I'm not quite sure why everyone that has been here NEEDS to find something to complain about. They are not required to serve vegan meals. Why would anyone think that a brewery would serve beer out of anything other than glass? As long as the server keeps your drink full, what more is there to complain about? The food was wonderful, the beer was cold, and if you don't like all the antlers, ask yourself one question. Why did I go to BIG BUCK brewery? What were you expecting to find on the wall? Flowers and lace? Seriously, I would recommend this place to anyone passing through Gaylord. I love Michigan breweries, and this one is no exception. Brew on, Michigan.

What an odd place. Beer is very good but that is it. It claims to be a steakhouse and brewery yet the food menu is beyond odd. This place is huge and they make their own beer and liquor on site which is pretty cool. The place is huge but there is no atmosphere with only one TV being on while we were there and it looked like that TV was going to croak any minute. I've been to a lot of Michigan breweries and this was borderline creepy as there were only a few people there on a Friday night, despite it basically being the only place in this small town. We went to the "store" or room where you could by individual beers and got some beers to take with us and hit the road ASAP. I chuckled when we were checking out and the girl, who looked like she was 16, claimed that she too liked the "Indiana" pale ale, lol. She was nice which was much more than I could say for our bartender earlier. Will not stop again, it was like eating and drinking in a morgue.

Might want to call in Chef Ramsay for an overhaul. I echo several other reviewers comments. Giving this 1 star is being generous. I think standing outside the restaurant and warning guests about to enter that they should go somewhere else is warranted. Wish I would have checked Yelp before we went. A $28 steak was barely a 1/4 inch thick, full of gristle, and no flavor. Adding mushrooms for $3 gets you a grand total of 6 mushrooms. $6 kids burger was over cooked and the bun was stale. $23 steak was edible but flavorless without the Gorgonzola mushroom sauce. $15 salad was edible, but a more appropriate price would have been $7. The guests I dined with were shocked. They had been here 10 years ago and kept raving how good it used to be. The manager (in charge of the alcohol and brewery) was very apologetic and adjusted the bill accordingly. The other manager, a woman, who I believe was the food/restaurant manager walked around the restaurant and looked like she was in a daze and completely disengaged. She did not check in with us on quality of food and appeared much more interested in leaving for the night. My hope and wish for this restaurant....a vibrant engaged management staff that values the excellent service provided by the wait staff and the amazing food that the chefs are able to create. I would encourage them to engage outside help to turn this place around. We definitely will not be stopping again until we see some awesome reviews out here about the turnaround.

Just had dinner and ordered the rib eye steak . Asked for it to be cooked medium rare. Waitress brought steak and it was cooked medium. So I sent it back received a different cut but same kind and was raw and center uncooked and cold. Asked for manager who replied that they felt the first one was cooked medium. Thought waitress was good but manager snotty.

I'm back traveling again for work and my hotel is right next to Big Buck Brewery. I've been here once before and the IPA is pretty good. The food is delicious, perhaps a little overpriced ($15 for jalapeño bacon mac & cheese, I feel like I could have gotten at least a spoonful more) but the flavor is good and there are some unique options on the menu. The thing that I hate about this place is that they seem to be continually understaffed. I sit at the bar, order a beer and order to-go food because that's my thing. I've been here twice and both times I've waited at least 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge me and take my drink order. Once they notice you though, it's all good. The hostess was incredibly nice and personable, she may have been the highlight of the visit. I'll be back. I always come back.

I think many people who visit Big Buck will be tempted to write it off as a craft brewery channeling its inner deer hunter. That is true, but they go beyond the antler excess. Their beer, and food, are actually above average. Wings are one of those brewpub staples I make a point to try. Theirs were delicious. The beers didn't chart new territory. Everything you would expect from a craft brewery was here, and with seasonals to boot. My only disappointment was that you couldn't order beers out of hollowed out antlers and horns, like in Vikings. I mean, if you are gonna have that many antlers on display why not just go the distance? You could order game meat so what gives?

