The Portside Inn was suggested to me by Yelp when spending a long weekend in Marquette/Big Bay. We popped in...the place is like a timewarp to the 1970s with sea captain/boat stuff everywhere. Menu was solid seafood..luckily they are located a few blocks from the shores of Lake Superior. Friendly staff...very hometown feel to it.

Our Time at The Portside: There was a few tables but not even close to being slammed. Waited 30 min just for appetizers Waited over 45 entrees (nothing major either 2/5 was salads) Father wasn't happy with his food Ask to talk to a manager Matt the owner/"chef" comes over "Oh you don't like our fresh sliced turkey?" "I had your ticket timed out perfectly" "Oh I know who you are. You put in an application here like 6 months ago. Is that what the problem is?" Laughs at us to our faces We can hear them mocking us in the back from our table. At that point, yes, you bet your sweet ass I caused a scene. And here I was trying to defend them at first when my dad was getting pissed. We will NEVER, EVER go back there and I urge all of you to abstain from giving them your money as well.

This was absolutely delicious and a great place to bring the family. The food portions are great. I had the fettuccine Alfredo (homemade Alfredo sauce) with shrimp and it was amazing. My mom tried the chicken enchiladas which were great and a huge portion.

Excellent food at very reasonable prices. I had the Southwest chicken wrap . Their pico de Gallo is wonderful . Great local beers on tap.

Stopped for lunch. Ahi Burgers were great, portions generous. Service very friendly and attentive. Was nice to get seated on the outside patio. Didn't read the previous reviews until I was done eating, glad I didn't as I might have gone elsewhere. Happy I didn't.

I've never seen such incompetent bartenders at a supposedly nice establishment before. I ask the bartender to recommend a wine and her response was "I don't drink wine so I don't know." What an idiot. I told her it was like a librarian not knowing how to recommend a book. This monument to incompetence then says "I don't feel like serving you," and walks away. What a joke! There's been plenty of times when I've deserved to be cut off but this was not one of them. I explained to the manager that I was not rude or vulgar in any way. His response was "I stand behind my bartender." Maybe train them in addition to standing behind them. In conclusion, there are many other places in downtown Marquette to frequent other than the Portside. I suggest going to one that teaches their employees to respect their customers.

This place had one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten. Sauce was tangy, crust was crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. Pepperoni was spicy and the cheese was plentiful. Would love to eat another one!

The Portside is a Marquette staple and it kills me to give it 3 stars. The food is great (breadsticks, pizza, sandwiches....all of it). Local (Michigan) beers on tap including local cider on tap, can't beat that! The servers are friendly and fast. The problem is the wait and over crowding. The place is too small to be a pub & a restaurant. I don't mind waiting for 25 minutes for a table, but there is no room to wait. They should consider handing out those vibrating "hey your table is ready" things so you could at least take a walk. Sitting at the bar is so uncomfortable because people pile in around you like its a frat party. We've walked out on 3 occasions ourselves and have watched many others do the same, it's a shame.

Food was ok. However the waitress (purple/blue hair?) confronted us before we left and very loudly asked why there was no tip. We were deeper into the Portside talking to friends and planned on leaving a cash tip on the table when we walked out. Needless to say I'll never go back in. Tipping is just that, a show of appreciation. Perhaps the owners should pay you better.

This is our second time at the Portside. We arrived in time for some good drink specials and stayed for dinner. I had the filet and is was cooked well and was tasty. We also had their breadsticks, which were very tasty. My wife had French Onion Soup and salad which were also very good. Service was good and the place was nice.

Back again after a year, and just as happy with the food at the Portside as in the past! The "Edmund" ($7.75) is a very large and stuffed authentic Reuben with a stack of tasty definitely-not-off-the-Sysco-foo-truck pastrami, mild sauerkraut, nice Thousand Island type sauce, all on a bakery-made real rye bread. Comes with a huge stack of potato chips. Wonderful! The bowl of french onion soup ($4.75) was about as good as it gets and topped with real mozarella cheese. My wife almost licked the bowl. Next day, the fish fry ($7.99) came with three pieces of excellent hand-battered cod and a huge helping of homemade french fries. The bowl of clam chowder ($3.75) was generous, very nicely seasoned, and yummy. Add the $3 Michigan cans of microbrew all day, or the $2.50 Michigan microbrew pints, and you have one hell of a good value. To boot, the lovely pub atmosphere, spotlessly clean environment, and pleasant, polite, and professional service makes this one of our favorite stops of all times.

This has long since been one of my favorite spots in Marquette, whether it be for a quiet drink, lunch, or full dinner. Their pizzas and calzones are unrivaled in town, as are many of their menu items, all crafted with quality ingredients. The Skatchata (sandwich) is a signature item of theirs, made on their own pizza dough, and is well worth stopping in for. Their burgers and breadsticks are considered local staples, and anyone who's ever had them will understand why. They also feature a great variety of Michigan beers on tap, and happy hour features $2 Michigan pints. The Portside's waitstaff and bartenders (and kitchen crew) are a cut above, as well, being knowledgable, competent and funny. They truly make the place feel like a better-stocked extension of your own kitchen. Thanks, guys, for the great job you do.

