Went in for lunch with a few friends during lunch. It was an absolute treat. Waitress was sweet and sushi was fabulous. We tried about 6 different rolls and you could taste the freshness. My absolute favorite was the Fatty Roll (I highly recommend it!!!) I will definitely be coming back and would like to come during dinner time to enjoy the atmosphere. Looks like a cute date spot too.

Several times a year I find myself in the Detroit Metro area visiting family and friends, and while a lot has changed over the years in this city, one thing remains constant and it's the one place I insist on eating while in Detroit - Shiro Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Shiro in Japanese means Castle or White and it's a fitting name for the historic Rogers Mansion that now houses this restaurant. The service here is always top notch, the waiters and waitresses never miss a beat, even during their peak dining periods. The food is without question some of the finest Japanese food that I have come across in the Detroit Metro area. It would take much too long to describe in detail everything I've had on the menu over the years, so here are a few of my favorites. The wasabi shumai are one of those rare delicacies. In all of dining experiences nothing has ever come close to these soft, perfect cooked, midly spicy wasabi wrappers filled with minced pork and vegetables. Served alongside a smear of wasabi mayonnaise and an onion and pepper relish, these are worth the trip all by themselves. The have a wonderful range of unique and flavorful vegetarian sushi including their AACC Roll (avocado, asparagus, cucumber topped and a crunchy spiced batter.) One of my favorite rolls is their Fresh Fashion Roll (roasted red pepper, pickled cucumber, pickled ginger and shredded radish all wrapped up with a cucumber. Their Hibachi grills are only served at lunch, which is a shame as they are truly one of the best parts of their vast Japanese menu. One word of warning, they get very busy, so do yourself a favor and call for a reservation, even if it's just for two people. You don't want to miss your chance at getting in. It's simply that good. Online at: shiro-restaurant.com Accepts Reservations: Yes via telephone 248-348-1212 Food: 5.0 Paws Service: 5.0 Paws Overall Rating... 5.0 Paws With love from my dog bowl to yours....Happy eating. I regret skipping Shiro for the last 12 years I've lived in metro-Detroit, especially since I lived so close to it for 10 of those years! The location is just off the retail, chain trail farther north on Novi Road, so it is convenient to find, but easy to get in and out of. We went for lunch during the week. They have a great lunch menu that is reasonably priced and has a good variety. Service at lunch was good, though they remained fairly busy throughout. I loved the bento lunch. It's a great way to try a variety of dishes to prepare for future visits. It's also a good way to gently push one's palate by trying a few dishes just outside of the usual comfort zone. The bento lunch started with delicious, gently spiced miso soup and a fairly standard salad. The box itself contained a variety of cold and hot dishes that went well together. There was a cold mashed potato salad that tasted just like traditional American barbecue with the difference in the mashed texture, a deep fried mushroom with a cream cheese filling, and several pieces of a fresh California roll. It also included marinated tofu with Napa cabbage kimchee, and a beef stir fry type dish. Many of the dishes were garnished with just the right vegetables or herbs to give an added crunch or slight change in flavor. My companions both enjoyed house rolls: double crab and fatty. Everyone was full and happy after lunch. I'm looking forward to checking out Shiro more.

Oh Shiro what has happened? It been about a year since the last we've eating here and it was the first place that we decided to go out without the new baby. The food and service has always been exceptional in the past so the choice was easy. This time exceptional was lacking in all categories. After being seated it took 20 minutes to take our drink order after multiple people kept asking if we've been helped. It was another 10 minutes till the bottle of wine showed up. Believe it not we were so happy to be out to dinner without child that weren't upset waiting 30 minutes for a drink. We ordered the chicken wakatori appetizer which was quite delicious. That was the high point as from there it went down yet again. For dinner we asked for the Omakase sushi which leaves it to the chef as to what sushi to serve. In our case it seems he used this opportunity to clear out old fish. Kroger may not have the fanciest or purist sushi but at least it is of good and consistent quality. It would have been the better choice. There was a moment of almost redemption when the sushi chef handed us some sort of braised oyster that was quite delicious but alas it was a one off. The best thing on the the plate of sushi that was served to us was the spicy tuna roll which is easy to make taste good with the spicing that is used. That being said no other restaurant would serve a spicy tuna roll as Omakase. Though overpriced spicy tuna was probably the best part of the entrée it wasn't enough for things to go further downhill. As we were seated at the sushi counter there wasn't much space for all the dishes that piled up. I finally resorted to taking all my wife's dishes and stacking them in front of me. Even on the seldom occasion that someone came around the dishes would still remain and the wife's water glass would still lack said liquid. So I gave her what was left of mine. To top things off at the end they asked us to move in order to make room for another group. Normally not a big deal but if you're going to stop by with such a request at least refill the water or grab a dish or two. I asked for the check instead. At the same I listed to the table behind us tell, not ask, the manager to remove the price of the sushi from the bill. Not a good sign. I wish I could say that this is the end of the story but alas it is not. When the check finally arrived I asked what the issues with the night were and the gentlemen said it was all the hostesses fault as to seating too many people or the like. The entertaining part of that is the fact that he is the one who sat us. His mind was definitely somewhere else. We still tipped at 20% as a tip in the US is really a servers pay more than a expression of the level of service that was provided. I wish I would have checked recent yelp reviews as it looks like they have been having issues as of late. I hope they fix them as the location is beautiful and the sushi in the past has been very good.

I've been coming to shiros for about 7 years now and it never gets old. Absolutely love it. The staff, the environment, the historical restored home it's in. Great food, friendly and helpful staff! We even order take out from here! By far my favorite sushi restaurant around! We don't eat sushi from anywhere else around! If I can't have Shiros then I'm going Aspen CO! Because that's the next best place! Haha WE LOVE YOU SHIROS!

Came here for dinner with the family on Mother's Day and this place was not prepared at all! I reserved a specific room 2 weeks in advance which is nothing special and I've sat in before and it was not available when we got there. We sat at a table for 6 and the waiter tried adding chairs and only fit 8 when I reserved for 9 and walked away. Umm am I supposed to sit on someone's lap? We ended up having to add on a table after waiting for the waiter to come back. My mom arrived and asked where her dinner party was seated and the hostess said "just look around." I asked for water multiple times and when our appetizers came, and we asked for plates the waiter said "just wait a bit, we ran out." What kind of restaurant runs out of plates?! Horrible service! Our waiter, Chris, couldn't have been any worse. He was just not fit to be a waiter. I've been to this restaurant a few times and every time I come, the quality of the food gets worse, and the specials are always the same! We ordered a lot of rolls for all of us. It was just average. The less fancy places have better sushi. We didn't get soy sauce plates until we were half way done with the food. We ordered 13 rolls and appetizers (don't judge, we were hungry!). I personally hate cream cheese on my sushi so I didn't like the fatty roll. Spicy tuna tasted the same as everywhere else and the other rolls were just plain and average. Of all of our food, the picante tuna martini (everyone's favorite appetizer), the cancun roll and the shake shake boom roll were the only rolls we enjoyed. I think the fact that we were getting horrible service, made us not enjoy anything. Good costumer service and being prepared is very important and Shiro not having any of this ruined our family's experience here. We will never come back here again. The cool thing about this restaurant is the whole story behind the "haunted mansion." Apparently it was a mansion and ghosts and other creepy things appeared at this mansion and it was sold and turned into a restaurant. The ambiance is really cool because you are literally having dinner inside a different room of a mansion but from our experience that's about the only good thing here.

Love the ambience and atmosphere of this place, absolutely love that it's in a haunted mansion. My friends and I didn't make reservations, it is a Wednesday night and we were seated within five minutes. And then the wait happened for our waitress to come. Oh my goodness, took her over 20min after we mentioned something to the hostess. She seemed a bit overwhelmed and out of it. But still, if I ask you if you have this type of liquor, you should know. Every question that I asked her if she had this or this was replied with "I'm not sure, let me go check." Irritating. She was very sweet and pleasant though. Not rude at all. The food came and it was not bad, not to impressed though. The best part was the martini's, strong and tasty the way I like it. And the dessert was wow, amazing how delicious it was.

Have to be honest and say I have not tried the food yet-- we just went for some sake at the bar. Of course, it's a beautiful building and interior, and I loved the little sneak-away bar area. It's intimate, closed off from the rest of the dining room and provides a great little ambiance. The bartender was semi friendly and semi attentive, which was fine. I felt that maybe he didn't want to disturb our conversations, but he seemed to be moving very slowly overall. I found it also strange that although they offered about 7-9 different sakes, they served them in wine glasses... strange, and ick. Just curious, who drinks sake out of a wine glass...? They were priced moderately though, and while enjoyable, was a totally different experience drinking sake out of wine glasses. That is what primarily stood out to me in this visit. I took a look at their menus and wasn't blown away by their selections but I did become curious at how their food would be. The building itself piqued my curiosity enough to want to go back-- but it'll be really hard choosing to go there for sushi with Ajishin down the street.

Finally had the chance to check Shiro out, and it turned out to be a huge disappointment. First of all, after we said how many people were dining, the host just left, without saying a word, two minutes later he came back and asked us to wait. We were seated pretty fast after that. After reading through the menu, my husband and I needed more time, which we told the server, so he didn't come back for another 10-12 minutes. Ordering was followed by at least an hour long wait for our order (5 rolls and 2 nigiri). During this time our server told us twice it's going to be 2 minutes, and then told us there was a "waiting list". To be fair, we did receive a decent edamame appetizer for our trouble. When our rolls came, they looked sloppy and were falling apart, even though the tables next to ours didn't seem to have those problems. In my fatty tuna and green onion roll I found two bones in two separate pieces. At that time I chose to ignore that, just so we didn't have to wait any longer for them to remake the roll. We ordered dessert as well, my husband's tiramisu was pretty good, my ginger ice-cream had a lot of ice-crystals in it, and was drizzled with chocolate syrup to a point where it was more chocolate than ginger, and I didn't want to finish it. The "cherry" on the cake was this: when we paid and left, our server followed us, yelling, my husband went back to see what was wrong (I thought I might've out the wrong amount of money, since we were paying cash). At that point the server confronted about our small tip (1.67) on our 65$ check. Considering the level of service and the quality of food, even that tip was generous. Even though some items on the menu looked appealing, and I might have given it a second chance, given the staff's attitude we will not be coming back or recommending it to any of our friends.

This was my first time and it was def a good experience. The sushi was amazing. Very fresh. My favorite roll is tuna, my usual love, and it was really goood. The kiss of fire roll is very good. Its pretty spicy but everything mixes so well when u eat the whole roll together. I also enjoyed the tempura udon, its different and saltier than most of the other restaurant. Its a different taste, I dont think its dashi based. I wish I lived closer bc id go there alot. And I would say the prices r normal for sushi places. $ 12 average for special roll and $4.50 ish for simple rolls. And for the freshness of the fish and the area, the prices r very good. The restaurant is also nice. Sit by the bar and the chef will give u something special :)

Probably the best sushi I've ever had. The fatty roll is amazing. I would happily become more of a fatty if I could eat this roll every day! Everything was so fresh, and the flavors were wonderful. The specialty rolls were unique, and not your average rolls. A lot to choose from too. Can't wait to go back next time I'm in the area.

Absolutely loved this place. The atmosphere was beautiful! Went on Valentine's Day for dinner with my husband. There was a live band at the top of the stairs that was spectacular. I highly recommend the Chilean Sea Bass. To finish up we had the ginger ice cream which I was initially apprehensive about trying but turned out to actually be very tasty. I would definitely recommend Shiro for a romantic date or even a birthday dinner for a group.

