I have been to Happy Sushi about five times and every time my dining partners and I have had wonderful meals! We usually order several rolls and sashimi to share, but the star here is the Tempura Udon. The broth is so savory and noodles are just the perfect texture. I prefer their udon broth to Ajishin's just because I think their is more depth of flavor in their broths. Fish is fresh-tasting and rolls are done well, good rice to seaweed to fish ratio! Sashimi cuts could be better, but still taste good. I have always gone for a later lunch or dinner and it's usually not busy. Don't let their location turn you off. It's really a great hidden gem!

The service is mediocre and most of the rolls are mediocre as well. I am giving this 4 stars for the tuna sandwiches. Ive never seen another sushi restaurant have these, as they are unique, but they are absolutely my favorite thing and will keep me coming back.

A friend and I were in the area shopping and decided we wanted sushi. This place was close and the other place we went to was closed down and in the process of opening under a new name. I hate to say it but we left anything but happy. A few hours after our not so great sushi we both came down with food poisoning. The raw hand rolls she ordered looked anything but fresh and the avocado rolls had parts of the pit in a few of them. Lucky for my tummy I didn't eat any uncooked fish....my friend on the other hand... Yikes. I can't say anything about the other food here but I will say I won't be venturing back to try it. .... It defiantly left me with a very sad sad tummy :/

Good sushi. Some of the staff is better than others. The udon and bento boxes are pretty good

I had a monster craving for a hot bowl of noodles. I originally headed to Ajishin, but with Grand River torn to hell, I headed over to Happy Sushi. Its been some time since I was last there. I could not recall if they closed at 2 or 230 after lunch. I got there just around 145pm and it was almost empty. One couple in the corner eating. Perfect timing! There were several delicious items I wanted to try but I couldn't recall what some of them were. I knew I wanted one of there vege sushi rolls. The vege roll they offer has these tasty black mushrooms, spinach, and avocado inside with the rice outside. I opted for something called Kam Nanban Soba. It did not take long to get either items. The Soba soup was a large bowl of dark duck broth with duck meat, green onions, seaweed, and of course a heaping helping of hot soba noodles. I've never been a fan of Duck, but this broth was savory. I enjoyed slurping and honestly could of likely had a 2nd bowl it was perfect... fit my cravings completely. Best part the soba, sushi, and a coke was only $13. However, service seemed spotty. There were 3 servers and just me and another couple eating and the Servers kept disappearing. I realized they were closing lunch soon but I didn't like that I had to wait 10mins for a drink refill.

This is my go-to sushi place close to home and work. I know Ajishin is just down the road and may be better, but the couple times I went there several years ago and had to wait forever for a table kinda dissuades me from going back when I'm looking for a quick lunch or dinner. The snow white roll (on the special roll menu) is very tasty, but lately I've been getting an udon combo meal that comes with 2 pieces of inari and a small roll (spicy california for me). The ginger salad is good too, but usually pushes me into the area of uncomfortably full when I get that with the udon combo. The price is good, and service is quick.

Great sushi!! I cannot get sushi anywhere else because I'm disappointed. I love happy sushi!

This review is only for their spicy california roll. I usually favor the spicy tuna roll but at this restaurant I could eat the spicy cali roll until I fell into a food coma!

Happy Sushi is a very good place if you're looking for good sushi at a great price! I've only tried their sushi - I haven't ordered their actual entrées - and it is always very good. The Las Vegas roll is delicious. If you're looking for a new place to try I would highly recommend this place! My only concerns with this restaurant is the friendliness of the staff and the speed of ordering food. I've been here multiple times and I was disappointed a couple times with the wait time for my food but I guess that's expected for fresh sushi!

This place is adequate, and seems to be content with that. They left the tag on the condement holder from where they originally purchased it. This just isn't a place to go for ambiance. If you want fine sushi, tempura or soup that is fast with a fine price, this is an acceptable place for that. I had the veggie tempura and an avocado roll & the miso soup. PROS: vegetarian options, quick service CONS: mid-level to low end on every measure

Found a june bug in my Chiraishi Bowl. Informed the waitress, was shouted at for making a scene and that it wasn't their fault for placing a bug in the rice. Sure, I understand that they didn't put there on purpose, but there was no apology or reimbursement for contaminated food. Very disappointed.

