My work schedule found me in the area, and... even though the area is a little remote for my taste... I was happy to have found D&L Taco Gringo. Located a block off the highway, it's a great place to hit if you are travelling on I-94 and don't have a taste for a normal, run-of-the-mill fast food joint. I enjoyed the Taco Combo (fish taco's) with the Cucumber Salsa. Good stuff. The combo came with 2 flour tortilla fried fish tacos (Cod fish, I think?) with fantastically fresh tasting ingredients with a healthy drizzle of their "Taco Gringo Southwest Sauce." The combo also provided a healthy portion of white rice and a decent serving of chips. The chips were good (somewhere between homemade and real good bagged chips) and the rice was good (really, how do you screw up rice?). The southwest sauce IS pretty amazing. They give you an extra cup of sauce... seemingly, cuz they know you'll want more. The lady taking our order (very nice lady, by the way) informed me that the sauce is sold at some # of grocery stores (locally). The place, itself we found a little chilly... but the people prepping and cooking were all in shorts. Either I, from Chicago, don't appreciate real cold like in MN... or the kitchen area is a ton warmer than the eating area. My suggestions for this place would be to... 1. Warm up the place in the winter (maybe I was there on an off day?)... 2. Corn tortillas for the tacos... at least offer em! ... 3. Where's the refried beans?? :) 4. I didn't notice guac on the menu, either! That's all I got. Can't be too picky, though. This place was tastey... the people were nice... and it had a great location. Other than my propensity to over utilize parenthesis... I hope you enjoyed my review. Thanks, fellow Yelp'ers for helping me find this fine fast dining establishment.

Quick stop on the way to UND. Always prefer an independent restaurant over a chain and this place does not disappoint. Southwest burrito was really good, and my husband had the chimichangas. Lots of food, but not too much meat in the chimis. Southwest sauce is pretty good, but do not expect heat with the "salsa with heat". There is hot sauce readily available. Will definitely stop next time we are going through.

Horrible food! Cold no taste, bad service and help. If you want puppy poop go to park and eat there instead.

Anothet good Mexican restaurant we visited 2 weeks ago. A small rather hidden eat-in or take out. Good for lunch. There are about 8 tables with chairs. The portions are decent. The menus are written on a board, so you have to get close to it. Our respect to the young servers and the cooks. We get back to it. The chairs are rather weak, so we had to sit careful down. But all in all, its worth a check-in.

Simple menu but amazing taste! The challupas are delicious. Select meals come with homemade tortilla chips and jasmine? rice. Don't be expecting an oversized platter dinner like other Mexican restaurants though as it is more like a fast food place, but their meals/combos are big enough in my opinion. They have a good homemade southwest sauce and salsas too! I have experienced them being closed before their posted time though.

Menu is confusing, portions were small, no corn tortillas. On the positive side, getting my food was super fast. I got a "large" salad and I'm leaving here super hungry. I would not eat here again. Make sure you ask for extra salsa... Also, as a suggestion for management- on the gluten free version of the taco salad, since you can't include a bowl, why don't you throw on some corn tortilla chips? They're naturally gluten free.

Mexican Food for Gringos: Simple Minnesota Mexican food, for those of you not familiar with Minn-Mex its similar to Tex-Mex with less spice and variety. This place gets props for using fresh ingredients, serving reasonable portion sizes, and charging fair prices. The element that puts this place over the top for most is their "Taco Gringo Sauce" which may cause you to start singing mariachi and scrounging for a Corona because of all of the MSG in it. (If you become addicted to the sauce they sell it by the bottle at the restaurant and local grocery stores.) Overall this is a quality place to stop and grab a quick bite to eat as there aren't many options in the area. However I can't quite get over the name, :-) only in Central Minnesota can you get away with calling a place "Gringo" and have people come in without hesitation.

My family of 5 decided to give Taco Gringo a try. In the rain we got out and walked up to the door. The employees were looking at us and shut off the lights at 8:04PM. The problem is on their website and right on the front door it clearly states open until 9PM! I would think an independent restaurant owner would welcome every customer they get. I will never try the place again. There is an absolutely excellent Burrito place in St Cloud that will continue to get my business instead of this place.

