I've been going here since the 70's, and it's always been a fave. Only place in town where they don't batt an eye when I order a "tongue + pastrami on rye, w/ hot mustard".......sublimely good. Ordered a Harry's Special today - never tried it before, and I really liked how it all blended together. They don't make em' like this anymore, so enjoy it while you can....it's the real deal!

Star is the traditional Jewish deli where you'll find the standard cuts of meats, breads, sides, pickles, cheeses, etc... They put together the typical huge sandwich that has always been good in flavor, meats are spiced well and fresh bread. Typically not in a standard Jewish deli is a grill, which Star doesn't have one. In some places with a grill, I have found the sandwiches are much better when you can get them slightly grilled. I wish Star had one so that you could get them grilled, but oh well. Star is not one that sets themselves apart, however, what they do, they do well and traditional.

Star Deli makes GREAT CORNED BEEF SANDWICHES! They were plenty generous with their corned beef for my tastes and I like to eat! I ordered their most popular sandwich. I was also impressed with their rye bread. It's softer than most rye breads with a wonderful crunchy crust that still tasted just as great after spending the night in the refrigerator. Maybe New York has better corned beef sandwiches as one person on Yelp said, but Paris has better bread...so what!?!! I recently ate at Nate n' Al's Deli in Beverly Hills and was not impressed with their corned beef sandwich at all. Maybe I went there on an off day. But I thought the Star Deli corned beef sandwich was leaps and bounds better than the one at Nate n' Al's. When I go back to Michigan, I'm making a pilgrimage back to the Star Deli!!! Mmmm good!!!

Our go to place for carry out deli. Fast and friendly. Reasonable prices (for deli). No tables. Normal selection of meats, cheeses, etc.

This family-owned shop is nestled in a strip mall in Southfield. Get ready for sandwiches stacked as high as your mouth can handle. I ordered the veggie sandwich and couldn't get the entire sandwich in my mouth - on top of that, it tastes awesome with Russian dressing and cole slaw to give it a wonderfully crunchy profile. I'm convinced that whatever pastries they serve in this place are worth your time, money, and spike in blood sugar level. If you like sweets you'll enjoy the cheesecake, cinnamon walnut pastry, cookies, etc. the owner is typically walking around and trying to get you to get that extra side, soda, sweets, or anything else he can, and he does it with an infectious smile. You'll enjoy all that this place has to offer.

Best Deli I've been to yet! You get what you pay for. $10 a sandwich and everything was fresh!

Don't know why it took so long for me to try their food, it was delicious! The corned beef sandwiches are great, the jambalaya was awesome, and service was wonderful! Prices are pretty reasonable for the amount of food too. Looks like I found a permanent alternative to fast food!

Very fresh and good sammy's, just make sure to ask for a pickle if you are really looking forward to getting one. I figured one would just be there, and to my dismay it wasn't :-(

I have been visiting the star for years! I would make a special stop for their fat free tuna, and I did so today as I was in the neighborhood. Not only was I insulted today when I visited I was also extremely disappointed in the food for the first time ever. Tuna tasted old, service was slow - not to mention the old guys pretty much refusing to hel me because I was wearing an MSU shirt, and when I got home my order was wrong. Star deli has fallen!

My first experience at the Star Deli was over 15 years ago and it had been at least 5 yrs since my last visit. The price is on the high end for a sandwich. I had the hot roast beef brisket which was mostly tender but "not very flavorful". I should have gone with their signature corned beef, at least I might have felt that it was worth what I paid had it been good. I'll never know because I will never return. The biggest disappointment was the bad service. Let me say, the gentleman that made my sandwich was attentive and polite but the two ladies behind the counter handling check out apparently felt that gossiping with each other was more important than acknowledging that a paying customer was on the other side of the counter. Mind you. . .waiting to hand them money. But the "Gossiping" was king in their world. I was hoping to at least be blown away by the sandwich since their customer treatment is secondary. But unfortunately it was only ok. To sum it up, it is not worth the money and I refuse to pay for poor treatment.

There's really not much to say, Star Deli has been a staple in Southfield for awhile. With its hard salami hanging from the walls and the smell of hot corn beef and pastrami being piled on onion rolls, this place is a lunch crowd magnet. Average price of sandwiches are $11.00 bucks, add chips and a can beverage you'll be looking at $15.00 for lunch. Star Deli has quality sandwichs, but they aren't New York..........

Been coming here since 1976 (usually once a week for the past year) and have never been disappointed with the food or service. Best rye bread and sandwiches ever.

One of the best deli's around, and worth the drive if you live as far as I do. They have seemingly only the highest quality of deli meats and cheeses (only second to Steve's deli, but at a much smaller cost). Only thing that bugs me is that it's not rare to wait for 13-15 minutes even if you're the only customer present at 7 am. Will definitely go back.

