This is one place I enjoy when visiting Midland. The menu has changed since I was there last, not as good as before but still better than the other local options. Great atmosphere and good service round it out for four stars. I would have said five in the past but the menu changes don't support that.

This review is value oriented. I do not have a complaint about the food flavor at all. The service was o.k. The prices were too high for the amount of food. I understand the customer is paying for quality over quantity. That being said, i have had better sea scallops in Sedona. I can't recommend this restaurant.

Terrific restaurant located on a nice little street. Perfect for spending an afternoon with somebody special. The restaurant is probably one of the more chic places to eat. Our party (of 8) was seated at the largest table (actually sits about 12) in the middle of the restaurant. Table is higher than the others and you actually sit on modern-looking stools. Environment: good lighting, good spacing, modern/contemporary design (including something that looks like hair coming out of the wall). Food: Terrific. Cooked well. Seasoned well. Presented well. They also serve a variety of bread with your meal. Careful because you may get full stuffing your face with it. Wine: Great. The waiters may not know their wines as well as you'd expect in a restaurant of this caliber but they're often young and likely less experienced. A little pricier, considering it's location in Midland. If you don't dress "appropriately," employees may be hesitant to help you. Ex: They are more likely to ask to hang your sports coat as opposed to your hoodie.

When I travel to Midland, I know that my dining options are very limited. However, I find that I can dine three days in a row at Cafe Zn. Modern ambiance and always busy in the evenings. In the morning if I want to indulge, then I splurge myself on a chocolate croissant. Breakfasts are large portions and always delicious. You may want to carve out time to eat as sometimes the morning service is slower (food-wise). The dining room can get loud at night up until about 9:00. The salmon is a favorite, always cooked perfectly. Make sure to save room for desserts!! The Sabayon is to die for!!

I have eaten here once for breakfast and once for dinner, and both meals were excellent. On my most recent visit, my husband had the shrimp fettuccine (one of the evening's specials) and I had the Angus NY Strip steak with burgundy shallot butter, creamed spinach and heirloom fingerling potatoes. My steak was perfectly done, and the side dishes were rich but not at all greasy or heavy. Our server was friendly and efficient, and we didn't wait very long for our meals. I like that the dining room is fairly small, and the decor manages to be both cozy and contemporary. Before we checked out the next day I stopped by the cafe to pick up some pastries for Easter breakfast and it was difficult to pick from the amazing selections of sweets and breads. The lemon coconut cookies were my favorite, but the croissants were incredible, too.

Really nice place. Great food and service. A little pricey but definitely worth it. One of the better restaurants I've been to in Michigan so far.

Great food. Great atmosphere. Perfect date night. Loved the dressing on the H salad.

In my opinion what differentiate cafe zinc from it's peers is their pastry dessert. You dine there for the modern atmosphere and the dessert. Appertizer and entree are well thought of and are almost there with Shari, but more experimental. Popular with young people. Price has gone up for dinner, probably since they have become very popular in town.

In a small town without much to offer, this place is a breath of fresh air. Food is decently priced and was very good. Service was not bad, but nothing to write home about either. I'd definitely return if I'm in need of a socially exciting, yummy dinner!

5 star food and 5 star service. Highly recommend the French Onion soup - best I have ever had. Main dish, scallops. For dessert, the key lime pie. Great to see that Midland has a place like this.

I've eaten here twice in the last month and really enjoyed it. I didn't think the prices were out of line. I really like their tea. Try it some time. Last time I was there I got the french dip sandwich. It was yummy!

This is a great place to eat. The bread is excellent and the menu always has interesting options. I'm glad it's here in Midland.

This place is beautiful, if you are looking for an elegant and affordable place, this is it! I have been there for lunch and breakfast, with all people in my party pleased with their food. Sitting out on the porch is lovely and the inside is stunning. If I lived closer I would be a regular.

Love this hidden gem located on the end of Main Street! You can sit outside and enjoy the summer while treating yourself to wonderfully prepared food. We had omelette bacon eggs and pancakes. All were some of the best. They also have cottage cheese which is a rare find there days. Coffee, juice and tea were all great!

