On a recent visit, I called a bunch of local restaurants to see if they served smelt, and this place said they did. It is the best smelt platter I've ever had. The smelt was breaded, not battered. They were big smelt, with their fins still attached. I got a nice big platter and they were cooked perfectly! Prices are a good value for the quality of the food. I'm not terribly fond of the ambience. It's a bit noisy and the seating is a bit rustic, but the food will bring me back!

Sorry folks, I just was not impressed at all. Armed with my Travel Zoo deal, hubby and I were looking forward to dinner here last Friday night. The weather was crazy hot so we opted to dine inside. If it was a bit cooler, the outdoor tables with colorful umbrellas did look nice. Our waitress was a little on the cold, non-chatty side and didn't seem to care when we mentioned it was our first visit. As was the owner, who sat down with one group of diners but didn't even glance our way. We felt very much like first time diners in a place where 'everybody knows your name'. The coupon was for an appetizer to share, 2 entrees and 2 drinks. I was slightly bummed to find out the only iced tea they offered was the nasty pre-made, too sweet variety. Fine, give me a coke and an order of hush puppies for the appetizer. There's something about hush puppies that I just love...well, most hush puppies. But not these, that were burned when they came out. We did mention it to the waitress who took them away. She came back a few minutes later to inform us that they don't make them fresh and because they are frozen they tend to burn before they are cooked all the way through. Um....not a good sign. We asked which of the apps were made in house, not very many of them were, which is disappointing. Idk, maybe that set the tone for the rest of the meal. Hubby and I both got shrimp and scallops fried, me with french fries (hey...I knew I was going to clog some arteries the minute we walked in the door!) and him with the red skin potatoes. You know something is wrong when we both agreed the cole slaw and potatoes were the best parts of the entree! By the way, the Travel Zoo deal was $25 and we were given a bill for $9 something which was the tip (and I'm all for that - I'm sure waitresses every where cringe when they see people walk in with these deals - we always make sure to tip very nicely on what would have been the full price of the meal). My point is - this was a $35 meal and it just wasn't worth it. I doubt I'll be going back.

The wife and I went there last week. Had a "restaurant.com" coupon, and wanted to try this place since we were fasting for Easter. We both had the fish and chips. He puts a nice cornmeal breading on his fish. The waitress said it was cod. I have my doubts about that though. A bit thin for cod. Looked more like Tilapia. The taste of the fish was very mild, as is the case of Tilapia, however, the breading was very good and crunchy. The chips (fries) we large and very good. All in all, it was a nice meal. I hope that if he is reading this review, that he takes another look at his cod. If that's what it was. I know my fish VERY WELL. I hope he's not fooling people by using different fish than advertised. We'll have to go back one day and try something else. His coleslaw was very good and seasoned very well (with creamy dill). His prices are reasonable and fair.

This is a very small. locally owned, casual dress type place that serves up plentiful and fresh fish cooked to order for a very reasonable price. If you want to be even cheaper you can go to restaurant.com , buy a gift certificate and give this place a whirl. Every main dish is consistently very good in here. A lot of people swear by the fish and chips but I prefer the grilled scampi style shrimp and scallops or one of the rotating specials. They also have quite tasty frog legs, happy clam strips and absolutely delicious smelt if you are a fan of that sort of thing, which I am. The redskins and the rice are nice side dishes and I will agree the cole slaw in here is a stellar version with the dill. They feature seafood gumbo which I think needs a darker roux and clam chowder which is too thin for my taste so I would skip the disappointing soups. They also talk up their baja style fish tacos, which I have not sampled yet. Don't expect much atmosphere, this is strictly no frills, very relaxed and most of their business seems to be from carry out. About twenty different varieties of fish are on display and you can pick exactly what you would like cooked to your preference. There are places to sit and eat but not many so I would not count on a seat at prime time dining hours. Service is generally friendly and attentive but I always dine at off hours so take it with a grain of salt. Mondays is all you can eat fish and chips, if you feel your arteries can handle that, more power to you.

Great fish & chips. The owner Vince sat down near us and we chatted about fish (what else?) and was very friendly. I'll be going here again.

Absolute true story: we were looking for a place to get fish, and my husband wrote this place off because the overall review was just ok. I took a look at some of the specific reviews, saw Liz W's positive review, and KNEW all would be well with the world. If Liz says it's good, by golly, it's good. I love cornmeal breaded fish, but most places simply don't have it. Instead, most places serve the much thicker (and greasier) beer batter. This place has the cornmeal breading. Yum frickin' yum. The coleslaw was also very tasty, with a generous amount of dill. I also enjoyed the hushpuppies, but at $6.25 for 6 quarter-sized balls of fried cornbread, I'll probably give it a pass next time.

