Outstanding service. We showed up as a party of eight for lunch. We were immediately welcomed and made to feel comfortable. Right off the bat tables were rearranged and menus were handed out so we didn't have to crowd aroumd the chalkboard menu at the counter. Not sure if he was the owner, but the guy who took our orders and brought our food was about the best example I have ever seen for how to treat the customer. He anticipated our needs perfectly. Two of our party decided to share a meal. He had it split into two plates without being asked. He just did it. The food was really good. We had a great lunch! This is how you run a restaurant.

A diamond in the rough!!! This place is excellent! Haven't tried one thing I didn't enjoy and boy am I a picky eater! Every time I come out to visit its always the first place I think of... Their tomato bisque soup is AMAZING but then again I haven't tried one that wasn't... Sandwiches are great too!!! Only thing I haven't tried are their burgers... A must if you're ever in the Midland area. However, avoid during DOW lunch hour if possible and if not make sure you get there early.

Great for lunch, Hallie Berry Salad is great among other items. Eat here frequently and never had bad food. It's a little pricey for lunch but at least you know you won't leave hungry.

This location is good for a quick stop while driving through Midland. Their soups are homemade; I tried the lemon egg meatball soup, because it sounded very interesting! It was a nice cream-based soup with rice and the egg was used as a thickener. There were two meatballs, just enough to wet your appetite. I ordered the half-Halle Berry Salad with chicken, which was chock full of strawberries, blueberries, feta and walnuts. There was a generous amount of cubed chicken as well. Overall the salad was great, but I'm not a fan of overly-sweet dressing and their raspberry dressing was way too sweet! Good thing that they automatically serve it on the side. We ordered a basket of sweet potato fries. They were a bit soggy, so I wouldn't order this again. Gotta serve fries hot and crispy! The counter people were very friendly.

Cafe American is one of my favorite restaurants and coffee stops in Midland. They are known for their salads,sandwiches, and soups. Their coffees round out a great meal. You want to time your lunch time not to correspond to their busy times if you do not want to wait in line to order and have it less noisy for a discussion with your friends or business associates. My favorites are the Greek Isle and Hallie Berry salads. Enjoy!

It's a good restaurant, for Midland. The food is decent but it's expensive. Usually pretty busy but the line moves quick. Lots of room to sit and eat.

So, Midland is not Yelp central, but I thought someone from the Dow lunch crowd would have written about this place by now. It really is the best cafe in town - one of the best I've been to. Their cheeseburger is great! All the ingredients are so fresh and of high quality. I can't speak highly enough about their tomato bisque soup, or their specialty salads. The Halle Berry salad has lots of fruit and a great raspberry vinaigrette. Seriously, I go here as often as I can when I'm in town. Avoid weekday lunch hour - it's too busy with the Dow lunch crowd. Great service, excellent food, and reasonable prices. I want to go back right now!

My husband called me before lunch and asked me to "yelp" a place in Midland to eat at. Of course, I am thinking - Midland, Michigan?? What could possibly be exciting there? However, the review of Cafe American Restaurant via the husband was 4 stars. He reports the exterior is nothing exciting, but the food is good - he had the soup and salad combo as mentioned by others. It is a modifed cafeteria type restaurant, so if you are looking for fanicer bypass.
