected. Darned tasty. I consider myself a chili aficionado, and I would definitely recommend theirs. Had a nice kick to it I'm also a complete whore for deep fried pickles done fresh, and the bartender said with pride that they are homemade. I would have liked the pickle chips a bit thicker, but they were definitely fresh and made in house The tap selection leaves a lot to be desired, but it's not a place you go for craft taps. If you want a nice stiff mixed drink though, I got poured a couple Hurricanes that I had to compliment the bartender on . . . talk about a stiff pour!

Best place for a juicy Lucy! I've been to three other places and no one makes a burger like this crew. Not the best decor, but this is one of the best burgers you'll get on the planet.

Great food, but every Saturday I've come, the bartender closes early. It's 11:30 and the server just told me its last call. I'm confused... Aren't they open until 1am??

Updating the 5-8 to 4 Stars We had lunch here yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised by the food. I had a turkey burger without cheese. It was full of flavor and not dry. The pretzel bun was also really good. My boyfriend said the food here is consistently good and "never disappointing." Oh, The 5-8 invented the Juicy Lucy, FYI. We'll be back.

Here's a fun riddle! What is worse to find in your Juicy Lucy: a) ample cheese plus a long black hair or b) nothing at all? Well I have had both at 5-8 and I still cannot tell you the answer. All I know is I never want to find out what option c) is. After my gag-worthy dinner service last year, I was contacted by management. The manager was kind and apologetic, and offered me 2 vouchers for juicy lucys after the hair we found in one. Of course it took me a good year for the flashbacks and my gag reflex to cease. Unfortunately, the vouchers only exposed me worse service that brought even worse food. I felt like I was at Ed Debevic's for a moment as the waitress literally threw our burger baskets on the table as she passed by. Every time we had contact with the sour server, my friend and I exchanged looks after like, "Did that really just happen??" And yeah, my Lucy was clearly not juicy, it was almost void of cheese, and the meat was flavorless. It came with just two sad tiny pickle slices on a dry bland bun. One additional star for management's retroactive effort, and for that broasted chicken that didn't suck that one time.

Good family friendly restaurant. The Juicy Lucy burger with pepper jack cheese was very good. The pepper jack is very spicy so you have to like the kick from the jalapeño. My husband and my sister ordered the Saucy Sally burger and both really enjoyed it. Napkins are required with that one. We also had JoJo potatoes which my kids loved because they had no jalapeños on them only only sour cream, bacon, cheese and a sprinkle of scallions -just right for Tweens. To end the meal we ordered the Doughboys. I was too full to try one but my kids said they were tasty! Our waitress was very accommodating and friendly.

The burger sub-par. I've had better juicy Lucy's but I wanted to give this place a shot because of all the hype I have heard. The cheese curds tasted better than the burger. Price is about the same as any other sit down burger joint. might come back

Was mad about my disappointing meal at The Strip Club so I needed a Juicy Lucy Sunday night to help ease the pain. Hubby wanted to head to Minneapolis location for fear of a suburbia shit show but I assured the Yelp reviews were favorable and we should give it a try. Located in a odd part of Maplewood , my GPS couldn't find this place nor did 411 have a listing for them. After getting lost and finally calling for directions we made it around 730pm. Parking lot was packed which was a good sign! We sat in the bar - had Nacho's and a few tall Summits to start. Beer was cold and on Happy Hour special - yippee!! . Nacho's were ok - not great, nor bad. Just your run of the mill nachos. Hubby had the Wild Wild West Chicken Sandwich - he put his coleslaw in the sandwich and his taste buds were smiling away. Happy man! I had the Blue Cheese Lucy and must say, I was impressed. The crowd in the bar were definitely not there for the food and a bit rough but maybe it's different in the restaurant. Overall we were pleasantly surprised and would def do a re-do when I have another Lucy attack.

