The fourth star is assigned for $value when considering the self-serve buffet. If I were judging with a heavier weight on table service, I'd take away two stars! The food itself is 3 stars. The food is OK. A better bet in Kalamazoo, or anywhere compared to West MIchigan is the sophisticated palette-pleasers at Saffron on West Main). Overall, Indian Cuisine serves decent Indian food at a fair price. BUT the overall food profile is greasy-heavy rather than light. OK by me, but be forewarned if that's not your bag. The buffet on Sundays (and lunch I think) is a great value, and a wonderful introduction for your friends who don't know anything about Indian food.

I read the Yelp reviews before going to Indian Cuisine to use a Restaurant.com certificate and did not have my expectations very high. While Indian Cuisine isn't as good as Saffron, it was a fine meal. My daughter got the tandoori murgh chicken. She does not usually like ethnic food but actually enjoyed her dish. She said it was a smidge spicy but not too much for her taste. The rest of the family each got the thalia, which is a full meal on one large rotating platter. Included in my meal was lamb curry, chicken tikka, jinga kebob, reshmi kebob, seekh kebob, rice, a samosa, naan, and a gulab jamun for dessert. It was a ton of food and quite tasty. I think we took home more food than we ate in the restaurant. I would have liked some raitha as a condiment but had to order it separately. The service was friendly but quite slow. I'd like to go sometime for the buffet and see how it compares to Saffron's buffet.

I am editing this review and moving from 5 to 3 stars because there have been a lot of staff changes, including I believe 2 cooks, and the quality is currently not very good. It might change at some point, but at the moment 3 stars might be generous and anyone reading this should be aware that my previous 5-star review was based on an entirely different staff. My latest experience was during the lunch buffet. There were only a couple of options available, and the rice had chicken in it so a vegetarian member of our party couldn't eat it, and there was no bread available. And, frankly, the food wasn't nearly as good as it used to be. If the quality improves, I'll edit the review again. It's possible after the new staff has been around a while things will improve so I am not writing this restaurant off yet. (end edit - edited Feb. 2008) OLD REVIEW FOLLOWS: This food is absolutely fabulous. We ate at a highly rated Indian restaurant in Chicago and we thought our local place, Indian Cuisine, was even better than that. I can't possibly say enough good things. There is a great variety on the menu, with lots of vegetarian options, and milder curries for people new to Indian food. They have a sensational lunch buffet too. When you compare the price of the lunch buffet to the quality, the value can't possibly be beat. They're closed on Mondays so plan accordingly. If you want to try something that is mild and a good thing to try for your first Indian meal, get Chicken Korma (or a vegetable korma if you're vegetarian). It is absolutely sensational. The saag, which has a spinach-based sauce, is also mild and wonderful. We also love the Chicken Makhani and the Chicken Curry, and the Rogan Josh.

I often get take out from Indian Cuisine, and I have loved just about every dish I've tried. The only reason it's getting three stars is because they get weird about rice. Usually I order for one, but I've noticed that when the boyfriend is in town and we get two entrees they give the same amount of rice as they do with a single entree. When I inquired about it they said I could get more rice if I paid $3 for it. Not cool Indian cuisine, not cool. (Plus rice is super cheap.) Moral of story: If you get two dishes for take out, order them separately so you don't get jipped on rice.

To start off with, the buffets are my favorite! So many choices, and there are many vegetarian and vegan options. When you first sit down there is fresh naan made for you, each naan is made as the person walks in. I love that everything is made in house the cheese, sour cream, yogurt, all the chutneys, and the mango lassie (a yogurt based mango shake) to name a few. I like knowing that it is all fresh and not shoved in a freezer for months. Even the deserts are made from ingredients that are made in house by the chef. The food caters to almost every persons palate, there are some spicy dishes and some more mild dishes. The food is made for each individual person, so if you want it spicier they can do that, same with more mild. My favorite dish is eggplant masala, it is not on the menu but if you ask for it they will make. The shrimp masala is also amazing. The food is very reasonably priced and you get a lot of it! When I order from the menu I always bring enough home for 2 more meals. They recently got all new servers. The new servers are amazing! I have never had such good service before! The servers are attentive and friendly without being overbearing. When I go to the buffets I never have a dirty dish sitting in front of me for more than a minute and I never have to ask for more water/pop. It is always filled without asking. The servers are also more than willing to explain the food to you and give great suggestions on what to put together to make the meal better (ex. Raitha with the biriyani) This is my new favorite Indian restaurant! I like it way more than saffron. The portions are bigger, the staff is more friendly and the food is so much more authentic!

