HUGE, lumberjack portion breakfast dishes at reasonable prices and fast service. I always sit at the bar and watch the plate orders hit the pick up shelf and ask myself, "who the hell is eating that giant meal, a linebacker?" Theirs always food left on plates when a table leaves cuz it's just too much. This place is usually insanely busy too. Their farmers omelette and biscuits and gravy are awesome with cinnamon toast. Their pancakes are fantastic too. Only one complaint. The gravy on the hot beef sandwich was ungodly salty. I had to scrape it off and just eat the beef, which was almost as salty. They need to monitor that. Additional salt should be added at the table, not in the kitchen.

Kaleva's food and service is hit or miss. I've usually had success with the Farmer's Omelet.

We went on a Sunday in October and it was busy but not super busy. After ordering it took about 45 minutes for our simple breakfast to be served. Booths need to be fixed and it's fairly dirty inside. I like that it's old school but next time will cross the bridge and go to the Suomi Cafe.

Not sure what these people are ordering. Ordered the specialty because it sounded good and it was The panukaka is out of this world custardy baked Finnish pancake with fresh blueberry's. They were out of pastys for my son his pizza was just so so. But do you expect a Finn to make the best Italian? Worth a try

Veggie omelet was great- really stuffed with lots of veggies. Nisu toast was pretty good. Omelets don't come with potatoes. Super busy place on weekend mornings. Not the best ambiance but good service.

I've had better in the area. One visit in particular, the service was beyond awful. No fresh coffee or water the whole time. Waiter was reading the menu to understand our orders. Its been decent too. If your waiter is a middle aged woman, you are probably good, if it is a high school boy, you are probably hosed.

This mom and pop diner screams AMERICANA! From the moment you walk in, take a look at the customers, view the pastry behind the glass counter, look into the simple and clean kitchen, you know this is going to be comfort food. $5 for a large pasty and cole slaw, which was quite good, and $6.95 for the liver, onions and bacon with mashed and gravy with fresh green beans says I like this place. We walked out after two large decent lunches, great friendly service, clean accommodations, and a bag full of kolaches (fruit tarts) date bars and a frozen pasty for $20! Any chain restaurant other than Subway would have cost much more. Yay, Kaleva!

This was my first trip since the "new" owners took over a few years ago. It was a welcome change to not be greeted by the haze of new and old cigarettes. Food was pretty good--go for the Finnish dishes. I tried the pannukakku which is a baked egg custard--wild blueberry sauce, definitely yummy. My dining partner had a pasty which he pronounced "tasty"--I'm not a fan so didn't try one. Service was adequate. The staff seemed to be pretty friendly with the regulars so maybe they needed to get used to us. Worth a try if only to learn how to pronounce "pannukakku"!

Excellent pasties! Atmosphere is your typical small town diner. Server was pretty friendly after she got talking.

Let's see - I ordered hot chocolate, they gave me a pack of Swiss Miss and a cup of hot water. They could've at least stirred it for me. I ordered eggs. They were freezing. I complained. They microwaved them, turned them to rubber, and brought them back out. Never again.

Went in here the first time the morning of Thanksgiving and my breakfast was actually quite tasty. Waitress wasn't the warmest, but she was somewhat cordial. Honestly, I might be a little peeved myself if I worked on Thanksgiving so I let it slide. Went in for the 2nd time yesterday. This waitress needed a lesson in manners. After we ordered, she NEVER checked back on us. I asked the waitress I had on TG Day for a refill finally and she obliged and even spoke to us a bit. My companion asked out original waitress for a refill on her coffee and got a bothered look. Food is quite tasty in my opinion, but service could be a lot better. It's in walking distance from me and the food is good so maybe if I become a regular, I will get better service.

The atmosphere is bland, but the french toast is superb. I can honesty say the french toast I had at the Kaleva Cafe is the best in town, dare I say state. Get the french toast and prepare yourself for a good day. Happy Eating, Megan Lang

From the moment you walk into the Kaleva Cafe, you may get the urge to turn around. Admittedly, the bright lighting and bland decor is not the most inviting. But underneath this seemingly boring surface is one of the very best breakfast destinations in the Houghton/Hancock area. On our first visit, my party decided to all get breakfast and we somewhat shared our dishes with one another, which was a great way to determine how good the food is here. The variety of french toast dishes is surprising, as is the distinctly awesome taste. The apple french toast in particular is just great, great breakfast food. The omelettes are yummy and filling, and the non-stop flow of coffee refills was much appreciated. We were all floored at the incredibly fair prices and great food. There's only street parking but that's usually not a problem in downtown Hancock, and the location is easy to find and close to many other good stores and bars in town. The service wasn't extraordinary but they were very nice, and the booths were obviously filled with content regulars, which is always a good sign. If you're in town and need to go out for breakfast, I can't imagine going anywhere else.

My boyfriend and I went here during our vacation for breakfast and it was a fantastic choice. Not only was the food delicious and inexpensive but even with a dining room full of people we still received great service. Overall, this is a great breakfast place, we ended up stopping in again before our drive home.

I love this place! Good food, healthy portions, nice staff. Try the biscuits and gravy or an omelet. Open face turkey sandwich is made with fresh cooked turkey. Oh, and the pastys are amazing and available daily.

We were in town for Winter Carnival and stopped in The Kaleva Bakery for breakfast. The place was jumping and the service was great. The menu has a big selection and prices reasonable. Always try to get here when in town.

Standard small town diner. The breakfast bowls are pretty tasty but the coffee leaves something to de desired.

2 undercooked blueberry pancakes and a small piece of shoe leather ham. Yuk! My first visit and my last.

This is a typical "Good for Breakfast, Not Anything Else" type restaurant. There is nothing special about the place (the decor is generic, the food doesn't have a signature flavor, etc.), but its cheap and tasty food with bottomless coffee and its conveniently located in downtown Hancock.

I just moved to the Houghton/ Hancock area. I ordered take out from here and the service was good, fast, and pleasant. I ordered a pasty and a grilled chicken wrap. I had never had a pasty before. It was decent comfort food. I have been heavily dieting so something filled with potatoes was not exactly what I was looking for. But again, I was ordering local and the service was good. Overall great staff and friendly impression. The restaurant was clean and locally owned. Apparently, they have awesome breakfast. I guess they're breakfast is higher recommended.

I was so excited to try pasties for the first time, what a let down. It was basically a beef pot pie without a buttery, crispy crust and lacking flavor in the filling. The pastry shell was dry. I had to smother it in gravy to get some flavor. This cafe was fine for a quick lunch, but I have to imagine Houghton/Hancock area has more to offer (especially after some good meals in Marquette nearby). Kaleva Cafe was extremely dated inside, the bathroom was nasty, and they had a number of construction projects ongoing. Service was pretty quick considering there was only one waitress, but she was not friendly at all. I can overlook a lot of "quirks" if the food measures up, but that was not the case here. Keeping on walking!

Being a local, this place has been a staple in the community forever! I typically go here for breakfast and often alternate between the mini breakfast and the broccoli cheese omelette. I've also enjoyed their nisu French toast and pancakes (they are as big as your head)! The place gets crazy, so feel free to grab a table when other patrons leave - they will come around and clean it in just a sec. The girls work hard, but seem shorthanded at times,so patience is needed.