It's an alright place, depending on what you o there for. If you are there for the Juicy Lucy, you are either left with a good burger, or a very disappointing one. I've had both. I guess it all depends on who is cooking the food, different cooks each time I went. If you are going for the Friday Fish Fry-PASS! I went, looking for a decent fish fry, was very disappointed after the first round of fish. First round was done right, everything tasted good and came out within a reasonable amount of time. Second and third rounds-BLEH! Fish was overcooked, coating was still soggy, like they suddenly forgot how to cook fish. Could not stomach any more fish due to the poor quality.

I've given the juicy Lucy two tries at the 5-8 at two different locations. I'm just at a loss for how this place is still in business. Both times, there was no cheese in the burger. None. How can you not toast the bun? It appears to be the 99 cent for a 12 pack buns you'd find at Cub. Cold and untoasted bun, luke warm burger without cheese, and I highly doubt it was 1/2 pound. No seasoning on the burger. The fries were pitiful. Frozen fries from a bag was just the last kick to the crotch. I really wanted to like the 5-8, but there is no possible way this place could ever be even in the same conversation at the Nook/Shamrocks let alone Matt's Bar. It was actually pretty sad. My daughter's grilled cheese had one lonely piece of cheese that covered maybe half of the bread with a few potato chip crumbs on the side. Please, I would emplore the owners of the 5-8 to try a real burger at the Nook/Shamrocks. I can guarantee that they would and should close the door after seeing how it should be done and realizing just how far away they are from a good burger.

The Tale of Two Shittys. My stomach rumbled as I stared longingly into Sam's right eye hoping desperately to find some glimmer of a suggestion on where to dine. Sam gazed off into the distance, her insides moaning the sounds of imminent death as our indecision drew out during the cold winter night. Our time drew more and more limited and our picture was to show soon. We were at our breaking point and rash decision was made out of desperation. The 5-8 seemed our only option left. We seated ourselves away from the drunkards roaming aimlessly and bumping into the tables.Okay, that didn't really happen. We seated ourselves in a booth which luckily exhausted heat on our frozen appendages. I requested a libation that which can only warm a soul from the inside; an ice cold beer. But, lest we not speak of the minor details only to draw out the mundane. Let us speak of the fare The Juicy Lucy - The burger that the 5-8 hold many honors. This burger straight up sucked ass. I don't get what the rave is about. Sam W's comment on the meat is accurate, the meat itself was very good and it did have a very beefy flavor. But, this isn't supposed to be a fancy beef patty. This burger is supposed to be the holy grail for liquid cheese gold. This liquid cheese gold is crap. It had no flavor, it added nothing. The burger was decorated with onion but nothing of interest and surprisingly it was pretty dry. I would take a Nook or BDP burger and cram it up this juicy lucy's butt just so something in this burger tasted like something I want to eat. Maybe I got a bad representation of what a juicy lucy is supposed to be (I hardly can say this considering this is claimed to have been invented at a 5-8) or maybe I just don't enjoy the famous stuffed combo, who knows... Sam's broasted chicken was exceptionally well cooked but tasted like it died from lack of seasoning. By seasoning, I mean salt.. or any flavor, really. I know Sam loved it and she devoured it, but I'm still scratching my head on that one. That's pretty much the extent of my feelings on that trip. One shitty down, one to go. My grandmother loves this place and I love seeing her smile, so we brought her here for dinner. I ordered a coffee with baileys right off the bat. I had sweet visions of rich warmth pushing the chill off from our polar vortex. Instead, though, I received essence of coffee and a baileys aftertaste. People that order coffee usually do it because, well, they like the taste of coffee. If you are one of these people, 5-8 does not cater to you. I think they might hate coffee here. Seriously. There's more coffee flavor in a barista's fart. Yeah, I can't believe I just said that either. My breaded walleye basket was a disappointment from the moment I laid eyes on it. What poor fish had to suffer only to be turned into thumb sized sticks and coated in a sad and bland breading. The sides weren't even noteworthy so I will not be noting them. Shitty two down. But, my friends, don't think it's all bad. I quite enjoyed the chili, albeit it was very spicy, so much so that my ears started burning. And the staff are more than accommodating and give you no grief when you send something back. They are really the reason I am giving three stars instead of the pathetic 2 that I originally was going to dole out. And so, my companion and I left the establishment no longer near deaths door. No longer at the hands of desperation. Our see globes wide as we peered toward our picture which had begun shortly thereafter. But, deep down I could hear the faint cries of yearning.. yearning for something more... Something... tasty.