Eek. We stop in Gaylord on our way through MI on our way to Canada once per year. Big Buck is right next door to the hotel where we've stayed the past 2 years. It's a HUGE restaurant with a large menu. Each year we've come on a Friday night and it's crickets in the parking lot. Barely any cars or any people. Kind of creepy for such a large place. The first time we stopped in I wasn't impressed, but it was decent enough for a second visit. This past time I really wasn't impressed. Aside from the cheesy decor and the pool table and back patio that were totally empty and appeared not even open for use, the server looked like she could fall asleep at any second. My husband ordered a blue cheese burger that came with no blue cheese and instead a heap of coleslaw on top of a burger. We ordered rye Manhattans and what came out to us were two glasses of straight whiskey with a cherry garnish in each. So gross when you're not expecting that. They should have taken two seconds to look up a recipe if they didn't know how to make a Manhattan or just say they don't offer that. Wine is overpriced and not that great. Too bad. I can see the potential here for this place. Maybe I've come randomly on two off Friday nights...

If no stars were an option. I'm highly disappointed with Big Buck Brewery. One never take crab cakes off your menu when it was the only thing that mattered. Tonight was a massacre. Shrimp Alfredo is a new item on the menu but it's not the one you want to choose. The Shrimp was the only flavor or should I say positive part about this whole entree. This so called Alfredo sauce had no flavor very bland! I NEVER USE SALT! Tonight I did. That's not the worst part it was like eating water noodles. Literally the pasta was swimming and not in the ocean because that would be salty. I normally don't yelp but tonight I couldn't help.

Great beer, poor menu. Being married to a vegan means we will never eat here due to the carnivorous chef. Come on, Big Buck! Trying to have an upscale restaurant menu means having food options for a variety of diets.

I hadn't been to this place in about 15 years. I remembered it being good. My party showed up at 8:40 and we were informed that the kitchen closed at 9. We asked if they were still serving food and the server guaranteed us that they were happy to cook for us (multiple times). I received the shittiest cut of rare ribeye (I wish I had taken a photo). It was raw in some places and well done in others. Sides were obviously microwaved (mashed potatoes cold in the middle, the steak's inconsistent temperature). My party had similar results with their meal. If you want overpriced, poorly cooked, shitty cuts of steak this place is for you. I will never go back. I will say the beer was good, sadly, it was not good enough.

As another yelper mentioned, the giant beer bottle and deer head put Big Buck Brewery on our radar. My family loves a good microbrewery so we thought we'd give it a try! The positives: great drinks. We tried the raspberry wheat beer and orange vodka mixed with grapefruit juice. Not too shabby! The tourist gag gifts also added an element if fun. The calamari appetizer was really fresh and would have been awesome if it'd come out before our food arrived. The chocolate cherry cheesecake was also yummy and ended the meal on a good note. The not-so-positives: the food! The prime rib and cheese grits came out cold. How disappointing! I told our waiter (who was probably 14) and he said they'd have to put it in the microwave. The grits still came back cold but at least the steak tasted good. The service wasn't great either, but the boy was so nice and tried. Pretty disappointing for a $25+ entree. Would maybe go back for drinks but I'll definitely stay clear of the menu and try a few different places first!

Recently visited for the first time. Met up with friends for some catching up over dinner and drinks. Chicken with bacon over some mashed potatoes hit the spot for me. Had a great experience, will visit again next time I'm passing thru. Great job, Big buck team!!

Only gets 1 star for the homemade soda. Food was bad which in turn makes it over priced. A friend wanted the ribs, but the menu said the ribs came with their house "sauces," but no actual bbq sauce. The waitress said the closest they had to bbq sauce was the cherry house sauce. When the ribs came to the table, the ribs were covered in what looks like marina sauce. It was terrible on the ribs. Also ordered fish and chips. Fish batter had no taste to it and the chips were just regular french fries. Will not eat there again or recommend it.