Not a big fan. Small portion and not the best tasting. Really had higher expectations. Good service.

So, on the hunt for a new fish place since Lent has begun and the local paper outed one of our favorite spots as being the tops - so now we can't get near it (thanks)! We had stopped in before, but the restaurant is tiny and there are only about eight tables, and we were not inclined to wait outside, or inside staring at the dining patrons from an uncomfortable distance. But last night we got lucky, we came in just as another table was leaving, perfect timing! They have lots of fish options, you choose fried or grilled - heads up that "grilled" is lightly battered and put on the flat top griddle, not open flame cooking - that was a surprise when my hubby's fish arrived. I went for the classic fish and chips - again - warning!! These are not beer battered fillets, this is more like an "up north" fish fry with a cornmeal type batter. It was very good, but you will be disappointed if you are expecting puffy greasy batter. Keeping with the northern Michigan theme they offer perch and other freshwater locals. I am not usually a fan of coleslaw, but I'll be a monkey's uncle I ate the whole little bowl! It is fantastic, obviously home made with tons of fresh dill, I may have to get the recipe, or see if they sell it in large quantities for my next summer bbq so that I can pass it off as my own.

Where's the fish?! I ordered a fish dinner and got the thinnest slivers of fish I've ever seen. I paid almost $10 for tasty slaw and a small amount of fries - but hardly any fish I was going to give it 3 stars as a boost due to the great selection of fish, but my main reason for visiting was for the fish so I gave it the correct amount of stars for what I received The owner was very friendly If I ever decide to return Ill ask him how many ounces of fish ill be getting with various orders so I won't be surprised again

Food was good. Large portions so I have no complaints about that. However, I read a review that said the batter was salty. I would have to agree with the reviewer. It wasn't offensive, but they could have backed up a bit on the sodium. I will give them another shot and order again at some point.

When I'm in the mood for fish and chips or sone fried tilapia shrimp scampi, oysters, etc, this is the place I'll go. The owners are very very very good people. Friendly, smiley, and all together it gives a nice home like atmosphere. Its not for the critic, nor for the super food snob, though its very good food. This is a great place for those who like to eat, while they enjoy the company of friends. I love it. Why only four? Well, No place is perfect . And until I find that place... four is my highest rating.

Ok so it's a fish market proclaiming fresh fish of many types - get it grilled or get it fried. We wandered in here starving and not wanting to venture about in Plymouth much and had a decent meal. The service was nice. We sat at an outdoor table. The outdoor space seemed to effectively double this tiny place! I ordered shrimp and scallop scampi. I really enjoyed the coleslaw served with it, just typical veg with a lighter dressing and some dill, nice. The shrimp and scampi were fresh and well cooked but the seasoning, or lack of, just didn't tickle my fancy. The steak fries I got as my side (I know, I'm addicted) were awesome and very Red Robin-esque. All in all, ok but I don't think this is a place I would crave...

This is how seafood should be! Reasonably priced fish in a simple little dining room. Everything they have is on display in the deli case. When they run out of a fresh item it comes off the menu. I heard they make fresh seafood gumbo every day but I will have to try it next time. I was going to go for the fish and chips, but the server mentioned trout and that is my favorite so I switched at the last minute. It was nicely pan-fried with just a little crunchy breading on the skin side. I'm glad they left the skin on because its the best part! Everything comes with decent peppered coleslaw and one side. I chose fries and they were fine but nothing special. It is very hard to choose just one thing off the menu, so they need a sampler platter. Also they only have one high chair.

I usually try and visit more than once before a review, but it was good so what the heck. I would really give about 3-1/2 stars, but I'll stick with 4 because I hate to round down, especially for a small neighborhood joint like this with such friendly service. A lot of people have commented about the cole slaw. There's very little sweetness or vinegar bite to the dressing, and there is a lot of dill. It's different, but I liked it very much. Not generally a fan of steak fries, but I forgot to ask for something different. They were fine. As to the fish. Technically, it's cod. I asked. It's actually Alaskan Pollock, which is a species of cod, but a smaller fish than the Atlantic cod you envision. It's mild tasting and fresh, with a light cornmeal breading, perfectly cooked and flaky. BTW, Alaskan Pollock and Atlantic Pollock aren't the same fish. Not the same species or even genus. Also, if anyone found a $5 dollar bill here today at around 12:35 it's mine.