I've heard the chatter about this place but didn't end up finding myself here until a few weeks ago when we took Jenny's grandma and dad out for dinner. They're both big fans of the fish fry here and on that particular night, all of us ended up ordering the walleye dinner. Truthfully, I wasn't impressed that night. The walleye was cut into extremely tiny (think fish stick sized) pieces and it was encrusted in an inch thick casing of under-seasoned breadcrumbs. 2/10 would not bang. The potato wedges were in various stages of doneness and the coleslaw was your basic deli style variety. The only thing I found myself liking about the meal that night was the price: All four of us ate for 35 bucks, drinks included. I shrugged it off and chalked it up to a fluke. Truth be told, I'd been eyeballing a number of other items on the menu that night and I made plans to return for another stab. As fate would have it, Jenny and I ended up here the other evening on our way to a movie. I tried a number of things, so I'll whip out one of my patented lists: - "Pig Pen" Wontons: Largely disappointing and poorly executed; they were icy in the middle and very greasy as though they'd been dropped in cold oil. Even so, I don't believe that proper preparation would've helped these things out. Their description (crispy wontons filled with ground beef, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, diced pickles and bacon) sounded INFINITELY more appetizing than it ended up being. The mixture was so heavily laden with pickles that it literally tasted like tartar sauce--I failed to detect any notes of beef or bacon, even texturally speaking--and we ended up sending them back to the briny depths from whence they came. - Chili: I'm sort of a chili snob, I'll admit. I have certain criteria that has to be met for me to be satisfied by a bowl, but I can be cool as long as two things are present in whatever's in front of me: 1. Lots of well-seasoned ground beef in substantial chunks. 2. A thicker more complex sauce. This chili was most definitely thin. Not Wendy's thin, of course, but it lacked any sticking power whatsoever. I actually had to ask Jenny if she had any meat in hers since I neither tasted nor visually detected any amount of it. The flavor was on the spicier end of average and was very one-note. Chili's just one of those things, though, and this one wasn't in my wheelhouse. I wouldn't discourage anyone from trying it because it may very well be in yours. - Jucy Lucy: This wasn't my meal, but I did taste it and feel compelled to leave commentary. I have no idea where they get their beef, but it packs a good amount of flavor. To put it shortly, it's very... beefy. The way beef more than likely used to taste before the pink slime shit we have everywhere now. However, it was completely devoid of seasoning. I understand wanting the flavor of the meat it to be showcased (and for good reason) but a small pinch of salt would just amplify the delicious factor. - Broasted Chicken: Fuck. Yes. Holy. Balls. This is what will keep me coming back here. The price is amazing (a quarter chicken dinner with all white meat is $7.99), the taste is phenomenal and the juiciness is unparalleled. I had broasted chicken for the first time many years ago in Illinois and have been hooked ever since. I'm thrilled to have found it here and I'm even more thrilled that the quality is up to par. The exterior has a perfect amount of light crunch and saltiness. Once past the skin, the meat (the WHITE meat) is so tender it practically falls from the bone with the slightest provocation. I absolutely decimated every ounce of chicken on my plate. There may have been fries or some shit. I was in far too blissful a hazy poultry mouthgasm to recall. Bottom line? This place, to me, is all over the fucking map. I wasn't even entirely positive of the star rating I should give it. On one hand: various poor preparation flaws, underwhelming flavors, weird tartar sauce wontons served with an even weirder hoisin type sauce. On the other hand: Broasted chicken. ......................... THREE STARS IT IS.

It's a nice play if you want to go and just hang out with friends for a burger. The reason this gets only 3 stars is because the "lucy juicy burger" was made out to be so fantastic but it wasn't as great as it sounded... Theres no lettuce or tomatoes in there so if you like your burger complete- be sure to ask for that in there... other than that... it was clean and cute decor.