Came here last night with my friend. They close at 10pm and we arrived at 8:45pm. We were seated by a nice Indian gentleman in a side room alone. There was a girl in there and she couldn't make it any more obvious that she was upset two customers just walked in. She was literally being a brat and throwing a tantrum and threw a pencil at the young Asian man who greeted us. We asked the Indian man if we were ok, we were about to walk out. The entire night she kept glaring at us and being very unprofessional. (Even though she wasn't our waitress) I couldn't believe how unwelcome we were. Later that night about 9:30 a couple walks in and asked if they were still open, a man said yes and they were happily seated. 10 min later another woman comes in and that girl was in the front and turned away her business. Then for the rest of the night I could just hear her complain about how people come in late. Very rude, sushi was ok, but I've had better. Maybe the experience would of been more enjoyable if they had a professional staff.

What a gem right in our backyard! I had only been to Shiro once previously to our double date last night. The other time I was there was for a wedding, which, was a really unique and fun place to have an intimate wedding (with some kick-butt food!) When we arrived for our 8PM reservation, I will admit, the host was a bit scattered. He looked and acted overwhelmed, but we were eventually seated. We had to wait at the hostess stand for 5 minutes or so, which really isn't a big deal, but it's kind of a small area with people coming in and exiting the restaurant. I could tell the couple behind us was a little annoyed with having to wait even longer. I think this could be resolved easily with more than one person at the front. Anyways, the server was a bit slow to come to the table, but she was nice and made my non-seafood eating husband feel comfortable with his entree choice of the beef stir fry. Which, by the way - EXCELLENT! Large plate of noodles, with nicely cooked slices of tenderloin in a mild teryiaki sauce - not too salty and not too sweet. I started with the shiro salad which was lightly dressed with a typical ginger dressing, simple and tasty. The boys got the pan fried dumplings, which were devoured in seconds. I got sushi, although it was a toss up for me between various rolls and the special - a Chilean sea bass in a black bean sauce with rice and seared brussels. My girlfriend chose it and she loved it! She ate every bite on her plate. The rolls I got were all very fresh - I chose the crunchy bbq eel, the Alaskan roll and a tuna roll. Delicious, fresh, and large! I could only eat 12 pieces. Noteable wine list, however they did not have blue cheese stuffed olives for my requested dirty martini. Very nice meal, intimate enough for a romantic night out or a good place to catch up with friends.

Odd atmosphere and setting - a poor mixture of American and Japanese decor. Bad lighting and didn't feel welcoming. Food was alright, nothing too spectacular. Overpriced for sushi. Service wasn't great. Ran out of menus even though they weren't busy. Server not knowledgeable about menu - simple question like how many pieces of gyoza does the gyoza appetizer have. Menu was poorly designed - how come speciality rolls and sushi rolls were in three separate places?!

I love Shiro! The ambiance in the restaurant is great and the setting is unlike any other restaurant in the area (in a old mansion). The sushi is also very good of course. The only reason why I give this restaurant a 4 out of 5 is because it is somewhat pricy as everything is sold separately (soup, salad, ect). I know this is common among other sushi restaurants around but being a former student in Ann Arbor Im use to being spoiled when it comes to great deals on sushi.

Came here on a Saturday night, and the place was nearly full. The fact that this restaurant is inside of an old house makes it interesting, although it doesn't exactly match the menu. Service - not good. We were seated for nearly ten minutes before we were able to place our drink order. Our first round/apps took over a half an hour to get to the table. In addition, the shumai we ordered with the first round didn't arrive for over an hour! Once the manager came over to speak with us, the shumai came out within five minutes, and taken off of our bill. In our server's defense, he was taking care of a large party on the other side of the restaurant, but either he needed to get help faster, or give us to someone else. I will say the manage was very friendly (and the reason this is not a one-star review), and tried to rectify the issues with our experience, bringing me to... Food - some of the sashimi tasted like it was frozen, not fresh. The shumai - was it arrived - was very oily when you bit into it. The Salmon on the Beach was cold because it sat for a while before it was served (see above), so the manager gave us another order on the house. We ordered some rolls, hoping that they would salvage the meal...no such luck. None of them tasted very good, and one of the rolls (on a special menu that is not online, so I can't remember which one) contained ginger, which was not indicated on the menu, and was very off-putting. Honestly, there was nothing we ordered that I would order again. At least my martini didn't cost an arm and a leg. If I lived in the area, I would find someplace else to eat sushi.

Shiro is not your typical sushi restaurant. It's a unique dining experience with great atmosphere and amazing sushi. We had a Salmon on the Beach roll, Shake Shake Boom Boom roll, Spicy Shrimp Tempura roll, and some Edamame to start. Everything was fresh, unique and delicious!

I can't recommend going to this place. I had the mussels and my impression after the first one made me suspicious. The mussel was very spongy and had a spoiled flavor as soon as I bit into it. The after taste from it was an even stronger reminder that the mussels had gone bad. Next came the surf and turf, the roasted garlic is overpowering, most of the flavor is garlic and mayo. The beef and shrimp might as well not be in it, because they can't be tasted with the strong mayo and garlic. As I ate it, there was a strange taste to it that bothered me, sour, salty, spoiled. I stopped after one. The meal was looking bad. The omakase came, now normally this is the best the chef has to offer for the day. It looked ok. I had a piece of white tuna nigiri, quality wasn't bad, but it had a very recently pulled from the freezer flavor to it. The kind of flavor you get when something isn't properly refrigerated in the correct temperature. That half refrigerated and half left out flavor. Next I tried the shrimp nigiri, dry, salty, not so good, similar to the bad places I've gone too, but there was still this odd taste that coupled it. Each piece of sushi had the same characteristics. Then I picked up the california roll....................I started chewing it and immediately something was not right. I've had cheap bad sushi from stalls, grocery stores, college campus and overrated places. Places that use jasmine rice, poor ingredients etc.. but NEVER in my life have I ever SPIT a piece of sushi out. This california roll tasted like somebody's dirty sweaty body in my mouth. I actually sat there thinking to myself..have I ever spit a piece of sushi out in my life and I realized no. I've had bad sushi, but not so bad I've had to spit it out, until now. This place will unfortunately always be a bad memory for me. To spit it out, there is something actually wrong with the food. The waiter eventually came by and asked how the food was, I was reluctant to say it was alllllllright...but I told him the california roll was BAD and it had a very weird flavor to it. He offered another roll and I reluctantly agreed to not cause a scene. If the california roll was bad, I'm expecting the same from the replacement tuna roll. The replacement tuna roll came, the tuna inside seemed ok, the seaweed wrapping it was ok, but the rice......had the same sour salty flavor. It became apparent by now, it wasn't just the fish, it was the rice that was bad too. It was a slow night and there were only 2 tables, the service was not so great. My table was handed food with no utensils. It took a while to get my water refilled, the waiter was nice, but not much service going on. Before I ordered I saw the chef behind the bar playing with his smart phone, I was concerned. A sushi chef when behind the bar should NOT handle anything like that and then make sushi. He had his gloves on too, so I know he was going to touch food soon after. Should have listened to my gut. Near the end of my meal the other chef behind the counter comes around and he pushes the mop and bucket for the floor. Now you've all seen the yellow janitor mop bucket on wheels. He was pushing it around, then went back behind the bar and proceeded to touch everything putting it away. I think I know why now my meal tasted so bad. They are touching all sorts of things then making sushi, this explains the consistently salty, sour flavor in the sushi rice. Would not return, nor recommend.

We hosted our wedding reception here and couldn't have asked for more. Mr. Shin and staff were awesome! We got married over a year ago and people are still raving about the food. Every time we have gone in since the food and service are still great .

This was our second time here. I ordered a sushi roll, and the Chilean sea bass. My wife ordered the filet. My fish was delicious and cooked perfectly, but pretty small. The vegetables were great and went well with the buttery sauce. The couscous was good, but a little overcooked. The sushi rice was also a little too wet. My wife's filet was near raw, and her mashed potatoes were cold - not luke warm, but cold. Her vegetables were as good as mine, though. Service was oddly bad, considering I think we were the only ones there at 6pm on a Monday. But when the waitress finally came by and we notified her of my wife's bad plate, she apologized, took the dish back, and brought a complimentary edamame appetizer. The dish eventually came back acceptable. I'd like to give it a four, but with slow service, bad order and expensive meals (our two entrees and one sushi roll was $60 before tip, no drinks), I can't see myself coming back unless a really good coupon presented itself.

Overrated ! So the restaurant is supposed to be a Japanese sushi restaurant .. Service is not so good and the quality of food is average .. For the same price u can get much better sushi in nearby restaurants You don't see a lot of Japanese or Asian ppl eating here .. That's a sign of the quality and authenticity of the sushi Other items on menu are non japanese such as rack of lamb .. Which are prepared horribly Our waitress was very arrogant and completely ignoring her customers .. I had to walk up and summon her to order dessert .. Low knowledge of menu . We asked her a few questions and she was unsure .. So average sushi. Below average American cuisine .. And $$$$ prices ..with low quality service You will ask yourself why you chose this restaurant

Held our 10 year high school reunion here and it was fantastic! The owner was so accommodating, the food was outstanding and everyone had a wonderful time! I would just suggest getting a copy of the drink list before hand, the prices of drinks changed throughout the night. Same glads of wine varied from $7-$8.50 depending on the bar tender. Overall, though people really enjoyed the space, food and service. Hoping yo hold our 20 year reunion there! :)

My first time and will not be my last time!!! Our wives took my buddy and I out for a special birthday dinner celebration last night and though I've driven by this place almost everyday, it was my first time here as Shiro. Excellent sushi. My wife had an excellently prepared steak. Service was fine. Prices were fair. And the atmosphere was quite nice. M83 Mark

Located in a very industrial section of Novi, the restaurant sits further back from the street in a beautiful white house with a dark awning and wide patio. There, several tables were occupied by couples and families enjoying the start of a summer week-end. The sushi bar was located downstairs while our table was up a grand staircase, near the corner of one of the rooms. For a Friday night, the restaurant was not as busy as expected; the tables did not turn over often. To start, I sampled the Trio of Tuna Napoleon and Calamari. The former was fresh, innovative and full of flavor and featured tuna prepared three ways, piled on crisps. I could have made a meal of it. The calamari was a surprise when it arrived. The portion was huge, especially for the price. As well, we were both unprepared to see it covered in a shiny, sweet and spicy garlic/chili sauce - even though it was clearly stated on the menu. It looked like the sauce you would find on General Tso's chicken but less pronounced. As it was just okay - we only made a dent in it before moving on to the side salad with ginger dressing. The salad helped transition between the calamari and the entrée course. I debated between the sushi rolls or steaks before eventually deciding on a delicious miso-marinated Chilean sea bass that was nicely caramelized. It was in a mustard/miso sauce and came with carbs that I avoided (given the big lunch earlier on in the day). It was a flavorful dish and made me very happy. Today, I kicked myself for not asking whether the bass was certified-sustainable. Definitely not paying attention catching up with a friend I had not seen in almost a year. For dessert, I had the crème brûlée. This was a big disappointment in the meal. The crust did not achieve the crackling top that you would usually find, probably due to condensation. I've definitely had better. Service was professional and well-paced. Prices were very reasonable, lower than what you might expect.

