I live in Wyandotte and work in Detroit, so I get to eat at Polonus all the time. Since I work in Detroit, I go to quite a few of the different Polish restaurants in Hamtramck as well. The food at Polonus is better than any of the Polish restaurants in Hamtramck as far as I'm concerned. Their Polish sausage, cheese pierogies, sauerkraut, and cabbage rolls are delicious. Most of their soups are great too, as I love the beef barley and my wife swears by the dill pickle soup. This place isn't fancy, and is pretty family oriented, but the food is great, the prices are low, and you get a good amount to eat.

This place has solid food; I had a mixed plate, which were lunch portions. I like the fact that it's family-owned. Some people may complain about the service, but we were satisfied with everything! Go support this place!

I hunted this place down on Yelp just to tell you all how BAD this place is. I didn't know the name. I just knew that it was a bad polish restaurant in Wyandotte that i ate at a year ago. All of the food i tried was DISGUSTING. In fact, i didn't even finish anything I was served, i took one bite of everything and left starving. I would rather be starving hungry than eat this bad excuse for food. I wouldn't even donate this food to the homeless. I'm sorry, i don't mean to be offensive because the owners were actually very nice.... but the food......................................was just revolting. Don't waste your time.

The food was alright...not even close to Grandma's though. It is very low key; not a lot of business so the service was good. My only complaint-it wasn't very clean...I don't like staring at cobwebs while I'm eating.

Food is nothing compared to homemade...but it will definitely do in a pinch when you're craving some Polish comfort food. The meals are reasonably priced and you get a hefty portion. I wish I had the stomach capacity to order one of everything a la carte, since everything is so nummy! One of the things I love about this place is that they serve very plain dishes. So many places try to put new twists on old dishes and that happens to ruin it for me. The meals are very simple, which is nice sometimes =] We went in the afternoon and had great service. Had a replacement tea when mine was just about half gone! I originally had this at four stars, but took one away because the potato pancakes have a strange consistency and the "fried" pierogies are deep fried as opposed to pan fried in butter =\

This is good, simple polish food in a similarly nice simple "family diner". For me, not quite as good as the places in Hamtramck. Portions are large, everything is homemade. No frills, solid food.

Let's get the important part out of the way first: Great food, not so great service. It doesn't matter when you come but this is the case. For me, Polonus reminds me of family outings as a child, as comfort food, as a nice safe place to get the dishes that my grandmother used to make. The food is reliably delicious. From the pierogi, to the golabki, to the fish specials. It's all good and authentic in flavor and preparation. Their daily soups are also great. This is some of the best dill pickle soup around, but they don't have it every day, so get it when you can! They have some Polish beers which is exciting, so be sure to grab one with your meal. Now let's talk about the service. It really is not good. The other day I was there with a friend, we both live out of state, and were ordering wine with our meals. Upon presenting our out of state ID's, the waitress failed to believe they were us.. doing everything short of tearing the things up. She asked us out birthdays, comments about pictures not looking like us, etc. I'm all about responsible alcohol sales, but seriously, invest in a scanner if you are that concerned. Or at least educate your darn staff. Decor is a bit drab, unchanged for the 20 years that I have been going, but it works. It's the only Polish restaurant in the area that is 100% Polish and serves food daily, so its worth the trip.

We came across this gem while exploring the area. I was raised in a Polish home and the environment made me feel like I was in my Busia's house. We started with the pierogi -they were good, we then went to a city chicken-cabbage combo. Excellent. My favorite was the horseradish/beet side dish. Loved the fact that you can get bottles of wine and beer to go. You will not leave hungry-just like when you left Busia's house.

This place is one of the best kept secrets in Wyandotte. It is a nice little polish restaurant with good setting for families. I have gone to this little place for years, and my mom even had my bridal shower there. Everyone loved it! The food is excellent - great pierogis, city chicken, stuffed cabbage, meatballs and my personal favorite is the beet soup. Bring your appetite because you get generous portions at a very reasonable price. This place is perfect for a quiet dinner of homestyle comfort food. As far as authenticity, I have seen my priest (who is from Poland) having lunch there. Give it a try - you won't be sorry!

Eating at polonus right now. I have always loved this place. One major problem NO HELP. The poor waitress was working by herself running around like crazy trying to keep up with customer demand. This lady could not have done anything else to make it a better experience she was working the register taking and delivering take out orders and working the floor. ONE WAY TO SOLVE THIS: Have the man who occasionally pops his head out from behind the wooden door at the register come out and HELP. He is ridiculous making his staff work this way and causing such grief for its patrons. He should be ashamed of the way he runs this place. Then the poor waitress was being pelted by an idiot of a customer what an inconsiderate jerk, knowing how hard she is working leave her be.

Have to agree with other reviewers who say that this does not taste like the polish food your grandma or mom made, but it was hearty and tasted good all the same. Prices are reasonable and if you don't like stuffed cabbage or city chicken, the menu has a lot more to choose from, like meatloaf and brisket. You will find something to eat here. I really liked the cabbage soup which had bits of smoked sausage in it. Other reviewers mentioned the staff did not seem all that friendly. I personally found it to be the opposite. I wanted a coke but they had pepsi which I don't care for. I asked if they had cherry pepsi, the waitress said no but that she could make me a custom cherry pepsi. I told her not to go through all that trouble and that a regular pepsi would be fine. She went through the trouble anyways and surprised me. Very good staff. I will be back.

I haven't run into too many Polish restaurants in my travels, so I couldn't pass up an opportunity to partake of the Polish cuisine offered at Polonus Restaurant during my visit to the greater Detroit area. Like most of Detroit (and the surrounding areas), Polonus has seen its better days. Nevertheless, they appear to be quietly carrying on with their business. I tried out a Polish lunch platter with pierogies, stuffed cabbage, meatballs, chicken, and dumplings. Everything on the plate was a bit on the bland side, but filling. It was also a generous value for the money. That said, nowadays it wouldn't be difficult at all to get equally good (or better) Polish food from the freezer section (pierogies) and meat section (kielbasa) at your local grocery store. Maybe that's why there aren't too many Polish restaurants to be found.

I have eaten at many Polish diners, holes in the wall, etc. Polonus had forgettable food that was way below average, and the stuffed cabbage was the worst I have ever eaten anywhere. The staff is slow and do not know the art of serving nor keeping up with their customer. The decor is worn, seating is uncomfortable, dated and the floor is gross!!!!!!!!... My kielbasa was very tough and not that flavorful. The pierogi I can get at the supermarket and it would probably taste better. The saurkraut was bland and not fresh. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you have no choice.

If you go here expecting Grandma's food you will be disappointed. They do an honorable job of representing the staples of Polish cuisine. They don't have the time to pan fry the pierogies with butter and onions. That aside it's acceptable. City chicken isn't as good as it could be. It seems like they warm it up and it's a bit soggy sometimes. That is my only complaint. The sides are nice and the prices are fair. The stuffed cabbage is solid. Desserts are very solid.

If you want authentic great polish food then you have found the right place. The wait staff needs a little work but the food more than compensates for the staff. I have not had anything that I would not come back for seconds on.

Food is always great. Service was totally lacking on my last visit, but it's normally OK. Prices are reasonable.

Slightly below average polish food. Had better pierogies out of the freezer. Kraut and stuffed cabbage was bland, kielbasa was alright but nothing you can't get from Kroger and heat up yourself. I wouldn't recommend this place.