This outpost of the 5-8 is kind of off on an island in Maplewood, but still offers the namesake Jucy Lucy that made the south Mpls location famous, as well as more traditional comfort foods (i.e., fried food). The space itself is divided into two sections, the bar and the restaurant, all of which are first-come-first-serve and seat yourself. The bar offers a few tap selections, pretty reasonable happy hour deals and a fairly low-key atmosphere, whereas the restaurant is usually filled with a wide demographic of people from the neighborhood and is pretty welcoming of all ages. The Jucy Lucy (and numerous spin-offs of the original) are what made the 5-8 famous, and while they're fine here, the torch has been passed to other burger joints in town when it comes to stuffing cheese inside a burger in my opinion. They do offer a pretty broad menu though, and the various salads, sandwiches, etc. I have had have been fine, if not entirely predictable in the Midwestern comfort food kind of way.

The best burgers around! The Saucy Sally is my favorite burger here, it is what the Big Mac dreamed it could be! The sauce is so much better then Mickey D's! The Juicy Lucy is also the best around! Try the Pig Pen Eggrolls, they are my families favorite appetizer. My only complaint is the lack of a hostess on busy nights. The seat yourself concept works great when your at a slow peak, but not when busy. Many people leave due to the wait and lack of guidance from the staff.

I always like eating at any of the three 5-8 restaurants. I have been on the fence about the new PB&J Juicy Lucy but this time I finally tried it. I am a huge lover of all things peanut butter but, peanut butter and jelly in a Juicy Lucy? As it turned out, the saltiness of the burger and the peanut butter was balanced very well with the sweetness of the strawberry jam and it made for a rather tasty treat! As always the service was good and prompt and the onion straws were just the ticket for a Saturday afternoon.

This was the second and last time we will come here! The first time we had Juicy Lucy's ,they were ok not spectacular . I noticed broasted chicken on the menu. Thought it would be a fun night out together. Six of us decided to order the chicken. We all ordered half of chicken to take a care package home. The chicken was cooked to the jerky stage!! I mentioned it to the waitress and she basically laughed it off, said she would mention it to the cook because they are friends. NOTHING else. The whole meal was a very mediocre experience . The chicken was horrible. Jethro's in White Bear/Mahtomedi has far tastier chicken.

Normally i am a strong lover of the juicy lucy, and when I showed up here I was eagerly awaiting mine. I ordered the lucita burger, and the hostess brought it out. I began eating the burger, and realized something was wrong. Upon further investigation my burger was filled with peanut butter and they had brought the wrong burger out to me. Unfortunately I have a peanut allergy, and suffered from an allergic reaction afterwards. IF YOU HAVE A PEANUT ALLERGY DO NOT EAT HERE. The cheese curds were good though.

Thanks for the totally burnt juicy Lucy Togo order Friday. Seriously anybody that made that has no business being a cook anywhere. Fn common sense. And I left a tip. Got me twice. Thanks much. Should have taken a pic of it. Cheese on a puck. Get a clue up there. Probably won't be back.

Conversation was good, bartender was attentive and attentive. The Juicy Lucy was way overcooked and not enjoyable. Was like eating the soles of your shoes after dipping them into grease. Offered no discount nor did she take it off my bill. Customers were friendly and a pleasure to chat with.

My wife and I had a $30 Groupon here and we had done a hemophilia charity walk around Como Park and since we were in the eastern part of the Twin Cities, we decided to try the 5-8 juicy lucy out. Our waitress was fantastic and I ordered a tall Summit EPA to start us off. I opted for the original Juicy Lucy with American cheese with a sub of a side salad for fries. My wife got a cup of chicken noodle soup, which she LOVED, and a side salad. I really loved the bleu cheese dressing, because I am guessing that they get a great brand since there are huge hunks of cheese in there. The Juicy came out and I took one bite. It kind of pissed me off that all of my cheese drizzled out after my bite. I think they need a slice of cheese on all of these so if your cheese jizzez out, you still get a little taste of it with every bite instead of having to dip it into the molten lava cheese. The bun was full and flavorful though. I want to say the Nook is still my favorite Lucy, but the 5-8 is a solid second!

