I've been coming here since I moved to Ypsi in 2007 and I love it. Even after I've moved away, this is the one place I eat when I'm back to visit. Probably my favorite Mexican restaurant ever. Staff is fun and food is fast and great.

I had a taste for Tacos and remembered seeing this place on a regular basis when I have shopped at a nearby Kroger. I decided to stop in for a a carryout. I was pleasantly surprised with the inside. It is colorful, has a bar and a broad menu. I ordered 3 Ala-Cart tacos. 2 beef and one chicken. When the order arrived it came with chips on the side. The hard shell tacos were a bit soggy when I got home but they are probably best eaten when made. The chips where also not as I expected. It was if they were sitting around for a while. There was not much of a fresh taste to them. The salsa was excellent and was the best part of the meal. I will visit again and next time sit down for another try. I am also curious about the Margaritas and Fish tacos.

My local Mexican joint. A good place for lunch and dinner deals. A large selection of items on the menu, and cheap drinks. I've come here many times for a quick bite if me and the lady don't want to travel outside of the township, and also want some good Mexican food. The drinks have a good amount of alcohol, so you aren't getting fake margaritas. Service here is on the mark, haven't had a bad experience. Check it out!

My husband and kids like this spot a lot better than I do. The people are friendly and the service is good. I usually order a combination of enchiladas and tacos. I am not a fan of the tamales or chimichangas. I am also not a fan of the brown sauce that they put on a lot of the items. Perhaps its too authentic for me.

Great food...a bit pricey ($10 avg per dish) but worth it. You won't be disappointed.

The atmosphere is quite festive-looking and the decor is lively and colorful. The proportions are pretty large and satisfying and seem fitting for the price. I used to quite like the food here, but it depends on what you order. The sides, including the rice and beans, while filling, don't make you leave feeling great. The meat/steak is dry and hard and not tender at all. Service is good, and food comes out pretty quickly. Waiters are friendly but not quite interactive as you would wish. A good place to come a few times but not someplace that keeps you coming back repeatedly.

I am really amazed by the bad reviews on service because I think the service is VERY good. I used to live 2 miles away so I've been there a lot since it first opened. The owner / manager is a younger guy who is always working and singing. (Forgot his name) He'd see me walk in and right away, I'd have a tall draft Dos Equis and a shot of his home brand of tequila put down in front of me. So give 'em a chance. The food is good. Nothing to knock your socks off. Just good and fresh. Chile Relleño Is tasty but ask to drain it first. Nachos Santa Fe is a lot for several people. If ordering for yourself, there is a smaller version. Just ask. Chimichangas are ok but got smaller recently. Their burritos are about four pounds. Plan on left overs. So skip worrying about reviews on service. Yes, on Cinco de Mayo they are busy. So are all Mexican restaurants. Maybe you have to carry your check to the counter to pay. Big deal. So does the Coney Island Just go with the flow and enjoy.

Dined in twice, carried out once. The dining room is cute, very festive. Service is pretty fast. The portions are plentiful & satisfying, but not out of this world. The sides (beans, rice) aren't very flavorful, but the main dishes I've tried are usually well seasoned and tasty. Carry out was less successful. We complained about our order not being packed correctly and were rudely told "this isn't taco bell" as they tried to make excuses for how we were mistaken about items missing from the package, even though they did oblige and correct the error. It was unnecessarily poor customer service and I'm not sure the quality of food warrants another visit, but it is still a fun place in the neighborhood for a margarita.

Excellent food, service and atmosphere! They've had the same staff all five years we've been going there. Often the staff is singing along to the music in the background. Awesome A+

This is my second time here, and both times we got the worst service. I don't know why, but it feels like they're understaffed. Our meal was drought-ridden as a Mexican desert. We asked for water three times (twice with our waiter and once with another) and finally got it with our bill. The food is ok. Not great, but better than frozen microwave burritos. If you like tamales as much as me, don't order them here. They are barely passable as one of the best Mexican dishes. Here, they smother them with sauce, cheese, and beef. Unless you can retain water like a camel, don't come here.