We've been to this brewery/restaurant several times on our way up north from South East Michigan. The food is over-priced and not very good, but, hey, its right off 1-75 and convenient if you're leaving after work. This Friday, June 27, 2014, we stopped as usual. I ordered a salad. Once I set fork to veg I notice right away that there was brown and decaying iceberg lettuce, cleverly concealed under a few fresher leaves. We called the waitress who was very courteous and concerned. She summoned Debbie, a manager. Debbie came hugging a round tray to her chest like a bullet-proof vest. "Are you the one?" were the first words out of her mouth. Nice intro. I told her that in no way was brown lettuce acceptable in a restaurant, or at any table, period. She tried to tell me that the lettuce was fresh that day. Well maybe it came into the restaurant that day, but the lettuce itself was 2-3 months old, I would say. Iceberg lettuce has a very long refrigerated life. Her manner and demeanor were not what you'd expect in a manager. Debbie may have apologized (minimally), and took the decayed vegetable matter off the bill, but I was not happy that the meal for the two of us was not compensated, especially considering I ordered no replacement food at all. Avoid this place. There is no quality control.

So sad I could cry. Big Buck used to be a family favorite and tradition that we planned our travel around to arrive at lunch or dinner time. The wild game, fish and Michigan local dishes were the draw. We loved the decor which has now been made a mockery. Service is sub-par. Afraid this is our last try, unless we a huge management change occurs.

Some of the worst food and drinks I've ever had in northern Michigan. While it's a tourist trap and I'm sure that brings in most of the money, I really don't know how they stay in business. Go elsewhere...Gaylord has tons of much better options, like McDonald's or a gas station.

I was out snowmobiling with friends in the great white north last week and we picked this spot as a stop on our journeys, for lunch and eats. The building is attractive on the outside. There's a large inflatable beer bottle in the parking lot and, according to my friend Annie, this spot tries to make all of their own liquors - including hard liquor. I enjoyed the ambiance as well. There's a nice lodge feeling to it, with exposed wood logs. Most of the look is good, except for a large, strange looking nest full of wooden eagles in the middle of the building that they could definitely stand to lose. There are also a number of random stuffed animals around the location that presumable add to the decor as well. This type of decoration seems common in the area. I tried their basic burger with a 4 oz sample of one of their brews. Verdict was: not bad. Great basic burger. French fries were cooked appropriately, and the brew was good. Would definitely return and would take friends there.

3/14/2014 I hate to tattle-tell but this was bad, really bad for a total of $69.67 worth of room temperature bad tasting food. This drop dead gorgeous, cavernous and empty restaurant had some of the worst food for CEO prices I have ever had the misfortune to experience. We sat at the beautiful but very tall bar hand carved wood bar alone and the bartender, Alissa was nice. Two dinners which included one 1/2 filled glass of wine, one very tall beer and a 15% tip for two was $80. I could not finish my dinner or take the remainder home. I am grateful for Yelp so that I can warn America about this really bad cuisine. I notice no one has positively Yelped this place since May 2013. I can see why. Hopefully the Buck stops here. .

Was a bit disappointed.... Dark and dreary on the inside. Only a few other patrons. Good appetizer was house made pork rinds. Fresh and warm. Meals were a let down. For a steakhouse the cooks don't know how to cook a burger med rare. Our table ordered 4 and only 1 was cooked right. Manager came to the table but hadn't a clue how to handle it. Offered a redo but we declined because food took long to begin with. Will not return.

If there was a "0" star rating, that is what I would have checked. Filthy dirty, pointed out to the waitress our table was sticky and needed to be wiped down... she said "that is the way all the tables are, it is the finish". There were rings on our table from the previous diners beverages that easily came off when I wetted a napkin and tried to clean it myself. All the T.V.'s in the restaurant were turned off on our visit on a Saturday afternoon during college basketball tournaments. When I asked if they would turn them on I was told they were in a dispute with Charter their cable provider over how many cable boxes they need... whatever! Overpriced food. I will never ever go back in that restaurant again. I am surprised they are still in business.

