I've been curious about this place ever since we moved to Pontiac. Fresh fish? Live lobsters? Here?? We're constantly back and forth on Woodward ave, and the outer appearance of this place smacked of I'm-a-dingy, hole-in-the-wall market which usually translates to: I'm a fantastic place to buy food. What I couldn't tell from the outside is that People's Fish & Poultry Market is also a kitchen. You can pick your fish (from a myriad of types--whole fish with skin eyes and all staring up at you from beds of ice) and they will cut it and cook it for you for just a few dollars more! This option is available for any of the items they sell. We were hurrying home, but grabbed a salmon filet and a menu. The filet was super fresh and cooked up beautifully. And the menu (which cooked up less beautifully) lists soups, salads, sandwiches and boxes to go and has a very southern feel (okra, hush puppies, seafood gumbo...) but again, they can cook anything to order. Be aware: the dining space is a little tight, maybe awkward for a big group, perfect for a lunch date. Or, why not make the kitchen come to you? They offer catering and, get this--lobster bakes, clam bakes, or pig roasts at your location. Happy Birthday to me! But how do they survive in this run-down Michigan town? How do they have cases and cases of so much fresh product available? Daily? Well the owner informed us that People's Market is also a restaurant distributor. Cha-ching. So now you know. If you want the fish your favorite restaurants want, come to People's in Pontiac and make it yours.