They're corned beef is good but sandwiches are too small for the price they can add a lil more than they do jst syn

Best Reuben's in town! This is a real old school deli, no seating, just a high counter from behind which delicious sandwiches emerge. The corned beef and Pastrami are excellent, as are the pickles. The sandwiches are made to order and hot. My only wish is that they wouldn't wrap the hot sandwiches in plastic wrap, depending on your drive, it can make them a little soggy from the condensation. I usually get my Reuben's on my way home, so I just throw it into a pan for a couple seconds to crisp up the outside again. It is also a little expensive, the sandwich prices have gone up. They used to be around 9 dollars, now they are at 11.

How does this place only have 4.5 stars? At the very least this place makes some of the world's best corned beef! Every time I visit my Mom I stop in here and grab a couple sandwiches and a pound of corned beef to bring back with me to the west side of the state!

A female co-worker of mine once told me that all a husband really needs to be happy is sex and sandwiches. While Star Deli can't help you with the first, they really deliver on the sandwiches. No pretentious chain deli here--just a bunch of guys who really understand quality meats. Ordering can be a little intimidating for newbies. Ask for the "new dill" pickles when you order your sandwich. This place has the best rare roast beef I've ever had, and their rye bread is wonderful. I would drop 5 stars on Star Deli if they had a place for me to sit, and if parking wasn't so congested. I make this a must stop each time I'm back in the metro Detroit area.

I'm pretty bummed out I found this place about a month before I was being laid off at Verizon. I always struggled to find a good sandwich (or any good restaurant, really) in Southfield and now it's too late. I live in Dearborn, so I probably won't find my way out here very often after I leave my job. If you follow my reviews, you know I'm boring as hell (my apologies for being so lame) and I really just like a good turkey sandwich. Luckily for me, Star Deli has great turkey sandwiches. Too bad I found out about them too late. I've been a few times and had them make a sandwich to my liking, since all the ones on their menu were a little too daring for me. I get turkey, cheese and bacon on challah bread with a little Italian dressing. Simple but delicious. Their prices for sandwiches are a little steep, around $8-9 apiece, but well worth it because they're stacked and the turkey is good quality. I can't speak for the other meats but I loved the flavor of the turkey and the cheddar was thick-cut and tasty. They have dozens of drinks to choose from including juice, tea and canned pop... and beer? I don't know how the beer works but it's there. The deli also has different brands of chips including Better Made and Lays, Entenmann's packaged sweets and their own individually wrapped cakes and brownies. It's a great place to find a good sandwich but their parking sucks and you can't eat inside... AND it's such a drive from Dearborn. (They accept credit cards, even though it's not clearly indicated on their door.)

Delis may come and delis may go, and if so they needed to go! The Star has been in the same place for as long as I can remember and that my friend is a good thing! This is the real deal old school deli that everyone should go to when they need a deli fix! Its small with no place to sit and eat, just come in order get your food and move on. This is also a good thing!! The food is what the Star is all about and it is THE BEST you will find, and I have eaten at some of the best of the best. I'm not going to tell you what to order I'm just go in take a deep breath and smell the smells that every deli wishes it could have, because eating is more then taste it should be a full body experience!!! So get in your car and head out to the Star and enjoy the Best of the Best! Live well and eat well, and please no chains!

Customer service was great. I ordered to corned beef sandwiches with swiss on rye total was $22. The corned beef was sliced thick and was dry like paper. Its served cold and fries are not offered.

Great little deli. My brother-in-law loved the pastrami. I loved the vegetarian chopped liver.

  • Tallman F.

Slymans in Cleveland is HEADS & SHOULDERS above this. .... I stopped becoz I was going thru corned beef withdrawal. If this is the best in the area - I'd get a better sandwich by having last months leftover bacon put inside some leftover pancakes ..... shrug ..................... when i am in the area again - i will speed up when i get by this local deli i would not go again ..... period.