The 5-8 is a staple of the Twin Cities, and while not the original, the Maplewood location is very good, compared with the original and compared with other Minnesota staples. I wanted to give it 3 1/2 stars but I rounded up. The 5-8 only serves bar food, and it does it well. This is not a place for special orders or for cocktails, this is a Vikings fan, Wild watching kind of place, and for that I love it. the Jucy Lucy and a beer is all you need to order, anything else is a nice bonus, service is very good, and if you love this less than perfect state we live in, then this is something you need to check out. I've been coming back year after year and maybe that deserves a five star review, but four is good, like the Viks reaching the play offs and isn't that something every Minnesota resident wants to see.

Middle of the road on the Jucy Lucy War. Ci's Jucy was so much better than mine as I glared at her with envy watching her cheese ooze out of her burger. My Jucy, pretty much was a dry burger with a tiny bit of cheese inside. WHERES MY CHEESE???? With our Jucy's or our one Jucy and hamburger, we had Jo Jos and Onion Rings. The Jo Jos were fine, took most of them home for Ci to eat later and I don't do onion rings so cant speak of those. Nothing fab here, Server was sweet and attentive as they usually are in these types of establishments. I liked the 5-8 Tavern in Bloomington WAY better than this one but I more than likely wont visit either again. Blue Door has my heart with Jucy Lucys.

First off, it's a seat yourself type of place. Next, for the East Side of Saint Paul, this will get the job done if you're craving a Juicy Lucy. Personally I like Matt's in Minneapolis for their simplicity of their Juicy Lucy, but over at the 5-8 Taven, I do like that the have a variety of Juicy Lucys that you can choose from. I've tried their 'Luigi' which was Italian based, and a 'Santa Fe' one which had a chipotle kick. Both were great and different than the generic cheese in meat patty. Make sure to come here for some cheap beers during happy hour too, and take a picture with the Snoopy house outside once you've had your food coma.

Back when I was a kid, this place used to be a sort-of classy restaurant called "Beau's". It had a very 60ish/70'sish decor (and this was in the mid 80's!!). My grandparents used to take my brother and I here for dinner sometimes when my parents would drop us off for a sleepover. It's hard to describe but it used to be sort of like Nye's Polonaise room in a way. That sort of ambiance and an older crowd. They had a weekend brunch too that the grandparents liked. Anyway, fast forward to the early 2000's and this place gets sold. It's the 5-8 tavern and grill now. I'm not sure what 5-8 means, but they basically ripped out all the old carpet and decor and really made it more of a basic sports bar with sort of a ground-round (if you remember those) type feel with an eat in bar on one side and restaurant on the other. When the smoking ban went into effect they also built an enclosed 3 season patio for the smokers. It really is kind of a dive bar for locals. There is some cheaper housing nearby as well as some apartments and a trailer park. That's the sort of crowd it draws. The address is technically Maplewood, but it's no where near downtown Maplewood. It's more like Saint Paul's East side. They have decent burgers and bar fare. It's not bad. They are known for their big burgers, and they are pretty good. If you go around dinner time while the sun is still out, it's not a half bad place. The crowd is a little "rougher" if you go in the late evening, but at dinner time it's not too bad to just pop in for a beer and burger. Overall, it's really got nothing to offer for me. It's sort of like Moe's on the simpsons later at night. Just a bunch of regulars drinking away on their barstools. They don't have bands, they don't really have sports nights or anything, no darts, no pool table, no Buzztime trivia. I think at one point I remember seeing a golden tee video game and a deer hunter arcade game but both of those were gone the last time I went. It's usually fairly empty, even on the weekends. It's just a watering hole for slobs once dinner time comes and goes. Sorry. That's what it is.