Love this place -- I actually prefer it over Kalamazoo's coveted Indian restaurant, Saffron, for a few reasons: 1) The price. For the proportions you get, you simply can't beat Indian Cuisine's prices. For example, when I get my favorite dish, Chicken Korma, to go, I have enough for a few days. The same dish is a few more dollars w/o rice at Saffron. 2) The food. Cuisine's Chicken Korma rivals Indian dishes I've had outside the States. It's perfectly spiced and the yogurt-base always seems to have the right viscosity; it pairs perfectly with an order of Nan. 3) Convenience. This is not a factor for everyone, but Cuisine is maybe a mile away from my house. The not-so-good: 1) The wait staff. There have been several occasions when me and my roommate will sit down and not get acknowledge for five minutes or so. When they finally get around to us? Well, more often than not the waiter is not is a great mood. We're pretty chill dudes so it's not a big deal, but yeah, others tend to not be so forgiving about testy wait staff. 2) The restaurant needs to be updated. The decor is pretty out-of-date and the restrooms are atrocious. In short, I love Indian Cuisine, but there's definitely room for improvement.

This has been a favorite of my husband and I both for years, unfortunately we almost exclusively order take out. The food is absolutely amazing and we've never had a bad meal. We tend to order naan, chicken mahkani, lamb saag, and tandoori most often. Occasionally on a Sunday (such as today) we get brave and decide to stop in for the buffet which is wonderful, almost always to be disappointed by the service. Today we left without eating because we were told we could sit wherever we pleased but even though we were the only patrons, no other greeting was recieved. We sat, and in my case stood because I'm pregnant and expected to be getting right back up, for over 5 minutes as two waitresses and a man who i think may be an owner watched us. That's it. No order taking, no asking if everything was okay, nothing. This isn't new but was especially frustrating today for whatever reason. As i said, we really do love the food so I'm sure we'll continue ordering in the future though probably not for some time.

This is the place I first ate Indian food many years ago when it opened first on Portage Road. I would make it a weekly thing and loved the food and great staff. We have since moved away and I've eaten at dozens of different Indian restaurants since. Upon returning to visit I stopped for lunch this week. 12:30 and I was the only one there. Many of the buffet servers were empty. Most of what they did have was not even very warm. Things look bad for this once great restaurant. It's too bad when you have a good thing going and let it fail over time.

Excellent buffet, Best part is, whole day buffet on Sunday. This place has one of the best chicken biriyani's I've had in the US. Excellent staff and decent environment.

This place has the best indian food in Portage. It is in a good location, near the mall. The prices are good. It lacks atmosphere in the restaurant but everyone there is very polite. We usually get take out or do the buffett. The food reminds me of the food my indian friend's mom makes.

You can definitely find better in Kalamazoo. I have not tried the buffet so I cannot attest to that, but the dinner service was only mediocre. The food was not great (bay leaves and giant seeds were left inside the curries) and the service wasn't good (the waitress didn't know what poppudums were!). Notably, there was no alcohol served. I don't know if this was permanent or just on the day we were there but they told us they did not serve any alcohol any longer.

It's an avg. Indian restaurant...the food is not that good and the ambiance is not very pleasant either...it has good South Indian food but it's still a bit over priced for the quality and quantity of the food...

I came back here with the girlfriend recently because she was craving something that Saffron doesn't have on their menu, and we had a pretty solid 3 star meal. I had the buffet while she ordered from the menu. This place is still rough around the edges and does not have food quality to match Saffron, but it is better than the last time I was here. They also got rid of the plastic tablecloths!

Excellent Dosa buffet Thursday night. Enjoyed it with family of 9.

$13.95 per person for the Sunday buffet, and $6 for children. They had soup, salad, a few chutneys, three rices (basmati rice, a lemon rice, and chicken biyrani), chicken Korma, lamb vindaloo, veggie curry, an eggplant and potato dish, naan, pakora, a chocolate pudding (powdered mix variety with fruit cocktail thrown in), and a rice pudding for their Sunday buffet. Food was lukewarm but most of the flavors were good. What I liked about their buffet is that they had a few genuinely spicy dishes. Indian Cuisine is an adequate buffet with a decent variety of dishes. Nothing spectacular, but it works in a pinch.

