Looks are decieving. The exterior does not do this place justice. The food is great, inside is comfortable and both me and everyone with me were inpressed. Cost of food is cheap but very good. Thumbs up keep up good work.

I've lived in Bloomington within a half-mile of Shanytown for over 20 years and I've realized after all these years, I've haven't given the place the attention it deserves. Shanytown is an old hole-in-the-wall somewhat rustic and rikity in its own ways, and that's what makes it a great "hideout" where you can walk in not knowing anyone, but feel like you could all just break out and have a great time over some beers and burgers. Yes, the nearby Sports Page is much bigger and a newer (since remodeling) environment. But, Shanytown burgers are seasoned and have better flavor, and in my opinion just a better all-around burger, plus you can get tator tots...and Cajun tots at that! Shanytown is a small place but they keep busy and that says a lot. Don't let the flimsy screen door at the entrance fool you. Go, and enjoy a great burger and a few beers. Don't forget some tots!

This is good dive bar not too far from the over-priced Mall of America area. It looks kind of rough from the outside but is much better on the inside. (There was literally a pointy bearded biker smoking a cigar outside the night that I was there.) Fast friendly service. Reasonably priced beer and bar food. I could hang out there and will be back for sure. It's a 4 star dive bar. Same food in a nicer setting would only earn it 3.

This is what a hole in the wall should be. Great burgers - no dry hockey pucks here! Kind of funny because they bill themselves as having "gourmet burgers", and while they do have a lot of interesting choices - this is definitely not a gourmet ambience. This is...the place that every neighborhood needs and where people go to enjoy themselves (and not to "be seen"). Fries are pretty good, and they have great deals on beer. What more could you want?

We were waiting for some work to be done on some skis and sought out the Yelpers. Found this place to not be a brand and the only complaint was the wife feeling the neighborhood was not right. I insisted with the reviews and found that once you crack the door everything is okey dokie. Food was as advertised and expected. almost too fast on the delivery of the requested food and taste was perfect. Two thumbs up and will go back if ever up in this neck of the woods. Brent was working his second week and did a great job. Thanks guys.

Glad this place was recommended. Had the Reuben Burger (the special) and it was great! Also tried the Shanty Burger, also good. Waitstaff was friendly & attentive.

This place is the best by the time I checked in yelp my food was ready!! This waitress is freaking Awesome seriously.

I've heard about how great the burgers were. Aye there yesterday for nye and I don't think I would visit it again. The service was extremely slow but that could have been due to it being nye. There was only one waitress for the 30 tables or so they have, one bartender, and maybe just one cook. The walls and tables could use a good washing :/ Food was ok. I had the shanty burger and It didn't stand out for me. The guacamole in it made it very messy.

Wow, just left this establishment and this was our second time being there. The first time was a great experience and their food is AWESOME, BUT we had the same waitress as last time and I am shocked by the unprofessional attitude she had. I understand you might be the only waitress, work In a dive bar, getting minimum wage, but that does not give you an excuse to complain about your job, act annoyed because of the customers that are paying you for service on top of your job and then get mad when we order more items after you tried rushing us out. Should we have sat at the bar to begin with? What happened to getting good service at restaurants anymore? This was a place I could of seen us really making our "spot" but really hard when we are being rushed out and given the evil eye for ordering more. Ugh!!! Ps. GREAT FOOD AND DRINK PRICES!!!!

Stopped on Saturday for a try. Had not been there in 30 years or so. Two workers on duty and place was about 1/3 full. Bartender seemed overwhelmed with her 5 customers at the bar. Waitress ignored us as see seemed to run in circles passing out checks. We waited about 15 minutes without any acknowledgement from wait staff. 3 people came in and sat at table next to us...surprise the waitress finally comes over but waits on them. Yup you guessed it we left! Now I know why it has been so long since we had stopped there. If the owner watches this site they should get the message to train the help or better yet replace it. Place seemed to be a great little joint as you walked in.

Great local pub! Fantastic burger -- cooked the way you like. Have the sweet potato fries! Great people and atmosphere. Not far from the MSP airport if you have a long lay over.