These guys have the best non-taqueria Mexican food in town. Long menu, lots of options, and everything is very consistent. I like the Enchiladas Poblanas with Mole sauce.

This is a great place to come on a lazy afternoon or evening for margaritas and chips & salsa. Their jumbo margarita is massive! Better to have a giant, Wayne's World-esque drink vs. several small ones. I really don't like their food though : / I've tried the cheese enchiladas, the juevos rancheros, and one of their combination plates and was disappointed every time. The flavors weren't anything to get excited about and the plates just looked kind of messy and carelessly slopped together. It's not awful, but I wouldn't come here for anything other than the margaritas.

I used to like this place, I really did. It had been years since we last made our way over for what I remember as really good Mexican food. I think the decor of the restaurant is neat, with the booths covered overhead with terracotta roof tiles creating a nice atmosphere. We decided to stop in for old times sake, and were disappointed when the food we had was just not very good. I had one of the combo plates, while my wife had the chile relleno, and my daughter has a chicken soft taco. All three of us agreed that the food was boring, bland, and not like it once was. That's a shame.

I am not a fan of La Fuente. I have tried it a couple times now. Their salsa is too smoky tasting and the burritos have very non traditional items in them. They are also a bit pricey for a Mexican restaurant.

  • John A.

The food is...ok. Not great, especially given that there is a much better place, Los Amigos, not too far from here. Do NOT order carryout. I've ordered carryout from La Fuente 3 times and more order has been screwed up each time. Not to sound racist (and the aforementioned Los Amigos does not have this problem) but whoever they have answering the phones neither understands or speaks English very well. And when I went in to pick up the order, he argued with me each time. The staff at La Fuente is just very substandard. Again, the food is not terrible. Not good, but not terrible either. But the lack of good service just makes it not worth the trip.

Had a late lunch last week and was very impressed. I eat in Mexican Town in Detroit quite often, but this is some of the best Mexican food I have ever had. The menu full of great Mexican dishes. The fresh salsa and hot chips served before your meal is delicious. We ordered the handmade Guacamole Dip and were eqully satisfied. I ordered the Chile Relleno combintion with Guacamole Salad, Beans and a Taco. The service was excellant and the experience was very enjoyable. We will be back!

  • Brian L.

I have eaten here several times, and most times the food has been very good. My last experience was not as good, but every restaurant has an off day, right? I ordered the California burrito, which I usually order. For some reason, it just didn't seem right... the flavors were off. The chips were fresh, as was the salsa. I like my salsa a little chunky, theirs is more liquid. I will be back, and if they food isn't as good as usual, I will be changing my rating.

Huge menu, okay atmosphere, and mediocre service. The food is good to excellent, depending on what you order. Nice selection of beer, also.

This place is pretty good. Not exactly an "authentic" mexican place but it is good. I have been here many times and always been happy. They do have many signature dishes but I always seem to fall back to one of the many combo plates that they offer. The waitstaff are a good time, always singing and dancing around the place and in a great mood. They also should be noted for their 3 sizes of Margaritas. The Jumbo is awesome as it is 42 oz!.

We've eaten here many times and have generally left happy. The food is a bit better than the typical corner Mexican joint and the prices reflect that too. It's not crazy expensive but it's not cheap either. Chips come out super fast with salsa that I love (it's sometimes warm and often has a great oniony flavor). I've had their large super burritos and they've all tasted great and are super-filling. The version with chorizo is especially good if you like mildly spicy food. The loaded chips are good and they're substantial enough for a main course. They have a few non-traditional dishes (at least for Americanized Mexican places) like potatoes with chicken and chicken or beef skewers that are delicious. And the fajitas have always been great too. The restaurant is typically clean. We've always been seated quickly and the service has been fine. We'll be back again and again

