It was okay. Dingy? Check. Strange random fish tank? Check. Mediocre food? Check! The food I had was quite peppery. I was not sure that pepper was part of the Thai repertoire....but whatever. Also, the veggies seemed like the icky frozen Chinese restaurant mix. I don't know. If you are in a pinch and really craving some Thai - then sure, it'll do. But if you can spare a few moments, drive to Birmingham.

This is without a doubt the best Thai food around! Awesome staff that will recommend or alter dishes as requested. I have never had a bad meal yet and I have been coming here for years.

This is the restaurant where I discovered the love for Thai food. One of the best Thai restaurants in the Metro-Detroit area! My favorite is their basil fried rice with beef, & I substitute the green peppers for broccoli. I always get my entree hot and with a side of spring rolls. Their shrimp chips are to die for.... Great portions for a reasonable price :)

My boyfriend and I frequent here a lot and it's a wonderful place! Great food, quick service. Freshly ground spices to turn up the heat! Love pineapple fried rice

Went here again to give it another chance. Once again I could see the cooks sweating in the food. Gross. One person came out of the back and wiped the sweat from his face before serving food. Never washing his hands. Unsanitary! Wish I could give it no stars!

This place is great. Best eggplant. And Pad Thai in this area. Everybody in my family loves this restaurant.

Another very good inexpensive Thai place... For $7, I had an excellent scallop and basil fried rice that was a very generous lunch sized portion and properly spiced. Also included was a a decent cup of hot and sour soup. The service was very friendly and fast. I am realizing that if a Thai restaraunt charges more than this, it better be much better. Comparing this to the $11 Bangkok 96 (Dearborn)Fried Rice, the Bangkok Express version is more flavorful, more meaty and equally large sized. Then, there is the excellent B96 soup. Is it worth 4 dollars? Nope. And besides, I was able to walk in at noon on a Friday and get a table without having to wait 30 minutes in a huddled mass next to the dirty aquarium. Its Detroit 2009 people... Value counts!

Bangkok Express is my absolute favorite Thai restaurant of all time! The food, especially the curry dishes, are amazing. I've eaten there about once a week for the past three years and can only remember one time I was not not completely satisfied with my food. The dinner portions are large and everything is very reasonably priced. Great, friendly service. I love this place!!

My bff and I went to this place during lunch because we live Thai food. We were so thrilled how close it is to our school. Unfortunately this place has horrible food so it doesn't even matter. I ordered a bowl of Tom yum soup with tofu and it tasted like water with vegetables in it. It was hardly spicy and I found that disrespectful. Our main dishes were then brought to us. We ordered Von sen and another dish. The Von sen was disgustingly salty and hardly contained any spice. When trying to return the dish, the waitress tried to convince me that the dish is fine because it is their "own recipe" too bad their recipe SUCKS.

My husband and I both got the chicken fried rice. The food was delicious. They did a good job on the spice. I got mild and my husband got medium and the spice level was accurate for both of our dishes. I've gotten food from other places and it seems like you get the same spice level regardless of what you order.

The food alone warrants 5 stars but the heavy set woman that normally works there is the most rudest unpleasant person that I've ever met. She should not be working with people. I only frequent this place when her other sisters are working. I highly recommend the pad thai and garlic chicken.

If you are looking for real Thai food, this is the place to go. It's a no frills, family owned joint. I'm pretty sure the dad stays in the back cooking and the daughter takes care of the front of the house. We usually carry out, but service is friendly and prompt.

Walking in here, I didn't know what to expect. I mean, it's a Thai place across from a Planet Fitness. Pretty typical. The inside was also kind of typical for Asian/Thai places, with booths along the walls and tables in the middle. Some booths needed to be re-upholstered though. Anyways, we ordered a few appetizers to start off - crab ragoon, fried spring rolls (honestly, it's so confusing using the same name at Vietnamese Restaurants), and fried shrimp. -The "spring rolls" were pretty good, although I think the sauce could be a little thicker, and have a little more flavor. -The crab ragoon is not my favorite dish anywhere, so I'm not going to go into that. -The fried shrimp appetizer (see pic) is really good. And the shrimps are big too, which is better than most places. They don't skimp on their shrimp, so I won't skimp them on this review. I decided to skip my usual Pad See Ew and order my other usual Pad Prik King (no carbs after 5pm!). The PPK here is surprisingly good. The sauce is a little thick, which is new for me, and the green beans were really on point. They weren't soggy like they've been left out for a few days - just the right amount of crispiness. The beef was good, but It could be a little more tender. Maybe the chicken would be a little better. Some final notes: -I could use a hot pepper container at my table, in case I wanted more hotness. A lot of Thai places have this. -The fish tank needs to be re-done. I mean, I'm a fish tank guy, so I could just be nitpicking, but it could look a lot better. Overall, the things I pointed out are just personal preferences. What I liked was the quality of the food, and how they don't really skimp you on the portions. My friends also seemed to have enjoyed their food, so that's always a plus in my book. I'd come back, since I have to try my usual of Pad See Ew. Make it rain girl.