We came here for breakfast today (8/15/15) and left without getting served. It took approximately 20 minutes after we were seated to get a waitress to field our orders. I ordered an "Orange Creamsicle" smoothie along with my breakfast that took an additional 20 minutes and for $5 was not worth half the price. After about 15 minutes and halfway through the smoothie, we noticed a group of people who had been seated about 30 minutes after we were and they were already eating! Also note, the restaurant wasn't busy. At all. We promptly got up, paid for the smoothie, and will never return to this very over-rated establishment. Don't waste your time or money!

Outstanding food and service! I am always pleased when I dine here for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The preparations are thoughtful and creative. The entire staff is professional and efficient.

I am a big fan of French Onion soup and I have to say they do a real, real good job here. I would totally go for it again. I went with the Sea Bass which was cooked perfectly. Very juicy with nice meaty texture with the sauce vierge. The menu mentioned saffron braised fennel but got a mushroom vegetable mix that I had to pass. Overall I think the food is good, but have had better.

It's a spendier place but it's actually worth it, unlike most of the expensive places in Midland. I like coming here for a nice date or special occasion. You never know when it's going to be quite busy but Sunday is usually a good night for dinner here.

I have been to Cafe Zinc on numerous occasions, so here's my feedback based on my experiences overall! Pro's: - Breakfast and brunch is always very good, and the coffee they serve is freely flowing and delicious. - I love the bright, white wash, fresh ambiance. It's modern, chic and takes customers "out of Midland" a bit. - Their salads are always fresh and prepared with unique tastes: I certainly recommend! Considerations: - I've had a mix of experiences with servers which - to be fair - is understandable. Even so, I've had a handful of servers who were very off putting and snobby. - My lunch and dinner meals at Cafe Zinc have been very hit or miss over the years. I've had a few dismal meals, but have had some great ones as well. - Prices are a little steep, but the food quality is good overall. - Most recently, there were multiple families with small children at the restaurant for breakfast. Cafe Zinc doesn't really have a children's menu and the ambiance is, I believe, intended to be a little more adult and upscale. I wouldn't normally mention this (I love kids!), but the space is a bit snug and the children were very noisy, which was pretty awkward and disruptive.

Rule 1: Take reservations on Valentine's day! It's insanely ridiculous that they did not. Luckily we came in at 4:30 and had a 30-minute wait rather than a 2-hr wait that others had as we left. Luckily they had a good bar to keep us while we waited. The food was good, but well overpriced ($33 for a 3-4oz portion of sea bass) and the portions are small. We'll come again, but for lunch.

Excellent food and even better service. Staying at the H Hotel so had dinner and breakfast here. Everything we had was excellent. Definitely would make a stop here next time in Midland.

A couple dollars more than a typical lunch, but well worth it....especially with the amazing free bread! Oh, and don't skip dessert no matter what!

I had high hopes for this restaurant. Fabulous decor and a posh environment in the middle of dreary Midland. I wanted to love it so badly that I suffered through several terrible lunches hoping each failure was a fluke. On my fourth and final attempt last week I was served a Thai noodle dish with the most amazingly overcooked, globby mess of a noodle bed that I am now certain the cooks on the lunch shift have no idea what they're doing. The menu looks promising, but the cooks are just not technically proficient enough to execute it properly. On my last visit I had "browned butter squash risotto" with so much not-browned butter on the top of the terribly-overcooked risotto that I had to pour it off into my bread plate. The salads are not dressed - a personal pet peeve and an absolute crime in a place that bills itself as a high-end restaurant. Do not send me a bed of dry salad ingredients, which are not seasoned, and plop down a side of dressing, I could go to UNOs for that. As a side note, and also a full-disclosure, I am a classically-trained chef and I worked in high-end restaurants in Los Angeles for years before moving back to Michigan. Prior to writing this review I e-mailed the owners, explained my grievances in detail, and offered (at no expense) to come train their staff in how to properly cook a risotto, dress and season a salad, and toss a bed of noodles. I informed them I did not want to write a negative review because I am invested in the success of local restaurants. They did not respond and after last week's mess I see they didn't take my advice either. Alas, I won't be returning.

5 star service, upscale ambiance, and a plethora of menu options each prepared with detail. I enjoy the reasonably priced beer options and rotating chef's special. The servers are very knowledgeable and quick. The prices are steep so be prepared to pay upwards of $50 per person on average but you are paying for the experience as well. I would try the rotating chef's special or the Salmon which is very tasty. Great place to grab a bite while staying at the H hotel.

