Hire some more servers and bartenders. Your place is packed but service constantly sucks. The place is packed with drunk people early in the night. I'm surprised how drunk they are able to get when there is only two bartenders and no wait staff to serve surrounding tables. They always have some large male human checking ids when you walk in that has an chip on his shoulder, which is strange because your just checking ids!! Doesn't take much talent. How about the bathrooms, apparently there was puke all over the men's bathroom as reported from one of my male friends. When I visited the women's bathroom the garbage was overflowing, automatic sink water that would burn your hand and a drunk chick talking to herself in the mirror.

Bad bartender from Mad Jacks is here. So if you want to wait for a drink while she chats.

Food is ok, about what to expect for the price range, which I didn't think was too bad. I do think it is a fun atmosphere though. Plenty of seating and friendly waitstaff in the bar area.

Not a terrible place, but the food is terribly over priced. $10.95 for an order of (5) boneless Buffalo wings.

portions are small and overpriced. Server got our drink orders wrong three times in a row. Fries were served cold, and hard and dry. Seriously?? what chef would even serve fries in that condition?. We sent them back and did receive replacement fries after about 10 mins and they were better. My husband and son ordered a plate of wings to split which were so bad that my wing loving guys refused to finish them. Sad!! Wouldnt recommend eating here unless u r absolutely starving. Its only slighlty better than fast food.

Had lunch here. Walleye was over battered and soggy. Onion rings same. Cole slaw was good. Price was high. Service was good. They need a better chef.

The menu offers several options but every time I've eaten there, I've not been impressed. The food is just okay but nothing to write home (or on Yelp) about. Don't be fooled by the fact that their parking lot is packed. There aren't many dining options in Hugo. I also have to mention their service. I've been to the Blue Heron a handful of times and every time the service has been terrible...slow, non-attentive and unfriendly. I think the only reason you might want to go to the Blue Heron for is If you're looking for a place to have some drinks and watch the Vikings game. They offer $1 tacos during Vikings games. Other than that, you're better off dining elsewhere.

Everything was good EXCEPT the salmon. Seriously not good. Which surprised me cause I make terrible salmon and this was on par with mine. I never thaw mine cause I'm in a hurry and it comes out thin and dry and chewy. So does blue heron's. Surprisingly they say it's one of their specialties! Mom and step dad loved their pasta dishes so I guess your safe with those options. Loved the warm bread and butter and crab cakes. Comfort food mmmm. I really was hoping for a soft thick buttery slice of salmon.

Good place to come for a nice casual dinner - a step up from Friday's or Chili's, but not stuffy or super expensive. Came with a group of 12 plus a toddler. We had made reservations in advance and they were able to accomodate us with no issues. Service was prompt and friendly. Everyone enjoyed their meals and I felt the prices were typical. I would have given 4 stars, but the Cuban sandwich I ordered wasn't that great and it was listed as one of their "signature" dishes. There aren't many choices in Hugo, so I would definitely go back again and order something else.

Not a bad place to eat. I recommend making a reservation.

I give the restaurant 3 stars for consistently delicious wings and Macaroni and Cheese, and have been for many of my visits decently happy. Service has always left something to be desired - it is slow, sometimes rude, and very inattentive. HOWEVER, tonight was the worst service experience I have ever had. We were sat by one of their hosts, who always seem to be pissed at the world. Ten minutes later and a separate server - not ours - came to take our drink orders. Our server was the most inconsiderate, inattentive server I've ever had. We placed a appetiser order, and then he returned for our food order. 25 minutes later, and we haven't received our appetiser of wings. We flagged down another server, since our was nowhere to be found, to ask about the wings. Both her and the manager blatantly lied about the wings - we were told that they take 20 minutes to cook. One of my dining companions is a chef, and I am employed in the restaurant industry. In no world do wings take 20 minutes. She promised to remove it from the bill, but that didn't happen. Remainder of the night consisted of good food and increasingly awful service - the server checked in only twice, and only then for the time it took to check in and run. I've always been willing to return despite the service, but this may be the last straw.

