I grew up eating here, and can honestly say that 20 years ago, it used to be THE PLACE to go. However, not a thing has changed over those 20 years. They have very good breadsticks and very good greek salad. Everything else is mediocre, and not worth the price for the outdated decorations and food found other places done better for less. A side note about the breadsticks, their express location down the road cooks them better.

Every time I go here it's the same, great breadsticks, cool dessert place across the street in the summer. Love the inside, great price, super retro casual Italian American like cuisine.

I came here to have a little birthday dinner with a friend before heading to the bar and I was taken back when I walked in. I have heard really good things about this place and I have no idea why. This place is a Coney Island that serves alcohol. Although, I ordered the Mac N' Cheese and it was pretty good, I enjoyed it. The decor is extremely outdated, it is really dark and dingy (I don't think there are any windows), and not very clean. The service was slow and the bathrooms were disgusting.

3.5 stars - First off, it's very brown in here. Our 3rd visit in about 5 years to this location tonight. Walked in at 9:40pm on a Monday night. No dirty looks from the staff entering so close to closing time. There were still a couple of bar flies there and another small party remaining at a table near the bar. We were there an hour and the bar flies remained. Service was good and still welcoming. Food was decent (steak came rare as ordered for the BF, my chicken fettucine was a little better than gut-filling). Side Caeser salads that came with our meals were sizeable and particularly tasty. Even that late in the evening the breadsticks were hot and fresh. My iced tea was also started up fresh again, which was cool. I was not told, "We're out, sorry about your luck, sister." I appreciated that greatly because I am 5 months pregnant right now and reaaaaaallly wanted some iced tea (polished off 2.5 glasses worth). Prices are average to steep depending on what you order and for the type of aged / dated venue it is (a bit of a detractor for me personally).

This place has really good breadsticks and ok pizza but they are pretty overpriced and the rest of the food is just ok. They probably should update their decor and menu. But their waitstaff is always really nice.

Food is average Fish always seems to be a little mushy Service is average Drinks are always weak. Order an extra shot!

Very disappointed in the carry out. They didn't have our order and said we called and cancelled it. SMH

Greek salad is famous. Meh. Not at all interesting. Breadsticks fresh and warm out of the oven slathered liberally with butter. Maybe just make a meal of these. Baked mostaccioli - stomach spackling. Seemed to continue to get bigger and bigger on the plate the more that I ate. Noted a reviewer who says the place hasn't changed in 20 years. Easy to believe.

The breadsticks here ROCK!! One of the many reasons my fiancée and I love going here! Their food is great, for good prices. All of their soup is awesome. We have always had friendly waiters and waitresses with each visit and it's a nice warm cozy restaurant for relaxing. Definitely recommend.

The pizza, breadsticks, mostaccioli and nearly every other item on this menu are superb. I've been going here 20 years+ and will continue another 20 years!

Great food every time! Absolutely delicious entrees, but I am partial to their Greek salad and breadsticks the most! I'm constantly craving those hot buttery delicious Breadsticks!! Yum!

Been enjoying the Highland House for over 30 years. Excellent Greek salads and bread sticks and good pastas, pizza, and fish and chips. Still only have well water and the service can be spotty. Management often seems more concerned with gossiping with hostesses than running the restaurant. Still dine here several times a year with usually good results.

The worst customer service and treatment of patrons I ever witnessed in a restaurant and my family and I dine in new restaurants frequently. Witnessed owner mistreat customers in front of busy restaurant and resulted in customers walking out. My friends/family and I decided to not eat at highland house after seeing how owner poorly treated customers while we waited for our table and also saw him belittle his staff in front of other customers. This restaurant should not be operating in the service industry at all and this is why people order take out instead of wanting to dine in at a restaurant. I do not want to spend money in a very poor quality restaurant and will never return again. This was the first time I attempted eating at this place. We decided to go to another restaurant in Milford that had better and friendlier service.

A local establishment catering to the local crowd. The menu is varied serving everything from ribs and chicken to seafood and pizza. My wife had the chicken spanakopiti and i had the lasagna. Portions are huge! We were both satisfied with our meals but i felt the lasagna was a bit bland and needed more seasoning. As others have stated, the bread sticks were very good. I would visit again but it's not a place I would go out of my way for.

Poor service. Rude hostess and staff. WILL NEVER EAT HERE AGAIN. Have no idea why people like it.