Zinc is a beautifully appointed eatery. Modern decor. Very good service and food. Bread and baked goods are delicious. Menu ranges from simple (burger, sandwiches) to posh (kale-pomegranate salad). The menu and decor appeal to the well-heeled. Rumor has it that the interior was designed by the wife of the CEO of Dow Chemical. Great place to take your wife or daughter. Women seem to love the place. Had a burger and the kale salad. Really good. Very flavorful. Very pricey. $13 for the smallish kale salad. Price and decor don't appeal to me.Wouldn't go there on my own. But nice place to take a lady.

Nice place. Great staff. Attached to hotel H. I think it's overpriced. Not disappointed, but not overly impressed. Midland needs high quality food at a reasonable price. This is good. Interested to see what else Midland has to offer.

The interior of this establishment is beautiful. But for us, the food did not match. Cafe zinc really needs to up their game if they are going to charge such outrageous prices for the food. We started with crabcakes, which hardly had seafood in them and were very doughy. Next came caprese buffalla, i've had better. We ordered a 27 dollar chicken dish, very dry, the vegtables were brown and overcooked. My partner ordered the salmon, again, dry and wayyyy too much butter. The hilight of our evening?, the brown sunflower seed bread that came with dinner. We had just got back from a trip to chicago and dined at some really great trendy restaurants that were fantastic and less expensive. I find alot of these restaurants in small towns with no surrounding competition become very complacent and lackluster. Cafe zinc is one of them.

If you're in Midland you should make sure to stop by Cafe Zinc. I've been there twice for breakfast and once for lunch and have yet to be disappointed. The atmosphere is a mix between sleek/white/modern and casual French bistro. The food is well executed with fresh, flavorful ingredients. My visits have been during the summer so I'm interested to see how the produce fares in the winter. SUMMER OMELET: The tomatoes and basil they used were first class and this dish really zings. The omelot comes with hashbrowns and toast. Unless you want a ton of butter on your toast make sure to ask them for butter on the side. WHOLE WHEAT FRENCH TOAST: The terms whole wheat and french toast are somewhat oxymoronic, but the kitchen really found a way to make this dish work. The toast must soak in butter, cream, etc. forever because texturally and flavor-wise you'd never know that wheat bread was used, although it's fairly obvious from looking at it that they use a wheat baguette. Although the menu lists the dish as being "filled," the orange cream and candied walnuts actually cover the french toast and the cinnamon butter is on top. The flavors worked very well together although I found no need for the cinnamon butter. CROQUE MONSIEUR: This is a five star dish. It's pretty traditional but the mornay sauce (a cheesy bechamel) is out of this world. While this is totally not diet friendly, it may be the best croque monsieur I've ever had.

Excellent Bloody Mary's, service was a lil slow, but heaters on the patio made for a relaxing breakfast!

One of the only "City-Like" places in Midland. I have been here twice and love the upscale ambiance. Having moved into Midland after living in a few major cities, Café Zinc is a breath of fresh air from all of the chain restaurants and really is not ridiculously priced. I absolutely LOVE the falafel sandwich. I substitute the sauce with avocado and it is a great meal! For any other "city folk" in Midland, I highly suggest Café Zinc.

Fantastic food and excellent service. A great place for fine or casual dining. Wait staff was too notch - they helped with good and wine selections and were attentive to our needs. A great place to take someone on whom you wish to make a good impression.

During my stay in Midland, I had two breakfast meetings at Cafe Zinc, and thoroughly enjoyed my meals. The service is excellent, the coffee is good and strong, and the decor is clean and modern. The food is very tasty for a hotel restaurant. The first day, I enjoyed the daily special, which was an egg white frittata with mushrooms, peppers, and onions. Served alongside crispy hash browns and rye toast, it was definitely a splurge. But it was oh so delicious. The second day I decided to go a different route, and had the steel cut oatmeal, served with brown sugar, fresh berries, walnuts, and milk. All are served on the side in cute little stainless steel cups so you can customize the oatmeal to your liking. (If they had offered Vermont maple syrup instead of the brown sugar, they might have earned a fifth star.) If my travels bring me back to Midland, I look forward to checking out Cafe Zinc's lunch and dinner menu.

Pretentious but without a good reason. Food was good, not phenomenal. It might have tasted better outside but the last outdoor table was apparently reserved for the host's friends? Also might have tasted better had we felt even a little bit welcome. We waited a long time for everything. We do a fair amount of traveling and fine dining, and this was a serious disappointment. If you go, wear your best Sunday clothes, maybe you will have better luck than we did.