Dropped in for super on our way back from the cabin. 30 plus minutes to get our food. Server- Shana M. (as reflected on the credit card slip) was flat out rude and inattentive. We told the manager that the food was slow and she informed us that they were really busy. The kids were not offered ice cream which was a part of their meal. In short, food was ok but the service was subpar and management wasn't overly concerned that our experience was bad. Don't waste your time here.

I like the blue heron because it is a local friendly bar/restaurant. I've had a pastrami sandwich which was really good. Hamburgers are good also. The outdoor patio and deck is a relaxing atmosphere Overall this is a great place to stop in for happy hour and dinner

The food is decent. Be aware that part if the outdoor seating is next to a drainage swamp (no smell) and gets buggy at night.

We had a very pleasant lunch here: we had none of the problems cited in other reviews. We had entre salads for a Saturday lunch. Roast beef salad was excellent as was the shredded chipotle chicken salad. Server was prompt. We ate in the dining room. It was quiet and pleasant. (The sports bar & TVs are in a separate room.) So it's worth giving this place a try, because there are not a lot of choices in Hugo.

Stopped by The Heron for a light lunch before a long day of competitive fun with the lady. It's one of her local places and invited to come out and try it, so here we go. Very nice ambiance in there. Sports bar meets dining hall, with a solid separation between the two so you're not overpowered with drunks while you're sitting in the dining room trying to enjoy a meal. We took up residence in the bar area, which was solid for seeing people try and sober up with the bloody bar sitting next to us (and for some, keep the drunk times going from last night apparently). I opt for the Heron House salad, with chicken. The woman opted for the chef salad. For those looking for a sweeter salad, this is for you: Spring mix, Craisins, candied walnuts, bleu cheese crumbles & our signature pomegranate vinaigrette. Was a really good mix of sweet-salty given the ingredients. Veggies were crisp and fresh. I even managed to steal some not over cooked bacon (remember this for later) from my date to give me even more of a sweet-salty kick, which almost got me a kick in the shin, but, it's worth it for bacon. The proportion was really well sized for a salad. No complaints at all, and even the chicken was plentiful and not looking like some grocery store variety. I did get my hands on the chef salad after she had her fill (as is the case with damn near anyone I eat out with these days). Remember the bacon comment? Some of the bacon was totally over done, which thoroughly pissed me off. I don't get mad often, but, burning bacon to the point of it being like chewing on a chunk of wood will get me to the point of being pretty pissed. Veggies were solid, cheese was a nice fine shred, so no complaints there. Service was a bit lacking. The napkin covered empty plate I created sat there for some time before it was taken away. Not sure if I needed to make a flag to signal the plate was ready to be taken away, so maybe next time I'll try that. All in all, a solid place I'm sure I'll visit again, and no big issues with that. I'll be sure to test the bacon next time to ensure they don't over cook it. I don't give screwing bacon up 3 strikes. Get it right in two, or **** you.

Average blue collar Minnesota restaurant. Standard bar and grill food. Nothing stood out. Just kind of blah. Pull tabs were unexpected.

When we walked in, past the bar and bartender. Not greeted by the bartender as it was past 10 pm so the dining area was closed and the sign said seat yourself. the waitress tries yet it's not her fault if the kitchen sends out wilty lettuce that is the thicker part close to the bottom of the head. I went to the end of the bar to order a drink and the bartender was ignoring me while snacking on some food and chatting with the women he stood by. Took forever. This is the second time I have tried his place. I live close. And will drive twice as far to eat to stay away from now on. Not impressed.

Love this place. Have been here many times. However, the bartender was displeased with our choice of music (which we were paying for) and felt the need to turn it down and up accordingly. I'm sorry, but don't your guest's needs outweigh those of your employees?? Not very good "customer service" in my opinion. And I work in the industry so...

The food would be 3 stars but the service is 2 stars. The server didn't tell us the day's special.