This place is the real deal! Top quality nigiri and sashimi- it came out at the perfect temperature so you can taste the delicate flavor but not feel like it's been sitting out too long. They have both traditional rolls and plenty of inventive ones like the Sushi Bomb I had which was a great cool/spicy combo of flavors. Oh, and the rice was also perfect in flavor and density to complement and not detract from the fish. Not only is the sushi amazing but the decor is very classy. It's in an old Victorian style house so each room has its own special quality. Perfect for romantic type dinners but not overly stuffy for a casual lunch too. Prices are above average but more than fair for the food quality and atmosphere. The waiter was friendly and helpful- he took a little time to take our order and the food took maybe 20 minutes, but it was a busy lunchtime crowd so that was fine. I'll definitely be coming back to try more rolls, or anything on the menu!

Shiro is by far my favorite place to go for Sushi in the metro Detroit area. I've been going there for a few years now, and every time I go there, I have a fantastic meal, and the atmosphere is just great. I can say that if the restaurant is packed, you might see a little flux in waiter response time. I've had some very speedy service, and I've also had some very slow service. Make sure to sit close to the sushi bar. ;)

Go for the sushi... My brother treated me to this meal as my Christmas present. The house reminded me of 'The Whitney', and didn't fit this restaurant theme at all. We wanted to sit in the sushi room for obvious reasons, but it's very very small and was full already. We sat across the hall, in a very dark room. Electric candles adorned the walls. The meal was not rushed. I rather enjoyed the pace very much. We started with the Wasabi Shumi with horseradish cream. They offer them in deep fried or steamed variations. As we both enjoy Dim Sum, we opted for the more traditional steamed version. You could tell the Wasabi was incorporated into the making of the wanton skin. This made for a tasty bite with a bit of that wasabi burn on the finish. Six dumplings for $5.00 was nice. Would order again. Second was the Grilled Scallops with jalapeno dressing. They were large scallops sliced down into thinner portions. Grilled nicely, served with a creamy salad and giant parmesan wafer. Two large scallops (cut into four total bites) for $8, lots of salad filler, didn't notice the dressing. Would not order again. We ordered the Sunny-day roll which was on the special list. It contained calamari tempura, cucumber, and was topped with a spicy crab shrimp 'salad'. Don't let the salad word confuse you, it was minced crab/shrimp with spicy sauce holding it together. This roll was great. Very worth the $12.75. Also had the spicy tuna crunch. Which is your typical spicy tuna roll, with a dollop of spicy sauce on top. A generous portion of tempura crumbles which were fried perfectly sat atop. Would order both rolls again. The french onion soup of the day was quiet good. Not as much of that beef bullion depth I adore in french onion. The house salad was cold iceberg with a ginger dressing. Should have left this one in the salad fresh bag it came from GFS in. My brother got the Ribeye for $24 and enjoyed it. The wasabi sauce it comes with was mostly peppercorn in taste. I had the Chef's special for the evening. Crispy jumbo shrimp in a sesame oyster sauce for $21. I was excited for this. When the dish came I took a big bite of that yummy shrimp. First I thought the batter was crisp, then i felt 'sharp' pokes. Yup, it was shell on. One piece stuck in my tooth like a popcorn kernel. Bastard. When the server came to check on us, I asked if this was the house special? She said yes. I stated that I asked how this was prepared, and you said panko breaded. There's no breading, and it's shell on. I also told her shells on should be declared when the customer asks how it's prepared. She asked if I would be ok., and I replied with a yes. They were split open on the back, so I figured de shelling them would be no issue. The sauce was good, so I was willing to extract the shrimp. Welp, that was a real bitch. I was wrong to think I would enjoy de-shelling my shrimp in a sauce based dish. They were sliding all over. My fingers were a mess. Worst of all there were shards of shell throughout the dish, and they had left the legs on. By the time she made it back, I was so over my dish I didn't have the power to ask for management. So I can't fault them on any response, as they very well may have comp'd my entree. A dessert of our choice (picked Creme Brulee) was on the house due to the short fall of my entree however, albeit it lacking much vanilla taste, it was a positive note. As noted, I didn't ask for management, so I can't rate on that portion. I can rate on the fact the server clearly didn't know the special, told me it was panko breaded, and it turned out to be shell on crap soup. Atmosphere only detracted from the meal. One cheap piece of Japanese art does not make a sushi house decor. Over priced on entrees for the portion. I'm sure if I went here only for sushi I would rate it 5 stars. Lucky for this review I got a cross section of Shiro Restaurant. Go for the sushi...

This is my favorite spot in Michigan to go for sushi. Hands down the best and most creative I have had around here. Always tastes fresh, never fishy. Their sushi chefs know their shit and take their job seriously. They also have some decent non-sushi items on their menu, I really enjoy their spicy black bean noodles in particular. However sushi is where Shiro truly shines. It gets a little crazy on Friday and Saturday evenings so I suggest you go while they are slower, during the week, to help guarantee you'll be served by one of the veteran staff there (who are all awesome). The weekend "fill-ins" can be totally hit or miss. GREAT spot for a mid-week date-night. Wonderful setting, great ambiance, and oh yeah the food is yummy too.

When I first got there, before I walked in, I felt like I was under-dressed because it does look like a very classy restaurant. I was wearing work pants and a nice top but I felt like I should have been wearing a "night-out" outfit. If there weren't any other people there wearing jeans and a t-shirt, I would have continued to feel that way after walking in but it turns out there are no dress codes. It is recommended that you make a reservation but we didn't and we were still able to sit at the sushi bar, which was still fine. The service was very good. The waiter was very nice and helpful. I got the sushi. To be honest, it was good sushi but I couldn't really tell the difference between that and the sushi that I have special made at the Chinese buffet. HOWEVER, at the buffet you have to pay the $14 buffet price; at Shiro it was only $4.50 per 6pc roll, which was great! And the most expensive meal was only about $12! Dessert was also delicious. All in all, I was very happy with my experience there and would go back.

Who says that Novi is lacking in history and folklore? This restaurant in a Victorian mansion (which was probably built in the 1970s and not the 1870s) is said to be haunted. But the only thing I found slightly scary was the prices. Cynicism about the story of the surroundings aside, Shiro is a very good slightly upscale spot. Sitting in the upstairs dining room, I found the ambiance spectacular. While the seating area was crowded, the starched shirt-clad waitstaff was very patient in explaining Japanese food to my mother, who, bless her heart, is very meat and potatoes and spice averse. All around my family, celebrating my brother's 30th birthday, though, couples dined in a just fancy enough to be romantic atmosphere with white table clothes and candles. About all it was lacking was a view of, um, Nine Mile Road. Never mind. It wasn't missing that. Unfortunately, my food didn't seem to match the decor. I got a very bland, but slightly too bean tasting, black bean udon noodles. These consisted mainly of large chunks of undercooked - and crumbly - soy chunks and too few noodles to gain much chopstick traction (and my skills are not that impressive to begin with had I been here with a date). My AAC (avocado, asparagus, and cucumber) sushi was delicious, however. The spicy, crunchy sauce they put on top of the veggie sushi was mysterious as to its contents, but it blended with the mixed veggies, heavy on the avocado, brilliantly. I would definitely come back here to grab some lunchtime sushi, but the price point (and having to make reservations which might or might not be honored - someone else had theirs crossed off when we arrived) just doesn't make dinner worth it. As beautiful, and legendary (for suburbia at least) as this restaurant is.

When Shiro is on their game, they can be five stars. But for the inconsistency, the wavering service, and the price, I'm afraid I have to settle with an average of three. The bar area can be a fun and romantic area to dine when Marcia is working. But other bartenders we've had (ah-hem, girl who slowly clomps around in giant high heels) have left us with empty drinks and overall lacking service. Food highlights include: surf and turf roll (wonderfully seared beef on a delicious sushi roll!); spicy shrimp tempura roll (shrimp, cucumber, crap, avocado, spicy sauce); spicy tuna pizza (sounds weird, but trust me); and red tornado roll (tuna, topped with a sweet sauce, and torched.) The Chilean sea bass and beef teriyaki have also been pretty tasty. If your food comes to you in time, it will be good. If there's a delay, not so much. I hope Shiro can achieve some order and consistency, because they certainly have potential.

I literally had the worse dining experience in my life here and at the worse time since I was entertaining an out of town guest who was from the foody town of Portland OR. I don't even know where to begin, but 1st: DON'T try to go here on the weekend! They are so packed thus the service is SO BAD, you will be miserable! The experience is so bad I just have to leave you with this one story: they served me the wrong sushi roll, I told them about it and they literally said I was wrong, it's what I ordered and refused to change it. My guest and I couldn't believe it - we were so speechless that we just paid the bill and left; never to return again and I live 1 mile from this place!

Went here for a business lunch and waited by the door for about 5-10 mins with another table (7 people total) while the hostess worked on a takeout order. Made no sense, finally a waitress saw us and told us to seat ourselves. Both tables went and sat. We then waited another 5-10 minutes and no server came over to us. We got up and got our own menus. Ordered a bunch of sushi which came out at a reasonable speed but was just OK. Waitress was very good when she finally came over but that hostess was awful. No clue. Food just OK. I'll try somewhere else next time.

Went here with a party of 25 and sat at 5 different tables, yet the waiter decided, that everyone's order should be on one bill. Which took our group an extra 30 minutes to split up and then it took the servers another 30 minutes to check our math and ring up our bills. The food wasn't the best I've had, but it wasn't the worst. During our check out the old lady bartender behind the bar felt that she needed to open her mouth to the ridiculous situation that was happening and started to actually laugh at us! We did give her a piece of our mind and I hope this review makes this place change their ways!!

I'm completely shocked at all the good reviews! With the quality and choice of other sushi/Asian restaurants in the Novi area I'm baffled that this place was so busy. Ate there a few weeks ago and will never, ever go back. Sushi was nothing to write home about. Friend ordered the avocado & tuna salad, you would think it would be some nice hunks of tuna, mixed with avocado & some lime type dressing? Nope, came out as a HUGE bowl (think Olive Garden salad bowl for the table) with a HUGE gravy boat of dressing, a TON of lettuce and three tiny pieces of brown avocado & some cubes of tuna. My friend sent the brown avocado back and they replaced it with fresher avocado. As others have noticed, service was horrendous. A meal that should have been about an hour took well over 2 1/2 hours.

I was debating between two stars, but the description of the one-star experience seemed far more accurate, so I'm staying with that. My friends love this place, but our last experience there warranted a "bummed-out" review. Quick pros and con's first, though: Pros: Tasty sushi, beautiful facilities, upscale dining experience (sometimes) Cons: Expensive for what you get, bad dining experience (this time) I'm not going to go into the full story, but I'll hit the high-hard ones of our last dining experience at Shiro. Group of four with reservation. They were busy, so the wait to get water orders was to be expected. Waiter would often rush past us, ignoring our calls/questions (this happened probably 5-6 times at least). Completely forgot two separate rolls & a bowl of rice on our order, those showed up 5-10 minutes after the table's main order arrived, several hot/warm sushi orders (fired) sat on the sushi bar long enough to be served to us cold... and when we commented on it, he literally just had the sushi chef fire them again, which only *kind of* fixed the problem. They DID provide an order of sushi for us au gratis, but by that time everyone was full and nobody had any. Oh, and as a bonus... all of the sushi rice was a bit overdone. Didn't bother me, but someone in our party knew enough to mention it to one of their employees. Later, as the place started to empty out the waiter was still hard to get a hold of (would disappear for 5-10 minutes at a time) and rushed us through the billing process of the evening, which seemed a bit more complicated than it needed to be when it came to splitting the check over 3 cards). I don't know if the waiter wasn't happy with the tip we gave him or not, but afterwards I saw him several times talking under his breath to other employees and pointing toward our table and later glaring at me (direct eye contact) while we were finishing up. Sorry... I know a lot of people love this restaurant and maybe if you know someone there it's a better experience, but this last visit was BAD. Now, I WOULD like to point out that I've been there and had a wonderful dining experience. Shiro IS an expensive restaurant to dine at and MOST of the time you will be getting what you paid for, in terms of food quality and customer service... but this last visit was enough for me to (a) write this review and (b) be totally content with NEVER eating at Shiro again.