Lovely service, spotlessly clean and rather kitchy/cute interior, but the food is NOT what I think of when I think "Mexican Food" or even "Tex-Mex" or "Cali-Mex". Essentially heavily Americanized "Mexican" cafeteria food...i.e., generally bad. - Sugary-sweet sauces, heavy on the cinnamon/allspice. - Paste-like ground beef...was scary. - Chicken was decent, not overly-processed and seasoned reasonably. - Guacamole was decent. - Did not taste of chilis, or cumin, or lime, or ancho, or anything recognizably Mexican. - Cups of iceburg lettuce over top of everything, sugary sauce, gloppy cheese. The staff were all Mexican/South American - I almost asked them what THEY were having for dinner, as I doubt it was anything from the menu. I was SO hungry when we arrived - I could have almost killed for a decent, simple chorizo/egg in a corn tortilla, a braised tongue taco, or really anything besides what we got. *SIGH* If you like minimal seasoning, tons of cheese, sauce, iceburg lettuce, and gigantic bland watery Margaritas, this will likely fit the bill.

This place is pretty good. The decor is colorful and the restaurant is clean. Not truly authentic Mexican, but they have tasty meals at great prices. You will definitely bring some home! The margarita's are huge and service has always been prompt and attentive. My kids love the refried beans and that beats french fries any day!

  • Verdi E.

I always thought the food here was good. On the other hand, the service is horrible. It is by far the worst service I have received in years. It wasn't one person. Three people were rude, unhelpful, and acted like I was a burden rather than a privilege or guest. I was given rude looks by our waiter, and disrespectful treatment by the manager. Every request I made was responded to with a lack of urgency. The manager tried to "make jokes" by telling us our food would take a long time, and that they don't offer to-go-boxes, with a straight face. I don't plan on going back here.

I wanted to be really wowed by this place, not certain why. Fact is, I'm not! It's just OK! We were here last evening and the entire place was cold. Cold enough to put a winter coat back on. They do not have a happy hour here. They do have some specials on drinks/beers on certain days. One of which was a Cuervo Margarita made with a Corona beer in it. WTF?We settled on a carafe of house made sangria. This was supposed to give "more than two glasses". It did not. It was OK and I would not order it again. Once is enough. I ordered one of the food specails which consisted of a beef taco, a chile relleno and a tostada. The relleno was very good and the poblano was hot, not the usual mild that is normally served. The beef taco and tostada were good, not great and most certainly not excellent. My S.O. stated that his order was good but not memorable. Then there's the pricing issue. A tad high for mexican cuisine. They are located in a strip mall perhaps a high rent one. Then there is the issue of the overhead music. So loud that we had to shout even though we were sitting next to one another. I would not choose to return here. There are too many other places more conducive to my preference that I would rather patronize.

I would've given this place 2.5 stars, maybe even 3 stars, but from my experience, the service brings it way down to a 1. What is good about this place are the chips (the nacho plates were all right, but I really enjoy the chips themselves) and the margaritas. Let me begin by noting that the first time we had come here was with my boyfriend's mother and her friend. A couple of the waiters continuing to hit on her friend. Her friend was simply just being polite. When they went to cash out, two waiters said to my boyfriend's mom, "the meal is on us, as long as you bring her back." As for my experience the other day, the waiter was seemingly nice at first. I just thought it was his personality not to smile. He delivered our check to our table, and we then sat there for 30 minutes waiting for him to take our credit card. We made eye contact with him multiple times, and he would continue to avoid us. We had noticed that he had taken the check up to be cashed out from the older couple behind us. Finally we asked another waiter what the deal was, and he said sometimes you pay up front, sometimes you pay at the booth. We went up to the counter (where our waiter was) who cashed us out, and we asked how we know when to pay up front or at the booth. He said, "Depends on how busy we are" and that was it. Soo... if you're busy, you take the card? Or I bring it up to you? Wasn't so sure. He was extremely curt and rude, and I regret even giving him any tip at all. The only reason I can think of him taking the older couple's check, is that their bill must've been quite large. I would HIGHLY suggest La Casita or Pacific Beach Burrito over this place, both on Washtenaw in Ypsi. Much more authentic Mexican fare, and much nicer (and appropriate) staff!

Update: I originally reviewed this last year. I've been back a couple times more recently and have had much better service experiences. Try the Super California Burrito, delicious and big enough for 3 meals. I'd give the food a three or four star rating - especially the chiles rellenos. But the service is awful! We've stopped going to La Fuentes because I'm always pissed when we leave.

