When it comes to eateries that specialize in one or two items, and they do them well, the prospect of deciding which one is better becomes a very subjective process. One might have a better ambiance, tastier side items, a friendlier staff, you know, nominal differences. The main dish, however, is still the star at all of these places. That's how it is at Fresh Fish; we went yesterday because we were craving amazing fried seafood for dinner and that's exactly what we got. I chose the orange roughy. The fish was moist, the coating was light, crisp, not greasy; they utilized some kind of amazing seasoning on top of everything that had great lemony, peppery flavor. The fries and the mushrooms were pretty damn good too but the fish was certainly the star. They have a seafood case that encompasses most of the space inside and displays all of the available options as you walk in. You simply select one and they fry it up. There may be some disagreements as to which area does a better fish fry, London, New Orleans perhaps? This is, however, academic debate I feel. Kind of like who does the better pizza, New York or Chicago? It's all good! There are likely some reasonably better places out there but Fresh Fish is among the best. It's definitely no frills but so delicious!

If you're looking for a local spot for fried chicken wings and fried okra look no further. Every time I call Fresh Fish, I plan to order something other than those "crack" seasoned wings, every time I fail. They are just too good.

The parking lot has been repaired and the building has been remodeled at the front entrance! Now I can just get wings- not wings and an alignment!

Twenty deep-fried "crack" chicken wings for $11.99? Call 20 minutes ahead and pick up an aluminum tray of yummy, crispy, fried goodness. The crack seasoning is unlike anything I've tasted before, and it works! They also put it on the french fries. A nice touch was a little bag of napkins, ketchup, and hot sauce to go with our wings and fries. Very nice! Parking is plentiful, although I'm not sure I would be comfortable there at night. But, we're going back for sure sooner than later!

This won't be a stop for everyone--- Certainly not a place to go if you're watching your weight. Or blood pressure. Or if you're overly paranoid about cleanliness. But if you're looking for tasty fried wings n seafood, I recommend ! Salty, but in a good way. The seasoning, overall, is quite unique. I just tried the much- hyped "crack" wings, and yes they were pretty darn good. Also got the fried shrimp and was pleasantly surprised. Very fresh tasting and not alot of batter--- fried lightly and perfectly crispy. Yum! Also a fun experience--- can be a busy place and lots of interesting folks inside during dinner rush. But that is just my perspective.... Ive heard this place described as "hood" by others, but I had no problems as a single white girl and everybody was very kind.

Definitely one of the best places in the area. That special "crack" frying process always turns your food into crisp, golden magic that's amazingly never oily and perfectly seasoned (if sometimes a bit salty). But that's what makes everything delicious. Awesome catfish nuggets, wings, clams, even shrimp lightly dusted with such an addictive spice. Items come with little cups of cocktail sauce or a tangy hot sauce for dipping. Crack hushpuppies, too - 8 for under $2 (try that other fish fry place). Yeah, the area is a little sketch; about 1/2 the visits I've been asked for change. But don't forget the low rent district keeps the prices real. Why not five stars? First, I don't mind a dive, but the front could use a little elbow grease and dusting. And there's always flies. I don't mind the fish counter, but I know it's possible to do without the flies. There's also occasional inconsistencies such as abrupt service or errant fish bones, but I can live with those for food this good.

Yes, their food is delicious. Everything I've had has been good. I think they might actually sprinkle crack on their food because not only me, but everyone I know is addicted to their food! Yum. Go here if you love fried food. You have to order your food via phone though, it's only a take out place. You can buy full uncooked fish from them and they'll clean it if you want them to. You can pick out any size fish and have them cook it too. They will take care all your fish needs.

Based on their chicken alone, which is all I've ever eaten from Fresh Fish (it's too good to try any thing else), this place is a must try for some take home dinner or catering! The seasoning is undescribable... non-greasy, spicy, sweet, tangy, slightly crunchy, and cannot be replicated! I am dying for a bite just reminiscing about it...

Believe the hype!! Lorraine's review says it all. I tried the crack wings, fries, and hush puppies...un-f'ing-believable! The wait was about 20 minutes having not called ahead...the phone was ringing off-the-hook, and people were coming and going non-stop...signs that it was worth the wait.

This is not a place that will ever tell you "we have both kinds of fish - salmon and tilapia." Fresh Fish offers some fish varieties that don't turn up every day. I opted for white bass and ocean perch. I waited over a month to write this so my details may be hazy, but I liked the larger one better, which I think was the bass, because it had a real fish-type vibe instead of just being a delicious fried snack. Unfortunately they were out of buffalofish, which I've almost never seen on a menu. And, yes, you'll have to try the crack wings, thankfully available in small doses for people who want to focus more on fish. They're open very late; Google says 2 a.m. other than Sundays (11 p.m).