Wandered in, a last minute decision as I was headed to the Subway next door. So glad I did. The Drunken Noodle is delicious.

The food is very good, but the place needs MAJOR renovation. All the booths have seats that are terribly worn out and the male waiter, also a cook, sweats like crazy which worries me when he is cooking.

I've picked up carry-out from this place a couple of times now. From what I've seen so far they do a pretty good job. Quick service (no frills), good flavors, large portions, affordable prices, and an uncharacteristically extensive menu selection. Both times I ordered Chiang Rai Eggplant and each time it was the star of the entire meal. This isn't something you typically see on the menu at most Thai places. The only other place I've even tried it is at Bangkok Bistro in Troy where it tastes better (artful even) but also costs 50% more. It's still stellar at Bangkok Express however and I would absolutely recommend trying it. For those of you wondering what this dish is, it's basically a bunch of marinated eggplant mixed into a sweet/spicy thick brown gravy with peppers and onions and little bites of chicken. Mixed with some jasmine rice it's unstoppable. Get out the mouth shovel and dig in. I've also tried their Pad See Ew a couple of times and thought it was well done. They use Chinese broccoli (which is a detail some places miss) and the sauce is nicely caramelized into some decently thick (but not too thick) noodles. Good consistency. I tried their Pad Thai and was honestly not impressed. It was kind of dry and lacking in flavor, with the noodles thinner (and dryer) than I like. Would not order it again from them. The spring rolls were also not great. The spice levels here seem a bit inconsistent. First time I ordered from here the dishes seemed almost perfectly spiced for the levels I specified (if not slightly under-spiced). The next time I went I ordered the same things and the medium dish tasted mild and the mild seemingly lacked heat entirely. All in all, Bangkok Express isn't my favorite Thai place in the area. But I think it's my favorite that I've tried within a couple mile radius of home (Berkley). I will continue to go back for carry-out, though the lackluster dining room does not inspire me to want to eat in. I picked up a carry out menu the last time I was in there and the selection is larger than at most Thai places. They have all kinds of dishes I want to try, many of them being things I have not tried elsewhere. Based on what I've tried so far I give Bangkok Express a very solid 3 stars, however I may have to revise that after trying some of their seafood dishes, as well as their Massaman Curry and Pad Ped and other favorites.

I'm really picky when it comes to Thai food. I have tried many places trying to find the perfect Thai place and I have finally found one! I work down the street and I usually pick up a carry out which is always made fresh and is extremely flavorful. Everything about the food is amazing. I usually get a Gai Long Song which is chicken with a peanut sauce. I have also tried the Pad Thai which is also really good. I love spicy food so I usually go with hot and its the perfect amount of spice for my pallet. When walking in you would never think how amazing the food is because of the ambiance. They do need some work on the interior of the place . Other than that, I love it!

Jeffrey B. and I had a craving for Thai and thought we would try something different for a change. Based on Yelp reviews and the location we settled on Bangkok Express. It took us a while to find it. It's located on the east side of Southfield Rd. in a strip mall behind Big Boy. The decor was a little dated and the wall paper was peeling off the wall. However, the place was large for a Thai place and it was clean. I started with Hot and Sour soup. The soup was thick with a lot of chicken and was steaming hot. However the soup didn't have much flavor and was missing that signature sour "kick". I ordered the Pad Walnut since I've never really heard of it and it sounded good. I got chicken and medium spice. The dish was egg noodles topped with vegetables, chicken and walnuts. Though everything seemed fresh, it was not very impressive. The dish had almost no real flavor other than generic Chinese stir fry taste. Also, in my honest opinion, the spice level was not medium. I dare say that it was under mild. Maybe I'm just used to hotter dishes but it seems like I'm having a hard time getting the right amount of spice. The place was clean and the service efficient. It wasn't a bad place. I was pretty disappointed in the flavors of the dishes. I feel that I could have made the same chinese stir fry at home with frozen vegetables, chicken and ramen noodles. I don't think there is any reason to return when there are many more flavorful restaurants.