I am ever on a quest to find the Lord Sandwich of sandwiches, someone worthy of the rank and privilege the title brings. Sandwiches aren't my culinary niche, so I want something that ranks a higher than bread slapped together around a pile of unsorted bits and bobs. Star Delicatessen gets a lot of love on Yelp, but this is one plump around the middle aristocrat who is more doughy white boy and thick meat between the head, and exactly not the kind of sandwich shop to sweep me off my feet. The fans drawn to Star in the lunch time hour pack the teensy-weensy parking lot, making popping in and out a nightmare. Plan to be circling around and dealing with impatient drivers who stuff their car in crooked to imaginary spots, or loiter about gnoshing on corned beef. I wish everyone would show a little more decency and respect for fellow hungry masses, and smash their maws full of goodness around the corner. Say, in the Meijer parking lot, where there's room to spare. But the sandwiches! Meat sliced by the pound and sausages tumbling like gifts from masculine gods indulging in a private joke greets upon entrance. I have a love affair with fat loaves of fresh baked bread that could wick up an oil slick if dropped onto the sound. Take note, oil barons, you might want a legion of bakers at your disposal just in case. Among the variety of them, I went with the corned beef on the recommendations of others here. Why mess with what seems to be their best? Unfortunately, just because everyone else dances with the Crown Prince of Lumpen doesn't mean he's going to turn into a dashing, suave aristocrat just because I took his hand. The bread was very chewy and rather hard to cram into my mouth, a sign of overindulgence perhaps. Looking forward to the corned beef in hopes it could redeem the highly munchable, mundane rye, I am sad to say that it was no saviour at all. The thick slices could be used as coasters or dominoes, if the place actually had tables. Intricate lattices of hard fat and meat laced together in a rather unappetizing concoction, and now I know how sailors felt as they embarked out to sea with barrels and crates of hard tack biscuits and corned beef in salt. Definitely not to my tastes, at any rate. Corned beef should melt, it shouldn't cling to your molars and refuse to be ground down by a heroic act of chewing. The Russian dressing is disgusting. Let's just leave it at that. I hate mayonnaise except in deviled eggs, more or less, and adding two tablespoons of ketchup and a sneeze of salt doesn't improve matters at all. I should have gone without but I don't think the sandwich-meister heard me clearly in the hubbub. I managed to scrape a fair amount off once I got back to work, but nonetheless, the aftertaste clung to my mouth like the vile, oily grip of a leering guy who managed to con you into taking a spin around the floor. At the end of the lunch dance, Crown Prince of Lumpen-Bulgen was still unappealing and I went away feeling greasy, queasy, and a little bit frustrated. What does it take to find a good deli near work?

  • Steven K.

Bit over priced for what they give. $10 for a sandwich. And on top of that they charge a dime to have the bread grilled. I don't care about the dime but more of the principal that they actually charge you to grill the bread. I've never been to a restaurant that does that. If that didn't happen I wouldn't have even taken the time to write the review.

I, unfortunately, was uprooted from my fancy Detroit office, and was kicked over to Southfield for the time being. Obviously, I was a little hurt by my new lack of food options at lunch time. Everyone was raving about the Star Deli. There is a major flaw with this business: The parking is AWFUL. This is a very high-traffic strip of stores with very few parking spaces. The mornings and lunch time rushes are a disaster when it comes to getting in and out. The sandwich I had was decent- just got the corned beef like any usual Star Deli customer. The portion is huge, but I wished that it tasted more like Bread Basket. I'm sure I'll end up eating there again in the future, but I don't think it's my top choice for a sandwich.

Disclaimer: I moved to the area in 1998, but haven't lived in the area since 2005, so this is based on my memory from prior to 2005. This place is small, with a narrow storefront, but their sandwiches are awesome! You have to get your food to go, as there's nowhere to sit. They have homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, deli meats, cheeses. I only got specialty sandwiches here, with my favorite being the Uptowner (smoked turkey, melted Swiss, lettuce, tomato & honeycup mustard on onion roll). If I remember correctly, the sandwich comes with a slice of dill pickle. You can complete your meal by buying a canned or bottled drink & bag of chips. Here's their website...http://www.stardeli.net/home.nxg. There's a menu on there too. Located near the southwest corner (if I remember correctly, there's a gas station on the actual corner) of Telegraph & 12 Mile on the far west end of a strip mall with a narrow parking lot in front.

This deli is awesome!!! I'm very picky about my delis and Star fits the bill. I'd recommend the corned beef or the Reuben on Rye. A little pricey for lunch but the quality is worth it. I believe the meats are made in house and of course the bread is baked fresh daily. Carryout only. Tip: At lunch the parking lot is packed but you can easily just park and walk across the street.

best deli around! you just cant beat their sandwiches. i've tried many other delis in the area and none come close! I go at least once a week, good food, good people, good pricing.

WINNER! This place is great. Excellent corned beef, great roast beef, good onion rolls. One complaint is the rye bread did not have seeds. also, i wish they had seating so I could eat there next time.