So, this was my first time here and I have to say... the server was great. She was attentive and helpful with the menu. However, the food was so below par I would rather go to Mc Donalds, get a dollar cheeseburger and let it get cold before eating it over this place any day. At least the meat has flavor there. I got a Juicy Lucy as I heard they were famous for that burger. But... they really shouldn't be. It was rather gross. Bland not even salt! DRY not Juicy. And the cheese was cold even though its supposed to be hot. It was just all around nasty. I can make a better one at home with frozen patties and a slice of cheese. This experience was SO disappointing! They gave me a slice of chocolate cake to try and make up for the disgusting "Juicy Lucy" but alas that was also dry and tasted like fridge. Perhaps some plastic wrap over the top would be helpful?! It honestly tasted like it was in the fridge, sliced and uncovered for about 5 days... just not good. I will not be returning. I'll take The Nook over this place anyday. Did I mention how disappointed I was?!

We stopped in around 4pm a few weeks ago, What the heck is going on at 5-8 ? We had to send our burgers back 3 TIMES as they were not thoroughly cooked. Same for the fries. The waitress was nice about it & then said " new cook, he's the manager " Seriously , not a good thing to say to customers, duh ! Plus one shouldn't have to ask several times for refills on soda & coffee. Very disappointing.

We decided to stop in here since we were in the area and have eaten at the 5-8 club in Minneapolis many, many times. The place was full, however as we were looking for an open table, we noticed a party just finishing up and leaving. Ended up not having to wait for a table at all which is just what we were hoping for. After sitting at our table for about 7-10 minutes, we were finally greeted by our "server". Since we already had ample time to look over the menu, we put in our order for waters 3 jucy Lucy meals, and a chicken sandwich basket. We also asked for a bowl of chili as an app. I kindly asked our server if we could get the table wiped down. (It was filthy, and I knew nobody had gotten a chance to wipe it down since we took the table right after the last party left). Few minutes later our server brought our waters. After watching our server walk past us about 5 times, I stopped her and asked her again if we could please get the table wiped down. She returned right away and proceeded to wipe down the table. While she did wipe down the table, she didn't bother to wipe it down how any person with half a mind would do. She wiped it down, brushing the crumbs and god knows what else all over the 5 of us sitting at the table!! My wife has been in the service industry for years, so I guess I come to expect a high level of service from restaurants. I dismissed her lack of "service" and just hoped the food would make up for it. Well, it did to an extent. The cole slaw was to die for! The kids and wife had no complaints, however the onion rings were the worst I've ever had. Again though, the service I received is what turned me off from ever coming back to this location. As many times as our table was passed by our server, not once did she ask us if we needed anything else. Not once did she offer to refill our waters. We had to hunt her down for refills. Had to ask her twice for the check, and had to ask her twice for a box. Grant it the restaurant was full, but to me, that is no excuse. I would expect to have to wait a little longer for things, but I would not expect the "service" to be compromised. To say the service was horrible would be an understatement. I've gotten better service at a buffet then I received today. The two stars are warranted because I felt the jucy Lucy's were decent ( still prefer matts bar though!!). Not worth making another trip to this one though... I'll stay at the minneapolis location.

Sit in the bar for some atmosphere. The dining room's kind of bland. Above average bar fare. Broasted chicken & Juicy Lucy are 2 good reasons to come back. Also, good breakfasts. Stopped in over the weekend and had a very nice ham & cheese omelet washed down with a tasty Bloody Mary.

We visited the Greater East Side and just had to hit the 5-8, where each member of our crew tried a different variation of the Juicy Lucy -- they were all great! We received excellent service as well and really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere.

We usually go on Saturdays. Their special is a shrimp basket. They are awesome. I love the shrimp here. Jumbo and delicious. If you get it without the basket, it costs less, not every place will do that for you. Their haystack onion appetizer will feed about 4-5 people, but they're so good. If you go on a Saturday, get there right at or just after noon, less busy then.

I've driven by this place for years but never stopped in. After seeing the Juicy Lucy challenge on the Food Network, I went to go try this place out. Thumbs down! My Juicy had zero flavor, although it was very cheesy. The burgers are also small. I expected a whopper size burger, but it was half the size I was expecting. The place was dirty. Tables were left uncleared and floor was messy. The prices were about the same as every where else that served gourmet burgers. Maybe if I was craving a burger and didn't want to drive to the Nook, I would go back.