This is one of the hidden gems in the area. Very friendly staff and good food. It's hidden in a shopping mall but well worth it. Try the peanut curry, it's one of the best in the area. Always good food and reasonably priced.

The inside of the restaurant could stand to be updated. It was clean but very old decor. The portions are nice sized for both and lunch and dinner. Free soup (Hot and Sour) during lunch is very tasty. Our waiter was very nice and we were seated and served our food promptly. Also they don't offer brown rice which was truly a bummer! I can say the prices are cheaper than most Thai food places I have been to. We ordered two dinner plates, and two side order of spring rolls and our bill was just $20, you can't beat that.

In an effort to expand our Thai horizons, Ryan L. and I ventured out to Bangkok Express on a rainy night. It actually took some time trying to figure out where it was, so if you're searching it's across the street from the Home Depot in the strip across from Mr. Song the milliner. Walking into Bangkok Express was like walking into any Asian restaurant, though without the red and gold. There is a fish tank, and an odd curtain border that runs the perimeter of the walls. Yes, it's fabric, not wallpaper. At first I was concerned because tofu was not listed as a protein choice but as I perused the menu I noticed it elsewhere so when I inquired I was told it wasn't a problem. After some deliberation, Ryan ordered the Pad Walnut and I had the Wai-Wai Noodle. I tried to get a feel for what my dish would be like and I was just assured that it had a special ingredient. This came up three times during the course of the meal; our server kept on insisting that this had a different flavor because of this one ingredient. At one point I jokingly said MSG and she was dead serious in telling that that was not it. . . I still wonder what it was? The dish was egg noodles with bamboo shoots, carrot, broccoli, green onion, bean sprout, and tofu (fried--not offered a choice, but then again I didn't ask). It resembled a dish that one might pick up at a food court at the Chinese station. The flavor was decent but not really interesting or crazy as I was almost expecting with such mystery around the dish. I feel it could have been spicier too--I ordered medium. Before the meal I also had ordered a spring roll which must be served in pairs. They were fresh, filled with carrots, cabbage, and other such typical goodness, but could have used a little more flavor? It may also seem so because the skins of the rolls were really thick so it could have just taken away from the flavor of the inside of the rolls. The plum sauce was fine and quite pink. Shrimp chips were served in a lovely array of colors: white, yellow, orange, pink. Our server was actually very nice and the food was prepared in a timely fashion. I thought that flavor was alright though I could have used more spice. I liked my meal but Bangkok Express will not replace any of my current favorites. What I will say though is that they are mere doors away from Taste of Ethiopia (which I am dying to try) so I am glad I know where that is when I have a moment to go get down with some lentils. A lot of the pictures were not hanging even on the wall too.

Food is AMAZING. Pad Thai was full of flavor. I am quite a connisuer of this dish. pretty picky. they nailed it. Service is SLOW so just dont go when you are in a hurry. even for take out i had to wait 10 minutes to pay while my food was sitting right in front of me. No matter. I will definitely eat here again:)

Some co-workers recommended this place to me so I decided to give it a try. It was okay... not bad but not good. There is better Thai close to the area, consider trying Bangkok city in Southfield. The lunch portions are smaller but very good. I'm a quality over quantity kind of person.

The pad thai (I know, boring) was just fine. I ordered it with tofu as I'm a vegetarian. My only complaint was that the diet coke I ordered tasted really funky, and so did the cucumber salad that we ordered instead of soup. The pad thai was too spicy for mild, but the bill did not break the bank, the waitresses were nice, despite the shabby decor it was very clean. I would consider returning, but it wouldn't be on my list of great Thai places in the area. Sy Thai is not so far from the area, and is much better quality. That being said, I am happy to have tried Bangkok Express.

The cook is sweating so bad all the time and he also brings the food to your table... food is good but after this and seeing another review about the sweaty chef.. I won't come back.

Bangkok's tom yum soup is some of the best around. I don't know if it is authentic or more americanized but the flavor is wonderful. The food is very flavorful. Don't come here expecting to step into a little piece of thailand but if you want a good meal. This place will not disappoint.

This is where I fell in love for the first time...with Thai cuisine, that is. Back in high school my friends forced me to try Thai food and insisted that Bangkok was the best there is. It was love at first bite. Since then, I cannot get enough. Whenever I try a new Thai restaurant, it's Bangkok Express that I compare it with. The Pad Thai is honestly the best Pad Thai ever. It's brown in color (I hate when it's red!) and tastes amazing. The waitstaff is super friendly and the service is great. I have now tried tons of different dishes on the menu and have never had a bad meal. Oh, and the spring roll appetizer is really tasty too!
