Best wonton soup I've ever tasted. Its not just a big noodle dropped in flavored water. The broth is flavorful, and they add greens and sprouts. I ordered a combo, which came with sweet and sour AND almond boneless chicken. Both were a little light on flavor, but still solid. Service was good. The waitress even hooked me up with some extra hot tea to go at no extra charge,

Shong Hey is our go-to Chinese spot. What sets it apart is not the quality of the food (because most places have the same food or very close to it) but its consistency. Every time, time after time the food is cooked fresh and always steaming hot. never get a mushy egg roll or cold sweet & sour. My favorite menu item is the orange chicken. Inside is your typical Chinese restaurant. No windows, dark wood paneling, etc.

Stopped in for lunch today, my first time here. The restaurant is in the middle of a strip mall and doesn't really stand out. I was there about 1 p.m on a Saturday, and was the only person in the restaurant for most of the time I was there. Service was fast enough, but when I needed a minute to decide, the waitress stood there and waited rather than letting me peruse the menu. Prices were fair, about $9 for a plate of pepper steak, rice, small cup of egg drop soup and an egg roll. The soup was egg drop soup, hard to screw up, and hard to make amazing. The egg roll I'm sure was fine, but I didn't care for it. Though I don't care for any egg rolls so I can't really say it was bad. The pepper steak was average. Nothing stood out about it, but it wasn't bad either. Service was ok, they brought me my food and then left me alone. I was dining alone, so I was ok with that. I'd go again, but it's not a must visit either.

Newly moved into the area, I decided to try Shong Hey based on the awesome reviews. And then I ate there... Super aloof staff that neither made me feel welcome or comfortable. My crab ran goons had hardly any filling. I truly don't care if they are filled with pure cream cheese, fake Krab, or real chunks of crab meat but these bad boys had hardly anything in their crispy wonton shell. They also came without their own dipping sauce which was another huge disappointment. The egg roll seemed a bit small, comparatively but it was good and I like the type of plum sauce this restaurant uses. It's kind of hard to find so that was a small win. The fried rice with my meal was bland and about as simple as fried rice can be. My sweet and sour chicken "safe" meal just didn't seem all that great. Again, it was more on the bland side. Yes, they provide some larger portions but who wants to eat a huge meal or two of bland, boring food.

Last night I had the worst experience with this restaurant. Ordered carry out a little after 9, Big Mistake!! Rice was dry and hard, food was cold (as if they had pulled it from the refrigerator. I WAS a regular at this restaurant but, after this experience I think I'll be going back to China House. For those of you who continue to eat here, don't order catty out when it's close to their closing hour. There is no telling what you might end up with.

Food was very good. Ordered a few different things and my son is a very picky eater, but he enjoyed everything he tried. Also portion sizes are pretty good. Will definitely order from there again.

Love this place. Best almond chicken of the region. Delicious mung sprout eggrolls that will ruin you for all cabbage eggrolls.

Okay, okay...I teetered on this one and waited quite some time to write a review since Chinese fare is something I am pretty picky about. The skinny: Vegetable fried rice is pretty hard to screw up so it's an excellent thing that they do not. It is a bit sticky/clumpy as it should be and the vegetables are LARGE. This is my 2nd favorite dish but as you know, this is a very safe dish for most Chinese places. Crab Rangoon is just so-so. The filling isn't bad (good flavor, chunks of crab) but the outside seems to be always overcooked and there is simply too much of it. The wrapper to filling ratio needs to be adjusted. More filling, less wrapper. Pepper steak is my favorite menu item. The meat is not questionable whatsoever and again, the vegetables are huge. The sauce (or gravy...whatever you call it) has to be some of the best I have tried when it comes to pepper steak. This item is my main suggestion, for sure. Orange chicken is wayyyyy too sweet. It's similar to eating an orange push-up pop. Not what I want when it comes to my chicken. Leave that kind of orange to the push-up's and make the damn chicken taste like chicken please! Sesame chicken is mediocre. The chicken pieces are too big so the sauce isn't evenly distributed over the whole dish. The sauce has a nice mild flavor but with the chicken being over sized and slightly over-breaded, the sauce just isn't enough to save the dish. Vegetable LoMein has no flavor. None, zip, zilch! It is wasted money to me. Egg rolls are fan friggin' tastic. Well, with the exception of 1 time. Typically, they are some of the best made egg rolls around. Not too greasy with a nice crispy wrapper. Perfect. I give them a pass on the 1 time mine was burnt to a crisp; only because I have ordered here so often that 1 time isn't a deal breaker to me. I have ordered other menu items from here but the aforementioned are my highs and lows. As far as customer service and what not, I added some more skinny for you... The portions are huge. However, they tend to over-stuff the packages with your food when getting takeout. This may sound awesome but it actually is not very awesome at all. EVERY time I get food from here, something spills in the bag and on 2 occasions, I was left with sauce in my car. Booooo! Not cool! The staff are pleasant folk and do make sure you have enough soy sauce, silverware, fortune cookies, etc. so that attention to detail is appreciated. The shop is located in a strip mall so if you are expecting fancy then you may have some delusions in life you should deal with. The inside is clean however and the lighting is somewhat dim which I tend to like when pigging out in public. Personally, I would give the egg rolls and pepper steak 5 stars along with the customer service but had to be fair here. My 3 stars will stand for now. I say, "Give them a try." I know I will go here again. Most likely multiple times. Perhaps someday, I will venture out and order something different. If I do, I'll write another review. Yay! I rhymed!! :-)

Located in what has to be one of the oldest strip malls in the area. I have been enjoying the food at Shong Hey for nearly 40 years. Fantastic Egg Rolls. Huge portions. The Special Won Ton Soup is a meal in itself. Great prices. The remarks on cleanliness are most likely coming from folks that have never worked in the restaurant industry. Old and dirty are not always the same thing. Who cares if the carpet is old and worn? I would not eat off the carpet at the Whitney either. The plates, silverware, and table tops are always clean. Fast friendly service from a tenured staff and quick carryouts as well. Recommended!