If you own this place and really want it to succeed....I think that taking a customer service class or taking a "how to be a service industry manager 101" course is in order. What the heck happened?!?!?! I used to frequent this place at least once every 2-3 weeks (yes, my husband and I eat out that much)- plus when you can use the restaurant.com coupon every couple of visits... this place always seemed like a good deal. Unfortunately, this was my first lunch experience and just may be my last visit to Shiros. This is a shocker because this used to be one of my favorites..... but thanks to the wonderful people on Yelp, I will not be steered incorrectly to a new local fav. We had a visitor in from WAY out of town and wanted to show off our local flair and thought this would be perfect. Originally, we planned on going on Monday but we had other dates arranged, but I called to see if the restaurant.com coupon worked at lunch. There used to be something in the detail about the coupon being good for dinner only- but that was no longer there... The individual (male) that I spoke on the phone with assured me that the coupon was valid. The lunch event started out nicely- they opened up at 11:30- there was a large (probably private party) ahead of us but didn't take too long to be seated. Drinks orders taken and food orders were taken after a decent description of the menu we ordered. We waited about 20 minutes to get our food but had soup and salad to get started- the meal was at a very nice even pace. As I mentioned above, this was my first lunch there but immediately I could tell the difference between the dinner quality and lunch quality. The rice was a little hard on the rolls and my shiro maguro (albacore or white tuna) was super fishy- it wasn't the normally buttery tender slice that I remembered. It wasn't bad but definitely not the quality I knew from this place. We were all joking that it was because we got the chef special and the chef special must be include anything that could eliminate obsolescence! Overall, the waitress was good. Food was ok. I would give a 3 star of the normal 5 star.... However, this visit went quickly south.... We gave the coupon to the waitress- she squished up her nose and said "sorry, we don't take those for lunch." I pulled it back and responded with "oh, I just called on Monday because I noticed the detail change in the body of the coupon and it didn't say anything on it." She said they didn't take it. I asked why it wouldn't say it in the body of the text under description (where it excludes a couple of other things). Our out-of-town guest suggested us talking to a manager to explain the situation. And the waitress said no- they don't take them. It seemed as though she was scared of her own manager based on her reaction- then we learned why. I am all for playing by the rules, but it really irks me when you call to see what they are and they don't tell you the truth. Very reluctantly, our waitress got the manager and instantly this lady was VERY rude.... Before we could even say a word, she came right over to the table, let out a big sigh, and said "yeah, we don't take them." I calmly said "yes, I understand that but I wanted to let you know that I called someone from your staff said that you did take them. Furthermore, there isn't anything in the detail that says that you do not accept it at lunch but there used to be." She told me that she was the one who spoke with me (hmmm.. she sounded WAY more manly on the phone then) and she told me that she didnt take them on the phone. Did she just call me a liar? She raised her voice over me- accused me of taking "dinner only" words out of the detail with "the computer." Did a manager just accuse me of fraud? After she walked away, I was very offended and pulled up the website/certificate on my phone to show her that is what the actual certificate showed. She wanted nothing to do with it and gave more attitude. Our out of town guest, said (again calmly) "it is surprising that with urbanspoon and yelp you would not be more concerned about your customers..." And the manager of Shiro's responded "whatever." She was by far the rudest and mean service person, let alone manager I have ever come in contact with. Absolutely no professionalism. Well, Shiro, "whatever" back to you. I will not be back after being accused of fraud and treated terribly for trying to bring to your attention that there is a disconnect between what one of your advertisements was saying, what your employees were saying and now what you are saying. If you tried to listen for a few minutes, you would have understood the intent of bringing this confusion to your attention and not trying to be a difficult customer.

Not as good as before. We ordered the calamari , it was not what we expected . It has something like Chinese Kung pao sauce poured on it. Taste ok only. Personally still prefer the traditional one which has dipping sauce on the side. Then our main courses , scallop and NY strip both have the very salty brown sauce. I guess they tried to make it looks like a fusion dish, but did a bad job on it. The Jumbo scallop, which says on the menu, was not any kind of Jumbo at all. And it was not very fresh. I can taste a bit of fishy smell. Service wise is only a OK. Not very friendly, kind of slow. Our drinks were empty for a long time and no refill. Our waitress disappeared after she served us the main course. We had a hard time to find her to get us the check. For the money you are paying, it is just not worth to go there for that kind of service, and food, period.

This is the most white-washed sushi place i've ever been to. The food is actually good. I love how the location feels slightly haunted, reminded me of THE SHINING. i wish the had REDRUM sushi though. but no. all the sushis were conservatively made. it was good. i liked it, but i just didn't love it.

This is one of the most underrated restaurants in Novi. It is known as a great Sushi place but it is much more than that. I am not a Sushi fan but there are many menu items outside of the Sushi format. I started with crab rolls which were excellent and then had shrimp tempura-----really great. My wife had the salmon Teriacki and it was near perfect. There are so many great sounding non-Sushi items on the menu that we will need to go back soon. The service was excellent and the prices reasonable.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant in Michigan! And there are a lot of sushi joints around here! The food is to die for (not literally)! And the atmosphere is quite unique as it is in a large farm house that was converted into a restaurant. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you have Japanese guests that would like a nice taste of home. We have taken several colleagues here and they are very pleased with the authenticity of the menu. I have enjoyed everything I have gotten here, and I'm not one to get the same thing every time. I think I've probably had 70-80% of dishes on the lunch menus and the lunch boxes are perfect!

Stopped by for lunch and everything was great and very reasonably priced. Got sushi/sashimi bento box and it was a steal for $11 - included a seaweed slaw, shrimp/vegetable tempura, 6 pieces California roll, 3 pieces of tuna on rice sashimi and 2 slices each of raw salmon and tuna. Fantastic - highly recommended and would be great for dinner with a group as well.

Gotta say SHOCKED that this place has such high reviews. Yeah, I get that the house turned into restaurant is kind of cool. Yes, it was nice to get a room to ourselves with our own balcony, but this review is based only on the food, which was straight up nasty. One of the rolls I tried was the rainbow roll, which was served to me with browning avocados! That was gross but for some reason, I still decided to try it. They tasted funky. Sushi that isn't fresh is unacceptable. Yuck. Lastly the sushi menu was pretty ridiculous, a lot of deep fried crap and some chicken rolls? WTF. When I go to a sushi place I like to see a lot of fresh FISH options. Will never be eating here again.

I love this restaurant. The tuna tartar is always amazing. I get the shrimp shumai, seaweed (or house) salad, miso soup, and a bunch of sushi. The red tornado roll is really awesome. They have a pretty decent wine list and a very cool atmosphere. Service has always been okay, not amazing. I love this place for the sushi and the atmosphere. Yum!

We stopped in here after our trivia finals for a quick late night snack. They were closing in 40 minutes but invited us in intent on serving us. Our server was Dani who I was really impressed by. She was attentive and totally on her game. The sushi was once again GREAT! The Red Dragon roll, the Kiss of Fire roll and the nigiri were all fantastic as were the apps we ordered (ebi shumai and the spring rolls-both very good). We ordered the Diamond Momokawa sake which was brought out straight away. We ate our meal and out the door we went stomachs full and mouths happy!

Nope. A 19th century house, turned restaurant, in an industrial park? Weird setting, especially for an asian restaurant. Sushi menu was pretty bad...only two items out of maybe 10-12 were raw. For good reason as one piece of nigiri that I got had a rotten spot. The "flame broiled" rolls tasted like butane. We ordered appetizers for the table and they never came. I was honestly so ready to get out of there that I might've even paid for them.

We went to Shiro again, this time including the BF's dad for a Grad School Acceptance Celebration. (BF is going for a ph.d in clinical psych) The food was delicious but this time I tried the sushi. I got the sushi dinner, with a spicy tuna roll. It was good, but not 5 star good so I felt I needed to update my review. The service was still great as was the atmosphere and pacing. So I probably won't get the sushi again, but I'll definitely be back for the dinners, drinks, appetizers, and desserts.

Hands down my favorite restaurant! I've been going here since they opened and have never had a bad meal. In my opinion the prices at Shiro could be raised (the sushi and rolls are priced the same as a strip-mall sushi take-out restaurant except Shiro is located in a mansion built in 1928). I usually order from the sushi bar but have tried many items from the kitchen. One of the best things about Shiro is even if someone in your group doesn't like sushi they offer a variety of steaks, seafood and poultry dishes. I've brought many a friend into the restaurant and they all agree the food is amazing. Mr. Shin, Mikey and the entire staff are great! I highly recommend!

We wanted to try some place new, and I had a restaurant.com certificate. I have not been this pleasantly surprised with a sushi restaurant since Ken and I tried O'sushi for the first time! We ordered way too much (that damn certificate), but I'm not complaining... too much. Started with the vegetable tempura dinner (a mounding plate of crispy outside/soft inside veggies plus sweet dipping sauce, a bowl of miso soup and a side of rice for $12). Definitely enough to share. Great miso. OK rice. We missed the onion rings that normally come with veggie tempura. Wished the sauce had more flavor depth. Next up was the sushi. We ordered three rolls off the new roll menu. First one had coconut shrimp, mango jalapeno pico-type relish and pesto sauce on top (my favorite of the three!). Second one - maybe called Explosion? - was a tempura battered raw fish combination with spicy and red sauces on top (the bottom of the three for both of us). Third had heaping piles of crab salad, slivered almonds and a balsamic glaze on top (Ken's fav). Now, none of these are authentic in any way, but boy were they fun! Very fresh and different. Rolls were the size of a normal California, 8 pieces each. $12-ish each. We also tried individual pieces. I did yellow tail, king crab and scallop (I put them in order of favorite). Ken did octopus, eel and beef tenderloin - which was cooked and in a sweet sauce (he'd skip the beef next time). Large hot sake for $7 - steal! Smooth and warm. Ken's Japanese beer, a large bottle, was $8. Interesting setting - creaky mansion. We ate upstairs. Parked behind the house, in a very dark lot (creepy). Excellent service for us - friendly knowledgeable and relatively quick. We'll go back for sure... after buying more gift certificates!!

I really enjoyed my meal here. Both the atmosphere and the food were great. We came on a Sunday night, so it wasn't too busy. We started off with a drink at the bar, and then got a nice table by the sushi bar when the rest of our party came. The room where we ate was a little hot, despite the large air conditioner in the corner, but I suppose those old houses aren't always the best for climate control. For my dinner, I had the teriyaki salmon. The honey ginger glaze was great, not too sweet, and the fish was cooked well. I didn't care for the "slaw" that was all over the plate, so I just pushed it to the side. My boyfriend had the steak -- ehhhh, steak at a sushi restaurant is not such a great choice! He said he veggies were good, but heavy on the mint. I'd like to go back and try some sushi next time. Overall, good food and service, and I loved the uniqueness of the location.

The restaurant is located in an old 1920s mansion. The building is a bit run down but very atmospheric. Food is very good, some appetizers were simply fantastic. Sushi is good, wouldn't call it outstanding thought. Overall a very nice experience.