Went here on a Friday night and had the fish fry for $9.95 The Cod was Very Moist+ they give you plenty to eat. I also had the French Onion Soup, Onion Rings, and could not eat it all. We all were Very Pleased with the food and service The Widow maker Beers were Good too !

Yeah, it's really really good. It kills me to have moved away from Marquette, if only for the great foods I'll be missing. Their thursday (and friday? not sure) special for soup is a mushroom soup, which is utterly amazing. It's mushroomy, garlicky, and super creamy, absolutely delicious. Pair that with their "legendary breadsticks". Oh man. They've got an amazing cheesey-garlic dip for the bread, it's so good. The fish meals are also great haha, I just get really caught up in the garlic stuff, it's so great. The only problem is that seating is somewhat limited and due to its popularity, you can expect long wait times to be seated. I'd recommend having dinner a little early to avoid the crowds.

A very cool nautical themed restaurant. The steak cut fries are really good. We had a really long wait, but the food was good. The breadsticks seemed like a local favorite and a must-eat.

In town for the weekend, tried what seemed to be the faves. Nachos, breadsticks, onion soup...all very delicious. Had a short wait and enjoyed a nice porter and company. We'll be back. Good value and service.

This place has a warm cozy feeling. I loved the bar, the food, the groovy nautical decor, and the staff. I know I will be back every time I'm in Marquette. Had the whitefish cake (because that's what I order when I'm UP), it was amazing. Breadstick, yum. Husband had the small nacho's, could have fed 3 people. Son had the burger and loved it, another had the fish fry and was very happy.

Usually I would recommend this place to anyone for the good food and nice drink specials especially happy hour. However I was here on a date the other night and as we had finished our drinks and we conversing, the host came up to us and all but KICKED us OUT. He asked if we could be up and said he had seats at the bar that way our booth would be open for other patrons. Assuming we would get up and move right over to the bar we obliged. Upon standing we noticed there wasnt a single seat to be had other than the ones we had just left he said the gentlemen on the end would be leaving soon and after standing no seats. This place RUINED our 2nd date and would NOT recommend it to anyone not expecting to be push right out the front door when they get busy

The atmosphere is wonderful for those who love a dim, nautical themed bar. Their French onion soup is to die for. I usually get the fajitas. Super good! And enough to share! :) Friday night fish fries are great as well. Just plan on a long wait to be seated. I don't think they take reservations unless its a large group. It only has about 8 tables and booths. But definitely worth the wait.

  • Amber R.

This place is always busy and it can take a while to get a table, however the breadsticks alone are worth the wait. The bar is always available so you can have a drink if you need to wait. The service is quick and the servers are always helpful.

The food was just fine. I ordered baked whitefish and it tasted pretty good. I asked for tartar sauce and was told they only have it on Friday nights. Really? You serve fish on your every day menu but can't provide tartar sauce every day? Ok.

This is an excellent restaurant and bar in Marquette. It can be busy, but it's atmosphere is rather cosy and the menu is geat. Their homemade cheese sauce and bread are a noteworthy way to start the experience. I came here several times with friends and family, and would go again if I were to return to the area.

  • Alisa M.

I am a big fan of their french onion soup and bread sticks, I would return for that. The service was bad, the waitress was not knowledgeable about the food or specials, and smelt of cigarette smoke every time she returned. Not the most friendly and I heard you can get breadsticks with the same dippings else where, so I may try that before I return here.

We love this place. Great little side deck for a bite to eat or a beer while waiting for your table. Yummy breadsticks, pizza, nachos and my son loves their onion soup. Local watering hole feel Go...you'll be happy you did.

I'm giving Portside 4 stars for their long standing reputation around Marquette as being a nice place to dine with a great food selection and THE best breadstick spread you'll find. I will mention that recently I went in with a party of 9 and the three pizzas we got were sub par. Maybe it was an off night or something cause they are usually pretty good. A fail-safe approach would be the burrito. Outdoor dining during the summer is also pretty nice and cozy. Not much of a hang out place unless you stay in the bar area but if you want to yoop it up, you might want to keep looking or head next door, think its Aubry's, they are supposed to be expanding.

We have been going to the Portside since the early 80's when we lived in the area. We no longer live in Marquette but come back every year for vacation. The Portside is the first place we go when we get here and the last before we leave. The atmosphere is wonderful, the service is terrific ( in all these years we have never had a bad service) the food is AWESOME! The breadsticks are amazing I don't know what they do to them but they are good! In fact I've not had a bad meal there. The beef nachos are made with shredded beef not ground beef. The fish fry is one of the best. And the bar is great. Good beers I love that they focus on local beers. If you are in Marquette Michigan you'll want to stop in at the Portside.

Best place we tried while visiting Marquette. The atmosphere is casual and cozy with a maritime theme including a cool fish tank. They have a fireplace in back and the bar is intimate. All staff was wonderful. Our food was beyond excellent! TV's if you want to watch a game. Not really a date place, more of a hang out with friends pub place.