I have a message for the employees at Star Deli: If somebody is trying to give you their money, you SHOULD NOT treat them like they're a piece of crap. I'm from New York, and my favorite deli is Katz in Manhattan, so when I heard people saying that this place is comparable to Katz, I couldn't wait to try it. Let me clear this nasty rumor up for my fellow New Yorkers right now: In the words of the b**** who 'served' me the first and last time I ate at Star, 'This ISN'T New York.' The New Yorkers who are saying this must've been in Michigan far too long and can't remember what a real deli sandwich tastes or feels like, because this place is a far cry from an authentic New York deli sandwich: The only similarity is the price. Let me tell you what happened. I decided on the corned beef, but I LOATHE rye bread and (surprise, surprise) EVERY sandwich with corned beef seemed to come on rye bread. If I'm paying fricken $12.00 for a sandwich, I'm going to try to avoid having it on my least favorite bread, so I asked if I could have it on French bread; this is what transpired: Me: May I have it on French bread? Employee: We don't have French bread. Me: You don't? Employee: This is a Jewish deli. No. [This was said in a 'what-are-you,-an-idiot?' tone of voice. And mind you, I'm talking to what appears to be a blonde WASP, while you can tell I'm Jewish from across the room and wearing a gigantic Star of David.] Me: They do in New York Jewish delis. Employee: THIS ISN'T NEW YORK! Yeah, it was shouted at me. I honestly was so stunned that I didn't know what to say in response, but figured since she was so damn hostile toward me without any reason to be so, there was no point in arguing. The attitude was that I should feel honored to be paying for their sandwiches, whether I liked it or not. I wanted a bread with a substantial crust; even a bagel would do, but when you're being shouted at and treated like you're an idiot for asking a completely reasonable question, it doesn't make you want to pursue it any further...and that's probably why she acts that way. Fine: Your sandwiches are so effin' good that you think their flavor will supersede my hatred of rye? Let's see what you've freaking got. When I got into my car to eat, because there's no where to sit, I removed the plastic wrap (yes, they wrapped it very tightly in plastic) and took a bite: The disgusting rye bread that she refused to swap out for a bread I actually wanted and was sliced and had the consistency of a sandwich bread from the supermarket was soggy and smooshed against the corned beef. The bread was wet to the touch, and probably an 1/8 of an inch (if that) thick, and the ratio of bread to meat was WAY off...and even worse, the soggy bread stuck to the roof of my mouth like peanut butter. And the worst part of it all, was that as I sat in my car, eating this vile, over-priced sandwich, I thought of a come back for her snotty and completely untrue statement ('Not in a Jewish deli. No.'). 'If they're so concerned about bleached flour, why are you selling bacon and putting cheese with meat? That has nothing to do with it being Jewish. Don't blow smoke up my a** and trying to make me feel like an idiot for asking; just say you don't have it!' It was enough to make my stomach churn. In hindsight, I really wish I would've just shouted back at her that she just lost a customer because of her attitude and walked out. If I'm all but waving money in your face, you'd think it'd behoove you to treat me like a damn human being. I will never, ever patron this restaurant again. I seriously can't even remember the last time I was treated so rudely, and the sandwich was disgusting.

So I don't know how I have worked in Southfield for over 5 years and only just recently went to the Star Deli for the first time. So since there seems to be a debate about whether or not the corned beef is amazing - I decided to steer clear of that. I ordered a #5 which was a turkey sandwich with this cherry stuff on it. I was in the mood for a delicious deli sandwich- and that is exactly what I got. Service was efficient and didn't seem cranky to me. Maybe I went on a good day. We also ordered some fries to split - they were okay... even though they were strangely yellow. The potato salad has gotten rave reviews here- but I hate mayo and couldn't do it. The pickle with my sandwich was actually kind of gross. We were able to cram into an uncomfortable little table w/o too many people touching us or knocking into us. So- would I say that I paid double for something I could have made myself as Janelle suggests? Yes. I would say that. But - I am lazy. I would never make myself a sandwich like this. So when I am in the mood for a sandwich again, I will definitely stop in. I won't stop the world to eat here though - it was good, but not life-changing.

  • Liz W.

I hate that there is nowhere to sit here as it is such a haul from my house. The potato salad here is the closest I have ever eaten to my absolute fave (and sadly long gone) corned beef place ever, Ben and George's. Awesome stuff and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The sandwiches here are overrated in my opinion. Very crusty rye and just merely meh corned beef. I have to agree with Janelle in that the corned beef is sliced too thickly and the fat does not melt into it as it does at the Bread Basket. It results in still decent flavor but way too chewy for my taste. I also hate the russian dressing and the cole slaw is meh. The new dill pickles are quite tasty though, I also like the Better Made chips. The parking lot sucks, staff is none too friendly or happy looking. End of story. All in all if I am in the area I will always swing in for potato salad and pickles. Plus they have great bagels next door. I would be willing to try another sandwich but not corned beef again.

Star Deli is a well known neighborhood staple. Is it consistent? No. I have been to Star Deli more times than I can count. Each time has been a totally different experience. I always get sandwiches. Sometimes I get a tasty sandwich with fresh ingredients. Other times...the bread is stale. I notice that the bread goes stale and then they make sandwiches with it. Eeek. Today I was nursing a very, very bad cold and I figured that some soup and an Eastsider (corned beef with horseradish, onions, tomatoes) would speed up the healing process. Plus, this place opens at 7am. I called in my order. When i got there the woman at the counter packed up my soup. That's a plus. I hate cold soup. This was a good day. The sandwiches are HUGE. I mean they are huge, if I wasn't sick I wouldn't have been able to finish it. The corned beef is juicy and delicious. There was way too much horseradish on my sandwich but it cleared up my sinuses at least. The soup was fine for what it was. The prices are a little high for me ($12 for a sandwich and a soup) but when they do it right, it's GOOD. Like I said before. This was a good day. Maybe it's better to go in the morning because I have gone later in the day and gotten bread that was most definitely stale. I'd go again, but with caution.

