Me and my girl noticed Niskers while getting froyo and decided to give it a shot. She got the grilled chicken and was impressed by the size and said it was, "amazing". I got the salmon fillet and the quality of the fish was noticeable! The fish was extremely tender and the seasoning was great! I added their home-made chipotle aioli sauce (which was good and had a spicy kick) The owner was very friendly and brought our food right to our seat. The restaurant is small but in good shape and a cozy atmosphere. The buns are also homemade and were VERY good! We will definitely return soon! :)

At Niskers Char-Grill, it's all about the options. Of course, it all begins with the burger: you can choose from the quarter-pound "Lou's Original" to the half-pound "Big Hoss". All of the burgers are fresh, never frozen, certified Angus beef. But in addition to the traditional burgers, you can also choose from chicken, turkey, Ope's veggie or black bean patties, fish, beef-a-lo and sirloin steak. The choices aren't limited to the proteins. There are lots of options for bread, some of which are baked in-house: white, whole wheat, flat bread, wraps and gluten-free. They also have special breads from month to month. Once you've chosen your bread and protein, it's on to a mind-boggling choice of toppings and sauces. Of course, they've got your standard ketchup & mustard, lettuce & tomatoes, but beyond that, options like house-made Jamaican jerk sauce and sweet Lou's BBQ sauce, Thai peanut sauce, banana peppers, green olives, house-made salsa, just to name a few. For those who find the options overwhelming, you can choose from one of Lou's Burger Favorites: set combinations created by Lou Nisker such as the Hawaiian (with grilled pineapple & sweet teriyaki sauce), the Pizzano (a burger that thinks it's a pizza) and my favorite, the Sunny Sider (with bacon, cheese & a fried egg). But again, it's all about options: you can add, subtract or substitute any ingredient on the burger. Create a combo meal and you can add a side to that Char-Grill: fresh-cut curly fries, sweet potato fries, onion rings or the incredible battered-seasoned fries. Or for an additional charge: gravy fries, gravy cheese fries, cheese chili fries, etc. And then, even beyond that, they've got hot dogs, beer brats, riblets, salads and for dessert: brownies, Plainwell ice creams, shakes and malts. Like I said, this place is all about options. But enough about that. All the options in the world don't matter if the burger ain't good. And this is where Niskers scores. The food is awesome. I've had the Sunny Sider made from the premium steak char-grill and it was amazing. Flavorful, tender steak cooked-to-order (medium) topped with bacon, pepperjack cheese (sub for cheddar) & a fried egg with additional toppings. The egg was cooked well-done so if you prefer it any other way, be sure to tell them when they take your order. Another great char-grill was the "Big Hoss" Hawaiian-Style. I'm not sure I could go back to a regular sized-burger after getting the "Big Hoss". It was so thick and juicy. And the pineapple and teriyaki sauce gave this burger a delicious sweet & savory mix. The turkey burger is a great option for those wanting a leaner cut of protein. I had it on a gluten-free bun. The turkey was moist and flavorful. The bun was interesting: it was missing that doughy texture, of course, but I'm glad they have the option for those who are gluten intolerant. If you get the combo, be sure to try the battered, seasoned fries. Although there must be some law against battering a carb with more carbs, but man, is it ever delicious. The fresh-cut curly fries are also excellent, with a nice, crispy exterior. One of the things I appreciate about their fries is that they are not heavily salted and you can salt to taste. Which leads me to the other thing about Niskers and its options: you can tell they love a good burger and they excel at that. But they also cater to those who want to be or need to be more health conscious. From keeping their salt-use down to offering gluten-free buns, to their veggie and lean options, I think anyone can find something to like here. In addition to the delicious food, what I love about this place is the community feel. I've been here several times and have seen Lou himself talking with the customers, not just to find out how the meal was (although obviously that's important), but it was engagement on a more personal level. Many times, when patrons would leave, they would say good-bye, but it was always with the notion that, spoken or not, they would be back. Lou Nisker played for the K-Wings back in the day, and although he's been off the ice for a while, with Niskers Char-Grill and its delicious meats, great breads and awesome toppings, he's still scoring hat tricks. A great burger place for Kalamazoo.