There are few places in Marquette that everyone knows of and has such high raves about. Yes, perhaps it is due to the nostalgia of "Wildcat" days, or perhaps it is the familiar place mat that we all still smile at seeing and quickly take out or pens to do the activity once again. However, Portside has amazing soups (try the onion soup), pizza (pesto and pineapple) and various well priced salads and sandwiches. BUT, you have to have the breadsticks. They are what is worth your time and keep everyone coming back. Side note: they also have good local beer on tap and a great atmosphere for conversation. You will see families to the local art students at this establishment.

The Pizza isn't what it was when it was voted the best in town in the 80's, but the bread sticks alone are worth the trip!

Came into Portside for a fish fry on a lazy summer day, and I was not disappointed when I walked out. The food was great, the drinks were good, and the atmosphere had that old bar feel. Overall, not a bad place to get a meal with some good friends on a weekend!

Really good food. Make sure you get the breadsticks with the sauce. They service was really good and the prices weren't to bad.

Face it, everyone goes here for one thing and one thing only... the breadsticks! Went here with my fiancee and three friends a few days ago and between the five of us I think we had three orders of breadsticks and we tore through them. Love the cheese spread that comes with it!

Great pizza, take-out and dine-in. Nice service. Prices are not higher than most other Marquette restaurants (must be related to food transportation costs). One of my favorite places in town. Decent atmosphere, and a mix of locals and students. The server recommended a piece of chocolate cake that was about eight inches tall with a dozen layers...it was ridiculously good and split between two people lasted a day or two. Don't go here everyday or you'll need to buy new pants. Would recommend to all!

My wife, her cousin, and I went here for dinner and drinks yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was packed at around 7pm when we first arrived, so we sat at the bar and got beers. We were informed by the pleasant bartender that they had a full menu at the bar if we wanted, but we opted to wait for a table. We were seated in about 20 mins, and had great meals. We all shared a potato soup, which was the last bowl out of the batch, so the waitress comped it. It was delicious, so she really didn't need to, but it was very nice of her. We then got their Reuben, a cheeseburger, and the shrimp special of the evening. All three meals were fantastic. Service was great. I highly recommend this place if you're in Marquette.

I am mostly a fan of this place for one big reason, happy hour. Their happy hour is from 3-6 Monday through Saturday and they offer $2.50 Michigan craft pints. This deal alone is worth waiting for a table. But beware, if you do not plan to eat a real meal there, they will be pissed at you. The place is so small, they have very limited seating, and it seems like there are always a handful of tables that are reserved for elusive groups of people making their available seating even smaller. Its nice in the summer when the patio is open. But even still, they ask you if you plan to be eating before they seat you and if not, you are limited to bar, window, or bench seating on the patio. The patio is a great place to sit in the warmer months. I also really like the placement, right between two buildings with plants and trees overhanging some of the tables. It has a real "beer garden" feel. The waitresses will get huffy if you get a table and then only order drinks and/or appetizers. Speaking of which, please do yourself a favor and order the bread sticks. They come with a delectable garlic cheese spread concoction that will have your eyes rolling back in your head. Seriously, get them.

Ate lunch here after doing the local Farmer's Market. It was hot out and humid and a beer and a burger was just the ticket. I had the British Burger and the Mrs. Had the Crab and Shrimp Salad. The salad was very nice and the crab was good. The shrimp were however , nice size but had that watery just thawed out watery taste and feel. Grilled shrimp would be the ticket!!! The salad was served with a nice piece of garlic bread. All in all a nice salad. Now, the burger on the other hand was a surprise. As I said I ordered the British Burger advertised as a burger with lots of bacon and swiss cheese. When it arrived it looked great and was served with raw onion, tomatoe, and lettuce. Where is the bacon I ask???? It was crumbled bacon under the cheese which was a disappointment. Was expecting some slices..............but............it had bacon flavor and crispy bacon crumbles under the creamy swiss cheese. I am a Ketchup-aholic. I put ketchup on everything, especially burgers. When our meal arrived, I was searching for the bacon and got sidetracked and forgot about the Ketchup. I assembled my burger with the condiments and started eating . Enjoying my burger and telling my wife How good it was, after I was half-way through with my burger, I realized I forgot ketchup!!! I NEVER forget Ketchup. Ketchup goes on everything. Well, Guess what??? These burgers don't need Ketchup. It was cooked to a perfect med rare just the way I ordered it. Seared, juicy, and beefy tasting. Damn, wish I could do em at home this way. Really , really great burger..........Damn It was so good I left the Ketchup off the 2nd 1/2 of my burger and enjoyed the hell out of it. Besides the great burger, we also love the fact that they serve only U.P. Local tap beers. Great menu, great beer and good service!!!! Hard to find in the U.P. But they do it well. What a great lunch experience!!! Slammer!!!

Good food. Too bad the management is rude and has no idea what customer service is. This used to be a favorite of mine but has gone downhill in recent years. Save yourself the aggravation and go to Aubree's down the street or Vango's on Third. The Potside Inn embodies everything that is wrong with customer service today.