A day in a life....or at least an evening.....Check this out.... I come home from work, relax for a little and then sit at my computer and start to Yelp! I start to read the conversation about "Sammiches! and how everone suggests their favorite deli or sandwich place....well one problem .. I AM HUNGRY....Note to self...DON'T Yelp! when you're hungry!!!! OK... my daughter calls me, tells me she's having dinner at b/f...OK...So, now what do I want to do? Well, thanks to Rodger, I decide to try this place...I haven't been here in like 10 years....I check out the reviews...WOW...to my surprise the closest reviewer is from Ferndale...all others are from out-state...Quick, jump in the car...go to Star Deli.. So here it is...I eat sammich when I get home....but... Check out the menu....I decide to go with: The Super Turkey - White meat turkey breast on rye w/lettuce, tomato, mayo and swiss cheese - Excellent! Awesome..piled two feet high(actually six inches-I measured) - 5 Stars Potato Chips - Detroit area's finest - Better Made - OK...no rating. Service - Great! - I got lucky, no line, had time to check out the menu. As I was waiting the sandwich maker guy(forget name) makes a couple of suggestions....or just to make what I would like if not on board. No pressure at all - 5 Stars OK...This is a real good deli...when in the area, it's definately worth it. OK...I leave here and go across the street... yelp.com/biz/lowes-home-…

DELICIOUS!!!! When I think that I want a corned beef sandwich, I think about Star Deli! The sandwich is so tasty!! I will say that the parking leaves something to be desired, I can't go on my lunch break it's so busy. Some people say that Bread Basket is better, I disagree. These sandwiches aren't as big as BB, but the meat is more tender and juicier at Star.

  • Jesper G.

It was not the kind of sandwich I expected. If you are looking for a sandwich-burger then it is the place, but if you are looking for a fresh made sandwich of baguette (French stick) with salad, ham, tomato etc., which I was, then it is not the place. Think I should have follow Heather J. advice because I do agree with her.

Love this place. Everything has always been on point. Some of the best pastrami I have ever had. Look I'm in the mood I drive for 20 minutes just to get a couple of sandwiches.

For $12.58, I could have done without the extreme attitude for my BLT on soggy toast, can of soda and matzo ball soup. You want butter with your bread? Well that will cost you! 64 cents to be exact. Much better delis in the hood, try Plaza deli or up the road to Steve's Deli.

Flat out awesome, huge sandwiches, just like the best delis in the NE. Friendly service, totally unlike any eatery in the NE. Go hungry, but plan to take half of your sandwich home for late night snacking.

A little over 10 years ago I discovered Star Deli. And slowly, as my life has changed, friends have moved, and I have gotten older, I know that I can always come back here for the same, amazing, corned beef. To be specific, the best corned beef sandwich I have ever had the honor to construct: Corned Beef, cut lean, with Russian Dressing and Muenster Cheese on an Onion Roll. Dessert? Two cinnamon rugelah's please! They do one thing extremely well - consistency. It's always great, the service is always the same, and they always crack me up on the phone. It gets busy in there, so I tend to call ahead when I want lunch. By the way, if you are looking for something light, try the Julienne Salad (They call it a Juli - I recommend extra egg and chopped.) Some might say it's a little on the pricey side, but the quality is outrageous and worth every penny. And of course, if you want to see pricey you can always head down the street to Steve's. Seating - quite simply - go to Starbuck's!!! They don't care, just get a drink while you are there! Don't forget to stop by around 8:00pm for some fresh, hot corned beef and muenster cheese. I can guarantee you that package won't make it home unopened. They are perfect for each other - like Bert and Ernie but for mouth bound roll ups. Star Deli - There is no deli better. None.

Let me just say this first, I am a "virgin" yelp review, and there is a reason Star Deli is my first review. There are no other words, to me is the best delicatessen that i've ever been too. I've been to Carnegie, and Katz's in NYC, while they are great delis in their own right (they have great meats pastrami, corned beef and tongue...just to name a few) but that's all they are HUGE piles of meat in between two pieces of bread. For me bigger is not always better. Don't get me wrong, or misunderstand me Katz's and Carnegie delis are great delis. Here @ Star Deli their pastrami special sandwich, chicken salad, tuna special, and beef tongue sandwiches are the BEST bar-none. They are large sandwiches and hover around the ten dollar range, but are well worth it, and usually only eat half at a time. They are also stocked with Entenmann's pastries, cookies, cakes, potato crisps, and tons of choices of soda and candy. This place is always busy ( I suggest to call ahead). We've been going there, ordering from there since I was a little lad, and everytime I go back to MI this is one of the few "must go" places, and take away a few times. This is as Good as it gets.