My wife and I both LOVED their burgers, fries & onion rings! Everything was made fresh (even the buns). Best burger I think I've ever had...same goes for the onion rings. The bathrooms were spotless and so was the restaurant. Everyone was very friendly & I will definitely be going back when I'm in Kalamazoo again.

You have plenty of choices around this stretch of W. Main St. Do your taste buds a favor and drop in here instead of the chain place. Great service, ability to top your burger the way you want it with plenty of extras. Lou burger made my way with the toppings I like. Love it, Chilpote Aioli sauce was super spicy and the fries were so curly and delicious. Glad I found a good local spot in the midst. I'll be back.

Amazing hamburgers. I had a BIg Popper (buffalo sauce and blue cheese crumbles), and it was great! Ordered to medium, the burger was cooked properly and had a very nice char on the outside. One of the best cooked hamburgers I've had in a long time. The buns are toasted and you can choose from a variety of fresh toppings. The french fries are battered and while they must be very unhealthy, are tasty as well.

I love cheeseburgers and Lou Nisker's Char-grill probably serves the best burger in Kalamazoo. The restaurant has a great local character. There's a good chance that you'll come in to find Lou Nisker himself on duty. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating in the spirit of an independent business. They're always willing to deal with the unique requests of customers and quirks of how they like their food. As for the food itself, I confess that I only eat the burgers and fries. Lou's marinade of his patty makes for some of the most juicy, flavorful burgers I've ever had. They offer numerous fresh toppings and you can pick and choose as much as you want out of traditional burger toppers. I always ask for a side of the homemade aioli sauce to dip my fries and it's great. Everything is fresh and your food only hits the grill after you order it. Despite that, they do a great balance making fresh, made-to-order food and getting it out quickly. As for other menu items, my wife enjoys their veggie burgers a great deal and they have options for trout, chicken, beef-a-lo, and numerous sides and soups. As a final bonus, they stock Plainwell ice cream and that's always a treat for my son. You can tell this is one of my favorite local restaurants. To show I'm not a total slappy, I'll offer three caveats. One, this is delicious, fresh food and it's not bargain basement cheap. A premium entrée, side, and drink will cost right around $10. Second, as a local small business, they do their best to staff appropriately but if you catch them in an unexpected rush, you might have to wait a couple minutes to order. Last, the menu is extensive and a bit complicated. If you're not a regular, it might take a minute to sort out. Overall, I love this place and hope it remains a Kalamazoo institution for a long time.

If you're a fan of Five Guys you'll love Niskers. Of all their ingredients are fresh including the buns that are made on site, the burgers themselves have a nice char taste. I've always been a fan of Five Guys burgers growing up but Niskers has them beat hands down.

Ignore the other review. This place is wonderful -- the best local burger in the area, BY FAR. I go here when I am craving a tasty, filling, not-chemical-filled burger. I am so happy to see that they opened this location. Be sure to check it out!

What a great burger stop, everything and anything you would need to satisfy a burger craving! The only thing that would make this a 5 star stop is a nice cold brew! Will definitely be back.

I highly recommend the Sweet Lou's barbecue sauce, it's delicious! Service is friendly, but a little slow at times (but that's because they give each burger a great amount of attention). They have two tables outside to sit at or plenty of indoor seating too. Prices are a little expensive, but worth it. I recommend the home cut curly fries rather than the battered fries (they were a little greasy). Overall, a treasure. :)