When we first moved to Plymouth someone recommended this place to me and was I glad I tried it. We have gotten take out only form here several times. The owner is very friendly. I think the hush puppies are some of the best I have had. I love the scallops and we have also tried clams and crab cakes from here. I usually get the redskins instead of the fries. My husband loves walleye and they have it here. I have never gotten anything not fresh. Last time we tried the lake perch and it was very good. I recommend this place - its not fancy by any means but the fish is fresh and the taste in my opinion is very good.

I am surprised that Plymouth Fish Market doesnt have higher reviews.... It is one of my favorites, first and foremost because they have the tastiest scallops that I have ever had. I almost never make it to the meals because I start out with the scallop appetizer and a crab cake.... and then usually back it up with another order of scallops and then more scallops. I dont need to mess around with anything else :) I have been here many times.... let me give you some of the highlights... I love the little shop, intimate feel of the place. I like the owner, who is always there to share a laugh with. His staff is usually younger high school or even college kids that have been trained right. They are always attentive and constantly filling up the ice cold lemon water to accompany any meal (no liquor license, so I will stick to water...) I have tried the blackened catfish and it was so tender, so moist! The steak fries are also delectable... yep, fries can be delectable. It seems to be a theme here... the slaw is fabulous! I, like other reviewers, do not like coleslaw but the dill and some added pepper make this crisp cabbage just tantalizing!! The shrimp and scallop scampi is perfect. The amount of butter, the light breading and garlic is just so perfect!! If I ever venture out to an actual entree, this is it! The grilled salmon is also incredible.... All in all, I give this a 5 star!

Friday afternoon shopping and needing some nourishment brought us into this quaint, small, with the owner/cook on the premises establishment. Finding, Vince, the owner to be very friendly and customer oriented. Started out with shrimp scampi that was the best I have ever encountered. Exceptionally fresh ingredients with the garlic still lingering on my breathe and memory, I will be back for this item. Unfortunately, the scallops were not available. My S.O. was not thrilled with his New England clam chowder. Saying that it was too thin and too little of clams could be found. We both ordered the fish and chips. I was surprised to find a cornmeal (I think) breading. I'm accustomed to a beer batter breading. Never the less I did enjoy this version. The fish was accompanied by a massive amount of steakfries. And a coleslaw that had a lighter version of dressing than is the usual, which I found to be very good. Nether of us would order the fish and chips again. But as I previously stated, the shrimp scampi is on my mind and breathe.

I have been here twice now, and each visit has been great. My first visit I was surprised how small the place was, maybe 6 tables in total, but this made the place even better for me. It reminded me very much of a little market you would find in Cape Cod. The menu was simple and basic and offered a decent amount of choices. I had the Captain's Fish and Chips and thought the cod was very tasty and not dry at all, the portions were decent as well. The prices were decent for a seafood place, and the restaurant had coupon mailers and enough specials to chose from that provide a bit of relief to the economically conscious patrons. The restaurant was clean and the service was great. On a side note, going to the restroom was an odd experience as the layout of the place is (from wall to wall) dining room, market counter, prep and kitchen area with a hall leading to the back store room and office area. The bathroom is just past the kitchen so you have to walk right through these areas in order to get to it. It kind of reminded me of Buca di Beppo where you walk through the kitchen to get to the dining room, you feel out of place there even though you are supposed to be there. All in all this was a neat little place that did what the were supposed to do, and left me feeling comfortably full and satisfied. I will go back again.

When we moved to Plymouth a few years ago, the Plymouth Fish Market was one of the first restaurants we went to. I don't know why I haven't posted a yelp about it earlier but I'm making up for that now. The Plymouth Fish Market is a little spot in the Old Village that has incredible fresh fish and the best coleslaw I have ever had. This coleslaw is seriously good. I don't even like coleslaw all that much, I usually ask what I can get instead of slaw when presented with it at most restaurants. Not here. The slaw at the Fish Market is wonderful. It's got a lot of dill in it and has the perfect consistency, its far better that any I have ever had. Everything here is great though. I have never had a meal here that I disliked. I also can't think of too many meals I completely finished due to the generous portions. The Fish Market has a wide array of fin fish and shellfish and offer them cooked in a variety of ways. I'm really partial to the breaded and fried fish. This isn't the pasty beer batter you get at a golf course fish fry, but a mix of cornmeal and spices that coat the fish just right and has the perfect amount of crunch to contrast the texture of the fish.