My hubby and I stopped here for a quick bite to eat on our way up to the cabin. This place is a nice change of pace from the typical highway fast food joints. I ordered two chicken tacos and thought they were decent. Each taco is about $3. I thought the chicken was pretty good and flavorful. Each taco comes with lettuce, cheese, their special sauce and choice of salsa. I thought the corn and black bean salsa left a little to be desired. My hubby ordered the taco combo which came with two tacos, rice and chips. He got beef tacos, and I thought the chicken was a lot better. The beef seemed pretty bland. I would recommend skipping the combo since it just comes with plain white rice and tortilla chips. You don't even get extra salsa for the chips. Overall, this place was OK, but I'm not sure I would stop back.

Love the food at Taco Gringo! It's a light, healthy option instead of all the greasy fast food places.

On my way up north over the weekend, we took an alternative route on 94 to 10, rather than the usual 169 way. We were hungry so decided to give Taco Gringo a try. I had the fajita burrito. My group also got some quesadillas and tostadas. It was definitely a great alternative to the other fast foods around the exit. But I wouldnt go out of my way and take the alternative route again just to have it.

Okay, so about a dozen friends and I were on a road trip two years ago, and we were starving, and we didn't want chain-food, so we stopped here. Today, two years later, I just ate there for the... sixth time? I think over half my original group has been back multiple times, as most of us loved it. I try to rate things based on what they're trying to be. This place is trying (I think) to be a casual walk-in fast food place with fresh and healthy Mexican/American menu items. It's not trying to be authentic Mexican, nor is it competing with Taco Bell. It is what it is; a locally-owned joint that's nice to walk into and have a quick bite of Mexican-styled food without spending too much money. On that level, I say it more than succeeds (hence my five-star rating). Of what I've had so far, the fish tacos are my favorite. They give you a choice of several salsas (cucumber, mild, hot, black bean and corn). My fave is the hot salsa. They also put this tasty southwestern sauce on everything. It's sour-creamy/hot saucy mixture that adds a good.... I dunno... southern-style chicken finger flare to it (a' la Abner's Chicken Fingers in Oxford, MS, anyone?). They have several signs up about their choices in ingredients which lead me to believe the owners are health-conscious. That, and the food tastes healthy. (Did I mention I'm health conscious in my food choices?) So, if you want a grease pit go elsewhere. Obviously, this place is in a small town, far from the twin cities (maybe not worth making a trip to Clearwater), but I can say, without question, that if you are nearby, it's worth a stop for some non-fast-food-tasting fast food. Oh, and the owner was really nice. So were her employees. Let's keep them in business, yelpers.

Thanks Yelp for another great find. I had the Fish tacos with cucumber salsa and pico de gallo. Yum! Just a heads-up they put the Southwest sauce on everything, so if you are a lactard- be sure you let them know and get the sauce on the side;-)

I was really pleased with this place. I've had some 'knock-off' Chipotle in the past and it always seems to disappoint. This however was unique and on par. They have a larger menu. The burrito was filling. They served it with a few chips and some of their own dipping sauce that was really good. Probably the best 'fast food' in this small town.

Clean, Healthy, fast, Friendly! I loved the Southwest Sauce so much that I started buying it at Coborns, for everything I make at home! And I can't wait until I get to purchase Taco Gringo vouchers on Dealchicken.com !

This is right off the Clearwater & I-94 exit that we take to get over to Highway 10. Small place, fast food style, you walk up submit your order and the deliver it to your table when it's ready. The kids both ordered the Chicken Quesadilla's, I had the steak Chimichanga. The steak Chimi comes with rice and beans filled with your choice of steak, chicken, or beef. Surrounded by lettuce and rice with your preference of salsa on the side covered in a pretty nummy Southwest sauce. A little under fried in 'Trans fat free' oil, I mean if I am going to eat something fried, it should taste fried and be brown when it comes out. It was a slightly crispy but, white, not saying it was bad, just saying it was acceptable. Any fried meal you can walk away from is a good meal. The kids chicken Quesadilla's were just great and come with both Sour Cream and Southwest dipping sauces. Given the food choices in this area if you take the shortcut (I-94 & Hwy 24 to get over to Hwy 10), I'd say stop and give it a try. Something different. I will say it is good Mexican given the location outside the metro area. Oh the homemade chip's are awesome!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