Decent local dive, with a neat story behind the original restaurant which I believe to be closer to downtown MSP. The original location (not this one) used to be a speakeasy back in the day! Ate dinner here with a colleague who humorously (but half seriously) commented as we were getting out of the car, "Let's head in, even though we might get the shi** kicked out of us". I think he spotted the biker on the steps smoking a stogie. It was packed with a local, bit rough around the edges, but surprisingly cordial crowd. I had the reuben which was pretty decent, albeit the meat was a bit tough, but very flavorful. My friend had a pork tenderloin looking thing which he said was good. The Jo-Jo's are very tasty. Definitely a local hangout for reasonably priced food and drink specials. Nothing to worry about here, go ahead and shimmy on up to the bar (or a table) for a decent meal and drink.

Juicy Lucy is not flavorful. Saucy Sally is where it's at!!! Flavorful! For you onion people, you MUST get the Onion shreds! Eat it and/or stuff some in your burger. Can't ever go wrong with that. Nice little joint and good service.

    (4)
  • Mike O.

Most of the food here is fantastic. For me, The Saucy Sally is one of the best tasting burgers anywhere. Its a little sloppy, but dang good! I dont recommend the onion rings. They are very hard to chew. To me, the Juicy Lucy is pretty good, and about equal to all the Juicy Lucy bars around town. I also tried the parmesan chicken bacon wrap a couple times. One time it was FANTASTIC, and the other time it was just very good. Pretty nice staff also.

Went here on Superbowl Sunday because my wife wanted a "juicy lucy" and found this place on yelp. Never knew the 5-8 did juicy lucys till today, so I figured we'ed give it a shot. We were VERY pleased! We ordered chicken strips for an appetizers, very good! Good bloody Mary's too, a meal in themselves practically, with pickles and a beef stick in it! Burgers were good. We will be back.

The 5-8 in Minneapolis gets plenty of attention, and rightfully so, but I just love their location in Maplewood. It's a bit out of the way, but Ive eaten here several times when visiting friends in the St. Paul area. It's a divey restaurant, but this is Minnesota--home of the juicy Lucy--and it gets no better than the 5-8. You can debate between Matt's and 5-8 all you want, but the juicy Lucy is a delicious creation. Whether it's the original or some of the newer varieties like a wild rice burger or one of my favorite--a burger stuffed with pulled pork--you definitely get some satisfying Minnesotan comfort food. I havent tried the chicken, but I have it on good authority that that's another great menu item. The interior leaves a lot to be desired, but keep in mind that it's almost supposed to be a divey/bar & grill type place. Service is ok--sometimes it can take awhile to get your order out. Hard to complain after you dig in though. I definitely recommend the 5-8 to anyone looking for a burger experience, and if you have friends that arent familiar with the juicy Lucy, it is your duty to make sure they experience it. Pros: Best juicy Lucy, variety of juicy Lucy options, casual/neighborhood establishment, their own parking lot Cons: Divey interior, service can be slow

you pretty much suck....I came to try the "Juicy Lucy" burger that everyone raved about and pretty much starved my self for an hour and thirty minutes, since your yelp page states you close at midnight and I arrived at 11:15pm to find your location CLOSED? I drove from Saint Cloud on my way back to my hotel in Bloomington. As far as the "Juicy Lucy" goes.....Will try one day when they are OPEN !!! :P UPDATE: Finally got to go back and decided to give them a try.....I seated myself at the bar area next to what felt like old cowboys sitting around watching i hockey game that was previously played the night before to which I knew the end results. So I betted the guy next to me, as a joke, a beer if I could pick the final score of 4-3 loss......I won my beer. Back to the juicy lucy, so I decided to wait 5 minutes after I received my burger to let the molten lave cheese inside cool down. What makes this burger perfect is that you allow the cheese to drip over the fries to give you cheesy fries!!!! Good burger overall but I wouldn't say WOW!!!