Disappointing would be a kind description of this experience. My scallops were supposed to be grilled, but they were heavily breaded and fried; the fish and chips consisted of more heavy breading and little fish; the chips were large, maybe to accommodate for lack of fish, the green beans were fresh-right out of the can! Once was too much!

My husband and I recently grabbed carryout for us, our 18 month old son, and my parents- it may sound like the beginning of a joke or a bad review but honestly for all of our differing taste buds it was the perfect one stop shop. The Walleye an calamari which we split were delicious! There is nothing worse than chewy calamari or walleye that is over fried. This was perfect! The redskin potatoes tasted homemade and the marinara did as well. Yummy! We are going to try and buy raw fish next and see how the quality is there.

Is there a place you absolutely crave? Did you recently get your tonsils out and you start dreaming of food that you wish you could eat, but you can barely stomach mashed potatos? This is my place, right in the middle of Old Village. The food here is consistently good, I just have a few problems with it- I always want some of everything. But it's simple, you pick your seafood (fresh fish comes in a couples times a week), you pick how you want it (grilled or deep fried) and you pick your side (steak fries, rice, red potatoes) and moments after- you get your side of coleslaw. It's creamy, dill covered and ridiculously good. The fish and chips is seriously the best I have ever had, on mondays you can eat them all you want for one price as well! And on Tuesdays, you can munch on the house specialty- Fish Tacos. Fresh cod, fried and sat in between a double layer of taco shells held togeth with beans. Add on your Pico di gallo and my friends, you'll be licking your plate. Some of my absolute favorite fishes however are Whitefish, Grouper, Lake Perch and Tilapia- mostly grilled and any of the side choices are good ones- all with lots of Tartar sauce. Also! They run a catering business called All Seasons Catering, the Chicken Piccata is delicious! So check it out, get some fresh fish to take home to cook or have them do it

Staff friendly. Food not so good. Shrimp scampi with only a hint of garlic, dry. Calamari plentiful but tasted like maybe the grease it had been deep fryed in was old. After all the reviews about the coleslaw, I was looking forward to it. But that wasn't my cup of tea either.

If you want fresh.perfectly prepared seafood and don't want to spend a small fortune at some high end "Seafood Restaurant" look no furher than Plymouth Fish Market. Vince and his staff never fail to impress. He has an awesome catering service as well that can provide all his great food to any function large or small. Trust me, you will not be disappointed!

Where do I start,,,hmmm? Me and a friend went to this restuarant at 7pm on a Monday night and had an interesting experience to say the least. We had a $25 restuarant.com certificate so we had to order $35 of food between us so this is what happened. The very nice waitress came to our table and I was to order first. I chose the halibut. Strike,, they were out of that. That's o.k. let me have the swordfish instead. Sorry,, try again,, strike 2. While giggling I order the Orange Roughy. And yes you guessed it,, strike 3. So I handed the reigns over to my buddy so he could order and I could peruse the menu to decide what my 4th choice would be. He orders the Grouper, which they did have, and chooses it to be grilled. He then orders a cup of Seafood Gumbo for himself and the 2 appetizers for us to share which were a Crabcake and Hushpuppies. Wow,, he made it through his order unscathed so I decided to play it safe and ordered the Grouper as well,, grilled. Uh oh,, our waitress returns rather quickly to tell us,, drum roll please,, that they were out of Hushpuppies. We laugh and ask if they have Calamari. They did and we went with that. Our Coleslaw came out first and we really liked it. Creamy mayo dressing with some dill added which was a nice touch we thought. Maybe our luck was changing. Our appetizers show and our luck ends. The Crabcake looked like a dark brown hockey puck and the interior texture was pure mush. The Calamari tasted ok but just like the Crabcake we inferred that it seemed to us that these items were store bought frozen foods. Our entrees arrive and from first glance it seemed to me that our Grouper had been pan-fried instead of grilled. At this point we just went with the flow and didn't say anything. The first bite of the Grouper bombarded my tasted buds with butter. It was over powering. The fish itself was cooked well but every few bites would hit me with that butter bomb. My Red Skin Potatoes were good and my friend enjoyed his Steak Fries as well but the damage had already been done. I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Ate here once and not again. Ordered the grouper grilled w/ boiled redskin potatos and was not good at all. The fish was loaded with butter and my meal was more greasy than the fried oyster appetizer that was ordered before. I have had much better fried oysters than this place. Service was not that good either. Sadly disappointed.

Lightly battered fish, but the problem is, it's also too light on the fish. Very thinly sliced. Batter is kinda salty. The coleslaw is the best. It was on my list so I had to check it out, but no need to return.