I have been here three or four times, and every time it is absolutely awful. The food is terrible, the service is crap (even on a slow day at lunch). Their only saving grace is their bloody mary bar on Sundays. Which is "build your own", so I guess I am really complimenting myself. My friend and I arrived at approximately 8:30pm on Thursday 12/27. The hostess barely acknowledged our presence before asking if we wanted to sit in the bar or in the restaurant. We said bar, and she led us to a table. Didn't say any kind greeting such as "enjoy your meal", etc. We waited as 5 (count them....FIVE) waiters passed our table chatting with each other. I tried to flag someone down to order a drink from, with no luck. After 15 minutes, I asked my friend if we should move to the restaurant side, where we might get service. I told the hostess we needed a new table because we sat for 15 minutes and no one came to our table. She barely mumbled an apology, and sat us in a booth on the other side. Our waitress came over, took our drink orders (which took about 15 minutes to get to us). We ordered the Thai spring rolls. And this is where it gets interesting.... Absolutely the WORST spring rolls I have ever tasted. Additionally, it was as though they were too lazy or too cheap to actually make individual rolls and they made one large roll that they sliced in to 'sushi' like pieces. It fell apart as we tried to grab it. They were dreadful. My friend and I were catching up for the holidays, which is why we chose a middle meeting space. As we sat, the waitress came over (already in her coat and scarf) to tell us her shift was over and that somebody else would be taking over. Talk about unprofessional. I get it. Your job is done, you want to go home. But SERIOUSLY in your COAT? Before you tell your table you are leaving? Ridiculous. And a poor reflection of management at this place. Don't go there unless you want to waste your time and money.

We had business in Hugo last night and asked a family member if there were any places to eat there. :-) She directed us to the Blue Heron and it was our good fortune to hit $5 Burger Plate night. For five dollars it was a burger (with up to four "toppings" at no added charge) and fries. Tough to beat. The fries were really good and the burger was good, too. No complaints about the food. Service was good. I would have given it another star if the waitress hadn't asked us if we "want any change back" from the $20 bill we paid the check with. I was too stunned to say yes so her tip was about 25% of the bill. Bad form. What other business asks if you want your change back?

Good food but every time we eat here they tack on the cost for an extra drink that we didn't have onto our bill! What's up with that? If you eat here watch your bill for hidden extras!!

A good place to grab lunch or appetizers if you are in the general area. Overall, the dishes are generally overpriced. In general, I would classify the food as "a notch above traditional bar food." The patio is nice, and the beer selection is above average. It is one of the better places to meet people between Forest Lake and Shoreview, but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

The blue heron has come a long way since it first opened and I have to say it's for the better. No complaints and the bar staff is very good. Great late night happy hour deals too!!!

This place has great potential yet everytime I visit I feel short changed. The food is okay , the atmosphere is nice. The prices are way to high for the quality and quantity. Most importantly the service is poor. I have been here numerous times (long enough apart that I imagine that the service HAS to be better than last time) and each time been disappointed. Unfortunately there is not enough competition around to give them the wake up call and improve on one of the most important aspects of dining...service. Unless your desperate and feeling lucky keep driving.

I was disappointed with the service, the food is lackluster, and really the people who are there all the time (from what I hear) are people I didn't hang out with in highschool and have no desire to hang out with now -- especially in a bar with bad service and overpriced drinks/food.

I have been greatly disappointed by both the service and quality of food at The Blue Heron. Prior to its opening I was very excited at the prospect of having a bar and grill type restaurant in Hugo because restaurant options are rather limited here but have unfortunately been unhappy with each visit. The food is mediocre at best and over priced. The drink prices are also rather expensive and for some reason they don't consider Leinenkugel or Summit (both locally brewed) to be "domestic" beers. The last time I was there we had to wait over fifteen minutes for our waitress just to take our drink order and we were the only people in the dining room. We've given the Blue Heron tries but now we will not be going back. Even though it is the closest restaurant to us by far, it is worth a 10 minute drive to have better service, food and prices.

Previously, we were impressed by the BHG. But last time, the waiter brought a chicken pasta that was woefully short of chicken. He corrected the problem Problem was that when I sent an email to the general manager...I got NO RESPONSE...whether he agreed with me or not there should've been SOME RESPONSE....very poor policy...not responding to customer problems.

Wow, I'm surprised by the negative reviews! Went during bar bingo and had great service. I had a burger and thought it was fantastic! I would recommend they get some happy hour specials going. It's a little overpriced.