I attended this eatery after many years of living in the area. Friends of ours wanted to treat me to sushi for my Birthday. I must say, Shiro is THE place to go in town for sushi. Their rolls and other selections are excellent and the ambiance of the old home was delightfully different. Our waiter was friendly, informative, and very gracious. He allowed us to take our time and really enjoy ourselves. Overall, I am a fan. I think we'll be back anytime we are looking for great sushi.

My wife, kids and friends have gone here several times in the past and always enjoyed it -- until last Friday. We called ahead to ask how long the wait was, as we had a large group (5 adults, 2 kids), and were told there was not a wait so we decided to go ahead. When we got there, as expected, there was minimal wait (maybe 5 minutes), and everything was great we got seated and they brought us our water and said the server would be there momentarily. 20 minutes later I started the stopwatch timer on my phone to see how long we would have to wait until a server came over to take our orders. 5 minutes after that (so 25 minutes total now) one of our party went to the hostess and mentioned that no server had come buy to take our orders. The hostess apologized and indicated that it would be fixed. No problems right? After another 5 minutes of not having heard anything or seen anyone, we gave up and left. As we were leaving I stopped by the hostess stand and asked to speak with the manager. When we told the manager that we had been sitting there for over half an hour not having had anyone even come buy at all and that we were giving up and going somewhere else his only response was "sorry" and "it's [name]'s table". Suffice to say, that this was a failure on all levels -- the server who never showed up, the hostess who didn't rectify it when notified, and the manager who seemed completely indifferent to the fact that a party of seven came in, sat around for 30 minutes after being seated and then left because they didn't receive any service. Every other time I've come the food has been great. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing if it would have been good this time as well.

DOWNHILL::.. As Friday night take out regulars we enjoy the sushi however the spiral continues as in the words of a fill in manager "the owner doesn't care anymore" "the head chef left" and "the dishwasher quit." I would've recommended them in the past and we tried to support them while they were down. Unfortunately I have to draw the line after 1hr wait time (every week) on take out and then arriving to "what did you order? I'll put it in for you now." Let me know when the business is in order or demo day to turn the place into a parking lot

Terrible. What's the point of making a reservation if arriving at a restaurant at the reserved time means waiting for almost a half hour for a table? The front house staff seemed frazzled on the particular Saturday night we went, the hostess who took us to our table was kind of awkward and unsure of her role, and our waiter, although a nice guy, messed up our order. We were seated at an impromptu table- the seats were still cold because the table was probably brought in from storage and was set up not in any of the main dining halls, but in the hallway. Totally strange. The place looks nice at first, but is definitely in need of repair and a good scrub down. The cracks in the walls and overflowing trash bins are far from novel. The food. Totally Americanized sushi in a bad way. Only a handful of rolls were not fried, oh- excuse me, tempura'd, and the rolls that weren't still had included something ridiculous like mango sauce, jalapenos, or spicy mayo and cream cheese. Starving, we ordered, sat for a long time waiting, ate what was brought to us (someone else's order) and then tried to eat some of what we actually ordered once it was corrected. That night and the next day were terrible. A worse stomach-ache is not in my recent memory. This place is overrated and for people who like their 'sushi' fried and slathered in sauces and creams and other unnecessary condiments. Steer clear.

really it's a 3.49star that i'd want to give shiro - hence the rounding down. this is not the place for authenticity. that being said, who cares about authenticity? certainly not me, as delicious food is much more important. the restaurant itself is a mansion in the random middle of suburbia and has a nice ambiance. seems on the fancy side, though i wouldn't feel out of place in jeans. now on to the food. the place seemed big on "specialty" rolls, which in my sushi experience has meant american style rolls loaded with "stuff" and given epic or nonsensical names. which can be delicious but can also all end up tasting the same from place to place as the simplicity of a good sushi roll gets lost. i admire their creativity. one crowd-pleaser was the samba roll, which had pesto on it and it surprisingly worked. a really good roll we had had spicy mango and jalapeños on it, which was decent as expected.another roll we got had calamari in it, which just made me wish we had ordered calamari instead. the size of the rolls are average so don't expect to get full on them unless you order a lot of them or an entrée in addition. the price is only slightly higher than average at about $11-$14 per specialty roll. also had a delicious appetizer of lobster and crab meat spring rolls on a bed of mashed potatoes. i really wished the potatoes weren't present - they were gritty and terrible, which is a shame considering the spring rolls were pretty tasty. service was great. our server was attentive and friendly. i'd recommend trying the place, but really don't think i'd go back. there is as good simple sushi for a better price much closer.

Love Shiro!! My boyfriend and I have been there several times, and we have very few restaurants that we frequent because there are so many choices out there. We order appetizers and sushi when we go so I can't speak for the entire menu but we loooove the sushi. They also have steak if you are not a fan of sushi. The sushi chefs are amazing and the staff is very polite. Plus the whole ambience is really cool with the history of the old house that it is in. Can't say enough good things about Shiro, you'll have to check it out for yourself

Yuck! Are you friggin kidding me? I took the hubs for his birthday last year and went to bed hungry! The sushi rolls we ordered were tasty; however the steaks we ordered tasted like a match between liver and a fear factor meal. By far the WORST restaurant ever! Parking sucked and so did the waitstaff. After taking off the horrible steaks from our tab we deuced! however, one star is earned- we lived. The end.

Best sushi in town! I love love love the Tiger Roll. Im also a huge fan of how seaweed is in the miso soup, no other sushi place i have been to has done this. The setting is so romantic too! Its my husband and me's official spot, i even got proposed to after a night at Shiros! :) The service can be a little slow sometimes but the staff is very friendly and knowledgable about the food.

Great place, great food for a very affordable price. I'm a regular there for lunch, and the only problem I had few times was the service timing, but they have improved. I highly recomend for lunch / business lunch.

Back once again, and again Shiro was not to be missed. Friday just after 7pm, seated at the sushi bar right away. I'd come here just for the fantastic Gyoza, but unfortunately, the sushi is damn good too. Tako sunomono, spicy tuna roll, seared albacore jalapeno roll, unagi, and ikura w/quail egg. Perfect sized meal for me and it was all as good as I've come to expect from Shiro. I held off on some of the others things I usually order (Gold and Black sake, tuna tar tar, sushi dinner, etc). I've been to Morimoto, Nobu, and a handful of other 'high end' sushi/japanese places in the states. I'll take Shiro everytime, hands down. Great food at a good (albeit maybe a little pricey) price.

My wife and I rather enjoyed Shiro tonight. We went, after reading the many (and varied) reviews. All in all we set our expectations at a light service and possibly tasty fun place to go. What we got was rather close to that. It did take us a few minutes to sit, even for a Monday with reservations which we were on time for. The wait staff were a bit slow, although I would attribute that more to the layout and "round robin" method of server to customer. But do not let that stop you from enjoying the fantastic sushi! We ordered and rate the following rolls and sushi 1. Surf and Turf roll: Mild, but very flavorful. Add wasabi if you need a bit of zing and want the meat to come out in every bite. 2. Kiss of Fire: not for the faint of spice. This roll comes on rather strong in the heat and doesn't let go. Also, quite tasty! 3. Crunchy Roll: I have had crunchy rolls at several sushi establishments around the country and several in Michigan. Allow me to say that it "wasn't what I expected" but still quite tasty. 4. Unagi Roll: If you are a fan of eel and like the true sweet, almost bbq taste, this is not your roll. Contrary to what most people like in eel, this roll had more of a teriyaki taste. Again, not bad, but different. 5. White Tuna (Sushi) - OMG, it was perfect. The salmon was "break apart in your mouth", please give me more, wholy crap did you just fish for this out back Good... 6. Eel (sushi) - a hefty portion of eel and had all of the bbq sweetness that I expect. Very tasty. and a surprise from one of the chefs 7. Salmon on the beach (roll) - it was quite tasty, almost silky smooth. But didn't have the same creamy consistency that I would have expected (**like the white Christmas roll from O'Sushi in Canton for those in the know). My wife had Crème brûlée, which was a huge portion of Crème brûlée. I had some ginger ice cream. All in all a wonderful experience and a place we will definitely visit again when we want a fun and tasty time. p.s. In the winter, if you are someone who gets chilled easily, do not sit near one of the windows. It is a "old drafty mansion" and is quite cold near them.

Delightful sushi. Good classic sushi and inventive, creative sushi. Tonight we had a Crazy Monkey roll from the Specials menu. Banana with crab roll and tobiko. It was great!!! Beautiful and delicious. Wish I had thought to take a photo. The Hawaiian roll with mango on top of a California roll was refreshing. Everything we ordered was very satisfying. For dessert, we ordered the Vanilla Butternut martini. It was magical with vanilla, hazelnut and butterscotch flavors, like a liquid candy bar. Worth a stop for this drink alone. Important: There's a small bar in the back on the right side from the entrance. It shares a doorway with the dining room where you can watch the chefs prepare sushi. It smells strongly of smoke when seated in that room because of the bar. We asked to sit in the opposite side of the mansion on the left. Problem solved. No smoke smell.

My boyfriend and I visited here after an online coupon was discovered. I am totally hooked! The ambiance is very cool - rustic haunted looking house. The waitstaff is friendly but not creepy and the food is great but not over the top. The food comes out not to fast and not too slow so it doesn't feel like you're being rushed but it doesn't take forever either. When the food does come out, it almost always looks extravagant. The sushi is interesting and tastes good as well. I haven't had one thing there that I didn't enjoy on some level. The pricing seems fitting for the service and the food. We will definitely be back and I can safely and confidently recommend this restaurant to all of my sushi-loving friends.

Upon my arrival at Shiro I was pretty excited to be filling my five day craving for sushi. The mansion style place is a cool idea but not sure if it's right for a restaurant. I mean how many times a week does someone take a spill down that crazy stairway? I brought my date here on the weekend. We were early and the place was pretty much empty. We were promptly seated and given menus. We ordered drinks and some spring rolls. The spring rolls were no better than store bought freezer food. They were also small and we only got three. For the price they were a big disappointment. As we looked at the menu and asked the waiter to give us some time, like three times in a span of five minutes. No lie! The waiter came to our table like three times in about five minutes. Before we even ordered the appetizer he came to our table for the second time and said something to the affect of us ordering food or not. Like he thought we were not used to sushi or something. I admit we were dressed pretty casual but so were most of the people that came in later. It kind of pissed me off. So after our apps and drinks we got into a few rolls. We ordered a few and some sashimi. The sashimi was good like butter. The other rolls were pretty good but we did order two specialty rolls, not sure if the special rolls menu changes, but both of them sucked. They were also the most expensive. So they were $30 for two sushi rolls that were not very good. I don't mind dishing out for a $15 sushi roll but that shit better be good. This shit was not. When we were finally ready to go it took about ten minutes just for our waiter to grab the check and my money. Leaving Shiro I felt like ok but I have had much better. This one's checked off the list so hopefully it will only go up from here.

We ate at Shiro last night and everything was fantastic. The place is gorgeous. We were there on a Sunday night, and they were busy. So we were seated upstairs and had the whole floor to ourselves! The room is very airy and fresh. I loved the original wood floors (the restaurant is an old mansion). Our server never forgot about us and was very friendly. We all had martinis- which were all perfect. Our appetizers of seaweed salad and tempura vegetables were great. Large slices of veggies (onion, broccoli, yam, asparagus, squash) and not too heavy on the tempura batter. I got the Samba roll, and it was so good! It was topped with coconut shrimp and pesto cream sauce. Everyone at our table loved it. My sister chose two of the vegetarian rolls and really liked the ACCE but didn't care for the Fresh Fashion. It was too spicy and kind of plain. My husband got the teriyaki salmon- oh man it was wonderful! Shiro makes their own teriyaki sauce, and I wish I could get their recipe. This is a great place for a date. It is just so pretty and has great food. We brought our 6 month old baby and the waitstaff was very accommodating. They brought a highchair and seated us in a more secluded area. However, the bathrooms are tiny and there was no changing table.