I live close by, so I was hoping for a place that was a good bet for a good meal. Tonight, was the third time I tried Happy Sushi. The first two times, the food was decent enough to try again. It is not top-notch Japanese cuisine, but passable for a quick bite. The first two times that I was there, the service wasn't great, but again, decent enough. So, I tried it again tonight. I was there with two other people and we were not greeted, but were shown a table. We sat for about 15 minutes and realized we didn't have even water! We flagged down the very unfriendly waitress, asked for water and ordered our meals. We grew more and more impatient when over a half hour went by without even miso soup. There were no apologies or even excuses, just aloof silence by the waitress. We were not the only ones not being served, but others choose to wait it out. At this point, we got up and exited the restaurant. No reaction from the wait staff was observed. We went down the street to a very good Chinese restaurant and enjoyed a good meal. Coincidentally, we saw a couple that we also spotted at Happy Sushi, they said they waited 40min and also left. At this rate, Happy Sushi will not survive. Bad service and mediocre food! Will not return!

It's still quite new so the service needs a little ironing out, but overall it was a delicious meal. The Volcano Roll was superb, the udon was delightful, and the inari was the best I've had. It wasn't the freshest sushi I've had but the flavor was excellent. I will definitely be going back for more.

A few coworkers and I had ordered a variety of sushi rolls for lunch the other day.. I read some reviews, looked at pics and went for the volcano roll. I was pretty underwhelmed. An $11.00 little roll needs to knock my socks off for a stellar review, this did not. The presentation was odd. Everyone else's roll came neatly arranged in a plastic container with a clear top. Mine was messy. Randomly placed in a Styrofoam box. It was not flavorful, the texture was a weird mush, and then topped with what tasted like some kind of hot mustard mixture. Needless to say, I didn't eat it all. My boss threw his spicy tuna in the garbage and called it disgusting. He thought the meat wasn't very fresh. The other two said their sushi was amazing. Go figure. I'd rather eat sushi from Kroger.

This is pretty much a chinese restaurant. None of the food was even authentic. Not only was the staff nasty and rude,my chicken katsu looked like road kill. I tried to tell the servers but they insisted that nothing was wrong and even forced me to pay for the nasty stuff because the owners were too cheap. They didn't even bother to come and see what the problem was. One of the worst places in Novi. Hands down.

Happy Sushi is aptly named since it is my happy place for sushi. Located in a strip mall, I usually order take-out, but the other evening, dining in was in order. That evening, I had the tuna roll with avocado which was okay since it included only tiny portions of the main ingredients. Much better was the mackerel nigiri and tamago, each with its own distinctive flavors. However, it was the Spider Roll that was spectacular. Since I am allergic to salmon (sad, I know), the chef replaced it with white fish. The fish was well textured, had wonderful mouth-feel, and was delicious with the other ingredients. The sole server was efficient.

The food was ok. The service and cleanliness was poor. The bathroom was dusty and the toilet bowl cleaner was out and disgusting. I will not be back here.

Good prices, great sushi! My friend and I stopped in here and loved everything we ordered, especially the tempura California rolls! We enjoyed the miso soup, and she loved her ginger salad. All in all, a great little sushi place.

Stopped in for dinner here on a Saturday night with my fiance. Greeted promptly and seated where we liked. We had the miso soup and the seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was a generous portion and tasted fresh. We ordered the following rolls: Dragon Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, Eel Cucumber Roll, Mike's Roll, Yellow Tail Roll, Las Vegas Roll, and Salmon Avocado Roll. Rolls were all good in size except for the Eel Cucumber Roll, I felt like it needed way more eel. My favorite roll was the Mike's roll. The Dragon Roll's tempura batter was alittle on the soggy side which was a let down for the most expensive roll on the menu. Waiter and waitress were prompt with refilling our water and left a pitcher as well. I'd recommend this place.

This is a good sushi restaurant. The sushi is tasty. You've got your basic rolls and a few, but not too many, pretty good specialities. Given the heavy competition in Novi, there was nothing in particular that made happy sushi stand out other than the prices. The rolls are relatively cheap and pretty good, so there's great value for your money. I just wish there was more variety. The wait time here is longer compared to other sushi restaurants, too. Nonetheless, this is always a good place to come to with some friends and will be making another trip soon

Since this is two minutes away, I figured I would give this place a try. I ordered take out over the phone and the lady was kind of rude, basically said "ok bye" and hung up after asking me for a name for the order. No time frame or price given. I get there in 15 minutes and contrary what you might think on the outside (sushi place in a strip mall isn't the most appealing sometimes), the inside was kind of cute and the waitress who helped who helped me was very friendly. I ordered miso soup, AAC roll, volcano roll and novi roll. The bill was pretty cheap for that much sushi so I was pleased. As far as the food -- The novi roll was kind of sloppy, miso soup and AAC roll was sub par, and the volcano roll was too hot in temperature for me (spicy yes, which is good, but I prefer my sushi cold or at least room temperature). Honestly, I have had worse sushi, and given the fact that the waitress was surprisingly nice compared to the rude lady on the phone, I would give this place three stars at most. And you can't beat the short wait and cheaper prices!