Attached to the H Hotel this is a cute little bistro/cafe to grab a bite to eat, or even a pastry and coffee. I have had breakfast here many times and have not been disappointed. Their menu has some standard breakfast fare but also some more specialty type dishes. On my most recent visit I tried the Southwest Egg Roulade and it was great! Just the right amount of spice without being too overpowering or heavy. I also had the Eggs Benedict which were good but not the best I've had. They were incredibly accommodating to the large group we had and splitting the bills up for us.

Impressive service! Delicious food! Wish we would have stopped by for dinner last night, but was fortunate to enjoy breakfast there this morning! I truly enjoyed their Smoked Salmon Omelette! It was served with crisp hash browns and bacon. I tried their smoked chipotle ketchup that truly complemented the hash browns without overpowering them! The omelette was superb! My wife enjoyed the Crunchy French Toast with Orange Butter and Michigan Maple Syrup and raved about it! Well done!

Went to Cafe Zinc for breakfast this Sunday morning with my other half and my mom. Had a great breakfast - as usual. We walk in and there's a little bit of a delay trying to get a table as the place is crowded for Sunday breakfast. Naturally. But we were able to get a table in about 5 minutes. We were sat at the middle of a long table - originally set for a group of about 20. Odd - but we took it. One great thing about Cafe Zinc is that they are always updating their menu. This is different than other restaurants completely eliminating menu items...the menu items are still roughly the same or are still great! I sit down and see this on the menu: "Crunch Grilled French Toast: Crusted with cinnamon, nutmeg, corn flakes and orange butter, served with 100% Michigan maple syrup"...how can anyone pass THAT up? So, I was dead set on ordering that WITH a side of their great sausage links. Usually, I don't like ordering new items, necessarily, as I like doing my research before hand...but again, wowwwww... My other half got scrambled eggs, toast, and hash browns. Items not necessarily on the menu, but she's an insider at this place and knew she was able to order these more common items as sides instead of ordering off the actual breakfast listing. My mom got the Sun-dried Tomato, Smoked Turkey and Sharp Cheddar Cheese Quiche. She originally just wanted something simple, but since she ordered first, she got the quiche instead of a more simpler offering of eggs and toast. With it being a little busy in the cozy, somewhat loud atmosphere it took a little bit for our food - but not too long. Then came our dishes: The french toast. It was AMAZING. I had no major complaints. I just wished that the orange butter on top wasn't as frozen as it was - but I just slid it under the french toast and poured the syrup on top and didn't notice a thing. The corn flakes surrounding the dish was the x-factor. The french toast didn't taste like any normal french toast - as you can see in the picture - it almost tasted like I was biting into a scone or croissant. Boy, I couldn't stop raving about it. The eggs/toast/hash browns combo that my other half got. A lot of food for ordering three sides. She desribed it as "yummy" as usual. The quiche. She originally thought it felt like it was wasn't completely cooked, but considered that it may have been the cheese that was making it resemble that texture. She enjoyed her dish and it was more than enough as she didn't finish it. The Zinc lost a point as they forgot my sausage and we had to wait for our waiter to turn his attention our way as his back was to us - washing his hands (or something) - and we finally got his attention to come bring me my links...it took less than a minute for him to bring them to the table...they must have just been waiting in the back. Overall, combined with all of the deserts we got after our meal from their dessert display case, this was yet another great experience at Cafe Zinc. I just wish it was warmer and more dry so we could have sat outside on their patio. Grade: A-, they would have gotten the rare A from me if they would have remembered my links and I didn't have to remind them about it. I also wasn't too fond on our seating in the middle of a long table as if we were in a school cafeteria. Those problems withstanding, the food was immaculate and didn't find one thing wrong with it.

The ambience is nice and decor was cool, but the food was only average. I like the play on chemistry words and elements of the periodic table: Ca Fe Zn.

I've been here for lunch, and really enjoyed the french onion soup and the seared tuna salad, but dinner left something to be desired. My husband ordered the strip steak, which was tough and very fatty. For a $30 steak, it was disappointing. I ordered the pad thai with tofu, which wasn't pad thai but noodles with a sesame peanut sauce. It was still good, just not what I expected. The vegetables in it were very fresh, which added nice flavor. My complaint about the dish lies with the tofu. There were four very large piecesof tofu that were tempura fried and had absolutely no flavor. There also wasn't enough sauce to incorporate the tofu into the dish and get some flavor on it. The service, however, was excellent. I'd go back for lunch, but for the price I don't think we'll be back for dinner.