My wife and i were excited when we chanced upon this place. To start off, we were confused by the menu. It wasn't clear to us that this was a burger place as their menu describes everything as a "char-grill". I even asked what "char-grill" meant and never really got a answer that made any sense. We ordered a NY Strip which i later learned was a sandwich, imagine the look on my face when an employee pointed to a sandwich bar and asked what i wanted on my steak? We also ordered some chicken fingers, cheese gravy fries, some rib tips that came with an extremely small side cup of baked beans and something really nasty they called cole slaw. After a few awkward moments of us trying to figure out what to make of this place we started to receive our food. First, came the chicken fingers with some very tasty honey mustard and bbq sauce. Then came the steak sandwich and pork tips with sides. I enthusiastically bit into my steak sandwich only to discover i had bit into a mouthful of Grissel, Yuck! that was it , I pulled the steak off the bread and started to search for better parts of the steak. Wasted effort as there was none. This was the same kind of steak you get when you go to a buffet. . My wife was making similar (yuck) faces while trying to eat her rib tips. The cheese gravy fries were a joke. We didn't bother asking where the cheese was. After discovering that our entire meal wasn't edible i made a bigger mistake and ordered a burger thinking that i shouldn't judge a burger joint until i at least try a burger. Gross! My burger tasted like horse with too much garlic powder and salt added. I wouldn't pay $.0.10 for that burger. At this point it was hard not to be pissed. I spent over $30 in that place and spent most of the next morning on the toilet. I will never go back there again.

Good burgers and fries. A little pricy though and the service is simply, order from the counter. Has a nice vibe in the place and the staff are genuinely friendly. We were looking for a great veggie burger for one half and a big juicy cheeseburger for the other half. The veggie burger was just okay and the cheeseburger was slightly above average.

Delicious food - really - but a bit on the pricey side. Two burgers, sweet potato fries, and a drink was $17.66. Four stars for the food and very nice service; not that it was exorbitant, but the cost caught me a little by surprise.

Team VP craves a locally sourced, organic, and preservative free diet. Most eateries, however do not cater to us. We were surprised when we read that Nisker's did. Our electricity was out because of a storm, so instead of playing another round of Euchre we went for burgers. I had the vegan black bean burger. It was excellent. It's locally made in Kalamazoo. It's all organic and gluten free! I also splurged on regular fries, which were just okay - a little dry and way under seasoned. Mr. MVP had an organic beef burger. He said it was very good. The vegetables were fresh and very nice. He went with sweet potato fries which were excellent. As gluten sensitive eaters it's always nice to have the option and Nisker's even had us covered for buns. The whole meal was just 22$, which is incredibly reasonable for a locally sourced, organic dinner. We will be back!

This place always brings back great memories from my college years. It is good to see it back and good as ever. The food is affordable, quick and quite tasty. There is a good amount of seating available inside, and it is quite clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. I ordered a Hot Pepper Lou. It is a 1/4 lb. burger topped with blue cheese and spicy buffalo sauce. I chose to add jalapeños and onions. It was great. The burger was tasty by itself and the toppings made it even better. I also ordered a side of gravy and cheese fries. They use curly fries. The fries are good on their own, but the gravy and cheese made it that much better. They are not good for you, but they sure did taste good going down.

Every Friday I go here for lunch - and they never disappoint. I always get the salmon burger with a chocolate shake, those shakes are hand dipped! Delicious. Okay, there was one disappointment. Once, I ordered a side salad instead of my shake (you know, health and all) and it was the most puny thing I've ever seen. Burger joints in general aren't known for salad, so I'll be sticking to what they know best.

I'm not a big fan of Kalamazoo restaurants as I've worked and managed many over the last 50 years throughout the country and found the town to be generally lacking. They suck and I'm not afraid to say that. Niskers is a huge exception. Friendly and efficient service, decent prices, and above all-a great charbroiled non-chain burger, cooked to order. If you order a medium-rare, that's what you get. There are a couple of bars that serve a decent pub burger, but if you want a great one to take home, this is the spot. Period.

Saturday night we decided to stop in. We were terribly disappointed with our order. My husband's 2 hotdogs at close to five dollars a piece were cold. My burger dripped so bad the bun was drenched and yucky. Two others with us were not impressed either. Employees seemed very unconcerned when my husband took his food back to them. They literally heated up the dogs then put them back on same bun. Waste of money and time. Also when ordering , customers were complaining about their cold food.

I'm a huge fan of Nisker's Char-Grill! The burgers are just fantastic. They're fresh and the buns are home-made in the restaurant. The fries are fresh too and they are wicked good. Last visit I had a 1/4 lb burger with the Hot Popper topping which includes blue cheese crumbles. I could eat this every day. Skip the chain stores, eat local!