No sure if 5-8 is the actual original founder of the Juicy Lucy or if Matt's bar is, but in my opinion the 5-8 IS THE BEST. One up with the Saucy Sally, basically "Big Mac-ify" a Juicy Lucy with grilled onions and thousand island dressing integrated into the cheese sauce IN the burger. 5-8 is definitely best in town, in comparison to "Matt's Bar" and "The Nook/Shamrock's".

I really like the 5-8. Typically the service is not the greatest but this past Saturday, they were en fuego. We got the cheese curds and onion strings for appetizers and as expected, both were really good. I tried a Saucy Sally burger and it seemed to be the 5-8 equivalent of a Big Mac, only much better. My wife and son both had straight up Juicy Lucys. I would give the 5-8 a 5 for this visit but all previous visits were strictly a 4.

It's a bar with bar food - and I like it, so deal. I'm not going to get into an argument over who's Lucy is better, Matt's Bar or The 5-8. But I have to give it to these folks; they can serve a good burger with an excellent selection of beers to choose from. If you're looking for a place to dine that's not complicated, this is an excellent choice.

Great place for a Juicy Lucy! Had the Pepper Jack - great burger. Nothing can compare to how great it feels when the cheese oozes out of your burger after taking a bite - rushing for the next so that you don't lose anymore cheese. Also had the Chili - pretty good as well. Had a nice little kick to it. You expect a lot out of a burger when you're not going to the usual fast food chains, and the one's they offer here do not disappoint. It looks like they try to tend to many different burger palates with their selection. It's worth the extra couple bucks for a quiet setting and great food. the two times I've gone there, it has not been so busy that I couldn't get a table (mid-week lunch, weekend dinner). Luckily I live close by so I could satisfy my burger or chili crave when there's no time to make it myself.

Ventured into the bar and encountered some friendly folks. The buffalo wings we had were great. I mean, they were really good. The bartenders need some people skills though. We went in to watch a Timberwolve's game and have some beer and wings. God forbid we ask the bartender to turn on the game, she rolled her eyes and about 20 minutes later finally turned it on. Then God Forbid #2, Sound on? We were told that she won't turn on sound for a basketball game. By that time there were literally 5 people in the place. Would it have killed her to turn on the sound of a basketball game in a bar with us making up 3 of the 5 people in the bar?

I gotta give em 5 stars for the saucy Sally. Killer burger. We usually go to the nook when we are in town but 5-8 is going to take the top spot. They will even cook the burger rare, the nook won't. Get here you won't be disappointed.

My hubby took me here because I heard that the lucy juicy was supposed to be the best hamburger. I tried the lucy juicy with blue cheese and my hubby ordered a pepperjack lucy. Both were ok but nothing special. I am not saying the burger was bad but I enjoy seasoning on my burgers and there just wasn't any flavor. I will say the fries were great. I ordered the JoJo's and they came hot to the table. As dumb as that sounds many establishments I go to don't bring out piping hot potatoes like they did here with the meal. Prices were reasonable. Our burgers cost a little under $5 but the cost of the potatoes is extra, so you end up paying about $7 - $8 anyways like any other typical restaurant. Would I go back here? Probably not as I don't live close to it but if I was close and hungry I would go back and try something else on the menu. They did have a pretty large variety of items on the menu. Indoor and outdoor patio seating was available.

This place is a staple for me when I come into town to visit. The juicy Lucy is legit (go pepper Jack cheese)!

It used to be good. Now they put cheese between two Frozen pattys instead of using fresh ground beef to make one big patty with cheese in the middle. Not good. If you want a good juicy Lucy I highly recommend the Nook.

The burger sub-par. I've had better juicy Lucy's but I wanted to give this place a shot because of all the hype I have heard. The cheese curds tasted better than the burger. Price is about the same as any other sit down burger joint. might come back

I've been here a few times for lunch, and always enjoyed the food. The quantities are generous and the prices are inexpensive. They have a decent selection of beers, and the atmosphere is very laid back. My wife and I like to go here on "dates" and play cribbage while we eat. Good times.

  • Nikki B.