I'd like to give it 3 stars, but the food is way too good for that. I wasn't really impressed with Cafe Zinc's decor. It was too cold for my taste, I felt like it seemed a little stiff and too pleased with itself to be welcoming. But the people there seemed to be really happy to be in that atmosphere, so I think most people would enjoy it. The windows/walls open up to outdoor seating, so I think this place would be really great in the summer. The food was phenomenal. I was so happy to be eating such great quality food in Midland. I was sad that I had snacked a little before, not knowing how good the food would be. I didn't have room for dessert, which looked really great. I had a seared tuna dish, which came with a risotto that went perfectly with it. I made the mistake of trying another dish that was way stronger than my tuna, which seemed to dampen my enjoyment of the more subtle flavor of my dish. The dish I tried was a salmon dish, which had tons of flavor. Everything was cooked perfectly - my tuna had a textbook sear to it. The H Hotel where Cafe Zinc resides is a nice, posh hotel. It has the best bathroom I have seen in all of Michigan. I stole a nice stack of high class paper towels from there. I really absolutely loved the food, but for the atmosphere and the high price, I am not sure I would go back very often.

Wow... The H Hotel (where Cafe Zinc is located) had recently completed it's full renovation the last time I was in Midland, including opening two restaurants and a bar. I rarely expect much restaurant variety in Midland...thus the new Cafe Zinc caught me completely off-guard. The atmosphere is bright, open and airy... 'French Bistro' themed. The pastries created by their French pastry chef are spectacular, and their entrees would easily please the discriminating palates of customers used to the restaurant variety of a big city (Seattle, Boston, etc.). If you are visiting Midland on business, or if you live there and just never go to downtown restaurants, do yourself a favor and check out Cafe Zinc...you won't be disappointed.

I had dinner and breakfast here while staying at the H Hotel which this restaurant is part of. This restaurant bills itself as a bistro, but it's a bit fancier and the prices reflect it. It's not a large restaurant but it's airy with lots of windows. The gas fireplace lends warmth to the room. The dinner menu wasn't extensive but had something for everyone--a couple of steak dishes, some fish, a pasta. I started with the bibb lettuce salad, which was fresh and had a nice vinaigrette dressing. Then I had the NY strip steak and it was cooked to my liking, though it could have been tastier. Maybe it was the cut of meat, maybe it was the way they cooked it (probably on frying pan or the like, not over a flame). The creme brulee was competent but not extraordinary. My dinner partner felt the same way about his french onion soup and steak. Overall, I felt it was a bit expensive for the quality of the food given we're talking about Midland, MI, but the atmosphere and service made up for it. Breakfast the next morning was excellent and priced more reasonably. The western omelet was packed with ham, green pepper, etc., and it came with hash browns and toast. Excellent. There is another restaurant next door which is fancier and even more expensive. I don't know if it's the same owner, but based on the quality of the food I experienced at the cafe, though,I can't believe the restaurant next door can be worth the $35+ entrees.

Cool-but-not-cold modern atmosphere, delicious food, and a pleasant and professional staff. This was our first meal when I moved to Midland, and I have to say that the one-sentence review I got in my welcome packet from work; "Cafe Zinc, good everything" was as true as it is ungrammatical. Bonus tie-in to the town's central industry, chemistry: the logo is the periodic table symbols Calcium, Iron, and Zinc. Ca Fe Zn.

I have been here twice now and I am not a fan. A very impressive looking menu with a kitchen staff that isn't capable of executing a fast food menu. The time I had the poached salom, my salmon was still frozen in the center when I recieved it, and nothing on the plate had flavor. The place looks like it is trying to be trendy and upscale - but watch for dirty chairs and food/gum stuck to the legs of the charis and under the tables.

I am a frequent guest at the H Hotel and have spent many a meal at Cafe Zinc. I love the clean and modern design of this space and they have an extremely friendly staff. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options offer modern takes on classic American and French fare. The chef was even kind enough to share a recipe with me for one of his amazing ravioli dishes! One of the best in Midland!