I hope you all know that the seasoning they use is msg in powder form and lemon pepper seasoning. Msg is highly addictive and If you don't trust me look it up on the internet yourself. The seasoning is nothing big you can make it at home. Just mix msg powder and lemon pepper seasoning like Mrs dash.

While I think their "crack" seasoning is completely over rated. Fresh Fish is one of the absolute best take out places in Lansing. The fish is all fantastic, most unfrozen and legitimately fresh, and is priced several dollars cheaper (per pound) than over the counter at Meijer or Kroger and with better selection. For example; Kroger sells "yellow" lake perch for 7.99 a pound. Fresh Fish sells it for 5.99 per pound. That said it would be a fantastic fish market even if they didn't fry the fish for you to carry out. The fact that they do, for free, fry your fish for you to take home is absolutely brilliant. If I buy 2lbs of cod and Kroger, it's to take home and immediately bread and fry. How great is it that for less they'll do it for me. Obviously, having them fry your fish isn't always going to be best, I'd rather pan cook my own catfish, walleye, and bass; or grill my salmon. And the fry batter is quite heavy which is great for cod and smelt but totally over powers fish like bluegill and perch. I usually use pan-fish like those in my fish tacos and I'll probably keep frying them my self at home but having the option to let them cook my dinner for me is a pretty sweet bonus. To summarize; Fresh Fish deserves 5 stars both as a takeout and then again as a fish market.

Very impressed with this place. Great selection! We got some cat fish filets and some walleye. I had never had walleye before and I loved it!! The only down side was that we got the walleye uncooked with the skin still on it and it was so hard to get the skin off to cook it.Other than that it was so good and we will be back!

A hole in the wall with fish everywhere. It is rumored to have some of the best Southern fried "crack chicken" in Lansing. Well seasoned fries and chicken, I can see why people love it but honestly I have tasted better chicken elsewhere. Make sure you call ahead or else you will have to wait about 20 mins. Was I impressed? I believe it's hyped up more then it tastes.

I have to say there is something about this "crack" chicken. Let me begin with the value. For $11.99 you get 20 wings as others have stated, but the clarify they are 20 full wings drum and flat. In Ohio if you order 20 wings you get 10 flats and 10 drums disconnected these are 20 whole wings. They then are covered in this mysterious white powder which is as everyone said strangely delicious. It is salty sweet and spicy all at once but an be a little over powering. As I ordered 20 I was unable to finish them all and snacked on them cold later...they were still delicious. Some people on here noted they were not greasy but I have to disagree. They did leave my fingers in need of a napkin. The staff was friendly, I called ahead and the order was ready when I got there.

Told my daughter to bring back as much of the crack wings as she can on her carry-on her flight back to San Diego. She said she would but she's afraid none would make it off the plane. BEST WINGS EVER.

The catfish nuggets are excellent proof we are under the care of a supreme divine being. A ton of chicken, catfish nuggets, cole slaw, and amazing hush puppies for around $20. Where else can you get all of that for that price? And have it ALL taste great? It's a good thing I didn't go to MSU for undergrad - I would have died from heart disease from living at this place.

The other day, I ordered a cod dinner and a half-pound of fried jumbo shrimp. The cod dinner was not cod, I was given whitefish. However, since I got it "take-out" and didn't know until I was at home, I considered it a non-issue and ate it anyway. It was very good. The shrimp is large and very tasty.

Don't let the fact this place has the appearance of car shop and not a food joint fool you. If these guys could feed wings to all people of earth, we would achieve world peace! Try them and you will 5* them.

I stopped in here yesterday after hearing from several downtown friends about the crack chicken. I had tried the chicken at Eastside Fish Fry last time I stopped in town (pretty good!) but decided to head down MLK this time. I called ahead and got 20 crack wings and a catfish nugget sandwich. (the total came out to 16.88) I arrived about twenty minues later and my order was ready. It didn't smell strange, as many fish markets will, and it consists of a fish counter and a cash register, along with a couple fridges. I was driving, so i plopped down the aluminum pan in my passenger seat next to my nuggets (it wasn't a sandwich, just nuggets with two slices of bread next to it). I rigged up a spot to keep my hot sauce that comes with the meal and kept napkins at the ready. I ended up demolishing a bunch of super crispy wings and covering myself in crumbs. They really are tasty, and they weren't greasy at all. I didn't think they were too salty, like others have mentioned, but they were borderline. The catfish batter was similar in flavor but with a little more lemon. Catfish was cooked perfectly, and it the batter was crunchy. These are all great things. If there was a place to sit and eat (peacefully), this would get a better review. Since it's takeout only and no frills, they keep customer costs down. That's something I can get behind. For a U Buy We Fry place, this is among the better ones.