Very good sushi. We order from here once a month and are always very happy with it. Our favorite is probably the Vegas Roll, although you can't really go wrong with whatever you pick. We usually order it as carry out because there's not much ambience there, but as I said, the sushi is great. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking about it.

I order carry-out from this place once a week and I have never been disappointed! Love the Las Vegas roll and the spicy salmon roll.

I was planning to go to Fumi for Japanese food, but since the place was rented out I went here instead. Boy was this a mistake. As somebody who was raised by a Japanese mother, I am mildly insulted that they call this a Japanese restaurant. It's not. It's far from it. And to top it all off, the service was terrible. There are plenty of decent Japanese restaurants in Novi, so don't punish yourself by going to this one.

Went here on a first date as a recommendation. As someone who's been to Ronin and Noble Fish, I was disappointed. The sushi was mediocre at best. They were willing to accommodate an allergy and bring a side dish of eel sauce for my date. The house special roll is GINORMOUS! I think I like the volcano roll and spider roll best. The reason for only 2 stars is we were bombarded by fruit flies the entire time we were there... To the point we began to worry about the safety of what we were eating. I even had to send my first glass of Plum wine back because a fly fell in it. And the staff is not very friendly... Kind of cold.

Happy Sushi is really good sushi. I've gone here for years and it is consistently good and efficient. I always get the same thing, I always go with my dad, and I would say that it is between 4 and 5 stars. The ONLY reason I am giving it 4 stars rather than 5 is because I don't think it has the atmosphere to be anything other than a lunch joint. Give it a try!

  • Jessica W.

Happy sushi is indeed a happy place. The sushi won't blow your mind, but it won't blow your wallet either. You can get stuffed on good quality rolls for less than you'd pay to leave hungry at any other sushi restaurant. My advice? Go for a spicy [anything] roll. Always good, I appreciate the consistency they bring to the table. I would be afraid to blow the cover on this little strip mall gem, for fear of it getting as crowded as places like Ajishin, but I think it caters to a different clientele.

  • Rebecca B.

I was a regular at Happy Sushi when I lived right behind the strip mall it is located in. The waitstaff is quite friendly but they do take a long time to acknowledge you and get your orders/beverages going. If you are in a hurry or on a lunch break this is probably not the place, but to chill out for a while over conversation and dinner, that is cheap, this place is good. I've had some shell in my crab rolls a few times (at least 4) which made me stop ordering them all together, just a warning, but maybe I got unlucky.

    (3)
  • Jack M.

I'd like to give a rating of 3.5 stars. The sushi and regular Japanese dishes are acceptable. The ramen is the same level as the typical "Chuka sobaya ya" (Chinese dinner) in Tokyo-shitamachi. The daily lunch special is quite reasonable. Serving time is pretty quick. All in all, it's better to go here for lunch.

  • Kaleigh P.

I love this place. My fiance and I come here all the time and we love everything from the service to the food. They don't try to add cucumber to everything to make it seem fresh, it's actually fresh! They make the best spicy mayo that has ruined all other sushi places for me. We are happy to be able to go to a place where we can order anything on the menu and know we will like it.

Had happy sushi earlier today. The Las Vegas roll was very good and fresh. If you're getting a to go order remind them to give you soy sauce and ginger. Overall great quality sushi and at a great price

I finally tried Happy Sushi and I am thrilled that I did. I placed a take-out order for 3 rolls, ran over to Busch's right in the same strip mall) to grab a few groceries, then picked up my sushi-perfect timing! I tried the california, shrimp tempora and deep fried one that is topped with a jalapeno (sorry, I forgot the name) rolls. Each one of them was very fresh and super delicious. The prices were really reasonable and the food was made quickly. This will definitely be my take-out sushi place from now on!