A sad excuse for a purported good restaurant. Went with high hope and was quickly disappointed. The host asked us to follow and just took off leaving us wondering which direction to go. The server kept referring to us as "you guys" - why people think this is acceptable I'll never know. I ordered the "Famous" BBQ Ribs with fries and cole slaw. The slaw was pathetic. A huge plate of shredded cabbage and parsley with a breath of mayo. Not slaw dressing - mayo. No salt, no pepper, nada! The ribs were just basic bbq ribs. Nothing special with pedestrian sauce. No extra napkins or wet nap for sticky fingers, etc. The other members of our party we not impressed either. The service was less than attentive. The noise level was eating in a train station ... on the tracks! But if all you interested in is pizza bread slathered in margarine (not butter) then this is your place. Not mine....

Plenty of friendly staff! There were a lot of patrons enjoying their food... And our's ( party of twelve) came quickly and was hot and was really good! So, this is a great indicator that the kitchen is run very well! Wide menu variety. Could stand some updating! Overall though I'd rather have great food here than not so good food in an updated resturant!

Came at opening time and was seated quickly. The waitress took our orders and had the cheese sticks and salad on our table very quickly. The cheese sticks were fresh. The salad could have had more QTY of items other then lettuce. The meal came out soon after The ribs were very good and the Gyro was excellent Service is and was great. Prices are very reasonable to me. We will be back.

I love Highland House. I have never had a bad meal there and have tried several things from the menu as well as the daily specials. Of course, the breadsticks are awesome! Best ever! I love the chicken spanakopita and the harvest salad. Those are my 2 favorites. We come here as a family and really enjoy it. The kids like the pizza. The wait time can be a little long at dinner rush time on weekends but usually not too bad. The service has always been great and I'm sure we will keep coming back for many years!

Great meal until the bill came. Asked the waitess if something was the correct price and she said yes. On the way out, double checked the menu and we were charged the incorrect price. The hostess started to refund our money I told her I wanted to adjust the tip as well. The computer crashed and it took awhile to get it straighten out. The owner steps in and treated me and the hostess very rude. Telling the very nice young lady what she should have done as opposed to doing exactly what I asked her to do. Then had the nerve to tell me our waitress was new and she didn't charge us the wrong price intentionally. I think should have double checked the after we questioned it. He went on to say they have been in business for 30 years. I know if he treated one of my nieces like he treated the front end staff, she would be looking for a new job and he would be nursing a black eye. Never going back. The owner is reason.

Highland House is one of those places where you just know that all of the highfalutin people to know are kicking' it back with the folks that they've known forever. It's a pleasant atmosphere and you feel like you could probably kick off your shoes and hang out all day. The staff is pleasant but not always on top of their game. Consistency is king at Highland House. That in and of itself tends to put it above other places that I have been. The thing is that it's a consistently average experience. I'm fine with that when it comes time to figuring out where to go for dinner at a time where you just don't want to make decisions anymore, because their vast menu will please many and their average flavor profile will offend none. Yes... the breadsticks are good. I don't think that should be the only thing that elevates a business above others. Our go-to items tend to be fish-n-chips, ribs, prime rib, and mostaccioli. As I've said, it's all decent and I like it just fine. That's about as far as I can take it.

Fantastic food and staff! The breadsticks are to die for! Pair that with their garlic cheese dip and you're in heaven! Definition of family owned!

A must stop for dinner!! Salad! Shrimp and scallops with fettuccini! Get the salad with their house dressing. Broasted chicken, too. I come all the way from Chicago for this spot. I heard the ribs are good, get extra sauce for them for dipping!

My family had my grandmother's memorial here. The waitstaff worked hard and did a great job! I just wanted to say thank you.

Nothing special. Ribs were tough, pizza ehh....Breadsticks awesome. Definately a local favorite. However, we are locals and won't return.

Excellent Greek salad and breadsticks. Decent pizza. Some people in my family like the ribs, and the fish and chips are a favorite for others. Their water is well-water, so it doesn't taste very good. Overall it's a good enough restaurant that does a few things quite well and the rest average.

I've always enjoyed Highland House. I've been to it on and off for the past 10+ years as my parents are from the area. When I come home I typically stop by for some dinner or a carry out lunch. The best part of Highland House is the bread sticks by far. These things are delicious! The lasagna is also quite tasty. The rest of the food at Highland House is only ok as many other people have stated. I'd particularly steer clear of the lemon chicken wings, I just wasn't much of a fan of those in particular. However, since I've found something I truly like there, and I only visit it once every 6 months or even once a year, I don't mind no updates to the menu or the rest of the food being mediocre. The pizza is decent, but it's certainly no Chicago Style Deep Dish :). I'm truly a fan.

Best ribs I've ever had. Like ever. I've walked this earth 35 years so that's a big deal.