This place used to be a staple of all of our Up North trips camping, biking, Mackinac, etc. It had been at least 3 years from my last visit and wow how the mighty have fallen. There was absolutely no one in the restaurant that used to be wall to wall. The beer list is unimpressive and uninspired. The food was average at best but certainly overpriced. It seems like ownership is content on living on past reputation taking whatever profits come and put no effort into the facilities or growth. I am actually sad

I was a little wary of the place after ready previous reviews for this restaurant, but my family wanted craft brews and pub food at a local establishment, so we prepared for the worst while hoping for the best. We were quite pleasantly surprised. The food was tastey, if a little pricier than I expected. The staff were timely and friendly. While we sat at a table, we had to go up to the bar to check out the beautiful carvings along the entire length of the bar. The "Great Outdoors" decor is certainly fitting for the locale. The beers were palatable, if not memorable, and the house's signature cocktails went down very easily. I will stop here again when passing through Gaylord.

Visited at 11:30 am on a Friday; very few people there but service was still pretty slow. Had burgers, which were good and moderately priced ($10, including fries). Ordered a shot of their bourbon, which was also good but I was surprised to find when the bill came that it was $9! Wish the waitress had mentioned that when it was ordered--I would have told her to forget it! I was planning on buying a bottle of the bourbon, but changed my mind after the $9 shot!

Still not bad. The beers are good and the food is ok, however still not up to the level when it was part of the Big Buck family. 10 years ago this was the best restaurant in Gaylord. Now, not so much. If you want the best, go to Bennethum's Northern Inn on Old 27 across from Otsego Lake.

This place has changed over the years... But it is still great. It is kinda empty this times of the year but they put the game on for us, a nice atmosphere, nice staff, and the staff is attentive. They make all their own liquor and beer and it is great... Not sure about the wine because I haven't tasted but the bourbon and beer is great, The food is always quite good, fresh and hot... Not so healthy but the fried food is fresh and hot. A yummy and reliable place to go eat and drink.

I just drank their so can't comment on their food. I was going to order a sandwich but their flattop was broken so they couldn't make it. Beer was average. They had a lot of selections. I preferred their specialty beer but it was WAY overpriced. $6/12oz for a Black IPA???

Due to my first review being removed. I will repost with one with more stars so you might be able to read this. Extreme disappointment! This review was sent to their corporate email but bounced back. On January, 3, 2014, around 7:15pm, my wife and I stopped into the Gaylord, MI location for a fantastic meal! The server was kind and attentive, however I have never been more disappointed in a restaurant meal. As the host led us to be seated, we requested a warm place to dine, but were seated in the bar area where there was a cool breeze. The table was sticky and salted. A moment after our meals arrived and we were able to take a bite, the manager (we presumed, since she did not identify herself) did inquire on our satisfaction, however, she was a little early since I was yet undecided about the meal. The BBQ Ribs were way overcooked, gummy and flavorless; except for the strong taste of natural gas. (my guess is they were boiled, then thrown over a fresh-lit gas flame before serving). The French Fries were not fresh, the coleslaw was bitter and this meal was served on a chilly plate. After the second bite and pushing my plate aside, the courteous server asked if there was a problem with my meal. She graciously removed the plate and headed to the kitchen. The manager (we presumed) returned to the table and offered me a choice of something else, however, I politely declined due to feeling a bit nauseated. We were pleased that they took the initiative to remove the meal from the bill. We have dined here in the past and have been very happy with the food, service, and comfort. Not sure what has happened, but we were there on a Friday night at the end of the Christmas/New Year Holiday Season and the place had only about 6 tables seated. Sad to see Big Buck failing like this

Me and my family stopped on our way up north for dinner. Terribly expensive for below average food. Waitress was attentive. Don't get the Buffalo mac-n--cheese way too spicy and dry. My wife had the fiesta salad and they up charged $7 to add chicken. The only good meal was my son's kids steak.