I've been to La Fuente twice and here's the thing about it: they have amazing chips & salsa. The chips taste like fresh corn taco shells that have been cut into the shape of tortilla chips. They're extremely crunchy and extremely good. The salsa won't blow your mind but it compliments the flavorful chips rather well. I can go to La Fuente and order a Dr. Pepper and just munch on the chips & salsa, and I'll be in hog heaven. They're that good! But the two times I'e been there, I have actually ordered dinner plates and that's why I've come away disappointed. I've sampled their chicken and beef tacos, a bean burrito, and tried to eat some kind of chalupa thing. I wouldn't say that the food is greasy, but they do load up everything with cheese. Sprinkled cheese, melted cheese, cheese sauce, etc. If you're even slightly lactose intolerant, then your stomach is gonna be in a whirl. Remember to bring the Lactaid! The second time I went there, I made sure to ask for no cheese. My only complaint then was that the corn taco shells weren't nearly as flavorful or crunchy as the chips themselves, which is kind a problem. They bordered on 'soggy' at times. The bean burrito was a decent size but I didn't feel like the bean paste inside was anything far removed from the bean burrito at Taco Bell. In an ideal world, La Fuente would have delicious and authentic-tasting Mexican food to go along with their awesome chips & salsa. Until that world arrives, though, I'll have to keep going back there as an excuse to guzzle Dr. Pepper and chomp down on their delicious chips. Here's a place where the real food is secondary.

This isn't an authentic Mexican restaurant per se, but it's still very tasty! I've tried an array of items on their menu and every single one is delicious. I think the salsa they give to you when you sit down isn't too hot, but just right. If I really want to spice it up there are couple of sauces on the table too which is nice. Their margaritas are wonderful! It's not too sweet, too fruity, or too heavy on the alcohol. It has a great balance. My only complaints are that the beans lack flavor, so I usually order them with a sauce like a bean enchilada. A few items can be slightly greasy too, but I love the little bit of grease, but not a lot of people do not. Service has good and bad days. We went today and service was pretty darn good, but we've got other days where it was excellent and some days were service was just bad. It can be slightly loud in there or other times very quiet, but I think the music is very unique and I quite like it. It's a bit on the pricey side for our budget for the quality, but it certainly doesn't stop me from going otherwise I'd go way more often. I'm not sure why the price range on Yelp shows $11+? A drink & a meal cost about $10 or less, which is what the general rule is "per person." Prices can be seen here: menupix.com/menudirector… The amount of food fills you up or you need a box to take home left overs so overall it's a great place, but not an absolute favorite.

I've had mixed luck at LaFuente. The first time I went there, I was amazed that they would charge $7 or more for a margarita, depending on what size you order. And then I saw the glass, and realized that was a lot of booze. It was strong, too. The second time, they got the order wrong- they didn't make it frozen as I'd requested, and it was weak. The food is good, but greasy. They claim to be "authentic" but it tastes just like the super cheesed-up Tex-Mex "Mexican" food I've had elsewhere. I would take friends who like Tex-Mex here, especially if they wanted a giant Margarita. It's not a bad place, but I've had better.

Alright, I had to wait a few hours after eating here to write this because I tried the 42 oz margarita. It's not the best mexican food. In fact it's pretty average. The chips are chips and the salsa is spicy tomato cilantro sauce. The prices are a little high for the what it is, but the whole experience wasn't too bad. (Can't say the same for the murals. Who thought murals were a good idea? Ever?) Had a stuffed poblano. Not even really stuffed and I was startled at how quickly the food arrived, which is a bad sign because it means that they didn't make it for you they had it made, put more sauce on it and heated it up. The wait staff was nice, but that's it. Let's just say, I'll come for the 42 oz margarita and go somewhere where there are native people eating the food for my poblanos.