Best deli sandwich place around. Period. Been going here for 20 years, and it hasn't changed. If you are looking for a classic jewish deli then this is your place. If you are looking for something more (like a trendy sandwich shoppe or French baguette place), then go somewhere else. But, for those who like fresh baked rye bread that is sliced while you wait, piled high with corned beef, pastrami, or turkey, look no further. This is your place. You won't be disappointed.

THE FOOD THE FOOD THE GLORIOUS FOOD!!!!! We had Star catered in for lunch at the office this week and MAN-sichewitz was it spectacular!! The attention to detail is amazing. There was a mountain of mustardy potato salad covered in a light dusting of shredded carrot flanked by pickled green tomato slices (yes folks the only place I've seen them outside the thumb area), colossal green and black olives, 2 kinds of pickles and treasure troves of meats/cheeses. I do not eat meat but everyone raved about the corned beef. I had tuna salad which was almost as good as Whole Foods-star uses pink tuna (blech) but manages to make it delicious with what I'm guessing amounts to an entire jar of mayonnaise. The coleslaw is on the sweet side which is just the way I like it and the bread your standard jewish rye. We ordered for 17 people and had leftovers for the next day. My only gripe about this place is the customer service. I recommend knowing EXACTLY what you want before calling as the girl on the phone makes the soup nazi seem patient and helpful. Also, I called to confirm the delivery and she conveniently forgot to add my tuna salad during our first verbal battle for catering. This, however, is not enough for me detract any stars as the food more than made up for the hassle.

I had the Reuben sandwich for the first time today. It is 8.95 and all you get with it was this tiny little pickle spear.Eh, for the price and taste, I have had much.much better!

this review is a repeat. ok so the corned beef is awsome and so is the pastrami. the pickles are what i expect from a good deli. i usually get the corned beef with russian on rye or the turkey with cole slaw and russian dressing on rye. both are huge and get saved for dinner later on at work. i really love these sandwiches and everyone at my work loves them too. we treat ourselves at least once monthly. the downside is that the parking is horrible and there is never a place to put your car. i usually park illegally. also a downside is the women who work there. they're just plain mean and you could say maybe lacking in happiness. i have other adjectives that i use to describe them, but will keep them to myself. the palce still gets 4 stars though because i love the sandwiches that much. love, juston

Any Irish Catholic originally from NYC knows this the place to buy bread or get a loaf of Rye. My grandpa who wrote for the NYTimes constantly drove bread to us up in East Lansing from Star. We reveled in it. The crust, the soft chewiness in the middle. My brother Sean and I used to fight over it. I later dated a nice Jewish girl that confirmed that is the place to get bread. Sandwich wise, I've had a rare roast beef with spicy mustard on rye and a tuna on rye with lettuce and tomato several times only leaving with smiles on my face.

Another place I was sure I had reviewed... Fresh ingredients and sure-handed staff makes for great sandwiches. Now I pretty much am limited to egg salad and the veggie sandwich, but their corned beef is highly regarded, and I remember the tuna as being the area's best. The 'impulse buys' near the cash register includes some pretty great seven-layer cake. And of course, there is a full selection of Dr. Browns. Also, the owner, Sid, is pretty great. Aside from the fact that you can't eat-in, I think it is the best Deli in town.

I must say, the Star Deli has been a part of my life as long as I can remember. My father used to take my mother and I there for the infamous Corned Beef Special, to which, to this day, I compare any other corned beef sandwich. I must say, when I was much younger, I could never finish mine, but it was always just as good as a leftover. Now that I have grown a bit older, I still visit often, but not as often as I did when I worked a few buildings away. Also, I've always had the greatest service in there. There is hardly ever a long wait in this deli, and if you are a regular enough customer, they tend to remember who you are and what you order. The people who work in there have always been rather friendly. Now, as far as the location goes: like another reviewer mentioned, the parking lot leaves something to be desired. Because it sits on the end of a plaza with a few other carryout restaurants, it seems the motorists are always fighting for a parking space. And, since it is rather close to the intersection of Twelve Mile and Telegraph Roads, traffic, especially during rush hours, can also make accessing Star Deli challenging. Other than that, I must say that the Star Deli is, thus far, my favorite place for corned beef.

The sandwhiches are top level, best in Detroit. Saying that... this place always stresses me out. The parking lot is always a mess. people just park, (in entrances, to the side of the restaurant, block people in, etc.) All of these rude parkers are inside the restaurant bringing their rudeness and negative karma inside. Very pushy inside. The staff, each of them having been there at least 15 years are stonefaces. The choice between sour and new dill pickles are free, but you cannot buy a smile for $200. Again... the sandwhiches are the best, and expensive. The problem is there is no substitute.