Just ate here for the first time and it was neat! We even got to meet the head brewer of who is a gentleman. The location is remarkable as you can't miss it driving by, we had to try it out. Service was good, food was good, atmosphere was awesome. If you are looking for something unique as you drive through Gaylord, this is a must stop!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS fellow snowmobilers. Worst service ever. Not exaggerating. 115 minute wait for food after ordering; order screwed up beyond belief - some cold, some hot, one entree didn't arrive until everyone was done! No drink service unless you walk to the bar. Contacted manager (owner's girlfriend) thinking it was just our server- let's just say she appeared to lack capacity to help (they have lots of mediocre beers and spirits on hand). Feel like an absolute fool for still tipping at this establishment - incompetence at every level. AVOID AT ALL COSTS! (This would be 0 stars except that I cannot remove the one I inadvertently clicked)

If you're like us and immediately drawn off the highway at the sight of a giant buck and an inflatable beer bottle, you can already probably guess what you'll find inside this huge restaurant: taxidermy bears, beavers carved into the bar, and giant chandeliers made of antlers. While I would agree with a previous reviewer's sentiment that this is approaching a parody of what tourists might think of northern Michigan, we were on vacation -- we WANT to do some stupid touristy stuff along the way. While I can't speak for the food, our bar tender, Seddric, guided us through a beer flight and was also most helpful in recommending one of their liquors to try (the bourbon -- so good I took a bottle home as a gift for my boss). The beer is quite good. Mind blowing? No. Not at all. But really damn good. Be sure to try the Raspberry IPA, a beer they actually came up with on accident. It has just a touch of raspberry to the finish. Amazing. Our favorites were the ESB and, most surprisingly, the "light" version of their Antler Ale. I can't believe I just typed that. The clear winner, though, was the pumpkin ale they had on draft. I tend bar at an establishment that focuses on small craft brews and, having tasted maybe a dozen this year alone, I thought Big Buck's was better than any others I have tried. While I can't speak for the food, the beer was good and they know what they're doing. Note that Michigan law forbids them from selling brand name liquors because they distill their own -- so if you like tequila, I have some bad news for you: they don't offer any. The bourbon, again, was awesome. You can also get a mixed 6 pack to-go for around $17.00. A little pricy, but the labels are beautiful and they make a good gift for a beer lover who doesn't have regular access to Big Buck products.

I'm pretty damn sure my waiter is high. Also items ordered from the kids menu have to be cooked medium well; however, same child can order anything off of the adult menu cooked any way they want.

I too would give a zero if this was an option. We stopped because the name and appearance of the building drew us in. The greeter was fantastic and friendly with her greeting at the door. The waiter was.friendly. beer samples cost between 1.50 -2.00 each FOR a 4oz sample and not one Of them was good. Burger was okay. Fries were good. Wish we had helped this first. The best part of the meal was the 49 ice cream cone at McDonald's a few blocks away. Very disappointed.

As an out-of-towner visiting, I was quite impressed with the 'cabin/lodge' vibe this resturaunt has. I did end up sampling some of their fine brews - that were quite amazing as well as dined in. The steak is to die for and you will love the Beer Cheese soup. A bit on the pricey side, the meals were quite wonderful and I would stop im again. You can take a tour of the brewery as well - though we did not have time to do so.

Pretty much only tourists go here, it's decor even caters to what a lot of tourists think a northern Michigan place should look like.Taxidermied animals, light wood cabin-y surroundings, kinda hokey in other words. The food can be good, but just as often it's not good enough to justify the price. The beers are ok, but don't knock my socks off. Definitely not comparative to Short's in that regard. The service can also be fine, but sometimes it's not. Once I saw a bartender sneeze right on the beer taps. Not my favorite.

Very disappointed. I ordered 12 oz delmonico it was bad. Quarter inch cut and no seasoning. How is 12 oz a quarter inch? I added salt to steak. Better off going to Applebee's and paying 10 vs25.

Spent the night in Gaylord and had dinner with friends. I had the prime rib and my wife had the ribs. Both were outstanding. I had one of the stout beers as well that I really enjoyed. I've been here before and have always enjoyed the meals.