I am a sushi fan and have been dining at Happy Sushi on and off for several years now. Happy is in many ways unremarkable: the waitstaff is quiet, the décor is subdued, there is no music, and the restaurant is usually near silent when I visit. However, for the price the sushi is very good. I have not been let down by any roll, and when I visit Happy I tend to go for more simple rolls instead of the complicated rolls found elsewhere. The simple rolls at Happy are still very tasty, and the prices are just right. In addition, I appreciate the late hours they keep. The only word of warning I have is the last time I was there someone came in for takeout and reappeared several minutes later because there were mistakes with their order. I cannot say if that is typical, but if you get takeout check your order. If you live nearby and are tired of waiting at other sushi restaurants around Novi during peak hours, keep Happy Sushi in mind for a quick, tasty, and thrifty meal.

OK, there are many Japanese restaurants in Novi area. This place is a hidden gem for Japanese food lovers. The price is very good (specially for lunch) and everything in their menu is delicious. They also create their original menu which is pretty good as well. If you like small Japanese appetizers, you will have to ask for appetizer menu. They have more 30 items in the menu. Mmmmm... My favorite is Katsu-Curry. It has two deep-fried pork loins and curry sauce with rice. Noddle dish like Ramen and Udon is good as well. They have really good Sushi too. But it is not the only traditional Japanese food!

I decided to give Happy Sushi a try because Ajishin was closed and I was really in the mood for some noodles. After looking over the menu, I felt pretty optimistic about what the food at this new place might be like, despite its location in a run-down-ish strip mall and the weird, dumpy decor inside. The very cheap prices also had me intrigued. We didn't order any sushi, so I don't know if it is as good as others seem to think, but the noodle dishes were bad enough that I'm not going to come back to find out. The duck in the Duck Udon was very overcooked and tough and was in a super greasy, flavorless broth (and not "flavorless" in the delicate, muted way that makes exemplary Japanese cooking so special). The shrimp in the Tempura Soba was also so overcooked that I didn't bother eating the second one. It was so rubbery that it required some serious gnawing to bite through it, and it hadn't been deveined, and I burned my mouth on it. The broth with the soba was okay. The portions were very big. If I had spent a bunch of money here I would have been furious, but it didn't set me back too much financially so I think I'll get over it.

Simply delicious sushi. I don't know what their trick is but I've been to upscale places in Vegas/Atlanta/Miami but when it comes down to it, decor does not a satisfied sushi eater make. Order the happy roll or pretty much any roll and you'll be a happy camper This is not bursting with ambiance but you won't notice the walls when you bite into their rolls. *check hours before you go! We have been going here for 5 years now and I always will when I'm in the area!

This has been my go-to sushi place for a couple of years. It's ALWAYS delicious and very reasonably priced. My fiance and I typically get miso, edamame, spicy California roll with roe, spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll and the Novi roll. The Novi roll is no longer printed on their menu, but you can still order it - and it's the most delicious sushi roll I've ever had!!! Ajishin (right down the road) is great, but if you do not want to wait in line for a table head to Happy Sushi.

  • Rach B.

Not good sushi. Have tried it several times based on so many good reviews thinking maybe the chef was just not having a good day when I visited. All 3 times despite ordering different things the sushi was not at all good. Very over powering fishy taste. I don't understand how they have so many good reviews. I encourage all that think this is good sushi to try some other places and you will be suprised. The resturant was clean, every one was nice and friendly but the sushi was not good and i wont be back.

I have been there roughly 50+ times and 90% of the time the Sushi is great, cali rolls, salmon, tuna, vegas etc. good sushi. Prices are great as well. Service is comparable to your average Chinese restaurant the same waitress has served us 99% of the time there and English is not her first language, but she does okay. Atmosphere is pretty basic, not a fancy place for a date night, good for quick bite or pickup.

Sushi that makes me happy! This is a nice cozy little sushi shop located on the northwest corner of 10 Mile and Meadowbrook in the Busch Market plaza. The prices are very reasonable and I found their fish to be fresh and the rice was tasty as well. I liked their miso soup, it was more of a green onion flavor and not much of a seaweed / fishy smell like some misos you come across at other places. The ginger salad lacked much ginger flavor but still good. My favorite roll here is the spicy California roll, it has a nice kick to it! One thing missing... no fortune cookie at the end of the meal. Otherwise very good food, service, and prices.

I love sushi, but am always annoyed at the price. You wouldn't go to this place if it wasn't recommended to you (it looks a bit scary in a strip mall) , but it is excellent. They have a liquor license and you can get Asahi for a reasonable price. The edamame is fantastic, always piping hot with just enough salt, and for $2.25. My husband always gets the Tekka Don ($15, with miso soup), and I either get a noodle/sushi combo - a huge bowl of ramen or udon with a ca or spicy tuna roll, or I just get some simple rolls. I recommend this place to anyone who likes basic sushi and doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg.