Yay! I'm a fan alright. I have been eating sandwiches from Star since 1979, when a friend who worked with me driving AAA tow trucks from 13 Mile and Woodward bought me one. I am especially happy with their extra lean corned beef. I have never been able to find it better anywhere else, and I've had it from Alban's in Birmingham and several deli's in Oak Park. I've even had corned beef in New York City. But no one has given my pallet the pleasure I get from a Star corned beef sandwich. Since leaving Oakland County in 1987, I've made the trip back from several Northern Michigan cities just to spoil myself at Star. I have often thought how nice it would be to be able to buy a sandwich like those from Star a little closer to home. But it just hasn't happened. I will keep making the trip in order to get the BEST corned beef from Star for as long as I have to. Because it just taste that good.....every time. The only reason I don't give Star five stars is their location. For the life of me, I can not understand why the owner(s) at Star wouldn't open other locations. Or at least open a new one with a bigger parking lot and store. How stubborn do ya have to be? But as long as the corned beef is as good as it is, I will put up with the inconvenience of their current location. Keep up the good cooking, Star. We love ya!

First time to a real deli, eh, janelle p.? So, probably the best corned beef outside of Katz's in NYC. 'Nuff said!

The first 4+ rated establishment (with at least a number of reviews) that I was puzzled how it got rated so high by other yelpers. Not bad after over 150 reviews. Maybe my "Harry's Combo" sandwich was off, but I've had much better corned beef/pastrami sandwiches elsewhere. The sandwich was A-OK certainly, but the less than fresh (or freshly made, but dry and crumbly anyway) onion roll and mediocre-quality deli-meat definitely did not contribute to warranting a rating any higher than that based on this one visit. If a deli is going to be as spartan as Star is and still get high marks, their sandwiches have to be a lot better (or more consistent if my okay one was a fluke). Take for example Onion Roll Deli - a total dump, but their pastrami sandwich makes up for all!

Having spent most of my years, both when I was growing up and as an adult, in the Detroit area, I know and love good deli! When I moved to a condo within walking distance of Star Deli, I started using their food as a reward. Paint a room...get a corned beef with chopped liver (extra onions and horseradish). Scour the kitchen...get a turkey with slaw. Scrub the bathroom...get an East Sider (doesn't sound like a typical deli sandwich, but it's amazing). Since I don't want to turn into a huge, old, Italian woman who can only wear big black dresses, I now go to Star only on occasion...but the occasions are always a special treat. Yes, the parking is nasty. Yes, sometimes it's jammed at lunch time. Yes, the staff fluctuates between super sweet and helpful and a bit pushy when they're rushed. Never-the-less, I always am happy I chose to get my deli from the best. Enjoy!

best corned beef EVER. I live in Phoenix now, which has no good Jewish Deli's. Whenever I come home and eat here It really makes me sad to not live in Detroit. I get a reuben and a lot of times I just get a loaf of unsliced bread, buy the corned beef, russian dressing, and SK and make it myself and eat for several days. It's so good, the corned beef is just the right ratio of fat to lean, and even the lean corned beef is really good too ( yes dare i said I liked something lean or lowfat!) . That russian dressing they make it there I believe is super good, not too tangy and ugh I hate anyone who has the ability to drive down the road to eat this right now. damn you all.

Well, this place is conveniently close to my apartment...so, I go here quite often. It's a tiny little deli located at the very end of a small strip mall at 12 mile and Telegraph. There's no seating, not very much parking space and traffic at Tel/12 is always busy. Needless to say their sandwiches are excellent...the portions are great and the prices are very reasonable for the quality that goes into their food. My favorite is the New Yorker corned beef sandwich. I usually get it on an onion roll w/extra onions and swiss cheese. (..mmm) I've never seen this place empty...for such a small place there's surprisingly always a constant flow of customers!!! They open at 7am, which is amazing and they have a great variety of beverages, snacks and deserts...they even sell beer. I defintely recommended Star Deli!!! If you love corned beef Star Deli is a hidden treasure!!! Hey it's a Deli too, so if you want you can just get meat by the pound + bread + cheese and take it home and make your own sandwiches. Save a few $$$!!!.

I really don't think I am being biased because I grew up in the area, but this is the best Deli. Ever! Hands down. Everything I've had here is fantastic. I usually get the corned beef special. My writing could not do it justice! Last time I got it with half the meat "to be healthier" but it was missing something. Meat. I think when you go there, you have to just go for it. I also highly recommend the Tuna salad- It really is fantastic! Seafoood saled- Yumm- Ive tried to recreate this- with minimal success. and the vegetarian chopped liver- sounds gross but it is really great. Go old school Jew without the heart attack... Rye Bread- They'll slice it and you'll love it. I love Star Deli. First thing I want when I get to Detroit!

*sigh* I've been trying to find a deli as good as this one in Los Angeles for the past six years with no luck. Why can't you slice your own bread LA delis, why?! This is the first place I stop when I go to visit my family in Michigan.

Always has been and always will be my favorite deli!! Love the Corned Beef Special (Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese, Cole Slaw, Russian Dressing on Rye). Small and tight squeeze to park and order! But, the staff behind the counter always has a smile on there face and a funny story or song for the time you are waiting. Kinda reminds me of a saturday night live skit! I always except that there will be a wait! But, everyone loves it when I show up at work or home with the Star Deli Brown Bag! The old dill's are my favorite!