  • Paul R.

It's listed as a "dive bar" but I can assure you (outside of happy hour) these are not dive bar drink prices. Still a neat place with friendly staff, you'll have fun. Just grab an extra 20 spot at the ATM.

I was recently in here for a softball fundraiser. The specials were good and the bartenders were awesome. Our waitress was non-existent. I had the mushroom burger and was alright. Half way through, I are without the bun to taste the burger.

Yes, Shantytown has great burgers and cheese curds. Yes, the wait staff is a little overwhelmed. Yes, there's about six parking spaces out front (not joking). Yes, you still have to come try it out. I wouldn't get too creative with the order - stick to what they do best. Any burgers, tots (props for good seasoned sour cream), and cheese curds. Try anything else at your own risk.

  • Eric H.

Excellent burgers, could use a bigger beer selection tho. Good happy hour, $2 rails & bottles.

  • Andy L.

Stopped here a few times now. Pitcher of beer and a bucket of wings for $15 fed 2 people and still had wings left!! Burgers are AMAZING on the pub standards. Great with a tall beer! All in all... Great place, awesome people, and prices were low for what you get!

Great locally owned business with awesome bar food. Can't go wrong with any place that serves tater tots and seasoned sour cream. Shantytown is known for their burgers and you will never be disappointed with any of them. The Shanty burger is popular with bacon and guacamole on it. They always have drink specials most nights of the week (including $1 beers). Be sure to stop in and check it out and support a local business/institution.

  • Laura H.

Shantytown is awesome! Great food and great staff. Karaoke on Saturday nights! The owner Laura is a sexy rocker/country/fun chick and makes everyone feel welcome in her bar. Check it out.

Great little hidden gem. Ive been here tons of times. Love getting the battered mushrooms! Burgers are great. You need to get the seasoned dip for your fris! Cheap. Only complaint would be they get really busy and are usually short staffed :( Tip that server well shes working her butt off!

  • Jill D.

This place is a dive-bar and burger joint, and it makes no apologies. Without venturing out to the terrifying mall, this is the BEST food in Bloomington. The burgers are always cooked perfectly, the tater tots are basic but yummy, and the prices are good. I bring out-of-town friends to Shantytown when they are hungry, and we always love it. The service can be slow, but if you don't come in expecting to be treated like a queen, or when you are in a hurry, I promise you'll love it. Shantyburger + Blue Moon = Happiness. I think I'll go there tonight actually.

It's my neighborhood bar! $1.00 beers on Wednesday nights, great Happy Hour Monday - Friday until 6:30 and then after 9:00 more daily specials. Food is great and servers are awesome!

  • Cari S.

A tiny little gem! This is one of my favorite places to get a burger and a beer! It's small with a friendly vibe. The place is a little bit hidden, but once you find it you won't be disappointed! My girlfriend and I like to get two different burgers and share them, I can tell you that I have yet to be upset with any of the choices we've made. I love this place!

    (5)
  • Z J.

I don't go here for the food...I've tried an appetizer and could tell it was just frozen stuff thrown in the fryer. However. you can't beat $2 domestics and karaoke on Saturday night. There aren't many singers so you get up there 4-5 times. People are fairly friendly, a real mix of folks from the neighborhood and others who just happened upon the place.

  • Weasy L.

This is a great place to come for great food at an excellent price. Missy was an exception waitress and made sure that everything was ok. I defiantly will be coming back here again! You can't go wrong!

Best hidden hole-in-the-wall that Bloomington has to offer. Food is great, there are beer specials throughout the week, friendly staff, and they support local softball leagues, etc.

  • Peter Peterman H.

Delicious food! I got the Reuben sandwich. Come on out for speedy service with a big smile. The restaurant looks pretty shady from the outside but don't be deceived, this place gets pretty busy over the lunch hour and in the evenings. I don't live around these parts so I was pleasantly surprised by the service also.