Best ribs ever. Friendly service great pizza and salad. Breadsticks are addictive so beware carb counters! Great casual place to cater parties.

  • Robb T.

Everything about Highland House is enjoyable, even the dated decor. The service was stellar even though the place was jammed. The bread was absolutely incredible - perhaps the best restaurant bread I have ever had. It came within two minutes of the order, piping hot from the oven. All the other food was very good, too. You could tell that it's a consistent family restaurant with a big, dedicated following. If you are in the area, it is worth a visit.

I remember Highland House was the only place that had power during the huge ice storm of the mid 1980s... They have the same menu now as they did then... good, hearty food with big portions and friendly staff. What keeps me coming back over the last 30 years? Breadsticks. Now you'll say, Michael.. breadsticks, seriously? YES.. They are warm, fresh, buttery goodness with just the right garlic / salt touch.. every time I"m in the area, I have to pick up a bag. The best breadsticks I have ever had. Solid pizza, chicken, & burgers as well.

  • Hymae W.

Highland House is just okay. The breadsticks are all they really have going for them. The food besides that was just okay. I have only been there once and probably won't go again. There was a 30 minute wait when i went and it wasn't worth it. Also: The soda taste hoorible because of the water. I have well water at home and its not half as gross as the water here.

  • HutcH H.

Pizza and breadsticks are GREAT! That's about all I get. Thed could charge 50% more for the pizza and it'd be worth it. My wife has gotten several other meals there and hasn't been disappointed yet. She loves the Greek Salad. The ambience is lacking but that's not why you go here. The staff is friendly and usually an attractive young lady at the front. The water is suspect but as has been noted it's well water. Unfortunately the ice does impacts the drinks somewhat but it's ok. We're heading back tonight.

Great food, decent staff, kind of expensive, BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS! THE WATER AND THE FOUNTAIN POP HERE STINKS LIKE ASS!!!!!!!! AND IT TASTES NASTY DUE TO THE WELL WATER IN THE AREA!!!!!!!!!!! They will NEVER have it fixed!!!!

  • Brian M.

Truly a local favorite by the wait every time I've been here. I have to say I don't know why, except for the fact that it's only one of about four restaurants in the area. The food is really just okay. There is nothing spectacular at all, nothing bad but again just okay. I think family restaurants owe it to the patrons to update the menu once every few years, this menu hasn't changed since it opened years ago. I mean who can't make pasta, breadsticks and pizza . You can't go wrong eating here, I just think it's just so-so, old food and kind of pricey for what you get!

  • Kevin K.

I grew up in Commerce Twp, which is about 10 minutes away, so needless to say, we came here pretty frequently for family functions. The main thing to realize is that you don't need to think very long about what to order. Get the Greek salad, bread sticks, and the pizza. You won't regret it. Just try not to over eat, cause it's easy to do. Makes me wish I still lived in Michigan.

When the owner stops to talk to your five year old, you know service is good. Pretty darn good mac and cheese to boot!

  • Jami T.

This is my parents favorite resturant and they are in their seventies, if that tells you anything about the place. The food is better than average with huge portion sizes and decent prices. As stated in other reviews, the breadsticks are to-die-for - a salty, garlic dream. They supposedly have "Michigan's best greek salad," a statement with which I am not necessarily arguing. I have had decent ribs and a surprisingly tender filet at Highland House. My parents always get the pizza. The wait staff is above average for this type of outdated, dumpy family place. The ambience is quite lacking though. The acoustics are bad. I have never been when Highland House isn't crowded and LOUD. The bathrooms are ehhhhh. Come for the food, not the atmosphere. I have never had an experience with the water. I always get a soda. They also have beer and wine. If you can forgive them for bragging about feeding George W. Bush, then the Highland House will provided a great, casual meal.

A good family restaurant, maybe deserving of four stars, if not for one thing, more on that in a sec. First, its breadsticks really are as good as they say, and the pizza here is quite good too. That's all I've had here, so all I'll comment on. The Greek salads are good, but not overwhemingly so, in my opinion. Solid 4 stars. So why 3? Well, if you've lived in Highland, you know the water sucks big time. Sulfurous and cloudy, and that's what you get here, in either a glass of water or a fountain drink, and it's friggin terrible. Everything smells like rotten eggs. Get some water treatment for chrissakes!

  • Ivan Z.