I am not a consumer of red meat. So I can't comment on the corned beef. But their tuna salad is worth driving for. Don't know what they do to it but it is the best I have ever eaten. the makings of the best sandwich anywhere - and I do mean anywhere yeah including New York. Insanely good corned beef, pastrami, rye, marla cheese, russian dressing, cole slaw, half sour or new dills. of course, it's really all about the meat - especially the corned beef, steamed to order. oh my. i've been trying to get this guy to divulge his source. he wont' talk about it - he keeps deflecting the conversation to how his deli's sales are the highest grossing per square foot in america (it IS a tiny place-take out meats to compile your own or have them make one for you; it's not a shame to eat in your car in the parking lot). ok, congrats. expand man, expand!!

busy little shop, I didn't know how I stumbled into it, being in town for only one day. I got the harry's pic, pastrami and corned beef, a greek salad, 6 pack of bud and some sun chips. The sandwich looked small, but was delicious. The salad was premade, but had tons of fresh veggies, excellent. The people there are kind which is something that I'm not used to since i'm from southern California, so I like this place. I might go back for lunch tomorrow before I leave Michigan for good.

Slymans in Cleveland is HEADS & SHOULDERS above this. .... I stopped becoz I was going thru corned beef withdrawal. If this is the best in the area - I'd get a better sandwich by having last months leftover bacon put inside some leftover pancakes ..... shrug ..................... when i am in the area again - i will speed up when i get by this local deli i would not go again ..... period.

Love this place. Everything has always been on point. Some of the best pastrami I have ever had. Look I'm in the mood I drive for 20 minutes just to get a couple of sandwiches.

WINNER! This place is great. Excellent corned beef, great roast beef, good onion rolls. One complaint is the rye bread did not have seeds. also, i wish they had seating so I could eat there next time.

This, however, is not enough for me detract any stars as the food more than made up for the hassle.

this review is a repeat. ok so the corned beef is awsome and so is the pastrami. the pickles are what i expect from a good deli. i usually get the corned beef with russian on rye or the turkey with cole slaw and russian dressing on rye. both are huge and get saved for dinner later on at work. i really love these sandwiches and everyone at my work loves them too. we treat ourselves at least once monthly. the downside is that the parking is horrible and there is never a place to put your car. i usually park illegally. also a downside is the women who work there. they're just plain mean and you could say maybe lacking in happiness. i have other adjectives that i use to describe them, but will keep them to myself. the palce still gets 4 stars though because i love the sandwiches that much. love, juston

Slymans in Cleveland is HEADS & SHOULDERS above this. .... I stopped becoz I was going thru corned beef withdrawal. If this is the best in the area - I'd get a better sandwich by having last months leftover bacon put inside some leftover pancakes ..... shrug ..................... when i am in the area again - i will speed up when i get by this local deli i would not go again ..... period.

    (5)

Awesome Rueben sandwich!!! HUGE portions!! Beware that this is not a a typical sit-down restaurant--more like a convenience store with a huge deli-counter. This is an awesome local deli with a huge selection of sandwiches--I'd highly recommend to anyone in the area!

Fantastic food. Great corn beef and pastrami that melts in your mouth. Try the Harry's Combo. This is a classic deli, strictly take-out.

    (5)
  • Vic D.

It's been there forever. It turns out some of the best sandwiches in town. I can't really speak t the salads and such, because I wind up with a sandwich every time. Take-out only. Beware: the parking sucks.

Best tuna salad in Detroit. I haven't lived in the Detroit metro area for a couple years now, but Star is one of the primary things I miss about Michigan. Great corned beef, great onion rolls, great everything. Star, how I miss you.

How does this place only have 4.5 stars? At the very least this place makes some of the world's best corned beef! Every time I visit my Mom I stop in here and grab a couple sandwiches and a pound of corned beef to bring back with me to the west side of the state!

the makings of the best sandwich anywhere - and I do mean anywhere yeah including New York.

  • Chad C.

Enjoy!

  • Linda N.

best corned beef EVER.

Love this place. Everything has always been on point. Some of the best pastrami I have ever had. Look I'm in the mood I drive for 20 minutes just to get a couple of sandwiches.

I am not a consumer of red meat. So I can't comment on the corned beef. But their tuna salad is worth driving for. Don't know what they do to it but it is the best I have ever eaten. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is for the same reason others have mentioned. Lack of convenient parking and staff can sometimes be cranky. (But then...so can I! : - )) Their sandwiches are YUMMY!

The corned beef here makes way for the best reuben I've ever had. I try to go to Star whenever we make our way up to the DM.

WINNER! This place is great. Excellent corned beef, great roast beef, good onion rolls. One complaint is the rye bread did not have seeds. also, i wish they had seating so I could eat there next time.