If I could give Shiro more than 5 stars I would. We used to go here twice a week when we were closer to Novi, but still try to make it to Shiro any time we're on that side of town. The ambience at Shiro is awesome- being in that really cool old house. Service is amazing; the waitstaff has always been great to us, bringing out samples of new rolls or soups for us to try at times. Their food (we always get sushi) is by far the best sushi I have ever had. And a huge plus about Shiro, is in my opinion, their prices are incredibly low. Compare them to anything near the Royal Oak area, or really even anywhere else that I have looked in SE Michigan, and I don't know how they keep their prices so low still. This is hands-down my favorite restaurant (sushi or not) to eat at!

Props to Shiro for picking a mansion as its location. I think the food is on the expensive side. Don't come here if you are expecting authentic Japanese cuisine. It is more for novelty, than it is for great sushi. Since I love imaginative sushi rolls, I enjoyed Shiro's addition of balsamic vinegar, mango salsa, and pesto to some of its creations. Overall, the food was decent. I would only come back if I had a restaurant.com coupon and people who wanted to eat Japanese food in an old colonial mansion.

My wife, a friend, and myself ate their this week for the first time. I have only been to one Japenese restaurant before and this was a great experience. The ambiance is very cool and we had great food, excellent service and a wonderful time. We will definately go back in the future. Being a newbie to Japanese food, I don't know that I am any expert to help compare their food, but we all enjoyed it very much.

Nice fancy place with some good tastes, the effort they put into the dishes shows. Definitely serves as a date place. The crab cakes are nice, filling, and it's cooked in a way to allow he natural flavors to come out. The seared tuna with black sesame was very good as well.

Because we live so close, we frequent this sushi/eclectic mix restaurant. The true sushi is wonderful and the fish/shellfish used is top quality. I love to sit at the sushi bar to watch the prep. My favorites are the uni - the sea urchin is so pure and melts in your mouth; the unagi, and the ikura and tobiko. I get these every time and they are always amazing. As far as sides and entrees - the black sesame ahi tuna is always top quality. Once you've tasted Shiro's version you will never order it anywhere else! The kimchi crab cake is great, but it needs a different sauce - the tomato sauce is NOT light - it overpowers the delicate cake...a beurre blanc would be perfect! The seaweed salad is a great starter. The Shiro salad could be so much better - the aisian-inspired dressing is nice, but the lettuce is boring - baby and micro greens and some julienne pea pods, sweet pepper, toasted almonds would make it great. My kids love the miso soup and tempura shrimp. They also enjoy the deep fried rolls (leave it to Americans to take something so healthy and deep fry it and smother it in a mayo-based sauce! The service can be slow and waiters many times have tables up and downstairs. Waiters are great at recommending wines and the martinis are excellent. The building itself needs a lot of work and do the restrooms - I hope the owners put some money into grounds repair and upkeep.

This is the fanciest and nicest sushi joint I've ever been to. It's also the only sushi restaurant I've ever been to that is in a mansion. There's nothing asian or japanese about it, it's a straight up big 'ol mansion. They have tons of sushi, special rolls, and standard japanese food fare. I had extremely fresh, tasty, and beautifully prepared sushi and rolls. They also gave me a few complimentary pieces of one of the night's special rolls. That was a nice surprise. The service is also quite good. And for being so "fancy", it's not expensive at all. Good food at reasonable prices in a mansion... not bad at all!

Ebi shumai were perfect! Great texture, perfectly flavorsome. Next, ordered stir fried egg noodles with shrimp in black bean sauce. Comes with choice of salad or soup. I got Shiro salad, mixed greens with thin tomato slice with ginger dressing. Dressing was best I've had with ginger, soy and hints of sesame oil. The noodle dish, piping hot was vermicelli type noodles, thin carrot strands, cabbage thinly chopped, short green beans and slender shards of green pepper. All veggies perfectly crisp tender. Shrimp, tail on also perfectly cooked.

Pretty decent sushi, very expensive, but absolutely TERRIBLE treatment on the part of the our server. That's not to say all of the servers treat customers like ours did, but my sister and I are unlikely to go back b/c of it. Until the end of the meal, we had enjoyed everything: food, service, etc. Then we paid the bill and asked for some change after including over a 15% tip in the total b/c neither one of us had smaller bills and did not want to use a charge card (probably will not be doing that again soon). The server took 20 minutes before coming back and the restaurant was closing, then very rudely snapped at us that we had not paid her enough in tip, that she could not give us back our correct change, that most customers who go to that restaurant pay 15-18% in tip (which we had, off of the total bill after tax). Further, she proceeded to underestimate the tip we gave her by a dollar or two, then over estimated the cost of the bill by the same amount, while continuing to point to the actual amount. We were stunned and pulled out our calculators to recalculate the tip to see if in fact we had made a mistake and as we did this, she finally said, "fine, it's your money, i'll leave you your change, you could leave me 2 more dollars or 4 more dollars. whatever you want." We didn't really understand her math or what deficiency in tip she was referring to. After recalculating the tip to realize again that we did leave her enough, especially after this kind of treatment, we left abruptly after feeling terribly uncomfortable and furious. Soon after, we spoke with several people about our terrible experience and left a message to speak with the manager, and will be following up to make sure that this isn't a regular practice at this kind of restaurant. We will most likely not be coming back to this place after that kind of treatment. I've never experienced a server come back for a greater tip and am usually a generous tipper. This experience makes me think twice about being generous if this is the kind of response i should expect.

OMG!! This place is located in a beautiful Victorian style house with great Japanese decor. Clearly not your typical location, for most restaurants mind you. To be honest, I am generally skeptical of any Japanese restaurant after living in Tokyo for 2 years. I was in for a treat. First, they have a small but decent selection of sake wines. The table ordered the sushi and sashimi plates. It came with a miso soup. So far, this is the most authentic miso soup I have had in a long time. The sushi was very fresh and tasty. The service is about right for a restaurant that serves well prepared dishes. My only regret was ordering the specialty coffees. These were way to strong and sweet. Otherwise, I would strongly recommend dining at this wonderful establishment!

Sushi and Much More is what I would say. They have a very good classic sushi bar with great taste and presentation and the prices were not bad - not great but not bad for dinner sushi. But if you have people in your group that don't like raw fish there is a TON of items on menu for them. Service was good and the SAKE was nice - great to see a few different types and by the bottle, again, little more than it should have cost but nice to see cold light sake. Would go back

Disappointing take out. Really hate paying $12 for a "premium" sushi roll (spider) and receiving almost zero soft shell crab. Yes there was some crunchy stuff but to supplement with fake krab to fill the roll into the expected diameter is gross. Also ahi tuna appetizer was cooked almost all the way thru. Was hoping for sushi grade ahi seared slightly and sprinkled with sesame. No flavor and just an iota of pink within. Maybe $55 takeout is not the answer. Been awhile since I've been here but questioning coming back.

We had a gift card and definitely won't be back. Service and decor was nice but the food was diner quality with a 5 star price. $25 for a steak filet mignon you expect a decent cut of meat but I swear it looked like it had been dropped on the floor and stepped on. Truth be told I'm 99% sure the mashed potatoes were instant which again blows my mind for the show they put on you would think the least they could do is mash a real potato, just sayn.

Shiro has amazing sushi! We've been here maybe 20x, and it's always consistently fabulous. My favorites are the "red tornado" and the "angry bird". The service is always top notch and I love the old mansion that it is in. It's rumored to be haunted but I haven't seen the spirits yet. It's always a great date night restaurant or fun place to meet friends.

My boyfriend and I went to Shiro for the first time for our anniversary. We both love sushi and old spooky mansions, so it seemed like a perfect fit! The mansion was beautiful - the floors look original and does a lot of the wood and fixtures. It's a great atmosphere, though it is a little incongruous with sushi. Very unique. We found the tables to be small and oddly placed, and the chairs were uncomfortable. I'm 5'3 so I was fine, but my boyfriend is 6'5 and he felt like his knees were against the table and the chair was digging into both sides of his back (it was smaller in width than his back - and he is very slim!) To be fair, it looked like some of the other tables were larger and had different chairs. We were a little amused when our server arrived - she had a wrinkled button-up that had the first 2 buttons open, with an oversized tie loose around her neck. What? The other servers had buttoned up oxfords with proper ties and tie clips. I'm surprised that the management just lets the servers dress how they please- that can be hit or miss. She did make good suggestions and was well spoken, however. The food was very good. I ordered the sushi sampler and was very happy with it - the fish was the right temperature, tender, and not rubbery at all, and the rice had just the right amount of sweetness. My boyfriend ordered the 'Big Bossman' roll which was incredible - the best roll I have ever had. Lots of flavors playing off of each other and great texture. Another positive is the timing - there was a lot of time between each course to really savor it and enjoy the surroundings and the conversation. I like to take my time and our server really accommodated that. We saw other tables come and go while we were there, so the servers seem to adjust well to the speed of each guest. It might be on the slow side for others, so let your server know if you like to dine quickly, but it was perfect for us - a little under 2 hours. We will definitely go back again! Try the 'Big Bossman' roll and if you're a tall person, ask for a big table with comfortable chairs. Hope that your server knows how to tie her tie, and enjoy the unique ambiance and awesome sushi.

Excitement, excitement, excitement. If you love a traditional or unique american style baked sushi, this restaurant will tantalize your tastebuds. From the moment we drove up I realized it is a beautiful antebellum house. The lights have been lit on the outside to make customers shadows seem larger than life as they walk up to the door. Inside, we were invited to sit on the second floor and dine. I was delighted to see the whole house on the walk upstairs. That meant climbing the great wooden but carpet covered middle staircase (think Scarlett and Rhett's sprawling stairway from Gone from the Wind and you'll have it). The floor squeaks appreciatively and the tables are covered in floor length tablecloths. This place is packed on a friday night. A candle is lit once your party is seated and the service from the waitstaff was prompt. Appetizer was served right after drinks. I chose the shrimp cocktail which still can be surprising in its presentation from time to time. This was one of those restaurants. A tall leafy green highball glass of lettuce served up the shrimp...while a concentrated balsamic vinegar was tastefully decorated across the accompaning plate. I ordered a fried Hot and Hot roll (yes And--two huge rolls-- I'm pretty greedy) a Salmon on the Beach, which is baked salmon atop fresh salmon rolls and avocado, wasabi, and cucumber. The two rolls were extraordinary. I tasted the Teriyaki Steak which is chargrilled, served with well cooked asparagus (still a bite to it) and whipped potatoes. To top that off, a pressed bit of fried plaintain holds a pretty presentation. Everything is great here!