Came in from Chicago [Go Hawks].....found this place on Yelp. Had burgers, cheese curds and steak sandwiches. I wish this place was back home. Just awesome food. Not really a dive just a local bar. Family friendly, parking is scarce but worth it. Nice people and awesome food...going back tomorrow. Went here again.....delicious food and exceptional service.

Best bar in all of Bloomington! The owner Laura is the shit! You suck if you think otherwise!

  • Kristen B.

The Shantytown Bar and Grill is the best kept secret in Bloomington. The food is fantastic and very reasonably priced. Excellent tater tots. Try them with fresh made ranch dipping sauce or seasoned sour cream. The Shanty burger is also a favorite. Give Shantytown a try. You won't be disappointed.

If you are trying to hide from the suburbs while you are in the suburbs, shantytown is the place to do it! Started up to serve hungry factory workers, this oasis will fill your tummy with delicious fried goodness, beer and whiskey. Jukebox, wooden boothes and servers who remember you. Highly rated.

I was extremely disappointed with my visit and 90% of it was service. After reading these glowing reviews and a friend recommending it to me I was anxious to go. 8 of us went for lunch and were immediately greeted with "You guys should have come here earlier. You're better off coming before 11 or after 1." It was lunch time...noon... and I couldn't believe that how 8 patrons in professional garb were greeted at the door by the waitress. We brushed it off and took our chances, because the friend of mine insisted the food and prices were worth it. Going out in a group we don't always expect to be seated at the same table and so we were separated into two booths relatively near each other. We sat down at the same time, but my booth (luckily) ordered first. The second booth didn't get their order down until after we had already received our food 35 minutes later. She didn't come anywhere near our area before then. I asked for a refill 4 different times and never received one. When we asked for our bill she said semi-jokingly, "what? Do you think that's my job?" The other booth which got their order late received their check. After I asked a second time for the check she brought it... 10 minutes later. This excursion lasted 2 hours... for a lunch. It was unbelievable. The price and food wasn't worth the terrible service. I can definitely say that none of the 8 of us including my friend who raved about the place will be going back.

They have pretty good happy hours, unfortunately I'm never there when they're going on. Their burgers are really good. Actually, I've never had anything bad from shantytown. The place looks really small from the outside, but it's a lot bigger inside than you'd expect. That being said, if the parking lot is full my suggestion is to just keep driving by. Being a local, I've found several spots open in the lot before only to find out there's not one open seat in the whole place. My recommendation is the chili cheeseburger or the shroom burger. With tots. And a $2.50 PBR tallboy.

A few weeks ago I was on a hamburg hunt, and read about here. It was a solid burger, and it seemed thicker than most. A group came in after me and someone mentioned the french dip is very good. They do have a nice variety of sandwiches, etc, so they may be worth trying. I like how one side is very close to the kitchen window. I did pay attention to the rootbeer reviews, and it's a smart move to order it if you don't drink. Not only is the glass frosty, but you get pieces of frost while you're drinking it. Sometimes you may be in the mood for an out of the way neighborhood place like this.

Cute dive bar in Bloomington. Liked the atmosphere and the food was pretty good. Had a burger and chips. Definitely will be back to try more on the menu. Overall very pleased with our visit.

Tucked away between residential & industrial bloomington, with a cabin bar in the woods feel, and a full parking lot-I thought this would be a great place for a bite. We started off with cheesecurds, they were $7. They were served in a spiral cone, similar to those that green mill uses for their appetizers. I wouldn't call them cheesecurds, more like mini cheese sticks. I could buy better quality from the grocery store. Their sandwiches only come with chips, if you want fries or onion rings its additional $1.50+, and they aren't cheap to begin with, as you might suspect from the looks of this place. By the way there were only stick fries, flavorless cardboard stalks (steak fries were not an option) The buns on the burgers were exactly the kind you get for a buck at the store, and served cold. I had the chili burger, topped with chili, the burger was hot, but the chili was cold...yum cold beans-yeah disgusting! The chicken club had more lettuce than chicken. This place was less than desirable, since the food is worse than what you can get in a cafeteria. And service would rather keep in the conversation at the bar than be attentive to their tables.

  • Brittany N.