Terrific food and excellent service. The decor is outdated and the menu never changes, but this is Highland, not Royal Oak's Yuppie Row. I wouldn't want the menu to change - the food is superb. Want something special? Try the specials board, it's right by the door. Decor? I can sit and talk and eat and see my food. And it's good food. I don't care that the walls look like 1986, because my dinner tastes like delicious. Highland House serves up the best Greek salad I've had anywhere ever. Ribs are wonderful, and breadsticks are a buttery-salty-garlicky chunk of carbohydrate heaven. Seafood is hit-or-miss - which is honestly better than one would expect for an exurban Midwest town. I've had a terrific seared tuna steak - and dry, overcooked whitefish. The pizza is very good, if you like Michigan pizza (lots of cheese). Great restaurant for the area and the price.

  • Natalie R.

There is nothing here that isn't good, but only the Greek salad and bread was deemed worthy of making it to our carryout favorite MIchigan restaurant wedding feast buffet. So I recommend you not come here on my wedding day because we are going to have cleaned out the entire salad and bread inventory.

Clean environment, nice staff and great selection of food.

  • Cassandra T.

The bread here really is amazing, as are the salads, ribs, and pasta dishes. The steak however, was bland and tasted "off" somehow. It's usually pretty crowded, and it's very very dark. Sometimes you have a great waiter or waitress, other times you're lucky to flag someone down for a refill. Overall decent, and one of only a few restaurants in the area, but a bit pricey.

    (4)
  • Pam C.

I have been coming to Highland House my entire life as it is my dad's favorite restaurant. I love the breadsticks and the big greek salads. I have tried a few things on the menu that I'm not too crazy about, but you can always count on the salad and bread to be consistent. Their pizzas are ok but I don't really enjoy the pasta dishes I've tried. The restaurant interior is rather dated and drab looking these days and I find it a little bit echoey and noisy. It's a nice place to come for a reasonably good and reasonably priced meal. I have had dreams about the evil breadsticks they serve! So good!

    (4)
  • Eric P.

I don't know what to add that hasn't really been said already, so I'll just sum it up: Food: good to great, particularly ribs & pizza Portions: great Breadsticks: TO DIE FOR Decor: dark, outdated water: ???? - probably well-water, not sure if it's treated. prices: reasonable Regularly accommodates large groups and special occasions. Pretty sure they cater as well. In the 43 years I've lived in this area, I don't think I've ever heard a bad word about The Highland House or its food. This is an area favorite with a very good reputation.

    (4)
  • Heather B.

I think this place is just okay. I love their breadsticks, but I find most of their food to be only so-so. The pizza is dry and has too much cheese and not much flavor. Good for groups and families, though.

    (3)
  • Katie Z.

I love Highland House for their breadsticks alone. As a self-proclaimed carbaholic, their breadsticks are the best I've ever had. I always take my out of town guests here because of their breadsticks and Greek salad, plus anything else on the menu is great too. My favorites are the Baked Mostacoli, Highland House Super Pizza, Ribs, or Prime Rib. The restaurant is pricey, so we go there a few times a year for a treat. But as a local I love going to HighSchool Grad Open Houses because many are catered by Highland House and offer their breadsticks :)

  • Sean O.

My last memories of the Highland House was from about 32 years ago. I used to go there with my Aunt and Uncle, usually once a week. The Greek salad, and bread sticks were the BOMB, as well sa the pizza. I will be back one day!

  • John M.

As most of the others who reviewed HH say in their reviews, I too have been going to HH for years. Their breadsticks are the best, as well as their Greek salads. The pizza is really good and so are the burgers. Really, I have never had anything at HH that I didn't like. As for the water issue, I have never thought that the water was that bad. I don't often order water there, but the soft drinks and ice tea do not have a sulfer smell or bad taste in my opinion. Yes, the decor is outdated, but again, as one of the other reviewers said, it is the same as when they were a kid. That fact makes it comfortable to me. I don't know if I would feel like it was the same old HH if they suddenly remodeled and put in all new decor.

I've been a regular customer for more years than I'd like to admit and have never, ever been disappointed with the food, nor the service. We eat there about once a week, not counting numerous parties that we've had catered. They are the ultimate in consistency. Highly recommend!

    (5)
  • RonAnderson ..

Great comfort food in a family-friendly place - start with the greek salad (huge portions!), then move on to the delicious cheese-filled ravioli, and end with the slab of ribs. You won't be able to move from your seat! The ribs were some of the best I've ever had.

  • K. C.

Grew up in the area and ate at the Highland House on a regular basis. Have lived in out of state 18 years and still have to get back to the Highland House whenever I get home. It's a special request for me that I wouldn't miss. I love Highland House -- I could live off the Greek salad and bread sticks!!!!! We have also had 2 successful parties there in their big rooms.