Best sushi I've ever had. I live in NYC, but when I'm home visiting family, Shiro is the first stop I make. The ambiance is classy but you definitely don't have to be dressed up to go (you won't feel out of place if you are). The service is generally quick and the sushi chefs are known to throw in some special, off-the-menu, free rolls if you get to know them. The best part, though, is (obviously) the sushi. In all of my travels I have yet to find a place that makes a better roll than Shiro. A few favorites: AACC, Cancun, crispy Philly, spicy tuna. There are definitely always new rolls, and I'm sure you can't go wrong, but those are four that I order every time if I'm with a big enough group. The kitchen entrees are surprisingly good, as well. My parents don't eat much sushi, and I know they've gotten some good fish, beef, and chicken entrees. Do yourself a favor and give Shiro a try. Just don't go there on the nights I'm in town--I don't want to wait.

Personally I would have given 4 stars as it really takes something extra to get that last star from me, but as we were walking to the car after dinner my fiance stated "I think that was the best meal I've ever had in a restaurant." Maybe I'm just a jaded glutton, possibly I've worked in too many kitchens, or maybe I'm just an jack*ss critic at the core, but I just don't give out 5's very often. I'm going to correct course on that here. Shiro was great, it really was. We went there for dinner on Christmas eve and dined like royalty. We started out with a wonder plate of grilled scallops on a light salad that was so good we almost licked the plate. That was soon followed by the 'Surf & Turf Roll', a special item that consisted of a spicy fatty tuna roll with roast garlic ships with thin strips of blowtorch cooked filet mignon on top and drizzled with a pinot noir horseradish sauce. Oh man this was good. This was possibly the best thing I'd tasted in weeks. We then moved on to broiled salmon and a beef teriyaki. Both were excellent. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the beef was tender and had just the right amount of fat. The service was good, our waiter was friendly and didn't seem to mind the fact that he was working on christmas eve. Everyone there was great. We'll definitely be back again. One item of note, I checked the yelp reviews before I made the reservation, and while most of the reviewers referred to it as casual dress we both felt a bit under-dressed. I was the only guy there without a coat. That may have just been christmas eve though...

Shiro is located in a wonderfully old home, doesn't look a thing like a japanese restaurant. My friend and I went here to celebrate both of us getting new jobs, and so we wanted a nice place. The inside was amazing, each room had its own types of decoration, little tables and white table cloths, candles everywhere. The food was great, I got the shiro salad, which comes with a ginger vinaigrette that was superb. I also ordered 1 avocado sushi roll. I don't eat fish, but I love a place that will customize your sushi order. Avocado rolls arent on their menu, but they were happy to make one for me. I also drank a Blue Lagoon cocktail. The only downside to this place is the price. The cocktail itself was $8.50

Sushi is terrific. Our server was rude and slow and overwhelmed and in all honesty I hope she is not there anymore next time we dine. The maki rolls are fantastic and we go there whenever we visit from Chicago to see family. In a old white mansion very cool setting and parking is easy.

Came here on a Saturday, with a reservation at 6pm. We were one of the first ones there, kind of made me feel like I was 70 years old trying to get the Early Bird special. Meh well that's my fault for expecting a popping place that early. We ordered the spring rolls as an app and a Lg hot saki. (I've come to the realization that I don't like hot saki, tastes like hot vodka. Woof.) The spring rolls were okay, nothing to get excited about. I'd skip them if I were you and save room for more sushi. We ordered 4 rolls and some sashimi. Rainbow Roll- 4 stars Snowman (special roll that night)- 2 stars Cancun Roll- 4 stars, it was GREAT! Spicy yet sweet. Spicy Tuna Roll- 3 stars... looked like it was sitting at the bar for a while and then brought to us, still tasted good though. Salmon Sashimi- 5 Stars! Great quality fish, and they didn't place it on a bed of rice like some sushi places (they do this to hide some of the funk of the sashimi). Served with some lemon slices. Awesome-ness. Overall a decent place to grab some sushi. Still on the search for the best spot to grab some sushi in the metro Detroit area.

Pretty good sushi. Exciting and adventurous- the Samba roll was the favorite by far. Small selection of vegetarian options that were just as good as the other rolls. Not authentic Japanese but a fun take on it. Seafood salad was great- highly recommend it over the house salad with ginger dressing. It is kind of a classy place but with a relaxed atmosphere. Large beautiful staircase leading to the upstairs dining area is perfect for your photographic evidence of enjoying a great meal at Shiro's. Waitstaff was attentive and helpful with a good attitude. Would definitely eat here again.

I've lived in Michigan my whole life. Every time I passed Shiro on 9 mile road, I said to myself someday I need to eat there. Well...Saturday I finally made the plunge. We ordered a sushi platter with salads and scallops. The scallops were a tad over boiled, but still tasty. The sushi was above average. What really was interesting was the restaurant itself. It looks like a haunted funeral home and smells musty like Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. I don't think I'd dine at the restaurant at night....too spooky. I probably will go back for a sushi run in the future.

Hiding In Plain Sight Toted as the "Best Kept Secret in Novi", Shiro sits at the corner of Nine Mile and Novi Road in Livonia. If you're looking for traditionally styled japanese architecture, you'll never find it. Think less Edo Period, more Manoogian Manor. The menu is fantastic. Offering a gamut of shushi and entrees, everyone will find something they'll be curious to try, from Shiro Salads to Dragon Rolls to udon. If you're feeling especially hungry, be warned: your checkbook is gonna take a hit. With a full bar available, this is a great place for a stylish night out. Shiro remains a great ace-in-the-hole if your aim is to impress. Visually welcoming, the converted mansion makes your experience surreal, accomplished via candlelight flickers and smoldering chandeliers.

Decided to try out this sushi restaurant with hubby last night after seeing good reviews on it and also finding a restaurant.com gift certificate. The restaurant is located in a nice, densely wooded area in the outskirts of Novi and is pretty easy to find. The mansion itself is kind of spooky looking from the outside. It doesn't look like they restored it a whole lot from the inside...we saw a lot of peeling paint on the ceilings and old fixtures/carpets etc. I don't know if they were trying to maintain the old mansion feel to it or if they just don't have the funds to update it. We sat upstairs at a small table near the staircase and were lucky to have a fairly knowledgeable waiter that seemed to have a good understanding of the cuisine and the sake. We started our meal with a Shiro salad with ginger dressing and a miso soup. Both were pretty traditional in taste, nothing out of the ordinary and/or creative. Next, we had the lobster and crab spring rolls. Those were really good! They came with a tropical sauce (sweet and sour) and a side of corn succotash. The filling of crab and lobster was abundant and the flavors were well-rounded. Once you dipped the spring roll in the sauce and topped it with the crisp succotash it was a festival of flavors in your mouth. :-) Yum! For our entrees, we decided to go with the chef's choice sushi dinner which consisted of 20 pieces of assorted nigiri and 2 rolls of spicy california roll. The presentation was a bit overboard (no pun intended! :-) and tacky though, as it arrived in a huge wooden boat and just barely fit on the side of our table, the stern of it threatening to poke me in the eye. The fish tasted fairly fresh and the spicy california rolls were good. Again, nothing spectacular and OMG moments, yet we managed to finish the entire dinner. LOL. After we finished, we agreed that we liked the sushi at Benihana (just down the street) and Sushi Town (Ann Arbor) better and probably would not return to Shiro. The atmosphere of dining at a mansion for sushi was a novelty but the food didn't quite shine for us.

My absolute favorite place to eat in the metro Detroit area, we go here every year for my birthday for sushi. Full disclaimer: I've never had one of Shiro's actual entrees, so I can't vouch for them and will honestly never try one because the sushi rolls and appetizers are great. A few highlights: the Salmon on the Beach roll gets ordered every time we go, Cancun roll is also good if you like spicy and the Hawaiian roll is pretty good for something a little more sweet. On the apps side, we usually get the Crispy Calamari which is quite good and have also tried the Dynamite and the Agedashi both of which are good. To comment on other reviews, I have experienced slow service in the past, but nothing horrible by any means. Shiro is definitely hidden away there on 9 mile but certainly worth the trip for sushi.

Shiro is within walking distance of my office. That said, I have eaten there dozens of times. The sushi is exceptional. I've never had any of their fusion cuisine. Here's the thing: they are understaffed. If you are starved for dinner this is NOT the place to go. My trick is to go there for a late lunch, sit at the sushi bar, this seems to speed things up a bit. Trimming the trees between Shiro and the lot next door was a big mistake. Instead of some greenery you can now see a metal fence from their patio, guess they didn't consider the aesthetics of this move.

Yum! I was pleasantly surprised by Shiro. It has a unique atmosphere for a Japanese/French restaurant. From what I hear sitting upstairs is the way to go. I thought that the sushi bar area downstairs was too close to the smoking bar area but, the head sushi chef sent our table a special amuse bouche so that more than made up for it. The amuse was the most tasty bite of sushi, spicy some sort of tuna but clean and even my non-raw sushi eating mother in law really enjoyed it. I ordered a glass of the unfiltered sake on my server's recommendation and thought it was awesome. Full mouth feel, clean dry taste with just a little bit of sweetness. Looking forward to another glass or two next time. I had the sweet potato soup to start and my server said she really likes it with a little whipped cream and cinnamon on top so I went that route. It wasn't too sweet, had a nice smooth texture and I really LOVED the whipped cream on top! My husband and I shared a few rolls including Orange Dragon Roll, Spicy King Crab, Negi Hamachi Make and a few piece of nigiri (which they call sushi). Everything was fresh and delicious. I really enjoyed the Orange Dragon Roll which is crab (not krab!) meat, jalapeno, and ginger topped with salmon and lemon. It was just the littlest, thinnest slice of lemon that added a wonderful acidity to the roll. They also brew their own soy sauce which I thought was very nice. My mother in law got Shrimp Teriyaki with mashed potatoes and it looked and smelled amazing. She said she really liked it and that the potatoes were perfection. I don't generally go for teriyaki things but this looked good! The service was slightly awkward but I woudn't say it was bad. Our server was kind of a free spirit but made great recommendations and I didn't feel neglected. Overall it was a great dinner and I look forward to going back! Pssst! Discounted gift certificates for Shiro are on restaurant.com right now :) What better way to try it?!

AWESOME! My wife took me here for my birthday dinner and we had a great time! The atmosphere is nice, we were upstairs by the fireplace. Our server Alex was great (recommended) and we felt special, even though the place was packed! A New Zealand Sav Blanc for my lady, and a "Slapshot" shiraz for me to start the evening. Adamame followed, ..nice, simple, good. My wife had to try a tempura app, so the shrimp tempura came out following which was nicely done w/ plenty of veggies to go with. Entrees were , well, I just did sushi because that's what I prefer, but my wife got the Chilean Sea Bass, and it was fantastic. Came out nice and hot, sauce was perfect, ...very nice! I got rolls. A spicy tuna, an unagi roll, and ....one of their specials, ...the Kiss of Fire roll, ...crab, spicy tuna, avocado, and a spicy sweet sauce with tempura crispy nuggets on top ....WOW!! I was a happy guy! Now, I'm not a sushi snob, so keep it simple and fairly mainstream and I'm good! p.s. Not bashing sushi snobs, ...I'm just not a 'fanatic' so the 'basics' will do me fine. I'd go back in a heartbeat, ...so would my wife, and that's a good thing! This experience, despite what others have said, .... was 5 star!

I went here last night and let me tell you this... I have heard from some of my friends about how the service at this place sucks. I didn't think it would be *that* bad. My assumption was wrong. The service was TERRIBLE. Just to give you an idea: We sat down at 7pm for dinner. By the time our sushi was in front of us, it was nearly 9pm. Nearly 2 hours sitting and drinking. Had I known the food was going to take this long I would have brought a little cot and pillow so I could take a nap. Luckily some friends were there for some good conversation. It made the wait more tolerable. The waitress was not pleasant at all. She was a moping around like Eeyore, the always-sad donkey from Winnie the Pooh. Except Eeyore was a nice donkey and our waitress was mean and unaccommodating. We found out why though... She was still hung over from a holiday party she attended the night before. The sushi is exceptional though. I wouldn't recommend dining here but take-out could be okay. -Henry Balanon *Insider Tip* It's not on the menu, but order the "Salmon on the beach" sushi. It's the greatest sushi roll ever. You'll have to write it on your sushi sheet.