Walked in, washed my hands, walked back out. Seriously, I was disgusted by the lack of cleanliness. If the food is good here, I woudn't know, I can't eat at a place that has this lack of cleanliness. The decor is very boring.

I grew up going here. I probably ate here a few times a month for the first 18 yrs of my life. Although they have changed owners a time or two it is still the same place, same food. I love the consistency. You know that your meal is going to be the same, every time. The prices are extremely reasonable for the amount of food you get. Very standard menu options, but the quality is great compared to most Chinese restaurants. Service is usually pretty good, and the food comes out pretty fast, even when they are busy. Expect a little wait on the weekends. Easily the best Chinese restaurant downriver, and in fact, probably the best in the Metro Detroit area. I live north of Detroit now, and I would still drive there for dinner. For around $8 you can get a meal with either fried or white rice, soup and an egg roll. That's decent considering most nasty Chinese buffet places cost around the same. Almond chicken, szechuan chicken and sweet and sour chicken are my faves. Mmmm.. makes me hungry just thinking about it...

Great food for a great price! (mind you I'm reviewing the carry out. The inside leaves a little to be desired...) food will be ready by the time you get there and they give pretty big portions. I've gotten multiple items off the menu thru the years and never got anything I didn't like!

This is the best china dinning in the area. I really feel that for the amount of money spend you receive more than Ample portions of food. I've tried everything on the menu and I've enjoyed all of it. I'm twenty two years old and I remember eating there when I was three. So I'm imagining if they've been in business his long they obviously know what they are doing.

Well, I wasn't going to do this but......I have always loved this restaurant - it has been my fav for years....BUT then I went there on Monday, Aug 3 and everything changed. My son and grandson were with me and we were anticipating a great chinese meal. Ordered our favorites and of all things they had a combo with my two favorites, Almond Chicken and Sweet and Sour Chicken on one plate, yummo So ordered our dinner, had a great and knowledgable waitress and got our food rather quickly, it was GREAT! We were about halfway through our meal, we look to our side and walking up the wall was, yes, a diner's worst nightmare, a cochroach!!!! My son bravely scooped it into a napkin and called the manager over and gave it to her! Sorry but that ruined my dinner and I couldn't continue to eat. I know every restaurant probably has them (hopefully NOT) but I don't want to see them walking toward my dinner!!! They did give us $9 off our bill but it just didn't help somehow! It will take me a long time to get over this but I hope I do, their food is (usually) excellant.

Oh Shong Hey, how I used to love you so.. This little Chinese dive had been a staple in my downriver life long ago.. Because I am seldom downriver, I hadn't been here in about 20 years! Walking thru the door was like stepping back in time. This place is so outdated, NOTHING has changed. It for sure needs to be livened up a bit.. It is so tired. We ordered fried wontons, they were horribly overcooked, almost burnt. Because they were only a couple bucks, I didn't bother complaining. The egg drop soup was very good. I tried my friends won ton, I've had better. The broth was pretty bland. We initially were drinking only water.. Usually the server will provide you with a large glass, here we were given the tiny ones - not much bigger than a juice glass.. They had bigger glasses available, I didn't understand...especially when she could hardly keep up with refills.. The fried rice was good, but I came across a couple chunks of unidentifiable meat, it may have been dark chicken, I don't know. I avoided it. We shared each others meals, it's always fun to sample.. The sweet and sour chicken was good, nice moist white chicken lightly breaded. The almond chicken was weird. I think there was beef gravy on it. I've heard of this, but it doesn't make sense to me. It was way too heavy. I always enjoy Chinese tea, they did that well.. Maybe my palette has changed, but I don't love you anymore, SH.. it makes me sad. Oh, and please change the radio station. I don't like Nickelback when I'm not eating, let alone when I am eating.....

I have been going here since I was a young kid and nothing has changed, everything is delicious. Big portions, having probably tried almost everything on the menu i musy say they have the best general tso chicken around, but you cant go wrong ordering something else here. Simply the best Chinese restaurant around!

Been eating here for over 10 years, great food, large portions, always enough to take home and have a late snack. As has been talked about, great egg rolls. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

We used to go here regularly but unfortunately the food quality has gone down and the inside is so old that I think it's become impossible to properly clean ..it's sad because it used to be our go to when we wanted Chinese food.

You know how it is when you've grown up eating at a restaurant, and you hold it up as the gold standard to compare against all others? ...but then new people try it (say, Ken), and they think its average. That's Shong Hey. I've eaten here for 25 years, and I love it. The best beansprout egg rolls, with homemade sweet (NOT plum) and spicy mustard sauces. The best Almond Chicken. The best Won Ton Soup. The best Fried Shrimp. White meat chunks for Sweet and Sour Chicken. Tasty, tender beef. Fab Yang Chow fried rice. Now, don't get me wrong, Ken likes Shong Hey, he just doesn't love it as much as I do. He does agree that the eggrolls are awesome. And he likes their version of General Tso's. (He'd probably rate it a 3.5, so I'm glad I didn't ask for his input on this review) My family has eaten in and taken out, and both work. The restaurant is very casual. Takeout business hops - quick, and we've never had a wrong or missing item in our orders. Large portions for not a lot of $$.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