Wings are not overly breaded. Fall off the Bone goodness. Fries could have been a little warmer but in their defense we drove back to Grand Ledge and their 'Crack' seasoning is no Joke. Not too greasy. For any "Foodies" you should definitely give "Fresh Fish" a closer look. Called 15 minutes in advance and waited less than 5 minutes when I arrived on a Saturday evening. Nice Staff.

Meh, I really wanted to like this place especially with all of the great reviews. My mother's family is from the south so I am spoiled when it comes to fried chicken and wings. She makes the best, last meal worthy. I tried the crack wings and they were extremely salty, meatless, and dry. You could also tell that the oil was old... the fries had a weird aftertaste. Maybe I just went on a off day/week. The owner/workers are extremely friendly and that was a huge plus and the reason I'll give them another chance. Maybe next time I'll try the fish or shrimp.

"The Aftermath!" Fresh Fish has done it again! The "crack" chicken has made its mark! I live in Detroit but when I am at home in the Lansing there is no question where I must stop. The owners know me by name and make me feel like they missed me! They have consistently kept prices low and it is appreciated!!! Fresh Fish rules.

The best chicken ever, very unique kind of sweet salty spice mix. The best shrimp and oysters I ever had. Can't be beat

Great food. Horrible customer service and clientele. You feel out of place NOT using a bridge card. They seem to pull some VERY fishy stuff with the customers using the magic orange cards. I stop in every couple months. Get in and out as quick as possible.

You would never think this place as a fried chicken place, but my god is the fried chicken amazing. Like, no joke, ridiculously crunchy, impossibly not greasy, and very flavorful with their spices. Plus, they give you ALOT for the price. For less than $20, I have about 4-5 meals worth of chicken. I also tried the hush puppies and cat fish. It's the amazing batter made with fresh fish they have for sale. Need I say more. I heard of the "crack" seasonings. Let's just say, I now know what they mean.

Run, do not walk to this place, but call ahead because they make the chicken from scratch after you order it and it takes about 20 minutes. I am from a long line of southerners and I know fried chicken and hushpuppies. BEST I have ever had. I don't know how they do it. The fried mushrooms are awesome too. Super friendly staff. It just does not get any better. Just don't tell my mamma I said that.

The Gold Standard in Fried Chicken. It's called "Crack" Chicken for a reason. Once you eat it, you're addicted. The texture is absolutely crisp and perfect. Surprisingly, it's not very oily. However, the star of the chicken is the well-seasoned spices they put into it. I order it lightly seasoned for just enough saltiness, but with the distinct "crack" factor no other fried chicken joint has. It's hard to describe exactly what that flavor is, but once you've had it, there is nothing like it. I've had fried chicken from various soul food establishments such as Atlanta's Mary Mac's to Phoenix's Lo-Lo's, but while all are great, they still lack the "umph" or "crack factor" that You Buy We Fry has. Worthy of 5 stars because I would go to Michigan simply for this Fried Chicken ... And I'm from California.

Amazing food, despite the wait! I was taken by their chicken wings. It's true what the other reviewers say about their wings. Wife and children loved their fish sandwich. Will definitely go back.

AKA: You Buy We Fry This is a great place for fried chicken wings! They're not traditional fried chicken wings, so don't expect it, but they ARE delicious. The seasoning is unique and really very good. I've never tried anything else because every time I go I find myself getting chicken. The prices are unbeatable, though the atmosphere leaves something to be desired. I wouldn't ever actually sit in there and eat. I always take my food to go. HIGHLY recommended.

  • Ian L.

I tried their chicken, catfish nuggets and hush puppies. They were all really good. I wish the chicken were a little moister, but the flavor was good, and none of the food was greasy, which is saying a lot since it was all fried. This would definitely be a great place to pick up some good for a party or gathering since the food is fresh, tasty, not greasy and pretty cheap. We got 16 pieces of chicken, large order of hush puppies and 1lb of cat fish nuggets for $20. I would however call ahead and place your order since it does take a little while for them to make it since everything is cooked fresh.