I came here on a Tuesday night at 8 o'clock, as a visiting traveler from out of town. I asked Siri if there was an Indian Resturant near me, and this is what she came up with. First, there was no one else in the place on a Tuesday evening at 8. I guess the dinner rush must be really early. This place is tucked away off the main road, and not easy to find. Use your GPS, and then look ALL THE WAY IN THE BACK to find it. The service was fast (of course- I was the one one) and the waitere attentive. I ordered a Roti (Average- Whole wheat naan), and Chicken Tiki Masala (Barely average- not very spicy at all)- the old standby for my tastes. I also ordered a Mango Lassi to drink (good), and asked for Gulab Jamin for dessert. The waiter informed me that the did not have any Gulab Jamin, (disappotined), but that he could suggest another dessert. (He did- Ras Malai more on the later). The Papadom chips were fresh and good- and I was especially impressed with the "hot pickle" spicy chutney presented. It was full of flavors that I did not recognize, and that absolutely delighted my pallet. In fact, that was perhaps the best part of the meal- the spices were an unexpected flavor explosion. As for the Chicken Masala- very plain, not very spicy. If I were to choose again, I think I would be more adventuresome and try the Vindaloo, or another selection. The Masala was o.k.., but that was all I could say for it. It was joined with Basmati rice (ok, not great- but then again it was 8 o'clock at night). The Roti naan bread was hot and fresh, and was a good choice. The Mango Lassi drink was a good choice too- as the gentle yougurt smooth mango drink cools off the variety of spices in the rest of the meal. I would give the chicken just 2 stars, and the Lassi four or four and a half. The dessert arrives after the main meal. I am not sure exactly how to describe "Ras Malai", but it is a sort of a ball of paneer cheese soaked in milk, sweetly immersed in chilled syrup, flavored with a dash of cardamon. To me it was ok, but not great. I would have preferred Gulab Jamin, but you take what you find and enjoy. Service was solid, flavors were ok- not great. I give it, overall, three to thrre and a half stars. Solid, but not great. Enjoy.

I tried out Indian Cuisine because I had a terrible craving for butter chicken (chicken makhani) and didn't feel like driving up to Grand Rapids. (Unfortunately, Saffron doesn't have it on their menu.) The service was mediocre. We walked in for lunch on a Saturday, and although they were not busy, no one helped us right away. After a few awkward minutes of standing around (we wondered if we were just supposed to seat ourselves), someone noticed us and gestured to an employee to assist us. After being seated, we waited a while again for our order to be taken, and our water glasses sat un-refilled throughout the meal. There are these cool picture windows that look into the kitchen; however, because the kitchen looks kind of messy and unappealing, this didn't work in their favor. I found the women's bathroom really clean, but oddly one of the stall doors had its lock installed backwards, so the door couldn't close let alone lock. How does this happen? The butter chicken satisfied my incredible craving, but it wasn't the best I've had by any stretch of the imagination. It looked and smelled great but sadly lacked a bit in flavor. I still enjoyed it. There was an Indian couple seated at an adjacent table. When they ordered the vegetable kabobs, the waiter told them to reconsider. Apparently, it's Americanized kabobs for their non-Indian patrons. I keep wavering between two and three stars for this place. On one hand, the experience wasn't great. On the other, I walked out thinking the food was adequate and that I'd probably end up returning the next time the butter chicken craving hit. I'm going to give it three (after all, I've only been there once and should give it the benefit of the doubt) with a bookmark to update this review if necessary upon multiple visits.

Are they still open? Because I would guess not, I tried calling four times in the last few months to get to-go and NEVER an answer. Their website is down too, so....how am I supposed to get take-out?

My husband and I come here basically only for the chicken korma and the naan, both of which are amazing. No, the atmosphere isn't great (could use a facelift for sure), but the music is fun, and the new servers have been great so far. The chips (papadum) that come before your meal are fantastic, especially with the tamarind sauce.

This is an awful Indian restaurant. There was one waitress working 5 tables She was clearly overwhelmed. We had to wait 25 minutes to even get water. When our dishes finally came out, our rice and samosas were both cold. Not only did they not make a new one as requested, they charged us for it. I could have overlooked the timing and the maybe the cold food. I used to be a coo and my wife used to be a waitress, so I know some days things just don't go right. But to refuse to correct a mistake AND make us pay for it. Way to lose a whole family of customers for life for just a few bucks. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone...ever. I'm not a huge fan of the food at Saffron either, but at least I've never experienced terrible customer service over there.

This place is underrated. Good authentic south Indian based cuisine. The lamb biryani and vindaloo are my favorite dishes here. The service is competent and friendly. The buffet on Sunday typically has more choices than other days.