This place has become sad and depressing..the food used to be good and now it just sucks. They are also constantly hiring all new staff. Something is going on at the Big Buck( which is a good name for it being your going to spend big bucks eating there) and it sure isn't good. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone..

Gaylord is dubbed the "Alpine Village" of Michigan, a name which is fitting due to all the Austrian/German/Nordic architecture in the local buildings. So the giant lodge that is the brewpub isn't out of place, though the gigantic bottle of beer sitting out on the highway is sort of out of place. I liked the look of Big Buck the moment I set foot in the place. It feels like a rustic cabin with stuffed animals and big timber decorations throughout. The bar is in the back where you can get a view of the brewing equipment behind vaulted ceilings and glass windows, or one of the several aging but adequate televisions. I liked the location, but it all went downhill from there. The service was terrible. I was sitting at the bar, which is usually a sure-fire way to get quick service. However, there was only one bartender pouring drinks and filling growlers for the entire establishment on a Saturday afternoon on the first weekend of college football season. Not smart. I spent an hour and a half here when I should have been in and out in 30. Luckily, I finally stepped up and started calling out orders instead of waiting for him to ask me for them. There were only three beers on tap, which is lame. Normally they have eight, give or take, from what I gather from their website and the number of taps behind the bar. How they can let themselves run so low, I have no idea. The lager and raspberry wheat were decent. Luckily, the stout was outstanding and well worth the $5.00 for the tall glass. What wasn't worth the money, though, was the $1.50 to $2.00 "tasters" that were no more than 2.5 ounces each. Talk about a rip-off. Finally, the food is overpriced as well. It doesn't help that I ordered a reuben made out of venison, but it still shouldn't cost $14 for a sandwich. It was a good sandwich, but the accompanying chips were bland, even though they're made in-house. Great texture and potato taste, though. Just needs more/different seasoning. All in all, the place isn't bad if you order conservatively and go on a day where they actually have beer and enough people to pour it. But based on my one experience, the marks are low. I could easily see coming back and adding a star or two, though.

When we walked into Big Buck, I turned around to catch my husband's expression. This place is decked out with antlers, branches (chairs), and dead animal heads. Very fitting for this Northern Michigan restaurant. The crowd (which was bustling) was made up of golfers, families, and young couples. We came to sample the beer and we did! For $1 you can get a 5 oz. sample. All the beers we tried were good with my favorites being the Big Buck and Jeffe. Their dark stout even made me think that I should give Guinness another try. I don't know, maybe I was drunk. The Delmonico steak was best thing we tried but the add-ons were not worth it. It was a lame amount of onions and mushrooms, and they were button mushrooms. Our server was friendly and didn't sound bored when she explained the different brews to us. Definitely a good choice is you're in the area.

Really good for this part of the state. Had the ribs with bourbon and garlic mash potatoes. Great home-made rootbeer. The green beans were tasty and fresh cooked. The decor is fun and the little gift shop has some tasty looking artisanal alcohol including one basil infused. Hmmm. Could be tasty.

Stayed next door at the Baymont Inn and walked across the parking lot to a real nice treat. XXX Beer was very good. Prime rib was excellent and the sides (green beans and mashed) were right on the money. I love going into a place and having the food and service exceed your expectations. The antlers and taxidermy decorations are a little over the top for me. The gift shop entrance is weird and it's not really a sports bar; so that mixed atmosphere is the only thing that cost this nice clean new place it's 5th star. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

My first impression was that perhaps this wasn't the place for me as I wasn't carrying a hunting rifle, wearing an orange vest, and didn't have the bullet-riddle carcass of some animal strapped to the roof of my car. The decor was over the top to say the least, with a massive "chandelier" made out of an accumulation of antlers and "trophies" of animals scattered about (how we got the notion that beheading something we killed made for a great trophy is beyond me) the walls. Yet, the beer was really good and the steaks were juicy and flavorful. I'm betting this isn't going to come to my area anytime soon but I have to say I enjoyed it nonetheless, decor aside.