First, realize that this menu is full of items that are not considered authentic Mexican fare. For crying out loud, it has a monster burrito type dish that screams of mere belly bulging as opposed to taste bud arousal. However, if you dig around, you can come across a couple of items that venture closer to authentic. I personally give a shout out to the carne asada that has treated me well on a couple occasions. On my last trip, we ordered a chile relleno and it was really good. To that end, one of the waiters gave us a compliment (I think?) because he noticed that we never order the American dishes. He was quite shy about saying anything but it was very funny. The service here is generally good and the noise levels are OK. It din can get a bit overwhelming during a Friday or Saturday dinner rush, but beyond that I've never had any particular problems there. La Fuente is a standard on our list not because it blows our socks off, but because we have experienced good consistency in service and food quality. Enjoy.

Overall it was good service with it being 5th of May. The rice and beans were not flavorful. Beans may have came out of the can. I had the fish tacos (the special) was good except there was too many onions and the tortillas fell apart. The chips and salsa were good. The guacamole needed the salsa and pepper added to it. Margaritas were fantastic. Not bad for the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area.

I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I really like La Fuente. They have a ton of options on the menu, a la carte or as combinations. My friends and I started going there in the afternoons after golfing, and it sort of stuck as a tradition. The food is really tasty, reasonably priced, and they give you as much salsa and as many fresh tortilla chips as you want. The waiters are very nice, and are very good about keeping water glasses filled. The atmosphere is really fun-- a little noisy sometimes, but there are quite a few secluded booths, so you don't feel like the crowd is in your business. They also have a full bar and serve some freaking enormous margaritas. I really like this place, despite not being a real lover of Mexican restaurants. Don't be put off by the fact that it's part of a strip mall, it's a cool place.

We love La Fuente, we live in Ann Arbor and often leave town just to come to La Fuente. We have a million closer options, but this is always our favorite. The food is great, the service is fantastic, and the drinks are big and strong. The owner is almost always at the cash register and a very gracious and sweet person. The waiters are probably my favorite waiters too. They are always attentive and sweet, they let you move as fast or slow as you like. Most Mexican food has been americanized to fit our tastes, but they do a great job balancing traditional and american mexican. The interior is adorable, they are constantly decorating and keeping things fresh. They put a lot of effort into the place and you can feel/see it. *Also, the waiters many times are singing songs in spanish while working and I love it. Its just a very cheerful place with tasty food!

Delicious salsa and cheese dip! My main dish was also incredible. I got a tamal and potato burrito. Fun friendly waiters also. Very nice evening spent here.

Food was fairly good, I enjoyed the atmosphere of the place, and I probably would have given them five stars if the waitstaff would have at least pretended to be happy. Most of them were sitting and chatting in a booth while we were there. I'll still go back when I am wanting more authentic Mexican though.

I live downriver and travel out to La Fuente anytime I feel like enjoying a good authentic Mexican meal. Staff is always very friendly and the food is always consistently prepared. Delicious!

Great place to be insulted by the neophyte staff who enjoy smiling at you while they use Spanish derogatories on their unwitting gringo patrons. Being well versed in Spanglish they were shocked when my retort to being addressed as "Cabrone" was less than cheerful. After sharing my story with all my coworkers I was informed of many similar experiences. Sad, because I really liked the food but will never return here.

I love the atmosphere at La Feunte. The staff is friendly, and fast! We visit this establishment frequently, and often get our food to go. The menu offers a lot of options for me and my wife, as well as our 2-year old. He loves Tacos and beans! Chips and Salsa are always overflowing, and we've never had a problem.

  • Tim B.

The service was excellent, the wait staff was very attentive and seem to enjoy their jobs. My wife loved the chicken in her enchiladas (just the right amount of spice) and the rest of the mixican dishes were very good -- although my son's steak wasn't on par (read: don't order the steak). The margarita was disappointing. It was served in a hot glass which quickly melted the ice and it was overpriced at $7 for the smallest portion (we didn't need a 12 oz serving). Overall it was still a good meal and we will return in the future.

I don't care for this place at all. I have tried this restaurant twice, both times I had the same reaction, "meh." The food was dull, bland, and just unappealing. However, I know some people who love it. Just depends on how much authenticity you want. It's like a sit-down Taco Bell to me. When I want really good authentic mexican food I go to Dos Pesos in Belleville, Mi.