Just had our worst meal in the last 6 years. Ordered a Chicken Teriyaki and Shrimp Tempura dinner combo. The chicken Teriyaki is just 8 strips of rotisserie chicken with maple and soy syrup.. It tasted very sweet and horrible. Shrimp tempura had 2 pieces of shrimp deep fried in a cornflour batter along with 5 pieces other veggies in the same batter.. Came along with boiled rice and miso soup (The only edible thing in the whole menu).. Would never ever go there again.

Good sushi. Not a great atmosphere but good service and a good selection. Carry out works, too. Kids work well there too. Alaskan pipe roll is the best choice.

Great sushi! Reasonable prices. Menu includes some other Japanese dishes but come here for the sushi. Small place, but never seems too crowded. The TV in the corner on the wall seems odd, given the decor, but it's otherwise a very cool place to eat.

My husband and I eat at Happy Sushi whenever we want decent but well priced sushi. The sushi is not amazing, but it is a much better value than, say, Cherry Blossom. We always know what to expect when we are there, which is why we keep going back. Sometimes that is all you really want and need from a sushi restaurant. Right?

Far and away, my favorite Japanese restaurant in general, and my second-favorite sushi bar (yes, I classify those as two separate things) after One World, also in Novi. First off, I'll state that I've never, ever had to wait for a table at Happy Sushi. Perhaps that's because I go at slightly off-hours (11:30am lunch, or a 5pm dinner), but regardless, it's never terribly busy. There's always a steady stream of customers, though, including plenty of take-out clients. That, to me, is a sign of a good restaurant. Also a good sign? The fact that many of the clientele are Asian. I've always taken that as meaning the restaurant is reasonably authentic, or at least quite pleasing to native palates. But what's important to me is that the menu is pleasing to /my/ palate...and it certainly is here. I tend to focus mainly on the sushi offerings, ordering that as my meal rather than, say, a bowl of udon or a plate of tonkatsu. And here, I can safely say that the sushi is fantastic. The Alaskan pipe roll is perhaps my all-time favorite, of any sushi place. Of late, though, I'm finding that the spicy tuna sandwich has almost taken the top spot. (Interestingly, the Alaskan pipe roll leftovers kept just fine until the next day at lunch--the rice didn't get hard at all. Mind you, I wouldn't recommend waiting longer than that to eat leftover sushi, but you might get full...) I've tried some of the non-sushi fare as well, and Happy Sushi doesn't disappoint. I'm a fan of the tekka don, a simple but tasty dish; the shrimp curry is my wife's favorite; and the udon never fails to satisfy. I also enjoy the tempura offerings. The miso is delicious, but the ginger-dressed salad is dull and...well, dull. It's a typical Japanese ginger-dressed salad, straight from the fridge. As for cost: Well, I'm a bit surprised to see a couple of people comment that it's pricy; I've found it to be among the cheapest Japanese restaurants around, particularly if you consider value for money. Sure, there are cheaper sushi places (One World comes to mind), but Happy Sushi will not break the bank like some other places will. I love that I can get a delicious shrimp curry dinner, with miso soup and a salad, for less than $10. That's hard to beat. What about the staff? I think they're just fine. Never too pushy, but the waitstaff can be a bit timid--I think this is more a function of the language barrier than anything else, and it's certainly not off-putting as well. The staff as a whole is very friendly, and the itamae never fails to offer a warm and heartfelt "thank you!" as I leave. Finally, a note on the decor... Sure, it may be a bit dated, and with the coverings on the front window, the lighting is a bit subdued--but I wouldn't call the interior "dark" by any measure. Things could use a bit of updating, but as long as they keep the Sushi Cat poster hanging on the wall, I'm just fine with it. Oh, and for those who have a problem with such things (I do not), there's a TV in the corner that's constantly on, generally tuned to a news channel. I've never found it to be a distraction. So, if you're looking for good sushi eating in the area (I drive all the way from Brighton to get it), I can't recommend Happy Sushi highly enough. In fact, I'll be dining there with my in-laws this very evening!

This place is really good. I always get the spicy scallop roll, top notch and fresh. Ive heard from a friend that this place has a reputation of quality in the local Japanese community cant really prove or disprove that but I know I like the food. The tempura is also very nice, light and crispy. Great fresj food with warn friendly service makes this palce a winner for me.