Yikes this place was bad! Bland burgers put on a flat top does not equal deliciousness. The fries were similar to those you'd get at McDonald's. And oh yeah, have you ever had a server turn their back and walk away from you WHILE you're asking for something...more than once in an hour? I have! It doesn't make for a very pleasant evening. To add insult to injury, I was walking by the kitchen to use the restroom and heard her talking shit about our table to the cook. There were five us, we all work or have worked in the restaurant industry and just wanted some beer and burgers. I read the reviews on this site and thought my friends and I would give it a try...our kind of joint. Low key, good food, easy going service. I can put up with lacking or even horrible service for good food. But with this place there was no trade off. Everything sucked. Too bad, I really wanted to like this place.

I've had much better...... Shantytown is very over rated, and has allot of nerve putting 'gourmet burgers' on the front of this restaurant. There was NO TASTE in my burger and the buns lacked flavor as well. The 'tots' were ok...again nothing great. This shanty is not worth a return visit. Service was great and helpful!!!

  • Cory R.

This is my kind of place - small, unassuming bar in an unassuming location with some tasty burgers. They have a surprising array of options, including one burger that features cactus. The tater tots are not special - just plain old tater tots. The cheese curds are really more like deep fried cheddar cheese balls served with ranch dressing. This is worth the trip for local flavor - also I was pleasantly surprised to see Newcastle on tap.

Stopped in last week for dinner with the family for the first time. Heard about this place from Bloomington friends and was described as a hidden gem. It's hidden, yes, but I wouldn't exactly call it a "gem". However, 3 stars to me means it's a place I would return to and I will describe why. First, the food was just OK. 3 of us ordered three different burgers with the infamous tater tots. The burger itself was barely average. Meat was unimpressive and the bun was white wonderbread-ish. The tater tots were good but not great. My other son ordered the chicken fingers and fries. Both were good as bar food goes. Sounds like a 2 star review huh? Well, the service was great. A very engaging, helpful and attentive waitress. And the happy hour value was a bonus (two dollar domestics and rails). Not overpriced cold ones and the great service add a star. That is why I would return. The menu has a large choice of chicken sandwiches. Will try one of those next time (with a cold one, of course).

A hidden gem! Burgers are de-lish, if you're a tater tot fan (if you're from Minnesota who isn't...Tater Tot Hotdish anyone?), you'll enjoy them here instead of the usual french fries. The Shanty Town burger is my favorite...hey, I have a thing for guacamole! Service here has been hit or miss for me, depends on the server. Parking lot is very small, watch where you park on the street! It can get crowded during lunch time.

    (4)
  • John E.

Just a small local neighborhood bar with great Bergers & sandwiches. Okay, getting the right wait staff is very important. if you can get to the place before 5 PM there is a good chance to get a parking spot, otherwise pick a street spot to park (very small & tight park lot). Lots of booths and large tables for groups of people. Great selection of bergers, some are very orginal! Of course the beer is always cold in the bottle or draft.

Shantytown has my 2nd favorite hamburger in the Twin Cities, just after the 5-8 Club, and is a great summer heat escape, one of the few places with adequte air conditioning anymore, you can also order beverages in frosty mugs which is very refreshing. This place makes feel like I'm on a weekend getaway to the North Shore. Shantytown is one of the nicest neighborhood bars I've yet seen in the South Metro, I highly recommend coming here

    (5)
  • Mike B.

This place is great! They have great great GREAT pub food, great drink specials, and an amazing atmosphere! They really make you feel like you're one of the family, and the weekends are always hopping! Bloomington's hidden treasure!

Went here for the first time on a Wednesday night post-softball with a bunch of regulars. $2 bottles and really good bar food in a really casual atmosphere. The bartender made good drinks and was fast, plus she was funny and made good conversation with all the patrons (aka talked shit with them - they had it coming! - and then took some shots with them). The jukebox was solid, with a good mix of 70s and 80s rock/hair metal and some country, along with a bunch of random discs of music you'd expect to hear. If I lived back in the area again or went to softball more often, I'm pretty sure I would become a regular as well, its just too inviting, tasty, and affordable to say no. One tip - don't park on the street, you'll probably get a ticket or a tow. There is parking in a bunch of lots in front of all the neighboring businesses that seemed to be legit.