  • Stephanie B.

Awesome chips, and awesome chorizo. I LOVE chorizo, and this was very satisfying. Service was so-so... not very friendly but gave you everything you needed. Very clean. I will go back because the quality of food was above average for a Michigan tex-mex joint.

    (4)
  • Diane H.

This is the go-to restaurant for my co-workers on special occasions (we work in Belleville). Part of the appeal is that the chips and salsa are excellent and addictive, the portions (especially the five-enchilada plate) are generous, the lunch combo specials are affordable, and one of the waiters likes to sing. The appeal for me personally is that, among the cheese-heavy dishes on the menu are some delightful and uncommon entrees like Pollo Sinalda, Pollo Yucatan, and a very nice Mole. I tend to avoid the dishes featuring ground beef, and the bizarre things like "Tostacheese," and stick to these tasty chicken dishes. Anyway, the menu is diverse enough to please both the Tex-Mex tastes of my co-workers and my more "authentic" bent, but the service can be very poor. Sometimes our party of five or six is treated to speedy and reliable service, and sometimes... not. The decor is cute and the place has always been very clean. Warning: the hot cheese dip is also addictive.

Went here for lunch and was impressed. The food was excellent and the service was good too. The food here is better than most of the standard chain mexican restaurants. Price was reasonable as well. I like there beef burrito, which was a decent size and mostly beef with a couple of tomatoes. I think the place would be better suited for lunch than dinner, but you would probably be fine either way.

La Fuente Mexican Restaurant is my families go to place when we want to go out and someplace near. Food, service, portion and value is good. I would classify the food as Americanized Mexican food, but my family likes it for the most part over authentic. Children food is cheap in price and large in portion.

Out of all the Mexican places in Ann Arbor and Ypsi, this is my favorite. Everytime we come here the place is hopping. The wait staff is very friendly and attentive to your table. Portions are huge and really fresh tasting. Everything I have ordered has never been greasy, then again I do not order deep fried items. Again, depending on what you order I thought the cheese to meal ratio was just fine. You can always request light cheese if you are particular...

I like this place. The atmosphere is nice and the service is really good, but we have only been there on off hours. I never liked guacamole and always ask for it to be left off. I received my meal and there was a huge mound of it on top of everything so I decided to give it a try. I have to say that I love, love, love their guacamole! The chips and salsa came out very quick, warm and very tasty! Some of the best salsa that I have tasted. I think the menu is a bit overwhelming because they offer so many options. The price is in a reasonable $9-15 range.

I didn't like this restaurant. I went here based on reading these reviews hoping for something that tasted better than Tio's, but I didn't get what I wished for. The selection I ordered was poorly spiced and incredibly greasy. Maybe that's what Mexican food in the suburbs has come to?

My girlfriend and I went to La Fuente on a Thursday night. I had been there once before and had not been impressed but figured I'd give it another try. We were seated promptly and served warm chips and salsa. Both were quite good. I noticed that they had 42 oz. margaritas so I ordered a frozen strawberry. For dinner I ordered the chorri pollo and my girlfriend ordered a combo platter with taco, tostada and chile relleno I believe. It took a bit to get our food but my margarita was decent and the chips were good so it wasn't a big deal. When we finally got our food is when the meal took a turn for the worse. My chorri pollo could best be described as simply bitter. Both the seasoned chicken breast and the sausage on top just didn't have a good taste. I think I could really only eat about 1/3. The rice was a bit dry and the beans bland. My girlfriend's said her platter was much worse than when she had been there for lunch. Her tostada pretty much turned into mush before she could eat it. A word of warning about the 42 oz. margaritas: it doesn't list the price on the menu. When I got the bill I found the drink was $14 which was more than either entree. In the end we both agreed we would have preferred Taco Bell. I continue to find that I have to go to Mexican Town in Detroit to really get a decent Mexican meal.

This is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. In fact, one usually has to go to the Hispanic section in Detroit to get food this good. Excellent food with great specials during lunch.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