Ah...!! The struggle between 3 and 4 stars is so hard sometimes! The food definitely pushes them into the 4 star range. Unfortunately, the service is what makes them lose a point. I almost hesitate to complain about ANYTHING because I have made sushi eaters out of several people I have taken to Shiro. I am convinced that the somewhat hidden location is the only reason Shiro is not ALWAYS packed. The sushi is some of the best that I have had. It is always fresh and the miso soup is amazing. The wait staff has always been very good at explaining what to try to sushi virgins. The restuarant is an old house that looks very romantic. The whole feel of the place screams romance, which is probably part of the reason that my huband doesn't care for it, and to him I say : suck it up... I love this place! Or I get carryout and don't make him dinner :) My last experiece has unfortunately left me with a bitter taste. My husband ordered cooked fish, which he had time to eat in its entirety before I was served any of my sushi. The sushi chef was very busy talking with his friends and despite my waitresses best efforts, I was served very s-l-o-w-l-y. This was an isolated incident, but poor service is quite possibly by biggest pet peve, so I felt compelled to dish.

The best sushi I have ever had! There wasn't a thing we ordered that we didn't like. Everything and I do mean everything deserved more than 5 stars. The staff is outstanding. The victorian home is to die for! I love it! It had a warm/old fashioned feeling to it. And when I say old fashioned I mean I felt like I was eating sushi in 2011 but in a "pride and prejudice era". I was obsessed and didn't want to leave! Its hard to explain~ you'd understand once you've dined there. And um, hello! Don't hesitate make rsvp because this place was packed. Who ever rates this place less than 5 stars is out of their minds. Would dine there again in a heartbeat. I prob could eat it every day and not get sick of it. Their shimshumi was YUM! I think we ordered about a dozed different rolls. Do I remember the names? Not really! Lol! I just remember wanting to eat everything but had to share! Lol I know! Miss piggy over here! Well, check it out because if u don't......you are SOOOO missing out! Renee

The specialty rolls is where it's at here. You can get a California roll, spider roll, or bowl of miso soup just about anywhere in the country, but finding the double crab roll wrapped in toasted almonds, green onion, fresh crab to the sky, and it's own secret sauce is something only SHIRO has. I marked "Dressy" below only because the last two times I went there I was the only one in shorts. (wife was not happy) By no means is this a tie or jacket place but the customers tend to care a little more about fashion than I do. (this is most likely due to the dinner crowd - I imagine lunch is different) The atmosphere is eclectic and reminds you of old time wealth gone bad. Shiro is in a old two story home with a round about driveway that hasn't seen maintenance in a while. (charming sort of "no maintenance") If you like sushi Shiro is a must try. Service can be a bit slow completely depending on who you get.

Sushi here is decent. We had: California roll with tempura flakes - not bad for a california roll, the spicy sauce just tasted like mayonnaise. Spicy tuna roll with tempura flakes - tuna wasn't that fresh and I've definitely had better. Hawaiian roll -- (california roll topped with mangos and a tropical sauce) the sauce kind of ruined the roll, it tasted very sugary and fake Dynasty roll -- (king crab tempura with asparagus, tuna, a balsamic sauce) the sauce here was also pretty mayonnaise-y, the king crab inside the roll was pretty meager. Tuna Avocado salad - the lettuce was cheap iceberg with a few green lettuce maybe. Surprisingly, the salad came with a good amount of tuna and avocado, which was great. Overall, the sushi rolls were pretty small and relatively expensive. The sushi wasn't as good as I would have liked it to be. Also, we went wanting to use a restaurant.com coupon, but couldn't because it says "for dinner only" and they wouldn't let us even though we were there at 3pm. A little disappointing, but also our fault. I would probably not pay this much for mediocre sushi and not so fresh tuna.

This is the third time I've been to Shiro, and will certainly continue coming back. They have THE best sushi and THE most beautiful, intimate atmosphere in the area! The wait staff is very friendly and helpful as well. AMAZING place to take a date as well. ;) Thanks for another great evening Shiro!! :D

The Shiro has become a disappointment compared to the early days. There is much better Sushi and Sashimi available at a few other places in the area. The only good thing about the Shiro is the surroundings. Today the waitress was a real disappointment, though. Didn't enjoy the visit and will go elsewhere in the future.

Shiro's is a fabulous restaurant in a "haunted" mansion (it's true!). You wouldn't think it was an Asian restaurant from the outside. When you walk in you're greeted by a huge staircase... there is dining on both levels. I love the ambiance and the feel of the place. The menu is great with a wide array of choices. Sushi is top notch. I frequent this restaurant for the sushi.

Novi offers a lot of options when it comes to sushi. You can go bare bones at One World Market's back counter or do the "businessman's" version at the Cherry Blossom or family-style at Ajishin. For those looking for something a bit different and special, Shiro is the place to stop. Located in an old residential mansion, Shiro is where you can take that special someone for a birthday dinner or a date to impress. The sushi may not be the best in town - there's a lot of competition for that title - but I've always been happy with the selection and flavors. The service is usually on the ball, prompt and courteous as you would expect in this price range. There's plenty of options when it comes to ordering drinks or finishing up with a dessert. If I was to break down the stars, Shiro would get 4 stars for food and service and 3 stars for the facility. While the old house experience is different and cool, it's also the one place where Shiro is lacking. While they've creatively made good use of their space, some of the areas show a lack of care and attention. Just because you are in an old house doesn't mean that the facilities can't be upgraded to match the rest of the experience. While that aspect of the restaurant keeps it from earning a solid 4 stars, it's more of an annoyance than anything that distracts from the dining experience. If you haven't been, you have to treat yourself to Shiro at least once. Once you do, I'm sure you'll come back again and again.

I'm quite a fan of this place, reasonably priced sushi that isn't in a strip mall or on the other end of the spectrum that it's less about the sushi and more about the decor. Our waitress was a little...odd, which is why I knocked a star. Otherwise, try the Diamond sake cold it doesn't have the harshness that some sake has.

Let's cut to the chase. We went strictly for their special rolls. My cousin and her friends have sworn by this place and while we were in town, we had to give it a shot. It has been about a year since I've been there and to this day, I dream about going back. Okay, so it's not that serious. But really, their special rolls have surpassed any other restaurant's--and I've been to many. The service is amazing. Someone is ready to help you and fill your water at all times. We waited a pretty decent time, considering there were only two chefs working behind the counter. The rolls are super saucy and full of cream cheese that you don't really need spicy mayo for more flavor. We devoured the entire plate and couldn't really breathe afterwards. Oh! I almost forgot--their lemonade is amazing. Definitely fresh and hand-squeezed.

We recently dined at Shiro for a birthday party. We had several out of town guests with us. All I can say is that our experience was incredible. We sat upstairs and had more than enough space to ourselves. Our server was very attentive without being intrusive. The food was excellent and everyone in our party of 10 left highly satisfied. We will definitely be back soon.

My husband and I went to Shiro for the first time last night. We had really been looking forward to it. Boy, were we disappointed. The setting is beautiful. The service was HORRENDOUS. The hostess was disorganized and our server was rude. She plunked our menus down & then did not return for for 20 minutes. She then promptly forgot our soup -- after asking the hostess, our miso soup arrived 20 minutes after we ordered. Everyone around us was complaining. And the rest of our food? It arrived, plunked down rudely again, an hour after we ordered (a good hour & a half after we had arrived). Was it good? It was fine. We had various nigiri sushi & special & regular rolls. Was it worth the wait? Definitely not. We will not return to Shiro. There are plenty of other adequate, let alone good, sushi restaurants in the area.

Exceptional sushi. The best I've had in the Detroit area. Awesome fusion cuisine of Japanese and French! We had escargot and sushi! What a night! The location--a converted mansion--makes for an intimate and/or romantic dining experience. My husband's favorite sushi place in Michigan!

A bit disappointing. To be fair to the place, I was there on a freezing cold December night and wasn't in the mood for cold food, so I didn't actually eat any sushi, which is likely their speciality. That said, I tried a number of other standard Japanese plates (Unaju, an eel dish over rice, a crab roll, miso soup, and vegetable tempura). Of all of those, only the crab roll (served on a subtle, nice pea puree) was any good. The building is lovely and romantic. My dining companion and I both commented on the tiling and fixtures in the restroom. I'd like to give Shiro's another try for sushi. But, that's very unlikely, since Musashi is so great for those rare times when I want sushi in Detroit.

The ambiance and restaurant is very cozy and romantic, although the bar can get a little loud. The service was exceptional. As far as the food, a couple of menu items such as the snapper are no longer served but they have been on the menu for two plus years; however, the sushi makes up for this. Some of the sushi has different sauces as well as additional tempura flakes which gives this a unique twist compared to many sushi haunts locally. This sushi is a divine meal. I have had the sushi here twice and both times have been excellent and fresh. This past time, I tried the sea bass special which was very good, I prefer Mon Jin Lau's Chilean Sea Bass but this was still very good and cooked to perfection. At a table of 6, we were all very satisfied and look forward to returning. Another great feature of Shiro is that several blends of wine are offered by the glass which you don't see too often around here. The only reason I rate 4 rather than 5 stars is that the menu needs to be updated.

After driving past it and talking about it for years, we finally went a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. We had reservations for 7pm and were seated right away. I booked the reservation late, so I was not disappointed in our table near the sushi bar given there was a group party upstairs and seating options appeared limited. Our waitress was top notch from start to finish. We were offered recommendations on sake and even offered a sample since we were unsure. Moreover, she quickly realized from our questions that we had an interest in vegetarian options. She was quick to inform us of options not yet on the sushi specials menu. With that piece of info, we tried 2 vegetarian options along with traditional sushi options. All were great and the vegetarian sushi was very well received given they went way beyond the standard cucumber or avocado options you typically find at other sushi bars/resturants. The atmosphere was pleasant, a bit louder in the sushi bar area. Also, the dress was very mixed and very casual which surprised me a bit at first. We enjoyed a small dessert which was very economical and fit our appetite. Lastly, we walked around a bit and the hostess was quick to let us know we could go upstairs and look around even more. Fantastic building, venue and great experience overall. Check it out!

i ate at shiro for a birthday party this time, i've been a handful of times before, the menu always seems to be changing (which in my mind is a good thing), the sushi is very western for the most part with lots of mayo, cream cheese and avocado and tempura. they have such rolls like beef roll and rolls with tempura chicken for those who are dipping their feet into sushi. they do have lots of chirashi, and unagi and things of that nature that are quite tasty and luckily they have tobiko roll which is delicious! two friends had the beef teriyaki and said it was great. the sashimi scallop roll had ALOT of wasabi on it, almost too much. the spicy shrimp tempura roll and the sunshine roll with crab were great, although i wish they had some masago on them! miso was of course good, as its pretty hard to mess that up. appetizers of scallop salad was great and the calamari was also great in a spicy sweet red sauce. the waitstaff was very attentive and willing to explain menu items. the moscato wine is a good pick, and the shirotini was also recommended by others i dined with. pretty good place to bring a sushi hater where you can both get what you want, but not very authentic.