  • Raja V.

Really great burgers and tater tots. Very unassuming place - actually looks kind of sketchy from the outside. But it's a true neighborhood joint.

  • Rina E.

This place is KNOWN for thier fantastic Tater tots! They should also be known for their burgers, the Shanty burger is one of my personal faves, also they have wonderful soups, sandwiches, and Bloody's. Their Beer is cold, and the service is great every time we're there! I'm sure the normal passer-byes would not even know this place is right in the heart of the industrial area of Bloomington, but There it is screaming for you to enjoy a burger and a beer with TATER-TOTS that are super crispy, and not greasy. The chili is awesome too! Play the jukebox, and be astonished by the food!

  • Debbie C.

A friend of mine brought me to this place talking about their burgers and tots. When I walked in a was a little surprised how packed the place was and that the kitchen is in the middle of the restaurant with windows on both sides so you can see what and how they are cooking you food. So we got some cheese curds which were awesome and came with ranch dressing which really was a nice touch. So I ordered the California burger and tots and it was cooked just like I ordered it and the tots were pretty amazing! Since then I have brought a few co-workers there, family and friends and they all say that they enjoy it and wish they would have known about this place before. Also their were a finalist at the Bloomington Diamond Service Awards this year, so I think the work is really starting to get out about this place. Darn it now it's going to be even more hard to get a table, oh well glad to help out a local business owner :)

I am in awe of our experience at Shantytown tonight - and NOT in a good way!! We are regulars at this place that serves wonderful burgers and other food! Tonight we went on one of our weekly visits to get a beer and burger and witnessed a horrifying situation. The bartender/owner began and continued to argue with a customer eating at the bar who reached for a bottle of Heinz 57 that was about 6 inches from him. Naturally thinking it was there for his use with his meal. How could you not think that - it was sitting right there on the bar??!! The bartender/owner proceeded to let him know that this was "her station" and was not for him to use and that if he wanted something he should have asked her for it. CRAZY!! He proceeded to argue with her - which was understandable due to the fact that it was hard to believe she was scolding him for using what was readily there for customers on the bar. She continued to argue with him making a scene for the whole bar to witness - it was nothing but AWKWARD. While this was happening we got our food - which was good so compliments to the cook - but our service was APPALLING!! Our waitress was more interested in the argument than providing good service to us and I had to stand up to get her attention - eventually - to get beverage refills. And after asking for our tab she proceeded to sit down and eat dinner until we finally went to the bar and asked for it. She never once apologized! RUDE!! The bartender/owner continued to condescend and argue with this customer and then one of the servers went to the jukebox and played a song that continually played the lyrics "he's an a**hole". This only aggravated the situation and frankly was completely wrong on behalf of the bar employees and owner!! WRONG!! This customer was embarrassed and frustrated and left. I feel so bad for him!! What a horrible way to treat him - a customer. Witnessing this whole situation was awkward and horrible! We used to be regulars here but will definitely think twice before giving them our patronage next time!

Admittedly I haven't eaten here in 7 years, but Shanty Town (unless things have changed dramatically) was the best burger I ever had in the Twin Cities. As a bonus I used to live just a few miles away. It's hidden away by the railroad tracks on a quiet street with small businesses on one side and residences on the other. It's dark inside, I've never seen it crowded, and has a very dive-y vibe - but the burgers! Oh, the burgers! They have pages and pages of different varieties but they're all exquisite. Plus they have all your favorite sides, sodas, malts, shakes, etc. There are some games to keep the kids occupied and they do serve beer... I hope to return to Bloomington to feast again at the Shantytown Grill.

  • Michelle K.

Huge variety of burgers, and all have been tasty. It is a pleasant place - not too crowded generally, but crowded enough you know that they are going through the product. Good selections of deep-fried side items - especially if you like good old-fashioned tator tots.
